Experiments investigating the fine structure of the IsoScalar Giant Monopole Resonance (ISGMR) of 48Ca were carried out with a 200 MeV alpha inelastic-scattering reaction, using the high energy-resolution capability and the zero-degree setup at the K600 magnetic spectrometer of iThemba LABS, Cape Town, South Africa. Considerable fine structure is observed in the energy region of the ISGMR. Characteristic energy scales are extracted from the experimental data by means of a wavelet analysis and compared with the state-of-the-art theoretical calculations within a Skyrme-RPA (random phase approximation) approach using the finite-rank separable approximation with the inclusion of phonon-phonon coupling (PPC). Good agreement was observed between the experimental data and the theoretical predictions.

To identify the 3alpha BEC state with the excess neutron, we have investigated the monopole strength of the excited states of 13C by using the theoretical framework of the real-time evolution method. The calculations have revealed several candidates of the Hoyle-analog states in a highly excited region.
"Background-free" spectra of inelastic $α$-particle scattering have been measured at a beam energy of 385 MeV in $^{90, 92}$Zr and $^{92}$Mo at extremely forward angles, including 0$^{\circ}$. The ISGMR strength distributions for the three nuclei coincide with each other, establishing clearly that nuclear incompressibility is not influenced by nuclear shell structure near $A\sim$90 as was claimed in recent measurements.
The properties of the isoscalar giant monopole resonance (ISGMR) for the double magic $^{48}$Ca are analyzed in the framework of a microscopic model based on Skyrme-type interactions. A method for simultaneously taking into account the coupling between one-, two-, and three-phonon terms in the wave functions of $0^{+}$ states has been developed. The inclusion of three-phonon configurations leads to a substantial redistribution of the ISGMR strength to lower energy $0^{+}$ states and also higher energy tail. Our results demonstrate that the developed approach enables to us to describe a gross s…
Background: In highly deformed nuclei, there is a noticeable coupling of the Isoscalar Giant Monopole Resonance (ISGMR) and the $K = 0$ component of the Isoscalar Giant Quadrupole Resonance (ISGQR), which results in a double peak structure of the isoscalar monopole (IS0) strength (a narrow low-energy deformation-induced peak and a main broad ISGMR part). The energy of the narrow low-lying IS0 peak is sensitive to both the incompressibility modulus $K_\infty$ and the coupling between IS0 and isoscalar quadrupole (IS2) strength. Objective: This study aims to investigate the two-peaked structure …
The recent RCNP $(α, α')$ data on the Isoscalar Giant Monopole Resonance (ISGMR) and Isoscalar Giant Quadrupole Resonance (ISGQR) in $^{92,94,96,98,100}$Mo are analyzed within a fully self-consistent Quasiparticle Random Phase Approximation (QRPA) approach with Skyrme interactions, in which pairing correlations and possible axial deformations are taken into account. The Skyrme sets SkM*, SLy6, SVbas and SkP$^δ$, that explore a diversity of nuclear matter properties, are used. We discuss the connection between the line shape of the monopole strength ISGMR and the deformation-induced coupling be…
Isoscalar giant resonances and low spin states in $^{32}$S have been measured with inelastic $α$ scattering at extremely forward angles including zero degrees at E$_α$ = 386 MeV. By applying the multipole decomposition analysis, various excited states are classified according to their spin and parities (J$^π$), and are discussed in relation to the super deformed and $^{28}$Si + $α$ cluster bands.
Effect of ground-state deformation on the Isoscalar Giant Monopole Resonance and the first observation of overtones of the Isoscalar Giant Quadrupole Resonance in rare-earth Nd isotopes
We present an ab-initio study of the isoscalar monopole excitations of 4He using different realistic nuclear interactions, including modern effective field theory potentials. In particular we concentrate on the transition form factor $F_{\cal M}$ to the narrow $0^+$ resonance close to threshold. F_M exhibits a strong potential model dependence, and can serve as a kind of prism to distinguish among different nuclear force models. Comparing to the measurements obtained from inelastic electron scattering off 4He, one finds that the state-of-the-art theoretical transition form factors are at varia…
The strength distribution of the isoscalar giant dipole resonance (ISGDR) in $^{58}$Ni has been obtained over the energy range 10.5--49.5 MeV via extreme forward angle scattering (including 0$^{\circ}$) of 386 MeV $α$ particles. We observe a ``bi-modal'' ${E1}$ strength distribution for the first time in an A $<$ 90 nucleus. The observed ISGDR strength distribution is in good agreement with the predictions of a recent QRPA calculation.
[Background] Various cluster states of astrophysical interest are expected to exist in the excited states of $^{28}{\rm Si}$. However, they have not been identified firmly, because of the experimental and theoretical difficulties. [Purpose] To establish the $^{24}$Mg+$α$, $^{16}$O+$^{12}$C and $^{20}$Ne+2$α$ cluster bands, we theoretically search for the negative-parity cluster bands that are paired with the positive-parity bands to constitute the inversion doublets. We also offer the isoscalar monopole and dipole transitions as a promising probe for the clustering. We numerically show that th…
The isoscalar giant dipole resonance (ISGDR) has been investigated in 208Pb using inelastic scattering of 400 MeV alpha particles at forward angles, including 0deg. Using the superior capabilities of the Grand Raiden spectrometer, it has been possible to obtain spectra devoid of any "instrumental" background. The ISGDR strength distribution has been extracted from a multipole-composition of the observed spectra. The implication of these results on the experimental value of nuclear incompressibility are discussed.
We have investigated the isoscalar giant resonances in the Sn isotopes using inelastic scattering of 386-MeV alpha-particles at extremely forward angles, including 0deg. We have obtained completely "background-free inelastic-scattering spectra for the Sn isotopes over the angular range 0deg--9deg and up to an excitation energy of 31.5 MeV. The strength distributions for various multipoles were extracted by a multipole decomposition analysis based on the expected angular distributions of the respective multipoles. We find that the centroid energies of the isoscalar giant monopole resonance (ISG…
Inelastic $α$-particle scattering at energies of a few hundred MeV and very-forward scattering angles including $0^\circ$ has been established as a tool for the study of the isoscalar giant monopole (IS0) strength distributions in nuclei. An independent investigation of the IS0 strength in nuclei across a wide mass range was performed using the $0^\circ$ facility at iThemba Laboratory for Accelerator Based Sciences (iThemba LABS), South Africa, to understand differences observed between IS0 strength distributions in previous experiments performed at the Texas A\&M University (TAMU) Cyclotron I…
The fine structure of the isoscalar giant quadrupole resonance in ^{208}Pb, observed in high-resolution (p,p') and (e,e') experiments, is studied using the entropy index method. In a novel way, it enables to determine the number of scales present in the spectra and their magnitude. We find intermediate scales of fluctuations around 1.1 MeV, 460 keV and 125 keV for an excitation energy region 0 - 12 MeV. A comparison with scales extracted from second RPA calculations, which are in good agreement with experiment, shows that they arise from the internal mixing of collective motion with two partic…
The isoscalar giant monopole, dipole, and quadrupole strength distributions have been deduced in $^{90, 92}$Zr, and $^{92}$Mo from "background-free" spectra of inelastic $α$-particle scattering at a beam energy of 385 MeV at extremely forward angles, including 0$^{\circ}$. These strength distributions were extracted by a multipole-decomposition analysis based on the expected angular distributions of the respective multipoles. All these strength distributions for the three nuclei practically coincide with each other, affirming that giant resonances, being collective phenomena, are not influence…
Isoscalar monopole strength function in $^{16}$O up to $E_{x}\simeq40$ MeV is discussed. We found that the fine structures at the low energy region up to $E_{x} \simeq 16$ MeV in the experimental monopole strength function obtained by the $^{16}$O$(α,α^{\prime})$ reaction can be rather satisfactorily reproduced within the framework of the $4α$ cluster model, while the gross three bump structures observed at the higher energy region ($16 \lesssim E_{x} \lesssim 40$ MeV) look likely to be approximately reconciled by the mean-field calculations such as RPA and QRPA. In this paper, it is emphasize…
The properties of the alpha+28Si and 16O+16O molecular states which are embedded in the excited states of 32S and can have an impact on the stellar reactions are investigated using the antisymmetrized molecular dynamics. From the analysis of the cluster spectroscopic factors, the candidates of alpha+28Si and 16O+16O molecular states are identified close to and above the cluster threshold energies. The calculated properties of the alpha+28Si molecular states are consistent with those reported by the alpha+28Siresonant scattering experiments. On the other hand, the 16O+16O molecular state, which…
Two recent studies of the evolution of the isoscalar giant monopole resonance (ISGMR) within the calcium isotope chain report conflicting results. One study suggests that the monopole resonance energy, and thus the incompressibility of the nucleus $K_{A}$ increase with mass, which implies that $K_τ$, the asymmetry term in the nuclear incompressibility, has a positive value. The other study reports a weak decreasing trend of the energy moments, resulting in a generally accepted negative value for $K_τ$. An independent measurement of the central region of the ISGMR in the Ca isotope chain is pro…
The excitation and subsequent proton decay of the isoscalar giant dipole resonance (ISGDR) in $^{208}$Pb have been investigated via the $^{208}$Pb($α, α^{\prime}p)^{207}$Tl reaction at 400 MeV. Excitation of the ISGDR has been identified by the difference-of-spectra method. The enhancement of the ISGDR strength at high excitation energies observed in the multipole-decomposition-analysis of the singles $^{208}$Pb($α,α^{\prime}$) spectra is not present in the excitation energy spectrum obtained in coincidence measurement. The partial branching ratios for direct proton decay of ISGDR to low-lying…
The phenomenon of fine structure of the Isoscalar Giant Quadrupole Resonance (ISGQR) has been studied with high energy-resolution proton inelastic scattering at iThemba LABS in the chain of stable even-mass Nd isotopes covering the transition from spherical to deformed ground states. A wavelet analysis of the background-subtracted spectra in the deformed 146,148,150Nd isotopes reveals characteristic scales in correspondence with scales obtained from a Skyrme RPA calculation using the SVmas10 parameterization. A semblance analysis shows that these scales arise from the energy shift between the …
Proton decay from the 3$\hbarω$ isoscalar giant dipole resonance (ISGDR) in $^{58}$Ni has been measured using the ($α,α'p$) reaction at a bombarding energy of 386 MeV to investigate its decay properties. We have extracted the ISGDR strength under the coincidence condition between inelastically scattered $α$ particles at forward angles and decay protons emitted at backward angles. Branching ratios for proton decay to low-lying states of $^{57}$Co have been determined, and the results compared to predictions of recent continuum-RPA calculations. The final-state spectra of protons decaying to the…
The fragmentation of the Isoscalar Giant Quadrupole Resonance (ISGQR) in 40Ca has been investigated in high energy-resolution experiments using proton inelastic scattering at E_p = 200 MeV. Fine structure is observed in the region of the ISGQR and its characteristic energy scales are extracted from the experimental data by means of a wavelet analysis. The experimental scales are well described by Random Phase Approximation (RPA) and second-RPA calculations with an effective interaction derived from a realistic nucleon-nucleon interaction by the Unitary Correlation Operator Method (UCOM). In th…
The energetic beam of (spin and isospin zero) $α$-particles remains a very efficient probe for the nuclear isoscalar giant resonances. In the present work, a microscopic folding model study of the isoscalar giant resonances in $^{208}$Pb induced by inelastic \aPb scattering at $E_{\rm lab}=240$ and 386 MeV has been performed using the (complex) CDM3Y6 interaction and nuclear transition densities given by both the collective model and Random Phase Approximation (RPA) approach. The fractions of energy weighted sum rule around the main peaks of the isoscalar monopole, dipole and quadrupole giant …
Nuclei in the $sd$-shell demonstrate a remarkable interplay of cluster and mean-field phenomena. The $N=Z$ nuclei, such as $^{24}$Mg and $^{28}$Si, have been the focus of the theoretical study of both these phenomena in the past. The cluster and vortical mean-field phenomena can be probed by excitation of isoscalar monopole and dipole states in scattering of isoscalar particles such as deuterons or $α$ particles. Inelastically scattered $α$ particles were momentum-analysed in the K600 magnetic spectrometer at iThemba LABS, Cape Town, South Africa. The scattered particles were detected in two m…
Low-energy strength is predicted for the isoscalar monopole response of neutron-rich Ni isotopes, in calculations performed using the microscopic Skyrme HF+RPA and relativistic RHB+RQRPA models. Both models, although based on different energy density functionals, predict the occurrence of pronounced monopole states in the energy region between 10 MeV and 15 MeV, well separated from the isoscalar GMR. The analysis of transition densities and corresponding particle-hole configurations shows that these states represent almost pure neutron single hole-particle excitations. Even though their locati…
Giant resonances--highly collective, high-frequency oscillations of the atomic nucleus--are the focus of this chapter. We discuss the isoscalar excitations, where the protons and neutrons oscillate in phase, up to angular-momentum transfers $L$ = 3. The procedures of experiments and data analysis employed in extracting the strength distributions associated with these resonances are discussed. The experimentally extracted strength distributions are presented, along with information on the properties of these resonances available to date. The effect of deformation of the nuclear ground state on …
Inelastic ${}^{6}$Li scattering at 100 MeV/u on ${}^{12}$C and ${}^{93}$Nb have been measured with the high-resolution magnetic spectrometer Grand Raiden. The magnetic-rigidity settings of the spectrometer covered excitation energies from 10 to 40 MeV and scattering angles in the range $0^\circ < θ_{\text{lab.}}< 2^\circ$. The isoscalar giant monopole resonance was selectively excited in the present data. Measurements free of instrumental background and the very favorable resonance-to-continuum ratio of ${}^{6}$Li scattering allowed for precise determination of the $E0$ strengths in ${}^{12}$C…

The isoscalar giant monopole resonance (GMR) has been investigated in a series of Sn isotopes (A=112--124) using inelstic scattering of 400-MeV alpha particles at extremely forward angles (including 0deg). The primary aim of the investigation has been to explore the role of the "symmetry-energy" term in the expression for nuclear incompressibility. It is found that the energies of the GMR in the Sn isotopes are significantly lower than those expected from the nuclear incompressibility previously extracted from the available data on the compressional-mode giant resonances.
We have investigated the isoscalar giant monopole resonances (ISGMR) in $^{112-124}$Sn and $^{106-116}$Cd nuclei using inelastic scattering of 386-MeV $α$-particles at extremely forward angles, including 0$^\circ$. The strength distributions for various multipoles were extracted by a multipole decomposition analysis based on the expected angular distributions of the respective multipoles. From the ISGMR results, a value of $K_τ \sim -500$ MeV is obtained for the asymmetry term in the nuclear incompressibility.
We have investigated the isoscalar giant monopole resonance (GMR) in the Sn isotopes, using inelastic scattering of 400-MeV $α$-particles at extremely forward angles, including 0 deg. A value of -550 \pm 100 MeV has been obtained for the asymmetry term, $K_τ$, in the nuclear incompressibility.
The excitation of the isoscalar giant monopole resonance (ISGMR) in $^{116}$Sn and $^{208}$Pb has been investigated using small-angle (including $0^\circ$) inelastic scattering of 100 MeV/u deuteron and multipole-decomposition analysis (MDA). The extracted strength distributions agree well with those from inelastic scattering of 100 MeV/u $α$ particles. These measurements establish deuteron inelastic scattering at E$_d \sim$ 100 MeV/u as a suitable probe for extraction of the ISGMR strength with MDA, making feasible the investigation of this resonance in radioactive isotopes in inverse kinemat…
The systematic study of isoscalar (IS) and isovector (IV) giant quadrupole responses (GQR) in normal and superfluid nuclei presented in [G. Scamps and D. Lacroix, Phys. Rev. 88, 044310 (2013)] is extended to the case of axially deformed and triaxial nuclei. The static and dynamical energy density functional based on Skyrme effective interaction are used to study static properties and dynamical response functions over the whole nuclear chart. Among the 749 nuclei that are considered, 301 and 65 are respectively found to be prolate and oblate while 54 do not present any symmetry axis. For these …
The strength distributions of the giant monopole resonance (GMR) have been measured in the even-A Sn isotopes (A=112--124) with inelastic scattering of 400-MeV $α$ particles in the angular range $0^\circ$--$8.5^\circ$. We find that the experimentally-observed GMR energies of the Sn isotopes are lower than the values predicted by theoretical calculations that reproduce the GMR energies in $^{208}$Pb and $^{90}$Zr very well. From the GMR data, a value of $K_τ = -550 \pm 100$ MeV is obtained for the asymmetry-term in the nuclear incompressibility.
The isoscalar giant monopole resonance (ISGMR) in even-A Cd isotopes has been studied by inelastic $α$-scattering at 100 MeV/u and at extremely forward angles, including 0deg. The asymmetry term in the nuclear incompressibility extracted from the ISGMR in Cd isotopes is found to be $K_τ = -555 \pm 75$ MeV, confirming the value previously obtained from the Sn isotopes. ISGMR strength has been computed in relativistic RPA using NL3 and FSUGold effective interactions. Both models significantly overestimate the centroids of the ISGMR strength in the Cd isotopes. Combined with other recent theoreti…
The isoscalar monopole response of neutron-rich nuclei is sensitive to both the incompressibility coefficient of symmetric nuclear matter and the density dependence of the symmetry energy. The main goal of this paper is to explore the emergence, evolution, and origin of low energy monopole strength along the even-even calcium isotopes: from 40Ca to 60Ca. The distribution of isoscalar monopole strength is computed in a relativistic random phase approximation (RPA) using three effective interactions that have been calibrated to the properties of finite nuclei and neutron stars. A non-spectral ap…
Accurately calibrated (or ``best fit'') relativistic mean-field models are used to compute the distribution of isoscalar monopole strength in 90Zr and 208Pb, and the isovector dipole strength in 208Pb using a continuum random-phase-approximation approach. It is shown that the distribution of isoscalar monopole strength in 208Pb--but not in 90Zr--is sensitive to the density dependence of the symmetry energy. This sensitivity hinders the extraction of the compression modulus of symmetric nuclear matter from the isoscalar giant monopole resonance (ISGMR) in 208Pb. Thus, one relies on 90Zr, a nucl…
We calculate the longitudinal response of 208Pb using a relativistic random-phase approximation to three different parameterizations of the Walecka model with scalar self-interactions. From a nonspectral calculation of the response-that automatically includes the mixing between positive- and negative-energy states-we extract the distribution of strength for the isoscalar monopole, dipole, and high-energy octupole resonances. We employ a consistent formalism that uses the same interaction in the calculation of the ground state as in the calculation of the response. As a result, the conservation…
The compression-mode giant resonances, namely the isoscalar giant monopole and isoscalar giant dipole modes, are examples of collective nuclear motion. Their main interest stems from the fact that one hopes to extrapolate from their properties the incompressibility of uniform nuclear matter, which is a key parameter of the nuclear Equation of State (EoS). Our understanding of these issues has undergone two major jumps, one in the late 1970s when the Isoscalar Giant Monopole Resonance (ISGMR) was experimentally identified, and another around the turn of the millennium since when theory has been…
In this new era of radioactive beam facilities, the discovery of novel modes of excitation in nuclei far away from stability represents an area of intense research activity. In addition, these modes of excitation appear to be sensitive to the uncertain density dependence of the symmetry energy. We study the emergence, evolution, and nature of both the soft and giant isoscalar monopole modes as a function of neutron excess in three unstable Nickel isotopes: 56Ni, 68Ni, and 78Ni. The distribution of isoscalar monopole strength is computed in a relativistic random-phase approximation using severa…
On the basis of an extended antisymmetrized molecular dynamics calculation, we study the cluster structure and the of the 0+ and 1- states of 18O. We discuss that several different kinds of cluster states appear in the excitation spectrum, and their monopole and dipole transitions are interesting fingerprints of unique cluster structure. We show that the monopole/dipole transitions are enhanced for the 14C+alpha cluster states, while they are hindered for the molecular-orbit state. We also point out that the ratio of the electric and isoscalar monopole transition strengths gives a good hint fo…
Giant resonances are collective nuclear vibrations which provide a unique laboratory setting to probe the bulk properties of the nuclear force. One of the isoscalar compressional modes -- the isoscalar giant monopole resonance (ISGMR) -- is useful in constraining the equation of state (EoS) of nuclear matter. For example, the nuclear incompressibility, $K_\infty$, is a fundamental quantity in the EoS and is directly correlated with the energies of the ISGMR in finite nuclei. Previous work has shown that interactions with $K_\infty$ which reproduce the energies of the ISGMR in $^{208}$Pb and $^…
With a newly improved isospin- and momentum-dependent interaction and an isospin-dependent Boltzmann-Uehling-Uhlenbeck transport model, we have investigated the effects of the slope parameter $L$ of the nuclear symmetry energy and the isospin splitting of the nucleon effective mass $m_{n-p}^*=(m_n^*-m_p^*)/m$ on the centroid energy of the isovector giant dipole resonance and the electric dipole polarizability in $^{208}$Pb. With the isoscalar nucleon effective mass $m_s^*=0.7m$ constrained by the empirical optical potential, we obtain a constraint of $L=64.29\pm11.84 (\rm MeV)$ and $m_{n-p}^*=…
Recent improvements in the experimental determination of properties of the Isovector Giant Quadrupole Resonance (IVGQR), as demonstrated in the A=208 mass region, may be instrumental for characterizing the isovector channel of the effective nuclear interaction. We analyze properties of the IVGQR in 208Pb, using both macroscopic and microscopic approaches. The microscopic method is based on families of non-relativistic and covariant Energy Density Functionals (EDF), characterized by a systematic variation of isoscalar and isovector properties of the corresponding nuclear matter equations of sta…
[Background] Giant resonance (GR) is a typical collective mode of vibration. The deformation splitting of the isovector (IV) giant dipole resonance is well established. However, the splitting of GRs with other multipolarities is not well understood. [Purpose] I explore the IV monopole and quadrupole excitations and attempt to obtain the generic features of IV giant resonances in deformed nuclei by investigating the neutral and charge-exchange channels simultaneously. [Method] I employ a nuclear energy-density functional (EDF) method: the Skyrme-Kohn-Sham-Bogoliubov and the quasiparticle random…
Background: The sharp $1^-$ resonances with enhanced isoscalar dipole transition strengths are observed in many light nuclei at relatively small excitation energies, but their nature was unclear. Purpose: We show those resonances can be attributed to the cluster states with asymmetric configurations such as $α$+$^{16}{\rm O}$. We explain why asymmetric cluster states are strongly excited by the isoscalar dipole transition. We also provide a theoretical prediction of the isoscalar dipole transitions in $^{20}{\rm Ne}$ and $^{44}{\rm Ti}$. Method: The transition matrix is analytically derived to…
The assumption of an exact isospin symmetry would imply equal strengths for mirror E1 transitions (at least, in the long-wavelength limit). Actually, large violations of this symmetry rule have been indicated by a number of experimental results, the last of which is the 67As - 67Se doublet investigated at GAMMASPHERE. Here, we examine in detail various possible origins of the observed asymmetry. The coherent effect of Coulomb-induced mixing with the high-lying Giant Isovector Monopole Resonance is proposed as the most probable process to produce a large asymmetry in the E1 transitions, with co…
We have studied the isoscalar giant quadruple resonance (ISGQR) and the isovector giant dipole resonance (IVGDR) in $^{208}$Pb based on an improved isospin-dependent Boltzmann-Uehling-Uhlenbeck transport approach using an improved isospin- and momentum-dependent interaction. With the isoscalar nucleon effective mass and the nucleon-nucleon cross section which reproduces respectively the excitation energy and the width of the ISGQR strength function, the slope parameter of the symmetry energy and the neutron-proton effective mass splitting are constrained respectively within $36<L<62$ MeV and $…
The vibrational structure of the Pygmy Dipole Resonance (PDR) is investigated within a quantum many-body treatment with extended separable interactions able to encode the dependence of nuclear symmetry energy on density. A new picture of PDR is unveiled in terms of a combined dynamics of the neutron skin and of the core isovector polarization, which determines the isoscalar features of PDR while reproducing the isovector properties of Giant Dipole Resonance. The key role played by the variation with density of the symmetry energy on shaping the low-lying dipole response and its isoscalar-isove…
Using inelastic $α$-scattering at extremely forward angles, including $0^\circ$, the strength distributions of the isoscalar giant monopole resonance (ISGMR) have been measured in the $^{204,206,208}$Pb isotopes in order to examine the proposed mutually enhanced magicity (MEM) effect on the nuclear incompressibility. The MEM effect had been suggested as a likely explanation of the "softness" of nuclear incompressibility observed in the ISGMR measurements in the Sn and Cd isotopes. Our experimental results rule out any manifestation of the MEM effect in nuclear incompressibility and leave the q…
Background: Average energies of nuclear collective modes may be efficiently and accurately computed using a non-relativistic constrained approach without reliance on a random phase approximation (RPA). Purpose: To extend the constrained approach to the relativistic domain and to establish its impact on the calibration of energy density functionals. Methods: Relativistic RPA calculations are compared against the predictions of the corresponding constrained approach using two accurately calibrated energy density functionals. Results: We find excellent agreement-at the 2% level or better-between …
The electric dipole response of $^{140}$Ce is investigated using the fully consistent relativistic quasiparticle random phase approximation. By analyzing the isospin structure of the E1 response, it is shown that the low-energy (pygmy) strength separates into two segments with different isospin character. The more pronounced pygmy structure at lower energy is composed of predominantly isoscalar states with surface-peaked transition densities. At somewhat higher energy the calculated E1 strength is primarily of isovector character, as expected for the low-energy tail of the giant dipole resonan…
