Using derivatives of primary fields (null or not) with respect to the conformal dimension, we build infinite families of non-trivial logarithmic representations of the conformal algebra at generic central charge, with Jordan blocks of dimension $2$ or $3$. Each representation comes with one free parameter, which takes fixed values under assumptions on the existence of degenerate fields. This parameter can be viewed as a simpler, normalization-independent redefinition of the logarithmic coupling. In the example of the vacuum module at central charge zero, this parameter characterizes a Jordan block of dimension $3$, and takes the value $-\frac{1}{48}$.
We compute the corresponding non-chiral conformal blocks, although they in general do not satisfy any nontrivial differential equation. We show that these blocks appear in limits of Liouville theory four-point functions.
As an application, we describe the logarithmic structures of the critical two-dimensional $O(n)$ and $Q$-state Potts models at generic central charge. The validity of our description is demonstrated by semi-analytically bootstrapping four-point connectivities in the $Q$-state Potts model to arbitrary precision. Moreover, we provide numerical evidence for the Delfino--Viti conjecture for the three-point connectivity. Our results hold for generic values of $Q$ in the complex plane and beyond.
We have considered clusters of like spin in the Q-Potts model, the spin Potts clusters. Using Monte Carlo simulations, we studied these clusters on a square lattice with periodic boundary conditions for values of Q in [1,4]. We continue the work initiated with Delfino and Viti (2013) by measuring the universal finite size corrections of the two-point connectivity. The numerical data are perfectly compatible with the CFT prediction, thus supporting the existence of a consistent CFT, still unknown, describing the connectivity Potts spin clusters. We provided in particular new insights on the ene…
2D quantum gravity is the idea that a set of discretized surfaces (called map, a graph on a surface), equipped with a graph measure, converges in the large size limit (large number of faces) to a conformal field theory (CFT), and in the simplest case to the simplest CFT known as pure gravity, also known as the gravity dressed (3,2) minimal model. Here we consider the set of planar Strebel graphs (planar trivalent metric graphs) with fixed perimeter faces, with the measure product of Lebesgue measure of all edge lengths, submitted to the perimeter constraints. We prove that expectation values o…
Conformal Field Theories (CFTs) have been used extensively to understand the physics of critical lattice models at equilibrium. However, the applicability of CFT calculations to the behavior of the lattice systems in the out-of-equilibrium setting is not entirely understood. In this work, we compare the CFT results of the evolution of the entanglement spectrum after a quantum quench with numerical calculations of the entanglement spectrum of the three-state Potts model using matrix product state simulations. Our results lead us to conjecture that CFT does not describe the entanglement spectrum…

In this paper we study a connection between Jackiw-Teitelboim (JT) gravity on two-dimensional anti de-Sitter spaces and a semiclassical limit of $c<1$ two-dimensional string theory. The world-sheet theory of the latter consists of a space-like Liouville CFT coupled to a non-rational CFT defined by a time-like Liouville CFT. We show that their actions, disk partition functions and annulus amplitudes perfectly agree with each other, where the presence of boundary terms plays a crucial role. We also reproduce the boundary Schwarzian theory from the Liouville theory description. Then, we identify …
The Rényi entanglement entropy (REE) of the states excited by local operators in two-dimensional irrational conformal field theories (CFTs), especially in Liouville field theory (LFT) and $\mathcal{N}=1$ super-Liouville field theory (SLFT), has been investigated. In particular, the excited states obtained by acting on the vacuum with primary operators were considered. {We start from evaluating the second REE in a compact $c=1$ free boson field theory at generic radius, which is an irrational CFT. Then we focus on the two special irrational CFTs, e.g., LFT and SLFT. In these theories, the secon…
We initiate a study of the boundary version of the square-lattice $Q$-state Potts antiferromagnet, with $Q \in [0,4]$ real, motivated by the fact that the continuum limit of the corresponding bulk model is a non-compact CFT, closely related with the $SL(2,\mathbb{R})_k/U(1)$ Euclidian black-hole coset model. While various types of conformal boundary conditions (discrete and continuous branes) have been formally identified for the the $SL(2,\mathbb{R})_k/U(1)$ coset CFT, we are only able in this work to identify conformal boundary conditions (CBC) leading to a discrete boundary spectrum. The co…
One-dimensional edges of classical systems in two dimension sometimes show surprisingly rich phase transitions and critical phenomena, particularly when the bulk is at criticality. As such a model, we study the surface critical behavior of the 3-state dilute Potts model whose bulk is tuned at the tricritical point. To investigate it more precisely than in the previous works [Y. Deng and H. W. J. Blöte, Phys. Rev. E 70, 035107(R) (2004); Phys. Rev. E 71, 026109 (2005)], we analyze it from the viewpoint of the boundary conformal field theory (BCFT). The complete classification of the conformal b…
We construct correlators in the $W_4$ Toda 2d conformal field theory for a particular class of representations and demonstrate a relation to a $W_2$ (Virasoro) theory with different central charge. The relevance of the classical limits of the constructed 3-point functions and braiding matrices to problems in 4d conformal theories is discussed.
We study the famous example of weakly first order phase transitions in the 1+1D quantum Q-state Potts model at Q>4. We numerically show that these weakly first order transitions have approximately conformal invariance. Specifically, we find entanglement entropy on considerably large system sizes fits perfectly with the universal scaling law of this quantity in the conformal field theories (CFTs). This supports that the weakly first order transitions is proximate to complex fixed points, which are described by recent conjectured complex CFTs. Moreover, the central charge extracted from this fit…
In a series of recent papers, a special kind of AdS$_2$/CFT$_1$ duality was observed: the boundary correlators of elementary fields that appear in the Lagrangian of a 2d conformal theory in rigid AdS$_2$ background are the same as the correlators of the corresponding primary operators in the chiral half of that 2d CFT in flat space restricted to the real line. The examples considered were: (i) the Liouville theory where the operator dual to the Liouville scalar in AdS$_2$ is the stress tensor; (ii) the abelian Toda theory where the operators dual to the Toda scalars are the $\mathcal W$-algebr…
We introduce spectral functions that capture the distribution of OPE coefficients and density of states in two-dimensional conformal field theories, and show that nontrivial upper and lower bounds on the spectral function can be obtained from semidefinite programming. We find substantial numerical evidence indicating that OPEs involving only scalar Virasoro primaries in a c>1 CFT are necessarily governed by the structure constants of Liouville theory. Combining this with analytic results in modular bootstrap, we conjecture that Liouville theory is the unique unitary c>1 CFT whose primaries hav…
We show that any nonextremal black hole can be described by a Liouville theory that lives on its very near horizon region. In classical Liouville theory, the black hole corresponds to a field configuration that reproduces the Rindler metric. In quantum Liouville theory, the black hole state in the CFT is created by the puncture operator that gives rise to a conical singularity with a deficit angle of $2 π$. This state is "heavy" with a nonnormalizable wave function in the minisuperspace approximation. Black hole entropy counts the number of ways the "heavy" black hole state can be obtained by …
We propose an optimization procedure for Euclidean path-integrals that evaluate CFT wave functionals in arbitrary dimensions. The optimization is performed by minimizing certain functional, which can be interpreted as a measure of computational complexity, with respect to background metrics for the path-integrals. In two dimensional CFTs, this functional is given by the Liouville action. We also formulate the optimization for higher dimensional CFTs and, in various examples, find that the optimized hyperbolic metrics coincide with the time slices of expected gravity duals. Moreover, if we opti…
We consider the two dimensional $Q-$ random-cluster Potts model on the torus and at the critical point. We study the probability for two points to be connected by a cluster for general values of $Q\in [1,4]$. Using a Conformal Field Theory (CFT) approach, we provide the leading topological corrections to the plane limit of this probability. These corrections have universal nature and include, as a special case, the universality class of two-dimensional critical percolation. We compare our predictions to Monte Carlo measurements. Finally, we take Monte Carlo measurements of the torus energy one…
Based on the spectrum identified in our earlier work [arXiv:1809.02191], we numerically solve the bootstrap to determine four-point correlation functions of the geometrical connectivities in the $Q$-state Potts model. Crucial in our approach is the existence of "interchiral conformal blocks", which arise from the degeneracy of fields with conformal weight $h_{r,1}$, with $r\in\mathbb{N}^*$, and are related to the underlying presence of the "interchiral algebra" introduced in [arXiv:1207.6334]. We also find evidence for the existence of "renormalized" recursions, replacing those that follow fro…
Recently, string theory on $\text{AdS}_3 \times \text{S}^3 \times \mathbb{T}^4$ with one unit of NS-NS flux ($k=1$) was argued to be exactly dual to the symmetric orbifold of $ \mathbb{T}^4$, and in particular, the full (unprotected) spectrum was matched between the two descriptions. This duality was later extended to the case with higher NS-NS background flux for which the long string sector was argued to be described by the symmetric product orbifold of $(\mathcal{N}=4$ $\text{Liouville}) \times \mathbb{T}^4$. In this paper we study correlation functions for the bosonic analogue of this dual…
It was recently observed that boundary correlators of the elementary scalar field of the Liouville theory on AdS$_2$ background are the same (up to a non-trivial proportionality coefficient) as the correlators of the chiral stress tensor of the Liouville CFT on the complex plane restricted to the real line. The same relation generalizes to the conformal abelian Toda theory: boundary correlators of Toda scalars on AdS$_2$ are directly related to the correlation functions of the chiral $\mathcal W$-symmetry generators in the Toda CFT and thus are essentially controlled by the underlying infinite…
In this paper we will consider the Almheiri-Polchinski model of the AdS$_2$ back reaction coupled with Liouville field, which is necessary for quantum consistency. In this model, the Liouville field is determined classically by a bulk conformal transformation. The boundary time is also reparametrized by this transformation. It is shown that the on-shell action on the boundary for the gravity sector is given by a bulk integral containing the Liouville field. This integral stems from Weyl anomaly and is SL(2,R) invariant. A prescription is given for computing correlation functions of the operato…

We discuss walking behavior in gauge theories and weak first-order phase transitions in statistical physics. Despite appearing in very different systems (QCD below the conformal window, the Potts model, deconfined criticality) these two phenomena both imply approximate scale invariance in a range of energies and have the same RG interpretation: a flow passing between pairs of fixed point at complex coupling. We discuss what distinguishes a real theory from a complex theory and call these fixed points complex CFTs. By using conformal perturbation theory we show how observables of the walking th…
The replica wormholes are a key to the existence of the islands that play a central role in a recent proposal for the resolution of the black hole information paradox. In this paper, we study the replica wormholes in the JT gravity, a model of two-dimensional quantum gravity coupled to a non-dynamical dilaton, by making use of the 2$d$ conformal field theory (CFT) description, namely, the Liouville theory coupled to the $(2,p)$ minimal matter in the $p\to\infty$ limit. In the Liouville CFT description, the replica wormholes are created by the twist operators and the gravitational part of the b…
For string theory on AdS$_3$ with pure NS-NS flux a complete set of DDF operators is constructed, from which one can read off the symmetry algebra of the spacetime CFT. Together with an analysis of the spacetime spectrum, this allows us to show that the CFT dual of superstring theory on ${\rm AdS}_3 \times {\rm S}^3 \times \mathbb{T}^4$ for generic NS-NS flux is the symmetric orbifold of $({\cal N}=4$ Liouville theory$)\times \mathbb{T}^4$. For the case of minimal flux ($k=1$), the Liouville factor disappears, and we just obtain the symmetric orbifold of $\mathbb{T}^4$, thereby giving further …
The generating functional of stress tensor correlation functions in two-dimensional conformal field theory is the nonlocal Polyakov action, or equivalently, the Liouville or Alekseev-Shatashvili action. I review its holographic derivation within the AdS$_3$/CFT$_2$ correspondence, both in metric and Chern-Simons formulations. I also provide a detailed comparison with the well-known Hamiltonian reduction of three-dimensional gravity to a flat Liouville theory, and conclude that the two results are unrelated. In particular, the flat Liouville action is still off-shell with respect to bulk equati…

We review the relation between four-dimensional global conformal blocks and field propagation in ${\rm AdS_5}$. Following the standard argument that marginal perturbations should backreact in the geometry, we turn to the study of scalar fields in the generic Kerr-${\rm AdS_5}$ geometry. On one hand, the result for scattering coefficients can be obtained exactly using the isomonodromy technique, giving exact expressions in terms of $c=1$ chiral conformal blocks. On the other hand, one can use the analogy between the scalar field equations to the Level 2 null field Ward identity in two dimension…

It has long been understood that non-trivial Conformal Field Theories (CFTs) with vanishing central charge ($c=0$) are logarithmic. So far however, the structure of the identity module -- the (left and right) Virasoro descendants of the identity field -- had not been elucidated beyond the stress-energy tensor $T$ and its logarithmic partner $t$ (the solution of the "$c\to 0$ catastrophe"). In this paper, we determine this structure together with the associated OPE of primary fields up to level $h=\bar{h}=2$ for polymers and percolation CFTs. This is done by taking the $c\to 0$ limit of $O(n)$ …
We compute the crossover exponents of all quadratic and cubic deformations of critical field theories with permutation symmetry $S_q$ in $d=6-ε$ (Landau-Potts field theories) and $d=4-ε$ (hypertetrahedral models) up to three loops. We use our results to determine the $ε$-expansion of the fractal dimension of critical clusters in the most interesting cases, which include spanning trees and forests ($q\to0$), and bond percolations ($q\to1$). We also explicitly verify several expected degeneracies in the spectrum of relevant operators for natural values of $q$ upon analytic continuation, which are…
Recently, entropy corrections on nonorientable manifolds such as the Klein bottle are proposed as a universal characterization of critical systems with an emergent conformal field theory (CFT). We show that entropy correction on the Klein bottle can be interpreted as a boundary effect via transforming the Klein bottle into an orientable manifold with nonlocal boundary interactions. The interpretation reveals the conceptual connection of the Klein bottle entropy with the celebrated Affleck-Ludwig entropy in boundary CFT. We propose a generic scheme to extract these universal boundary entropies …
Many two-dimensional conformal field theories have an alternative integrable scattering description, which reproduces their spectrum of conformal weights. Taking as an example the case of the Lee-Yang nonunitary CFT and the 3-state Potts minimal model, we derive formulas, in terms of their integrable description, for the OPE coefficients of a certain specific primary operator and two identical but otherwise essentially arbitrary operators. As a side result we also obtain a novel formula for the mass-gap relation for the integrable massive deformation of the CFT. These results are obtained thro…

Under the assumption that degenerate fields exist, diagonal CFTs such as Liouville theory can be solved analytically using the conformal bootstrap method. Here we generalize this approach to non-diagonal CFTs, i.e. CFTs whose primary fields have nonzero conformal spins. Assuming generic values of the central charge, we find that the non-diagonal sector of the spectrum must be parametrized by two integer numbers. We then derive and solve the equations that determine how three- and four-point structure constants depend on these numbers. In order to test these results, we numerically check crossi…
