Extended field theories (ExFTs) are a relatively young class of theories that lie at the intersection of Kaluza-Klein theory and the remarkable dualities of string- and M-theory. Whereas the original Kaluza-Klein construction unified the local symmetries of an Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton theory into diffeomorphisms in one dimension higher, ExFTs aim for a much more ambitious goal: to unify the local symmetries of supergravity fields into a single symmetry manifest on a higher-dimensional space. Depending on whether we start with Type II or 11-dimensional supergravity, we obtain double and exceptional field theory respectively which we collectively refer to as ExFTs. At the cost of being forced into a generalised notion of diffeomorphisms that fail to close onto an algebra, ExFTs embody a powerful paradigm built on the idea of unification-of symmetries, of fields and of solutions.
However, ExFTs are much more than just a rewriting of supergravities. They have been found to contain much more than was originally put into their construction and, in this thesis, we discuss some of the more exotic aspects of these theories. We describe a novel solution in exceptional field theory that unifies a whole family of so-called 'exotic branes' into a single solution on the extended space. We follow this with the construction of a maximally non-Riemannian solution whose reduction to the usual spacetime is free of the scalar moduli that typically plague dimensional reductions. In the final part, we consider reductions between exceptional field theories and illustrate, amongst other things, that we can have ExFTs defined on local patches that nevertheless cannot be related by even the duality transformations of the lower-dimensional theory.
We investigate string-phenomenological questions of Hull's exotic superstring theories with Euclidean strings/branes and multiple times. These are known to be plagued by pathologies like the occurrence of ghosts. On the other hand, these theories exhibit de Sitter solutions. Our special focus lies on the question of the coexistence of such de Sitter solutions and ghost-free brane worlds. To this end, the world-sheet CFT description of Euclidean fundamental strings is generalized to include also the open string/D-brane sector. Demanding that in the "observable" gauge theory sector the gauge fie…
We construct non-standard interactions between exterior form gauge fields by gauging a particular global symmetry of the Einstein-Maxwell action for such fields. Furthermore we discuss generalizations of such interactions by adding couplings to gravitational Chern-Simons forms and to fields arising through dimensional reduction. The construction uses an appropriate tensor calculus.
In the reduction of 4d dualities to 3d there are non-perturbative effects arising from monopoles acting as instantons. This mechanism has been reproduced in string theory by engineering the theories in a IIA brane setup. Nevertheless there are limiting cases of the 4d dualities where the dual theories are actually confined phases of the UV gauge theories. In these cases the monopoles are absent and the mechanism of reduction of the 4d duality has to be modified. In this paper we investigate such modification in the brane setup. The main observation behind our analysis is that in the 4d case th…
A new type of tensionless superstring theory, called the Inhomogeneous tensionless superstring, has been recently introduced. This is characterised by a residual symmetry algebra on the worldsheet richer in structure than the previously known symmetry algebra related to Homogeneous tensionless superstring. In this paper, we investigate theories of tensile superstring that the Inhomogeneous tensionless superstring with manifestly real fermions could arise from. We provide two different candidates for these parent tensile theories. The nature of the limit dictates that these theories have some e…
We construct world-volume effective actions of exotic $5^2_2$-branes in type IIA and IIB string theories. The effective actions are given in fully space-time covariant forms with two Killing vectors associated with background isometries. The effective theories are governed by the six-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=(2,0)$ tensor multiplet and $\mathcal{N}=(1,1)$ vector multiplet, respectively. Performing the S-duality transformation to the $5^2_2$-brane effective action in type IIB string theory, we also work out the world-volume action of the $5^2_3$-brane. We discuss some additional issues relevant…
The absence of exotics is a conjectural property of the spectrum of BPS states of four--dimensional $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetric QFT's. In this letter we revisit the precise statement of this conjecture, and develop a general strategy that, if applicable, entails the absence of exotic BPS states. Our method is based on the Coulomb branch formula and on quiver mutations. In particular, we obtain the absence of exotic BPS states for all pure SYM theories with simple simply--laced gauge group $G$, and, as a corollary, of infinitely many other lagrangian $\mathcal{N}=2$ theories.
We compute the partition functions of D(-1)D7 systems describing the multi-instanton dynamics of SO(N) gauge theories in eight dimensions. This is the simplest instance of the so called exotic instantons. In analogy with the Seiberg-Witten theory in four space-time dimensions, the prepotential and correlators in the chiral ring are derived via localization formulas and found to satisfy relations of the Matone type. Exotic prepotentials of SO(N) gauge theories with N=2 supersymmetries in four-dimensions are also discussed.
We investigate exotic supergravity theories in 6D with maximal (4,0) and (3,1) supersymmetry, which were conjectured by C. Hull to exist and to describe strong coupling limits of ${\cal N}=8$ theories in 5D. These theories involve exotic gauge fields with non-standard Young tableaux representations, subject to (self-)duality constraints. We give novel actions in a 5+1 split of coordinates whose field equations reproduce those of the free bosonic (4,0) and (3,1) theory, respectively, including the (self-)duality relations. Evidence is presented for a master exceptional field theory formulation …
We continue the exploration of nonstandard continuum field theories related to fractons in 3+1 dimensions. Our theories exhibit exotic global and gauge symmetries, defects with restricted mobility, and interesting dualities. Depending on the model, the defects are the probe limits of either fractonic particles, strings, or strips. One of our models is the continuum limit of the plaquette Ising lattice model, which features an important role in the construction of the X-cube model.
Gauge theories can often be formulated in different but physically equivalent ways, a concept referred to as duality. Using a formalism based on graded geometry, we provide a unified treatment of all parent theories for different types of standard and exotic dualizations. Our approach is based on treating tensor fields as functions of a certain degree on graded supermanifolds equipped with a suitable number of odd coordinates. We present a universal two-parameter first order action for standard and exotic electric/magnetic dualizations and prove in full generality that it yields two dual secon…
We introduce a systematic way of constructing 3D exotic massive gravity theories in the first order formulation. Our method is based on truncating a single degree of freedom in the parity odd gravity models found earlier in arXiv:1405.6213 and supplementing it with appropriate potential terms such that the resulting models have well-defined metric equations but their Bianchi identities are satisfied only on-shell. Hence, they are `third way' consistent. We first re-derive two already known exotic theories using our approach and then construct an extended exotic massive gravity model whose metr…
We continue our exploration of exotic, gapless lattice and continuum field theories with subsystem global symmetries. In an earlier paper, we presented free lattice models enjoying all the global symmetries (except continuous translations), dualities, and anomalies of the continuum theories. Here, we study in detail the relation between the lattice models and the corresponding continuum theories. We do that by analyzing the spectrum of the theories and several correlation functions. These lead us to uncover interesting subtleties in the way the continuum limit can be taken. In particular, in s…
We study the supersymmetry projection rules on exotic branes in type II string theories and M-theory. They justify the validity of the exotic duality between standard branes and exotic branes of codimension two. By virtue of the supersymmetry projection rules on various branes, we can consider a system that involves multiple non-parallel exotic branes in the nongeometric background.
Supersymmetric theories with the same bosonic content but different fermions, aka \emph{twins}, were thought to exist only for supergravity. Here we show that pairs of super conformal field theories, for example exotic $\mathcal{N}=3$ and $\mathcal{N}=1$ theories in $D=4$ spacetime dimensions, can also be twin. We provide evidence from three different perspectives: (i) a twin S-fold construction, (ii) a double-copy argument and (iii) by identifying candidate twin holographically dual gauged supergravity theories. Furthermore, twin W-supergravity theories then follow by applying the double-copy…
Gauge fields in exotic representations of the Lorentz group in D dimensions - i.e. ones which are tensors of mixed symmetry corresponding to Young tableaux with arbitrary numbers of rows and columns - naturally arise through massive string modes and in dualising gravity and other theories in higher dimensions. We generalise the formalism of differential forms to allow the discussion of arbitrary gauge fields. We present the gauge symmetries, field strengths, field equations and actions for the free theory, and construct the various dual theories. In particular, we discuss linearised gravity in…
We reformulate known exotic theories (including theories of fractons) on a Euclidean spacetime lattice. We write them using the Villain approach and then we modify them to a convenient range of parameters. The new lattice models are closer to the continuum limit than the original lattice versions. In particular, they exhibit many of the recently found properties of the continuum theories including emergent global symmetries and surprising dualities. Also, these new models provide a clear and rigorous formulation to the continuum models and their singularities. In appendices, we use this approa…
We calculate the phase diagrams at high temperature of SU(N) gauge theories with massive fermions by minimizing the one-loop effective potential. Considering fermions in the adjoint (Adj) representation at various N we observe a variety of phases when Nf >= 2 Majorana flavours and periodic boundary conditions are applied to fermions. Also the confined phase is perturbatively accessible. For N = 3, we add Fundamental (F) representation fermions with antiperiodic boundary conditions to adjoint QCD to show how the Z(3)-symmetry breaks in the confined phase.
We discuss nonstandard continuum quantum field theories in 2+1 dimensions. They exhibit exotic global symmetries, a subtle spectrum of charged excitations, and dualities similar to dualities of systems in 1+1 dimensions. These continuum models represent the low-energy limits of certain known lattice systems. One key aspect of these continuum field theories is the important role played by discontinuous field configurations. In two companion papers, we will present 3+1-dimensional versions of these systems. In particular, we will discuss continuum quantum field theories of some models of fracton…
We analyse various two dimensional theories arising from compactification of type II and heterotic string theory on asymmetric orbifolds. We find extra supersymmetry generators arising from twisted sectors, giving rise to exotic supersymmetry algebras. Among others we discover new cases with a large number of supercharges, such as $\mathcal{N}=(20,8)$, $\mathcal{N}=(24,8)$, $\mathcal{N}=(32,0)$, $\mathcal{N}=(24,24)$ and $\mathcal{N}=(48,0)$.
We study some of the algebraic properties of the non-relativistic monopole. We find that we can construct theories that possess an exotic conserved fermionic charge that squares to the Casimir of the rotation group, yet do not possess an ordinary supersymmetry. This is in contrast to previous known examples with such exotic fermionic charges. We proceed to show that the presence of the exotic fermionic charge in the non-supersymmetric theory can nonetheless be understood using supersymmetric techniques, providing yet another example of the usefulness of supersymmetry in understanding non-super…
In six-dimensional supergravity, there is a natural sense in which matter lying in certain representations of the gauge group is "generic," in the sense that other "exotic" matter representations require more fine tuning. From considerations of the dimensionality of the moduli space and anomaly cancellation conditions, we find that the generic sets of matter representations are well-defined for 6D supergravity theories with gauge groups containing arbitrary numbers of nonabelian factors and $\operatorname{U}(1)$ factors. These generic matter representations also match with those that arise in …
Model-theoretic aspects of exotic smoothness were studied long ago uncovering unexpected relations to noncommutative spaces and quantum theory. Some of these relations were worked out in detail in later work. An important point in the argumentation was the forcing construction of Cohen but without a direct application to exotic smoothness. In this article we assign the set-theoretic forcing on trees to Casson handles and characterize small exotic smooth $R^4$ from this point of view. Moreover, we show how models in some Grothendieck toposes can help describing such differential structures in d…
We use holography to study finite-temperature deformations of RG flows that have exotic properties from an RG viewpoint. The holographic model consists of five-dimensional gravity coupled to a scalar field with a potential. Each negative extrema of the potential defines a dual conformal field theory. We find all the black brane solutions on the gravity side and use them to construct the thermal phase diagrams of the dual theories. We find an intricate phase structure that reflects and extends the exotic properties at zero temperature.
Black hole solutions and their thermodynamics are studied in Einstein-scalar theories. The associated zero-temperature solutions are non-trivial holographic RG flows. These include solutions which skip intermediate extrema of the bulk scalar potential or feature an inversion of the direction of the flow of the coupling (bounces). At finite temperature, a complex set of branches of black hole solutions is found. In some cases, first order phase transitions are found between the black-hole branches. In other cases, black hole solutions are found to exist even for boundary conditions which {\em d…
$BF$ theories defined over non trivial line bundles are studied. It is shown that such theories describe a realization of a non trivial higher order bundle. The partition function differs from the usual one -in terms of the Ray Singer Torsion- by a factor that arises from the non triviality of the line bundles.
In this contribution some aspects of supergravity and super Yang-Mills systems in D=6 are briefly reviewed and, in some cases, are contrasted with the analogous features in D=4. Particular emphasis is laid on the stringy solutions of the D=6 super Yang-Mills systems.
We discuss some exact Seiberg--Witten-type maps for noncommutative electrodynamics. Their implications for anomalies in different (noncommutative and commutative) descriptions are also analysed.
We consider general aspects of N=2 gauge theories in three dimensions, including their multiplet structure, anomalies and non-renormalization theorems. For U(1) gauge theories, we discuss the quantum corrections to the moduli space, and their relation to ``mirror symmetries'' of 3d N=4 theories. Mirror symmetry is given an interpretation in terms of vortices. For SU(N_c) gauge groups with N_f fundamental flavors, we show that, depending on the number of flavors, there are quantum moduli spaces of vacua with various phenomena near the origin.
In this thesis we investigate some aspects of quantum field theories from a holographic perspective. In the first chapters we examine in detail a one-paremeter family of three-dimensional gauge theories by means of their type IIA gravity duals. We analyse features such as their confinement nature, spectrum, entanglement properties or thermal phase transitions. This family interpolates between quasi-conformal and quasi-confining physics. In the last two chapters, we use bottom-up models to study complex conformal field theories and transport properties of dense QCD respectively.
In this thesis, we present two aspects of higher-spin gauge field theories: dualities and interactions. We first consider dualities of the free theories at the level of the action. Then, external "electric" and "magnetic" sources are introduced a la Dirac, which leads to a quantization condition on the product of conserved "electric" and "magnetic" higher-spin charges. In the second part, higher-spin interactions are studied in the field-antifield (or BRST) formalism. Theorems are proved about local interactions of sets of exotic spin-two fields, as well as of sets of symmetric spin-three fiel…
We comment on various aspects of the the dynamics of 3d N=2 Chern-Simons gauge theories and their possible phases. Depending on the matter content, real masses and FI parameters, there can be non-compact Higgs or Coulomb branches, compact Higgs or Coulomb branches, and isolated vacua. We compute the Witten index of the theories, and show that it does not change when the system undergoes a phase transition. We study aspects of monopole operators and solitons in these theories, and clarify subtleties in the soliton collective coordinate quantization. We show that solitons are compatible with a m…
The boundary values of the time-component of the gauge potential form externally specifiable data characterizing a gauge theory. We point out some consequences such as reduced symmetries, bulk currents for manifolds with disjoint boundaries and some nuances of how the charge algebra is realized.
Among the allowed representations of extended supersymmetry in six dimensions there are exotic chiral multiplets that, instead of a graviton, contain mixed-symmetry spin-2 tensor fields. Notably, an $\mathcal{N}=(4,0)$ multiplet has a four index exotic graviton and it was conjectured that an interacting theory based on this multiplet could arise as a strong coupling limit of M theory compactified on $T^6$. We present an algebraic study of these multiplets and their possible embedding into the framework of exceptional field theory, finding in particular that the six-dimensional momenta do not c…

The emerging study of fractons, a new type of quasi-particle with restricted mobility, has motivated the construction of several classes of interesting continuum quantum field theories with novel properties. One such class consists of foliated field theories which, roughly, are built by coupling together fields supported on the leaves of foliations of spacetime. Another approach, which we refer to as exotic field theory, focuses on constructing Lagrangians consistent with special symmetries (like subsystem symmetries) that are adjacent to fracton physics. A third framework is that of infinite-…
Some nonperturbative aspects of Euclidean Yang-Mills theories in four dimensions, quantized in the Landau gauge, are analytically studied. In particular, we investigate the dynamical mass generation for the gluons due to the presence of dimension two condensates. This study is performed in the framework of the local composite operator technique in the case of the Yang-Mills action as well as in the case of the Gribov-Zwanziger action. Further, an investigation of the Gribov ambiguities in the linear covariant gauges is presented.
The phase diagrams at high temperature of SU(N) gauge theories with massive fermions are calculated by numerically minimizing the one-loop effective potential. We consider fermions in the Fundamental (F), Adjoint (Adj), Antisymmetric (AS), and Symmetric (S) representations, for N from 3 to 9, with periodic and antiperiodic boundary conditions applied. For one flavour of AS/S (Dirac) fermion with periodic boundary conditions the C-breaking phase is favoured perturbatively for all values of the fermion mass. In the case of one flavour of adjoint Majorana fermion, and periodic boundary conditons,…
Argyres-Douglas (AD) theories constitute an infinite class of superconformal field theories in four dimensions with a number of interesting properties. We study several new aspects of AD theories engineered in $A$-type class $\mathcal{S}$ with one irregular puncture of Type I or Type II and also a regular puncture. These include conformal manifolds, structures of the Higgs branch, as well as the three dimensional gauge theories coming from the reduction on a circle. The latter admit a description in terms of a linear quiver with unitary and special unitary gauge groups, along with a number of …
We extend our exploration of nonstandard continuum quantum field theories in 2+1 dimensions to 3+1 dimensions. These theories exhibit exotic global symmetries, a peculiar spectrum of charged states, unusual gauge symmetries, and surprising dualities. Many of the systems we study have a known lattice construction. In particular, one of them is a known gapless fracton model. The novelty here is in their continuum field theory description. In this paper, we focus on models with a global $U(1)$ symmetry and in a followup paper we will study models with a global $\mathbb{Z}_N$ symmetry.
We consider a real scalar field and a Majorana fermion field to construct a supersymmetric quantum theory of free fermion fields based on the deformed Heisenberg algebra $[x,p]=i\hbar\big(1-βp+2β^{2}p^{2}\big)$, where $β$ is a deformation parameter. We present a deformed supersymmetric algebra in the presence of minimal length and maximal momentum.
We review some recent observations in theories with eight supercharges. We point out that such theories can be generalized by starting from the equations of motion rather than from an action. We show that vector multiplets constructed in such a way can have more general Fayet-Iliopoulos terms and that the scalar fields of hypermultiplets can be coordinate functions on more general target spaces. Although our discussion holds in five dimensions, the results can easily be extended to other dimensions.
We discuss aspects of generic 2-dimensional dilaton gravity theories. The 2-dim geometry is in general conformal to $AdS_2$ and has IR curvature singularities at zero temperature: this can be regulated by a black hole. The on-shell action is divergent: we discuss the holographic energy-momentum tensor by adding appropriate counterterms. For theories obtained by dimensional reduction of the gravitational sector of higher dimensional theories, for instance higher dimensional $AdS$ gravity as a concrete example, the 2-dimensional description dovetails with the higher dimensional one. We also disc…
We present a definition of the non-abelian generalisations of affine Toda theory related from the outset to vertex operator constructions of the corresponding Kac-Moody algebra $\gh$. Reuslts concerning conjugacy classes of the Weyl group of the finite Lie algebra $\fing$ to embeddings of $A_1$ in $\fing$ are used both to present the theories, and to elucidate their soliton spectrum. We confirm the conjecture of \cite{OSU93} for the soliton specialisation of the Leznov-Saveliev solution. The energy-momentum tensor of such theories is shown to split into a total derivative part and a part depen…
The G++ content of the formulation of gravity and M-theories as very-extended Kac-Moody invariant theories is further analysed. The different exotic phases of all the G_B++ theories, which admit exact solutions describing intersecting branes smeared in all directions but one, are derived. This is achieved by analysing for all G++ the signatures which are related to the conventional one (1,D-1) by `dualities' generated by the Weyl reflections.
Geometric picture of line operators of N=2 class S theories was found by imposing closure condition on operator product expansion (OPE) of line operators. In this paper, we first identify the geometric representation of ordinary Wilson-'t Hooft line operators of field theory, and study duality action on them. We further define a Dirac product between line operators and classify the allowed set of line operators by requiring: a: closure of OPE; b: mutual locality; c: maximality. Using above classifications, we find many distinct gauge theories associated with a single duality frame, and show ex…
We propose a systematic approach to computing the BPS spectra of any 5d/6d supersymmetric quantum field theory in Coulomb phases, which admits either gauge theory descriptions or geometric descriptions, based on the Nakajima-Yoshioka's blowup equations. We provide a significant generalization of the blowup equation approach in terms of both properly quantized magnetic fluxes on the blowup $\hat{\mathbb{C}}^2$ and the effective prepotential for 5d/6d field theories on the Omega background which is uniquely determined by the Chern-Simons couplings on their Coulomb branches. We employ our method …
The focus of the present thesis is on the analysis of gauge symmetry and its various impacts on gauge theories. In the first part of this thesis, we have studied different aspects of symmetries in connection with various field and string theoretic models. The manifestations of gauge symmetries and their interconnection with the diffeomorphism invariances have been discussed in the context of different generally covariant models like string, membrane, $p-$brane and metric gravity. Analysis of interacting string with proper inclusion of the stringy boundary conditions led to the noncommutative n…
The debate on the physical relevance of conformal transformations can be faced by taking the Palatini approach into account to gravitational theories. We show that conformal transformations are not only a mathematical tool to disentangle gravitational and matter degrees of freedom (passing from the Jordan frame to the Einstein frame) but they acquire a physical meaning considering the bi-metric structure of Palatini approach which allows to distinguish between spacetime structure and geodesic structure. Examples of higher-order and non-minimally coupled theories are worked out and relevant cos…
