Giant resonances are collective nuclear vibrations which provide a unique laboratory setting to probe the bulk properties of the nuclear force. One of the isoscalar compressional modes -- the isoscalar giant monopole resonance (ISGMR) -- is useful in constraining the equation of state (EoS) of nuclear matter. For example, the nuclear incompressibility, $K_\infty$, is a fundamental quantity in the EoS and is directly correlated with the energies of the ISGMR in finite nuclei.
Previous work has shown that interactions with $K_\infty$ which reproduce the energies of the ISGMR in $^{208}$Pb and $^{90}$Zr well, overestimate those of the tin and cadmium nuclei. To further investigate where this "softness" appears in moving away from the doubly-closed nucleus $^{90}$Zr, and how this effect develops, the first portion of this thesis consists of measurements of the ISGMR in the molybdenum isotopes. Comparison of the ISGMR strengths with Random Phase Approximation calculations shows that these nuclei have ISGMR energies which are overestimated to a similar degree as seen in the tin and cadmium nuclei, while the strength of $^{208}$Pb is precisely reproduced. This suggests clearly that the molybdenum nuclei exhibit the same open-shell softness which has been documented previously.
The ISGMR in isotopes encompassing a broad range of proton-neutron asymmetries constrains the dependence of the nuclear incompressibility on the isospin asymmetry, as quantified by the asymmetry term, $K_τ$. To reconcile previously-published and highly concerning conclusions that $K_τ= + 582$ MeV, the second portion of this thesis is focused upon independently studying this claim. A simultaneous measurement of the ISGMR in $^{40,42,44,48}$Ca has excluded the possibility of a positive value for $K_τ$, and found consistency with previous data, placing $K_τ$ at $-510 \pm 115$ MeV.
We have investigated the isoscalar giant monopole resonances (ISGMR) in $^{112-124}$Sn and $^{106-116}$Cd nuclei using inelastic scattering of 386-MeV $α$-particles at extremely forward angles, including 0$^\circ$. The strength distributions for various multipoles were extracted by a multipole decomposition analysis based on the expected angular distributions of the respective multipoles. From the ISGMR results, a value of $K_τ \sim -500$ MeV is obtained for the asymmetry term in the nuclear incompressibility.
We have investigated the isoscalar giant monopole resonance (GMR) in the Sn isotopes, using inelastic scattering of 400-MeV $α$-particles at extremely forward angles, including 0 deg. A value of -550 \pm 100 MeV has been obtained for the asymmetry term, $K_τ$, in the nuclear incompressibility.
"Background-free" spectra of inelastic $α$-particle scattering have been measured at a beam energy of 385 MeV in $^{90, 92}$Zr and $^{92}$Mo at extremely forward angles, including 0$^{\circ}$. The ISGMR strength distributions for the three nuclei coincide with each other, establishing clearly that nuclear incompressibility is not influenced by nuclear shell structure near $A\sim$90 as was claimed in recent measurements.
The strength distributions of the giant monopole resonance (GMR) have been measured in the even-A Sn isotopes (A=112--124) with inelastic scattering of 400-MeV $α$ particles in the angular range $0^\circ$--$8.5^\circ$. We find that the experimentally-observed GMR energies of the Sn isotopes are lower than the values predicted by theoretical calculations that reproduce the GMR energies in $^{208}$Pb and $^{90}$Zr very well. From the GMR data, a value of $K_τ = -550 \pm 100$ MeV is obtained for the asymmetry-term in the nuclear incompressibility.
The isoscalar giant monopole resonance (ISGMR) in even-A Cd isotopes has been studied by inelastic $α$-scattering at 100 MeV/u and at extremely forward angles, including 0deg. The asymmetry term in the nuclear incompressibility extracted from the ISGMR in Cd isotopes is found to be $K_τ = -555 \pm 75$ MeV, confirming the value previously obtained from the Sn isotopes. ISGMR strength has been computed in relativistic RPA using NL3 and FSUGold effective interactions. Both models significantly overestimate the centroids of the ISGMR strength in the Cd isotopes. Combined with other recent theoreti…
Using inelastic $α$-scattering at extremely forward angles, including $0^\circ$, the strength distributions of the isoscalar giant monopole resonance (ISGMR) have been measured in the $^{204,206,208}$Pb isotopes in order to examine the proposed mutually enhanced magicity (MEM) effect on the nuclear incompressibility. The MEM effect had been suggested as a likely explanation of the "softness" of nuclear incompressibility observed in the ISGMR measurements in the Sn and Cd isotopes. Our experimental results rule out any manifestation of the MEM effect in nuclear incompressibility and leave the q…

The isoscalar giant dipole resonance (ISGDR) has been investigated in 208Pb using inelastic scattering of 400 MeV alpha particles at forward angles, including 0deg. Using the superior capabilities of the Grand Raiden spectrometer, it has been possible to obtain spectra devoid of any "instrumental" background. The ISGDR strength distribution has been extracted from a multipole-composition of the observed spectra. The implication of these results on the experimental value of nuclear incompressibility are discussed.
The isoscalar giant monopole resonance (GMR) has been investigated in a series of Sn isotopes (A=112--124) using inelstic scattering of 400-MeV alpha particles at extremely forward angles (including 0deg). The primary aim of the investigation has been to explore the role of the "symmetry-energy" term in the expression for nuclear incompressibility. It is found that the energies of the GMR in the Sn isotopes are significantly lower than those expected from the nuclear incompressibility previously extracted from the available data on the compressional-mode giant resonances.
We have investigated the isoscalar giant resonances in the Sn isotopes using inelastic scattering of 386-MeV alpha-particles at extremely forward angles, including 0deg. We have obtained completely "background-free inelastic-scattering spectra for the Sn isotopes over the angular range 0deg--9deg and up to an excitation energy of 31.5 MeV. The strength distributions for various multipoles were extracted by a multipole decomposition analysis based on the expected angular distributions of the respective multipoles. We find that the centroid energies of the isoscalar giant monopole resonance (ISG…
The compression-mode giant resonances, namely the isoscalar giant monopole and isoscalar giant dipole modes, are examples of collective nuclear motion. Their main interest stems from the fact that one hopes to extrapolate from their properties the incompressibility of uniform nuclear matter, which is a key parameter of the nuclear Equation of State (EoS). Our understanding of these issues has undergone two major jumps, one in the late 1970s when the Isoscalar Giant Monopole Resonance (ISGMR) was experimentally identified, and another around the turn of the millennium since when theory has been…
We present an analysis based on the deformed Quasi Particle Random Phase Approximation, on top of a deformed Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov description of the ground state, aimed at studying the isoscalar monopole and quadrupole response in a deformed nucleus. This analysis is motivated by the need of understanding the coupling between the two modes and how it might affect the extraction of the nuclear incompressibility from the monopole distribution. After discussing this motivation, we present the main ingredients of our theoretical framework, and we show some results obtained with the SLy4 and SkM…
Differences in the density dependence of the symmetry energy predicted by nonrelativistic and relativistic models are suggested, at least in part, as the culprit for the discrepancy in the values of the compression modulus of symmetric nuclear matter extracted from the energy of the giant monopole resonance in 208Pb. ``Best-fit'' relativistic models, with stiffer symmetry energies than Skyrme interactions, consistently predict higher compression moduli than nonrelativistic approaches. Relativistic models with compression moduli in the physically acceptable range of K=200-300 MeV are used to co…
Two recent studies of the evolution of the isoscalar giant monopole resonance (ISGMR) within the calcium isotope chain report conflicting results. One study suggests that the monopole resonance energy, and thus the incompressibility of the nucleus $K_{A}$ increase with mass, which implies that $K_τ$, the asymmetry term in the nuclear incompressibility, has a positive value. The other study reports a weak decreasing trend of the energy moments, resulting in a generally accepted negative value for $K_τ$. An independent measurement of the central region of the ISGMR in the Ca isotope chain is pro…
Within a Bayesian statistical framework using the standard Skyrme-Hartree-Fock model, the maximum {\it a posteriori} (MAP) values and uncertainties of nuclear matter incompressibility and isovector interaction parameters are inferred from the experimental data of giant resonances and neutron-skin thicknesses of typical heavy nuclei. With the uncertainties of the isovector interaction parameters constrained by the data of the isovector giant dipole resonance and the neutron-skin thickness, we have obtained $K_0 = 223_{-8}^{+7}$ MeV at 68% confidence level using the data of the isoscalar giant m…
The ``breathing mode'' of neutron-rich nuclei is our window into the incompressibility of neutron-rich matter. After much confusion on the interpretation of the experimental data, consistency was finally reached between different models that predicted both the distribution of isoscalar monopole strength in finite nuclei and the compression modulus of infinite matter. However, a very recent experiment on the Tin isotopes at the Research Center for Nuclear Physics(RCNP) in Japan has again muddled the waters. Self-consistent models that were successful in reproducing the energy of the giant monop…
Recent data on isoscalar giant monopole resonance (ISGMR) in the calcium isotopes $^{40,44,48}$Ca have suggested that $K_τ$, the asymmetry term in the nuclear incompressibility, has a positive value. A value of $K_τ> 0$ is entirely incompatible with present theoretical frameworks and, if correct, would have far-reaching implications on our understanding of myriad nuclear and astrophysical phenomena. This paper presents results of an independent ISGMR measurement with the $^{40,42,44,48}$Ca($α,α^\prime$) reaction at $E_α= 386$ MeV. These results conclusively discount the possibility of a positi…
The excitation of the isoscalar giant monopole resonance (ISGMR) in $^{116}$Sn and $^{208}$Pb has been investigated using small-angle (including $0^\circ$) inelastic scattering of 100 MeV/u deuteron and multipole-decomposition analysis (MDA). The extracted strength distributions agree well with those from inelastic scattering of 100 MeV/u $α$ particles. These measurements establish deuteron inelastic scattering at E$_d \sim$ 100 MeV/u as a suitable probe for extraction of the ISGMR strength with MDA, making feasible the investigation of this resonance in radioactive isotopes in inverse kinemat…
Experiments investigating the fine structure of the IsoScalar Giant Monopole Resonance (ISGMR) of 48Ca were carried out with a 200 MeV alpha inelastic-scattering reaction, using the high energy-resolution capability and the zero-degree setup at the K600 magnetic spectrometer of iThemba LABS, Cape Town, South Africa. Considerable fine structure is observed in the energy region of the ISGMR. Characteristic energy scales are extracted from the experimental data by means of a wavelet analysis and compared with the state-of-the-art theoretical calculations within a Skyrme-RPA (random phase approxim…
The breathing-mode isoscalar giant monopole resonance (GMR) is investigated using the generator coordinate method within the relativistic mean-field (RMF) theory. Employing the Lagrangian models of the nonlinear-$σ$ model (NL$σ$), the scalar-vector interaction model (SVI) and the $σ$-$ω$ coupling model (SIGO), we show that each Lagrangian model exhibits a distinctly different GMR response. Consequently, Lagrangian models yield a different value of the GMR energy for a given value of the nuclear matter incompressibility $K_\infty$. It is shown that this effect arises largely from a different va…
[Background] Giant resonance (GR) is a typical collective mode of vibration. The deformation splitting of the isovector (IV) giant dipole resonance is well established. However, the splitting of GRs with other multipolarities is not well understood. [Purpose] I explore the IV monopole and quadrupole excitations and attempt to obtain the generic features of IV giant resonances in deformed nuclei by investigating the neutral and charge-exchange channels simultaneously. [Method] I employ a nuclear energy-density functional (EDF) method: the Skyrme-Kohn-Sham-Bogoliubov and the quasiparticle random…
Background: In highly deformed nuclei, there is a noticeable coupling of the Isoscalar Giant Monopole Resonance (ISGMR) and the $K = 0$ component of the Isoscalar Giant Quadrupole Resonance (ISGQR), which results in a double peak structure of the isoscalar monopole (IS0) strength (a narrow low-energy deformation-induced peak and a main broad ISGMR part). The energy of the narrow low-lying IS0 peak is sensitive to both the incompressibility modulus $K_\infty$ and the coupling between IS0 and isoscalar quadrupole (IS2) strength. Objective: This study aims to investigate the two-peaked structure …
The properties of the isoscalar giant monopole resonance (ISGMR) for the double magic $^{48}$Ca are analyzed in the framework of a microscopic model based on Skyrme-type interactions. A method for simultaneously taking into account the coupling between one-, two-, and three-phonon terms in the wave functions of $0^{+}$ states has been developed. The inclusion of three-phonon configurations leads to a substantial redistribution of the ISGMR strength to lower energy $0^{+}$ states and also higher energy tail. Our results demonstrate that the developed approach enables to us to describe a gross s…
The assumption of an exact isospin symmetry would imply equal strengths for mirror E1 transitions (at least, in the long-wavelength limit). Actually, large violations of this symmetry rule have been indicated by a number of experimental results, the last of which is the 67As - 67Se doublet investigated at GAMMASPHERE. Here, we examine in detail various possible origins of the observed asymmetry. The coherent effect of Coulomb-induced mixing with the high-lying Giant Isovector Monopole Resonance is proposed as the most probable process to produce a large asymmetry in the E1 transitions, with co…
Inelastic $α$-particle scattering at energies of a few hundred MeV and very-forward scattering angles including $0^\circ$ has been established as a tool for the study of the isoscalar giant monopole (IS0) strength distributions in nuclei. An independent investigation of the IS0 strength in nuclei across a wide mass range was performed using the $0^\circ$ facility at iThemba Laboratory for Accelerator Based Sciences (iThemba LABS), South Africa, to understand differences observed between IS0 strength distributions in previous experiments performed at the Texas A\&M University (TAMU) Cyclotron I…
The isoscalar giant monopole, dipole, and quadrupole strength distributions have been deduced in $^{90, 92}$Zr, and $^{92}$Mo from "background-free" spectra of inelastic $α$-particle scattering at a beam energy of 385 MeV at extremely forward angles, including 0$^{\circ}$. These strength distributions were extracted by a multipole-decomposition analysis based on the expected angular distributions of the respective multipoles. All these strength distributions for the three nuclei practically coincide with each other, affirming that giant resonances, being collective phenomena, are not influence…
Effect of ground-state deformation on the Isoscalar Giant Monopole Resonance and the first observation of overtones of the Isoscalar Giant Quadrupole Resonance in rare-earth Nd isotopes
The recent RCNP $(α, α')$ data on the Isoscalar Giant Monopole Resonance (ISGMR) and Isoscalar Giant Quadrupole Resonance (ISGQR) in $^{92,94,96,98,100}$Mo are analyzed within a fully self-consistent Quasiparticle Random Phase Approximation (QRPA) approach with Skyrme interactions, in which pairing correlations and possible axial deformations are taken into account. The Skyrme sets SkM*, SLy6, SVbas and SkP$^δ$, that explore a diversity of nuclear matter properties, are used. We discuss the connection between the line shape of the monopole strength ISGMR and the deformation-induced coupling be…

Purpose: To extend the constrained approach to the relativistic domain and to establish its impact on the calibration of energy density functionals. Methods: Relativistic RPA calculations are compared against the predictions of the corresponding constrained approach using two accurately calibrated energy density functionals. Results: We find excellent agreement-at the 2% level or better-between …

The density dependence of nuclear symmetry energy is determined from a systematic study of the isospin dependent bulk properties of asymmetric nuclear matter using the isoscalar and the isovector components of density dependent M3Y interaction. The incompressibility $K_\infty$ for the symmetric nuclear matter, the isospin dependent part $K_{asy}$ of the isobaric incompressibility and the slope $L$ are all in excellent agreement with the constraints recently extracted from measured isotopic dependence of the giant monopole resonances in even-A Sn isotopes, from the neutron skin thickness of nuc…
Both the incompressibility \Ka of a finite nucleus of mass A and that ($K_{\infty}$) of infinite nuclear matter are fundamentally important for many critical issues in nuclear physics and astrophysics. While some consensus has been reached about the $K_{\infty}$, accurate theoretical predictions and experimental extractions of $K_τ$ characterizing the isospin dependence of \Ka have been very difficult. We propose a differential approach to extract the \Kt and \Ki independently from the \Ka data of any two nuclei in a given isotope chain. Applying this new method to the \Ka data from isoscalar …
Inelastic ${}^{6}$Li scattering at 100 MeV/u on ${}^{12}$C and ${}^{93}$Nb have been measured with the high-resolution magnetic spectrometer Grand Raiden. The magnetic-rigidity settings of the spectrometer covered excitation energies from 10 to 40 MeV and scattering angles in the range $0^\circ < θ_{\text{lab.}}< 2^\circ$. The isoscalar giant monopole resonance was selectively excited in the present data. Measurements free of instrumental background and the very favorable resonance-to-continuum ratio of ${}^{6}$Li scattering allowed for precise determination of the $E0$ strengths in ${}^{12}$C…
Giant multipole resonances in Nd and Sm isotopes are studied by employing the quasiparticle-random-phase approximation on the basis of the Skyrme energy-density-functional method. Deformation effects on giant resonances are investigated in these isotopes which manifest a typical nuclear shape change from spherical to prolate shapes. The peak energy, the broadening, and the deformation splitting of the isoscalar giant monopole (ISGMR) and quadrupole (ISGQR) resonances agree well with measurements. The magnitude of the peak splitting and the fraction of the energy-weighted strength in the lower …
In this new era of radioactive beam facilities, the discovery of novel modes of excitation in nuclei far away from stability represents an area of intense research activity. In addition, these modes of excitation appear to be sensitive to the uncertain density dependence of the symmetry energy. We study the emergence, evolution, and nature of both the soft and giant isoscalar monopole modes as a function of neutron excess in three unstable Nickel isotopes: 56Ni, 68Ni, and 78Ni. The distribution of isoscalar monopole strength is computed in a relativistic random-phase approximation using severa…
Background: Pairing correlations play a critical role in determining numerous properties of open-shell nuclei. Traditionally, they are included in a mean-field description of atomic nuclei through the approximate Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer or Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov formalism. Purpose: We propose a new hybrid ''relativistic-mean-field-plus-pairing'' approach in which pairing is treated exactly so the number of particles is conserved. To verify the reliability of the formalism, we apply it to the study of both ground-state properties and isoscalar monopole excitations of the Tin isotopes. Method…
Giant resonances encapsulate the dynamic response of the nuclear ground state to external perturbations. As such, they offer a unique view of the nucleus that is often not accessible otherwise. Although interesting in their own right, giant resonances are also enormously valuable in providing stringent constraints on the equation of state of asymmetric matter. We this view in mind, we focus on two modes of excitation that are essential in reaching this goal: the isoscalar giant monopole resonance (GMR) and the isovector giant dipole resonance (GDR). GMR energies in heavy nuclei are sensitive t…

We introduce a new relativistic energy density functional constrained by the ground state properties of atomic nuclei along with the isoscalar giant monopole resonance energy and dipole polarizability in $^{208}$Pb. A unified framework of the relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov model and random phase approximation based on the relativistic density-dependent point coupling interaction is established in order to determine the DD-PCX parameterization by $χ^2$ minimization. This procedure is supplemented with the co-variance analysis in order to estimate statistical uncertainties in the model paramete…
We have constructed a Lagrangian model (SIG-OM) with coupling of sigma and omega mesons in the relativistic mean-field theory. Properties of finite nuclei and nuclear matter have been explored with the new Lagrangian model. The study shows that with SIG-OM an excellent description of binding energies and charge radii of nuclei over a large range of isospin is achieved. With an incompressibility of nuclear matter K=265 MeV, it is also able to describe the breathing-mode isoscalar giant monopole resonance energies appropriately. It is shown that the high-density behaviour of the equation of stat…
The energetic beam of (spin and isospin zero) $α$-particles remains a very efficient probe for the nuclear isoscalar giant resonances. In the present work, a microscopic folding model study of the isoscalar giant resonances in $^{208}$Pb induced by inelastic \aPb scattering at $E_{\rm lab}=240$ and 386 MeV has been performed using the (complex) CDM3Y6 interaction and nuclear transition densities given by both the collective model and Random Phase Approximation (RPA) approach. The fractions of energy weighted sum rule around the main peaks of the isoscalar monopole, dipole and quadrupole giant …
The distribution of isoscalar monopole strength in the neutron-even 112-124Sn-isotopes has been computed using a relativistic random-phase-approximation approach. The accurately-calibrated model used here (``FSUGold'') has been successful in reproducing both ground-state observables as well as collective excitations - including the giant monopole resonance (GMR) in 90Zr, 144Sm, and 208Pb. Yet this same model significantly overestimates the GMR energies in the Sn isotopes. It is argued that the question of ``Why is Tin so soft?'' becomes an important challenge to the field and one that should b…
The experimental and theoretical studies of Giant Resonances, or more generally of the nuclear collective vibrations, are a well established domain in which sophisticated techniques have been introduced and firm conclusions reached after an effort of several decades. From it, information on the nuclear equation of state can be extracted, albeit not far from usual nuclear densities. In this contribution, which complements other contributions appearing in the current volume, we survey some of the constraints that have been extracted recently concerning the parameters of the nuclear symmetry ener…

Bayesian analyses on both isoscalar and isovector nuclear interaction parameters are carried out based on the Korea-IBS-Daegu-SKKU (KIDS) model under the constraints of nuclear structure data of $^{208}$Pb and $^{120}$Sn. Under the constraint of the neutron-skin thickness, it is found that incorporating the curvature parameter $K_{sym}$ of nuclear symmetry energy as an independent variable significantly broadens the posterior probability distribution function (PDF) of the slope parameter $L$, and affects the related correlations. Typically, the anticorrelation between $L$ and the symmetry ener…
Isoscalar giant resonances, being the archetypal forms of collective nuclear behavior, have been studied extensively for decades with the goal of constraining bulk nuclear properties of the equation of state, as well as for modeling dynamical behaviors within stellar environments. An important such mode is the isoscalar electric giant monopole resonance (ISGMR) that can be understood as a radially symmetric density vibration within the saturated nuclear volume. The field has a few key open questions, which have been proposed and remain unresolved. One of the more provocative questions is the e…
Accurately calibrated (or ``best fit'') relativistic mean-field models are used to compute the distribution of isoscalar monopole strength in 90Zr and 208Pb, and the isovector dipole strength in 208Pb using a continuum random-phase-approximation approach. It is shown that the distribution of isoscalar monopole strength in 208Pb--but not in 90Zr--is sensitive to the density dependence of the symmetry energy. This sensitivity hinders the extraction of the compression modulus of symmetric nuclear matter from the isoscalar giant monopole resonance (ISGMR) in 208Pb. Thus, one relies on 90Zr, a nucl…
The giant monopole, dipole and quadrupole responses in $^{40}$Ca, $^{90}$Zr, $^{120}$Sn and $^{208}$Pb are investigated using linear response treatment based on a stochastic one-body transport theory. Effects of the coupling to low-lying surface modes (coherent mechanism) and the incoherent mechanism due to nucleon-nucleon collisions are included beyond the usual mean-field description. We emphasize the importance of both mechanism in the fragmentation and damping of giant resonance. Calculated spectra are compared with experiment in terms of percentage of Energy-Weighted Sum-Rules in various …
We calculate the longitudinal response of 208Pb using a relativistic random-phase approximation to three different parameterizations of the Walecka model with scalar self-interactions. From a nonspectral calculation of the response-that automatically includes the mixing between positive- and negative-energy states-we extract the distribution of strength for the isoscalar monopole, dipole, and high-energy octupole resonances. We employ a consistent formalism that uses the same interaction in the calculation of the ground state as in the calculation of the response. As a result, the conservation…
We review the recent progress on studying the nuclear collective dynamics by solving the Boltzmann-Uehling-Uhlenbeck (BUU) equation with the lattice Hamiltonian method treating the collision term by the full-ensemble stochastic collision approach. This lattice BUU (LBUU) method has recently been developed and implemented in a GPU parallel computing technique, and achieves a rather stable nuclear ground-state evolution and high accuracy in evaluating the nucleon-nucleon (NN) collision term. This new LBUU method has been applied to investigate the nuclear isoscalar giant monopole resonances and …
