Among the allowed representations of extended supersymmetry in six dimensions there are exotic chiral multiplets that, instead of a graviton, contain mixed-symmetry spin-2 tensor fields. Notably, an $\mathcal{N}=(4,0)$ multiplet has a four index exotic graviton and it was conjectured that an interacting theory based on this multiplet could arise as a strong coupling limit of M theory compactified on $T^6$. We present an algebraic study of these multiplets and their possible embedding into the framework of exceptional field theory, finding in particular that the six-dimensional momenta do not correspond to a conventional spacetime section. When compactified on a circle, the six-dimensional multiplets give rise to the same degrees of freedom as five-dimensional supergravity theories with the same number of supersymmetries. However, by considering anomalies (computed using the product multiplets construction) and the generation of Chern-Simons couplings, we find reason to doubt that their dynamics will agree with the five-dimensional gravity theories. We propose an alternative picture, similar to F-theory, in which particular fixed-volume $T^3$-fibered spacetimes play a central role, suggesting that only on compactification to three-dimensions will one make contact with the dynamics of supergravity.
Effective Symmetries of the Minimal Supermultiplet of N = 8 Extended Worldline Supersymmetry
N = 8扩展世界线超对称的最小表示,称为“超多重态”,与具有相同E(8)色拓扑的超多重态家族密切相关。我们对它们的有效对称性进行了分类,并找到了它们共有的一个Spin(4)x Z(2)子群,这解释了原始构造中使用的特殊基。我们指定一个受约束的超多重态超多重态家庭的超场表示,并表明,这样的超场表示实际上存在的所有adinkraic超多重态。我们还展示了这些超多重态、它们的Adinkras和E(8)根格基之间的对应关系。最后,我们构建了二次拉格朗日函数,提供了标准的动力学项,并提供了一个混合的偶数个这样的超多重态控制耦合到外部2-形式的通量。
We extend our exploration of nonstandard continuum quantum field theories in 2+1 dimensions to 3+1 dimensions. These theories exhibit exotic global symmetries, a peculiar spectrum of charged states, unusual gauge symmetries, and surprising dualities. Many of the systems we study have a known lattice construction. In particular, one of them is a known gapless fracton model. The novelty here is in their continuum field theory description. In this paper, we focus on models with a global $U(1)$ symmetry and in a followup paper we will study models with a global $\mathbb{Z}_N$ symmetry.
We discuss nonstandard continuum quantum field theories in 2+1 dimensions. They exhibit exotic global symmetries, a subtle spectrum of charged excitations, and dualities similar to dualities of systems in 1+1 dimensions. These continuum models represent the low-energy limits of certain known lattice systems. One key aspect of these continuum field theories is the important role played by discontinuous field configurations. In two companion papers, we will present 3+1-dimensional versions of these systems. In particular, we will discuss continuum quantum field theories of some models of fracton…
Following our earlier analyses of nonstandard continuum quantum field theories, we study here gapped systems in 3+1 dimensions, which exhibit fractonic behavior. In particular, we present three dual field theory descriptions of the low-energy physics of the X-cube model. A key aspect of our constructions is the use of discontinuous fields in the continuum field theory. Spacetime is continuous, but the fields are not.
We present a novel approach to classify supersymmetric effective field theories (EFTs) whose scattering amplitudes exhibit enhanced soft limits. These enhancements arise due to non-linearly realised symmetries on the Goldstone modes of such EFTs and we classify the algebras that these symmetries can form. Our main focus is on so-called exceptional algebras which lead to field-dependent transformation rules and EFTs with the maximum possible soft enhancement at a given derivative power counting. We adapt existing techniques for Poincaré invariant theories to the supersymmetric case, and introdu…
We investigate a family of invertible phases of matter with higher-dimensional exotic excitations in even spacetime dimensions, which includes and generalizes the Kitaev's chain in 1+1d. The excitation has $\mathbb{Z}_2$ higher-form symmetry that mixes with the spacetime Lorentz symmetry to form a higher group spacetime symmetry. We focus on the invertible exotic loop topological phase in 3+1d. This invertible phase is protected by the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ one-form symmetry and the time-reversal symmetry, and has surface thermal Hall conductance not realized in conventional time-reversal symmetric o…
We present a prescription in F-theory for realizing matter in "exotic" representations of product gauge groups. For 6D vacua, bifundamental hypermultiplets are engineered by starting at a singular point in moduli space which includes 6D superconformal field theories coupled to gravity. A deformation in Higgs branch moduli space takes us to a weakly coupled gauge theory description. In the corresponding elliptically fibered Calabi--Yau threefold, the minimal Weierstrass model parameters $(f,g,Δ)$ vanish at collisions of the discriminant at least to order $(4,6,12)$, but with sufficiently high o…
Extended field theories (ExFTs) are a relatively young class of theories that lie at the intersection of Kaluza-Klein theory and the remarkable dualities of string- and M-theory. Whereas the original Kaluza-Klein construction unified the local symmetries of an Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton theory into diffeomorphisms in one dimension higher, ExFTs aim for a much more ambitious goal: to unify the local symmetries of supergravity fields into a single symmetry manifest on a higher-dimensional space. Depending on whether we start with Type II or 11-dimensional supergravity, we obtain double and excepti…
We show that the Extended Bargmann and Newton-Hooke algebras in 2+1 dimensions can be obtained as expansions of the Nappi-Witten algebra. The result can be generalized to obtain two infinite families of non-relativistic symmetries, which include the Maxwellian Exotic Bargmann symmetry, its generalized Newton-Hooke counterpart, and its Hietarinta dual. In each case, the invariant bilinear form on the Nappi-Witten algebra leads to the invariant tensor on the expanded algebra, allowing one to construct the corresponding Chern-Simons gravity theory.
The emerging study of fractons, a new type of quasi-particle with restricted mobility, has motivated the construction of several classes of interesting continuum quantum field theories with novel properties. One such class consists of foliated field theories which, roughly, are built by coupling together fields supported on the leaves of foliations of spacetime. Another approach, which we refer to as exotic field theory, focuses on constructing Lagrangians consistent with special symmetries (like subsystem symmetries) that are adjacent to fracton physics. A third framework is that of infinite-…
We continue our exploration of exotic, gapless lattice and continuum field theories with subsystem global symmetries. In an earlier paper, we presented free lattice models enjoying all the global symmetries (except continuous translations), dualities, and anomalies of the continuum theories. Here, we study in detail the relation between the lattice models and the corresponding continuum theories. We do that by analyzing the spectrum of the theories and several correlation functions. These lead us to uncover interesting subtleties in the way the continuum limit can be taken. In particular, in s…
We reformulate known exotic theories (including theories of fractons) on a Euclidean spacetime lattice. We write them using the Villain approach and then we modify them to a convenient range of parameters. The new lattice models are closer to the continuum limit than the original lattice versions. In particular, they exhibit many of the recently found properties of the continuum theories including emergent global symmetries and surprising dualities. Also, these new models provide a clear and rigorous formulation to the continuum models and their singularities. In appendices, we use this approa…
We introduce a first order description of linearized non-minimal ($n=-1$) supergravity in superspace, using the unconstrained prepotential superfield instead of the conventionally constrained super one forms. In this description, after integrating out the connection-like auxiliary superfield of first-order formalism, the superspace action is expressed in terms of a single superfield which combines the prepotential and compensator superfields. We use this description to construct the supersymmetric cubic interaction vertex $3/2-3/2-1/2$ which describes the electromagnetic interaction between tw…
We continue the exploration of nonstandard continuum field theories related to fractons in 3+1 dimensions. Our theories exhibit exotic global and gauge symmetries, defects with restricted mobility, and interesting dualities. Depending on the model, the defects are the probe limits of either fractonic particles, strings, or strips. One of our models is the continuum limit of the plaquette Ising lattice model, which features an important role in the construction of the X-cube model.
We discuss a new realization of $\mathcal{N}$-extended quantum-mechanical supersymmetry (QM SUSY) with central charges hidden in the four-dimensional (4D) mass spectrum of higher dimensional Dirac action with curved extra dimensions. We show that this $\mathcal{N}$-extended QM SUSY results from symmetries in extra dimensions, and the supermultiplets in this supersymmetry algebra correspond to the Bogomol'nyi--Prasad--Sommerfield states. Furthermore, we examine the model of the $S^2$ extra dimension with a magnetic monopole background and confirm that the $\mathcal{N}$-extended QM SUSY explains…
We consider holomorphic twists of arbitrary supersymmetric theories in four dimensions. Working in the BV formalism, we rederive classical results characterizing the holomorphic twist of chiral and vector supermultiplets, computing the twist explicitly as a family over the space of nilpotent supercharges in minimal supersymmetry. The BV formalism allows one to work with or without auxiliary fields, according to preference; for chiral superfields, we show that the result of the twist is an identical BV theory, the holomorphic $βγ$ system with superpotential, independent of whether or not auxili…
