We construct effective GKM $T^3$-actions with connected stabilizers on the total spaces of the two $S^2$-bundles over $S^6$ with identical GKM graphs. This shows that the GKM graph of a simply-connected integer GKM manifold with connected stabilizers does not determine its homotopy type. We complement this by a discussion of the minimality of this example: the homotopy type of integer GKM manifolds with connected stabilizers is indeed encoded in the GKM graph for smaller dimensions, lower complexity, or lower number of fixed points. Regarding geometric structures on the new example, we find an almost complex structure which is invariant under the action of a subtorus. In addition to the minimal example, we provide an analogous example where the torus actions are Hamiltonian, which disproves symplectic cohomological rigidity for Hamiltonian integer GKM manifolds.
We formulate the notion of an isomorphism of GKM graphs. We then show that two GKM graphs have isomorphic graph equivariant cohomology algebras if and only if the graphs are isomorphic.
Using the classification of $6$-dimensional manifolds by Wall, Jupp and Žubr, we observe that the diffeomorphism type of simply-connected, compact $6$-dimensional integer GKM $T^2$-manifolds is encoded in their GKM graph. As an application, we show that the $6$-dimensional manifolds on which Tolman and Woodward constructed Hamiltonian, non-Kähler $T^2$-actions with finite fixed point set are both diffeomorphic to Eschenburg's twisted flag manifold $SU(3)//T^2$. In particular, they admit a noninvariant Kähler structure.
We prove for closed, odd-dimensional GKM$_3$ manifolds of non-negative sectional curvature that both the equivariant and the ordinary rational cohomology split off the cohomology of an odd-dimensional sphere.
Let T be a torus of dimension at least k and M a T-manifold. M is a GKM_k-manifold if the action is equivariantly formal, has only isolated fixed points, and any k weights of the isotropy representation in the fixed points are linearly independent. In this paper we compute the cohomology rings with real and integer coefficients of GKM_3- and GKM_4-manifolds which admit invariant metrics of positive sectional curvature.
We consider compact manifolds $M$ with a cohomogeneity one action of a compact Lie group $G$ such that the orbit space $M/G$ is a closed interval. For $T$ a maximal torus of $G$, we find necessary and sufficient conditions on the group diagram of $M$ such that the $T$-action on $M$ is of GKM type, and describe its GKM graph. The general results are illustrated on explicit examples.
We classify fibrations of abstract $3$-regular GKM graphs over $2$-regular ones, and show that all fiberwise signed fibrations of this type are realized as the projectivization of equivariant complex rank $2$ vector bundles over quasitoric $4$-folds or $S^4$. We investigate the existence of invariant (stable) almost complex, symplectic, and Kähler structures on the total space. In this way we obtain infinitely many Kähler manifolds with Hamiltonian non-Kähler actions in dimension $6$ with prescribed one-skeleton, in particular with prescribed number of isolated fixed points.
Let $T$ be a torus and $B$ a compact $T-$manifold. Goresky, Kottwitz, and MacPherson show in \cite{GKM} that if $B$ is (what was subsequently called) a GKM manifold, then there exists a simple combinatorial description of the equivariant cohomology ring $H_T^*(B)$ as a subring of $H_T^*(B^T)$. In this paper we prove an analogue of this result for $T-$equivariant fiber bundles: we show that if $M$ is a $T-$manifold and $π\colon M \to B$ a fiber bundle for which $π$ intertwines the two $T-$actions, there is a simple combinatorial description of $H_T^*(M)$ as a subring of $H_T^*(π^{-1}(B^T))$. Us…
It follows from the GKM description of equivariant cohomology that the GKM graph of a GKM manifold has free equivariant graph cohomology, and satisfies a Poincaré duality condition. We prove that these conditions are sufficient for an abstract $3$-valent $T^2$-GKM graph to be realizable by a simply-connected $6$-dimensional GKM manifold. Our realization has the property that any closed stratum of a finite isotropy group contains a fixed point. Furthermore, we argue that in case there exists a fixed point in whose vicinity there occur at most two distinct finite nontrivial isotropy groups such …
If a closed smooth manifold $M$ with an action of a torus $T$ satisfies certain conditions, then a labeled graph $\mG_M$ with labeling in $H^2(BT)$ is associated with $M$, which encodes a lot of geometrical information on $M$. For instance, the "graph cohomology" ring $\mHT^*(\mG_M)$ of $\mG_M$ is defined to be a subring of $\bigoplus_{v\in V(\mG_M)}H^*(BT)$, where $V(\mG_M)$ is the set of vertices of $\mG_M$, and is known to be often isomorphic to the equivariant cohomology $H^*_T(M)$ of $M$. In this paper, we determine the ring structure of $\mHT^*(\mG_M)$ with $\Z$ (resp. $\Z[1/2]$) coeffic…
In this paper an example of a $k$-independent $(n,k)$-type GKM-graph without nontrivial extensions is constructed for any $n\geq k\geq 3$. It is shown that this example cannot be realized by a GKM-manifold for any $n=k=3$ or $n\geq k\geq 4$.
Suppose a compact torus $T$ acts on a closed smooth manifold $M$. Under certain conditions, Guillemin and Zara associate to $(M, T)$ a labeled graph $\mG_M$ where the labels lie in $H^2(BT)$. They also define the subring $H_T^*(\mG_M)$ of $\bigoplus_{v\in V(\mG_M)}H^*(BT)$, where $V(\mG_M)$ is the set of vertices of $\mG_M$ and we call $H_T^*(\mG_M)$ the "graph cohomology" ring of $\mG_M$. It is known that the equivariant cohomology ring of $M$ can be described by using combinatorial data of the labeled graph. The main result of this paper is to determine the ring structure of equivariant coho…
Let $T$ be a compact torus and $X$ be a a finite $T$-CW complex (e.g. a compact $T$-manifold). In earlier work, the second author introduced a functor which assigns to $X$ a so called GKM-sheaf $\mathcal{F}_X$ whose ring of global sections $H^0(\mathcal{F}_X)$ is isomorphic to the equivariant cohomology $H^*_T(X)$ whenever $X$ is equivariantly formal (meaning that $H^*_T(X)$ is a free module over $H^*(BT))$. In the current paper we prove more generally that $H^0(\mathcal{F}_X) \cong H^*_T(X)$ if and only if $H_T^*(X)$ is reflexive, and find a geometric interpretation of the higher cohomology $…
In this paper we study general torus actions on manifolds with isolated fixed points from combinatorial point of view. The main object of study is the poset of face submanifolds of such actions. We introduce the notion of a locally geometric poset -- the graded poset locally modelled by geometric lattices, and prove that for any torus action, the poset of its faces is locally geometric. Next we discuss the relations between posets of faces and GKM-theory. In particular, we define the face poset of an abstract GKM-graph and show how to reconstruct the face poset of a manifold from its GKM-graph…
Let a torus $T$ act smoothly on a compact smooth manifold $M$. If the rational equivariant cohomology $H^*_T(M)$ is a free $H^*_T(pt)$-module, then according to the Chang-Skjelbred Lemma, it can be determined by the $1$-skeleton consisting of the $T$-fixed points and $1$-dimensional $T$-orbits of $M$. When $M$ is an even-dimensional, orientable manifold with 2-dimensional 1-skeleton, Goresky, Kottwitz and MacPherson gave a graphic description of the equivariant cohomology. In this paper, first we revisit the even-dimensional GKM theory and introduce a notion of GKM covering, then we consider t…
Let $M$ be a symplectic manifold equipped with a Hamiltonian action of a torus $T$. Let $F$ denote the fixed point set of the $T$-action and let $i:F\hookrightarrow M$ denote the inclusion. By a theorem of F. Kirwan \cite{K} the induced map $i^*:H_T^*(M) \to H_T^*(F)$ in equivariant cohomology is an injection. We give a simple proof of a formula of Goresky-Kottwitz-MacPherson \cite{GKM} for the image of the map $i^*$.
Quasitoric manifolds are manifolds that admit an action of the torus that is locally as the standard action of T^n on C^n. It is known that the quotients of such actions are nice manifolds with corners. We prove that such manifolds are equivariantly rigid i.e., that any other manifold that is T^n-homotopy equivalent to a quasitoric manifold, is T^n-homeomorphic to it.
By Hantzsche-Wendt manifold (for short HW-manifold) we understand any oriented closed Riemannian manifold of dimension n with a holonomy group (Z_2)^{n-1}. Two HW-manifolds M_1 and M_2 are cohomological rigid if and only if a homeomorphism between M_1 and M_2 is equivalent to an isomorphism of graded rings H^{*}(M_1,F_2) and H^{*}(M_2,F_2). We prove that HW-manifolds are cohomological rigid.
In this paper it is proven that there is at most one way, up to isotopy, in which a connected, hyperbolic, orientable 3-manifold can fiber over the circle with monodromy in the Torelli group.
For several important classes of manifolds acted on by the torus, the information about the action can be encoded combinatorially by a regular n-valent graph with vector labels on its edges, which we refer to as the torus graph. By analogy with the GKM-graphs, we introduce the notion of equivariant cohomology of a torus graph, and show that it is isomorphic to the face ring of the associated simplicial poset. This extends a series of previous results on the equivariant cohomology of torus manifolds. As a primary combinatorial application, we show that a simplicial poset is Cohen-Macaulay if it…
