In this paper we consider the Cauchy problem for gravity water waves, in a domain with a flat bottom and in arbitrary space dimension. We prove that if the data are of size $\varepsilon$ in a space of analytic functions which have a holomorphic extension in a strip of size $σ$, then the solution exists up to a time of size $C/\varepsilon$ in a space of analytic functions having at time $t$ a holomorphic extension in a strip of size $σ- C'\varepsilon t$.
We prove the local well-posedness for a nonlinear equation modeling the evolution of the free surface for waves of moderate amplitude in the shallow water regime.
We prove the local existence for the Water Waves equations with large bathymetric variations on a time interval of size 1/ε, where $ε$ measures the amplitude of the wave. We just need the presence of surface tension.
In this paper, we investigate the Cauchy problem for a higher order shallow water type equation \begin{eqnarray*} u_{t}-u_{txx}+\partial_{x}^{2j+1}u-\partial_{x}^{2j+3}u+3uu_{x}-2u_{x}u_{xx}-uu_{xxx}=0, \end{eqnarray*} where $x\in \mathbf{T}=\mathbf{R}/2π$ and $j\in N^{+}.$ Firstly, we prove that the Cauchy problem for the shallow water type equation is locally well-posed in $H^{s}(\mathbf{T})$ with $s\geq -\frac{j-2}{2}$ for arbitrary initial data. By using the $I$-method, we prove that the Cauchy problem for the shallow water type equation is globally well-posed in $H^{s}(\mathbf{T})$ with $…
We are interested in the system of gravity water waves equations without surface tension. Our purpose is to study the optimal regularity thresholds for the initial conditions. In terms of Sobolev embeddings, the initial surfaces we consider turn out to be only of~$C^{3/2+ε}$-class for some $ε>0$ and consequently have unbounded curvature, while the initial velocities are only Lipschitz. We reduce the system using a paradifferential approach.
In this article, we develop the local Cauchy theory for the gravity water waves system, for rough initial data which do not decay at infinity. We work in the context of $L^2$-based uniformly local Sobolev spaces introduced by Kato. We prove a classical well-posedness result (without loss of derivatives). Our result implies also a local well-posedness result in Hölder spaces (with loss of $d/2$ derivatives). As an illustration, we solve a question raised by Boussinesq on the water waves problem in a canal. We take benefit of an elementary observation to show that the strategy suggested by Bouss…
We study the global well-posedness and asymptotic behavior of solutions for the Cauchy problem of three-dimensional sixth order Cahn-Hilliard equation arising in oil-water-surfactant mixtures. First, by using the pure energy method and a standard continuity argument, we prove that there exists a unique global strong solution provided that the $H^2$-norm of initial data is sufficiently small. Moreover, we also establish the suitable negative Sobolev norm estimates and obtain the time decay rate of strong solutions. It is worth pointing out that although the problem we considered is a sixth-orde…
In this article, we consider the compressible Navier-Stokes equation with density dependent viscosity coefficients and a term of capillarity introduced by Coquel et al in \cite{5CR}. This model includes at the same time the barotropic Navier-Stokes equations with variable viscosity coefficients, shallow-water system and the model of Rohde. We first study the well-posedness of the model in critical regularity spaces with respect to the scaling of the associated equations. In a functional setting as close as possibleto the physical energy spaces, we prove global existence of solutions close to a…
We consider the Cacuhy problem for a viscous compressible rotating shallow water system with a third-order surface-tension term involved, derived recently in the modelling of motions for shallow water with free surface in a rotating sub-domain. The global existence of the solution in the space of Besov type is shown for initial data close to a constant equilibrium state away from the vacuum. Unlike the previous analysis about the compressible fluid model without coriolis forces, the rotating effect causes a coupling between two parts of Hodge's decomposition of the velocity vector field, addit…
This paper is devoted to the proof of a well-posedness result for the gravity water waves equations, in arbitrary dimension and in fluid domains with general bottoms, when the initial velocity field is not necessarily Lipschitz. Moreover, for two-dimensional waves, we can consider solutions such that the curvature of the initial free surface does not belong to $L^2$. The proof is entirely based on the Eulerian formulation of the water waves equations, using microlocal analysis to obtain sharp Sobolev and Hölder estimates. We first prove tame estimates in Sobolev spaces depending linearly on Hö…
In this paper, we investigate the Cauchy problem for the shallow water type equation \[ u_{t}+\partial_{x}^{3}u + \frac{1}{2}\partial_{x}(u^{2})+\partial_{x} (1-\partial_{x}^{2})^{-1}\left[u^{2}+\frac{1}{2}u_{x}^{2}\right]=0,x\in {\mathbf T}=\R/2π λ\] with low regularity data in the periodic settings and $λ\geq1$. We prove that the bilinear estimate in $X_{s,b}$ with $s<\frac{1}{2}$ is invalid. We also prove that the problem is locally well-posed in $H^{s}(\mathbf{T})$ with $\frac{1}{6}<s<\frac{1}{2}$ for small initial data. The result of this paper improves the result of case $j=1$ of Himonas…
We address various issues concerning the Cauchy problem for the Zakharov-Rubenchik system (known as the Benney-Roskes system in water waves theory), which models the interaction of short and long waves in many physical situations. Motivated by the transverse stability/instability of the one-dimensional solitary wave (line solitary), we study the Cauchy problem in the background of a line solitary wave.
The smoothing effect of the Cauchy problem for a class of kinetic equations is studied. We firstly consider the spatially homogeneous non linear Landau equation with Maxwellian molecules and inhomogeneous linear Fokker-Planck equation to show the ultra-analytic effects of the Cauchy problem. Those smoothing effect results are optimal and similar to heat equation. In the second part, we study a model of spatially inhomogeneous linear Landau equation with Maxwellian molecules, and show the analytic effect of the Cauchy problem.
This paper is a continuation of a previous work by two of the Authors on long time existence for Boussinesq systems modeling the propagation of long, weakly nonlinear water waves. We provide proofs on examples not considered previously in particular we prove a long time well-posedness result for a delicate "strongly dispersive" Boussinesq system.
This article is devoted to the Cauchy problem for the 2D gravity-capillary water waves in fluid domains with general bottoms. We prove that the Cauchy problem in Sobolev spaces is uniquely solvable for data $\frac{1}{4}$ derivatives less regular than the energy threshold (obtained by Alazard-Burq-Zuily), which corresponds to the gain of Holder regularity of the semiclassical Strichartz estimate for the fully nonlinear system. To obtain this result, we establish global, quantitative results for the paracomposition theory of Alinhac.
This article is devoted to the study of the Hele-Shaw equation. We introduce an approach inspired by the water-wave theory. Starting from a reduction to the boundary, introducing the Dirichlet to Neumann operator and exploiting various cancellations, we exhibit parabolic evolution equations for the horizontal and vertical traces of the velocity on the free surface. This allows to quasi-linearize the equations in a very simple way. By combining these exact identities with convexity inequalities, we prove the existence of hidden Lyapunov functions of different natures. We also deduce from these …
This paper is concerned with the Cauchy problem of the one-dimensional free surface equation of shallow water wave, we obtain local well-posedness of the free surface equation of shallow water wave in Sobolev spaces. In addition, we also derive a wave-breaking mechanism for strong solutions.
In this note, we study solutions to semiclassical Schrodinger equations on a real analytic manifold with a real analytic potential and prove the semiclassical version of Cauchy estimates on derivatives. As an application, we use Donnelly and Fefferman's method to prove the upper and lower bounds for (n-1)-dimensional Hausdorff measure of the nodal sets of the solutions to semiclassical Schrodinger equations.
In this paper, we investigate the Cauchy problem for the shallow water type equation \begin{eqnarray*} u_{t}+\partial_{x}^{2j+1}u + \frac{1}{2}\partial_{x}(u^{2})+ \partial_{x}(1-\partial_{x}^{2})^{-1}\left[u^{2}+\frac{1}{2}u_{x}^{2}\right]=0 \end{eqnarray*} with low regularity data in the periodic settings. Himonas and Misiolek (Communications in Partial Differential Equations, 23(1998), 123-139.) have proved that the problem is locally well-posed for small initial data in H^{s}(\mathbf{T}) with s\geq-\frac{j}{2}+1,j\in N^{+} with the aid of the standard Fourier restriction norm method. To th…
We present a comprehensive introduction and overview of a recently derived model equation for waves of large amplitude in the context of shallow water waves and provide a literature review of all the available studies on this equation. Furthermore, we establish a novel result concerning the local well-posedness of the corresponding Cauchy problem for space-periodic solutions with initial data from the Sobolev space $H^s$ on the circle for $s>3/2$.
We prove the persistence of analyticity for classical solution of the Cauchy problem for quasilinear wave equations with analytic data. Our results show that the analyticity of solutions, stated by the Cauchy-Kowalewski and Ovsiannikov-Nirenberg theorems, lasts till a classical solution exists. Moreover, they show that if the equation and the Cauchy data are analytic only in a part of space-variables, then a classical solution also is analytic in these variables. The approach applies to other quasilinear equations and implies the persistence of the space-analyticity (and the partial space-anal…
We consider the gravity-capillary waves in any dimension and in fluid domains with general bottoms. Using the paradiferential reduction established in the companion paper, we prove Strichartz estimates for solutions to this problem, at a low regularity level such that initially, the velocity field can be non-Lipschitz up to the free surface. We then use those estimates to solve the Cauchy problem at this level of regularity.
In this work, we study the Cauchy problem of the spatially homogeneous Landau equation with hard potentials in a close-to-quilibrium framework. We prove that the solution to the Cauchy problem enjoys the analytic regularizing effect of the time variable with an L2 initial datum for positive time. So that the smoothing effect of Cauchy problem for the spatially homogeneous Landau equation with hard potentials is exactly same as heat equation.
We consider a toy model for a damped water waves system in a domain $Ω_t \subset \mathbb{T} \times \mathbb{R}$. The toy model is based on the paradifferential water waves equation derived in the work of Alazard-Burq-Zuily. The form of damping we utilize we utilize is a modified sponge layer proposed for the three-dimensional water waves system by Clamond, et. al. We show that, in the case of small Cauchy data, solutions to the toy model exhibit a quadratic lifespan. This is done via proving energy estimates with the energy being constructed from appropriately chosen vector fields.
In this paper we consider the Cauchy problem for 2D viscous shallow water system in $H^s(\mathbb{R}^2)$, $s>1$. We first prove the local well-posedness of this problem by using the Littlewood-Paley theory, the Bony decomposition, and the theories of transport equations and transport diffusion equations. Then, we get the global existence of the system with small initial data in $H^s(\mathbb{R}^2)$, $s>1$. Our obtained result improves the recent result in \cite{W}
We consider the Klein-Gordon equation on analytic spacetimes with an analytic Cauchy surface. In this setting, we prove the existence of pure analytic Hadamard states. The proof is based on considering an elliptic operator obtained by Wick rotating the Klein-Gordon operator in a neighborhood of a Cauchy hypersurface. The Cauchy data of Hadamard two-point functions are constructed as Calderón projectors (suitably generalized if the hypersurface is non-compact) for the elliptic operator.
In this paper we consider the Cauchy problem for 2D viscous shallow water system in Besov spaces. We firstly prove the local well-posedness of this problem in $B^s_{p,r}(\mathbb{R}^2)$, $s>max\{1,\frac{2}{p}\}$, $1\leq p,r\leq \infty$ by using the Littlewood-Paley theory, the Bony decomposition and the theories of transport equations and transport diffusion equations. Then we can prove the global existence of the system with small enough initial data in $B^s_{p,r}(\mathbb{R}^2)$, $1\leq p\leq2$, $1\leq r<\infty$ and $s>\frac{2}{p}$. Our obtained results generalize and cover the recent results …
This paper mainly investigates the Cauchy problem of the spatially weighted dissipative equation with initial data in the weighted Lebesgue space. A generalized Hankel Transform is introduced to derive the analytical solution and a special Young's Inequality has been applied to prove the space-time estimates for this type of equation.
The goal of this monograph is to prove that any solution of the Cauchy problem for the capillarity-gravity water waves equations, in one space dimension, with periodic, even in space, initial data of small size $ε$, is almost globally defined in time on Sobolev spaces, i.e. it exists on a time interval of length of magnitude $ε^{-N}$ for any $N$, as soon as the initial data are smooth enough, and the gravity-capillarity parameters are taken outside an exceptional subset of zero measure. In contrast to the many results known for these equations on the real line, with decaying Cauchy data, one c…
We consider the Cauchy problem for the wave equation in $Ω\times{\mathbb R}$ with data given on some part of the boundary $\partialΩ\times{\mathbb R}$. We provide a reconstruction algorithm for this problem based on analytic expressions. Our result is applicable to the problem of determining nonstationary wave field arising in geophysics, photoacoustic tomography, tsunami wave source recovery.
In this paper, we consider the fractional Camassa-Holm equation modelling the propagation of small-but-finite amplitude long unidirectional waves in a nonlocally and nonlinearly elastic medium. First, we establish the local well-posedness in Besov space $B^{s_0}_{2,1}$ with $s_0=2ν-\frac 1 2$ for $ν>\frac 3 2 $ and $s_0=\frac 5 2$ for $1<ν\leq \frac 3 2 $. Then, with a given analytic initial data, we establish the analyticity of the solutions in both variables, globally in space and locally in time.
In this work, we study the nonlinear spatially homogeneous Landau equation with hard potential in a close-to-equilibrium framework, we show that the solution to the Cauchy problem with $L^2$ initial datum enjoys a analytic Gelfand-Shilov regularizing effect in the class $S^1_1(\mathbb{R}^3)$, meaning that the solution of the Cauchy problem and its Fourier transformation are analytic for any positive time, the evolution of analytic radius is similar to the heat equation.
We prove that the streamlines and the profile of periodic gravity water waves traveling over a flat bed with wavespeed which exceeds the horizontal velocity of all fluid particles are real-analytic graphs if the vorticity function is merely integrable.
The purpose of this article is to clarify the Cauchy theory of the water waves equations as well in terms of regularity indexes for the initial conditions as for the smoothness of the bottom of the domain (namely no regularity assumption is assumed on the bottom). Our main result is that, following the approach developped by T. Alazard and G. Métivier in [1], after suitable paralinearizations, the system can be arranged into an explicit symmetric system of Schrödinger type. We then show that the smoothing effect for the (one dimensional) surface tension water waves proved by H. Christianson, V…
We define and study a generalization of the analytic Cauchy problem, that specializes to the Cauchy-Kowaleskaya-Kashiwara problem in the linear case. The main leitmotive of this text is to adapt Kashiwara's formulation of this problem both to the relatively D-algebraic case and to the derived analytic situation. Along the way, we define the characteristic variety of a derived nonlinear partial differential system.
We consider the Cauchy problem for the 2D gravity water wave equation. Recently Wu \cite{Wu15, Wu18} proved the local well-posedness of the equation in a regime which allows interfaces with angled crests as initial data. In this work we study properties of these singular solutions and prove that the singularities of these solutions are "rigid". More precisely we prove that an initial interface with angled crests remains angled crested, the Euler equation holds point-wise even on the boundary, the particle at the tip stays at the tip, the acceleration at the tip is the one due to gravity and th…
In this paper, we prove local existence and uniqueness of analytic sharp-front solutions to a generalised SQG equation by the use of an abstract Cauchy--Kowalevskaya theorem. Here, the velocity is determined by $u = |\nabla|^{-2β}\nabla^\perpθ$ which (for $1<β\leq 2$) is more singular than in SQG. This is achieved despite the appearance of pseudodifferential operators of order higher than one in our equation, by recasting our equation in a suitable integral form. We also provide a full proof of the abstract version of the Cauchy--Kowalevskaya theorem we use.
We review recent progress on the long-time regularity of solutions of the Cauchy problem for the water waves equations, in two and three dimensions. We begin by introducing the free boundary Euler equations and discussing the local existence of solutions using the paradifferential approach, as in [7, 1, 2]. We then describe in a unified framework, using the Eulerian formulation, global existence results for three dimensional and two dimensional gravity waves, see [70, 146, 145, 87, 5, 6, 79, 80, 136], and our joint result with Deng and Pausader [60] on global regularity for the 3D gravity-capi…
We prove that the periodic initial value problem for a modified Euler-Poisson equation is well-posed for initial data in $H^{s} (T^{m})$ when $s>m/2+2$ and we improve the Sobolev index to $s>3/2$ for $m=1$. We also study the analytic regularity of this problem and prove a Cauchy-Kowalevski type theorem. After presenting a formal derivation of the equation on the semidirect product space $ Diff \ltimes C^{\infty}(\tor)$ as a Hamiltonian equation, we concentrate to one space dimension ($m=1$) and show that the equation is bihamiltonian.
Consider a three-dimensional fluid in a rectangular tank, bounded by a flat bottom, vertical walls and a free surface evolving under the influence of gravity. We prove that one can estimate its energy by looking only at the motion of the points of contact between the free surface and the vertical walls. The proof relies on the multiplier technique, the Craig-Sulem-Zakharov formulation of the water-wave problem, a Pohozaev identity for the Dirichlet to Neumann operator, previous results about the Cauchy problem and computations inspired by the analysis done by Benjamin and Olver of the conserva…
We solve Cauchy problems for some $μ$-Camassa-Holm integro-partial differential equations in the analytic category. The equations to be considered are $μ$CH of Khesin-Lenells-Misiołek, $μ$DP of Lenells-Misiołek-Tiğlay, the higher-order $μ$CH of Wang-Li-Qiao and the non-quasilinear version of Qu-Fu-Liu. We prove the unique local solvability of the Cauchy problems and provide an estimate of the lifespan of the solutions. Moreover, we show the existence of a unique global-in-time analytic solution for $μ$CH, $μ$DP and the higher-order $μ$CH. The present work is the first result of such a global n…
We consider the Cauchy problem of the nonlinear Landau equation of Maxwellian molecules, under the perturbation frame work to global equilibrium. We show that if $H^r_x(L^2_v), r >3/2$ norm of the initial perturbation is small enough, then the Cauchy problem of the nonlinear Landau equation admits a unique global solution which becomes analytic with respect to both position $x$ and velocity $v$ variables for any time $t>0$. This is the first result of analytic smoothing effect for the spatially inhomogeneous nonlinear kinetic equation. The method used here is microlocal analysis and energy est…
This paper is devoted to the proof of a global existence result for the water waves equation with smooth, small, and decaying at infinity Cauchy data. We obtain moreover an asymptotic description in physical coordinates of the solution, which shows that modified scattering holds. The proof is based on a bootstrap argument involving $L^2$ and $L^\infty$ estimates. The $L^2$ bounds are proved in a companion paper of this article. They rely on a normal forms paradifferential method allowing one to obtain energy estimates on the Eulerian formulation of the water waves equation. We give here the pr…
Fractional derivatives can be used to model time delays in a diffusion process. When the order of the fractional derivative is distributed over the unit interval, it is useful for modeling a mixture of delay sources. In some special cases distributed order derivative can be used to model ultra-slow diffusion. We extend the results of (Baeumer, B. and Meerschaert, M. M. Stochastic solutions for fractional Cauchy problems. Fract. Calc. Appl. Anal. 4 (2001), 481--500.) in the single order fractional derivative case to distributed order fractional derivative case. In particular, we develop the str…
We show that, given a family of discs centered at a chord-arc curve, the analytic capacity of a union of arbitrary subsets of these discs (one subset in each disc) is comparable with the sum of their analytic capacities. We show a sort of converse to this geometric statement as well. However, we need that the discs in question would be separated, and it is not clear whether the separation condition is essential or not. We apply this result to find families $\{μ_j\}$ of measures in $\mathbb{C}$ with the following property. If the Cauchy integral operators $\mathcal{C}_{μ_j}$ from $L^2(μ_j)$ to …
Our goal in this paper is to apply a normal forms method to estimate the Sobolev norms of the solutions of the water waves equation. We construct a paradifferential change of unknown, without derivatives losses, which eliminates the part of the quadratic terms that bring non zero contributions in a Sobolev energy inequality. Our approach is purely Eulerian: we work on the Craig-Sulem-Zakharov formulation of the water waves equation. In addition to these Sobolev estimates, we also prove $L^2$-estimates for the $\partial_x^αZ^β$-derivatives of the solutions of the water waves equation, where $Z$…
We define a class of pseudo-differential operators in a completely new way, which is called the abstract operators and expounded systematically the theory of abstract operators. By combining abstract operators with the Laplace transform, we can apply the Laplace transform to any $n+1$ dimensional linear higher-order partial differential equations $P(\partial_x,\partial_t)u=f(x,t)$ directly, without using the Fourier transform. By making introduction of abstract operators $G(\partial_x,t):=\mathcal{L}^{-1}[1/P(\partial_x,s)]$, the analytic solutions of initial value problems are expressed in th…
We study the Cauchy problem of the 2D viscous shallow water equations in some critical Besov spaces $\dot B^{\frac{2}{p}}_{p,1}(\mathbb{R}^2)\times \dot B^{\frac{2}{p}-1}_{p,q}(\mathbb{R}^2)$. As is known, this system is locally well-posed for large initial data as well as globally well-posed for small initial data in $\dot B^{\frac{2}{p}}_{p,1}(\mathbb{R}^2)\times \dot B^{\frac{2}{p}-1}_{p,1}(\mathbb{R}^2)$ for $p<4$ and ill-posed in $\dot B^{\frac{2}{p}}_{p,1}(\mathbb{R}^2)\times \dot B^{\frac{2}{p}-1}_{p,1}(\mathbb{R}^2)$ for $p>4$. In this paper, we prove that this system is ill-posed for …
In this work, we study the linear Landau equation with soft potential and show that the solution to the Cauchy problem with initial datum in $L^{2}(\mathbb{R}^3)$ enjoys an analytic regularizing effect, and the evolution of analytic radius is same as heat equations.
We study the asymptotic behavior of the solutions related to a singularly perturbed q-difference-differential problem in the complex domain. The analytic solution can be splitted according to the nature of the equation and its geometry so that both, Gevrey and q-Gevrey asymptotic phenomena are observed and can be distinguished, relating the analytic and the formal solution. The proof leans on a two level novel version of Ramis-Sibuya theorem under Gevrey and q-Gevrey orders.
For the Cauchy problem for an operator differential equation of the form $y'(z) = Ay(z)$, where $A$ is a closed linear operator on a Banach space over the completion of an algebraic closure of the field of $p$-adic numbers, a criterion of correct solvability in the class of locally analytic vector-functions is established. It is shown how the Cauchy-Kovalevskaya theorem for $p$-adic partial differential equations may be obtained as a particular case from this criterion.
For an operator-differential equation of the form $y^{(m)}(z) = Ay(z)$, where $A$ is a closed linear operator on a Banach space over the the field of $p$-adic numbers, the necessary and sufficient conditions on initial data for the Cauchy problem to be well-posed in the class of locally analytic vector-valued functions are given. The result is illustrated by $p$-adic partial differential equations.
