Given a field $F$, an étale extension $L/F$ and an Azumaya algebra $A/L$, one knows that there are extensions $E/F$ such that $A \otimes_F E$ is a split algebra over $L \otimes_F E$. In this paper we bound the degree of a minimal splitting field of this type from above and show that our bound is sharp in certain situations, even in the case where $L/F$ is a split extension. This gives in particular a number of generalizations of the classical fact that when the tensor product of two quaternion algebras is not a division algebra, the two quaternion algebras must share a common quadratic splitting field.
In another direction, our constructions combined with results of Karpenko also show that for any odd prime number $p$, the generic algebra of index $p^n$, and exponent $p$ cannot be expressed nontrivially as the corestriction of an algebra over any extension field if $n < p^2$.
We define a corestriction map for equivariant Brauer groups in the sense of Fröhlich and Wall, which contain as a special case the Brauer-Clifford groups introduced by Turull. We show that this corestriction map has similar properties as the corestriction map in group cohomology (especially Galois cohomology). In particular, composing corestriction and restriction associated to a subgroup $H\leq G$ amounts to powering with the index $\lvert G:H \rvert$.
We study the decomposition of central simple algebras of exponent 2 into tensor products of quaternion algebras. We consider in particular decompositions in which one of the quaternion algebras contains a given quadratic extension. Let $B$ be a biquaternion algebra over $F(\sqrt{a})$ with trivial corestriction. A degree 3 cohomological invariant is defined and we show that it determines whether $B$ has a descent to $F$. This invariant is used to give examples of indecomposable algebras of degree 8 and exponent 2 over a field of 2-cohomological dimension 3 and over a field $\mathbb M(t)$ where …
Let $L$ be a separable quadratic extension of either $\mathbb{Q}$ or $\mathbb{F}_q(t)$. We propose efficient algorithms for finding isomorphisms between quaternion algebras over $L$. Our techniques are based on computing maximal one-sided ideals of the corestriction of a central simple $L$-algebra.
This paper is concerned with the problem of determining the number of division algebras which share the same collection of finite splitting fields. As a corollary we are able to determine when two central division algebras may be distinguished by their finite splitting fields over certain fields.
In this paper, we will study the Möbius polynomial, an invariant of ranked posets that arises in the study of splitting algebras. We will present a formula for the Möbius polynomial of the direct product of posets in terms of the Möbius polynomials of the factors. We will then use this formula to calculate Hilbert series and graded trace generating functions associated to the splitting algebras of the Boolean algebra and the poset of factors of a natural number n.
Gelfand, Retakh, Serconek and Wilson, in \cite{GRSW}, defined a graded algebra $A_Γ$ attached to any finite ranked poset $Γ$ - a generalization of the universal algebra of pseudo-roots of noncommutative polynomials. This algebra has since come to be known as the splitting algebra of $Γ$. The splitting algebra has a secondary filtration related to the rank function on the poset and the associated graded algebra is denoted here by $A'_Γ$. We calculate the cohomology algebra (and coalgebra) of $A'_Γ$ explicitly. As a corollary to this calculation we have a proof that $A'_Γ$ is Koszul (respectivel…
We study the common splitting fields of symbol algebras of degree $p^m$ over fields $F$ of $\operatorname{char}(F)=p$. We first show that if any finite number of such algebras share a degree $p^m$ simple purely inseparable splitting field, then they share a cyclic splitting field of the same degree. As a consequence, we conclude that every finite number of symbol algebras of degrees $p^{m_0},\dots,p^{m_t}$ share a cyclic splitting field of degree $p^{m_0+\dots+m_t}$. This generalization recovers the known fact that every tensor product of symbol algebras is a symbol algebra. We apply a result …
In this paper we define pre-Malcev algebras and alternative quadri-algebras and prove that they generalize pre-Lie algebras and quadri-algebras respectively to the alternative setting. Constructions in terms bimodules, splitting of operations, and Rota-Baxter operators are discussed.

It is well known that central simple algebras are split by suitable finite Galois extensions of their centers. A counterpart of this result was studied by Juan and Magid in the set up of differential matrix algebras, wherein Picard-Vessiot extensions that split matrix differential algebras were constructed. In this article, we exhibit instances of differential matrix algebras which are split by finite extensions. In some cases, we relate the existence of finite splitting extensions of a differential matrix algebra to the triviality of its tensor powers, and show in these cases, that orders of …
We generalize Amitsur's construction of central simple algebras over a field $F$ which are split by field extensions possessing a derivation with field of constants $F$ to nonassociative algebras: for every central division algebra $D$ over a field $F$ of characteristic zero there exists an infinite-dimensional unital nonassociative algebra whose right nucleus is $D$ and whose left and middle nucleus are a field extension $K$ of $F$ splitting $D$, where $F$ is algebraically closed in $K$. We then give a short direct proof that every $p$-algebra of degree $m$, which has a purely inseparable spl…
The category of all $k$-algebras with a bilinear form, whose objects are all pairs $(R,b)$ where $R$ is a $k$-algebra and $b\colon R\times R\to k$ is a bilinear mapping, is equivalent to the category of unital $k$-algebras $A$ for which the canonical homomorphism $(k,1)\to(A,1_A)$ of unital $k$-algebras is a splitting monomorphism in the category of $k$-modules. Call the left inverses of this splitting monomorphism "weak augmentations" of the algebra. There is a category isomorphism between the category of $k$-algebras with a weak augmentation and the category of unital $k$-algebras $(A,b_A)$ …
A Lie algebra over a field of characteristic 0 splits over its soluble radical and all complements are conjugate. I show that the splitting theorem extends to Leibniz algebras but that the conjugacy theorem does not.
We associate to a good cell decomposition of a manifold M a quadratic algebra and show that the Koszulity of the algebra implies a restriction on the Euler characteristic of M. For a two-dimensional manifold M the algebra is Koszul if and only if the Euler characteristic of M is two.
Hom-dendriform algebras are twisted analog of dendriform algebras and are splitting of hom-associative algebras. In this paper, we define a cohomology and deformation for hom-dendriform algebras. We relate this cohomology with the Hochschild-type cohomology of hom-associative algebras. We also describe similar results for the twisted analog of dendriform coalgebras.
A splitting field of a central simple algebra is said to be absolute Galois if it is Galois over some fixed subfield of the centre of the algebra. The paper provides an existence theorem for such fields over global fields with enough roots of unity. As an application, all twisted function fields and all twisted Laurent series rings over symbol algebras (or p-algebras) over global fields are crossed products. A closely related statement holds for division algebras over Henselian valued fields with global residue field. The existence of absolute Galois splitting fields in central simple algebras…
We study a finite dimensional quadratic graded algebra R defined from a finite ranked poset. This algebra has been central to the study of the splitting algebra of the poset, A, as introduced by Gelfand, Retakh, Serconek and Wilson . The algebra A is known to be quadratic when the poset satisfies a combinatorial condition known as uniform, and R is the quadratic dual of an associated graded algebra of A. We prove that R is Koszul and the poset is uniform if and only if the poset is Cohen-Macaulay. Koszulity of R implies Koszulity of A. We also show that when R is Koszul, the cohomology of the …
Let $\K$ be an algebraic number field of degree $d$ and discriminant $Δ$ over $\Q$. Let $\A$ be an associative algebra over $\K$ given by structure constants such that $\A\cong M_n(\K)$ holds for some positive integer $n$. Suppose that $d$, $n$ and $|Δ|$ are bounded. In a previous paper a polynomial time ff-algorithm was given to construct explicitly an isomorphism $\A \rightarrow M_n(\K)$. Here we simplify and improve this algorithm in the cases $n\leq 43$, $\K=\Q$, and $n=2$, with $\K=\Q(\sqrt{-1})$ or $\K=\Q(\sqrt{-3})$. The improvements are based on work by Y. Kitaoka and R. Coulangeon on …
We propose an algorithm for finding zero divisors in quaternion algebras over quadratic number fields, or equivalently, solving homogeneous quadratic equations in three variables over $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{d})$ where $d$ is a square-free integer. The algorithm is randomized and runs in polynomial time if one is allowed to call oracles for factoring integers.
Let $A$ be a pseudocompact (or profinite) algebra, so $A=C^*$ where $C$ is a coalgebra. We show that the if the semiartinian part (the "Dickson" part) of every $A$-module $M$ splits off in $M$, then $A$ is semiartinian, also giving a positive answer in the case of algebras arising as dual of coalgebras (pseudocompact algebras), to a well known conjecture of Faith.
Let K be an algebraic number field of degree d and discriminant D over Q. Let A be an associative algebra over K given by structure constants such that A is isomorphic to the algebra M_n(K) of n by n matrices over K for some positive integer n. Suppose that d, n and D are bounded. Then an isomorphism of A with M_n(K) can be constructed by a polynomial time ff-algorithm. (An ff-algorithm is a deterministic procedure which is allowed to call oracles for factoring integers and factoring univariate polynomials over finite fields.) As a consequence, we obtain a polynomial time ff-algorithm to compu…
This paper provides a general operadic definition for the notion of splitting the operations of algebraic structures. This construction is proved to be equivalent to some Manin products of operads and it is shown to be closely related to Rota-Baxter operators. Hence, it gives a new effective way to compute Manin black products. The present construction is shown to have symmetry properties. Finally, this allows us to describe the algebraic structure of square matrices with coefficients in algebras of certain types. Many examples illustrate this text, including the case of Jordan algebras.
Maximal abelian subalgebras of one of the classical real inhomogeneous Lie algebras are constructed, namely those of the pseudoeuclidean Lie algebra e(p,q). Use is made of the semidirect sum structure of e(p,q) with the translations T(p+q) as an abelian ideal. We first construct splitting MASAs that are themselves direct sums of abelian subalgebras of o(p,q) and of subalgebras of T(p+q). The splitting subalgebras are used to construct the complementary nonsplitting ones. We present general decomposition theorems and construct indecomposable MASAs for all algebras e(p,q), p \geq q \geq 0. The c…
