Let $G$ be a compact connected Lie group of dimension $m$. Once a bi-invariant metric on $G$ is fixed, left-invariant metrics on $G$ are in correspondence with $m\times m$ positive definite symmetric matrices. We estimate the diameter and the smallest positive eigenvalue of the Laplace-Beltrami operator associated to a left-invariant metric on $G$ in terms of the eigenvalues of the corresponding positive definite symmetric matrix. As a consequence, we give partial answers to a conjecture by Eldredge, Gordina and Saloff-Coste; namely, we give large subsets $\mathcal S$ of the space of left-invariant metrics $\mathcal M$ on $G$ such that there exists a positive real number $C$ depending on $G$ and $\mathcal S$ such that $λ_1(G,g)\operatorname{diam}(G,g)^2\leq C$ for all $g\in\mathcal S$. The existence of the constant $C$ for $\mathcal S=\mathcal M$ is the original conjecture.
Eldredge, Gordina and Saloff-Coste recently conjectured that, for a given compact connected Lie group $G$, there is a positive real number $C$ such that $λ_1(G,g)\operatorname{diam}(G,g)^2\leq C$ for all left-invariant metrics $g$ on $G$. In this short note, we establish the conjecture for the small subclass of naturally reductive left-invariant metrics on a compact simple Lie group.
If $G$ is a compact Lie group endowed with a left invariant metric $g$, then $G$ acts via pullback by isometries on each eigenspace of the associated Laplace operator $Δ_g$. We establish algebraic criteria for the existence of left invariant metrics $g$ on $G$ such that each eigenspace of $Δ_g$, regarded as the real vector space of the corresponding real eigenfunctions, is irreducible under the action of $G$. We prove that generic left invariant metrics on the Lie groups $G=\operatorname{SU}(2)\times\ldots\times\operatorname{SU}(2)\times T$, where $T$ is a (possibly trivial) torus, have the pr…
We consider the Lie group $SU_2$ endowed with a left-invariant axisymmetric Riemannian metric. This means that a metric has eigenvalues $I_1 = I_2, I_3 > 0$. We give an explicit formula for the diameter of such metric. Other words, we compute the diameter of Berger's sphere.
In this paper we present a proof of a Neumann type maximum principle for the Laplace operator on compact Riemannian manifolds. A key p oint is the simple geometric nature of the constant in the a priori estimate of this maximum principle. In particular, this maximum principle can be applied to manifolds with Ricci curvature bounded from below and diameter bounded from above to yield a maximum estimate without dependence on a positive lower bound for the volume.
Inspired by the role geometric structures play in our understanding of surfaces and three-manifolds, and Berger's observation that a surface of constant sectional curvature is determined up to local isometry by its Laplace spectrum, we explore the extent to which compact locally homogeneous three-manifolds are characterized up to local isometry by their spectra. We observe that there are eight `metrically maximal' three-dimensional geometries on which all compact locally homogeneous three-manifolds are modeled and we demonstrate that for five of these geometries the associated compact locally …
For the Laplace operator with Dirichlet boundary conditions on convex domains in $\mathbb H^n$, $n\geq 2$, we prove that the product of the fundamental gap with the square of the diameter can be arbitrarily small for domains of any diameter.
In this paper, by extending the notions of harmonic transplantation and harmonic radius in the Heisenberg group, we give an upper bound for the first eigenvalue for the following Dirichlet problem: $$(P_Ω) \left\{ \begin{array}{lllll} -Δ_{\mathbb{H}^1} u & = & λu & \mbox{in} & Ωu & = & 0 & \mbox{on} & \partial Ω, \end{array} \right.$$ where $ Ω$ is a regular bounded domain of $ \mathbb{H}^1$ with smooth boundary and $Δ_{\mathbb{H}^1}$ is the Kohn-Laplace operator. Using the results of P.Pansu which give the relation between the volume of $Ω$ and the perimeter of its boundary. we prove the foll…
For bicovariant differential calculi on quantum matrix groups a generalisation of classical notions such as metric tensor, Hodge operator, codifferential and Laplace-Beltrami operator for arbitrary k-forms is given. Under some technical assumptions it is proved that Woronowicz' external algebra of left-invariant differential forms either contains a unique form of maximal degree or it is infinite dimensional. Using Jucys-Murphy elements of the Hecke algebra the eigenvalues of the Laplace-Beltrami operator for the Hopf algebra O(SLq(N)) are computed.
Let $(M,g)$ be a connected, closed, orientable Riemannian surface and denote by $λ_k(M,g)$ the $k$-th eigenvalue of the Laplace-Beltrami operator on $(M,g)$. In this paper, we consider the mapping $(M, g)\mapsto λ_k(M,g)$. We propose a computational method for finding the conformal spectrum $Λ^c_k(M,[g_0])$, which is defined by the eigenvalue optimization problem of maximizing $λ_k(M,g)$ for $k$ fixed as $g$ varies within a conformal class $[g_0]$ of fixed volume $textrm{vol}(M,g) = 1$. We also propose a computational method for the problem where $M$ is additionally allowed to vary over surfac…
Consider a smooth closed surface $M$ of fixed genus $\geqslant 2$ with a hyperbolic metric $σ$ of total area $A$. In this article, we study the behavior of geometric and dynamical characteristics (e.g., diameter, Laplace spectrum, Gaussian curvature and entropies) of nonpositively curved smooth metrics with total area $A$ conformally equivalent to $σ$. For such metrics, we show that the diameter is bounded above and the Laplace spectrum is bounded below away from zero by constants which depend on $σ$. On the other hand, we prove that the metric entropy of the geodesic flow with respect to the …
We continue our exploration of the extent to which the spectrum encodes the local geometry of a locally homogeneous three-manifold and find that if $(M,g)$ and $(N,h)$ are a pair of locally homogeneous, locally non-isometric isospectral three-manifolds, where $M$ is an elliptic three-manifold, then $(1)$ $N$ is also an elliptic three-manifold, $(2)$ $M$ and $N$ have fundamental groups of different orders, $(3)$ $(M,g)$ and $(N,h)$ both have non-degenerate Ricci tensors and $(4)$ the metrics $g$ and $h$ are sufficiently far from a metric of constant sectional curvature. We are unaware of any su…
The authors find geodesics, shortest arcs, diameter, cut locus, and conjugate sets for left-invariant sub-Riemannian metric on the Lie group SO(3), under condition that the metric is right-invariant relative to the Lie subgroup $SO(2)\subset SO(3)$.
Let $Σ$ be a closed Riemann surface, $h$ a positive smooth function on $Σ$, $ρ$ and $α$ real numbers. In this paper, we study a generalized mean field equation \begin{align*} -Δu=ρ\left(\dfrac{he^u}{\int_Σhe^u}-\dfrac{1}{\mathrm{Area}\left(Σ\right)}\right)+α\left(u-\fint_Σu\right), \end{align*} where $Δ$ denotes the Laplace-Beltrami operator. We first derive a uniform bound for solutions when $ρ\in (8kπ, 8(k+1)π)$ for some non-negative integer number $k\in \mathbb{N}$ and $α\notin\mathrm{Spec}\left(-Δ\right)\setminus\set{0}$. Then we obtain existence results for $α<λ_1\left(Σ\right)$ by using …
We consider a left invariant Riemannian metric on SO(3) with two equal eigenvalues. We find the cut locus and the equation for the cut time. We find the diameter of such metric and describe the set of all most distant points from the identity. Also we prove that the cut locus and the cut time converge to the cut locus and the cut time in the sub-Riemannian problem on SO(3) as one of the metric eigenvalues tends to infinity.

In this short note, we prove that a bi-invariant Riemannian metric on $\mathrm{Sp}(n)$ is uniquely determined by the spectrum of its Laplace-Beltrami operator within the class of left-invariant metrics on $\mathrm{Sp}(n)$. In other words, on any of these compact simple Lie groups, every left-invariant metric which is not right-invariant cannot be isospectral to a bi-invariant metric. The proof is elementary and uses a very strong spectral obstruction proved by Gordon, Schueth, and Sutton.
We prove lower bound for the first closed or Neumann nonzero eigenvalue of the Laplacian on a compact quaternion-Kähler manifold in terms of dimension, diameter, and scalar curvature lower bound. It is derived as large time implication of the modulus of continuity estimates for solutions of the heat equation. We also establish lower bound for the first Dirichlet eigenvalue in terms of geometric data, via a Laplace comparison theorem for the distance to the boundary function.
We study the eigenvalue problem for the $p$-Laplacian on Kähler manifolds. Our first result is a lower bound for the first nonzero eigenvalue of the $p$-Laplacian on compact Kähler manifolds in terms of dimension, diameter, and lower bounds of holomorphic sectional curvature and orthogonal Ricci curvature for $p\in (1, 2]$. Our second result is a sharp lower bound for the first Dirichlet eigenvalue of the $p$-Laplacian on compact Kähler manifolds with smooth boundary for $p\in (1, \infty)$. Our results generalize corresponding results for the Laplace eigenvalues on Kähler manifolds proved in […
This is a collection of notes on the properties of left-invariant metrics on the eight-dimensional compact Lie group SU(3). Among other topics we investigate the existence of invariant pseudo-Riemannian Einstein metrics on this manifold. We recover the known examples (Killing metric and Jensen metric) in the Riemannian case (signature (8,0)), as well as a Gibbons et al example of signature (6,2), and we describe a new example, which is Lorentzian (ie of signature (7,1). In the latter case the associated metric is left-invariant, with isometry group SU(3) x U(1), and has positive Einstein const…
