In this work we investigate the L^p-L^q-mapping properties of the resolvent associated with the time-harmonic isotropic Maxwell operator. As spectral parameters close to the spectrum are also covered by our analysis, we obtain an L^p-L^q-type Limiting Absorption Principle for this operator. Our analysis relies on new results for Helmholtz systems with zero order non-Hermitian perturbations. Moreover, we provide an improved version of the Limiting Absorption Principle for Hermitian (self-adjoint) Helmholtz systems.
We consider Calderón's inverse boundary value problems for a class of nonlinear Helmholtz Schrödinger equations and Maxwell's equations in a bounded domain in $\R^n$. The main method is the higher-order linearization of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map of the corresponding equations. The local uniqueness of the linearized partial data Calderón's inverse problem is obtained following \cite{DKSU}. The Runge approximation properties and unique continuation principle allow us to extend to global situations. Simultaneous recovery of some unknown cavity$/$boundary and coefficients are given as some appl…
We construct a regular isotropic approximate cloak for the Maxwell system of equations. The method of transformation optics has enabled the design of electromagnetic parameters that cloak a region from external observation. However, these constructions are singular and anisotropic, making practical implementation difficult. Thus, regular approximations to these cloaks have been constructed that cloak a given region to any desired degree of accuracy. In this paper, we show how to construct isotropic approximations to these regularized cloaks using homogenization techniques, so that one obtains …
We show global-in-time Strichartz estimates for the isotropic Maxwell system with divergence free data. On the scalar permittivity and permeability we impose decay assumptions as $|x|\to\infty$ and a non-trapping condition. The proof is based on smoothing estimates in weighted $L^2$ spaces which follow from corresponding resolvent estimates for the underlying Helmholtz problem.
We couple the mixed variational problem for the generalized Hodge-Helmholtz or Hodge-Laplace equation posed on a bounded three-dimensional Lipschitz domain with the first-kind boundary integral equation arising from the latter when constant coefficients are assumed in the unbounded complement. Recently developed Calderon projectors for the relevant boundary integral operators are used to perform a symmetric coupling. We prove stability of the coupled problem away from resonant frequencies by establishing a generalized Garding inequality (T-coercivity). The resulting system of equations describ…
This work is concerned with an inverse electromagnetic scattering problem in two dimensions. We prove that in the TE polarization case, the knowledge of the electric far-field pattern incited by a single incoming wave is sufficient to uniquely determine the shape of a penetrable scatterer of rectangular type. As a by-product, the uniqueness is also confirmed to inverse transmission problems modelled by scalar Helmholtz equations with discontinuous normal derivatives at the scattering interface. Keywords: Uniqueness, inverse medium scattering, Maxwell equations, one incoming wave, shape identif…
This paper concerns the quantitative step of the medical imaging modality Thermo-acoustic Tomography (TAT). We model the radiation propagation by a system of Maxwell's equations. We show that the index of refraction of light and the absorption coefficient (conductivity) can be uniquely and stably reconstructed from a sufficiently large number of TAT measurements. Our method is based on verifying that the linearization of the inverse problem forms a redundant elliptic system of equations. We also observe that the reconstructions are qualitatively quite different from the setting where radiation…
The purpose of this paper is to prove that the spectrum of an isotropic Maxwell operator with electric permittivity and magnetic permeability that are periodic along certain directions and tending to a constant super-exponentially fast in the remaining directions is purely absolutely continuous. The basic technical tools is a new ``operatorial'' identity relating the Maxwell operator to a vector-valued Schrodinger operator. The analysis of the spectrum of that operator is then handled using ideas developed by the same authors in a previous paper.
We shall give conditions on the illuminations $φ_{i}$ such that the solutions to Maxwell's equations \[ \left\{ \begin{array}{l} {\rm curl} E^{i}=iωμH^{i}\qquad\text{in }Ω,\\ {\rm curl} H^{i}=-i(ω\varepsilon+iσ)E^{i}\qquad\text{in }Ω,\\ E^{i}\timesν=φ_{i}\timesν\qquad\text{on }\partialΩ, \end{array}\right. \] satisfy certain non-zero qualitative properties inside the domain $Ω$, provided that a finite number of frequencies $ω$ are chosen in a fixed range. The illuminations are explicitly constructed. This theory finds applications in several hybrid imaging problems, where unknown parameters ha…
The usual Helmholtz decomposition gives a decomposition of any vector valued function into a sum of gradient of a scalar function and rotation of a vector valued function under some mild condition. In this paper we show that the vector valued function of the second term i.e. the divergence free part of this decomposition can be further decomposed into a sum of a vector valued function polarized in one component and the rotation of a vector valued function also polarized in the same component. Hence the divergence free part only depends on two scalar functions. Further we show the so called com…
We propose some modification of Maxwell's equations describing mediums which electric and magnetic properties are changed essentially after interaction with outer electromagnetic field. We show for such mediums that electromagnetic waves have finite speed of propagations property for some time depending on initial energy of electromagnetic field and nonlinear parameters of the problem which are responsible for properties of medium.
In this paper, we consider near cloaking for the full Maxwell equations. We extend the recent results, where the quasi-static limit case and the Helmholtz equation are considered, to electromagnetic scattering problems. We construct very effective near cloaking structures for the electromagnetic scattering problem at a fixed frequency. These new structures are, before using the transformation optics, layered structures and are designed so that their first scattering coefficients vanish. Inside the cloaking region, any target has near-zero scattering cross section for a band of frequencies. We …
We study boundary determination for an inverse problem associated to the time-harmonic Maxwell equations and another associated to the isotropic elasticity system. We identify the electromagnetic parameters and the Lamé moduli for these two systems from the corresponding boundary measurements. In a first step we reconstruct Lipschitz magnetic permeability, electric permittivity and conductivity on the surface from the ideal boundary measurements. Then, we study inverse problems for Maxwell equations and the isotropic elasticity system assuming that the data contains measurement errors. For bot…
In this paper, we consider inverse time-harmonic acoustic and electromagnetic scattering from locally perturbed rough surfaces in three dimensions. The scattering interface is supposed to be the graph of a Lipschitz continuous function with compact support. It is proved that an acoustically sound-soft or sound-hard surface can be uniquely determined by the far-field pattern of infinite number of incident plane waves with distinct directions. Moreover, a single point source or plane wave can be used to uniquely determine a scattering surface of polyhedral type. These uniqueness results apply to…
This paper extends approach of our joint paper with Kähler and recent paper of the author, published in 2021, on problems of the static Maxwell system in three dimensional inhomogeneous media. Applied pseudoanalytic function theory developed by Kravchenko et al. allows to characterize, in particular, meridional and transverse fields in cylindrically layered media. Geometric properties of the electric field gradient ($EFG$) tensor within a wide range of meridional fields allows us to introduce the concept of $α$-meridional mappings of the first and second kind depending on the values of a real …
In this paper, we establish the discreteness of transmission eigenvalues for Maxwell's equations. More precisely, we show that the spectrum of the transmission eigenvalue problem is discrete, if the electromagnetic parameters $\eps, \, μ, \, \heps, \, \hmu$ in the equations characterizing the inhomogeneity and background, are smooth in some neighborhood of the boundary, isotropic on the boundary, and satisfy the conditions $\eps \neq \heps$, $μ\neq \hmu$, and $\eps/ μ\neq \heps/ \hmu$ on the boundary. These are quite general assumptions on the coefficients which are easy to check. To our knowl…
This paper treats the time-harmonic electro-magnetic scattering or radiation problem governed by Maxwell's equations in an exterior weak Lipschitz domain divided into two disjoint weak Lipschitz parts We will present a solution theory using the framework of polynomially weighted Sobolev spaces for the rotation and divergence. We will show a Fredholm alternative type result to hold using the principle of limiting absorption introduced by Eidus in the 1960's. The necessary a-priori-estimate and polynomial decay of eigenfunctions for the Maxwell equations will be obtained by transferring well kno…
In this chapter of the book entitled, "Extending the Theory of Composites to Other Areas of Science" [edited by Graeme W. Milton, 2016] we derive the analyticity properties of the electromagnetic Dirichlet-to-Neumann map for the time-harmonic Maxwell's equations for passive linear multicomponent media. Moreover, we discuss the connection of this map to Herglotz functions for isotropic and anisotropic multicomponent composites.

This article is concerned with the time-harmonic electromagnetic (EM) scattering from a generic inhomogeneous medium. It is shown that if there is a right corner on the support of the medium, then it scatters every pair of incident EM fields, excluding a possible class of EM fields which are of very particular forms. That is, for every pair of admissible incident EM fields, the corresponding scattered wave fields associated to the medium scatterer cannot be identically vanishing outside the support of the medium. Indeed, we achieve the corner scattering result by establishing a stronger result…
