In this paper, we provide some solvability conditions in terms of ranks for the existence of a general solution to a system of $k$ Sylvester-type quaternion matrix equations with $3k+1$ variables $A_{i}X_{i}+Y_{i}B_{i}+C_{i}Z_{i}D_{i}+F_{i}Z_{i+1}G_{i}=E_{i},~i=\overline{1,k}$. As applications of this system, we present rank equalities as the necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of a general solution to some systems of quaternion matrix equations $A_{i}X_{i}+(A_{i}X_{i})_ϕ+C_{i}Z_{i}(C_{i})_ϕ+F_{i}Z_{i+1}(F_{i})_ϕ=E_{i},~i=\overline{1,k}$.
We derive the solvability conditions and a formula of a general solution to a Sylvester-type matrix equation over Hamilton quaternions. As an application, we investigate the necessary and sufficient conditions for the solvability of the quaternion matrix equation, which involves $η$-Hermicity. We also provide an algorithm with a numerical example to illustrate the main results of this paper.
The Sylvester equation $AX-XB=C$ is considered in the setting of quaternion matrices. Conditions that are necessary and sufficient for the existence of a unique solution are well-known. We study the complementary case where the equation either has infinitely many solutions or does not have solutions at all. Special attention is given to the case where $A$ and $B$ are respectively, lower and upper triangular two-diagonal matrices (in particular, if $A$ and $B$ are Jordan blocks)
Sylvester-type matrix equations have applications in areas including control theory, neural networks, and image processing. In this paper, we establish the necessary and sufficient conditions for the system of Sylvester-type quaternion matrix equations to be consistent and derive an expression of its general solution (when it is solvable). As an application, we investigate the necessary and sufficient conditions for quaternion matrix equations to be consistent and derive a formula for its general solution involving $η$-Hermicity. As a special case, we also present the necessary and sufficient …
In this paper, we derive some necessary and sufficient solvability conditions for some systems of one sided coupled Sylvester-type real quaternion matrix equations in terms of ranks and generalized inverses of matrices. We also give the expressions of the general solutions to these systems when they are solvable. Moreover, we provide some numerical examples to illustrate our results. The findings of this paper extend some known results in the literature.
Within the framework of the theory of quaternion column-row determinants and using determinantal representations of the Moore-Penrose inverse previously obtained by the author, we get explicit determinantal representation formulas of solutions (analogs of Cramer's rule) to the quaternion two-sided generalized Sylvester matrix equation $ {\bf A}_{1}{\bf X}_{1}{\bf B}_{1}+ {\bf A}_{2}{\bf X}_{2}{\bf B}_{2}={\bf C}$ and its all special cases when its first term or both terms are one-sided. Finally, we derive determinantal representations of two like-Lyapunov equations.

In this paper, we investigate and discuss in detail the structures of quaternion tensor SVD, quaternion tensor rank decomposition, and $η$-Hermitian quaternion tensor decomposition with the isomorphic group structures and Einstein product. Then we give the expression of the Moore-Penrose inverse of a quaternion tensor by using the quaternion tensor SVD. Moreover, we consider a generalized Sylvester quaternion tensor equation. We give some necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of a solution to the generalized Sylvester quaternion tensor equation in terms of the Moore-Penrose inv…
In this paper, we prove a conjecture which was presented in a recent paper [Linear Algebra Appl. 2016; 496: 549--593]. We derive some practical necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of a solution to a system of coupled two-sided Sylvester-type quaternion matrix equations with arbitrary equations and arbitrary unknowns $A_{i}X_{i}B_{i}+C_{i}X_{i+1}D_{i}=E_{i},~i=\overline{1,k}$. As an application, we give some practical necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of an $η$-Hermitian solution to the system of quaternion matrix equations $A_{i}X_{i}A^{η*}_{i}+C_{i}X_{i+1…
Given a ring $R$, the notion of Sylvester rank function was conceived within the context of Cohn's classification theory of epic division $R$-rings. In this paper we study and describe the space of Sylvester rank functions on certain families of rings, including Dedekind domains, simple left noetherian rings and skew Laurent polynomial rings $\mathcal{D}[t^{\pm 1};τ]$ for any division ring $\mathcal{D}$ and any automorphism $τ$ of $\mathcal{D}$.
A linear quaternionic equation in one quaternionic variable q is of the form $a_1 q b_1+a_2 q b_2+ ... +a_m q b_m = c$, where the $a_i, b_j, c$ are given quaternionic coefficients. If introducing basis elements $\bf i, j, k$ of pure quaternions, then the quaternionic equation becomes four linear equations in four unknowns over the reals, and solving such equations is trivial. On the other hand, finding a quaternionic rational function expression of the solution that involves only the input quaternionic coefficients and their conjugates, called a basis-free solution, is non-trivial. In 1884, Sy…
Given polynomials a(z) of degree m and b(z) of degree n, we represent the inverse to the Sylvester resultant matrix of a(z) and b(z), if this inverse exists, as a canonical sum of m+n dyadic matrices each of which is a rational function of zeros of a(z) and b(z). As a result, we obtain the polynomial solutions X(z) of degree n-1 and Y(z) of degree m-1 to the equation a(z)X(z)+b(z)Y(z)=c(z), where c(z) is a given polynomial of degree m+n-1, as follows: X(z) is a Lagrange interpolation polynomial for the function c(z)/a(z) over the set of zeros of b(z) and Y(z) is the one for the function c(z)/b…
We present in this paper some fundamental tools for developing matrix analysis over the complex quaternion algebra. As applications, we consider generalized inverses, eigenvalues and eigenvectors, similarity, determinants of complex quaternion matrices, and so on.
Starting from known results, due to Y. Tian in [Ti; 00], referring to the real matrix representations of the real quaternions, in this paper we will investigate the left and right real matrix representations for the complex quaternions and we give some examples in the special case of the complex Fibonacci quaternions.
Cramer's rules for some left, right and two-sided quaternion matrix equations are obtained within the framework of the theory of the column and row determinants.
In noncommutative and nondivision algebra, left spectrum of matrices are less known and is not easy to handle. Split quaternion algebra is a noncommutative and nondivision algebra. In this paper, by the formulas of solving the equations $ax=b$ and $ax^2+bx+c=0$ over split quaternions, we make an attempt to understand the left spectrum of a split quaternion matrix of order 2.
The poses of $m$ robotics in $n$ time points may be represented by an $m \times n$ dual quaternion matrix. In this paper, we study the spectral theory of dual quaternion matrices. We introduce right and left eigenvalues for square dual quaternion matrices. If a right eigenvalue is a dual number, then it is also a left eigenvalue. In this case, this dual number is called an eigenvalue of that dual quaternion matrix. We show that the right eigenvalues of a dual quaternion Hermitian matrix are dual numbers. Thus, they are eigenvalues. An $n \times n$ dual quaternion Hermitian matrix is shown to h…
We introduce a notion of amenable normal extension S of a unital ring R with a finite approximation system F, encompassing the amenable algebras over a field of Gromov and Elek, the twisted crossed product by an amenable group, and the tensor product with a field extension. It is shown that every Sylvester matrix rank function rk of R preserved by S has a canonical extension to a Sylvester matrix rank function rk_F for S. In the case of twisted crossed product by an amenable group, and the tensor product with a field extension, it is also shown that rk_F depends on rk continuously. When an ame…
In this article we give various formulates for compute the number of all coninvolutions over the group of upper triangular matrix with entries into the ring of Gaussian integers module $p$ and the ring of Quaternions integers module $p$, with $p$ an odd prime number.
Weighted singular value decomposition (WSVD) of a quaternion matrix and with its help determinantal representations of the quaternion weighted Moore-Penrose inverse have been derived recently by the author. In this paper, using these determinantal representations, explicit determinantal representation formulas for the solution of the restricted quaternion matrix equations, ${\bf A}{\bf X}{\bf B}={\bf D}$, and consequently, ${\bf A}{\bf X}={\bf D}$ and ${\bf X}{\bf B}={\bf D}$ are obtained within the framework of the theory of column-row determinants. We consider all possible cases depending on…
Within the framework of the theory of the column and row determinants, we obtain determinantal representations of the Drazin inverse for Hermitian matrix over the quaternion skew field. Using the obtained determinantal representations of the Drazin inverse we get explicit representation formulas (analogs of Cramer's rule) for the Drazin inverse solutions of quaternion matrix equations $ {\bf A}{\bf X} = {\bf D}$, $ {\bf X}{\bf B} = {\bf D} $ and ${\bf A} {\bf X} {\bf B} = {\bf D} $, where $ {\bf A}$, ${\bf B}$ are Hermitian.
The product of a complex skew-symmetric matrix and its conjugate transpose is a positive semi-definite Hermitian matrix with nonnegative eigenvalues, with a property that each distinct positive eigenvalue has even multiplicity. This property plays a key role for Professor Loo-Keng Hua to establish the unitary equivalence theorem for complex skew-symmetric matrices. We show that this property is no longer true for quaternion skew-symmetric matrices. This poses a difficulty for finding the canonical form of a quaternion skew-symmetric matrix under unitary equivalence, which may be crucial for th…
In this paper, we construct a simultaneous decomposition of five real quaternion matrices in which three of them have the same column numbers, meanwhile three of them have the same row numbers. Using the simultaneous matrix decomposition, we derive the maximal and minimal ranks of some real quaternion matrices expressions. We also show how to choose the variable real quaternion matrices such that the real quaternion matrix expressions achieve their maximal and minimal ranks. As an application, we give a solvability condition and the general solution to the real quaternion matrix equation $BXD+…
We introduce the notion of a confluent Vandermonde matrix with quaternion entries and discuss its connection with Lagrange-Hermite interpolation over quaternions. Further results include the formula for the rank of a confluent Vandermonde matrix, the representation formula for divided differences of quaternion polynomials and their extensions to the formal power series setting.
Within the framework of the theory of the column and row determinants, we obtain explicit representation formulas (analogs of Cramer's rule) for the minimum norm least squares solutions of quaternion matrix equations ${\bf A} {\bf X} = {\bf B}$, $ {\bf X} {\bf A} = {\bf B}$ and ${\bf A} {\bf X} {\bf B} = {\bf D} $.
By using determinantal representations of the W-weighted Drazin inverse previously obtained by the author within the framework of the theory of the column-row determinants, we get explicit formulas for determinantal representations of the W-weighted Drazin inverse solutions (analogs of Cramer's rule) of the quaternion matrix equations $ {\bf W}{\bf A}{\bf W}{\bf X}={\bf D}$, $ {\bf X}{\bf W}{\bf A}{\bf W}={\bf D} $, and ${\bf W}_{1}{\bf A}{\bf W}_{1}{\bf X}{\bf W}_{2}{\bf B}{\bf W}_{2}={\bf D} $.
Let $\mathbb{H}$ be the real quaternion algebra and $\mathbb{H}^{m\times n}$ denote the set of all $m\times n$ matrices over $\mathbb{H}$. Let $\mathbf{i},\mathbf{j},\mathbf{k}$ be the imaginary quaternion units. For $η\in\{\mathbf{i},\mathbf{j},\mathbf{k}\}$, a square real quaternion matrix $A$ is said to be $η$-Hermitian if $A^{η*}=A$ where $A^{η*}=-ηA^{\ast}η$, and $A^{\ast}$ stands for the conjugate transpose of $A$. In this paper, we construct a simultaneous decomposition of four real quaternion matrices with the same row number $(A,B,C,D),$ where $A=A^{η*}\in \mathbb{H}^{m\times m}, B\in…
A Lyapunov matrix equation can be converted, by using the Jordan decomposition theorem for matrices, into an equivalent Lyapunov matrix equation where the matrix is a Jordan matrix. The Lyapunov matrix equation with Jordan matrix can be reduced to a system of Sylvester-Lyapunov type matrix equations. We completely solve the Sylvester-Lyapunov type matrix equations corresponding to the Jordan block matrices of the initial matrix.
L.Huang [Linear Algebra Appl. 331 (2001) 21-30] gave a canonical form of a quaternion matrix $A$ with respect to consimilarity transformations $\tilde{S}^{-1}AS$ in which $S$ is a nonsingular quaternion matrix and $\tilde{h}:=a-bi+cj-dk$ for each quaternion $h=a+bi+cj+dk$. We give an analogous canonical form of a quaternion matrix with respect to consimilarity transformations $\hat{S}^{-1}AS$ in which $h\mapsto\hat{h}$ is an arbitrary involutive automorphism of the skew field of quaternions. We apply the obtained canonical form to the quaternion matrix equations $AX-\hat{X}B=C$ and $X-A\hat{X}…
Some comments are made on the matrices which serve as the basis of a quaternionic algebra. We show that these matrices are related with the quaternionic action of the imaginary units from the left and from the right.
With the great success of the T-product based real tensor methods in the color image and gray video processing, the establishment of T-product based quaternion tensor methods in the color video processing has encountered a challenge, which is the block diagonalization of block circulant quaternion matrices. In this paper, we show that the discrete Fourier matrix $\mathbf{F_p}$ cannot diagonalize $p\times p$ circulant quaternion matrices, nor can the unitary quaternion matrices $\mathbf{F_p}\mathbf{j}$ and $\mathbf{F_p}(1+\mathbf{j})/\sqrt{2}$ with $\mathbf{j}$ being an imaginary unit of quater…
New definitions of determinant functionals over the quaternion skew field are given in this paper. The inverse matrix over the quaternion skew field is represented by analogues of the classical adjoint matrix. Cramer rule for right and left quaternionic systems of linear equations have been obtained.
The matrix equation $AX-XB=C$ has a solution if and only if the matrices [A&C\\0&B] and [A &0\\0 & B] are similar. This criterion was proved over a field by W.E. Roth (1952) and over the skew field of quaternions by Huang Liping (1996). H.K. Wimmer (1988) obtained an analogous criterion for the matrix equation $X-AXB=C$ over a field. We extend these criteria to the matrix equations $AX-\widehat XB=C$ and $X-A\widehat XB=C$ over the skew field of quaternions with a fixed involutive automorphism $q\mapsto \hat q$.
Weighted singular value decomposition (WSVD) and a representation of the weighted Moore-Penrose inverse of a quaternion matrix by WSVD have been derived. Using this representation, limit and determinantal representations of the weighted Moore-Penrose inverse of a quaternion matrix have been obtained within the framework of the theory of the noncommutative column-row determinants. By using the obtained analogs of the adjoint matrix, we get the Cramer rules for the weighted Moore-Penrose solutions of left and right systems of quaternion linear equations.
In this study, we introduce the concept of commutative quaternions and commutative quaternion matrices. Firstly, we give some properties of commutative quaternions and their Hamilton matrices. After that we investigate commutative quaternion matrices using properties of complex matrices. Then we define the complex adjoint matrix of commutative quaternion matrices and give some of their properties.
Peter Denton, Stephen Parke, Terence Tao and Xining Zhang [arxiv 2019] presented a basic and important identity in linear commutative algebra, so-called {\bf the eigenvector-eigenvalue identity} (formally named in [BAMS, 2021]), which is a convenient and powerful tool to succinctly determine eigenvectors from eigenvalues. The identity relates the eigenvector component to the eigenvalues of $A$ and the minor $M_j$, which is formulated in an elegant form as \[ \lvert v_{i,j} \rvert^2\prod_{k=1;k\ne i}^{n-1}({λ_i}(A)-{λ_k}(A))=\prod_{k=1}^{n-1}({λ_i}(A)-{λ_k}(M_j)). \,\,\,%\mbox{(\cite{tao-eig,D-…
