We propose a high-statistics measurement of few body nuclear structure and short range correlations in quasi-elastic scattering at 6.6 GeV from $^2$H, $^3$He and $^3$H targets in Hall B with the CLAS12 detector.
We will measure absolute cross sections for $(e,e'p)$ and $(e,e'pN)$ quasi-elastic reaction channels up to a missing momentum $p_{miss} \approx 1$ GeV/c over a wide range of $Q^2$ and $x_B$ and construct the isoscalar sum of $^3$H and $^3$He. We will compare $(e,e'p)$ cross sections to nuclear theory predictions using a wide variety of techniques and $NN$ interactions in order to constrain the $NN$ interaction at short distances. We will measure $(e,e'pN)$ quasi-elastic reaction cross sections and $(e,e'pN)/(e,e'p)$ ratios to understand short range correlated (SRC) $NN$ pairs in the simplest non-trivial system. $^3$H and $^3$He, being mirror nuclei, exploit the maximum available isospin asymmetry. They are light enough that their ground states are readily calculable, but they already exhibit complex nuclear behavior, including $NN$ SRCs. We will also measure $^2$H$(e,e'p)$ in order to help theorists constrain non-quasielastic reaction mechanisms in order to better calculate reactions on $A=3$ nuclei. Measuring all three few body nuclei together is critical, in order to understand and minimize different reaction effects, such as single charge exchange final state interactions, in order to test ground-state nuclear models.
We will also measure the ratio of inclusive $(e,e')$ quasi-elastic cross sections (integrated over $x_B$) from $^3$He and $^3$H in order to extract the neutron magnetic form factor $G_M^n$ at small and moderate values of $Q^2$. We will measure this at both 6.6 GeV and 2.2 GeV.
Over the last three decades, Hall C has been a key contributor to progress in the understanding of hadron structure and interactions. An outline of a potential future Hall C physics program focused on precision measurements of small cross sections is presented. A detailed overview of this unique facility, whose flexible configuration allows many opportunities for new experimental equipment that help address a wide range of questions in hadronic physics, is included as well.
The measurement of the mass differences for systems bound by the strong force has reached a very high precision with protons and anti-protons. The extension of such measurement from (anti-)baryons to (anti-)nuclei allows one to probe any difference in the interactions between nucleons and anti-nucleons encoded in the (anti-)nuclei masses. This force is a remnant of the underlying strong interaction among quarks and gluons and can be described by effective theories, but cannot yet be directly derived from quantum chromodynamics. Here we report a measurement of the difference between the ratios …
We report on high-precision $Q_{\textrm{EC}}$ values of the $^{21}$Na$\rightarrow^{21}$Ne and $^{23}$Mg$\rightarrow^{23}$Na mirror $β$-transitions from mass measurements with ISOLTRAP at ISOLDE/CERN. A precision of $δm/m = 9 \cdot 10^{-10}$ and $δm/m = 1.5 \cdot 10^{-9}$ was reached for the masses of $^{21}$Na and $^{23}$Mg, respectively. We reduce the uncertainty of the $Q_{\textrm{EC}}$ values by a factor five, making them the most precise experimental input data for the calculation of the corrected $\mathcal{F} t$-value of these mixed Fermi/Gamow-Teller transitions. For the $^{21}$Na$\right…
We present the first example of a rigorous uncertainty quantification on elastic Nucleus-Nucleus scattering at energies near the Coulomb barrier. Experimental data has been analyzed using an energy dependent effective optical model potential with physical constraints imposed. We confirm the compatibility of these uncertainties with the well known Coulomb threshold anomaly, explained in terms of a dispersive relation, and contrast our results with previous analyses that suggest otherwise.
The Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF) was built with a thermionic electron source and the three original experimental hall lines reflected this. A few years after beam delivery began a parity violation experiment was approved and two polarimeters were installed in the Hall A beam line without consultation with the accelerator physics group. The beam raster system was placed after the new Compton polarimeter, before one accelerator quadrupole and four quadrupoles in the new Moller polarimeter. It was very difficult to meet experimental requirements on envelope functions and …
The open question of where, when, and how the heavy elements beyond iron enrich our Universe has triggered a new era in nuclear physics studies.\ Of all the relevant nuclear physics inputs, the mass of very neutron-rich nuclides is a key quantity for revealing the origin of heavy elements beyond iron.\ Although the precise determination of this property is a great challenge, enormous progress has been made in recent decades, and it has contributed significantly to both nuclear structure and astrophysical nucleosynthesis studies.\ In this review, we first survey our present knowledge of the nuc…

A novel technique for broadband high-precision mass measurements of short-lived exotic nuclides is reported. It is based on the isochronous mass spectrometry (IMS) and realizes simultaneous determinations of revolution time and velocity of short-lived stored ions at the cooler storage ring CSRe in Lanzhou. The new technique, named as the $Bρ$-defined IMS or $Bρ$-IMS, boosts the efficiency, sensitivity, and accuracy of mass measurements, and is applied here to measure masses of neutron-deficient $fp$-shell nuclides. In a single accelerator setting, masses of $^{46}$Cr, $^{50}$Fe and $^{54}$Ni a…
We present an overview of Short-Range Correlations (SRC) studies using the inclusive measurement of the electron scattering off nuclei. A brief introduction of the origin of the SRC is given, followed by the survey of the two-nucleon SRC (2N-SRC) study and its interesting connection to the EMC effect. A discussion of the three-nucleon SRC study (3N-SRC) measured by the Jefferson Lab's Hall B and Hall C experiments which showed contradictory results is given and, most importantly, we report a new result from the Hall A E08-014 experiment which was dedicated on studying 3N-SRC. Our high precisio…
High-precision mass measurements of $^{63}$Cu, $^{64-66}$Zn, $^{65}$Ga, $^{65-67}$Ge, $^{67}$As, $^{78,81}$Br, $^{80}$Rb, and $^{79}$Sr were performed utilizing a multireflection time-of-flight mass spectrograph combined with the gas-filled recoil ion separator GARIS-II. In the case of $^{65}$Ga, a mass uncertainty of 2.1 keV, corresponding to a relative precision of $δm / m = 3.5\times10^{-8}$, was obtained and the mass value is in excellent agreement with the 2016 Atomic Mass Evaluation. For $^{67}$Ge and $^{81}$Br, where masses were previously deduced through indirect measurements, discrepa…
High-precision knowledge of electromagnetic form factors of nuclei is a subject of much current experimental and theoretical activity in nuclear and atomic physics. Such precision mandates that effects of the non-zero spatial extent of the constituent nucleons be handled in a manner that goes beyond the usual impulse approximation. A series of simple, Poincare-invariant, composite-proton models that respect the Ward-Takahashi identity and in which quarks are confined are used to study the validity of this approximation. The result of all of the models is a general theorem showing that medium m…
We present a model-independent approach to electric quadrupole transitions of deformed nuclei. Based on an effective theory for axially symmetric systems, the leading interactions with electromagnetic fields enter as minimal couplings to gauge potentials, while subleading corrections employ gauge-invariant non-minimal couplings. This approach yields transition operators that are consistent with the Hamiltonian, and the power counting of the effective theory provides us with theoretical uncertainty estimates. We successfully test the effective theory in homonuclear molecules that exhibit a larg…
E12-14-009: We propose to extract the ratio of the electric form factor (G_E) of 3He and 3H from the measured ratio of the elastic-scattering cross sections at E_beam = 1.1 GeV. Measurements at low Q^2 ( < 0.1 GeV^2) will allow accurate extraction of G_E with minimal contributions from the magnetic form factor (G_M) and Coulomb corrections. From this data we will extract the difference between the charge radii for 3He and 3H. This short experiment, 1.5 days, will utilize the left Hall A high resolution spectrometer and the one-time availability of a 1 kCi tritium target at Jefferson Lab which …
This article reviews our present knowledge of neutrino interactions with nucleons and discusses the interactions with nuclei, the target material of all presently running and planned long-baseline experiments. I emphasize descriptions of semi-inclusive reactions and full descriptions of the final state; the latter are needed to reconstruct the incoming neutrino energy from final-state observations. I then discuss Monte Carlo generator and more advanced transport theoretical approaches in connection with experimental results on various reaction mechanisms. Finally, I describe the effects of unc…
Atomic masses of seven $T_z=-1$, $fp$-shell nuclei from $^{44}$V to $^{56}$Cu and two low-lying isomers, $^{44m}$V ($J^π=6^+$) and $^{52m}$Co ($J^π=2^+$), have been measured with relative precisions of $1-4\times 10^{-7}$ with Isochronous Mass Spectrometry (IMS) at CSRe. The masses of $^{56}$Cu, $^{52g,52m}$Co, and $^{44m}$V were measured for the first time in this experiment. The Mass Excesses ($ME^{\prime}$s) of $^{44}$V, $^{48}$Mn, $^{50}$Fe, and $^{54}$Ni are determined with an order of magnitude improved precision compared to the literature values. $^{52g,52m}$Co and $^{56}$Cu are found t…

We have been testing the theory used to calculate internal-conversion coefficients (ICCs) by making a series of measurements of alpha_K values with precision better than +/-2%. So far we have measured E3 transitions in three nuclei, 103Rh, 111Cd and 134Cs; and M4 transitions in six nuclei, 119Sn, 125Te, 127Te, 137Ba, 193Ir and 197Pt. Together, these span a wide range of A and Z values. In all cases, the results strongly favor Dirac-Fock calculations in which the final-state electron wave function has been computed in an atomic field that includes the vacancy created by the internal-conversion …
Multiple high precision $β$-decay measurements are being carried out these days on various nuclei, in search of beyond the Standard Model signatures. These measurements necessitate accurate standard model theoretical predictions to be compared with. Motivated by the experimental surge, we present a formalism for such a calculation of $β$-decay observables, with controlled accuracy, based on a perturbative analysis of the theoretical observables related to the phenomena, including high order nuclear recoil and shape corrections. The accuracy of the corrections is analyzed by identifying a hiera…
New polarization potentials have been determined based on: 1) the latest photo-neutron cross section evaluation and a missing factor of two in previous work, and 2) the mass dependency of the symmetry energy, $a_{sym}(A)$. The magnitude of the first one is 35\% stronger than the currently accepted polarization potential. The second one opens up the possibility for a parameter-free polarization potential. Both polarization potentials are essentially the same for heavy nuclei. The polarization effect on quadrupole collectivity is more substantial than previously assumed for light nuclei. Particu…

We show that the charge radii of neighboring atomic nuclei, independent of atomic number and charge, follow remarkably very simple relations, despite the fact that atomic nuclei are complex finite many-body systems governed by the laws of quantum mechanics. These relations can be understood within the picture of independent-particle motion and by assuming neighboring nuclei having similar pattern in the charge density distribution. A root-mean-square (rms) deviation of 0.0078 fm is obtained between the predictions in these relations and the experimental values, i.e., a comparable precision as …
We introduce a new experimental effort at Jefferson Lab (JLab) to precisely measure the ratios of charged pion electroproduction in Semi-Inclusive Deep Inelastic Scattering (SIDIS) from $^2$D, $^3$He, and $^3$H targets \cite{c12-21-004}. This conditionally approved experiment (C12-21-004) aims to run in Hall-B using the standard CLAS12 configuration and a new target system developed for the approved quasi-elastic experiment (E12-20-005). In this data-driven study, we will measure the cross-sections as a function of ($x$, $Q^2$, $z$, $P_T$) to allow the extraction of the unpolarized parton dist…
What is the origin of nuclear clustering and how does it emerge from the nuclear interaction? While there is ample experimental evidence for this phenomenon, its theoretical characterization directly from nucleons as degrees of freedom remains a challenge, making it difficult to improve nuclear forces using clustering observables. In this work, a simple ratio of energies based on effective scale arguments is proposed to assess the quality of nuclear forces on alpha clustering (${ {}^{4}\text{He} }$) in bound and narrow ground-state nuclei. The proposed clustering ratio is parameter-free and co…
The complex nature of the nuclear forces generates a broad range and diversity of observational phenomena. Heavy nuclei, though orders of magnitude less massive than neutron stars, are governed by the same underlying physics, which is enshrined in the nuclear equation of state. Heavy nuclei are expected to develop a neutron-rich skin where many neutrons collect near the surface. Such a skin thickness is strongly sensitive to the poorly-known density dependence of the symmetry energy near saturation density. An accurate and model-independent determination of the neutron-skin thickness of heavy …
We discuss the prospects of using jets as precision probes in electron-nucleus collisions at the future Electron-Ion Collider. Jets produced in deep-inelastic scattering can be calibrated by a measurement of the scattered electron. Such electron-jet "tag and probe" measurements call for an approach that is orthogonal to most HERA jet measurements as well as previous studies of jets at the future EIC. We present observables such as the electron-jet momentum balance, azimuthal correlations and jet substructure, which can provide constraints on the parton transport coefficient in nuclei. We compa…
