This paper is concerned with the globally exponential stability of traveling wave fronts for a class of population dynamics model with quiescent stage and delay. First, we establish the comparison principle of solutions for the population dynamics model. Then, by the weighted energy method combining comparison principle, the globally exponential stability of traveling wave fronts of the population dynamics model under the quasi-monotonicity conditions is established.
We consider a one-dimensional Swift-Hohenberg equation coupled to a conservation law, where both equations contain additional dispersive terms breaking the reflection symmetry $x \mapsto -x$. This system exhibits a Turing instability and we study the dynamics close to the onset of this instability. First, we show that periodic traveling waves bifurcate from a homogeneous ground state. Second, fixing the bifurcation parameter close to the onset of instability, we construct modulating traveling fronts, which capture the process of pattern-formation by modeling the transition from the homogeneous…
We consider the one-dimensional Swift-Hohenberg equation coupled to a conservation law. As a parameter increases the system undergoes a Turing bifurcation. We study the dynamics near this bifurcation. First, we show that stationary, periodic solutions bifurcate from a homogeneous ground state. Second, we construct modulating traveling fronts which model an invasion of the unstable ground state by the periodic solutions. This provides a mechanism of pattern formation for the studied system. The existence proof uses center manifold theory for a reduction to a finite-dimensional problem. This is …
A unified geometric approach for the stability analysis of traveling pulse solutions for reaction-diffusion equations with skew-gradient structure has been established in a previous paper [9], but essentially no results have been found in the case of traveling front solutions. In this work, we will bridge this gap. For such cases, a Maslov index of the traveling wave is well-defined, and we will show how it can be used to provide the spectral information of the waves. As an application, we use the same index providing the exact number of unstable eigenvalues of the traveling front solutions of…
Traveling oscillating fronts (TOFs) are specific waves of the form $U_\star (x,t) = e^{-i ωt} V_\star(x - ct)$ with a profile $V_{\star}$ which decays at $- \infty$ but approaches a nonzero limit at $+\infty$. TOFs usually appear in complex Ginzburg Landau equations of the type $U_t = αU_{xx} + G(|U|^2)U$. In this paper we prove a theorem on the asymptotic stability of TOFs, where we allow the initial perturbation to be the sum of an exponentially localized part and a front-like part which approaches a small but nonzero limit at $+ \infty$. The underlying assumptions guarantee that the operato…
We rigorously prove the existence of traveling fronts in neural field models with lateral inhibition coupling types and smooth sigmoidal firing rates. With Heaviside firing rates as our base point (where unique traveling fronts exist), we repeatedly apply the implicit function theorem in Banach spaces to provide a non-monotone version of the homotopy approach originally proposed by Ermentrout and McLeod (1993) in their seminal study of monotone fronts in purely excitatory models. By comparing smooth and Heaviside firing rates, we develop global wave speed and profile comparisons that guide our…
We establish the existence of a stable foliation in the vicinity of a traveling front solution for systems of reaction diffusion equations in one space dimension that arise in the study of chemical reactions models and solid fuel combustion. In this way we complement the orbital stability results from earlier papers by A. Ghazaryan, S. Schecter and Y. Latushkin. The essential spectrum of the differential operator obtained by linearization at the front touches the imaginary axis. In spaces with exponential weights, one can shift the spectrum to the left. We study the nonlinear equation on the i…

Traveling fronts and stationary localized patterns in bistable reaction-diffusion systems have been broadly studied for classical continuous media and regular lattices. Analogs of such non-equilibrium patterns are also possible in networks. Here, we consider traveling and stationary patterns in bistable one-component systems on random Erdös-Rényi, scale-free and hierarchical tree networks. As revealed through numerical simulations, traveling fronts exist in network-organized systems. They represent waves of transition from one stable state into another, spreading over the entire network. The f…
This paper is devoted to the study of spatial propagation dynamics of species in locally spatially inhomogeneous patchy environments or media. For a lattice differential equation with monostable nonlinearity in a discrete homogeneous media, it is well-known that there exists a minimal wave speed such that a traveling front exists if and only if the wave speed is not slower than this minimal wave speed. We shall show that strongly localized spatial inhomogeneous patchy environments may prevent the existence of transition fronts (generalized traveling fronts). Transition fronts may exist in weak…
We consider a class of singularly perturbed 2-component reaction-diffusion equations which admit bistable traveling front solutions, manifesting as sharp, slow-fast-slow, interfaces between stable homogeneous rest states. In many example systems, such as models of desertification fronts in dryland ecosystems, such fronts can exhibit an instability by which the interface destabilizes into fingering patterns. Motivated by the appearance of such patterns, we propose two versions of a 2D stability criterion for (transversal) long wavelength perturbations along the interface of these traveling slow…
The present paper is devoted to the study of existence, uniqueness and stability of transition fronts of nonlocal dispersal evolution equations in time heterogeneous media of bistable type under the unbalanced condition. We first study space nonincreasing transition fronts and prove various important qualitative properties, including uniform steepness, stability, uniform stability and exponential decaying estimates. Then, we show that any transition front, after certain space shift, coincides with a space nonincreasing transition front (if it exists), which implies the uniqueness, up to space …
In this paper, we investigate the existence, uniqueness, and spectral stability of traveling waves arising from a single threshold neural field model with one spatial dimension, a Heaviside firing rate function, axonal propagation delay, and biologically motivated oscillatory coupling types. Neuronal tracing studies show that long-ranged excitatory connections form stripe-like patterns throughout the mammalian cortex; thus, we aim to generalize the notions of pure excitation, lateral inhibition, and lateral excitation by allowing coupling types to spatially oscillate between excitation and inh…
This paper is devoted to study the wave propagation and its stability for a class of two-component discrete diffusive systems. We first establish the existence of positive monotone monostable traveling wave fronts. Then, applying the techniques of weighted energy method and the comparison principle, we show that all solutions of the Cauchy problem for the discrete diffusive systems converge exponentially to the traveling wave fronts when the initial perturbations around the wave fronts lie in a suitable weighted Sobolev space. Our main results can be extended to more general discrete diffusive…
The existence of traveling front solutions to bistable lattice differential equations in the absence of a comparison principle is studied. The results are in the spirit of those in Bates, Chen, and Chmaj in[1], but are applicable to vector equations and to more general limiting systems. An abstract result on the persistence of traveling wave solutions is obtained and is then applied to lattice differential equations with repelling first and/or second neighbor interactions and to some problems with infinite range interactions.
This paper deals with front propagation dynamics of monostable equations with nonlocal dispersal in spatially periodic habitats. In the authors' earlier works, it is shown that a general spatially periodic monostable equation with nonlocal dispersal has a unique spatially periodic positive stationary solution and has a spreading speed in every direction. In this paper, we show that a spatially periodic nonlocal monostable equation with certain spatial homogeneity or small nonlocal dispersal distance has a unique stable periodic traveling wave solutions connecting its unique spatially periodic …
We give an exhaustive characterization of singular weak solutions for ordinary differential equations of the form $\ddot{u}\,u + \frac{1}{2}\dot{u}^2 + F'(u) =0$, where $F$ is an analytic function. Our motivation stems from the fact that in the context of hydrodynamics several prominent equations are reducible to an equation of this form upon passing to a moving frame. We construct peaked and cusped waves, fronts with finite-time decay and compact solitary waves. We prove that one cannot obtain peaked and compactly supported traveling waves for the same equation. In particular, a peaked travel…
Presented is a data-driven Machine Learning (ML) framework for the identification and modeling of traveling wave spatiotemporal dynamics. The presented framework is based on the steadily-propagating traveling wave ansatz, $u(x,t) = U(ξ=x - ct + a)$. For known evolution equations, this coordinate transformation reduces governing partial differential equations (PDEs) to a set of coupled ordinary differential equations (ODEs) in the traveling wave coordinate $ξ$. Although traveling waves are readily observed in many physical systems, the underlying governing equations may be unknown. For these in…

Invasion waves are a fundamental building block of theoretical ecology. In this study we aim to take the first steps to link propagation failure and fast acceleration of traveling waves to critical transitions (or tipping points). The approach is based upon a detailed numerical study of various versions of the Fisher-Kolmogorov-Petrovskii-Piscounov (FKPP) equation. The main motivation of this work is to contribute to the following question: how much information do statistics, collected by a stationary observer, contain about the speed and bifurcations of traveling waves? We suggest warning sig…
In this paper we are concerned with the entire solutions for the classical competitive Lotka-Volterra system with diffusion in the weak competition. For this purpose we firstly analyze the asymptotic behavior of traveling front solutions for this system connecting the origin and the positive equilibrium. Then, by using two different ways to construct pairs of coupled super-sub solutions of this system, we obtain two different kinds of entire solutions. The construction of the first kind of entire solutions is based on these fronts, and their reflects as well as the solutions of the system with…
In 1992 G. B. Ermentrout and J. B. McLeod published a landmark study of traveling wave fronts for a differential-integral equation modeling a neural network. Since then a number of authors have extended the model by adding an additional equation for a "recovery variable", thus allowing the possibility of traveling pulse type solutions. In a recent paper G. Faye gave perhaps the first rigorous proof of the existence (and stability) of a traveling pulse solution for such a model. The excitatory weight function J used in this work allowed the system to be reduced to a set of four coupled ODEs, an…
