Let $G$ be a compact connected Lie group and let $K$ be a closed subgroup of $G$. In this paper we study whether the functional $g\mapsto λ_1(G/K,g)\operatorname{diam}(G/K,g)^2$ is bounded among $G$-invariant metrics $g$ on $G/K$. Eldredge, Gordina, and Saloff-Coste conjectured in 2018 that this assertion holds when $K$ is trivial; the only particular cases known so far are when $G$ is abelian, $\operatorname{SU}(2)$, and $\operatorname{SO}(3)$. In this article we prove the existence of the mentioned upper bound for every compact homogeneous space $G/K$ having multiplicity-free isotropy representation.

The subject of this paper is the relationship among the marked length spectrum, the length spectrum, the Laplace spectrum on functions, and the Laplace spectrum on forms on Riemannian nilmanifolds. In particular, we show that for a large class of three-step nilmanifolds, if a pair of nilmanifolds in this class has the same marked length spectrum, they necessarily share the same Laplace spectrum on functions. In contrast, we present the first example of a pair of isospectral Riemannian manifolds with the same marked length spectrum but not the same spectrum on one-forms. Outside of the standard…
In this paper we present a proof of a Neumann type maximum principle for the Laplace operator on compact Riemannian manifolds. A key p oint is the simple geometric nature of the constant in the a priori estimate of this maximum principle. In particular, this maximum principle can be applied to manifolds with Ricci curvature bounded from below and diameter bounded from above to yield a maximum estimate without dependence on a positive lower bound for the volume.
Given an $m$-dimensional closed connected Riemannian manifold $M$ smoothly isometrically immersed in an $n$-dimensional Riemannian manifold $N$, we estimate the diameter of $M$ in terms of its mean curvature field integral under some geometric restrictions, and therefore generalize a recent work of Topping in the Euclidean case (Comment. Math. Helv., 83 (2008), 539--546).
We determine the space of commuting symmetries of the Laplace operator on pseudo-Riemannian manifolds of constant curvature, and derive its algebra structure. Our construction is based on the Riemannian tractor calculus, allowing to construct a prolongation of the differential system for symmetric Killing tensors. We also discuss some aspects of its relation to projective differential geometry.
For free boundary problems on Euclidean spaces, the monotonicity formulas of Alt-Caffarelli-Friedman and Caffarelli-Jerison-Kenig are cornerstones for the regularity theory as well as the existence theory. In this article we establish the analogs of these results for the Laplace-Beltrami operator on Riemannian manifolds. As an application we show that our monotonicity theorems can be employed to prove the Lipschitz continuity for the solutions of a general class of two-phase free boundary problems on Riemannian manifolds.
We build new examples of extremal domains with small prescribed volume for the first eigenvalue of the Laplace-Beltrami operator in some Riemannian manifold with boundary. These domains are close to half balls of small radius centered at a nondegenerate critical point of the mean curvature function of the boundary of the manifold, and their boundary intersects the boundary of the manifold orthogonally.

In this paper, we construct Laplace-Beltrami operators associated with arbitrary Riemannian metrics on noncommutative tori of any dimension. These operators enjoy the main properties of the Laplace-Beltrami operators on ordinary Riemannian manifolds. The construction takes into account the non-triviality of the group of modular automorphisms. On the way we introduce notions of Riemannian density and Riemannian volumes for noncommutative tori.

We study the existence and properties of metrics maximising the first Laplace eigenvalue among conformal metrics of unit volume on Riemannian surfaces. We describe a general approach to this problem and its higher eigenvalue versions via the direct method of calculus of variations. The principal results include the general regularity properties of $λ_k$-extremal metrics and the existence of a partially regular $λ_1$-maximiser.
In the celebrated book entitled Metric Structures for Riemannian and Non-Riemannian Spaces, so-called Green Book, Gromov presented a problem regarding a metric measure space. Gromov posed the question Bound the expansion coefficient from below in terms of the observable diameter. The overall aim of the current study is to demonstrate the answer to this problem. To begin solving this problem, the concentration of measure phenomenon on the metric measure space must be considered. The concentration function to evaluate the measure phenomenon is connected by the observable diameter and the expansi…
The problem of determining the domain of the closure of the Laplace-Beltrami operator on a 2D almost-Riemannian manifold is considered. Using tools from theory of Lie groupoids natural domains of perturbations of the Laplace-Beltrami operator are found. The main novelty is that the presented method allows us to treat geometries with tangency points. This kind of singularity is difficult to treat since those points do not have a tubular neighbourhood compatible with the almost-Riemannian metric.
We establish the existence of analytic curves of eigenvalues for the Laplace-Neumann operator through an analytic variation of the metric of a compact Riemannian manifold $M$ with boundary by means of a new approach rather than Kato's method for unbounded operators. We obtain an expression for the derivative of the curve of eigenvalues, which is used as a device to prove that the eigenvalues of the Laplace-Neumann operator are generically simple in the space $\mathcal{M}^k$ of all $C^k$ Riemannian metrics on $M$. This implies the existence of a residual set of metrics in $\mathcal{M}^k$, which…
For a singular Riemannian foliation $\mathcal{F}$ on a Riemannian manifold, a curve is called horizontal if it meets the leaves of $\mathcal{F}$ perpendicularly. For a singular Riemannian foliation $\mathcal{F}$ on a unit sphere $\mathbb{S}^{n}$, we show that if $\mathcal{F}$ is a polar foliation or if $\mathcal{F}$ is given by the orbits of an infinitesimally polar action, then the horizontal diameter of $\mathbb{S}^{n}$ is $π$, i.e., any two points in $\mathbb{S}^{n}$ can be connected by a horizontal curve of length $\leqπ$.
We consider the Lie group $SU_2$ endowed with a left-invariant axisymmetric Riemannian metric. This means that a metric has eigenvalues $I_1 = I_2, I_3 > 0$. We give an explicit formula for the diameter of such metric. Other words, we compute the diameter of Berger's sphere.
A Riemannian orbifold is a mildly singular generalization of a Riemannian manifold which is locally modeled on the quotient of a connected, open manifold under a finite group of isometries. If all of the isometries used to define the local structures of an entire orbifold are orientation preserving, we call the orbifold locally orientable. We use heat invariants to show that a Riemannian orbifold which is locally orientable cannot be Laplace isospectral to a Riemannian orbifold which is not locally orientable. As a corollary we observe that a Riemannian orbifold that is not locally orientable …
We obtain inequalities for all Laplace eigenvalues of Riemannian manifolds with an upper sectional curvature bound, whose rudiment version for the first Laplace eigenvalue was discovered by Berger in 1979. We show that our inequalities continue to hold for conformal metrics, and moreover, extend naturally to minimal submanifolds. In addition, we obtain explicit estimates for Laplace eigenvalues of minimal submanifolds in terms of geometric quantities of the ambient space.
Two-dimensional almost-Riemannian structures are generalized Riemannian structures on surfaces for which a local orthonormal frame is given by a Lie bracket generating pair of vector fields that can become collinear. Generically, the singular set is an embedded one dimensional manifold and there are three type of points: Riemannian points where the two vector fields are linearly independent, Grushin points where the two vector fields are collinear but their Lie bracket is not and tangency points where the two vector fields and their Lie bracket are collinear and the missing direction is obtain…
We consider a contact manifold with a pseudo-Riemannian metric and define a contact vector field intrinsically associated to this pair of structures. We call this new differential invariant the contact Riemannian curl. On a Riemannian manifold, Killing vector fields are those that annihilate the metric; a Killing $1$-form is obtained from a Killing vector field by lowering indices. We show that the contact Riemannian curl vanishes if the metric is of constant curvature and the contact structure is defined by a Killing $1$-form. We also show that the contact Riemannian curl has a strong similar…
In this paper are given explicit calculations of Laplace operator spectrum for smooth real/complex-valued functions on all connected compact simple rank three Lie groups with biinvariant Riemannian metric and established a connection of obtained formulas with the number theory and integer ternary and binary quadratic forms.
The diameter of a disc filling a loop in the universal covering of a Riemannian manifold may be measured extrinsically using the distance function on the ambient space or intrinsically using the induced length metric on the disc. Correspondingly, the diameter of a van Kampen diagram filling a word that represents the identity in a finitely presented group can either be measured intrinsically its 1-skeleton or extrinsically in the Cayley graph of the group. We construct the first examples of closed manifolds and finitely presented groups for which this choice -- intrinsic versus extrinsic -- gi…
In this paper, we get estimates on the higher eigenvalues of the Dirac operator on locally reducible Riemannian manifolds, in terms of the eigenvalues of the Laplace-Beltrami operator and the scalar curvature. These estimates are sharp, in the sense that, for the first eigenvalue, they reduce to the result of Alexandrov.
We prove the existence of extremal domains with small prescribed volume for the first eigenvalue of the Laplace-Beltrami operator in any compact Riemannian manifold. This result generalizes a results of F. Pacard and the second author where the existence of a nondegenerate critical point of the scalar curvature of the Riemannian manifold was required.
We prove an Hersch's type isoperimetric inequality for the third positive eigenvalue on $\mathbb S^2$. Our method builds on the theory we developped to construct extremal metrics on Riemannian surfaces in conformal classes for any eigenvalue.
We indicate a geometric relation between Laplace-Beltrami spectra and eigenfunctions on compact Riemannian symmetric spaces and the Borel-Weil theory using ideas from symplectic geometry and geometric quantization. This is done by associating to each compact Riemannian symmetric space, via Marsden-Weinstein reduction, a generalized flag manifold which covers the space parametrizing all of its maximal totally geodesic tori. In the process we notice a direct relation between the Satake diagram of the symmetric space and the painted Dynkin diagram of its associated flag manifold. We consider in d…
Using Rauch's comparison theorem, we prove several monotonicity inequalities for Riemannian submanifolds. Our main result is a general Li-Yau inequality which is applicable in any Riemannian manifold whose sectional curvature is bounded above (possibly positive). We show that the monotonicity inequalities can also be used to obtain Simon type diameter bounds, Sobolev inequalities and corresponding isoperimetric inequalities for Riemannian submanifolds with small volume. Moreover, we infer lower diameter bounds for closed minimal submanifolds as corollaries. All the statements are intrinsic in …
We study the Riemannian geometry of 3D axisymmetric ideal fluids. We prove that the $L^2$ exponential map on the group of volume-preserving diffeomorphisms of a $3$-manifold is Fredholm along axisymmetric flows with sufficiently small swirl. Along the way, we define the notions of axisymmetric and swirl-free diffeomorphisms of any manifold with suitable symmetries and show that such diffeomorphisms form a totally geodesic submanifold of infinite $L^2$ diameter inside the space of volume-preserving diffeomorphisms whose diameter is known to be finite. As examples we derive the axisymmetric Eule…
Let $x : M \to E^m$ be an isometric immersion of a Riemannian manifold $M$ into a Euclidean $m$-space. Denote by $Δ$ the Laplace operator of $M$. Then $Δ$ gives rise to a differentiable map $L :M \to E^m$, called the Laplace map, defined by $L(p)=(Δx)(p)$, $p\in M$. We call $L(M)$ the Laplace image, and the transformation $L :M \to L(M)$ from $M$ onto its Laplace image $L(M)$ the {\it Laplace transformation}. In this monograph, we provide a fundamental study of the Laplace transformations of Euclidean submanifolds.
In this paper are given explicit calculations of Laplace operator spectrum for smooth real/complex-valued functions on all connected compact simple rank four Lie groups with biinvariant Riemannian metric, corresponding to root systems $B_4$, $C_4$, $D_4$ and established a connection of obtained formulas with the number theory and integer quadratic forms from two, three and four variables.
In this paper we show that, under some curvature assumptions the integral of distance function on a compact Riemannian manifold is bounded below by the product of diameter, volume and a constant only depending on the dimension.
In this paper, we firstly consider Dirichlet eigenvalue problem which is related to Xin-Laplacian on the bounded domain of complete Riemannian manifolds. By establishing the general formulas, combining with some results of Chen and Cheng type, we prove some eigenvalue inequalities. As some applications, we consider the eigenvalues on some Riemannian manifolds admitting with special functions, the translating solitons, minimal submanifolds on the Euclidean spaces, submanifolds on the unit spheres, projective spaces and so on. In particular, for the case of translating solitons, some eigenvalue …
For Riemannian manifolds with a smooth measure $(M, g, e^{-f}dv_{g})$, we prove a generalized Myers compactness theorem when Bakry--Emery Ricci tensor is bounded from below and $f$ is bounded.
In this paper we provide an integral representation of the fractional Laplace-Beltrami operator for general riemannian manifolds which has several interesting applications. We give two different proofs, in two different scenarios, of essentially the same result. One of them deals with compact manifolds with or without boundary, while the other approach treats the case of riemannian manifolds without boundary whose Ricci curvature is uniformly bounded below.
This paper aims to study the $(m,ρ)$-quasi Einstein manifold. This article shows that a complete and connected Riemannian manifold under certain conditions becomes compact. Also, we have determined an upper bound of the diameter for such a manifold. It is also exhibited that the potential function acquiesces to the Hodge-de Rham potential up to a real constant in an $(m,ρ)$-quasi Einstein manifold. Later, some triviality and integral conditions are established for a non-compact complete $(m,ρ)$-quasi Einstein manifold having finite volume. Finally, it is proved that with some certain constrain…
We show that any generalised smooth distribution on a smooth manifold, possibly of non-constant rank, admits a Riemannian metric. Using such a metric, we attach a Laplace operator to any smooth distribution as such. When the underlying manifold is compact, we show that it is essentially self-adjoint. Viewing this Laplacian in the longitudinal pseudodifferential calculus of the smallest singular foliation which includes the distribution, we prove hypoellipticity.
We consider the eigenfunctions of the Laplace operator $Δ$ on a compact Riemannian manifold of dimension $n$. For $M$ homogeneous with irreducible isotropy representation and for a fixed eigenvalue of $Δ$ we find the average number of common zeros of $n$ eigenfunctions. For this we compute the volume of the image of $M$ under an equivariant immersion into a sphere.
In this paper we consider a family of Riemannian manifolds, not necessarily complete, with curvature conditions in a neighborhood of a ray. Under these conditions we obtain that the essential spectrum of the Laplacian contains an interval. The results presented in this paper allow to determine the spectrum of the Laplace operator on unlimited regions of space forms, such as horoball in hyperbolic space and cones in Euclidean space.
For a fat sub-Riemannian structure, we introduce three canonical Ricci curvatures in the sense of Agrachev-Zelenko-Li. Under appropriate bounds we prove comparison theorems for conjugate lengths, Bonnet-Myers type results and Laplacian comparison theorems for the intrinsic sub-Laplacian. As an application, we consider the sub-Riemannian structure of $3$-Sasakian manifolds, for which we provide explicit curvature formulas. We prove that any complete $3$-Sasakian structure of dimension $4d+3$, with $d>1$, has sub-Riemannian diameter bounded by $π$. When $d=1$, a similar statement holds under add…
The authors find geodesics, shortest arcs, diameter, cut locus, and conjugate sets for left-invariant sub-Riemannian metric on the Lie group SO(3), under condition that the metric is right-invariant relative to the Lie subgroup $SO(2)\subset SO(3)$.
What is the suitable Laplace operator on vector fields for the Navier-Stokes equation on a Riemannian manifold? In this note, by considering Nash embedding, we will try to elucidate different aspects of different Laplace operators such as de Rham-Hodge Laplacian as well as Ebin-Marsden's Laplacian. A probabilistic representation formula for Navier-Stokes equations on a general compact Riemannian manifold is obtained when de Rham-Hodge Laplacian is involved. MSC 2010: 35Q30, 58J65
In this paper we give bounds for the first eigenvalue of the conformal Laplacian and the Yamabe invariant of a compact Riemannian manifold, by using conditions on the Ricci curvature and the diameter and deduce certain conditions on the manifold to be conformal to a sphere.
It is shown that the diameter of a compact shrinking Ricci soliton has a universal lower bound. This is proved by extending universal estimates for the first non-zero eigenvalue of Laplacian on compact Riemannian manifolds with lower Ricci curvature bound to a twisted Laplacian on compact shrinking Ricci solitons.
In this note we consider versions of both Ricci and sectional curvature pinching for Riemannian manifold with density. In the Ricci curvature case the main result implies a diameter estimate that is new even for compact shrinking Ricci solitons. In the case of sectional curvature we prove a new sphere theorem.
Using the definition of a Finsler--Laplacian given by the first author, we show that two bi-Lipschitz Finsler metrics have a controlled spectrum. We deduce from that several generalizations of Riemannian results. In particular, we show that the spectrum on Finsler surfaces is controlled above by a constant depending on the topology of the surface and on the quasireversibility constant of the metric. In contrast to Riemannian geometry, we then give examples of highly non-reversible metrics on surfaces with arbitrarily large first eigenvalue.
It is known (E.L. Green (1997), O. Post (2003)) that for an arbitrary $m\in\mathbb{N}$ one can construct a periodic non-compact Riemannian manifold $M$ with at least $m$ gaps in the spectrum of the corresponding Laplace-Beltrami operator $-Δ_M$. In this work we want not only to produce a new type of periodic manifolds with spectral gaps but also to control the edges of these gaps. The main result of the paper is as follows: for arbitrary pairwise disjoint intervals $(\a_j,\b_j)\subset[0,\infty)$, $j=1,...,m$ ($m\in\mathbb{N}$), for an arbitrarily small $δ>0$ and for an arbitrarily large $L>0$ …
For any closed smooth Riemannian manifold H. Weyl has defined a sequence of numbers called today intrinsic volumes. They include volume, Euler characteristic, and integral of the scalar curvature. We conjecture that absolute values of all intrinsic volumes are bounded by a constant depending only on the dimension of the manifold, upper bound on its diameter, and lower bound on the sectional curvature. Furthermore we conjecture that intrinsic volumes can be defined for some (so called smoothable) Alexandrov spaces with curvature bounded below and state few of the expected properties of them, pa…
Let $D$ be a Riemannian 2-disc of area $A$, diameter $d$ and length of the boundary $L$. We prove that it is possible to contract the boundary of $D$ through curves of length $\leq L + 200d\max\{1,\ln {\sqrt{A}\over d} \}$. This answers a twenty-year old question of S. Frankel and M. Katz, a version of which was asked earlier by M.Gromov. We also prove that a Riemannian $2$-sphere $M$ of diameter $d$ and area $A$ can be swept out by loops based at any prescribed point $p\in M$ of length $\leq 200 d\max\{1,\ln{\sqrt{A}\over d} \}$. This estimate is optimal up to a constant factor. In addition, …
