We construct several solutions of effective actions for string theories beyond the supergravity approximation utilizing the framework of the Double Field Theory (DFT). The DFT effective actions, which are well suited for accommodating abelian and non-abelian T dualities, are naturally written in terms of modified connections and curvatures with torsion. We construct the most general solutions with vanishing modified torsion, and such geometries don't receive quantum corrections. We also compute the leading $α'$ corrections to several supergravity solutions, including a pair of geometries related by a non-abelian T duality.
It is believed that the invariance of the generalised diffeomorphisms prevents any non-trivial dilaton potential from double field theory. It is therefore difficult to include loop corrections in the formalism. We show that by redefining a non-local dilaton field, under strong constraint which is necessary to preserve the gauge invariance of double field theory, the theory does permit non-constant dilaton potentials and loop corrections. If the fields have dependence on only one single coordinate, the non-local dilaton is identical to the ordinary one with an additive constant.
The present notes are based on three lectures, each ninety minutes long, prepared for the school 'Integrability, Dualities and Deformations', that ran from 23 to 27 August 2021 in Santiago de Compostela and virtually. These lectures, aimed at graduate students, require only a basic knowledge of string theory. The main goal is to introduce $α'$-corrections to the gravitational sector of different formulations of closed string theory and to reformulate them using novel techniques based on double field theory.

We investigate $α'$-corrections of heterotic double field theory up to quadratic order in the language of supersymmetric O(D,D+dim G) gauged double field theory. After introducing double-vielbein formalism with a parametrization which reproduces heterotic supergravity, we show that supersymmetry for heterotic double field theory up to leading order $α'$-correction is obtained from supersymmetric gauged double field theory. We discuss the necessary modifications of the symmetries defined in supersymmetric gauged double field theory. Further, we construct supersymmetric completion at quadratic o…
It is known that the order $α'$ correction to the tree-level effective action for the bosonic and heterotic string can be described in the framework of Double Field Theory (DFT). Here we determine the DFT action and transformations at order $α'^2$ by a direct calculation. The result is vastly simpler than previous proposals. We show that this correction reproduces the known $α'^2$ correction to the heterotic string effective action. The relation of our action to an (implicit) all order proposal coming from the so-called generalized Bergshoeff-de Roo identification is also discussed.
HSZ Double Field Theory is a higher-derivative theory of gravity with exact and manifest T-duality symmetry. The first order corrections in the massless sector were shown to be governed solely by Chern-Simons deformations of the three-form field strength. We compute the full action with up to six derivatives ${\cal O} (α'{}^2)$ for the universal sector containing the metric, two-form and dilaton fields. The Green-Schwarz transformation of the two-form field remains uncorrected to second order. In addition to the expected Chern-Simons-squared and Riemann-cubed terms the theory contains a cubic …
We consider $α'$ corrections to four-point correlators of half-BPS operators in $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills theory in the supergravity limit. By demanding the correct behaviour in the flat space limit, we find that the leading $(α')^3$ correction to the Mellin amplitude is fixed for arbitrary charges of the external operators. By considering the mixing of double-trace operators we can find the $(α')^3$ corrections to the double-trace spectrum which we give explicitly for $su(4)$-singlet operators. We observe striking patterns in the corrections to the spectra which hint at their common te…
We extend the generalized flux formulation of Double Field Theory to include all the first order bosonic contributions to the $α'$ expansion of the heterotic string low energy effective theory. The generalized tangent space and duality group are enhanced by $α'$ corrections, and the gauge symmetries are generated by the usual (gauged) generalized Lie derivative in the extended space. The generalized frame receives derivative corrections through the spin connection with torsion, which is incorporated as a new degree of freedom in the extended bein. We compute the generalized fluxes and find the…
We investigate $α'$ corrections of bosonic strings in the framework of double field theory. The previously introduced "doubled $α'$-geometry" gives $α'$-deformed gauge transformations arising in the Green-Schwarz anomaly cancellation mechanism but does not apply to bosonic strings. These require a different deformation of the duality-covariantized Courant bracket which governs the gauge structure. This is revealed by examining the $α'$ corrections in the gauge algebra of closed string field theory. We construct a four-derivative cubic double field theory action invariant under the deformed gau…
Originally proposed as an $O(d,d)$-invariant formulation of classical closed string theory, double field theory (DFT) offers a rich source of mathematical structures. Most prominently, its gauge algebra is determined by the so-called C-bracket, a generalization of the Courant bracket of generalized geometry, in the sense that it reduces to the latter by restricting the theory to solutions of a "strong constraint". Recently, infinitesimal deformations of these structures in the string sigma model coupling $α'$ were found. In this short contribution, we review constructing the Drinfel'd double o…

The subleading corrections to factorization theorems for soft bremsstrahlung in nonabelian gauge theories and gravity are investigated in the case of a five point amplitude with four scalars. Building on recent results, we write the action of the angular momentum operators on scattering amplitudes as derivatives with respect to the Mandelstam invariants to uncover a double copy structure in the contribution of the soft graviton to the amplitude, both in the leading term and the first correction. Using our approach, we study Gribov's theorem as extended to nonabelian gauge theories and gravity …
We use the $O(d,d)$-covariant formulation of supergravity familiar from Double Field Theory to find the first $α'$-correction to (unimodular) homogeneous Yang-Baxter (YB) deformations of the bosonic string. A special case of this result gives the $α'$-correction to TsT transformations. In a suitable scheme the correction comes entirely from an induced anomalous double Lorentz transformation, which is needed to make the two vielbeins obtained upon the YB deformation equal. This should hold more generally, in particular for abelian and non-abelian T-duality, as we discuss.
Bethe/Gauge correspondence as it is usually stated is ill-defined in five dimensions and needs a "non-perturbative" completion; a related problem also appears in three dimensions. It has been suggested that this problem, probably due to incompleteness of Omega background regularization in odd dimension, may be solved if we consider gauge theory on compact $S^5$ and $S^3$ geometries. We will develop this idea further by giving a full Bethe/Gauge correspondence dictionary on $S^5$ and $S^3$ focussing mainly on the eigenfunctions of (open and closed) relativistic 2-particle Toda chain and its qua…
This paper deals with quantum fluctuations near the classical instanton configuration. Feynman diagrams in the instanton background are used for the calculation of the tunneling amplitude (the instanton density) in the three-loop order for quartic double-well potential. The result for the three-loop contribution coincides in six significant figures with one given long ago by J.~Zinn-Justin. Unlike the two-loop contribution where all involved Feynman integrals are rational numbers, in the three-loop case Feynman diagrams can contain irrational contributions.
In this note we consider Coulomb-branch chiral primary correlation functions in ${\cal N} = 2$ superconformal QCD with gauge group $SU(2)$, in the limit of large R-charge ${\cal J} = 2n$ for the chiral primary operators $[{\cal O}(x)]^ n$ with the inverse gauge coupling $τ$ held fixed. In previous work, these correlation functions were determined to all orders in $n$, up to unknown exponentially small corrections. In this paper we determine the first several orders of the asymptotic expansion of the exponentially small correction itself. To do this we use: the physical interpretation of the ex…
The cancellation of infrared (IR) divergences is an old topic in quantum field theory whose main results are condensed into the celebrated Kinoshita-Lee-Nauenberg (KLN) theorem. In this paper, we consider mass-suppressed corrections to the leading (i.e. double-logarithmic) IR divergences in the context of spontaneously broken gauge theories. We work in a simplified theoretical set-up based on the spontaneously broken $U'(1)\otimes U(1)$ gauge group. We analyze, at the one-loop level and including mass-suppressed terms, the double-logarithmic corrections to the decay channels of a hypothetical …
We study entanglement in states of holographic CFTs defined by Euclidean path integrals over geometries with slowly varying metrics. In particular, our CFT spacetimes have $S^1$ fibers whose size $b$ varies along one direction ($x$) of an ${\mathbb R}^{d-1}$ base. Such examples respect an ${\mathbb R}^{d-2}$ Euclidean symmetry. Treating the $S^1$ direction as time leads to a thermofield double state on a spacetime with adiabatically varying redshift, while treating another direction as time leads to a confining ground state with slowly varying confinement scale. In both contexts the entropy of…
