As is well-known, the real quaternion division algebra $ {\cal H}$ is algebraically isomorphic to a 4-by-4 real matrix algebra. But the real division octonion algebra ${\cal O}$ can not be algebraically isomorphic to any matrix algebras over the real number field ${\cal R}$, because ${\cal O}$ is a non-associative algebra over ${\cal R}$. However since ${\cal O}$ is an extension of ${\cal H}$ by the Cayley-Dickson process and is also finite-dimensional, some pseudo real matrix representations of octonions can still be introduced through real matrix representations of quaternions. In this paper we give a complete investigation to real matrix representations of octonions, and consider their various applications to octonions as well as matrices of octonions.
It is well-known that the exceptional Lie algebras $\mathfrak{f}_4$ and $\mathfrak{g}_2$ arise from the octonions as the derivation algebras of the $3\times3$ hermitian and $1\times1$ antihermitian matrices, respectively. Inspired by this, we compute the derivation algebras of the spaces of hermitian and antihermitian matrices over an octonion algebra in all dimensions.

We previously showed that the real eigenvalues of 3x3 octonionic Hermitian matrices form two separate families, each containing 3 eigenvalues, and each leading to an orthonormal decomposition of the identity matrix, which would normally correspond to an orthonormal basis. We show here that it nevertheless takes both families in order to decompose an arbitrary vector into components, each of which is an eigenvector of the original matrix; each vector therefore has 6 components, rather than 3.
Given a grading $Γ: A=\oplus_{g\in G}A_g$ on a nonassociative algebra $A$ by an abelian group $G$, we have two subgroups of the group of automorphisms of $A$: the automorphisms that stabilize each homogeneous component $A_g$ (as a subspace) and the automorphisms that permute the components. By the Weyl group of $Γ$ we mean the quotient of the latter subgroup by the former. In the case of a Cartan decomposition of a semisimple complex Lie algebra, this is the automorphism group of the root system, i.e., the so-called extended Weyl group. A grading is called fine if it cannot be refined. We comp…
In this paper we present a complete method for finding the roots of all polynomials of the form $ϕ(z)=c_n z^n+c_{n-1} z^{n-1}+\dots+c_1 z+c_0$ over a given octonion division algebra. When $ϕ(z)$ is monic we also consider the companion matrix and its left and right eigenvalues and study their relations to the roots of $ϕ(z)$, showing that the right eigenvalues form the conjugacy classes of the roots of $ϕ(z)$ and the left eigenvalues form a larger set than the roots of $ϕ(z)$.
In this paper, we present some applications of quaternions and octonions. We present the real matrix representations for complex octonions and some of their properties which can be used in computations where these elements are involved. Moreover, we give a set of invertible elements in split quaternion algebras and in split octonion algebras.
This paper concerns an associative graded algebra A that is the enveloping algebra of a Lie algebra with exponential growth. The algebra A is 3-Calabi-Yau. There is a Z-form of A so for every field k there is an algebra A_k. An algebraic group of type G_2 acts as degree-preserving automorphisms of A. The algebra A is generated by 7 elements modulo 7 homogeneous quadratic relations. It can be constructed from the octonions; the same construction applied to the quaternions produces the commutative polynomial ring in 3 variables. If V is the 7-dimensional irreducible representation of the complex…
This paper is concerned with the description of exceptional simple Lie algebras as octonionic analogues of the classical matrix Lie algebras. We review the Tits-Freudenthal construction of the magic square, which includes the exceptional Lie algebras as the octonionic case of a construction in terms of a Jordan algebra of hermitian 3x3 matrices (Tits) or various plane and other geometries (Freudenthal). We present alternative constructions of the magic square which explain its symmetry, and show explicitly how the use of split composition algebras leads to analogues of the matrix Lie algebras …
We study generically split octonion algebras over schemes using techniques of ${\mathbb A}^1$-homotopy theory. By combining affine representability results with techniques of obstruction theory, we establish classification results over smooth affine schemes of small dimension. In particular, for smooth affine schemes over algebraically closed fields, we show that generically split octonion algebras may be classified by characteristic classes including the second Chern class and another "mod $3$" invariant. We review Zorn's "vector matrix" construction of octonion algebras, generalized to rings…
We provide sufficient conditions for systems of polynomial equations over general (real or complex) algebras to have a solution. This generalizes known results on quaternions, octonions and matrix algebras. We also generalize the fundamental theorem of algebra for quaternions to polynomials with two monomials in the leading form, while showing that it fails for three.
With the great success of the T-product based real tensor methods in the color image and gray video processing, the establishment of T-product based quaternion tensor methods in the color video processing has encountered a challenge, which is the block diagonalization of block circulant quaternion matrices. In this paper, we show that the discrete Fourier matrix $\mathbf{F_p}$ cannot diagonalize $p\times p$ circulant quaternion matrices, nor can the unitary quaternion matrices $\mathbf{F_p}\mathbf{j}$ and $\mathbf{F_p}(1+\mathbf{j})/\sqrt{2}$ with $\mathbf{j}$ being an imaginary unit of quater…
In this paper we will study some properties of the matrix representations of symbol algebras of degree three, we study some equations with coefficients in these algebras, we find an octonion algebra in a symbol algebra of degree three, we define the Fibonacci symbol elements and we give some properties of them.
Starting from known results, due to Y. Tian in [Ti; 00], referring to the real matrix representations of the real quaternions, in this paper we will investigate the left and right real matrix representations for the complex quaternions and we give some examples in the special case of the complex Fibonacci quaternions.
The Drazin inverse solutions of the matrix equations ${\rm {\bf A}}{\rm {\bf X}} = {\rm {\bf B}}$, ${\rm {\bf X}}{\rm {\bf A}} = {\rm {\bf B}}$ and ${\rm {\bf A}}{\rm {\bf X}}{\rm {\bf B}} ={\rm {\bf D}} $ are considered in this paper. We use both the determinantal representations of the Drazin inverse obtained earlier by the author and in the paper. We get analogs of the Cramer rule for the Drazin inverse solutions of these matrix equations and using their for determinantal representations of solutions of some differential matrix equations, ${\bf X}'+ {\bf A}{\bf X}={\bf B}$ and ${\bf X}'+{\b…
Based on an interpretation of the quark-lepton symmetry in terms of the unimodularity of the color group $SU(3)$ and on the existence of 3 generations, we develop an argumentation suggesting that the "finite quantum space" corresponding to the exceptional real Jordan algebra of dimension 27 (the Euclidean Albert algebra) is relevant for the description of internal spaces in the theory of particles. In particular, the triality which corresponds to the 3 off-diagonal octonionic elements of the exceptional algebra is associated to the 3 generations of the Standard Model while the representation o…
