For free boundary problems on Euclidean spaces, the monotonicity formulas of Alt-Caffarelli-Friedman and Caffarelli-Jerison-Kenig are cornerstones for the regularity theory as well as the existence theory. In this article we establish the analogs of these results for the Laplace-Beltrami operator on Riemannian manifolds. As an application we show that our monotonicity theorems can be employed to prove the Lipschitz continuity for the solutions of a general class of two-phase free boundary problems on Riemannian manifolds.
We show that eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the Laplace-Beltrami operator on a Riemannian manifold are approximated by eigenvalues and eigenvectors of a (suitably weighted) graph Laplace operator of a proximity graph on an epsilon-net.
The problem of determining the domain of the closure of the Laplace-Beltrami operator on a 2D almost-Riemannian manifold is considered. Using tools from theory of Lie groupoids natural domains of perturbations of the Laplace-Beltrami operator are found. The main novelty is that the presented method allows us to treat geometries with tangency points. This kind of singularity is difficult to treat since those points do not have a tubular neighbourhood compatible with the almost-Riemannian metric.
In this paper we provide an integral representation of the fractional Laplace-Beltrami operator for general riemannian manifolds which has several interesting applications. We give two different proofs, in two different scenarios, of essentially the same result. One of them deals with compact manifolds with or without boundary, while the other approach treats the case of riemannian manifolds without boundary whose Ricci curvature is uniformly bounded below.
Here we prove an isoperimetric inequality for the harmonic mean of the first $N-1$ non-trivial Neumann eigenvalues of the Laplace-Beltrami operator for domains contained in a hemisphere of $\mathbb{S}^N$.
We adapt in the present note the perturbation method introduced in [3] to get a Gaussian lower bound for the Neumann heat kernel of the Laplace-Beltrami operator on an open subset of a compact Riemannian manifold.
In this paper we prove a concentration result and an error estimate for a model of heat conduction in composite materials having a microscopic structure arranged in a perodic array and thermally active membranes separating the heat conductive phases.
We study a concentration and homogenization problem modelling electrical conduction in a composite material. The novelty of the problem is due to the specific scaling of the physical quantities characterizing the dielectric component of the composite. This leads to the appearance of a peculiar displacement current governed by a Laplace-Beltrami pseudo-parabolic equation. This pseudo-parabolic character is present also in the homogenized equation, which is obtained by the unfolding technique.
In this paper we deal with the problems of the weak localization of the eigenfunction expansions related to Laplace-Beltrami operator on unit sphere. The conditions for weak localization of Fourier-Laplace series are investigated by comparing the Riesz and Cesaro methods of summation for eigenfunction expansions of the Laplace-Beltrami operator. It is shown that the weak localization principle for the integrable functions f(x) at the point x depends not only on behavior of the function around x but on the behavior of the function around diametrically opposite point \overline{x}.
We investigate the mixed Dirichlet-Neumann boundary value problems for the Laplace-Beltrami equation on a smooth hypersurface $\mathcal{C}$ with the smooth boundary in non-classical setting in the Bessel potential spaces $\mathbb{H}^1_p(\mathcal{C})$ for $1<p<\infty$. To the initial BVP we apply quasilocalization and obtain model BVPs for the Laplacian. The model mixed BVP on the half plane is investigated by potential method and is reduced to an equivalent system of Mellin convolution equations in Bessel potential and Besov spaces. The symbol of the obtained system is written explicitly, whic…
The Dirichlet eigenvalues of the Laplace-Beltrami operator are larger on a flat disc than on any other surface of revoltuion immersed in Euclidean space with the same boundary.
The paper is pertaining to the spectral theory of operators and boundary value problems for differential equations on manifolds. Eigenvalues of such problems are studied as functionals on the space of domains. Resolvent continuity of the corresponding operators is established under domain deformation and estimates of continuity moduli of their eigenvalues $\slash$ eigenfunctions are obtained provided the boundary of nonperturbed domain is locally represented as a graph of some continuous function and domain deformation is measured with respect to the Hausdorff--Pompeiu metric.
We study the convergence of the graph Laplacian of a random geometric graph generated by an i.i.d. sample from a $m$-dimensional submanifold $M$ in $R^d$ as the sample size $n$ increases and the neighborhood size $h$ tends to zero. We show that eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the graph Laplacian converge with a rate of $O\Big(\big(\frac{\log n}{n}\big)^\frac{1}{2m}\Big)$ to the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the weighted Laplace-Beltrami operator of $M$. No information on the submanifold $M$ is needed in the construction of the graph or the "out-of-sample extension" of the eigenvectors. Of …
Given a compact Riemannian manifold $(M, g)$ without boundary, we estimate the Lebesgue norm of Laplace-Beltrami eigenfunctions when restricted to a wide variety of subsets $Γ$ of $M$. The sets $Γ$ that we consider are Borel measurable, Lebesgue-null but otherwise arbitrary with positive Hausdorff dimension. Our estimates are based on Frostman-type ball growth conditions for measures supported on $Γ$. For large Lebesgue exponents $p$, these estimates provide a natural generalization of $L^p$ bounds for eigenfunctions restricted to submanifolds, previously obtained in \cite{Ho68, Ho71, Sog88, B…
We introduce the notion of a family of convolution operators associated with a given elliptic partial differential operator. Such a convolution structure is shown to exist for a general class of Laplace-Beltrami operators on two-dimensional manifolds endowed with cone-like metrics. This structure gives rise to a convolution semigroup representation for the Markovian semigroup generated by the Laplace-Beltrami operator. In the particular case of the operator $\mathcal{L} = \partial_x^2 + {1 \over 2x} \partial_x + {1 \over x} \partial_θ^2$ on $\mathbb{R}^+ \times \mathbb{T}$, we deduce the exist…
The Dirichlet eigenvalues of the Laplace-Beltrami operator are larger on an annulus than on any other surface of revolution in $\mathbb{R}^3$ with the same boundary. This is established by defining a sequence of shrinking cylinders about the axis of symmetry and proving that flattening a surface outside of each cylinder successively increases the eigenvalues. A similar argument shows that the Dirichlet eigenvalues of the Laplace-Beltrami operator are larger on a half-helicoid than on any other screw surface in $\mathbb{R}^2 \times \mathbb{S}^1$ with the same boundary.
In this note, we improved the Liouville type theorem for the Beltrami flows. Two different methods are used to prove it. One is the monotonicity method, and the other is proof by contradiction. The conditions that we proposed on Beltrami flows are significantly weaker than previously known conditions.
Let $(M,g)$ be a connected, closed, orientable Riemannian surface and denote by $λ_k(M,g)$ the $k$-th eigenvalue of the Laplace-Beltrami operator on $(M,g)$. In this paper, we consider the mapping $(M, g)\mapsto λ_k(M,g)$. We propose a computational method for finding the conformal spectrum $Λ^c_k(M,[g_0])$, which is defined by the eigenvalue optimization problem of maximizing $λ_k(M,g)$ for $k$ fixed as $g$ varies within a conformal class $[g_0]$ of fixed volume $textrm{vol}(M,g) = 1$. We also propose a computational method for the problem where $M$ is additionally allowed to vary over surfac…
We study the spectrum of the Laplace-Beltrami operator on ellipsoids. For ellipsoids that are close to the sphere, we use analytic perturbation theory to estimate the eigenvalues up to two orders. We show that for biaxial ellipsoids sufficiently close to the sphere, the first $N$ eigenvalues have multiplicity at most two, and characterize those that are simple. For the triaxial ellipsoids sufficiently close to the sphere that are not biaxial, we show that at least the first sixteen eigenvalues are all simple. We also give the results of various numerical experiments, including comparisons to o…
We consider inverse problems for $p$-Laplace type equations under monotonicity assumptions. In two dimensions, we show that any two conductivities satisfying $σ_1 \geq σ_2$ and having the same nonlinear Dirichlet-to-Neumann map must be identical. The proof is based on a monotonicity inequality and the unique continuation principle for $p$-Laplace type equations. In higher dimensions, where unique continuation is not known, we obtain a similar result for conductivities close to constant.
We show that the convex hull of a monotone perturbation of a homogeneous background conductivity in the $p$-conductivity equation is determined by knowledge of the nonlinear Dirichlet-Neumann operator. We give two independent proofs, one of which is based on the monotonicity method and the other on the enclosure method. Our results are constructive and require no jump or smoothness properties on the conductivity perturbation or its support.
We prove a trace formula for three-dimensional spherically symmetric Riemannian manifolds with boundary which satisfy the Herglotz condition: The wave trace is singular precisely at the length spectrum of periodic broken rays. In particular, the Neumann spectrum of the Laplace--Beltrami operator uniquely determines the length spectrum. The trace formula also applies for the toroidal modes of the free oscillations in the earth. We then prove that the length spectrum is rigid: Deformations preserving the length spectrum and spherical symmetry are necessarily trivial in any dimension, provided th…

We study the evolution of the heat and of a free quantum particle (described by the Schrödinger equation) on two-dimensional manifolds endowed with the degenerate Riemannian metric $ds^2=dx^2+|x|^{-2α}dθ^2$, where $x\in \mathbb R$, $θ\in\mathbb T$ and the parameter $α\in\mathbb R$. For $α\le-1$ this metric describes cone-like manifolds (for $α=-1$ it is a flat cone). For $α=0$ it is a cylinder. For $α\ge 1$ it is a Grushin-like metric. We show that the Laplace-Beltrami operator $Δ$ is essentially self-adjoint if and only if $α\notin(-3,1)$. In this case the only self-adjoint extension is the F…
We investigate the regularity of semi-stable, radially symmetric, and decreasing solutions for a class of quasilinear reaction-diffusion equations in the inhomogeneous context of Riemannian manifolds. We prove uniform boundedness, Lebesgue and Sobolev estimates for this class of solutions for equations involving the p-Laplace Beltrami operator and locally Lipschitz non-linearity. We emphasize that our results do not depend on the boundary conditions and the specific form of the non-linearities and metric. Moreover, as an application, we establish regularity of the extremal solutions for equati…
We consider the inverse boundary value problem for the first order perturbation of the polyharmonic operator $\mathcal L_{g,X,q}$, with $X$ being a $W^{1,\infty}$ vector field and $q$ being an $L^\infty$ function on compact Riemannian manifolds with boundary which are conformally embedded in a product of the Euclidean line and a simple manifold. We show that the knowledge of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann determines $X$ and $q$ uniquely. The method is based on the construction of complex geometrical optics solutions using the Carleman estimate for the Laplace-Beltrami operator due to Dos Santos Ferr…

We consider the conjecture proposed in Matsumoto, Zhang and Schiebinger (2022) suggesting that optimal transport with quadratic regularisation can be used to construct a graph whose discrete Laplace operator converges to the Laplace--Beltrami operator. We derive first order optimal potentials for the problem under consideration and find that the resulting solutions exhibit a surprising resemblance to the well-known Barenblatt--Prattle solution of the porous medium equation. Then, relying on these first order optimal potentials, we derive the pointwise $L^2$-limit of such discrete operators bui…
