For the classical reaction diffusion equation, the priori speed of fronts is determined exactly in the pioneering paper (R.D. Benguria and M.C. Depassier, {\em Commun. Math. Phys.} 175:221--227, 1996) by variational characterization method. In this paper, we model the dispersal process using a density-dependent diffusion equation with time delay. We show the existence and uniqueness of sharp critical fronts, where the sharp critical front is $C^1$-smooth when the diffusion degeneracy is weaker with $1<m<2$, and the sharp critical front is non-$C^1$-smooth (piecewise smooth) when the diffusion degeneracy is stronger with $m\ge 2$. We give a new variational approach for the critical wave speed and investigate how the time delay affects the propagation mechanism of fronts. Our results provide some interesting insight into the dynamics of critical traveling wave.
In this paper we consider a family of active scalars with a velocity field given by $u = Λ^{-1+α}\nabla^{\perp} θ$, for $α\in (0,1)$. This family of equations is a more singular version of the two-dimensional Surface Quasi-Geostrophic (SQG) equation, which would correspond to $α=0$. We consider the evolution of sharp fronts by studying families of almost-sharp fronts. These are smooth solutions with simple geometry in which a sharp transition in the solution occurs in a tubular neighbourhood (of size $δ$). We study their evolution and that of compatible curves, and introduce the notion of a sp…
Patch solutions for the surface quasigeostrophic (SQG) equation model sharp temperature fronts in atmospheric and oceanic flows. We establish local well-posedness for SQG sharp fronts of low Sobolev regularity, $H^{2+s}$ for arbitrarily small $s>0$, allowing for fronts with unbounded curvature.
We derive regularized contour dynamics equations for the motion of infinite sharp fronts in the two-dimensional incompressible Euler, surface quasi-geostrophic (SQG), and generalized surface quasi-geostrophic (gSQG) equations. We derive a cubic approximation of the contour dynamics equation and prove the short-time well-posedness of the approximate equations for generalized surface quasi-geostrophic fronts and weak well-posedness for surface quasi-geostrophic fronts.
Guided by numerical simulations, we present the proof of two results concerning the behaviour of SQG sharp fronts and $α$-patches. We establish that ellipses are not rotational solutions and we prove that initially convex interfaces may lose this property in finite time.
We study KPP pulsating front speed-up and effective diffusivity enhancement by general periodic incompressible flows. We prove the existence of and determine the limits $c^*(A)/A$ and $D(A)/A^2$ as $A\to\infty$, where $c^*(A)$ is the minimal front speed and $D(A)$ the effective diffusivity.
We consider a family of contour dynamics equations depending on a parameter $\al$ with $0<α\leq 1$. The vortex patch problem of the 2-D Euler equation is obtained taking $α\to 0$, and the case $α=1$ corresponds to a sharp front of the QG equation. We prove local-in-time existence for the family of equations in Sobolev spaces.
We consider solutions of the KPP-type equations with a periodically varying reaction rate, and compactly supported initial data. It has been shown by M. Bramson in the case of the constant reaction rate that the lag between the position of such solutions and that of the traveling waves grows as (3/2) log(t). We generalize this result to the periodic case
We consider the non-monotone degenerate diffusion equation with time delay. Different from the linear diffusion equation, the degenerate equation allows for semi-compactly supported traveling waves. In particular, we discover sharp-oscillating waves with sharp edges and non-decaying oscillations. The degenerate diffusion and the effect of time delay cause us essential difficulties. We show the existence for both sharp and smooth traveling wave solutions. Furthermore, we prove the oscillating properties of the waves for large wave speeds and large time delay. Since the existing approaches are n…
This article is concerned with a system of semilinear parabolic equations with two free boundaries describing the spreading fronts of the invasive species in a mutualistic ecological model. The local existence and uniqueness of a classical solution are obtained and the asymptotic behavior of the free boundary problem is studied. Our results indicate that two free boundaries tend monotonically to finite or infinite at the same time, and the free boundary problem admits a global slow solution with unbounded free boundaries if the inter-specific competitions are strong, while if the inter-specifi…
In this paper, we prove local existence and uniqueness of analytic sharp-front solutions to a generalised SQG equation by the use of an abstract Cauchy--Kowalevskaya theorem. Here, the velocity is determined by $u = |\nabla|^{-2β}\nabla^\perpθ$ which (for $1<β\leq 2$) is more singular than in SQG. This is achieved despite the appearance of pseudodifferential operators of order higher than one in our equation, by recasting our equation in a suitable integral form. We also provide a full proof of the abstract version of the Cauchy--Kowalevskaya theorem we use.
We consider positive travelling fronts of the time-delayed reaction-diffusion equation with the monostable birth function. Our main result says that for every fixed and sufficiently large velocity c, the positive travelling front is unique (modulo translations). To prove the uniqueness, we introduce a small parameter 1/c and realize the Lyapunov-Schmidt reduction in a scale of Banach spaces.
This paper is concerned with the globally exponential stability of traveling wave fronts for a class of population dynamics model with quiescent stage and delay. First, we establish the comparison principle of solutions for the population dynamics model. Then, by the weighted energy method combining comparison principle, the globally exponential stability of traveling wave fronts of the population dynamics model under the quasi-monotonicity conditions is established.
This paper is concerned with the critical sharp traveling wave for doubly nonlinear diffusion equation with time delay, where the doubly nonlinear degenerate diffusion is defined by $\Big(\big|(u^m)_x\big|^{p-2}(u^m)_x\Big)_x$ with $m>0$ and $p>1$. The doubly nonlinear diffusion equation is proved to admit a unique sharp type traveling wave for the degenerate case $m(p-1)>1$, the so-called slow-diffusion case. This sharp traveling wave associated with the minimal wave speed $c^*(m,p,r)$ is monotonically increasing, where the minimal wave speed satisfies $c^*(m,p,r)<c^*(m,p,0)$ for any time del…
We analyse dissipative boundary conditions for nonlinear hyperbolic systems in one space dimension. We show that a previous known sufficient condition for exponential stability with respect to the C^1-norm is optimal. In particular a known weaker sufficient condition for exponential stability with respect to the H^2-norm is not sufficient for the exponential stability with respect to the C^1-norm. Hence, due to the nonlinearity, even in the case of classical solutions, the exponential stability depends strongly on the norm considered. We also give a new sufficient condition for the exponential…
We study the asymptotic stability of traveling fronts and front's velocity selection problem for the time-delayed monostable equation $(*)$ $u_{t}(t,x) = u_{xx}(t,x) - u(t,x) + g(u(t-h,x)),\ x \in \mathbb{R},\ t >0$, considered with Lipschitz continuous reaction term $g: \mathbb{R}_+ \to \mathbb{R}_+$. We are also assuming that $g$ is $C^{1,α}$-smooth in some neighbourhood of the equilibria $0$ and $κ>0$ to $(*)$. In difference with the previous works, we do not impose any convexity or subtangency condition on the graph of $g$ so that equation $(*)$ can possess pushed traveling fronts. Our fir…

We consider the non-local Fisher-KPP equation modeling a population with individuals competing with each other for resources with a strength related to their distance, and obtain the asymptotics for the position of the invasion front starting from a localized population. Depending on the behavior of the competition kernel at infinity, the location of the front is either $2t - ({3}/2)\log t + O(1)$, as in the local case, or $2t - O(t^β)$ for some explicit $β\in (0,1)$. Our main tools here are alocal-in-time Harnack inequality and an analysis of the linearized problem with a suitable moving Diri…
We study the existence and uniqueness of wavefronts to the scalar reaction-diffusion equations $u_{t}(t,x) = Δu(t,x) - u(t,x) + g(u(t-h,x)),$ with monotone delayed reaction term $g: \R_+ \to \R_+$ and $h >0$. We are mostly interested in the situation when the graph of $g$ is not dominated by its tangent line at zero, i.e. when the condition $g(x) \leq g'(0)x,$ $x \geq 0$, is not satisfied. It is well known that, in such a case, a special type of rapidly decreasing wavefronts (pushed fronts) can appear in non-delayed equations (i.e. with $h=0$). One of our main goals here is to establish a simi…
We are concerned with a class of degenerate diffusion equations with time delay describing population dynamics with age structure. In our recent study [{\em Nonlinearity}, 33 (2020), 4013--4029], we established the existence and uniqueness of critical traveling wave for the time-delayed degenerate diffusion equations, and obtained the reducing mechanism of time delay on critical wave speed. In this paper, we now are able to show the asymptotic spreading speed and its coincidence with the critical wave speed $c^*(m,r)$ of sharp wave, and prove that the initial perturbation or the boundary of th…
We study the rate of growth of sharp fronts of the Quasi-geostrophic equation and 2D incompressible Euler equations.. The development of sharp fronts are due to a mechanism that piles up level sets very fast. Under a semi-uniform collapse, we obtain a lower bound on the minimum distance between the level sets.
We study the Mackey-Glass type monostable delayed reaction-diffusion equation with a unimodal birth function $g(u)$. This model, designed to describe evolution of single species populations, is considered here in the presence of the weak Allee effect ($g(u_0)>g'(0)u_0$ for some $u_0>0$). We focus our attention on the existence of slow monotonic traveling fronts to the equation: under given assumptions, this problem seems to be rather difficult since the usual positivity and monotonicity arguments are not effective. First, we solve the front existence problem for small delays, $h \in [0,h_p]$, …
We revisit the nonlinear stability of the critical invasion front in the Ginzburg-Landau equation. Our main result shows that the amplitude of localized perturbations decays with rate $t^{-3/2}$, while the phase decays diffusively. We thereby refine earlier work of Bricmont and Kupiainen as well as Eckmann and Wayne, who separately established nonlinear stability but with slower decay rates. On a technical level, we rely on sharp linear estimates obtained through analysis of the resolvent near the essential spectrum via a far-field/core decomposition which is well suited to accurately describi…
We study transition fronts for one-dimensional reaction-diffusion equations with compactly perturbed ignition-monostable reactions. We establish an almost sharp condition on reactions which characterizes the existence and non-existence of fronts. In particular, we prove that a strong inhomogeneity in the reaction prevents formation of transition fronts, while a weak inhomogeneity gives rise to a front. Our work extends results and methods introduced by J. Nolen, J.M. Roquejoffre, L. Ryzhik, and A. Zlatoš.

In this paper for either the sharp front Surface Quasi-Geostrophic equation or the Muskat problem we rule out the "splash singularity" blow-up scenario; in other words we prove that the contours evolving from either of these systems can not intersect at a single point while the free boundary remains smooth. Splash singularities have been shown to hold for the free boundary incompressible Euler equation in the form of the water waves contour evolution problem \cite{ADCPJ}. Our result confirms the numerical simulations in \cite{CFMR} where it is shown that the curvature blows up due to the conto…
We study nonlinear stability of pulled fronts in scalar parabolic equations on the real line of arbitrary order, under conceptual assumptions on existence and spectral stability of fronts. In this general setting, we establish sharp algebraic decay rates and temporal asymptotics of perturbations to the front. Some of these results are known for the specific example of the Fisher-KPP equation, and our results can thus be viewed as establishing universality of some aspects of this simple model. We also give a precise description of how the spatial localization of perturbations to the front affec…
Using pointwise semigroup techniques, we establish sharp rates of decay in space and time of a perturbed reaction diffusion front to its time-asymptotic limit. This recovers results of Sattinger, Henry and others of time-exponential convergence in weighted $L^p$ and Sobolev norms, while capturing the new feature of spatial diffusion at Gaussian rate. Novel features of the argument are a point-wise Green function decomposition reconciling spectral decomposition and short-time Nash-Aronson estimates and an instantaneous tracking scheme similar to that used in the study of stability of viscous sh…
We consider a Fisher-KPP equation with density-dependent diffusion and advection, arising from a chemotaxis-growth model. We study its behavior as a small parameter, related to the thickness of a diffuse interface, tends to zero. We analyze, for small times, the emergence of transition layers induced by a balance between reaction and drift effects. Then we investigate the propagation of the layers. Convergence to a free-boundary limit problem is proved and a sharp estimate of the thickness of the layers is provided.
In this paper, we introduce a generalization of Liu-Yang's weighted norm to linear and to nonlinear hyperbolic equations. Extending a result by Hu and LeFloch for piecewise constant solutions, we establish sharp L1 continuous dependence estimates for general solutions of bounded variation. Two different strategies are successfully investigated. On one hand, we justify passing to the limit in an L1 estimate valid for piecewise constant wave-front tracking approximations. On the other hand, we use the technique of generalized characteristics and, following closely an approach by Dafermos, we der…
We study the large time behaviour of the Fisher-KPP equation $\partial$ t u = $Δ$u + u -- u 2 in spatial dimension N , when the initial datum is compactly supported. We prove the existence of a Lipschitz function s of the unit sphere, such that u(t, x) converges, as t goes to infinity, to U c * |x| -- c * t + N + 2 c * lnt + s $\infty$ x |x| , where U c * is the 1D travelling front with minimal speed c * = 2. This extends an earlier result of G{ä}rtner.
We consider equation $u_t(t,x) = Δu(t,x)- u(t,x) + g(u(t-h,x)) (*) $, when $g:\R_+\to \R_+$ has exactly two fixed points: $x_1= 0$ and $x_2=κ>0$. Assuming that $g$ is unimodal and has negative Schwarzian, we indicate explicitly a closed interval $\mathcal{C} = \mathcal{C}(h,g'(0),g'(κ)) = [c_*,c^*]$ such that $(*)$ has at least one (possibly, nonmonotone) travelling front propagating at velocity $c$ for every $c \in \mathcal{C}$. Here $c_*>0$ is finite and $c^* \in \R_+ \cup \{+\infty\}$. Every time when $\mathcal{C}$ is not empty, the minimal bound $c_*$ is sharp so that there are not wavefro…
We study the asymptotic behaviour of sharp front solutions arising from the nonlinear diffusion equation θ_t = (D(θ)θ_x)_x, where the diffusivity is an exponential function D(θ) = D_o exp(βθ). This problem arises for example in the study of unsaturated flow in porous media where θ represents the liquid saturation. For physical parameters corresponding to actual porous media, the diffusivity at the residual saturation is D(0) = D_o << 1 so that the diffusion problem is nearly degenerate. Such problems are characterised by wetting fronts that sharply delineate regions of saturated and unsaturate…
We revisit the existence and stability of the critical front in the extended Fisher-KPP equation, refining earlier results of Rottschäfer and Wayne [28] which establish stability of fronts without identifying a precise decay rate. We verify that the front is marginally spectrally stable: while the essential spectrum touches the imaginary axis at the origin, there are no unstable eigenvalues and no eigenvalue (or resonance) embedded in the essential spectrum at the origin. Together with the recent work of Avery and Scheel [3], this implies nonlinear stability of the critical front with sharp $t…
We consider a controlled reaction-diffusion equation, motivated by a pest eradication problem. Our goal is to derive a simpler model, describing the controlled evolution of a contaminated set. In this direction, the first part of the paper studies the optimal control of 1-dimensional traveling wave profiles. Using Stokes' formula, explicit solutions are obtained, which in some cases require measure-valued optimal controls. In the last section we introduce a family of optimization problems for a moving set. We show how these can be derived from the original parabolic problems, by taking a sharp…
In this paper we study travelling front solutions for nonlocal equations of the type \begin{equation} \partial_t u = N * S(u) + \nabla F(u), \qquad u(t,x) \in \mathbf{R}^d. \end{equation} Here $N *$ denotes a convolution-type operator in the spatial variable $x \in \mathbf{R}$, either continuous or discrete. We develop a Morse-type theory, the Conley--Floer homology, which captures travelling front solutions in a topologically robust manner, by encoding fronts in the boundary operator of a chain complex. The equations describing the travelling fronts involve both forward and backward delay ter…
We study, in dimensions $N\geq 3$, the family of first integrals of an incompressible flow: these are $H^{1}_{loc}$ functions whose level surfaces are tangent to the streamlines of the advective incompressible field. One main motivation for this study comes from earlier results proving that the existence of nontrivial first integrals of an incompressible flow $q$ is the main key that leads to a "linear speed up" by a large advection of pulsating traveling fronts solving a reaction-advection-diffusion equation in a periodic heterogeneous framework. The family of first integrals is not well unde…
