We consider sets in $\mathbb R^N$ which minimise, for fixed volume, the sum of the perimeter and a non-local term given by the double integral of a kernel $g:\mathbb R^N\setminus\{0\}\to \mathbb R^+$. We establish some general existence and regularity results for minimisers. In the two-dimensional case we show that balls are the unique minimisers if the perimeter-dominated regime, for a wide class of functions $g$.
We study a variational model for transition layers in thin ferromagnetic films with an underlying functional that combines an Allen-Cahn type structure with an additional nonlocal interaction term. The model represents the magnetisation by a map from $\mathbb{R}$ to $\mathbb{S}^1$. Thus it has a topological invariant in the form of a winding number, and we study minimisers subject to a prescribed winding number. As shown in our previous paper Ignat-Moser (JDE 2017), the nonlocal term gives rise to solutions that would not be present for a functional including only the (local) Allen-Cahn terms.…
We consider both the minimisation of a class of nonlocal interaction energies over non-negative measures with unit mass and a class of singular integral equations of the first kind of Fredholm type. Our setting covers applications to dislocation pile-ups, contact problems, fracture mechanics and random matrix theory. Our main result shows that both the minimisation problems and the related singular integral equations have the same unique solution, which provides new regularity results on the minimiser of the energy and new positivity results on the solutions to singular integral equations.
We provide a proof of mean-field convergence of first-order dissipative or conservative dynamics of particles with Riesz-type singular interaction (the model interaction is an inverse power $s$ of the distance for any $0<s<d$) when assuming a certain regularity of the solutions to the limiting evolution equations. It relies on a modulated-energy approach, as introduced in previous works where it was restricted to the Coulomb and super-Coulombic cases. The method is also capable of incorporating multiplicative noise of transport type into the dynamics. It relies in extending functional inequali…
We study a minimisation problem in $L^p$ and $L^\infty$ for certain cost functionals, where the class of admissible mappings is constrained by the Navier-Stokes equations. Problems of this type are motivated by variational data assimilation for atmospheric flows arising in weather forecasting. Herein we establish the existence of PDE-constrained minimisers for all $p$, and also that $L^p$ minimisers converge to $L^\infty$ minimisers as $p\to\infty$. We further show that $L^p$ minimisers solve an Euler-Lagrange system. Finally, all special $L^\infty$ minimisers constructed via approximation by …
We consider the mean-field limit of systems of particles with singular interactions of the type $-\log|x|$ or $|x|^{-s}$, with $0< s<d-2$, and with an additive noise in dimensions $d \geq 3$. We use a modulated-energy approach to prove a quantitative convergence rate to the solution of the corresponding limiting PDE. When $s>0$, the convergence is global in time, and it is the first such result valid for both conservative and gradient flows in a singular setting on $\mathbb{R}^d$. The proof relies on an adaptation of an argument of Carlen-Loss to show a decay rate of the solution to the limiti…
In this paper we prove the fractional Gagliardo-Nirenberg inequality on homogeneous Lie groups. Also, we establish weighted fractional Caffarelli-Kohn-Nirenberg inequality and Lyapunov-type inequality for the Riesz potential on homogeneous Lie groups. The obtained Lyapunov inequality for the Riesz potential is new already in the classical setting of $\mathbb{R}^{N}$. As an application, we give two-sided estimate for the first eigenvalue of the Riesz potential. Also, we obtain Lyapunov inequality for the system of the fractional $p$-sub-Laplacian equations and give an application to estimate it…
We obtain weak-type $(p, p)$ endpoint bounds for Bochner-Riesz means for the Hermite operator $H=-Δ+|x|^2$ in ${\mathbb R}^n, n\geq 2$ and for other related operators for $1\leq p\leq 2n/(n+2)$, extending earlier results of Thangavelu and of Karadzhov.
In this paper we establish new $L^1$-type estimates for the classical Riesz potentials of order $α\in (0, N)$: \[ \|I_αu\|_{L^{N/(N-α)}(\mathbb{R}^N)} \leq C \|Ru\|_{L^1(\mathbb{R}^N;\mathbb{R}^N)}. \] This sharpens the result of Stein and Weiss on the mapping properties of Riesz potentials on the real Hardy space $\mathcal{H}^1(\mathbb{R}^N)$ and provides a new family of $L^1$-Sobolev inequalities for the Riesz fractional gradient.
In this work we are concerned with Fefferman-Stein type inequalities. More precisely, given an operator $T$ and some $p$, $1<p<\infty$, we look for operators $\mathcal{M}$ such that the inequality $$\int |Tf|^pw\leq C\int |f|^p \mathcal{M}w$$ holds true for any weight $w$. Specifically, we are interested in the case of $T$ being any first or second order Riesz transform associated to the Schrödinger operator $L=-Δ+ V$, with $V$ a non-negative function satisfying an appropriate reverse-Hölder condition. For the Riesz-Schrödinger transforms $\nabla L^{-1/2}$ and $\nabla^2 L^{-1}$ we make use of …
We investigate $L^p$ boundedness of the maximal Bochner-Riesz means for self-adjoint operators of elliptic type. Assuming the finite speed of propagation for the associated wave operator, from the restriction type estimates we establish the sharp $L^p$ boundedness of the maximal Bochner-Riesz means for the elliptic operators. As applications, we obtain the sharp $L^p$ maximal bounds for the Schrödinger operators on asymptotically conic manifolds, the harmonic oscillator and its perturbations or elliptic operators on compact manifolds.
In this paper we introduce a model for hard spheres interacting through attractive Riesz type potentials, and we study its thermodynamic limit. We show that the tail energy enforces optimal packing and round macroscopic shapes.
We consider a class of non-doubling manifolds $\mathcal{M}$ defined by taking connected sum of finite Riemannian manifolds with dimension N which has the form $\mathbb{R}^{n_i}\times \mathcal{M}_i$ and the Euclidean dimension $n_i$ are not necessarily all the same. In arXiv:1805.00132v3 [math.AP], Hassell and Sikora proved that the Riesz transform on $\mathcal{M}$ is weak type $(1,1)$, bounded on $L^{p}(\mathcal{M})$ for all $1<p<n^*$ where $n^* = \min_k n_k$ and is unbounded for $p \ge n^*$. In this note we show that the Riesz transform is bounded from Lorentz space $L^{n^* ,1}(\mathcal{M})$ …
We consider Riesz-type nonlocal interaction energies over polygons. We prove the analog of the Riesz inequality in this discrete setting for triangles and quadrilaterals, and obtain that among all $N$-gons with fixed area, the nonlocal energy is maximized by a regular polygon, for $N=3,4$. Further we derive necessary first-order stationarity conditions for a polygon with respect to a restricted class of variations, which will then be used to characterize regular $N$-gons, for $N=3,4$, as solutions to an overdetermined free boundary problem.
We prove the stability of the ball as global minimizer of an attractive shape functional under volume constraint, by means of mass transportation arguments. The stability exponent is $1/2$ and it is sharp. Moreover, we use such stability result together with the quantitative (possibly fractional) isoperimetric inequality to prove that the ball is a global minimizer of a shape functional involving both an attractive and a repulsive term with a sufficiently large fixed volume and with a suitable (possibly fractional) perimeter penalization.
Let $R_j$ denote the $j^{\text{th}}$ Riesz transform on $\mathbb{R}^n$. We prove that there exists an absolute constant $C>0$ such that \begin{align*} |\{|R_jf|>λ\}|\leq C\left(\frac{1}λ\|f\|_{L^1(\mathbb{R}^n)}+\sup_ν |\{|R_jν|>λ\}|\right) \end{align*} for any $λ>0$ and $f \in L^1(\mathbb{R}^n)$, where the above supremum is taken over measures of the form $ν=\sum_{k=1}^Na_kδ_{c_k}$ for $N \in \mathbb{N}$, $c_k \in \mathbb{R}^n$, and $a_k \in \mathbb{R}^+$ with $\sum_{k=1}^N a_k \leq 16\|f\|_{L^1(\mathbb{R}^n)}$. This shows that to establish dimensional estimates for the weak-type $(1,1)$ ineq…
In this paper, we consider the following singular integral \begin{equation*} T_jf(x)=K_j*f(x), K_j(x)=\frac{x_j}{|x|^{n+1-β}}, \end{equation*} where $x\in R^n, 0\le β<n, j=1,2,\cdots, n$. When $β=0$, it corresponds to the Riesz transform. We will make an estimate the $L^q (1<q<\infty)$ norm of $T_jf$, which holds uniformly for $0\leβ<\frac{n(q-1)}{q}$. In particular, when $β=0$, the strong $(q,q)$ type estimate of the Riesz transform for $1<q<\infty$ is recovered from the obtained estimate.
We show that the operator \[ T_{K,s_1,s_2}f(z) := \int_{\mathbb{R}^n} A_{K,s_1,s_2}(z_1,z_2) f(z_2)\, dz_2 \] is a Calderon-Zygmund operator. Here for $K \in L^\infty(\mathbb{R}^n \times \mathbb{R}^n)$, and $s,s_1,s_2 \in (0,1)$ with $s_1+s_2 = 2s$ we have \[ A_{K,s_1,s_2}(z_1,z_2) = \int_{\mathbb{R}^n} \int_{\mathbb{R}^n} \frac{K(x,y) \left (|x-z_1|^{s_1-n} -|y-z_1|^{s_1-n} \right )\, \left (|x-z_2|^{s_2-n} -|y-z_2|^{s_2-n}\right )}{|x-y|^{n+2s}}\, dx\, dy. \] This operator is motivated by the recent work by Mengesha-Schikorra-Yeepo where it appeared as analogue of the Riesz transforms for th…
We consider an aggregation-diffusion model, where the diffusion is nonlinear of porous medium type and the aggregation is governed by the Riesz potential of order s. The addition of a quadratic diffusion term produces a more precise competition with the aggregation term for small s, as they have the same scaling if s=0. We prove existence and uniqueness of stationary states and we characterize their asymptotic behavior as s goes to zero. Moreover, we prove existence of gradient flow solutions to the evolution problem by applying the JKO scheme.
We consider Riesz transforms of any order associated to an Ornstein--Uhlenbeck operator $\mathcal L$, with covariance $Q$ given by a real, symmetric and positive definite matrix, and with drift $B$ given by a real matrix whose eigenvalues have negative real parts. In this general Gaussian context, we prove that a Riesz transform is of weak type $(1,1)$ with respect to the invariant measure if and only if its order is at most $2$.
This is an attempt to build Banach space valued theory for certain singular integrals on Hamming cube. Of course all estimates below are dimension independent, and we tried to find ultimate sharp assumptions on the Banach space for a corresponding operators to be bounded. In certain cases we succeeded, although there are still many open questions, some of them are listed in the last Section. Using the approach of \cite{IVHV} and also quantum random variables approach of \cite{ELP} we generalize several theorems of Pisier \cite{P} and Hytönen-Naor \cite{HN}. We also improve the constant in $L^1…
We consider the problem of finding and describing minimisers of the Rayleigh quotient \[ Λ_\infty \, :=\, \inf_{u\in \mathcal{W}^{2,\infty}(Ω)\setminus\{0\} }\frac{\|Δu\|_{L^\infty(Ω)}}{\|u\|_{L^\infty(Ω)}}, \] where $Ω\subseteq \mathbb{R}^n$ is a bounded $C^{1,1}$ domain and $\mathcal{W}^{2,\infty}(Ω)$ is a class of weakly twice differentiable functions satisfying either $u=0$ or $u=|\mathrm{D} u|=0$ on $\partial Ω$. Our first main result, obtained through approximation by $L^p$-problems as $p\to \infty$, is the existence of a minimiser $u_\infty \in \mathcal{W}^{2,\infty}(Ω)$ satisfying \[ \…
Let $Ω\subsetneq\mathbb R^{n+1}$ be open and let $μ$ be some measure supported on $\partialΩ$ such that $μ(B(x,r))\leq C\,r^n$ for all $x\in\mathbb R^{n+1}$, $r>0$. We show that if the harmonic measure in $Ω$ satisfies some scale invariant $A_\infty$ type conditions with respect to $μ$, then the $n$-dimensional Riesz transform $$R_μf(x) = \int \frac{x-y}{|x-y|^{n+1}}\,f(y)\,dμ(y)$$ is bounded in $L^2(μ)$. We do not assume any doubling condition on $μ$. We also consider the particular case when $Ω$ is a bounded uniform domain. To this end, we need first to obtain sharp estimates that relate the…

Let $L_k=-Δ_k+V$ be the Dunk- Schrödinger operators, where $Δ_k=\sum_{j=1}^dT_j^2$ is the Dunkl Laplace operator associated to the dunkl operators $T_j$ on $\mathbb{R}^d$ and $V$ is a nonnegative potential function. In the first part of this paper we introduce the Riesz transform $R_j= T_j L_k^{-1/2}$ as an $L^2$- bounded operator and we prove that is of weak type $(1,1)$ and then is bounded on $L^p(\mathbb{R}^d,dμ_k(x))$ for $1<p\leq 2$. The second pat is devoted to the $L^p$ smoothing of the semigroup generated by $L_k$, when $V$ belongs to the standard Koto class.
In this work we obtain a geometric characterization of the measures $μ$ in $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$ with polynomial upper growth of degree $n$ such that the $n$-dimensional Riesz transform $\mathcal{R}μ(x) = \int \frac{x-y}{|x-y|^{n+1}}\,dμ(y)$ belongs to $L^2(μ)$, under the assumption that $μ$ satisfies the following Wolff energy estimate, for any ball $B\subset\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$: $$\int_B \int_0^\infty \left(\frac{μ(B(x,r))}{r^{n-\frac38}}\right)^2\,\frac{dr}r\,dμ(x)\leq M\,\bigg(\frac{μ(2B)}{r(B)^{n-\frac38}}\bigg)^2\,μ(2B).$$ More precisely, we show that $μ$ satisfies the following estimate: $$\|…
We study the minimization of a spectral functional made as the sum of the first eigenvalue of the Dirichlet Laplacian and the relative strength of a Riesz-type interaction functional. We show that when the Riesz repulsion strength is below a critical value, existence of minimizers occurs. Then we prove, by means of an expansion analysis, that the ball is a rigid minimizer when the Riesz repulsion is small enough. Eventually we show that for certain regimes of the Riesz repulsion, regular minimizers do not exist.
