In this paper, Ostrowski and Brauer type theorems are derived for the left and right eigenvalues of a quaternionic matrix. Generalizations of Gerschgorin type theorems are discussed for the left and the right eigenvalues of a quaternionic matrix. Thereafter a sufficient condition for the stability of a quaternionic matrix is given that generalizes the stability condition for a complex matrix. Finally, a characterization of bounds for the zeros of quaternionic polynomials is presented.
In this paper we provide some applications of the norm form in some quaternion division algebras over rational field and we give some properties of Fibonacci sequence and Fibonacci sequence in connection with quaternion elements. We define a monoid structure over a fnite set on which we will prove that the defined Fibonacci sequence is stationary, we provide some properties of the norm of a rational quaternion algebra, in connection to the famous Lagrange's four-square theorem and its generalizations given by Ramanujan. Moreover, we prove some results regarding the arithmetic of integer quater…
In this paper we find a Clifford algebra associated to generalized Fibonacci quaternions. In this way, we provide a nice algorithm to obtain a division quaternion algebra starting from a quaternion non-division algebra and vice-versa.
We study in detail the zero set of a regular function of a quaternionic or octonionic variable. By means of a division lemma for convergent power series, we find the exact relation existing between the zeros of two octonionic regular functions and those of their product. In the case of octonionic polynomials, we get a strong form of the fundamental theorem of algebra. We prove that the sum of the multiplicities of zeros equals the degree of the polynomial and obtain a factorization in linear polynomials.
To what extent does the maximal subfield spectrum of a division algebra determine the isomorphism class of that algebra? It has been shown that over some fields a quaternion division algebra's isomorphism class is largely if not entirely determined by its maximal subfield spectrum. However in this paper, we show that there are fields for which the maximal subfield spectrum says little to nothing about a quaternion division algebra's isomorphism class. We give an explicit construction of a division algebra with infinite genus. Along the way we introduce the notion of a "linking field extension,…
Exactly 170 years ago, the construction of the real quaternion algebra by William Hamilton was announced in the Proceedings of the Royal Irish Academy. It became the first example of non-commutative division rings and a major turning point of algebra. To this day, the multiplicative group structure of quaternion algebras have not completely been understood. This article is a long survey of the recent developments on the multiplicative group structure of division rings.
Quaternions often appear in wide areas of applied science and engineering such as wireless communications systems, mechanics, etc. It is known that are two types of non-isomorphic generalized quaternion algebras, namely: the algebra of quaternions and the algebra of coquaternions. In this paper, we present the formulae to pass from a basis in the generalized quaternion algebras to a basis in the division quaternions algebra or to a basis in the coquaternions algebra and vice versa. The same result was obtained for the generalized octonion algebra. Moreover, we emphasize the applications of the…
We prove a Nullstellensatz for the ring of polynomial functions in n non-commuting variables over Hamilton's ring of real quaternions. We also characterize the generalized polynomial identities in n variables which hold over the quaternions, and more generally, over any division algebra.
The u-invariant of a field is the supremum of the dimensions of anisotropic quadratic forms over the field. We define corresponding u-invariants for hermitian and generalised quadratic forms over a division algebra with involution in characteristic 2 and investigate the relationships between them. We also investigate these invariants in the case of a quaternion algebra and in particular when this quaternion algebra is the unique quaternion division algebra over a field.
We investigate the finite subgroups that occur in the Hamiltonian quaternion algebra over the real subfield of cyclotomic fields. When possible, we investigate their distribution among the maximal orders.
We study the behavior of square-central elements and Artin-Schreier elements in division algebras of exponent 2 and degree a power of 2. We provide chain lemmas for such elements in division algebras over 2-fields $F$ of cohomological $2$-dimension $\operatorname{cd}_2(F) \leq 2$, and deduce a common slot lemma for tensor products of quaternion algebras over such fields. We also extend to characteristic 2 a theorem proven by Merkurjev for characteristic not 2 on the decomposition of any central simple algebra of exponent 2 and degree a power of 2 over a field $F$ with $\operatorname{cd}_2(F) \…
The genus $gen(D)$ of a finite-dimensional central division algebra $D$ over a field $F$ is defined as the collection of classes $[D']\in Br(F)$, where $D'$ is a central division $F$-algebra having the same maximal subfields as $D$. We show that the fact that quaternion division algebras $D$ and $D'$ have the same maximal subfields does not imply that the matrix algebras $M_l(D)$ and $M_l(D')$ have the same maximal subfields for $l>1$. Moreover, for any odd $n>1$, we construct a field $L$ such that there are two quaternion division $L$-algebras $D$ and $D'$ and a central division $L$-algebra $…
Let $R$ be a ring with ${\bf 1}$ which is not commutative. Assume that a non-zero commutator in $R$ is not a zero divisor. Assume further that either $R$ is alternative, but not associative, or $R$ is associative and any commutator $v\in R$ satisfies: $v^2$ is in the center of $R.$ We prove that $R$ has no zero divisors. Furthermore, if $\text{char}(R)\ne 2,$ then the localization of $R$ at its center is an octonion division algebra, if $R$ is alternative and a quaternion division algebra, if $R$ is associative. Our proof in both cases is essentially the same and it is elementary and rather se…
We generalize Albert's twisted field construction, applying it to unital division algebras with a multiplicative norm. We give conditions for the resulting algebras to be division algebras.Four- and eight-dimensional real unital and non-unital division algebras with large derivation algebras are constructed out of Hamilton's quaternion and Cayley's octonion algebra.
We discuss existence of factorizations with linear factors for (left) polynomials over certain associative real involutive algebras, most notably over Clifford algebras. Because of their relevance to kinematics and mechanism science, we put particular emphasis on factorization results for quaternion, dual quaternion and split quaternion polynomials. A general algorithm ensures existence of a factorization for generic polynomials over division rings but we also consider factorizations for non-division rings. We explain the current state of the art, present some new results and provide examples …
Let $R$ be an associative ring with ${\bf 1}$ which is not commutative. Assume that any non-zero commutator $v\in R$ satisfies: $v^2$ is in the center of $R$ and $v$ is not a zero-divisor. (Note that our assumptions do not include finite dimensionality.) We prove that $R$ has no zero divisors, and that if ${\rm char(R)}\ne 2,$ then the localization of $R$ at its center is a quaternion division algebra.
G. Prasad and A. Rapinchuk asked if two quaternion division F -algebras that have the same subfields are necessarily isomorphic. The answer is known to be "no" for some very large fields. We prove that the answer is "yes" if F is an extension of a global field K so that F /K is unirational and has zero unramified Brauer group. We also prove a similar result for Pfister forms and give an application to tractable fields.
In this paper, we give the complete structures of the equivalence canonical form of four matrices over an arbitrary division ring. As applications, we derive some practical necessary and sufficient conditions for the solvability to some systems of generalized Sylvester matrix equations using the ranks of their coefficient matrices. The results of this paper are new and available over the real number field, the complex number field, and the quaternion algebra.
Frobenius' Theorem states that the algebra of quaternions $\mathbb H$ is, besides the fields of real and complex numbers, the only finite-dimensional real division algebra. We first give a short elementary proof of this theorem, then characterize finite-dimensional real algebras that contain either a copy of $\mathbb C$, a copy of $\mathbb H$, or a pair of anticommuting invertible elements through the dimensions of their (left) ideals, and finally consider the problem of lifting algebraic elements modulo ideals.
We give examples of quaternion and octonion division algebras over a field $F$ of characteristic $2$ that split over a purely inseparable extension $E$ of $F$ of degree $\geq 4$ but that do not split over any subextension of $F$ inside $E$ of lower exponent, or, in the case of octonions, over any simple subextension of $F$ inside $E$. Thus, we get a negative answer to a question posed by Bernhard Mühlherr and Richard Weiss. We study this question in terms of the isotropy behaviour of the associated norm forms.
Peter Denton, Stephen Parke, Terence Tao and Xining Zhang [arxiv 2019] presented a basic and important identity in linear commutative algebra, so-called {\bf the eigenvector-eigenvalue identity} (formally named in [BAMS, 2021]), which is a convenient and powerful tool to succinctly determine eigenvectors from eigenvalues. The identity relates the eigenvector component to the eigenvalues of $A$ and the minor $M_j$, which is formulated in an elegant form as \[ \lvert v_{i,j} \rvert^2\prod_{k=1;k\ne i}^{n-1}({λ_i}(A)-{λ_k}(A))=\prod_{k=1}^{n-1}({λ_i}(A)-{λ_k}(M_j)). \,\,\,%\mbox{(\cite{tao-eig,D-…
As is well-known, the real quaternion division algebra $ {\cal H}$ is algebraically isomorphic to a 4-by-4 real matrix algebra. But the real division octonion algebra ${\cal O}$ can not be algebraically isomorphic to any matrix algebras over the real number field ${\cal R}$, because ${\cal O}$ is a non-associative algebra over ${\cal R}$. However since ${\cal O}$ is an extension of ${\cal H}$ by the Cayley-Dickson process and is also finite-dimensional, some pseudo real matrix representations of octonions can still be introduced through real matrix representations of quaternions. In this paper…
We study not necessarily associative (NNA) division algebras over the reals. We classify in this paper series those that admit a grading over a finite group $G$, and have a basis $\{v_g|g\in G\}$ as a real vector space, and the product of these basis elements respects the grading and includes a scalar structure constant with values only in $\{1,-1\}$. We classify here those graded by an abelian group $G$ of order $|G|\leq 8$ with $G$ non--isomorphic to $\z/8\z$. We will find the complex, quaternion, and octonion algebras, but also a remarkable set of novel non--associative division algebras.
We propose polynomial-time algorithms for finding nontrivial zeros of quadratic forms with four variables over rational function fields of characteristic 2. We apply these results to find prescribed quadratic subfields of quaternion division division algebras and zero divisors in $M_2(D)$, the full matrix algebra over a division algebra, given by structure constants. We also provide an implementation of our results in MAGMA which shows that the algorithms are truly practical.
Given a central division algebra $D$ of degree $d$ over a field $F$, we associate to any standard polynomial $ϕ(z)=z^n+c_{n-1} z^{n-1}+\dots+c_0$ over $D$ a "companion polynomial" $Φ(z)$ of degree $n d$ with coefficients in $F$ whose roots are exactly the conjugacy classes of the roots of $ϕ(z)$. We explain how in case $D$ is a quaternion algebra, all the roots of $ϕ(z)$ can be recovered from the roots of $Φ(z)$. On the way, we also generalize certain theorems that were known for $\mathbb{H}$ to any division algebra, such as the connection between the right eigenvalues of a matrix and the root…
Supersymmetry is deeply related to division algebras. Nonabelian Yang-Mills fields minimally coupled to massless spinors are supersymmetric if and only if the dimension of spacetime is 3, 4, 6 or 10. The same is true for the Green-Schwarz superstring. In both cases, supersymmetry relies on the vanishing of a certain trilinear expression involving a spinor field. The reason for this, in turn, is the existence of normed division algebras in dimensions 1, 2, 4 and 8: the real numbers, complex numbers, quaternions and octonions. Here we provide a self-contained account of how this works.
We study central simple algebras with involution of the first kind that become hyperbolic over the function field of the conic associated to a given quaternion algebra $Q$. We classify these algebras in degree~4 and give an example of such a division algebra with orthogonal involution of degree~8 that does not contain $Q$ with its canonical involution, even though it contains $Q$ and is totally decomposable into a tensor product of quaternion algebras with involution.
New families of eight-dimensional real division algebras with large derivation algebra are presented: We generalize the classical Cayley-Dickson doubling process starting with a unital algebra with involution over a field F by allowing the scalar in the doubling to be an invertible element in the algebra. The resulting unital algebras are neither power-associative nor quadratic. Starting with a quaternion division algebra D, we obtain division algebras A for all invertible scalars chosen in D outside of F. This is independent on where the scalar is placed inside the product and three pairwise …
Starting from the four normed division algebras - the real numbers, complex numbers, quaternions and octonions - a systematic procedure gives a 3-cocycle on the Poincare Lie superalgebra in dimensions 3, 4, 6 and 10. A related procedure gives a 4-cocycle on the Poincare Lie superalgebra in dimensions 4, 5, 7 and 11. In general, an (n+1)-cocycle on a Lie superalgebra yields a "Lie n-superalgebra": that is, roughly speaking, an n-term chain complex equipped with a bracket satisfying the axioms of a Lie superalgebra up to chain homotopy. We thus obtain Lie 2-superalgebras extending the Poincare s…
Quadratic descent of hermitian and skew hermitian forms over division algebras with involution of the first kind in arbitrary characteristic is investigated and a criterion, in terms of systems of quadratic forms, is obtained. A refined result is also obtained for hermitian (resp. skew hermitian) forms over a quaternion algebra with symplectic (resp. orthogonal) involution.
Given a field $F$, an étale extension $L/F$ and an Azumaya algebra $A/L$, one knows that there are extensions $E/F$ such that $A \otimes_F E$ is a split algebra over $L \otimes_F E$. In this paper we bound the degree of a minimal splitting field of this type from above and show that our bound is sharp in certain situations, even in the case where $L/F$ is a split extension. This gives in particular a number of generalizations of the classical fact that when the tensor product of two quaternion algebras is not a division algebra, the two quaternion algebras must share a common quadratic splitti…
We give an algorithm to determine finitely many generators for a subgroup of finite index in the unit group of an integral group ring $\mathbb{Z} G$ of a finite nilpotent group $G$, this provided the rational group algebra $\mathbb{Q} G$ does not have simple components that are division classical quaternion algebras or two-by-two matrices over a classical quaternion algebra with centre $\mathbb{Q}$. The main difficulty is to deal with orders in quaternion algebras over the rationals or a quadratic imaginary extension of the rationals. In order to deal with these we give a finite and easy imple…
Multiple-input double-output (MIDO) codes are important in the near-future wireless communications, where the portable end-user device is physically small and will typically contain at most two receive antennas. Especially tempting is the 4 x 2 channel due to its immediate applicability in the digital video broadcasting (DVB). Such channels optimally employ rate-two space-time (ST) codes consisting of (4 x 4) matrices. Unfortunately, such codes are in general very complex to decode, hence setting forth a call for constructions with reduced complexity. Recently, some reduced complexity construc…
