We present a coupling of the Finite Element and the Boundary Element Method in an isogeometric framework to approximate either two-dimensional Laplace interface problems or boundary value problems consisting in two disjoint domains. We consider the Finite Element Method in the bounded domains to simulate possibly non-linear materials. The Boundary Element Method is applied in unbounded or thin domains where the material behavior is linear. The isogeometric framework allows to combine different design and analysis tools: first, we consider the same type of NURBS parameterizations for an exact geometry representation and second, we use the numerical analysis for the Galerkin approximation. Moreover, it facilitates to perform h- and p-refinements. For the sake of analysis, we consider the framework of strongly monotone and Lipschitz continuous operators to ensure well-posedness of the coupled system. Furthermore, we provide an a priori error estimate. We additionally show an improved convergence behavior for the errors in functionals of the solution that may double the rate under certain assumptions. Numerical examples conclude the work which illustrate the theoretical results.
We formulate and analyze an adaptive algorithm for isogeometric analysis with hierarchical B-splines for weakly-singular boundary integral equations. We prove that the employed weighted-residual error estimator is reliable and converges at optimal algebraic rate. Numerical experiments with isogeometric boundary elements for the 3D Poisson problem confirm the theoretical results, which also cover general elliptic systems like linear elasticity.
We consider a Johnson-Nédélec FEM-BEM coupling, which is a direct and non-symmetric coupling of finite and boundary element methods, in order to solve interface problems for the magnetostatic Maxwell's equations with the magnetic vector potential ansatz. In the FEM-domain, equations may be non-linear, whereas they are exclusively linear in the BEM-part to guarantee the existence of a fundamental solution. First, the weak problem is formulated in quotient spaces to avoid resolving to a saddle point problem. Second, we establish in this setting well-posedness of the arising problem using the fra…
An overlapped continuous model framework, for the Helmholtz wave propagation problem in unbounded regions comprising bounded heterogeneous media, was recently introduced and analyzed by the authors ({\tt J. Comput. Phys., {\bf 403}, 109052, 2020}). The continuous Helmholtz system incorporates a radiation condition (RC) and our equivalent hybrid framework facilitates application of widely used finite element methods (FEM) and boundary element methods (BEM), and the resulting discrete systems retain the RC exactly. The FEM and BEM discretizations, respectively, applied to the designed interior h…

This paper reviews the state of the art and discusses recent developments in the field of adaptive isogeometric analysis, with special focus on the mathematical theory. This includes an overview of available spline technologies for the local resolution of possible singularities as well as the state-of-the-art formulation of convergence and quasi-optimality of adaptive algorithms for both the finite element method (FEM) and the boundary element method (BEM) in the frame of isogeometric analysis (IGA).
We derive and analyze a fully computable discrete scheme for fractional partial differential equations posed on the full space $\mathbb{R}^d$ . Based on a reformulation using the well-known Caffarelli-Silvestre extension, we study a modified variational formulation to obtain well-posedness of the discrete problem. Our scheme is obtained by combining a diagonalization procedure with a reformulation using boundary integral equations and a coupling of finite elements and boundary elements. For our discrete method we present a-priori estimates as well as numerical examples.
Acoustic scattering of waves by bounded inhomogeneities in an unbounded homogeneous domain is considered. A symmetric coupled system of time-domain boundary integral equations and the second order formulation of the wave equation is described. A fully discrete system consists of spatial discretization by boundary and finite element methods (BEM/FEM), leapfrog time-stepping in the interior, and convolution quadrature for the boundary integral equations. Convolution quadrature is based on BDF2, trapezoidal rule, or a newly introduced truncated trapezoidal rule that has some favourable properties…
The finite element method (FEM) and the boundary element method (BEM) can numerically solve the Helmholtz system for acoustic wave propagation. When an object with heterogeneous wave speed or density is embedded in an unbounded exterior medium, the coupled FEM-BEM algorithm promises to combine the strengths of each technique. The FEM handles the heterogeneous regions while the BEM models the homogeneous exterior. Even though standard FEM-BEM algorithms are effective, they do require stabilisation at resonance frequencies. One such approach is to add a regularisation term to the system of equat…
In electromagnetic analysis, the finite element and boundary element methods jointly known as 'FEM-BEM coupling' is applied for numerically solving levitation problem based on eddy current. The main focus behind this coupled analysis method is to determine the dynamic characteristic of the levitating body in the presence of a magnetic field. An innovative 3D structure is developed that couples Lagrangian description and BEM-FEM coupling method for this purpose. The coupling methodology is based on the boundary conditions on the common boundaries between FEM and BEM sub-domains. Subsequent codi…
In this paper we discuss the numerical solution on a simple 2D domain of the Helmoltz equation with mixed boundary conditions. The so called radiation problem depends on the wavenumber constant parameter k and it is inspired here by medical applications, where a transducer emits a pulse at a given frequency. This problem has been successfully solved in the past with the classical Finite Element Method (FEM) for relative small values of k. But in modern applications the values of k can be of order of thousands and FEM faces up several numerical difficulties. To overcome these difficulties we so…
This paper presents a shape optimisation system to design the shape of an acoustically-hard object in the three-dimensional open space. Boundary element method (BEM) is suitable to analyse such an exterior field. However, the conventional BEM, which is based on piecewise polynomial shape and interpolation functions, can require many design variables because they are usually chosen as a part of the nodes of the underlying boundary element mesh. In addition, it is not easy for the conventional method to compute the gradient of the sound pressure on the surface, which is necessary to compute the …
The paper outlines some recent developments of the boundary element method (BEM) that makes it more user friendly and suitable for a realistic simulation in geomechanics, especially for underground excavations and tunnelling. The innovations refer to the introduction of isogeometric concepts, elasto-plastic analysis and the simulation of ground support. The introduction of isogeometric concepts for the description of the excavation boundaries results in less user and analysis effort, since complex geometries can be modelled with few parameters and degrees of freedom. No mesh generation is nece…
We consider the well-posedness and a priori error estimates of a 3d FEM-BEM coupling method for fluid-structure interaction in the time domain. For an elastic body immersed in a fluid, the exterior linear wave equation for the fluid is reduced to an integral equation on the boundary involving the Poincaré-Steklov operator. The resulting problem is solved using a Galerkin boundary element method in the time domain, coupled to a finite element method for the Lamé equation inside the elastic body. Based on ideas from the time-independent coupling formulation, we obtain an a priori error estimate …
The paper is concerned with the development of efficient and accurate solution procedures for the isogeometric boundary element method (BEM) when applied to problems that contain inclusions that have elastic properties different to the computed domain. This topic has been addressed in previous papers but the approach presented here is a considerable improvement in terms of efficiency and accuracy. One innovation is that initial stresses instead of body forces are used. This then allows a one step solution without iteration. In addition, a novel approach is used for the computation of strains, …
Isogeometric analysis (IGA) has proven to be an improvement on the classical finite element method (FEM) in several fields, including structural mechanics and fluid dynamics. In this paper, the performance of IGA coupled with the infinite element method (IEM) for some acoustic scattering problems is investigated. In particular, the simple problem of acoustic scattering by a rigid sphere, and the scattering of acoustic waves by an elastic spherical shell with fluid domains both inside and outside, representing a full acoustic-structure interaction (ASI) problem. Finally, a mock shell and a simp…
In this paper the numerical solution of potential problems defined on 3D unbounded domains is addressed with Boundary Element Methods (BEMs), since in this way the problem is studied only on the boundary, and thus any finite approximation of the infinite domain can be avoided. The isogeometric analysis (IGA) setting is considered and in particular B-splines and NURBS functions are taken into account. In order to exploit all the possible benefits from using spline spaces, an important point is the development of specific cubature formulas for weakly and nearly singular integrals. Our proposal f…
Isogeometric analysis with the boundary element method (IGABEM) has recently gained interest. In this paper, the approximability of IGABEM on 3D acoustic scattering problems will be investigated and a new improved BeTSSi submarine will be presented as a benchmark example. Both Galerkin and collocation are considered in combination with several boundary integral equations (BIE). In addition to the conventional BIE, regularized versions of this BIE will be considered. Moreover, the hyper-singular BIE and the Burton--Miller formulation are also considered. A new adaptive integration routine is pr…
Elliptic boundary value problems which are posed on a random domain can be mapped to a fixed, nominal domain. The randomness is thus transferred to the diffusion matrix and the loading. While this domain mapping method is quite efficient for theory and practice, since only a single domain discretisation is needed, it also requires the knowledge of the domain mapping. However, in certain applications, the random domain is only described by its random boundary, while the quantity of interest is defined on a fixed, deterministic subdomain. In this setting, it thus becomes necessary to compute a r…
Isogeometric approach applied to Boundary Element Methods is an emerging research area. In this context, the aim of the present contribution is that of investigating, from a numerical point of view, the Symmetric Galerkin Boundary Element Method (SGBEM) devoted to the solution of 2D boundary value problems for the Laplace equation, where the boundary and the unknowns on it are both represented by B-splines. We mainly compare this approach, which we call IGA-SGBEM, with a curvilinear SGBEM, which operates on any boundary given by explicit parametric representation and where the approximate solu…
A natural medium for wave propagation comprises a coupled bounded heterogeneous region and an unbounded homogeneous free-space. Frequency-domain wave propagation models in the medium, such as the variable coefficient Helmholtz equation, include a faraway decay radiation condition (RC). It is desirable to develop algorithms that incorporate the full physics of the heterogeneous and unbounded medium wave propagation model, and avoid an approximation of the RC. In this work we first present and analyze an overlapping decomposition framework that is equivalent to the full-space heterogeneous-homog…
An Isogeometric Boundary Element Method (IgA-BEM) is considered for the numerical solution of Helmholtz problems on 3D bounded or unbounded domains, admitting a smooth conformal multi-patch representation of their finite boundary surface. The discretization space is formed by $C^0$ inter-patch continuous basis functions whose restriction to a patch simplifies to the span of tensor product B-splines composed with the given patch parameterization. For both regular and singular integration, the proposed model utilizes a numerical procedure defined on the support of each trial B-spline function, w…
