We present a wavenumber-explicit analysis of FEM-BEM coupling methods for time-harmonic Helmholtz problems proposed in arXiv:2004.03523 for conforming discretizations and in arXiv:2105.06173 for discontinuous Galerkin (DG) volume discretizations. We show that the conditions that $kh/p$ be sufficiently small and that $\log(k) / p$ be bounded imply quasi-optimality of both conforming and DG-method, where $k$ is the wavenumber, $h$ the mesh size, and $p$ the approximation order. The analysis relies on a $k$-explicit regularity theory for a three-field coupling formulation.
An overlapped continuous model framework, for the Helmholtz wave propagation problem in unbounded regions comprising bounded heterogeneous media, was recently introduced and analyzed by the authors ({\tt J. Comput. Phys., {\bf 403}, 109052, 2020}). The continuous Helmholtz system incorporates a radiation condition (RC) and our equivalent hybrid framework facilitates application of widely used finite element methods (FEM) and boundary element methods (BEM), and the resulting discrete systems retain the RC exactly. The FEM and BEM discretizations, respectively, applied to the designed interior h…
Approximate solutions to elliptic partial differential equations with known kernel can be obtained via the boundary element method (BEM) by discretizing the corresponding boundary integral operators and solving the resulting linear system of algebraic equations. Due to the presence of singular and hypersingular integrals, the evaluation of the operator matrix entries requires the use of regularization techniques. In this work, the singular and hypersingular integrals associated with first-order Galerkin discrete boundary operators for the two-dimensional Helmholtz equation are reduced to quasi…
An Isogeometric Boundary Element Method (IgA-BEM) is considered for the numerical solution of Helmholtz problems on 3D bounded or unbounded domains, admitting a smooth conformal multi-patch representation of their finite boundary surface. The discretization space is formed by $C^0$ inter-patch continuous basis functions whose restriction to a patch simplifies to the span of tensor product B-splines composed with the given patch parameterization. For both regular and singular integration, the proposed model utilizes a numerical procedure defined on the support of each trial B-spline function, w…
We derive and analyze a fully computable discrete scheme for fractional partial differential equations posed on the full space $\mathbb{R}^d$ . Based on a reformulation using the well-known Caffarelli-Silvestre extension, we study a modified variational formulation to obtain well-posedness of the discrete problem. Our scheme is obtained by combining a diagonalization procedure with a reformulation using boundary integral equations and a coupling of finite elements and boundary elements. For our discrete method we present a-priori estimates as well as numerical examples.
Acoustic scattering of waves by bounded inhomogeneities in an unbounded homogeneous domain is considered. A symmetric coupled system of time-domain boundary integral equations and the second order formulation of the wave equation is described. A fully discrete system consists of spatial discretization by boundary and finite element methods (BEM/FEM), leapfrog time-stepping in the interior, and convolution quadrature for the boundary integral equations. Convolution quadrature is based on BDF2, trapezoidal rule, or a newly introduced truncated trapezoidal rule that has some favourable properties…
The discretisation of boundary integral equations for the scalar Helmholtz equation leads to large dense linear systems. Efficient boundary element methods (BEM), such as the fast multipole method (FMM) and $\Hmat$ based methods, focus on structured low-rank approximations of subblocks in these systems. It is known that the ranks of these subblocks increase linearly with the wavenumber. We explore a data-sparse representation of BEM-matrices valid for a range of frequencies, based on extracting the known phase of the Green's function. Algebraically, this leads to a Hadamard product of a freque…
The finite element method (FEM) and the boundary element method (BEM) can numerically solve the Helmholtz system for acoustic wave propagation. When an object with heterogeneous wave speed or density is embedded in an unbounded exterior medium, the coupled FEM-BEM algorithm promises to combine the strengths of each technique. The FEM handles the heterogeneous regions while the BEM models the homogeneous exterior. Even though standard FEM-BEM algorithms are effective, they do require stabilisation at resonance frequencies. One such approach is to add a regularisation term to the system of equat…
We consider a Johnson-Nédélec FEM-BEM coupling, which is a direct and non-symmetric coupling of finite and boundary element methods, in order to solve interface problems for the magnetostatic Maxwell's equations with the magnetic vector potential ansatz. In the FEM-domain, equations may be non-linear, whereas they are exclusively linear in the BEM-part to guarantee the existence of a fundamental solution. First, the weak problem is formulated in quotient spaces to avoid resolving to a saddle point problem. Second, we establish in this setting well-posedness of the arising problem using the fra…
In electromagnetic analysis, the finite element and boundary element methods jointly known as 'FEM-BEM coupling' is applied for numerically solving levitation problem based on eddy current. The main focus behind this coupled analysis method is to determine the dynamic characteristic of the levitating body in the presence of a magnetic field. An innovative 3D structure is developed that couples Lagrangian description and BEM-FEM coupling method for this purpose. The coupling methodology is based on the boundary conditions on the common boundaries between FEM and BEM sub-domains. Subsequent codi…
We consider the well-posedness and a priori error estimates of a 3d FEM-BEM coupling method for fluid-structure interaction in the time domain. For an elastic body immersed in a fluid, the exterior linear wave equation for the fluid is reduced to an integral equation on the boundary involving the Poincaré-Steklov operator. The resulting problem is solved using a Galerkin boundary element method in the time domain, coupled to a finite element method for the Lamé equation inside the elastic body. Based on ideas from the time-independent coupling formulation, we obtain an a priori error estimate …
We present a coupling of the Finite Element and the Boundary Element Method in an isogeometric framework to approximate either two-dimensional Laplace interface problems or boundary value problems consisting in two disjoint domains. We consider the Finite Element Method in the bounded domains to simulate possibly non-linear materials. The Boundary Element Method is applied in unbounded or thin domains where the material behavior is linear. The isogeometric framework allows to combine different design and analysis tools: first, we consider the same type of NURBS parameterizations for an exact g…
Elliptic boundary value problems which are posed on a random domain can be mapped to a fixed, nominal domain. The randomness is thus transferred to the diffusion matrix and the loading. While this domain mapping method is quite efficient for theory and practice, since only a single domain discretisation is needed, it also requires the knowledge of the domain mapping. However, in certain applications, the random domain is only described by its random boundary, while the quantity of interest is defined on a fixed, deterministic subdomain. In this setting, it thus becomes necessary to compute a r…
A natural medium for wave propagation comprises a coupled bounded heterogeneous region and an unbounded homogeneous free-space. Frequency-domain wave propagation models in the medium, such as the variable coefficient Helmholtz equation, include a faraway decay radiation condition (RC). It is desirable to develop algorithms that incorporate the full physics of the heterogeneous and unbounded medium wave propagation model, and avoid an approximation of the RC. In this work we first present and analyze an overlapping decomposition framework that is equivalent to the full-space heterogeneous-homog…
When solving the Helmholtz equation numerically, the accuracy of numerical solution deteriorates as the wave number $k$ increases, known as `pollution effect' which is directly related to the phase difference between the exact and numerical solutions, caused by the numerical dispersion. In this paper, we propose a dispersion analysis for the continuous interior penalty finite element method (CIP-FEM) and derive an explicit formula of the penalty parameter for the $p^{\rm th}$ order CIP-FEM on tensor product (Cartesian) meshes, with which the phase difference is reduced from $\mathcal{O}\big(k(…
For the $h$-finite-element method ($h$-FEM) applied to the Helmholtz equation, the question of how quickly the meshwidth $h$ must decrease with the frequency $k$ to maintain accuracy as $k$ increases has been studied since the mid 80's. Nevertheless, there still do not exist in the literature any $k$-explicit bounds on the relative error of the FEM solution (the measure of the FEM error most often used in practical applications), apart from in one dimension. The main result of this paper is the sharp result that, for the lowest fixed-order conforming FEM (with polynomial degree, $p$, equal to …
A posteriori upper and lower bounds are derived for the linear finite element method (FEM) for the Helmholtz equation with large wave number. It is proved rigorously that the standard residual type error estimator seriously underestimates the true error of the FE solution for the mesh size $h$ in the preasymptotic regime, which is first observed by Babuška, et al. for an one dimensional problem. By establishing an equivalence relationship between the error estimators for the FE solution and the corresponding elliptic projection of the exact solution, an adaptive algorithm is proposed and its c…
A nonlinear Helmholtz equation (NLH) with high wave number and Sommerfeld radiation condition is approximated by the perfectly matched layer (PML) technique and then discretized by the linear finite element method (FEM). Wave-number-explicit stability and regularity estimates and the exponential convergence are proved for the nonlinear truncated PML problem. Preasymptotic error estimates are obtained for the FEM, where the logarithmic factors in h required by the previous results for the NLH with impedance boundary condition are removed in the case of two dimensions. Moreover, local quadratic …
