In the current paper we consider an inverse boundary value problem of electromagnetism with nonlinear Second Harmonic Generation (SHG) process. We show the unique determination of the electromagnetic material parameters and the SHG susceptibility parameter of the medium by making electromagnetic measurements on the boundary. We are interested in the case when a frequency is fixed.
In this note we consider boundary value problems in electromagnetism. We prove well-posedness results for the time-harmonic Maxwell equations in the setting of Riemannian manifolds. We also consider the eigenvalue problem the homogeneous time-harmonic Maxwell equations with zero boundary conditions.
In the current paper we consider an inverse boundary value problem of electromagnetism in a nonlinear Kerr medium. We show the unique determination of the electromagnetic material parameters and the nonlinear susceptibility parameters of the medium by making electromagnetic measurements on the boundary. We are interested in the case of the time-harmonic Maxwell equations.
We prove resolvent estimates in $L^p$-spaces for time-harmonic Maxwell's equations in two spatial dimensions and in three dimensions in the partially anisotropic case. In the two-dimensional case the estimates are sharp up to endpoints. We consider anisotropic permittivity and permeability, which are both taken to be time-independent and spatially homogeneous. For the proof we diagonalize time-harmonic Maxwell's equations to equations involving Half-Laplacians. We apply these estimates to infer a Limiting Absorption Principle in intersections of $L^p$-spaces and to localize eigenvalues for per…
In this work we investigate the L^p-L^q-mapping properties of the resolvent associated with the time-harmonic isotropic Maxwell operator. As spectral parameters close to the spectrum are also covered by our analysis, we obtain an L^p-L^q-type Limiting Absorption Principle for this operator. Our analysis relies on new results for Helmholtz systems with zero order non-Hermitian perturbations. Moreover, we provide an improved version of the Limiting Absorption Principle for Hermitian (self-adjoint) Helmholtz systems.
We prove a uniqueness theorem for an inverse boundary value problem for the Maxwell system with boundary data assumed known only in part of the bound- ary. We assume that the inaccessible part of the boundary is either part of a plane, or part of a sphere. This work generalizes the results obtained by Isakov for the Schrödinger equation to Maxwell equations.
We consider the inverse problem of determining the isotropic inhomogeneous electromagnetic coefficients of the non-stationary Maxwell equations in a bounded domain of R^3, from a finite number of boundary measurements. Our main result is a Hölder stability estimate for the inverse problem, where the measurements are exerted only in some boundary components. For it, we prove a global Carleman estimate for the heterogeneous Maxwell's system with boundary conditions.
This paper considers a class of nonlinear time harmonic Maxwell systems at fixed frequency, with nonlinear terms taking the form $\mathscr{X}(x,|\vec E(x)|^2)\vec E(x)$, $\mathscr{Y}(x,|\vec H(x)|^2)\vec H(x)$, such that $\mathscr{X}(x,s)$, $\mathscr{Y}(x,s)$ are both real analytic in $s$. Such nonlinear terms appear in nonlinear optics theoretical models. Under certain regularity conditions, it can be shown that boundary measurements of tangent components of the electric and magnetic fields determine the electric permittivity and magnetic permeability functions as well as the form of the nonl…
In this article we consider an inverse boundary value problem for the time-harmonic Maxwell equations. We show that the electromagnetic material parameters are determined by boundary measurements where part of the boundary data is measured on a possibly very small set. This is an extension of earlier scalar results of Bukhgeim-Uhlmann and Kenig-Sjöstrand-Uhlmann to the Maxwell system. The main contribution is to show that the Carleman estimate approach to scalar partial data inverse problems introduced in those works can be carried over to the Maxwell system.
The focus of this paper is the study of the regularity properties of the time harmonic Maxwell's equations with anisotropic complex coefficients, in a bounded domain with $C^{1,1}$ boundary. We assume that at least one of the material parameters is $W^{1,3+δ}$ for some $δ>0$. Using regularity theory for second order elliptic partial differential equations, we derive $W^{1,p}$ estimates and Hölder estimates for electric and magnetic fields up to the boundary. We also derive interior estimates in bi-anisotropic media.
We consider Calderón's inverse boundary value problems for a class of nonlinear Helmholtz Schrödinger equations and Maxwell's equations in a bounded domain in $\R^n$. The main method is the higher-order linearization of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map of the corresponding equations. The local uniqueness of the linearized partial data Calderón's inverse problem is obtained following \cite{DKSU}. The Runge approximation properties and unique continuation principle allow us to extend to global situations. Simultaneous recovery of some unknown cavity$/$boundary and coefficients are given as some appl…
We consider an inverse boundary value problem for Maxwell's equations, which aims to recover the electromagnetic material properties of a body from measurements on the boundary. We show that a Lipschitz continuous conductivity, electric permittivity, and magnetic permeability are uniquely determined by knowledge of all tangential electric and magnetic fields on the boundary of the body at a fixed frequency.
We consider two inverse boundary value problems for the time-harmonic Maxwell equations in an infinite slab. Assuming that tangential boundary data for the electric and magnetic fields at a fixed frequency is available either on subsets of one boundary hyperplane, or on subsets of different boundary hyperplanes, we show that the electromagnetic material parameters, the conductivity, electric permittivity, and magnetic permeability, are uniquely determined by these partial measurements.
This paper considers the time-harmonic Maxwell equations with impedance boundary condition. We present $H^2$-norm bound and other high-order norm bounds for strong solutions. The $H^2$-estimate have been derived in [M. Dauge, M. Costabel and S. Nicaise, Tech. Rep. 10-09, IRMAR (2010)] for the case with homogeneous boundary condition. Unfortunately, their method can not be applied to the inhomogeneous case. The main novelty of this paper is that we follow the spirit of the $H^1$-estimate in [R. Hiptmair, A. Moiola and I. Perugia, Math. Models Methods Appl. Sci., 21(2011), pp. 2263-2287] and modi…
This work is concerned with an inverse electromagnetic scattering problem in two dimensions. We prove that in the TE polarization case, the knowledge of the electric far-field pattern incited by a single incoming wave is sufficient to uniquely determine the shape of a penetrable scatterer of rectangular type. As a by-product, the uniqueness is also confirmed to inverse transmission problems modelled by scalar Helmholtz equations with discontinuous normal derivatives at the scattering interface. Keywords: Uniqueness, inverse medium scattering, Maxwell equations, one incoming wave, shape identif…
We are interested in the uniqueness of solutions to Maxwell's equations when the magnetic permeability $μ$ and the permittivity $\varepsilon$ are symmetric positive definite matrix-valued functions in $\mathbb{R}^{3}$. We show that a unique continuation result for globally $W^{1,\infty}$ coefficients in a smooth, bounded domain, allows one to prove that the solution is unique in the case of coefficients which are piecewise $W^{1,\infty}$ with respect to a suitable countable collection of sub-domains with $C^{0}$ boundaries. Such suitable collections include any bounded finite collection. The p…
This paper concerns the quantitative step of the medical imaging modality Thermo-acoustic Tomography (TAT). We model the radiation propagation by a system of Maxwell's equations. We show that the index of refraction of light and the absorption coefficient (conductivity) can be uniquely and stably reconstructed from a sufficiently large number of TAT measurements. Our method is based on verifying that the linearization of the inverse problem forms a redundant elliptic system of equations. We also observe that the reconstructions are qualitatively quite different from the setting where radiation…
In this paper, we study the regularity of the solutions of Maxwell's equations in a bounded domain. We consider several different types of low regularity assumptions to the coefficients which are all less than Lipschitz. We first develop a new approach by giving $\mathcal{H}^1$ estimate when the coefficients are $\mathcal{L}^{\infty}$ bounded; and then we derive $\mathcal{W}^{1,p}$ estimates for every $p > 2$ when one of the leading coefficients is simply continuous; Finally, we extend the result to $\mathcal{C}^{1,α}$ almost everywhere for the solution of the homogeneous Maxwell's equations w…
Here we derive some results on so called quantitative Runge approximation in the case of the time-harmonic Maxwell equations. This provides a Runge approximation having more explicit quantitative information. We additionally derive some results on the conditional stability of the Cauchy problem for the time-harmonic Maxwell equations.
We carry out the homogenization of time-harmonic Maxwell's equations in a periodic, layered structure made of two-dimensional (2D) metallic sheets immersed in a heterogeneous and in principle anisotropic dielectric medium. In this setting, the tangential magnetic field exhibits a jump across each sheet. Our goal is the rigorous derivation of the effective dielectric permittivity of the system from the solution of a local cell problem via suitable averages. Each sheet has a fine-scale, inhomogeneous and possibly anisotropic surface conductivity that scales linearly with the microstructure scale…
Pride (1994, Phys. Rev. B 50 15678-96) derived the governing model of electroseismic conversion, in which Maxwell's equations are coupled with Biot's equations through an electrokinetic mobility parameter. The inverse problem of electroseismic conversion was first studied by Chen and Yang (2013, Inverse Problem 29 115006). By following the construction of Complex Geometrical Optics (CGO) solutions to a matrix \Schrodinger equation introduced by Ola and Somersalo (1996, SIAM J. Appl. Math. 56 No. 4 1129-1145), we analyze the reconstruction of conductivity, permittivity and the electrokinetic mo…
We find solutions $E:Ω\to\mathbb{R}^3$ of the problem \[ \left\{\begin{aligned} &\nabla\times(\nabla\times E) + λE = \partial_E F(x,E) &&\quad \text{in}Ω\\ &ν\times E = 0 &&\quad \text{on}\partialΩ\end{aligned} \right. \] on a simply connected, smooth, bounded domain $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^3$ with connected boundary and exterior normal $ν:\partialΩ\to\mathbb{R}^3$. Here $\nabla\times$ denotes the curl operator in $\mathbb{R}^3$, the nonlinearity $F:Ω\times\mathbb{R}^3\to\mathbb{R}$ is superquadratic and subcritical in $E$. The model nonlinearity is of the form $F(x,E)=Γ(x)|E|^p$ for $Γ\in L^\inft…
The article deals with electrodynamics in the presence of anisotropic materials having scalar wave impedance. Maxwell's equations written for differential forms over a 3-manifold are analysed. The system is extended to a Dirac type first order elliptic system on the Grassmannian bundle over the manifold. The second part of the article deals with the dynamical inverse boundary value problem of determining the electromagnetic material parameters from boundary measurements. By using the boundary control method, it is proved that the dynamical boundary data determines the electromagnetic travel ti…
We consider a linearised inverse conductivity problem for electromagnetic waves in a three dimensional bounded domain at a high time-harmonic frequency. Increasing stability bounds for the conductivity coefficient in the full Maxwell system and in a simplified transverse electric mode are derived. These bounds contain a Lipschitz term with a factor growing polynomially in terms of the frequency, a Holder term, and a logarithmic term which decays with respect to the frequency as a power. To validate this increasing stability numerically, we propose a reconstruction algorithm aiming at the recov…
We investigate the existence of solutions $E:\mathbb{R}^3\to\mathbb{R}^3$ of the time-harmonic semilinear Maxwell equation $$\nabla\times(\nabla\times E) + V(x) E = \partial_E F(x,E) \quad \text{in}\mathbb{R}^3,$$ where $V:\mathbb{R}^3\to\mathbb{R}$, $V(x)\leq 0$ a.e. on $\mathbb{R}^3$, $\nabla\times$ denotes the curl operator in $\mathbb{R}^3$ and $F:\mathbb{R}^3\times\mathbb{R}^3\to\mathbb{R}$ is a nonlinear function in $E$. In particular we find a ground state solution provided that suitable growth conditions on $F$ are imposed and $L^{3/2}$-norm of $V$ is less than the best Sobolev constan…
This paper is concerned with an inverse random source problem for the three-dimensional time-harmonic Maxwell equations. The source is assumed to be a centered complex-valued Gaussian vector field with correlated components, and its covariance operator is a pseudo-differential operator. The well-posedness of the direct source scattering problem is established and the regularity of the electromagnetic field is given. For the inverse source scattering problem, the micro-correlation strength matrix of the covariance operator is shown to be uniquely determined by the high frequency limit of the ex…
We consider the time-harmonic Maxwell system in a domain with a generalized impedance edge-corner, namely the presence of two generalized impedance planes that intersect at an edge. The impedance parameter can be $0, \infty$ or a finite non-identically vanishing variable function. We establish an accurate relationship between the vanishing order of the solutions to the Maxwell system and the dihedral angle of the edge-corner. In particular, if the angle is irrational, the vanishing order is infinity, i.e. strong unique continuation holds from the edge-corner. The establishment of those new qua…
This paper is concerned with analysis of electromagnetic wave scattering by an obstacle which is embedded in a two-layered lossy medium separated by an unbounded rough surface. Given a dipole point source, the direct problem is to determine the electromagnetic wave field for the given obstacle and unbounded rough surface; the inverse problem is to reconstruct simultaneously the obstacle and unbounded rough surface from the electromagnetic field measured on a plane surface above the obstacle. For the direct problem, a new boundary integral equation is proposed and its well-posedness is establis…
In this paper we prove uniqueness for an inverse boundary value problem (IBVP) arising in electrodynamics. We assume that the electromagnetic properties of the medium, namely the magnetic permeability, the electric permittivity and the conductivity, are described by continuously differentiable functions.
This paper is concerned with the scattering problem for time-harmonic electromagnetic waves, due to the presence of scatterers and of inhomogeneities in the medium. We prove a sharp stability result for the solutions to the direct electromagnetic scattering problem, with respect to variations of the scatterer and of the inhomogeneity, under minimal regularity assumptions for both of them. The stability result leads to uniform bounds on solutions to the scattering problems for an extremely general class of admissible scatterers and inhomogeneities. The uniform bounds are a key step to tackle th…
We solve time-harmonic Maxwell's equations in anisotropic, spatially homogeneous media in intersections of $L^p$-spaces. The material laws are time-independent. The analysis requires Fourier restriction-extension estimates for perturbations of Fresnel's wave surface. This surface can be decomposed into finitely many components of the following three types: smooth surfaces with non-vanishing Gaussian curvature, smooth surfaces with Gaussian curvature vanishing along one-dimensional submanifolds, but without flat points, and surfaces with conical singularities. Our estimates are based on new Boc…
We study Maxwell's equations in time domain in an anisotropic medium. The goal of the paper is to solve an inverse boundary value problem for anisotropies characterized by scalar impedance $α$. This means that the material is conformal, i.e., the electric permittivity $ε$ and magnetic permeability $μ$ are tensors satisfying $μ=α^2ε$. This condition is equivalent to a single propagation speed of waves with different polarizations which uniquely defines an underlying Riemannian structure. The analysis is based on an invariant formulation of the system of electrodynamics as a Dirac type first ord…
We prove global Hölder regularity for the solutions to the time-harmonic anisotropic Maxwell's equations, under the assumptions of Hölder continuous coefficients. The regularity hypotheses on the coefficients are minimal. The same estimates hold also in the case of bianisotropic material parameters.
We prove that the time-harmonic solutions to Maxwell's equations in a 3D exterior domain converge to a certain static solution as the frequency tends to zero. We work in weighted Sobolev spaces and construct new compactly supported replacements for Dirichlet-Neumann fields. Moreover, we even show convergence in operator norm.
We consider the inverse problem of determining the Lamé parameters and the density of a three-dimensional elastic body from the local time-harmonic Dirichlet-to-Neumann map. We prove uniqueness and Lipschitz stability of this inverse problem when the Lamé parameters and the density are assumed to be piecewise constant on a given domain partition.
In this chapter of the book entitled, "Extending the Theory of Composites to Other Areas of Science" [edited by Graeme W. Milton, 2016] we derive the analyticity properties of the electromagnetic Dirichlet-to-Neumann map for the time-harmonic Maxwell's equations for passive linear multicomponent media. Moreover, we discuss the connection of this map to Herglotz functions for isotropic and anisotropic multicomponent composites.
We derive conditional stability estimates for inverse scattering problems related to time harmonic magnetic Schrödinger equation. We prove logarithmic type estimates for retrieving the magnetic (up to a gradient) and electric potentials from near field or far field maps. Our approach combines techniques from similar results obtained in the literature for inhomogeneous inverse scattering problems based on the use of geometrical optics solutions.
When a porous rock is saturated with an electrolyte, electrical fields are coupled with seismic waves via the electro-seismic conversion. Pride derived the governing models, in which Maxwell equations are coupled with Biot equations through the electro-kinetic mobility parameter. The inverse problem of the linearized electro-seismic conversion consists in two step, namely the inversion of Biot equations and the inversion of Maxwell equations. We analyze the reconstruction of conductivity and electro-kinetic mobility parameter in Maxwell equations with internal measurements, while the internal …
We prove that the electromagnetic material parameters are uniquely determined by boundary measurements for the time-harmonic Maxwell equations in certain anisotropic settings. We give a uniqueness result in the inverse problem for Maxwell equations on an admissible Riemannian manifold, and a uniqueness result for Maxwell equations in Euclidean space with admissible matrix coefficients. The proofs are based on a new Fourier analytic construction of complex geometrical optics solutions on admissible manifolds, and involve a proper notion of uniqueness for such solutions.
We discuss the radiation problem of total reflection for a time-harmonic generalized Maxwell system in a non-smooth exterior domain with non-smooth inhomogeneous, anisotropic coefficients converging near infinity with a certain rate towards the identity. By means of the limiting absorption principle, a Fredholm alternative holds true and the eigensolutions decay polynomially resp. exponentially at infinity. We prove that the corresponding eigenvalues do not accumulate even at zero. Next, we show the convergence of the time-harmonic solutions to a solution of an electro-magneto static Maxwell s…
We prove polynomial and exponential decay at infinity of eigen-vectors of partial differential operators related to radiation problems for time-harmonic generalized Maxwell systems in an exterior domain with non-smooth inhomogeneous, anisotropic coefficients converging near infinity with a certain rate towards the identity. As a canonical application we show that the corresponding eigen-values do not accumulate in R \ {0} and that by means of Eidus' limiting absorption principle a Fredholm alternative holds true.
We continue the study of the operator of generalized Maxwell equations and completely discover the behavior of the solutions of the time-harmonic equations as the frequency tends to zero. Thereby, we identify degenerate operators in terms of special 'polynomially growing' solutions of a corresponding static problem, which must be added to the 'usual' Neumann series in order to describe the low frequency asymptotic adequately.
We consider for the full time-dependent Maxwell's equations the inverse problem of identifying locations and certain properties of small electromagnetic inhomogeneities in a homogeneous background medium from dynamic boundary measurements on the boundary for a finite time interval.
We study the permanent regimes of the reduced Vlasov-Maxwell system for laser-plasma interaction. A non-relativistic and two different relativistic models are investigated. We prove the existence of solutions where the distribution function is Boltzmannian and the electromagnetic variables are time-harmonic and circularly polarized.
Let $b_d$ be the Weyl symbol of the inverse to the harmonic oscillator on $\R^d$. We prove that $b_d$ and its derivatives satisfy convenient bounds of Gevrey and Gelfand-Shilov type, and obtain explicit expressions for $b_d$. In the even-dimensional case we characterize $b_d$ in terms of elementary functions. In the analysis we use properties of radial symmetry and a combination of different techniques involving classical a priori estimates, commutator identities, power series and asymptotic expansions.
The search for time-harmonic solutions of nonlinear Maxwell equations in the absence of charges and currents leads to the elliptic equation $$\nabla\times\left(μ(x)^{-1} \nabla\times u\right) - ω^2\varepsilon(x)u = f(x,u)$$ for the field $u:Ω\to\mathbb{R}^3$ in a domain $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^3$. Here $\varepsilon(x) \in \mathbb{R}^{3\times3}$ is the (linear) permittivity tensor of the material, and $μ(x) \in \mathbb{R}^{3\times3}$ denotes the magnetic permeability tensor. The nonlinearity $f:Ω\times\mathbb{R}^3\to\mathbb{R}^3$ comes from the nonlinear polarization. If $f=\nabla_uF$ is a gradient…
We are interested in the homogenization of energy like quantities for electromagnetic waves in the high frequency limit for Maxwell's equations with various boundary conditions. We use a scaled variant of H-measures known as semi classical measures or Wigner measures. Firstly, we consider this system in the half space of $\R^3$ in the time harmonic and with conductor boundary condition at the flat boundary $x_3=0$. Secondly we consider the same system but with Calderon boundary condition. Thirdly, we consider this system in the curved interface case.
