We explore the Higgs branches of five-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=1$ quiver gauge theories at finite coupling from the paradigm of M-theory on local Calabi-Yau threefolds described as $\mathbb{C}^\ast$-fibrations over local K3's. By properly counting local deformations of singularities, we find results compatible with unitary as opposed to special unitary gauge groups. We interpret these results by dualizing to both IIA on local K3's with D6-branes, and to IIB with 5-branes. Finally, we find that, by compactifying the $\mathbb{C}^\ast$-fibers to tori, a well-known Stückelberg mechanism eliminates Abelian factors, and provides missing Higgs branch moduli in a very interesting way. This is also explained from the dual IIA and IIB viewpoints.
We study the Higgs branches of five-dimensional N=1 rank-zero theories obtained from M-theory on two classes non-toric non-compact Calabi-Yau threefolds: Reid's pagodas, and Laufer's examples. Our approach consists in reducing to IIA with D6-branes and O6-planes, and computing the open-string spectra giving rise to hypermultiplets. Starting with the seven-dimensional worldvolume theories, we switch on T-brane backgrounds to give rise to bound states with angles. We observe that the resulting partially Higgsed 5d theories have discrete gauge groups, from which we readily deduce the geometry of …
We study the dynamics of M-theory on isolated non-toric Calabi-Yau threefold singularities of type $(A_j,A_l)$ and $(A_k,D_n)$, engineering five-dimensional rank-zero SCFTs. Our approach consists in mapping these backgrounds to type IIA string theory with D6 branes at angles and O6$^{-}$ planes, computing the five-dimensional open string modes located at the brane intersections. This permits us to characterize the Higgs Branches of these theories as algebraic varieties, determine the flavour and gauge group and inspect subtleties related to T-branes. Our methods apply for all the considered si…
Even though for generic $\mathcal{N}=1$ theories it is not possible to separate distinct branches of supersymmetric vacua, in this paper we study a special class of $\mathcal{N}=1$ SCFTs, these of Class $\mathcal{S}_k$ for which it is possible to define Coulomb and Higgs branches precisely as for the $\mathcal{N}=2$ theories of Class $\mathcal{S}$ from which they descend. We study the BPS operators that parameterise these branches of vacua using the different limits of the superconformal index as well as the Coulomb and Higgs branch Hilbert Series. Finally, with the tools we have developed, we…
In this paper, we study on the one-plus-half monopole configuration in SU(2) Yang-Mills-Higgs theory when the $ϕ$-winding number, $n$, runs from 2 to 4 and for a range of Higgs coupling constant, $λ_b \leq λ\leq 40$, where $λ_b$ is the lower bound, below which no solution can be found. Bifurcation and transition are observed for $n > 2$ when the Higgs coupling constant is larger than some critical value $λ_c$ and transitional value $λ_t$, respectively. Two different branches with energy higher than the fundamental solution are observed for both $n = 3$ and $4$. We also observed a new branch wi…
The physics of M5 branes placed near an M9 plane on an A-type ALE singularity exhibits a variety of phenomena that introduce additional massless degrees of freedom. There are tensionless strings whenever two M5 branes coincide or whenever an M5 brane approaches the M9 plane. These systems do not admit a low-energy Lagrangian description so new techniques are desirable to shed light on the physics of these phenomena. The 6-dimensional N=(1,0) world-volume theory on the M5 branes is composed of massless vector, tensor, and hyper multiplets, and has two branches of the vacuum moduli space where e…
We describe how the geometry of the Higgs branch of 5d superconformal field theories is transformed under movement along the extended Coulomb branch. Working directly with the (unitary) magnetic quiver, we demonstrate a correspondence between Fayet-Iliopoulos deformations in 3d and 5d mass deformations. When the Higgs branch has multiple cones, characterised by a collection of magnetic quivers, the mirror map is not globally well-defined, however we are able to utilize the correspondence to establish a local version of mirror symmetry. We give several detailed examples of deformations, includi…
We study the Higgs branch of 5d superconformal theories engineered from brane webs with orientifold five-planes. We propose a generalization of the rules to derive magnetic quivers from brane webs pioneered in arXiv:2004.04082, by analyzing theories that can be described with a brane web with and without O5 planes. Our proposed magnetic quivers include novel features, such as hypermultiplets transforming in the fundamental-fundamental representation of two gauge nodes, antisymmetric matter, and $\mathbb{Z}_2$ gauge nodes. We test our results by computing the Coulomb and Higgs branch Hilbert se…
We solve a long standing problem on the computation of the Higgs branch $\mathcal{H}$ of linear quivers with 8 supercharges and with both unitary and special unitary gauge nodes. The solution uses the concept of magnetic quivers, where components of $\mathcal{H}$ are described as 3d $\mathcal{N}=4$ Coulomb branches. When the starting quiver is good, there is a single component in $\mathcal{H}$ and the magnetic quiver is a 3d mirror. The magnetic quivers are obtained from studying the brane web for an auxiliary 5d theory (with only special unitary gauge groups), constrained by a new notion call…
We derive the structure of the Higgs branch of 5d superconformal field theories or gauge theories from their realization as a generalized toric polygon (or dot diagram). This approach is motivated by a dual, tropical curve decomposition of the $(p,q)$ 5-brane-web system. We define an edge coloring, which provides a decomposition of the generalized toric polygon into a refined Minkowski sum of sub-polygons, from which we compute the magnetic quiver. The Coulomb branch of the magnetic quiver is then conjecturally identified with the 5d Higgs branch. Furthermore, from partial resolutions, we iden…
M5 branes on a D-type ALE singularity display various phenomena that introduce additional massless degrees of freedom. The M5 branes are known to fractionate on a D-type singularity. Whenever two fractional M5 branes coincide, tensionless strings arise. Therefore, these systems do not admit a low-energy Lagrangian description. Focusing on the 6-dimensional N=(1,0) world-volume theories on the M5 branes, the vacuum moduli space has two branches were either the scalar fields in the tensor multiplet or the scalars in the hypermultiplets acquire a non-trivial vacuum expectation value. As suggested…
Five- and four-dimensional superconformal field theories with eight supercharges arise from canonical threefold singularities in M-theory and Type IIB string theory, respectively. We study their Coulomb and Higgs branches using crepant resolutions and deformations of the singularities. We propose a relation between the resulting moduli spaces, by compactifying the theories to 3d, followed by 3d $\mathcal{N}=4$ mirror symmetry and an $S$-type gauging of an abelian flavor symmetry. In particular, we use this correspondence to determine the Higgs branch of some 5d SCFTs and their magnetic quivers…
Compactification of M-theory and of IIB string theory on threefold canonical singularities gives rise to superconformal field theories (SCFTs) in 5d and 4d, respectively. The resolutions and deformations of the singularities encode salient features of the SCFTs and of their moduli spaces. In this paper, we build on Part 0 of this series (arXiv:2007.15600) and further explore the physics of SCFTs arising from isolated hypersurface singularities. We study in detail these canonical isolated hypersurface singularities that admit a smooth Calabi-Yau (crepant) resolution. Their 5d and 4d physics is …
The conifold is a basic example of a noncompact Calabi-Yau threefold that admits a simple flop, and in M-theory, gives rise to a 5d hypermultiplet at low energies, realized by an M2-brane wrapped on the vanishing sphere. We develop a novel gauge-theoretic method to construct new classes of examples that generalize the simple flop to so-called length l=1,...,6. The method allows us to naturally read off the Gopakumar-Vafa invariants. Although they share similar properties to the beloved conifold, these threefolds are expected to admit M2-bound states of higher degree. We demonstrate this throug…
Every four-dimensional ${\cal N}=2$ superconformal field theory comes equipped with an intricate algebraic invariant, the associated vertex operator algebra. The relationships between this invariant and more conventional protected quantities in the same theories have yet to be completely understood. In this work, we aim to characterize the connection between the Higgs branch of the moduli space of vacua (as an algebraic geometric entity) and the associated vertex operator algebra. Ultimately our proposal is simple, but its correctness requires the existence of a number of nontrivial null vecto…
We present a general prescription for constructing 3d $\mathcal{N}=4$ Lagrangians for the IR SCFTs that arise from the circle reduction of a large class of Argyres-Douglas theories. The resultant Lagrangian gives a realization of the Higgs branch of the 4d SCFT as a quiver variety, up to a set of decoupled interacting SCFTs with empty Higgs branches. As representative examples, we focus on the families $(A_{p-N-1}, A_{N-1})$ and $D_p(SU(N))$. The Lagrangian in question is generically a non-ADE-type quiver gauge theory involving only unitary gauge nodes with fundamental and bifundamental hyperm…
The Higgs branches of the world-volume theories for multiple M5 branes on an $A_k$ or $D_k$-type ALE space are known to host a variety of fascinating properties, such as the small $E_8$ instanton transition or the discrete gauging phenomena. This setup can be further enriched by the inclusion of boundary conditions, which take the form of $SU(k)$ or $SO(2k)$ partitions, respectively. Unlike the $A$-type case, $D$-type boundary conditions are eventually accompanied by negative brane numbers in the Type IIA brane realisation. While this may seem discouraging at first, we demonstrate that these s…
We study two types of discrete operations on Coulomb branches of $3d$ $\mathcal{N}=4$ quiver gauge theories using both abelianisation and the monopole formula. We generalise previous work on discrete quotients of Coulomb branches and introduce novel wreathed quiver theories. We further study quiver folding which produces Coulomb branches of non-simply laced quivers.
