We study the positivity of the first Chern class of a rank r Ulrich vector bundle E on a smooth n-dimensional variety $X \subseteq \mathbb P^N$. We prove that $c_1(E)$ is very positive on every subvariety not contained in the union of lines in X. In particular if X is not covered by lines, then E is big and $c_1(E)^n \ge r^n$. Moreover we classify rank r Ulrich vector bundles E with $c_1(E)^2=0$ on surfaces and with $c_1(E)^2=0$ or $c_1(E)^3=0$ on threefolds (with some exceptions).
In this article, we give numerical restrictions on the Chern classes of Ulrich bundles on higher-dimensional manifolds, which are inspired by the results of Casnati in the case of surfaces. As a by-product, we prove that the only projective manifolds whose tangent bundle is Ulrich are the twisted cubic and the Veronese surface. Moreover, we prove that the cotangent bundle is never Ulrich.
In this work we characterize Ulrich bundles of any rank on polarized rational ruled surfaces over $\mathbb{P}^1$. We show that every Ulrich bundle admits a resolution in terms of line bundles. Conversely, given an injective map between suitable totally decomposed vector bundles, we show that its cokernel is Ulrich if it satisfies a vanishing in cohomology. As a consequence we obtain, once we fix a polarization, the existence of Ulrich bundles for any admissible rank and first Chern class. Moreover we show the existence of stable Ulrich bundles for certain pairs $(\textrm{rk}(E),c_1(E))$ and wi…
Given a smooth del Pezzo surface $X_d \subseteq \mathbb{P}^{d}$ of degree $d,$ we show that a smooth irreducible curve $C$ on $X_d$ represents the first Chern class of an Ulrich bundle on $X_d$ if and only if its kernel bundle $M_C$ admits a generalized theta-divisor. This result is applied to produce new examples of complete intersection curves with semistable kernel bundle, and also combined with work of Farkas-Mustaţǎ-Popa to relate the existence of Ulrich bundles on $X_d$ to the Minimal Resolution Conjecture for curves lying on $X_d.$ In particular, we show that a smooth irreducible curve …
The existence of stable ACM vector bundles of high rank on algebraic varieties is a challenging problem. In this paper, we study stable Ulrich bundles (that is, stable ACM bundles whose corresponding module has the maximum number of generators) on nonsingular cubic surfaces $X \subset \mathbb{P}^3.$ We give necessary and sufficient conditions on the first Chern class $D$ for the existence of stable Ulrich bundles on $X$ of rank $r$ and $c_1=D$. When such bundles exist, we prove that that the corresponding moduli space of stable bundles is smooth and irreducible of dimension $D^2-2r^2+1$ and co…
It is well known that the Chern classes $c_i$ of a rank $n$ vector bundle on $\PP^N$, generated by global sections, are non-negative if $i\leq n$ and vanish otherwise. This paper deals with the following question: does the above result hold for the wider class of reflexive sheaves? We show that the Chern numbers $c_i$ with $i\geq 4$ can be arbitrarily negative for reflexive sheaves of any rank; on the contrary for $i\leq 3$ we show positivity of the $c_i$ with weaker hypothesis. We obtain lower bounds for $c_1$, $c_2$ and $c_3$ for every reflexive sheaf $\FF$ which is generated by $H^0\FF$ on …
We show that the Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson class of a Schubert cell in a Grassmannian is represented by a reduced and irreducible subvariety in each degree. This gives an affirmative answer to a positivity conjecture of Aluffi and Mihalcea.
We give a combinatorial interpretation of a certain positivity conjecture of Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson classes, as stated by P. Aluffi and the author in a previous paper. It translates into a positivity property for a sum of p by p determinants consisting of binomial coefficients, generalizing the classical Theorem of Lindstrom-Gessel-Viennot et al. which computes these determinants in terms of non-intersecting lattice paths. We prove this conjecture for p=2,3.
Let $ (E,h) $ be a Griffiths semipositive Hermitian holomorphic vector bundle of rank $ 3 $ over a complex manifold. In this paper, we prove the positivity of the characteristic differential form $ c_1(E,h) \wedge c_2(E,h) - c_3(E,h) $, thus providing a new evidence towards a conjecture by Griffiths about the positivity of the Schur polynomials in the Chern forms of Griffiths semipositive vector bundles. As a consequence, we establish a new chain of inequalities between Chern forms. Moreover, we point out how to obtain the positivity of the second Chern form $ c_2(E,h) $ in any rank, starting …
In this paper we prove that, for every $r \geq 2$, the moduli space $M^s_X(r;c_1,c_2)$ of rank $r$ stable vector bundles with Chern classes $c_1=rH$ and $c_2=(3r^2-r)/2$ on a nonsingular cubic surface $X \subset \mathbb{P}^3$ contains a nonempty smooth open subset formed by ACM bundles, i.e. vector bundles with no intermediate cohomology. The bundles we consider for this study are extremal for the number of generators of the corresponding module (these are known as Ulrich bundles), so we also prove the existence of indecomposable Ulrich bundles of arbitrarily high rank on $X$.
Let $X$ be a smooth projective variety of dimension $n$, and let $E$ be an ample vector bundle over $X$. We show that any non-zero Schur class of $E$, lying in the cohomology group of bidegree $(n-1, n-1)$, has a representative which is strictly positive in the sense of smooth forms. This conforms the prediction of Griffiths conjecture on the positive polynomials of Chern classes/forms of an ample vector bundle on the form level, and thus strengthens the celebrated positivity results of Fulton-Lazarsfeld for certain degrees.
We study semistable sheaves of rank $2$ with Chern classes $c_1=0$, $c_2=2$ and $c_3=0$ on the Fano 3-fold $V_5$ of Picard number $1$, degree $5$ and index $2$. We show that the moduli space of such sheaves has a component that is isomorphic to $\mathbb{P}^5$ by identifying it with the moduli space of semistable quiver representations. This provides a natural smooth compactification of the moduli space of minimal instantons, as well as Ulrich bundles of rank $2$ on $V_5$.
Following some work of Aluffi-Mihalcea-Schürmann-Su for the CSM classes of Schubert cells and some elaborate computer calculations by R. Rimanyi and L. Mihalcea, I conjecture that the CSM classes of the Richardson cells expressed in the Schubert basis have nonnegative coefficients. This conjecture was principally motivated by a new product $\square$ coming from the Segre classes in the cohomology of flag varieties (such that the associated Gr of this product is the standard cup product) and the conjecture that the structure constants of this new product $\square$ in the standard Schubert basis…
We study semi-stable sheaves of rank $2$ with Chern class $c_1=0$, $c_2=2$ and $c_3=0$ on the Fano 3-folds $V_4$ of Picard number $1$, degree $4$ and index $2$. We show the moduli space of such sheaves is isomorphic to the moduli space of semi-stable rank $2$ even degree vector bundles on a genus $2$ curve. This provides a natural smooth compatification of the moduli space of Ulrich bundles of rank $2$ on $V_4$.
We prove stability of rank two tautological bundles on the Hilbert square of a surface (under a mild positivity condition) and compute their Chern classes.
In this paper we investigate Fano manifolds $X$ whose Chern characters $ch_k(X)$ satisfy some positivity conditions. Our approach is via the study of polarized minimal families of rational curves $(H_x,L_x)$ through a general point $x\in X$. First we translate positivity properties of the Chern characters of $X$ into properties of the pair $(H_x,L_x)$. This allows us to classify polarized minimal families of rational curves associated to Fano manifolds $X$ satisfying $ch_2(X)\geq0$ and $ch_3(X)\geq0$. As a first application, we provide sufficient conditions for these manifolds to be covered by…
Let $E$ be a holomorphic vector bundle on a projective manifold $X$ such that $\det E$ is ample. We introduce three functionals $Φ_P$ related to Griffiths, Nakano and dual Nakano positivity respectively. They can be used to define new concepts of volume for the vector bundle $E$, by means of generalized Monge-Ampère integrals of $Φ_P(Θ_{E,h})$, where $Θ_{E,h}$ is the Chern curvature tensor of $(E,h)$. These volumes are shown to satisfy optimal Chern class inequalities. We also prove that the functionals $Φ_P$ give rise in a natural way to elliptic differential systems of Hermitian-Yang-Mills t…
We discuss a method for calculating the Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson (CSM) class of a Schubert variety in the Grassmannian using small resolutions introduced by Zelevinsky. As a consequence, we show how to compute the Chern-Mather class and local Euler obstructions using small resolutions instead of the Nash blowup. The algorithm obtained for CSM classes also allows us to prove new cases of a positivity conjecture of Aluffi and Mihalcea.
The Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson class (CSM) and the Segre-Schwartz-MacPherson class (SSM) are deformations of the fundamental class of an algebraic variety. They encode finer enumerative invariants of the variety than its fundamental class. In this paper we offer three contributions to the theory of equivariant CSM/SSM classes. First, we prove an interpolation characterization for CSM classes of certain representations. This method---inspired by recent works of Maulik-Okounkov and Gorbounov-Rimanyi-Tarasov-Varchenko---does not require a resolution of singularities and often produces explicit (no…
We discuss a relationship between Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson classes for Schubert cells in flag manifolds, Fomin-Kirillov algebra, and the generalized nil-Hecke algebra. We show that nonnegativity conjecture in Fomin-Kirillov algebra implies the nonnegativity of the Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson classes for Schubert cells in flag manifolds for type A. Motivated by this connection, we also prove that the (equivariant) Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson classes for Schubert cells in flag manifolds are certain summations of the structure constants of the equivariant cohomology of the Bott-Samelson varieties. W…
We show that the characteristic polynomial of a hyperplane arrangement can be recovered from the class in the Grothendieck group of varieties of the complement of the arrangement. This gives a quick proof of a theorem of Orlik and Solomon relating the characteristic polynomial with the ranks of the cohomology of the complement of the arrangement. We also show that the characteristic polynomial can be computed from the total Chern class of the complement of the arrangement; this has also been observed by Huh. In the case of free arrangements, we prove that this Chern class agrees with the Chern…
We introduce a vector bundle version of the complex Monge-Ampere equation motivated by a desire to study stability conditions involving higher Chern forms. We then restrict ourselves to complex surfaces, provide a moment map interpretation of it, and define a positivity condition (MA positivity) which is necessary for the infinite-dimensional symplectic form to be Kahler. On rank-2 bundles on compact complex surfaces, we prove two consequences of the existence of a "positively curved" solution to this equation - Stability (involving the second Chern character) and a Kobayashi-Lubke-Bogomolov-M…
It is well known that positivity properties of the curvature of a vector bundle have implications on the algebro-geometric properties of the bundle, such as numerical positivity, vanishing of higher cohomology leading to existence of global sections etc. It is also well known that bundles arising in Hodge theory tend to have positivity properties. From these considerations several issues arise: (i) In general for bundles that are semi-positive but not strictly positive; what further natural conditions lead to the existence of sections of its symmetric powers? (ii) In Hodge theory the Hodge met…
We introduce a notion of admissible Hermitian metrics on parabolic bundles and define positivity properties for the same. We develop Chern-Weil theory for parabolic bundles and prove that our metric notions coincide with the already existing algebro-geometric versions of parabolic Chern classes. We also formulate a Griffiths conjecture in the parabolic setting and prove some results that provide evidence in its favour for certain kinds of parabolic bundles. For these kinds of parabolic structures, we prove that the conjecture holds on Riemann surfaces. We also prove that a Berndtsson-type resu…
Let $X$ be a complex manifold, $(E,h)\to X$ be a rank $r$ holomorphic hermitian vector bundle, and $ρ$ be a sequence of dimensions $0 = ρ_0 < ρ_1 < \cdots < ρ_m = r$. Let $Q_{ρ,j}$, $j=1,\dots,m$, be the tautological line bundles over the (possibly incomplete) flag bundle $\mathbb{F}_ρ(E) \to X$ associated to $ρ$, endowed with the natural metrics induced by that of $E$, with Chern curvatures $Ξ_{ρ,j}$. We show that the universal Gysin formula \textsl{à la} Darondeau--Pragacz for the push-forward of a homogeneous polynomial in the Chern classes of the $Q_{ρ,j}$'s also hold pointwise at the leve…
Let $X$ be a compact complex, not necessarily Kähler, manifold of dimension $n$. We characterise the volume of any holomorphic line bundle $L\to X$ as the supremum of the Monge-Ampère masses $\int_X T_{ac}^n$ over all closed positive currents $T$ in the first Chern class of $L$, where $T_{ac}$ is the absolutely continuous part in the Lebesgue decomposition. This result, new in the non-Kähler context, can be seen as holomorphic Morse inequalities for the cohomology of high tensor powers of line bundles endowed with arbitrarily singular Hermitian metrics. It gives, in particular, a new bigness c…
