We are concerned with a class of degenerate diffusion equations with time delay describing population dynamics with age structure. In our recent study [{\em Nonlinearity}, 33 (2020), 4013--4029], we established the existence and uniqueness of critical traveling wave for the time-delayed degenerate diffusion equations, and obtained the reducing mechanism of time delay on critical wave speed. In this paper, we now are able to show the asymptotic spreading speed and its coincidence with the critical wave speed $c^*(m,r)$ of sharp wave, and prove that the initial perturbation or the boundary of the compact support of the solution propagates at the critical wave speed $c^*(m,r)$ for the time-delayed degenerate diffusion equations. Remarkably, different from the existing studies related to spreading speeds, the time delay and the degenerate diffusion lead to some essential difficulties in the analysis of the spreading speed, because the time-delay makes the critical speed of traveling waves slow down, and the degenerate diffusion causes the loss of regularity for the solutions. By a phase transform technique combined with the monotone method, we can determine the asymptotic spreading speed. Furthermore, we propose a brand-new sharp-profile-based difference scheme to handle large variation of degenerate diffusion $(u^m)_{xx}$ near the sharp edge and carry out some numerical simulations which perfectly confirm our theoretical results.
We consider the non-monotone degenerate diffusion equation with time delay. Different from the linear diffusion equation, the degenerate equation allows for semi-compactly supported traveling waves. In particular, we discover sharp-oscillating waves with sharp edges and non-decaying oscillations. The degenerate diffusion and the effect of time delay cause us essential difficulties. We show the existence for both sharp and smooth traveling wave solutions. Furthermore, we prove the oscillating properties of the waves for large wave speeds and large time delay. Since the existing approaches are n…
This paper is concerned with the critical sharp traveling wave for doubly nonlinear diffusion equation with time delay, where the doubly nonlinear degenerate diffusion is defined by $\Big(\big|(u^m)_x\big|^{p-2}(u^m)_x\Big)_x$ with $m>0$ and $p>1$. The doubly nonlinear diffusion equation is proved to admit a unique sharp type traveling wave for the degenerate case $m(p-1)>1$, the so-called slow-diffusion case. This sharp traveling wave associated with the minimal wave speed $c^*(m,p,r)$ is monotonically increasing, where the minimal wave speed satisfies $c^*(m,p,r)<c^*(m,p,0)$ for any time del…
We consider a degenerate abstract wave equation with a time-dependent propagation speed. We investigate the influence of a strong dissipation, namely a friction term that depends on a power of the elastic operator. We discover a threshold effect. If the propagation speed is regular enough, then the damping prevails, and therefore the initial value problem is well-posed in Sobolev spaces. Solutions also exhibit a regularizing effect analogous to parabolic problems. As expected, the stronger is the damping, the lower is the required regularity. On the contrary, if the propagation speed is not re…
Incorporating free boundary into time-delayed reaction-diffusion equations yields a compatible condition that guarantees the well-posedness of the initial value problem. With the KPP type nonlinearity we then establish a vanishing-spreading dichotomy result. Further, when the spreading happens, we show that the spreading speed and spreading profile are nonlinearly determined by a delay-induced nonlocal semi-wave problem. It turns out that time delay slows down the spreading speed.
We consider the following Keller-Segel system of degenerate type: \partial u / \partial t = \partial / \partial x (\partial u^m / \partial x - u^{q-1} \cdot \partial v / \partial x), x \in \R, t>0, \partial^2 v / \partial x^2 - γv + u, x \in \R, t>0, u(x,0) = u_0(x), x \in \R, where $m>1, γ> 0, q \ge 2m$. We shall first construct a weak solution $u(x,t)$ of (KS) such that $u^{m-1}$ is Lipschitz continuous and such that $\displaystyle u^{m-1+δ}$ for $δ>0$ is of class $C^1$ with respect to the space variable $x$. As a by-product, we prove the property of finite speed of propagation of a weak sol…
We consider the propagation of a flame front in a solid periodic medium. The model is governed by a free boundary system in which the front's velocity depends on the temperature via a kinetic rate which may degenerate. We show the existence of travelling wave solutions which are bounded and global. Previous results by the same authors (cf. Alibaud, Namah, On the propagation of a periodic flame front by an Arrhenius kinetic,{\it Interfaces Free Bound.,} 2017) were obtained for essentially positively lower bounded kinetics or eventually which have some very weak degeneracy. Here we consider gene…
We considered the qualitative behavior of the generalization of Einstein's model of Brownian motion when the key parameter of the time interval of \textit{free jump} degenerates. Fluids will be characterized by the number of particles per unit volume (density of fluid) at the point of observation. Degeneration of the phenomenon manifests in two scenarios: a) flow of the fluid, which is highly dispersing like a non-dense gas, and b) flow of fluid far away from the source of flow, when the velocity of the flow is incomparably smaller than the gradient of the density. First, we will show that bot…
Motivated by tumor growth in Cancer Biology, we provide a complete analysis of existence and non-existence of invasive fronts for the reduced Gatenby--Gawlinski model \[ \partial_t U = U\{f(U)-dV\}, \qquad \partial_t V = \partial_x \{f(U)\,\partial_x V\} + r V f(V), \] where $f(u) = 1-u$ and the parameters $d,r$ are positive. Denoting by $(\mathcal{U},\mathcal{V})$ the traveling wave profile and by $(\mathcal{U}_\pm,\mathcal{V}_\pm)$ its asymptotic states at $\pm\infty$, we investigate existence in the regimes i) $d > 1$ (homogeneous invasion) : $(\mathcal{U}_-,\mathcal{V}_-) = (0,1)$, $(\math…
In this paper, under an abstract setting we establish the existence of spatially inhomogeneous steady states and the asymptotic propagation properties for a large class of monotone evolution systems without spatial translation invariance. Then we apply the developed theory to study traveling waves and spatio-temporal propagation patterns for time-delayed nonlocal equations, reaction-diffusion equations in a cylinder, and asymptotically homogeneous KPP-type equations. We also obtain the existence of steady state solutions and asymptotic spreading properties of solutions for a time-delayed reacti…
We consider a nonlinear wave equation with nonconstant coefficients. In particular, the coefficient in front of the second order space derivative is degenerate. We give the blow-up behavior and the regularity of the blow-up set. Partial results are given at the origin, where the degeneracy occurs. Some nontrivial obstacles, due to the nonconstant speed of propagation, have to be surmounted.
The Jordan--Moore--Gibson--Thompson (JMGT) equation is a well-established and recently widely studied model for nonlinear acoustics (NLA). It is a third-order (in time) semilinear Partial Differential Equation (PDE) model with the distinctive feature of predicting the propagation of ultrasound waves at \textit{finite} speed due to heat phenomenon know as \textit{second sound} which leads to the hyperbolic character of heat propagation. In this paper, we consider the problem of stabilizability of the linear (known as) MGT--equation. We consider a special geometry that is suitable for studying t…

We construct a counterexample to $W^{2,1}$ regularity for convex solutions to $$\det D^2u \leq 1, \quad u|_{\partial Ω} = 0$$ in two dimensions. We also prove a result on the propagation of singularities in two dimensions that are logarithmically slower than Lipschitz. This generalizes a classical result of Alexandrov and is optimal by example.
We show that a double degenerate thin film equation, which originated from modeling of viscous coating flow on a spherical surface, has finite speed of propagation for nonnegative strong solutions and hence there exists an interface or free boundary separating the regions where solution $u>0$ and $u=0$. Using local entropy estimates we also obtain an upper bound for the rate of the interface propagation.
We study existence and stability of travelling waves for nonlinear convection diffusion equations in the 1-D Euclidean space. The diffusion coefficient depends on the gradient in analogy with the p-Laplacian and may be degenerate. Unconditional stability is established with respect to initial data perturbations in the Lebesgue space of integrable functions.
We consider the degenerate Einstein's Brownian motion model for the case when the time interval ($τ$) of particle Jumps before collision (free jumps) reciprocal to the number of particles per unit volume $u(x,t) > 0$ at the point of observation $x$ at time $t$. The parameter $0 < τ\leq C < \infty$, controls characteristic of the fluid "almost decreases" to $ 0 $ when $u \rightarrow \infty$. This degeneration leads to the localisation of the spread of particle propagation in the media. In our report we will present a structural condition of the time interval of free jumps - $τ$ and the frequenc…
In this note, we give constructive upper and lower bounds for the minimal speed of propagation of traveling waves for non-local delayed reaction-diffusion equation.
We establish interior Lipschitz regularity for continuous viscosity solutions of fully nonlinear, conformally invariant, degenerate elliptic equations. As a by-product of our method, we also prove a weak form of the strong comparison principle, which we refer to as the principle of propagation of touching points, for operators of the form $\nabla^2 ψ+ L(x,ψ,\nabla ψ)$ which are non-decreasing in $ψ$.
