We have investigated the isoscalar giant resonances in the Sn isotopes using inelastic scattering of 386-MeV alpha-particles at extremely forward angles, including 0deg. We have obtained completely "background-free inelastic-scattering spectra for the Sn isotopes over the angular range 0deg--9deg and up to an excitation energy of 31.5 MeV. The strength distributions for various multipoles were extracted by a multipole decomposition analysis based on the expected angular distributions of the respective multipoles. We find that the centroid energies of the isoscalar giant monopole resonance (ISGMR) in the Sn isotopes are significantly lower than the theoretical predictions. In addition, based on the ISGMR results, a value of K_{tau} = -550 \pm 100 MeV is obtained for the asymmetry term in the nuclear incompressibility. Constraints on interactions employed in nuclear structure calculations are discussed on the basis of the experimentally-obtained values for K_(infty) and K_(tau).
The isoscalar giant dipole resonance (ISGDR) has been investigated in 208Pb using inelastic scattering of 400 MeV alpha particles at forward angles, including 0deg. Using the superior capabilities of the Grand Raiden spectrometer, it has been possible to obtain spectra devoid of any "instrumental" background. The ISGDR strength distribution has been extracted from a multipole-composition of the observed spectra. The implication of these results on the experimental value of nuclear incompressibility are discussed.
"Background-free" spectra of inelastic $α$-particle scattering have been measured at a beam energy of 385 MeV in $^{90, 92}$Zr and $^{92}$Mo at extremely forward angles, including 0$^{\circ}$. The ISGMR strength distributions for the three nuclei coincide with each other, establishing clearly that nuclear incompressibility is not influenced by nuclear shell structure near $A\sim$90 as was claimed in recent measurements.

The compression-mode giant resonances, namely the isoscalar giant monopole and isoscalar giant dipole modes, are examples of collective nuclear motion. Their main interest stems from the fact that one hopes to extrapolate from their properties the incompressibility of uniform nuclear matter, which is a key parameter of the nuclear Equation of State (EoS). Our understanding of these issues has undergone two major jumps, one in the late 1970s when the Isoscalar Giant Monopole Resonance (ISGMR) was experimentally identified, and another around the turn of the millennium since when theory has been…
We have investigated the isoscalar giant monopole resonances (ISGMR) in $^{112-124}$Sn and $^{106-116}$Cd nuclei using inelastic scattering of 386-MeV $α$-particles at extremely forward angles, including 0$^\circ$. The strength distributions for various multipoles were extracted by a multipole decomposition analysis based on the expected angular distributions of the respective multipoles. From the ISGMR results, a value of $K_τ \sim -500$ MeV is obtained for the asymmetry term in the nuclear incompressibility.
We have investigated the isoscalar giant monopole resonance (GMR) in the Sn isotopes, using inelastic scattering of 400-MeV $α$-particles at extremely forward angles, including 0 deg. A value of -550 \pm 100 MeV has been obtained for the asymmetry term, $K_τ$, in the nuclear incompressibility.
The strength distributions of the giant monopole resonance (GMR) have been measured in the even-A Sn isotopes (A=112--124) with inelastic scattering of 400-MeV $α$ particles in the angular range $0^\circ$--$8.5^\circ$. We find that the experimentally-observed GMR energies of the Sn isotopes are lower than the values predicted by theoretical calculations that reproduce the GMR energies in $^{208}$Pb and $^{90}$Zr very well. From the GMR data, a value of $K_τ = -550 \pm 100$ MeV is obtained for the asymmetry-term in the nuclear incompressibility.
The isoscalar giant monopole resonance (ISGMR) in even-A Cd isotopes has been studied by inelastic $α$-scattering at 100 MeV/u and at extremely forward angles, including 0deg. The asymmetry term in the nuclear incompressibility extracted from the ISGMR in Cd isotopes is found to be $K_τ = -555 \pm 75$ MeV, confirming the value previously obtained from the Sn isotopes. ISGMR strength has been computed in relativistic RPA using NL3 and FSUGold effective interactions. Both models significantly overestimate the centroids of the ISGMR strength in the Cd isotopes. Combined with other recent theoreti…
Recent data on isoscalar giant monopole resonance (ISGMR) in the calcium isotopes $^{40,44,48}$Ca have suggested that $K_τ$, the asymmetry term in the nuclear incompressibility, has a positive value. A value of $K_τ> 0$ is entirely incompatible with present theoretical frameworks and, if correct, would have far-reaching implications on our understanding of myriad nuclear and astrophysical phenomena. This paper presents results of an independent ISGMR measurement with the $^{40,42,44,48}$Ca($α,α^\prime$) reaction at $E_α= 386$ MeV. These results conclusively discount the possibility of a positi…
Giant resonances are collective nuclear vibrations which provide a unique laboratory setting to probe the bulk properties of the nuclear force. One of the isoscalar compressional modes -- the isoscalar giant monopole resonance (ISGMR) -- is useful in constraining the equation of state (EoS) of nuclear matter. For example, the nuclear incompressibility, $K_\infty$, is a fundamental quantity in the EoS and is directly correlated with the energies of the ISGMR in finite nuclei. Previous work has shown that interactions with $K_\infty$ which reproduce the energies of the ISGMR in $^{208}$Pb and $^…
Two recent studies of the evolution of the isoscalar giant monopole resonance (ISGMR) within the calcium isotope chain report conflicting results. One study suggests that the monopole resonance energy, and thus the incompressibility of the nucleus $K_{A}$ increase with mass, which implies that $K_τ$, the asymmetry term in the nuclear incompressibility, has a positive value. The other study reports a weak decreasing trend of the energy moments, resulting in a generally accepted negative value for $K_τ$. An independent measurement of the central region of the ISGMR in the Ca isotope chain is pro…
We present an analysis based on the deformed Quasi Particle Random Phase Approximation, on top of a deformed Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov description of the ground state, aimed at studying the isoscalar monopole and quadrupole response in a deformed nucleus. This analysis is motivated by the need of understanding the coupling between the two modes and how it might affect the extraction of the nuclear incompressibility from the monopole distribution. After discussing this motivation, we present the main ingredients of our theoretical framework, and we show some results obtained with the SLy4 and SkM…
Background: In highly deformed nuclei, there is a noticeable coupling of the Isoscalar Giant Monopole Resonance (ISGMR) and the $K = 0$ component of the Isoscalar Giant Quadrupole Resonance (ISGQR), which results in a double peak structure of the isoscalar monopole (IS0) strength (a narrow low-energy deformation-induced peak and a main broad ISGMR part). The energy of the narrow low-lying IS0 peak is sensitive to both the incompressibility modulus $K_\infty$ and the coupling between IS0 and isoscalar quadrupole (IS2) strength. Objective: This study aims to investigate the two-peaked structure …
Using inelastic $α$-scattering at extremely forward angles, including $0^\circ$, the strength distributions of the isoscalar giant monopole resonance (ISGMR) have been measured in the $^{204,206,208}$Pb isotopes in order to examine the proposed mutually enhanced magicity (MEM) effect on the nuclear incompressibility. The MEM effect had been suggested as a likely explanation of the "softness" of nuclear incompressibility observed in the ISGMR measurements in the Sn and Cd isotopes. Our experimental results rule out any manifestation of the MEM effect in nuclear incompressibility and leave the q…
The isoscalar giant monopole resonance (GMR) has been investigated in a series of Sn isotopes (A=112--124) using inelstic scattering of 400-MeV alpha particles at extremely forward angles (including 0deg). The primary aim of the investigation has been to explore the role of the "symmetry-energy" term in the expression for nuclear incompressibility. It is found that the energies of the GMR in the Sn isotopes are significantly lower than those expected from the nuclear incompressibility previously extracted from the available data on the compressional-mode giant resonances.
Within a Bayesian statistical framework using the standard Skyrme-Hartree-Fock model, the maximum {\it a posteriori} (MAP) values and uncertainties of nuclear matter incompressibility and isovector interaction parameters are inferred from the experimental data of giant resonances and neutron-skin thicknesses of typical heavy nuclei. With the uncertainties of the isovector interaction parameters constrained by the data of the isovector giant dipole resonance and the neutron-skin thickness, we have obtained $K_0 = 223_{-8}^{+7}$ MeV at 68% confidence level using the data of the isoscalar giant m…
The saturation properties of neutron-rich matter are investigated in a relativistic mean-field formalism using two accurately calibrated models: NL3 and FSUGold. The saturation properties - density, binding energy per nucleon, and incompressibility coefficient - are calculated as a function of the neutron-proton asymmetry alpha=(N-Z)/A to all orders in alpha. Good agreement (at the 10% level or better) is found between these numerical calculations and analytic expansions that are given in terms of a handful of bulk parameters determined at saturation density. Using insights developed from the …
The recent RCNP $(α, α')$ data on the Isoscalar Giant Monopole Resonance (ISGMR) and Isoscalar Giant Quadrupole Resonance (ISGQR) in $^{92,94,96,98,100}$Mo are analyzed within a fully self-consistent Quasiparticle Random Phase Approximation (QRPA) approach with Skyrme interactions, in which pairing correlations and possible axial deformations are taken into account. The Skyrme sets SkM*, SLy6, SVbas and SkP$^δ$, that explore a diversity of nuclear matter properties, are used. We discuss the connection between the line shape of the monopole strength ISGMR and the deformation-induced coupling be…
The ``breathing mode'' of neutron-rich nuclei is our window into the incompressibility of neutron-rich matter. After much confusion on the interpretation of the experimental data, consistency was finally reached between different models that predicted both the distribution of isoscalar monopole strength in finite nuclei and the compression modulus of infinite matter. However, a very recent experiment on the Tin isotopes at the Research Center for Nuclear Physics(RCNP) in Japan has again muddled the waters. Self-consistent models that were successful in reproducing the energy of the giant monop…

Differences in the density dependence of the symmetry energy predicted by nonrelativistic and relativistic models are suggested, at least in part, as the culprit for the discrepancy in the values of the compression modulus of symmetric nuclear matter extracted from the energy of the giant monopole resonance in 208Pb. ``Best-fit'' relativistic models, with stiffer symmetry energies than Skyrme interactions, consistently predict higher compression moduli than nonrelativistic approaches. Relativistic models with compression moduli in the physically acceptable range of K=200-300 MeV are used to co…
The density dependence of nuclear symmetry energy is determined from a systematic study of the isospin dependent bulk properties of asymmetric nuclear matter using the isoscalar and the isovector components of density dependent M3Y interaction. The incompressibility $K_\infty$ for the symmetric nuclear matter, the isospin dependent part $K_{asy}$ of the isobaric incompressibility and the slope $L$ are all in excellent agreement with the constraints recently extracted from measured isotopic dependence of the giant monopole resonances in even-A Sn isotopes, from the neutron skin thickness of nuc…
Within the Time Dependent Hartree Fock (TDHF) approach, we investigate the impact of several ingredients of the nuclear effective interaction, such as incompressibility, symmetry energy, effective mass, derivative of the Lane potential and surface terms on the exit channel (fusion vs quasifission) observed in the reaction $^{238}$U+$^{40}$Ca, close to the Coulomb barrier. Our results show that all the ingredients listed above contribute to the competition between fusion and quasifission processes, however the leading role in determining the outcome of the reaction is played by incompressibilit…
The symmetry energy obtained with the effective Skyrme energy density functional is related to the values of isoscalar effective mass and isovector effective mass, which is also indirectly related to the incompressibility of symmetric nuclear matter. In this work, we analyze the values of symmetry energy and its related nuclear matter parameters in five-dimensional parameter space by describing the heavy ion collision data, such as isospin diffusion data at 35 MeV/u and 50 MeV/u, neutron skin of $^{208}$Pb, and tidal deformability and maximum mass of neutron star. We obtain the parameter sets …
Both the incompressibility \Ka of a finite nucleus of mass A and that ($K_{\infty}$) of infinite nuclear matter are fundamentally important for many critical issues in nuclear physics and astrophysics. While some consensus has been reached about the $K_{\infty}$, accurate theoretical predictions and experimental extractions of $K_τ$ characterizing the isospin dependence of \Ka have been very difficult. We propose a differential approach to extract the \Kt and \Ki independently from the \Ka data of any two nuclei in a given isotope chain. Applying this new method to the \Ka data from isoscalar …
We introduce a new relativistic energy density functional constrained by the ground state properties of atomic nuclei along with the isoscalar giant monopole resonance energy and dipole polarizability in $^{208}$Pb. A unified framework of the relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov model and random phase approximation based on the relativistic density-dependent point coupling interaction is established in order to determine the DD-PCX parameterization by $χ^2$ minimization. This procedure is supplemented with the co-variance analysis in order to estimate statistical uncertainties in the model paramete…
Bayesian analyses on both isoscalar and isovector nuclear interaction parameters are carried out based on the Korea-IBS-Daegu-SKKU (KIDS) model under the constraints of nuclear structure data of $^{208}$Pb and $^{120}$Sn. Under the constraint of the neutron-skin thickness, it is found that incorporating the curvature parameter $K_{sym}$ of nuclear symmetry energy as an independent variable significantly broadens the posterior probability distribution function (PDF) of the slope parameter $L$, and affects the related correlations. Typically, the anticorrelation between $L$ and the symmetry ener…
Isoscalar giant resonances, being the archetypal forms of collective nuclear behavior, have been studied extensively for decades with the goal of constraining bulk nuclear properties of the equation of state, as well as for modeling dynamical behaviors within stellar environments. An important such mode is the isoscalar electric giant monopole resonance (ISGMR) that can be understood as a radially symmetric density vibration within the saturated nuclear volume. The field has a few key open questions, which have been proposed and remain unresolved. One of the more provocative questions is the e…
Analytical expressions for the saturation density as well as the binding energy and incompressibility at the saturation density of asymmetric nuclear matter are given exactly up to 4th-order in the isospin asymmetry delta =(rho_n - rho_p)/rho using 11 characteristic parameters defined at the normal nuclear density rho_0. Using an isospin- and momentum-dependent modified Gogny (MDI) interaction and the SHF approach with 63 popular Skyrme interactions, we have systematically studied the isospin dependence of the saturation properties of asymmetric nuclear matter, particularly the incompressibili…
We have constructed a Lagrangian model (SIG-OM) with coupling of sigma and omega mesons in the relativistic mean-field theory. Properties of finite nuclei and nuclear matter have been explored with the new Lagrangian model. The study shows that with SIG-OM an excellent description of binding energies and charge radii of nuclei over a large range of isospin is achieved. With an incompressibility of nuclear matter K=265 MeV, it is also able to describe the breathing-mode isoscalar giant monopole resonance energies appropriately. It is shown that the high-density behaviour of the equation of stat…
In this new era of radioactive beam facilities, the discovery of novel modes of excitation in nuclei far away from stability represents an area of intense research activity. In addition, these modes of excitation appear to be sensitive to the uncertain density dependence of the symmetry energy. We study the emergence, evolution, and nature of both the soft and giant isoscalar monopole modes as a function of neutron excess in three unstable Nickel isotopes: 56Ni, 68Ni, and 78Ni. The distribution of isoscalar monopole strength is computed in a relativistic random-phase approximation using severa…
The breathing-mode isoscalar giant monopole resonance (GMR) is investigated using the generator coordinate method within the relativistic mean-field (RMF) theory. Employing the Lagrangian models of the nonlinear-$σ$ model (NL$σ$), the scalar-vector interaction model (SVI) and the $σ$-$ω$ coupling model (SIGO), we show that each Lagrangian model exhibits a distinctly different GMR response. Consequently, Lagrangian models yield a different value of the GMR energy for a given value of the nuclear matter incompressibility $K_\infty$. It is shown that this effect arises largely from a different va…
The isoscalar monopole response of neutron-rich nuclei is sensitive to both the incompressibility coefficient of symmetric nuclear matter and the density dependence of the symmetry energy. The main goal of this paper is to explore the emergence, evolution, and origin of low energy monopole strength along the even-even calcium isotopes: from 40Ca to 60Ca. The distribution of isoscalar monopole strength is computed in a relativistic random phase approximation (RPA) using three effective interactions that have been calibrated to the properties of finite nuclei and neutron stars. A non-spectral ap…
With a newly improved isospin- and momentum-dependent interaction and an isospin-dependent Boltzmann-Uehling-Uhlenbeck transport model, we have investigated the effects of the slope parameter $L$ of the nuclear symmetry energy and the isospin splitting of the nucleon effective mass $m_{n-p}^*=(m_n^*-m_p^*)/m$ on the centroid energy of the isovector giant dipole resonance and the electric dipole polarizability in $^{208}$Pb. With the isoscalar nucleon effective mass $m_s^*=0.7m$ constrained by the empirical optical potential, we obtain a constraint of $L=64.29\pm11.84 (\rm MeV)$ and $m_{n-p}^*=…
Accurately calibrated (or ``best fit'') relativistic mean-field models are used to compute the distribution of isoscalar monopole strength in 90Zr and 208Pb, and the isovector dipole strength in 208Pb using a continuum random-phase-approximation approach. It is shown that the distribution of isoscalar monopole strength in 208Pb--but not in 90Zr--is sensitive to the density dependence of the symmetry energy. This sensitivity hinders the extraction of the compression modulus of symmetric nuclear matter from the isoscalar giant monopole resonance (ISGMR) in 208Pb. Thus, one relies on 90Zr, a nucl…
Giant multipole resonances in Nd and Sm isotopes are studied by employing the quasiparticle-random-phase approximation on the basis of the Skyrme energy-density-functional method. Deformation effects on giant resonances are investigated in these isotopes which manifest a typical nuclear shape change from spherical to prolate shapes. The peak energy, the broadening, and the deformation splitting of the isoscalar giant monopole (ISGMR) and quadrupole (ISGQR) resonances agree well with measurements. The magnitude of the peak splitting and the fraction of the energy-weighted strength in the lower …
Based on microscopic Hartree-Fock + random phase approximation calculations with Skyrme interactions, we study the correlations between the nuclear breathing mode energy $E_{ISGMR}$ and properties of asymmetric nuclear matter with a recently developed analysis method. Our results indicate that the $E_{ISGMR}$ of $^{208}$Pb exhibits moderate correlations with the density slope $L$ of the symmetry energy and the isoscalar nucleon effective mass $m_{s,0}^{\ast}$ besides a strong dependence on the incompressibility $K_{0}$ of symmetric nuclear matter. Using the present empirical values of $L=60\pm…

We calculate the properties of isospin-asymmetric nuclear matter based on chiral nucleon-nucleon (NN) and three-nucleon (3N) interactions. To this end, we develop an improved normal-ordering framework that allows to include general 3N interactions starting from a plane-wave partial-wave-decomposed form. We present results for the energy per particle for general isospin asymmetries based on a set of different Hamiltonians, study their saturation properties, the incompressibility, symmetry energy, and also provide an analytic parametrization for the energy per particle as a function of density a…
Giant resonances encapsulate the dynamic response of the nuclear ground state to external perturbations. As such, they offer a unique view of the nucleus that is often not accessible otherwise. Although interesting in their own right, giant resonances are also enormously valuable in providing stringent constraints on the equation of state of asymmetric matter. We this view in mind, we focus on two modes of excitation that are essential in reaching this goal: the isoscalar giant monopole resonance (GMR) and the isovector giant dipole resonance (GDR). GMR energies in heavy nuclei are sensitive t…
A mean field calculation is carried out to obtain the equation of state (EoS) of nuclear matter from a density dependent M3Y interaction (DDM3Y). The energy per nucleon is minimized to obtain ground state of the symmetric nuclear matter (SNM). The constants of density dependence of the effective interaction are obtained by reproducing the saturation energy per nucleon and the saturation density of SNM. The energy variation of the exchange potential is treated properly in the negative energy domain of nuclear matter. The EoS of SNM, thus obtained, is not only free from the superluminosity probl…
Within nuclear thermodynamics and an isospin-dependent transport model we investigate respective roles of the nuclear mean field and the 2-body stochastic scattering on the evolution of density and isospin fluctuations in either mechanically or chemically unstable regions of neutron-rich matter. It is found that the mean field dominates overwhelmingly the fast growth of both fluctuations, while the 2-body scattering influences significantly the later growth of the isospin fluctuation only. Moreover, both fluctuations grow in mechanically unstable systems, while only the density fluctuation gro…
The bulk parameters characterizing the energy of symmetric nuclear matter and the symmetry energy defined at normal nuclear density $ρ_0 $ provide important information on the equation of state (EOS) of isospin asymmetric nuclear matter. While significant progress has been made in determining some lower order bulk characteristic parameters, such as the energy $E_0(ρ_0)$ and incompressibility $K_0$ of symmetric nuclear matter as well as the symmetry energy $E_{sym}(ρ_0)$ and its slope parameter $L$, yet the higher order bulk characteristic parameters are still poorly known. Here, we analyze the…
Based on mean field calculations with Skyrme interactions, we extract a constraint on the isovector effective mass in nuclear matter at saturation density $ρ_0$, i.e., $m_{v}^{\ast}(ρ_0)=(0.77\pm0.03) m$ by combining the experimental data of the centroid energy of the isovector giant dipole resonance (IVGDR) and the electric dipole polarizability $α_{\mathrm{D}}$ in $^{208}$Pb. Meanwhile, the isoscalar effective mass at $ρ_0$ is determined to be $m_{s}^{\ast}(ρ_0)=(0.91\pm0.05) m$ by analyzing the measured excitation energy of the isoscalar giant quadrupole resonance (ISGQR) in $^{208}$Pb. Fro…
Spin-isospin transitions in nuclei away from the valley of stability are essential for the description of astrophysically relevant weak interaction processes. While they remain mainly beyond the reach of experiment, theoretical modeling provides important insight into their properties. In order to describe the spin-isospin response, vcthe proton-neutron relativistic quasiparticle random phase approximation (PN-RQRPA) is formulated using the relativistic density-dependent point coupling interaction, and separable pairing interaction in both the $T=1$ and $T=0$ pairing channels. By implementing r…
Nuclear systems under constraints, with high degrees of symmetries and/or collectivities may be considered as moving effectively in spaces with reduced spatial dimensions. We first derive analytical expressions for the nucleon specific energy $E_0(ρ)$, pressure $P_0(ρ)$, incompressibility coefficient $K_0(ρ)$ and skewness coefficient $J_0(ρ)$ of symmetric nucleonic matter (SNM), the quadratic symmetry energy $E_{\rm{sym}}(ρ)$, its slope parameter $L(ρ)$ and curvature coefficient $K_{\rm{sym}}(ρ)$ as well as the fourth-order symmetry energy $E_{\rm{sym,4}}(ρ)$ of neutron-rich matter in general …
We propose a high-statistics measurement of few body nuclear structure and short range correlations in quasi-elastic scattering at 6.6 GeV from $^2$H, $^3$He and $^3$H targets in Hall B with the CLAS12 detector. We will measure absolute cross sections for $(e,e'p)$ and $(e,e'pN)$ quasi-elastic reaction channels up to a missing momentum $p_{miss} \approx 1$ GeV/c over a wide range of $Q^2$ and $x_B$ and construct the isoscalar sum of $^3$H and $^3$He. We will compare $(e,e'p)$ cross sections to nuclear theory predictions using a wide variety of techniques and $NN$ interactions in order to const…
Within the nonlinear relativistic mean field model, we derive the analytical expression of the nuclear matter fourth-order symmetry energy $E_{sym,4}(ρ)$. Based on two accurately calibrated interactions FSUGold and IU-FSU, our results show that the value of $E_{sym,4}(ρ)$ at normal nuclear matter density $ρ_{0}$ is generally less than 1 MeV, confirming the empirical parabolic approximation to the equation of state for asymmetric nuclear matter at $ρ_{0}$. On the other hand, we find that the $E_{sym,4}(ρ)$ may become nonnegligible at high densities. Furthermore, the analytical form of the $E_{s…
