We consider inverse problems for $p$-Laplace type equations under monotonicity assumptions. In two dimensions, we show that any two conductivities satisfying $σ_1 \geq σ_2$ and having the same nonlinear Dirichlet-to-Neumann map must be identical. The proof is based on a monotonicity inequality and the unique continuation principle for $p$-Laplace type equations. In higher dimensions, where unique continuation is not known, we obtain a similar result for conductivities close to constant.
We extend to the case of a system involving p-Laplacians, the monotonicity and symmetry results of Damascelli and Pacella obtained in the case of a scalar p-Laplace equation with $1<p<2$. For this purpose, we use the moving hyperplanes method and we suppose that the right hand sides are increasing and locally Lipschitz continuous.
We show that the convex hull of a monotone perturbation of a homogeneous background conductivity in the $p$-conductivity equation is determined by knowledge of the nonlinear Dirichlet-Neumann operator. We give two independent proofs, one of which is based on the monotonicity method and the other on the enclosure method. Our results are constructive and require no jump or smoothness properties on the conductivity perturbation or its support.

For free boundary problems on Euclidean spaces, the monotonicity formulas of Alt-Caffarelli-Friedman and Caffarelli-Jerison-Kenig are cornerstones for the regularity theory as well as the existence theory. In this article we establish the analogs of these results for the Laplace-Beltrami operator on Riemannian manifolds. As an application we show that our monotonicity theorems can be employed to prove the Lipschitz continuity for the solutions of a general class of two-phase free boundary problems on Riemannian manifolds.
We study the factorization and monotonicity method for inverse acoustic scattering problems. Firstly, we give a new general functional analysis theorem for the monotonicity method. Comparing with the factorization method, the general theorem of the monotonicity generates reconstruction schemes under weaker {\it a priori} assumptions for unknown targets, and can directly deal with mixed problems so that the unknown targets have several different boundary conditions. Using the general theorem, we give the reconstruction scheme for the mixed crack that the Dirichlet boundary condition is imposed …

The monotonicity method for the inverse acoustic scattering problem is to understand the inclusion relation between an unknown object and artificial one by comparing the far field operator with artificial operator. This paper introduces the development of this method to the inverse crack scattering problem. Our aim is to give the following two indicators: One (Theorem 1.1) is to determine whether an artificial small arc is contained in the unknown arc. The other one (Theorem 1.2) is whether an artificial large domain contain the unknown one. Finally, numerical examples based on Theorem 1.1 are…
We study the inverse problem for the fractional Laplace equation with multiple nonlinear lower order terms. We show that the direct problem is well-posed and the inverse problem is uniquely solvable. More specifically, the unknown nonlinearities can be uniquely determined from exterior measurements under suitable settings.
In this paper we prove strong unique continuation principle and unique continuation from sets of positive measure for solutions of a higher order fractional Laplace equation in an open domain. Our proofs are based on the Caffarelli-Silvestre extension method combined with an Almgren type monotonicity formula. The corresponding extended problem is formulated as a systems of two second order equations with singular or degenerate weights in a half-space, for which asymptotics estimates are derived by a blow-up analysis.

We generalize the factorization method for inverse medium scattering using a particular factorization of the difference of two far field operators. Whilst the factorization method been used so far mainly to identify the shape of a scatterer's support, we show that factorizations based on Dirichlet-to-Neumann operators can be used to compute bounds for numerical values of the medium on the boundary of its support. To this end, we generalize ideas from inside-outside duality to obtain a monotonicity principle that allows for alternative uniqueness proofs for particular inverse scattering problem…
We study the enclosure method for the p-Calderón problem, which is a nonlinear generalization of the inverse conductivity problem due to Calderón that involves the p-Laplace equation. The method allows one to reconstruct the convex hull of an inclusion in the nonlinear model by using exponentially growing solutions introduced by Wolff. We justify this method for the penetrable obstacle case, where the inclusion is modelled as a jump in the conductivity. The result is based on a monotonicity inequality and the properties of the Wolff solutions.
We consider the problem of finding a function defined on $(0,\infty)$ from a countable set of values of its Laplace transform. The problem is severely ill-posed. We shall use the expansion of the function in a series of Laguerre polynomials to convert the problem in an analytic interpolation problem. Then, using the coefficients of Lagrange polynomials we shall construct a stable approximation solution.
We discuss a time-harmonic inverse scattering problem for the Helmholtz equation with compactly supported penetrable and possibly inhomogeneous scattering objects in an unbounded homogeneous background medium, and we develop a monotonicity relation for the far field operator that maps superpositions of incident plane waves to the far field patterns of the corresponding scattered waves. We utilize this monotonicity relation to establish novel characterizations of the support of the scattering objects in terms of the far field operator. These are related to and extend corresponding results known…
In this paper, we consider the inverse scattering problem to reconstruct the defect in an open periodic waveguide from near field data. Our first aim is to mention that there is a mistake in the factorization method of Lechleiter 2008. By this we can not apply it to solve this inverse problem. Our second aim is to give ways to understand the defect from inside (Theorem 1.1) and outside (Theorem 1.2) based on the monotonicity method.
We investigate the monotonicity method for fractional semilinear elliptic equations with power type nonlinearities. We prove that if-and-only-if monotonicity relations between coefficients and the derivative of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map hold. Based on the strong monotonicity relations, we study a constructive global uniqueness for coefficients and inclusion detection for the fractional Calderón type inverse problem. Meanwhile, we can also derive the Lipschitz stability with finitely many measurements. The results hold for any $n\geq 1$.
We consider the inverse problems of for the fractional Schrödinger equation by using monotonicity formulas. We provide if-and-only-if monotonicity relations between positive bounded potentials and their associated nonlocal Dirichlet-to-Neumann maps. Based on the monotonicity relation, we can prove uniqueness for the nonlocal Calderón problem in a constructive manner. Secondly, we offer a reconstruction method for an unknown obstacles in a given domain. Our method is independent of the dimension $n\geq 2$ and only requires the background solution of the fractional Schrödinger equation.
We establish the $C^{1+γ}$-Hölder regularity of the regular free boundary in the stationary obstacle problem defined by the fractional Laplace operator with drift in the subcritical regime. Our method of the proof consists in proving a new monotonicity formula and an epiperimetric inequality. Both tools generalizes the original ideas of G. Weiss for the classical obstacle problem to the framework of fractional powers of the Laplace operator with drift. Our study continues the earlier research, where two of us established the optimal interior regularity of solutions.
This work extends monotonicity-based methods in inverse problems to the case of the Helmholtz (or stationary Schrödinger) equation $(Δ+ k^2 q) u = 0$ in a bounded domain for fixed non-resonance frequency $k>0$ and real-valued scattering coefficient function $q$. We show a monotonicity relation between the scattering coefficient $q$ and the local Neumann-Dirichlet operator that holds up to finitely many eigenvalues. Combining this with the method of localized potentials, or Runge approximation, adapted to the case where finitely many constraints are present, we derive a constructive monotonicit…
The inverse problem of electrical impedance tomography is severely ill-posed, meaning that, only limited information about the conductivity can in practice be recovered from boundary measurements of electric current and voltage. Recently it was shown that a simple monotonicity property of the related Neumann-to-Dirichlet map can be used to characterize shapes of inhomogeneities in a known background conductivity. In this paper we formulate a monotonicity-based shape reconstruction scheme that applies to approximative measurement models, and regularizes against noise and modelling error. We dem…
We prove the uniqueness property for a class of entire solutions to the equation \begin{equation*} \left\{ \begin{array}{ll} -{\rm div}\, \mathcal{A}(x,\nabla u) = σ, \quad u\geq 0 \quad \text{in } \mathbb{R}^n, \\ \displaystyle{\liminf_{|x|\rightarrow \infty}}\, u = 0, \end{array} \right. \end{equation*} where $σ$ is a nonnegative locally finite measure in $\mathbb{R}^n$, absolutely continuous with respect to the $p$-capacity, and ${\rm div}\, \mathcal{A}(x,\nabla u)$ is the $\mathcal{A}$-Laplace operator, under standard growth and monotonicity assumptions of order $p$ ($1<p<\infty$) on $\mat…
We prove novel (local) square function/Carleson measure estimates for non-negative solutions to the evolutionary $p$-Laplace equation in the complement of parabolic Ahlfors-David regular sets. In the case of the heat equation, the Laplace equation as well as the $p$-Laplace equation, the corresponding square function estimates have proven fundamental in symmetry and inverse/free boundary type problems, and in particular in the study of (parabolic) uniform rectifiability. Though the implications of the square function estimates are less clear for the evolutionary $p$-Laplace equation, mainly du…
Asymptotic behavior of solutions to heat equations with spatially singular inverse-square potentials is studied. By combining a parabolic Almgren type monotonicity formula with blow-up methods, we evaluate the exact behavior near the singularity of solutions to linear and subcritical semilinear parabolic equations with Hardy type potentials. As a remarkable byproduct, a unique continuation property is obtained.
In numerical existence proofs for solutions of the semi-linear elliptic system, evaluating the norm of the inverse of a perturbed Laplace operator plays an important role. We reveal an eigenvalue problem to design a method for verifying the invertibility of the operator and evaluating the norm of its inverse based on Liu's method and the Temple-Lehman-Goerisch method. We apply the inverse-norm's estimation to the Dirichlet boundary value problem of the Lotka-Volterra system with diffusion terms and confirm the efficacy of our method.
We consider an inverse problem of determining the coefficients of a fractional $p\,$-Laplace equation in the exterior domain. Assuming suitable local regularity of the coefficients in the exterior domain, we offer an explicit reconstruction formula in the region where the exterior measurements are performed. This formula is then used to establish a global uniqueness result for real-analytic coefficents. In addition, we also derive a stability estimate for the unique determination of the coefficients in the exterior measurement set.
In this paper we give an unified approach to some questions arising in different fields of nonlinear analysis, namely: (a) the study of the structure of the Fuč\'ık spectrum and (b) possible variants and extensions of the monotonicity formula by Alt--Caffarelli--Friedman \cite{acf}. In the first part of the paper we present a class of optimal partition problems involving the first eigenvalue of the Laplace operator. Beside establishing the existence of the optimal partition, we develop a theory for the extremality conditions and the regularity of minimizers. As a first application of this appr…
This paper presents a novel method that allows to generalise the use of the Adam-Bashforth to Partial Differential Equations with local and non local operator. The Method derives a two step Adam-Bashforth numerical scheme in Laplace space and the solution is taken back into the real space via inverse Laplace transform. The method yields a powerful numerical algorithm for fractional order derivative where the usually very difficult to manage summation in the numerical scheme disappears. Error Analysis of the method is also presented. Applications of the method and numerical simulations are pres…
In this paper we establish the existence and uniqueness of solutions for nonlinear evolution equations on Banach space with locally monotone operators, which is a generalization of the classical result by J.L. Lions for monotone operators. In particular, we show that local monotonicity implies the pseudo-monotonicity. The main result is applied to various types of PDE such as reaction-diffusion equations, generalized Burgers equation, Navier-Stokes equation, 3D Leray-$α$ model and $p$-Laplace equation with non-monotone perturbations.
We provide a general scheme, in the combined frameworks of Mathematical Scattering Theory and Factorization Method, for inverse scattering for the couple of self-adjoint operators $(\widetildeΔ,Δ)$, where $Δ$ is the free Laplacian in $L^{2}({\mathbb R}^{3})$ and $\widetildeΔ$ is one of its singular perturbations, i.e., such that the set $\{u\in H^{2}({\mathbb R}^{3})\cap \text{dom}(\widetildeΔ)\, :\, Δu=\widetildeΔu\}$ is dense. Typically $\widetildeΔ$ corresponds to a self-adjoint realization of the Laplace operator with some kind of boundary conditions imposed on a null subset; in particular…
The article [HPS] established a monotonicity inequality for the Helmholtz equation and presented applications to shape detection and local uniqueness in inverse boundary problems. The monotonicity inequality states that if two scattering coefficients satisfy $q_1 \leq q_2$, then the corresponding Neumann-to-Dirichlet operators satisfy $Λ(q_1) \leq Λ(q_2)$ up to a finite dimensional subspace. Here we improve the bounds for the dimension of this space. In particular, if $q_1$ and $q_2$ have the same number of positive Neumann eigenvalues, then the finite dimensional space is trivial.
In this paper we develop a method to solve evolution equations on Gelfand triples with time-fractional derivative based on monotonicity techniques. Applications include deterministic and stochastic quasi-linear partial differential equations with time-fractional derivatives, including time-fractional (stochastic) porous media equations (including the case where the Laplace operator is also fractional) and $p$-Laplace equations as special cases.
Let $Δ_Λ\le λ_Λ$ be a semi-bounded self-adjoint realization of the Laplace operator with boundary conditions (Dirichlet, Neumann, semi-transparent) assigned on the Lipschitz boundary of a bounded obstacle $Ω$. Let $u^Λ_{f}$ and $u^{0}_{f}$ denote the solutions of the wave equations corresponding to $Δ_Λ$ and to the free Laplacian $Δ$ respectively, with a source term $f$ concentrated at time $t=0$ (a pulse). We show that for any fixed $λ>λ_Λ\ge 0$ and any fixed $B\subset\subset{\mathbb R}^{n}\backslash\barΩ$, the obstacle $Ω$ can be reconstructed by the data $$ F^Λ_λf(x):=\int_{0}^{\infty}e^{-\…
We provide monotonicity formulas for solutions to the p-Laplace equation defined in the exterior of a convex domain. A number of analytic and geometric consequences are derived, including the classical Minkowski inequality as well as new characterizations of rotationally symmetric solutions and domains. The proofs rely on the conformal splitting technique introduced by the second author in collaboration with V. Agostiniani.
