In this paper, we prove local existence and uniqueness of analytic sharp-front solutions to a generalised SQG equation by the use of an abstract Cauchy--Kowalevskaya theorem. Here, the velocity is determined by $u = |\nabla|^{-2β}\nabla^\perpθ$ which (for $1<β\leq 2$) is more singular than in SQG. This is achieved despite the appearance of pseudodifferential operators of order higher than one in our equation, by recasting our equation in a suitable integral form. We also provide a full proof of the abstract version of the Cauchy--Kowalevskaya theorem we use.
Patch solutions for the surface quasigeostrophic (SQG) equation model sharp temperature fronts in atmospheric and oceanic flows. We establish local well-posedness for SQG sharp fronts of low Sobolev regularity, $H^{2+s}$ for arbitrarily small $s>0$, allowing for fronts with unbounded curvature.
We prove local well-posedness in the Sobolev spaces $\dot H^s(\mathbb{T})$, with $s>7/2$, for an initial value problem for a nonlocal, cubically nonlinear, dispersive equation that provides an approximate description of the evolution of surface quasi-geostrophic (SQG) fronts with small slopes.
Guided by numerical simulations, we present the proof of two results concerning the behaviour of SQG sharp fronts and $α$-patches. We establish that ellipses are not rotational solutions and we prove that initially convex interfaces may lose this property in finite time.
In this paper we consider a family of active scalars with a velocity field given by $u = Λ^{-1+α}\nabla^{\perp} θ$, for $α\in (0,1)$. This family of equations is a more singular version of the two-dimensional Surface Quasi-Geostrophic (SQG) equation, which would correspond to $α=0$. We consider the evolution of sharp fronts by studying families of almost-sharp fronts. These are smooth solutions with simple geometry in which a sharp transition in the solution occurs in a tubular neighbourhood (of size $δ$). We study their evolution and that of compatible curves, and introduce the notion of a sp…
The generalized surface quasi-geostrophic (GSQG) equations are transport equations for an active scalar that depend on a parameter $0<α\le 2$. Special cases are the two-dimensional incompressible Euler equations ($α= 2$) and the surface quasi-geostrophic (SQG) equations ($α= 1$). We derive contour-dynamics equations for a class of two-front solutions of the GSQG equations when the fronts are a graph. Scalar reductions of these equations include ones that describe a single front in the presence of a rigid, flat boundary. We use the contour dynamics equations to determine the linearized stabilit…
We consider the well-posedness of the surface quasi-geostrophic (SQG) front equation. Hunter-Shu-Zhang [9] established well-posedness under a small data condition as well as a convergence condition on an expansion of the equation's nonlinearity. In the present article, we establish unconditional large data local well-posedness of the SQG front equation, while also improving the low regularity threshold for the initial data. In addition, we establish global well-posedness theory in the rough data regime by using the testing by wave packet approach of Ifrim-Tataru.
This paper is about the evolution of a temperature front governed by the Surface quasi-geostrophic equation. The existence part of that program within the scale of Sobolev spaces was obtained by one of the authors [10]. Here we revisit that proof introducing some new tools and points of view which allow us to conclude the also needed uniqueness result.
At the core of this article is an improved, sharp dispersive estimate for the anisotropic linear semigroup $e^{R_1 t}$ arising in both the study of the dispersive SQG equation and the inviscid Boussinesq system. We combine the decay estimate with a blow-up criterion to show how dispersion leads to long-time existence of solutions to the dispersive SQG equation, improving the results obtained using hyperbolic methods. In the setting of the inviscid Boussinesq system it turns out that linearization around a specific stationary solution leads to the same linear semigroup, so that we can make use …
We consider the initial value problem for the fractionally dissipative quasi-geostrophic equation \[ \partial_t θ+ \mathcal{R}^\perp θ\cdot \nabla θ+ Λ^γθ= 0, \qquad θ(\cdot,0) =θ_0 \] on $\mathbb{T}^2 = [0,1]^2$, with $γ\in (0,1)$. The coefficient in front of the dissipative term $Λ^γ= (-Δ)^{γ/2}$ is normalized to $1$. We show that given a smooth initial datum with $\|θ_0\|_{L^2}^{γ/2} \|θ_0\|_{\dot{H}^2}^{1-γ/2}\leq R$, where {\em $R$ is arbitrarily large}, there exists $γ_1 = γ_1(R) \in (0,1)$ such that for $γ\geq γ_1$, the solution of the supercritical SQG equation with dissipation $Λ^γ$ d…
We consider the subcritical SQG equation in its natural scale invariant Sobolev space and prove the existence of a global attractor of optimal regularity. The proof is based on a new energy estimate in Sobolev spaces to bootstrap the regularity to the optimal level, derived by means of nonlinear lower bounds on the fractional laplacian. This estimate appears to be new in the literature, and allows a sharp use of the subcritical nature of the $L^\infty$ bounds for this problem. As a byproduct, we obtain attractors for weak solutions as well. Moreover, we study the critical limit of the attracto…
By performing estimates on the integral of the absolute value of vorticity along a local vortex line segment, we establish a relatively sharp dynamic growth estimate of maximum vorticity under some assumptions on the local geometric regularity of the vorticity vector. Our analysis applies to both the 3D incompressible Euler equations and the surface quasi-geostrophic model (SQG). As an application of our vorticity growth estimate, we apply our result to the 3D Euler equation with the two anti-parallel vortex tubes initial data considered by Hou-Li. Under some additional assumption on the vorti…
In this paper for either the sharp front Surface Quasi-Geostrophic equation or the Muskat problem we rule out the "splash singularity" blow-up scenario; in other words we prove that the contours evolving from either of these systems can not intersect at a single point while the free boundary remains smooth. Splash singularities have been shown to hold for the free boundary incompressible Euler equation in the form of the water waves contour evolution problem \cite{ADCPJ}. Our result confirms the numerical simulations in \cite{CFMR} where it is shown that the curvature blows up due to the conto…
We derive regularized contour dynamics equations for the motion of infinite sharp fronts in the two-dimensional incompressible Euler, surface quasi-geostrophic (SQG), and generalized surface quasi-geostrophic (gSQG) equations. We derive a cubic approximation of the contour dynamics equation and prove the short-time well-posedness of the approximate equations for generalized surface quasi-geostrophic fronts and weak well-posedness for surface quasi-geostrophic fronts.
We prove the global existence of solutions with small and smooth initial data of a nonlinear dispersive equation for the motion of generalized surface quasi-geostrophic (GSQG) fronts in a parameter regime $1<α<2$, where $α=1$ corresponds to the SQG equation and $α=2$ corresponds to the incompressible Euler equations. This result completes previous global well-posedness results for $0<α\le 1$. We also use contour dynamics to derive the GSQG front equations for $1<α<2$.
We use contour dynamics to derive equations of motion for infinite planar surface quasi-geostrophic (SQG) fronts, and show that it leads to the same result as a regularization procedure introduced previously by Hunter and Shu (2018).
We consider a nonlinear, spatially-nonlocal initial value problem in one space dimension on $\mathbb{R}$ that describes the motion of surface quasi-geostrophic (SQG) fronts. We prove that the initial value problem has a unique local smooth solution under a convergence condition on the multilinear expansion of the nonlinear term in the equation, and, for sufficiently smooth and small initial data, we prove that the solution is global.
We consider the asymptotic behavior of the surface quasi-geostrophic equation, subject to a small external force. Under suitable assumptions on the forcing, we first construct the steady states and we provide a number of useful a posteriori estimates for them. Importantly, to do so, we only impose minimal cancellation conditions on the forcing function. Our main result is that all $L^1\cap L^\infty$ localized initial data produces global solutions of the forced SQG, which converge to the steady states in $L^p(\mathbf R^2), 1<p\leq 2$ as time goes to infinity. This establishes that the steady s…
We study KPP pulsating front speed-up and effective diffusivity enhancement by general periodic incompressible flows. We prove the existence of and determine the limits $c^*(A)/A$ and $D(A)/A^2$ as $A\to\infty$, where $c^*(A)$ is the minimal front speed and $D(A)$ the effective diffusivity.
We consider a family of contour dynamics equations depending on a parameter $\al$ with $0<α\leq 1$. The vortex patch problem of the 2-D Euler equation is obtained taking $α\to 0$, and the case $α=1$ corresponds to a sharp front of the QG equation. We prove local-in-time existence for the family of equations in Sobolev spaces.
For the classical reaction diffusion equation, the priori speed of fronts is determined exactly in the pioneering paper (R.D. Benguria and M.C. Depassier, {\em Commun. Math. Phys.} 175:221--227, 1996) by variational characterization method. In this paper, we model the dispersal process using a density-dependent diffusion equation with time delay. We show the existence and uniqueness of sharp critical fronts, where the sharp critical front is $C^1$-smooth when the diffusion degeneracy is weaker with $1<m<2$, and the sharp critical front is non-$C^1$-smooth (piecewise smooth) when the diffusion …
The paper is devoted to the study of slightly supercritical active scalars with nonlocal diffusion. We prove global regularity for the surface quasi-geostrophic (SQG) and Burgers equations, when the diffusion term is supercritical by a symbol with roughly logarithmic behavior at infinity. We show that the result is sharp for the Burgers equation. We also prove global regularity for a slightly supercritical two-dimensional Euler equation. Our main tool is a nonlocal maximum principle which controls a certain modulus of continuity of the solutions.
This paper is concerned with the critical sharp traveling wave for doubly nonlinear diffusion equation with time delay, where the doubly nonlinear degenerate diffusion is defined by $\Big(\big|(u^m)_x\big|^{p-2}(u^m)_x\Big)_x$ with $m>0$ and $p>1$. The doubly nonlinear diffusion equation is proved to admit a unique sharp type traveling wave for the degenerate case $m(p-1)>1$, the so-called slow-diffusion case. This sharp traveling wave associated with the minimal wave speed $c^*(m,p,r)$ is monotonically increasing, where the minimal wave speed satisfies $c^*(m,p,r)<c^*(m,p,0)$ for any time del…
We study the rate of growth of sharp fronts of the Quasi-geostrophic equation and 2D incompressible Euler equations.. The development of sharp fronts are due to a mechanism that piles up level sets very fast. Under a semi-uniform collapse, we obtain a lower bound on the minimum distance between the level sets.
We study transition fronts for one-dimensional reaction-diffusion equations with compactly perturbed ignition-monostable reactions. We establish an almost sharp condition on reactions which characterizes the existence and non-existence of fronts. In particular, we prove that a strong inhomogeneity in the reaction prevents formation of transition fronts, while a weak inhomogeneity gives rise to a front. Our work extends results and methods introduced by J. Nolen, J.M. Roquejoffre, L. Ryzhik, and A. Zlatoš.

We consider a Fisher-KPP equation with density-dependent diffusion and advection, arising from a chemotaxis-growth model. We study its behavior as a small parameter, related to the thickness of a diffuse interface, tends to zero. We analyze, for small times, the emergence of transition layers induced by a balance between reaction and drift effects. Then we investigate the propagation of the layers. Convergence to a free-boundary limit problem is proved and a sharp estimate of the thickness of the layers is provided.
We revisit the nonlinear stability of the critical invasion front in the Ginzburg-Landau equation. Our main result shows that the amplitude of localized perturbations decays with rate $t^{-3/2}$, while the phase decays diffusively. We thereby refine earlier work of Bricmont and Kupiainen as well as Eckmann and Wayne, who separately established nonlinear stability but with slower decay rates. On a technical level, we rely on sharp linear estimates obtained through analysis of the resolvent near the essential spectrum via a far-field/core decomposition which is well suited to accurately describi…
In this paper, we introduce a generalization of Liu-Yang's weighted norm to linear and to nonlinear hyperbolic equations. Extending a result by Hu and LeFloch for piecewise constant solutions, we establish sharp L1 continuous dependence estimates for general solutions of bounded variation. Two different strategies are successfully investigated. On one hand, we justify passing to the limit in an L1 estimate valid for piecewise constant wave-front tracking approximations. On the other hand, we use the technique of generalized characteristics and, following closely an approach by Dafermos, we der…
We study the large time behaviour of the Fisher-KPP equation $\partial$ t u = $Δ$u + u -- u 2 in spatial dimension N , when the initial datum is compactly supported. We prove the existence of a Lipschitz function s of the unit sphere, such that u(t, x) converges, as t goes to infinity, to U c * |x| -- c * t + N + 2 c * lnt + s $\infty$ x |x| , where U c * is the 1D travelling front with minimal speed c * = 2. This extends an earlier result of G{ä}rtner.
We consider a scalar parabolic equation in one spatial dimension. The equation is constituted by a convective term, a reaction term with one or two equilibria, and a positive diffusivity which can however vanish. We prove the existence and several properties of traveling-wave solutions to such an equation. In particular, we provide a sharp estimate for the minimal speed of the profiles and improve previous results about the regularity of wavefronts. Moreover, we show the existence of an infinite number of semi-wavefronts with the same speed.
We investigate the large-time dynamics of solutions of multi-dimensional reaction-diffusion equations with ignition type nonlinearities. We consider solutions which are in some sense locally persistent at large time and initial data which asymptotically oscillate around the ignition threshold. We show that, as time goes to infinity, any solution either converges uniformly in space to a constant state, or spreads with a finite speed uniformly in all directions. Furthermore, the transition between these two behaviors is sharp with respect to the period vector of the asymptotic profile of the ini…
We study the asymptotic behavior of solutions to a monostable integro-differential Fisher-KPP equation , that is where the standard Laplacian is replaced by a convolution term, when the dispersal kernel is fat-tailed. We focus on two different regimes. Firstly, we study the long time/long range scaling limit by introducing a relevant rescaling in space and time and prove a sharp bound on the (super-linear) spreading rate in the Hamilton-Jacobi sense by means of sub-and super-solutions. Secondly, we investigate a long time/small mutation regime for which, after identifying a relevant rescaling …
We study nonlinear stability of pulled fronts in scalar parabolic equations on the real line of arbitrary order, under conceptual assumptions on existence and spectral stability of fronts. In this general setting, we establish sharp algebraic decay rates and temporal asymptotics of perturbations to the front. Some of these results are known for the specific example of the Fisher-KPP equation, and our results can thus be viewed as establishing universality of some aspects of this simple model. We also give a precise description of how the spatial localization of perturbations to the front affec…
We revisit the existence and stability of the critical front in the extended Fisher-KPP equation, refining earlier results of Rottschäfer and Wayne [28] which establish stability of fronts without identifying a precise decay rate. We verify that the front is marginally spectrally stable: while the essential spectrum touches the imaginary axis at the origin, there are no unstable eigenvalues and no eigenvalue (or resonance) embedded in the essential spectrum at the origin. Together with the recent work of Avery and Scheel [3], this implies nonlinear stability of the critical front with sharp $t…
We consider a class of singularly perturbed 2-component reaction-diffusion equations which admit bistable traveling front solutions, manifesting as sharp, slow-fast-slow, interfaces between stable homogeneous rest states. In many example systems, such as models of desertification fronts in dryland ecosystems, such fronts can exhibit an instability by which the interface destabilizes into fingering patterns. Motivated by the appearance of such patterns, we propose two versions of a 2D stability criterion for (transversal) long wavelength perturbations along the interface of these traveling slow…
We describe acceleration of the front propagation for solutions to a class of monostable nonlinear equations with a nonlocal diffusion in $\mathbb{R}^d$, $d\geq1$. We show that the acceleration takes place if either the diffusion kernel or the initial condition has 'regular' heavy tails in $\mathbb{R}^d$ (in particular, decays slower than exponentially). Under general assumptions which can be verified for particular models, we present sharp estimates for the time-space zone which separates the region of convergence to the unstable zero solution with the region of convergence to the stable posi…
