We prove $L^2$ stability estimates for entropic shocks among weak, possibly \emph{non-entropic}, solutions of scalar conservation laws $\partial_t u+\partial_x f(u)=0$ with strictly convex flux function $f$. This generalizes previous results by Leger and Vasseur, who proved $L^2$ stability among entropy solutions. Our main result, the estimate \begin{align*} \int_{\mathbb R} |u(t,\cdot)-u_0^{shock}(\cdot -x(t))|^2\,dx\leq \int_{\mathbb R}|u_0-u_0^{shock}|^2 +Cμ_+([0,t]\times\R), \end{align*} for some Lipschitz shift $x(t)$, includes an error term accounting for the positive part of the entropy production measure $μ=\partial_t(u^2/2)+\partial_x q(u)$, where $q'(u)=uf'(u)$. Stability estimates in this general non-entropic setting are of interest in connection with large deviation principles for the hydrodynamic limit of asymmetric interacting particle systems.
Our proof adapts the scheme devised by Leger and Vasseur, where one constructs a shift $x(t)$ which allows to bound from above the time-derivative of the left-hand side. The main difference lies in the fact that our solution $u(t,\cdot)$ may present a non-entropic shock at $x=x(t)$ and new bounds are needed in that situation. We also generalize this stability estimate to initial data with bounded variation.
We show the vanishing viscosity limit to entropy shocks for the fractal Burgers equation in one space dimension. More precisely, we quantify the rate of convergence of the inviscid limit in $L^2$ for large initial perturbations around the entropy shock on any bounded time interval. This is the first result on the inviscid limit to entropy shock for the fractal Burgers equation with the quantified convergence, for large initial perturbations.
In this paper, a viscous shock wave under space-periodic perturbation of generalized Korteweg-de Vries-Burgers equation is investigated. It is shown that if the initial periodic perturbation around the viscous shock wave is small, then the solution time asymptotically tends to a viscous shock wave with a shift partially determined by the periodic oscillations. Moreover the exponential time decay rate toward the viscous shock wave is also obtained for some certain perturbations.
This paper proves the existence of unstable shocks of the Burgers-Hilbert equation conjectured in arXiv:2006.05568. More precisely, we construct smooth initial data with finite $H^9$-norm such that the solution in self-similar coordinates is asymptotic to the first unstable solution to the self-similar inviscid Burgers equation. The blowup profile is a cusp with Hölder 1/5 continuity with explicit blowup time and location. Unlike the previously established stable shocks, the initial data cannot be taken in an open set; instead, we control the two unstable directions by Newton's iteration.
We study the vanishing viscosity limit of the one-dimensional Burgers equation near nondegenerate shock formation. We develop a matched asymptotic expansion that describes small-viscosity solutions to arbitrary order up to the moment the first shock forms. The inner part of this expansion has a novel structure based on a fractional spacetime Taylor series for the inviscid solution. We obtain sharp vanishing viscosity rates in a variety of norms, including $L^\infty$. Comparable prior results break down in the vicinity of shock formation. We partially fill this gap.
In this work, we examine the solution properties of the Burgers' equation with stochastic transport. First, we prove results on the formation of shocks in the stochastic equation and then obtain a stochastic Rankine-Hugoniot condition that the shocks satisfy. Next, we establish the local existence and uniqueness of smooth solutions in the inviscid case and construct a blow-up criterion. Finally, in the viscous case, we prove global existence and uniqueness of smooth solutions.
We prove finite time blowup of the Burgers-Hilbert equation. We construct smooth initial data with finite $H^5$-norm such that the $L^\infty$-norm of the spacial derivative of the solution blows up. The blowup is an asymptotic self-similar shock at one single point with an explicitly computable blowup profile. The blowup profile is a cusp with Hölder $1/3$ continuity. The blowup time and location are described in terms of explicit ODEs. Our proof uses a transformation to modulated self-similar variables, the quantitative properties of the stable self-similar solution to the inviscid Burgers eq…

We consider bounded weak solutions to the Burgers equation for which every entropy dissipation is representable by a measure and we prove that all these measures are concentrated on the graphs of countably many Lipschitz curves. The main tool is the Lagrangian representation, which is an extension of the method of characteristics to the non-smooth setting.
Analytic continuation of viscous shock solution for the generalized Burgers equation with polynomial nonlinear source term is investigated. We show that a pertubated wave recovers its analyticity in the space variable in the strip limited by the first pair of singularities of the wave.
We define a notion of a viscous shock solution of the stochastic Burgers equation that connects "top" and "bottom" spatially stationary solutions of the same equation. Such shocks generally travel in space, but we show that they admit time-invariant measures when viewed in their own reference frames. Under such a measure, the viscous shock is a deterministic function of the bottom and top solutions and the shock location. However, the measure of the bottom and top solutions must be tilted to account for the change of reference frame. We also show a convergence result to these stationary shock …
We study an Eulerian droplet model which can be seen as the pressureless gas system with a source term, a subsystem of this model and the inviscid Burgers equation with source term. The condition for loss of regularity of a solution to Burgers equation with source term is established. The same condition applies to the Eulerian droplet model and its subsystem. The Riemann problem for the Eulerian droplet model is constructively solved by going through the solution of the Riemann problems for the inviscid Burgers equation with a source term and the subsystem, respectively. Under suitable general…
We prove the existence of generalized characteristics for weak, not necessarily entropic, solutions of Burgers' equation \[ \partial_t u +\partial_x \frac{u^2}{2} =0, \] whose entropy productions are signed measures. Such solutions arise in connection with large deviation principles for the hydrodynamic limit of interacting particle systems. The present work allows to remove a technical trace assumption in a recent result by the two first authors about the $L^2$ stability of entropic shocks among such non-entropic solutions. The proof relies on the Lagrangian representation of a solution's hyp…
In this paper, we prove the existence and uniqueness of weak entropy solutions to the Burgers-Poisson equation for initial data in L^1(R). Additional an Oleinik type estimate is established and some criteria on local smoothness and wave breaking for weak entropy solutions are provided.
We study the 2D isentropic Euler equations with the ideal gas law. We exhibit a set of smooth initial data that give rise to shock formation at a single point near the planar symmetry. These solutions are associated with non-zero vorticity at the shock and have uniform-in-time 1/3-Hölder bound. Moreover, these point shocks are of self-similar type and share the same profile, which is a solution to the 2D self-similar Burgers equation. Our proof, following the 3D shock formation result of Buckmaster, Shkoller and Vicol, is based on the stable 2D self-similar Burgers profile and the modulation m…
We study bounds on the enstrophy growth for solutions of the viscous Burgers equation on the unit circle. Using the variational formulation of Lu and Doering, we prove that the maximizer of the enstrophy's rate of change is sharp in the limit of large enstrophy up to a numerical constant but does not saturate the Poincaré inequality for mean-zero 1-periodic functions. Using the dynamical system methods, we give an asymptotic representation of the maximizer in the limit of large enstrophy as a viscous shock on the background of a linear rarefactive wave. This asymptotic construction is used to …
We obtain precise large time asymptotics for the Cauchy problem for Burgers type equations satisfying shock profile condition. The proofs are based on the exact a priori estimates for (local) solutions of these equations and a recent result of the first and second authors.
Dynamics of viscous shocks is considered in the modular Burgers equation, where the time evolution becomes complicated due to singularities produced by the modular nonlinearity. We prove that the viscous shocks are asymptotically stable under odd and general perturbations. For the odd perturbations, the proof relies on the reduction of the modular Burgers equation to a linear diffusion equation on a half-line. For the general perturbations, the proof is developed by converting the time-evolution problem to a system of linear equations coupled with a nonlinear equation for the interface positio…
Bounded weak solutions of Burgers' equation $\partial_tu+\partial_x(u^2/2)=0$ that are not entropy solutions need in general not be $BV$. Nevertheless it is known that solutions with finite entropy productions have a $BV$-like structure: a rectifiable jump set of dimension one can be identified, outside which $u$ has vanishing mean oscillation at all points. But it is not known whether all points outside this jump set are Lebesgue points, as they would be for $BV$ solutions. In the present article we show that the set of non-Lebesgue points of $u$ has Hausdorff dimension at most one. In contra…
The SBV regularity of weak entropy solutions to the Burgers-Poisson equation is considered. We show that the derivative of a solution consists of only the absolutely continuous part and the jump part.
We study the multi-dimensional Burgers equation $u_t + u u_{x_1} + \dots + u^d u_{x_d} = 0$. We prove that the $L^\infty$ norm of entropy solutions of this equation decays polynomially as $t \to \infty$ in terms of the $L^1$ norm of the initial data only.
The notion of Kruzhkov entropy solution was extended by the first author in 2007 to conservation laws with a fractional laplacian diffusion term; this notion led to well-posedness for the Cauchy problem in the $L^\infty$-framework. In the present paper, we further motivate the introduction of entropy solutions, showing that in the case of fractional diffusion of order strictly less than one, uniqueness of a weak solution may fail.
We consider the large time behavior of strong solutions to a kind of stochastic Burgers equation, where the position x is perturbed by a Brownian noise. It is well known that both the rarefaction wave and viscous shock wave are time-asymptotically stable for deterministic Burgers equation since the pioneer work of A. Ilin and O. Oleinik [21] in 1964. However, the stability of these wave patterns under stochastic perturbation is not known until now. In this paper, we give a definite answer to the stability problem of the rarefaction and viscous shock waves for the 1-d stochastic Burgers equatio…
In several space dimensions, scalar shock waves between two constant states u $\pm$ are not necessarily planar. We describe them in detail. Then we prove their asymptotic stability, assuming that they are uniformly non-characteristic. Our result is conditional for a general flux, while unconditional for the multi-D Burgers equation.
In this paper, we show uniqueness and stability for the piecewise-smooth solutions to the Burgers--Hilbert equation constructed in Bressan and Zhang [Commun. Math. Sci., 15(1):165--184, 2017]. The Burgers--Hilbert equation is $u_t+(\frac{u^2}{2})_x=\mathbf{H}[u]$ where $\mathbf{H}$ is the Hilbert transform, a nonlocal operator. We show stability and uniqueness for solutions amongst a larger class than the uniqueness result in Bressan and Zhang. The solutions we consider are measurable and bounded, satisfy at least one entropy condition, and verify a strong trace condition. We do not have small…
A relativistic generalization of the inviscid Burgers equation was proposed by LeFloch, Makhlof, and Okutmustur and then investigated on a Schwarzschild background. Here, we extend their analysis to a Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) background. This problem is more challenging due to the existence of non-trivial spatially homogeneous solutions. First, we derive the relativistic Burgers model of interest and determine its spatially homogeneous solutions. Second, we design a numerical scheme based on the finite volume methodology, which is well-balanced in the sense that spatially hom…
Several generalizations of the relativistic models of Burgers equations have recently been established and developed on different spacetime geometries. In this work, we take into account the de Sitter spacetime geometry, introduce our relativistic model by a technique based on the vanishing pressure Euler equations of relativistic compressible fluids on a (1+1)-dimensional background and construct a second order Godunov type finite volume scheme to examine numerical experiments within an analysis of the cosmological constant. Numerical results demonstrate the efficiency of the method for solut…
We study properties of solutions of the initial value problem for the nonlinear and nonlocal equation u_t+(-\partial^2_x)^{α/2} u+uu_x=0 with alpha in (0,1], supplemented with an initial datum approaching the constant states u+/u- (u_-smaller than u_+) as x goes to +/-infty, respectively. It was shown by Karch, Miao & Xu (SIAM J. Math. Anal. 39 (2008), 1536--1549) that, for alpha in (1,2), the large time asymptotics of solutions is described by rarefaction waves. The goal of this paper is to show that the asymptotic profile of solutions changes for alpha \leq 1. If alpha=1, there exists a self…
We consider Burgers equation with transverse viscosity $$\partial_tu+u\partial_xu-\partial_{yy}u=0, \ \ (x,y)\in \mathbb R^2, \ \ u:[0,T)\times \mathbb R^2\rightarrow \mathbb R.$$ We construct and describe precisely a family of solutions which become singular in finite time by having their gradient becoming unbounded. To leading order, the solution is given by a backward self-similar solution of Burgers equation along the $x$ variable, whose scaling parameters evolve according to parabolic equations along the $y$ variable, one of them being the quadratic semi-linear heat equation. We develop a…
A class of differentiable solutions is proved for the isentropic Euler equations in two and three space dimensions. The solutions are explicitly given in terms of solutions to inviscid Burgers equations, and several directions of propagation. The relative orientation of the directions is critical. Within the directional constraints, the Burgers solutions are arbitrary. The several velocities add, and the pressures combine nonlinearly. These solutions cannot exist beyond the time when shocks develop in any of the Burgers solutions.
We consider the $L^2$-contraction up to a shift for viscous shocks of scalar viscous conservation laws with strictly convex fluxes in one space dimension. In the case of a flux which is a small perturbation of the quadratic burgers flux, we show that any viscous shock induces a contraction in $L^2$, up to a shift. That is, the $L^2$ norm of the difference of any solution of the viscous conservation law, with an appropriate shift of the shock wave, does not increase in time. If, in addition, the difference between the initial value of the solution and the shock wave is also bounded in $L^1$, th…
We show that, for first-order systems of conservation laws with a strictly convex entropy,in particular for the very simple so-called "inviscid" Burgers equation,it is possible to address the Cauchy problem by a suitable convex minimizationproblem, quite similar to some problems arising in optimal transport or variational mean-field game theory. In the general case, we show that smooth, shock-free, solutions can be recoveredon some sufficiently small interval of time. In the special situation of the Burgers equation, we furthershow that every "entropy solution" (in the sense of Kruzhkov)includi…
The Cauchy problem for a scalar conservation laws admits a unique entropy solution when the data $u_0$ is a bounded measurable function (Kruzhkov). The semi-group $(S_t)_{t\ge0}$ is contracting in the $L^1$-distance. For the multi-dimensional Burgers equation, we show that $(S_t)_{t\ge0}$ extends uniquely as a continuous semi-group over $L^p(\mathbb{R}^n)$ whenever $1\le p<\infty$, and $u(t):=S_tu_0$ is actually an entropy solution to the Cauchy problem. When $p\le q\le \infty$ and $t>0$, $S_t$ actually maps $L^p(\mathbb{R}^n)$ into $L^q(\mathbb{R}^n)$. These results are based upon new dispers…
In the paper, the large time behavior of solutions of the Cauchy problem for the one dimensional fractal Burgers equation $u_t+(-\partial^2_x)^{α/2} u+uu_x=0$ with $α\in (1,2)$ is studied. It is shown that if the nondecreasing initial datum approaches the constant states $u_\pm$ ($u_-<u_+$) as $x\to \pm\infty$, respectively, then the corresponding solution converges toward the rarefaction wave, {\it i.e.} the unique entropy solution of the Riemann problem for the nonviscous Burgers equation.
We prove wave breaking (shock formation) for some Whitham-type equations which include the Burgers-Hilbert equation, the fractional Korteweg-de Vries equation, and the classical Whitham equation. The result seems to be new for the Burgers-Hilbert equation. In the other cases we provide simpler proofs than the known ones.
The paper is concerned with the propagation of ion-acoustic shock waves in a collision dominated plasma. We firstly establish the existence and uniqueness of a small-amplitude smooth travelling wave, then justify its approximation to the shock profile of the KdV-Burgers equations in a suitable asymptotic regime where dissipation in terms of viscosity coefficient is much stronger than dispersion by the Debye length, and prove in the end the large time asymptotic stability of travelling waves under suitably small smooth perturbations.
We establish one-dimensional spectral stability of small amplitude viscous and relaxation shock profiles using Evans function techniques to perform a series of reductions and normal forms to reduce to the case of the scalar Burgers equation. In multidimensions, the canonical behavior is described, rather by a 2x2 viscous conservation law; this case will be treated in a companion paper by similar techniques.
The paper recalls two of the regularity results for Burgers' equation, and discusses what happens in the case of genuinely nonlinear, strictly hyperbolic systems of conservation laws. The first regularity result which is considered is Oleinik-Ambroso-De Lellis SBV estimate: it provides bounds on the x-derivative of u when u is an entropy solution of the Cauchy problem for Burgers' equation with bounded initial data. Its extensions to the case of systems is then mentioned. The second regularity result of debate is Schaeffer's theorem: entropy solutions to Burgers' equation with smooth and gener…
In this paper, we investigate and prove the nonlinear stability of viscous shock wave solutions of a scalar viscous conservation law, using the methods developed for general systems of conservation laws by Howard, Mascia, Zumbrun and others, based on instantaneous tracking of the location of the perturbed viscous shock wave. In some sense, this paper extends the treatment in a previous expository work of Zumbrun ["Instantaneous shock location ..."] on Burgers equation to the general case, giving an exposition of these methods in the simplest setting of scalar equations. In particular we give b…
We consider scalar conservation laws with convex flux and random initial data. The Hopf-Lax formula induces a deterministic evolution of the law of the initial data. In a recent article, we derived a kinetic theory and Lax equations to describe the evolution of the law under the assumption that the initial data is a spectrally negative Markov process. Here we show that: (i) the Lax equations are Hamiltonian and describe a principle of least action on the Markov group that is in analogy with geodesic flow on $SO(N)$; (ii) the Lax equations are completely integrable and linearized via a loop-gro…
We extend our result of [1] and show that one can associate with the stochastically perturbed non-viscid Burgers equation a system of viscous balance laws. The Cauchy data for the Burgers equation generates the data for this system. Till the moment of the shock formation in the solution to the Burgers equation the above system of viscous balance laws can be reduced to the pressureless gas dynamics system (in a limit as the parameters of perturbation tend to zero). If the solution to the Burgers equation contains shocks, the limit system is equivalent to the system with a specific pressure, in …
The shock discontinuities, generically present in inviscid solutions of the forced Burgers equation, and their bifurcations happening in the course of time (perestroikas) are classified in two and three dimensions -- the one-dimensional case is well known. This classification is a result of selecting among all the perestroikas occurring for minimum functions depending generically on time, the ones permitted by the convexity of the Hamiltonian of the Burgers dynamics. Topological restrictions on the admissible perestroikas of shocks are obtained. The resulting classification can be extended to …
We investigate the $L^p $ asymptotic behavior $(1\le p \le \infty)$ of a perturbation of a Lax or overcompressive type shock wave solution to a system of conservation law in one dimension. The system of the equations can be strictly parabolic, or have real viscosity matrix (partially parabolic, e.g., compressible Navier--Stokes equations or equations of Magnetohydrodynamics). We use known pointwise Green function bounds for the linearized equation around the shock to show that the perturbation of such a solution can be decomposed into a part corresponding to shift in shock position or shape, a…
