Poisson-Lie duality is a generalization of abelian and non-abelian T-duality, and it can be viewed as a map between solutions of the low-energy effective equations of string theory, i.e. at the (super)gravity level. We show that this fact extends to the next order in $α'$ (two loops in $σ$-model perturbation theory) provided that the map is corrected. The $α'$-correction to the map is induced by the anomalous Lorentz transformations of the fields that are necessary to go from a doubled $O(D,D)$-covariant formulation to the usual (super)gravity description.
Following the general formalism reviewed in 0810.5355 [hep-th] we present several examples of possible D3-brane configurations on four-dimensional generalized Kaehler geometries. We will discuss T-duality transformations in N = 2 boundary superspace and apply the duality transformations to the constructed D3-branes. The duality transformations lead to a systematic method to construct coisotropic branes, even on target spaces that are not hyper-Kaehler.
I review the relationship between AdS/CFT (anti-de Sitter / conformal field theory) dualities and the general theory of unitary lowest weight (ULWR) (positive energy) representations of non-compact space-time groups and supergroups. The ULWR's have the remarkable property that they can be constructed by tensoring some fundamental ULWR's (singletons or doubletons). Furthermore, one can go from the manifestly unitary compact basis of the ULWR's of the conformal group (Wigner picture) to the manifestly covariant coherent state basis (Dirac picture) labelled by the space-time coordinates. Hence ev…
Generalized dualities had an intriguing incursion into Double Field Theory (DFT) in terms of local $O(d,d)$ transformations. We review this idea and use the higher derivative formulation of DFT to compute the first order corrections to generalized dualities. Our main result is a unified expression that can be easily specified to any generalized T-duality (Abelian, non-Abelian, Poisson-Lie, etc.) or deformations such as Yang-Baxter, in any of the theories captured by the bi-parametric deformation (bosonic, heterotic strings and HSZ theory), in any supergravity scheme related by field redefiniti…
I review the relationship between AdS/CFT (anti-de Sitter / conformal field theory) dualities and the general theory of positive energy unitary representations of non-compact space-time groups and supergroups. I show, in particular, how one can go from the manifestly unitary compact basis of the lowest weight (positive energy) representations of the conformal group (Wigner picture) to the manifestly covariant coherent state basis (Dirac picture). The coherent states labelled by the space-time coordinates correspond to covariant fields with a definite conformal dimension. These results extend t…
We generalize the Giveon-Kutasov duality by adding possible Chern-Simons interactions for the $U(N)$ gauge group. Some of the generalized dualities are known in the literature and many others are new to the best of our knowledge. The dualities are connected to the non-supersymmetric bosonization duality via mass deformations. For $N=1$, there are an infinite number of magnetic-dual theories.
Seiberg-Witten theory can be embedded in F-theory using D3 branes probing an orientifold geometry. The non-perturbative corrections in the orientifold picture map directly to the instanton corrections in the corresponding gauge theory that convert the classical moduli space to the quantum one. In this short review we argue that the recently proposed class of conformal Gaiotto models may also be embedded in F-theory. The F-theory constructions help us not only to understand the Gaiotto dualities but also to extend to the non-conformal cases with and without cascading behaviors. For the conforma…
A generalized twistor transform for spinning particles in 3+1 dimensions is constructed that beautifully unifies many types of spinning systems by mapping them to the same twistor, thus predicting an infinite set of duality relations among spinning systems with different Hamiltonians. Usual 1T-physics is not equipped to explain the duality relationships and unification between these systems. We use 2T-physics in 4+2 dimensions to uncover new properties of twistors, and expect that our approach will prove to be useful for practical applications as well as for a deeper understanding of fundament…
In this paper we study the one- and two-loop corrections to the four-point amplitude of N=6 Chern-Simons matter theory. Using generalized unitarity methods we express the one- and two-loop amplitudes in terms of dual-conformal integrals. Explicit integration by using dimensional reduction gives vanishing one-loop result as expected, while the two-loop result is non-vanishing and matches with the Wilson loop computation. Furthermore, the two-loop correction takes the same form as the one-loop correction to the four-point amplitude of N=4 super Yang-Mills. We discuss possible higher loop extensi…
Recently it has been shown that antibrackets may be expressed in terms of Poisson brackets and vice versa for commuting functions in the original bracket. Here we also introduce generalized brackets involving higher antibrackets or higher Poisson brackets where the latter are of a new type. We give generating functions for these brackets for functions in arbitrary involutions in the original bracket. We also give master equations for generalized Maurer-Cartan equations. The presentation is completely symmetric with respect to Poisson brackets and antibrackets.
We compute and analyse a variety of four-derivative gravitational terms in the effective action of six- and four-dimensional type II string ground states with N=4 supersymmetry. In six dimensions, we compute the relevant perturbative corrections for the type II string compactified on K3. In four dimensions we do analogous computations for several models with (4,0) and (2,2) supersymmetry. Such ground states are related by heterotic-type II duality or type II-type II U-duality. Perturbative computations in one member of a dual pair give a non-perturbative result in the other member. In particul…
We study the generalization of S-duality and Argyres-Seiberg duality for a large class of N=2 superconformal gauge theories. We identify a family of strongly interacting SCFTs and use them as building blocks for generalized superconformal quiver gauge theories. This setup provides a detailed description of the ``very strongly coupled'' regions in the moduli space of more familiar gauge theories. As a byproduct, we provide a purely four dimensional construction of N=2 theories defined by wrapping M5 branes over a Riemann surface.
The first quantum correction to the IIA string effective action arises at the eight-derivative level and takes the schematic form (t_8 t_8 - 1/8 εε)R^4 + B_2 \wedge X_8. This correction, however, cannot be complete by itself, as it is neither supersymmetric nor T-duality covariant. We reexamine these eight-derivative couplings and conjecture that the simple replacement R -> R(Ω_+), where Ω_+ = Ω+ 1/2 H is the connection with torsion, nearly completely captures their dependence on the B-field. The exception is in the odd-odd spin structure sector, where additional terms are needed. We present h…
This thesis deals with the two duality symmetries of N=2 D=10 supergravity theories that are descendant from the full superstring theory: fermionic T-duality and U-duality. The fermionic T-duality transformation is applied to the D-brane and pp-wave solutions of type IIB supergravity. New supersymmetric solutions of complexified supergravity are generated. We show that the pp-wave yields a purely imaginary background after two dualities, undergoes a geometric transformation after four dualities, and is self-dual after eight dualities. Next we apply six bosonic and six fermionic T-dualities to …
In the conventional formalism of physics, with 1-time, systems with different Hamiltonians or Lagrangians have different physical interpretations and are considered to be independent systems unrelated to each other. However, in this paper we construct explicitly canonical maps in 1T phase space (including timelike components, specifically the Hamiltonian) to show that it is appropriate to regard various 1T-physics systems, with different Lagrangians or Hamiltonians, as being duals of each other. This concept is similar in spirit to dualities discovered in more complicated examples in field the…
We derive the fivebrane instanton corrections to the hypermultiplet moduli space $M_H$ of Calabi-Yau string vacua using S-duality symmetry of the type IIB formulation. The result is given in terms of a set of holomorphic functions on the twistor space of $M_H$. It contains not only all orders of the instanton expansion, but also takes into account the presence of D1-D(-1)-brane instantons. Furthermore, we provide a thorough study of the group of discrete isometries of $M_H$ and show that its closure requires a modification of certain symmetry transformations. After this modification, the fiveb…
Gauge/gravity dualities are investigated from the worldsheet point of view. In [arXiv:0706.1163] and [arXiv:0708.2463], a duality between 4d SYM and supergravity on AdS_5xS^5 has been partly explained by using an anisotropic scale invariance of worldsheet theory. In this paper, we refine the argument and generalize it to lower dimensional cases. We show the correspondence between the Wilson loops in (p+1)-d SYM and the minimal surface in the black p-brane background. Although the scale invariance does not exist in these cases, the generalized scale transformation can be utilized. We also find …
We investigate and clarify the mutual compatibility of the higher order corrections arising in supergravity and string theory effective actions and the non-linear duality symmetries of these theories. Starting from a conventional tree level action leading to duality invariant equations of motion, we show how to accommodate duality invariant counterterms given as functionals of both electric and magnetic fields in a perturbative expansion, and to deduce from them a non-polynomial bona fide action satisfying the Gaillard-Zumino constraint. There exists a corresponding consistency constraint in t…
The construction of a $covariant$ Loop Wave functional equation in a 4D spacetime is attained by introducing a generalized $eleven$ dimensional categorical {\bf C}-space comprised of $8\times 8$ antisymmetric matrices. The latter matrices encode the generalized coordinates of the histories of points, loops and surfaces $combined$. Spacetime Topology change and the Holographic principle are natural consequences of imposing the principle of $covariance$ in {\bf C}-space. The Planck length is introduced as a necessary rescaling parameter to establish the correspondence limit with the physics of p…
Superstring theories at low energy limit are described by the corresponding supergravities, and their non-perturbative D-brane/O-plane excitations are described by DBI and WZ actions. Higher derivative corrections to these effective actions are important for understanding the stringy behavior of the fundamental objects. They may be extracted from the contact terms of the corresponding S-matrix elements. On the other hand, the superstring theories enjoy the T- and S-dualities which appear in the S-matrix elements as duality Ward identities. These Ward identities might be used as generating func…
To leading order approximation, the physical content of generalized parton distributions (GPDs) that is accessible in deep virtual electroproduction of photons or mesons is contained in their value on the cross-over trajectory. This trajectory separates the t-channel and s-channel dominated GPD regions. The underlying Lorentz covariance implies correspondence between these two regions through their relation to GPDs on the cross-over trajectory. This point of view leads to a family of GPD sum rules which are a quark analogue of finite energy sum rules and it guides us to a new phenomenological …
We investigate a special class of Poisson--Lie T-plurality transformations of Bianchi cosmologies invariant with respect to non-semisimple Bianchi groups. For six-dimensional semi-Abelian Manin triples $\mathfrak{b}\bowtie \mathfrak{a}$ containing Bianchi algebras $\mathfrak{b}$ we identify general forms of Poisson--Lie identities and dualities. We show that these can be decomposed into simple factors, namely automorphisms of Manin triples, B-shifts, $β$-shifts, and "full" or "factorized" dualities. Further, we study effects of these transformations and utilize the decompositions to obtain new…
We initiate the calculation of loop corrections to correlation functions in 4D defect CFTs. More precisely, we consider N=4 SYM with a codimension-one defect separating two regions of space, x_3>0 and x_3<0, where the gauge group is SU(N) and SU(N-k), respectively. This set-up is made possible by some of the real scalar fields acquiring a non-vanishing and x_3-dependent vacuum expectation value for x_3>0. The holographic dual is the D3-D5 probe brane system where the D5 brane geometry is AdS_4 x S^2 and a background gauge field has k units of flux through the S^2. We diagonalise the mass matri…
We consider geometric engineering of N=1 supersymmetric QFTs with matter in terms of a local model for compactification of F-theory on Calabi-Yau fourfold. By bringing 3-branes near 7-branes we engineer N=1 supersymmetric $SU(N_c)$ gauge theory with $N_f$ flavors in the fundamental. We identify the Higgs branch of this system with the instanton moduli space on the compact four dimensional space of the 7-brane worldvolume. Moreover we show that the Euclidean 3-branes wrapped around the compact part of the 7-brane worldvolume can generate superpotential for $N_f=N_c-1$ as well as lead to quantum…
Superstring theory is one current, promising attempt at unifying gravity with the other three known forces: the electromagnetic force, and the weak and strong nuclear forces. Though this is still a work in progress, much effort has been put toward this goal. A set of specific tools which are used in this effort are gauge/gravity dualities. This thesis consists of a specific implementation of gauge/gravity dualities to describe k-strings of strongly coupled gauge theories as objects dual to Dp-branes embedded in confining supergravity backgrounds from low energy superstring field theory. Along …
We survey physical models which capture the main concepts of double field theory on para-Hermitian manifolds. We show that the geometric theory of Lagrangian and Hamiltonian dynamical systems is an instance of para-Kahler geometry which extends to a natural example of a Born geometry. The corresponding phase space geometry belongs to the family of natural almost para-Kahler structures which we construct explicitly as deformations of the canonical para-Kahler structure by non-linear connections. We extend this framework to a class of non-Lagrangian dynamical systems which naturally encodes the …
We employ the path integral approach developed in [29] to discuss the (generalized) harmonic oscillator in a noncommutative plane. The action for this system is derived in the coherent state basis with additional degrees of freedom. From this the action in the coherent state basis without any additional degrees of freedom is obtained. This gives the ground state spectrum of the system. We then employ the exact renormalization group approach to show that an equivalence can be constructed between this (noncommutative) system and a commutative system.
We use newly discovered N = (2, 2) vector multiplets to clarify T-dualities for generalized Kahler geometries. Following the usual procedure, we gauge isometries of nonlinear sigma-models and introduce Lagrange multipliers that constrain the field-strengths of the gauge fields to vanish. Integrating out the Lagrange multipliers leads to the original action, whereas integrating out the vector multiplets gives the dual action. The description is given both in N = (2, 2) and N = (1, 1) superspace.
We discuss different dualities of QHE in the framework of the noncommutative Chern-Simons theory. First, we consider the Morita or T-duality transformation on the torus which maps the abelian noncommutative CS description of QHE on the torus into the nonabelian commutative description on the dual torus. It is argued that the Ruijsenaars integrable many-body system provides the description of the QHE with finite amount of electrons on the torus. The new IIB brane picture for the QHE is suggested and applied to Jain and generalized hierarchies. This picture naturally links 2d $σ$-model and 3d CS…
In 4-dimensional supergravity theories, covariant under symplectic electric-magnetic duality rotations, a significant role is played by the symplectic matrix M(ϕ), related to the coupling of scalars ϕ to vector field-strengths. In particular, this matrix enters the twisted self-duality condition for 2-form field strengths in the symplectic formulation of generalized Maxwell equations in the presence of scalar fields. In this investigation, we compute several properties of this matrix in relation to the attractor mechanism of extremal (asymptotically flat) black holes. At the attractor points w…
We review our recent work on the low-energy actions and the realizations of strong-weak coupling dualities in non-perturbative phases of compact antisymmetric tensor field theories due to p-brane condensation. As examples we derive and discuss the confining string and confining membrane actions obtained from compact vector and tensor theories in 4D. We also mention the relevance of our results for the description of the Hagedorn phase transition of finite temperature strings.
Freudenthal duality, introduced in L. Borsten, D. Dahanayake, M. J. Duff and W. Rubens, Phys.Rev. D80, 026003 (2009), and defined as an anti-involution on the dyonic charge vector in d = 4 space-time dimensions for those dualities admitting a quartic invariant, is proved to be a symmetry not only of the classical Bekenstein-Hawking entropy but also of the critical points of the black hole potential. Furthermore, Freudenthal duality is extended to any generalized special geometry, thus encompassing all N > 2 supergravities, as well as N = 2 generic special geometry, not necessarily having a cos…
This contribution is based on a talk given by the author at the "Dualities and Generalized Geometries" session of the Corfu Summer Institute 2018 workshops. We overview the results of [1], focusing our attention on integrable $λ$-deformations of WZW models with boundaries.
Higher-derivative interactions and transformation rules of the fields in the effective field theories of the massless string states are strongly constrained by space-time symmetries and dualities. Here we use an exact formulation of ten dimensional ${\cal N}=1$ supergravity coupled to Yang-Mills with manifest T-duality symmetry to construct the first order $α'$-corrections of the heterotic string effective action. The theory contains a supersymmetric and T-duality covariant generalization of the Green-Schwarz mechanism that determines the modifications to the leading order supersymmetry transf…
We develop doubled-coordinate field theory to determine the α' corrections to the massless sector of oriented bosonic closed string theory. Our key tool is a string current algebra of free left-handed bosons that makes O(D,D) T-duality manifest. While T-dualities are unchanged, diffeomorphisms and b-field gauge transformations receive corrections, with a gauge algebra given by an α'-deformation of the duality-covariantized Courant bracket. The action is cubic in a double metric field, an unconstrained extension of the generalized metric that encodes the gravitational fields. Our approach provi…
Duality covariant curvature and torsion tensors in double field theory/generalized geometry are central in analyzing consistent truncations, generalized dualities, and related integrable $σ$-models. They are constructed systematically with the help of a larger, auxiliary space in a procedure inspired by Cartan geometry originally proposed by Poláček and Siegel for bosonic strings. It pivots around a maximally isotropic group that captures the generalized structure group of the physical space. We show how dropping the isotropy condition on this group allows us to describe heterotic/type I strin…
The matrix model formulation of M theory can be generalized to compact transverse backgrounds such as tori. If the number of compact directions is K then the matrix model must be generalized to K+1 dimensional super Yang Mills theory on a compact space. If K is greater than or equal to 3, there are T dualities which which require highly nontrivial identifications between different SYM theories. In the simplest case we will see that the requirement reduces to the well known electric- magnetic duality of N=4 SYM theory in 3+1 dimensions.
In this letter, we compute the corrections to the Cardy-Verlinde formula of $d-$dimensional Schwarzschild black hole. These corrections stem from the generalized uncertainty principle. Then we show, one can taking into account the generalized uncertainty principle corrections of the Cardy-Verlinde entropy formula by just redefining the Virasoro operator $L_0$ and the central charge $c$.
We calculate the corrections to the Fine Structure Constant in the spacetime of a cosmic string. These corrections stem from the generalized uncertainty principle. In the absence of a cosmic string our result here is in agreement with our previous result.
The Principal Chiral Model (PCM) defined on the group manifold of SU(2) is here investigated with the aim of getting a further deepening of its relation with Generalized and Doubled Geometry. A one-parameter family of equivalent Hamiltonian descriptions is introduced, and cast into the form of Born geometries. Then O(3,3) duality transformations of the target phase space are performed and we show that the resulting dual models are defined on the group SB(2,C) which is the Poisson-Lie dual of SU(2) in the Iwasawa decomposition of the Drinfel'd double SL(2, C). Moreover, starting from the Lagran…
We present a method to calculate the One-loop mass correction to Kinks mass in a (1+1)-dimensional field theoretical model in which the fluctuation potential $V^{\prime\prime}(ϕ_c)$ has shape invariance property. We use the generalized zeta function regularization method to implement our setup for describing quantum kink states.
In this Reply, using G.de.A.Marques' comment, we correct calculations and results presented in [Phys.Lett.B 632(2006) 151-154] about corrections to the fine structure constant in the spacetime of a cosmic string from the generalized uncertainty principle.
In this letter, we investigate a possible modification to the temperature and entropy of $5-$dimensional Schwarzschild anti de Sitter black holes due to incorporating stringy corrections to the modified uncertainty principle. Then we subsequently argue for corrections to the Cardy-Verlinde formula in order to account for the corrected entropy. Then we show, one can taking into account the generalized uncertainty principle corrections of the Cardy-Verlinde entropy formula by just redefining the Virasoro operator $L_0$ and the central charge $c$.
We examine the structure of higher-derivative string corrections under a cosmological reduction and make connection to generalized geometry and T-duality. We observe that, while the curvature $R^μ_{νρσ}(Ω_+)$ of the generalized connection with torsion, $Ω_+=Ω+\frac{1}{2}H$, is an important component in forming T-duality invariants, it is necessarily incomplete by itself. We revisit the tree-level $α'R^2$ corrections to the bosonic and heterotic string in the language of generalized geometry and explicitly demonstrate that additional $H$-field couplings are needed to restore T-duality invarianc…
We study cosmological perturbation spectra using the dynamical equations of gauge invariant perturbations with a generalized blue/red-shift term. Combined with the power-law index of cosmological background, ν, we construct a parameter space, (ν, m), to classify all possible perturbation spectra. The magnitude-invariant power spectra occupy a two dimensional region in the (ν, m) space. We find two groups of scale-invariant solutions, one of which are also magnitude invariant while the other not, in the expanding and contracting phases of cosmological evolution. We explore the implications of m…
Starting with the generalized potentials, currents, field tensors and electromagnetic vector fields of dyons as the complex complex quantities with real and imaginary counter parts as electric and magnetic constituents, we have established the electromagnetic duality for various fields and equations of motion associated with dyons in consistent way. It has been shown that the manifestly covariant forms of generalized field equations and equation of motion of dyons are invariant under duality transformations. Quaternionic formulation for generalized fields of dyons are developed and correspondi…
We discuss the calculation of threshold corrections to gauge coupling constants for the, only, non-decomposable class of abelian (2, 2) symmetric N=1 four dimensional heterotic orbifold models, where the internal twist is realized as a generalized Coxeter automorphism. The latter orbifold was singled out in earlier work as the only N=1 heterotic $Z_N$ orbifold that satisfy the phenomenological criteria of correct minimal gauge coupling unification and cancellation of target space modular anomalies.
We study a standard-embedding $N=2$ heterotic string compactification on $K3\times T^2$ with a Wilson line turned on and perform a world-sheet calculation of string threshold correction. The result can be expressed in terms of the quantities appearing in the two-loop calculation of bosonic string. We also comment and speculate on the relevance of our result to generalized Kac-Moody superalgebra and $N=2$ heterotic-type IIA duality.
