We show the existence of non-Hermitian degeneracies, known as exceptional points, in the collective mode spectrum of Fermi liquids with quadrupolar interactions. Through a careful analysis of the analytic properties of the dynamic quadrupolar susceptibility, we show that, in the weak attractive region, two stable collective modes coalesce to an exceptional point. We completely characterize this singularity, explicitly showing its topological properties. Experimental signatures are also discussed.
We describe the experimentally revealed by Sichelschmidt et al, Phys. Rev. Lett. 91 (2003) 156401, g tensor, g_perpendicular=3.561 and g_parallel=0.17, at 5 K by means of crystal field interactions of the 4f13 configuration of the Yb3+ ion of YbRh2Si2 in a slightly orthorhombically distorted tetragonal crystal field. We have shown that the temperature dependence of the quadrupolar interactions Q(T) of the Yb nucleous will help to distinguish between Gamma_7 and Gamma_6 ground state. For the Gamma_7 ground state Q(T) is expected to exhibits an anomalous dependence. Keywords: heavy fermion, crys…
We consider a Fermi liquid model with density-density as well as quadrupolar forward scattering interactions parametrized by the Landau parameters $F_0$ and $F_2$. Using bosonization and a decimation technique, we compute collective modes and spectral functions for a huge range of interactions, ranging from strong repulsion to strong attraction in either angular momentum channels. We present a dynamical phase diagram showing a region of parameters where the collective modes structure changes abruptly, possibly signaling a dynamical phase transition.
We have studied the low-temperature properties of Pr$_{x}$La$_{1-x}$Pb$_{3}$ with non-Kramers $Γ_{3}$ quadrupolar moments of the crystal-electric-field ground state, for a wide concentration range of Pr ions. For $x$$\le$0.05, the specific heat $C/T$ increases monotonically below $T$=1.5 K, which can be scaled with a characteristic temperature $T^{*}$ defined at each concentration $x$. The electrical resistivity $ρ$$(T)$ in the corresponding temperature region shows a marked decrease deviating from a Fermi-liquid behavior $ρ$$(T)$$\propto$$T^{2}$. The Kondo effect arising from the correlation …
PrV2Al20 is the heavy fermion superconductor based on the cubic Gamma3 doublet that exhibits non- magnetic quadrupolar ordering below ~ 0.6 K. Our magnetotransport study on PrV2Al20 reveals field-induced quadrupolar quantum criticality at Hc ~ 11 T applied along the [111] direction. Near the critical field Hc required to suppress the quadrupolar state, we find a marked enhancement of the resistivity rho(H, T), a divergent effective mass of quasiparticles and concomitant non-Fermi liquid (NFL) behavior (i.e. rho(T) ~ T^n with n < 0.5). We also observe the Shubnikov de Haas-effect above ?Hc, ind…
We report the discovery of giant and anisotropic magnetoresistance due to the orbital rearrangement in a non-magnetic correlated metal. In particular, we measured the magnetoresistance under fields up to 31.4 T in the cubic Pr-based heavy fermion superconductor PrV$_2$Al$_{20}$ with a non-magnetic $Γ_3$ doublet ground state, exhibiting antiferro-quadrupole ordering below 0.7 K. For the [100] direction, we find that the high-field phase appears between 12 T and 25 T, accompanied by a large jump at 12 T in the magnetoresistance ($ΔMR \sim $ 100 $\% $) and in the anisotropic magnetoresistivity (A…
We study a realistic Kondo model for crystal field quartet ground states having magnetic and non-magnetic (quadrupolar) exchange couplings with conduction electrons, using the numerical renormalization group method. We focus on a local effect dependent on singlet excited states coupled to the quartet, which reduces the non-magnetic coupling significantly and drives non-Fermi liquid behavior observed in the calculated quadrupolar susceptibility. A crossover from the non-Fermi liquid state to the Fermi liquid state is characterized by a small energy scale very sensitive to the non-magnetic coupl…
Exceptional points, which are topological non-Hermitian degeneracies, show up in the collective mode spectrum of Fermi Liquids with high angular momentum interactions. In this paper, we look for signatures of these non-trivial singularities by computing the AC conductivity of Fermi liquids with dipolar and quadrupolar interactions in a narrow slab. We show that the finite size of the slab imprints clear signatures of the structures of the collective mode spectrum in the conductivity as well as in the dephasing between the electric field and the current density in a wide range of coupling const…
We studied the electronic structure of the heavy fermion compound Yb(Ru$_{1-x}$Rh$_{x}$)$_2$Ge$_2$ with $x=0$ and nominally $x=0.125$ using ARPES and LDA calculations. We find a valence band structure of Yb corresponding to a non-integer valence close to $3+$. The three observed crystal electric field levels with a splitting of 32 and 75 meV confirm the suggested configuration with a quasi-quartet ground state. The experimentally determined band structure of the conduction electrons with predominantly Ru $4d$ character is well reproduced by our calculations. YbRu$_2$Ge$_2$ undergoes a non-magn…
A model for crystal field triplet ground states on rare earth or actinide ions with dipolar and quadrupolar couplings to conduction electrons is studied for the first time with renormalization group methods. The quadrupolar coupling leads to a new nontrivial, non-Fermi liquid fixed point, which survives in an intermediate valence Anderson model. The calculated magnetic susceptibility displays one parameter scaling, going as $T^{-α}$ ($α\approx 0.4$) at intermediate temperatures, reminiscent of the non-Fermi liquid alloy UCu_{5-x}Pd_x.
We investigate the mixed-valent regime of a two-configuration Anderson impurity model for uranium ions, with separate quadrupolar and magnetic doublets. With a new Monte Carlo approach and the non-crossing approximation we find: (i) A non-Fermi-liquid fixed point with two-channel Kondo model critical behavior; (ii) Distinct energy scales for screening the low-lying and excited doublets; (iii) A semi-quantitative explanation of magnetic-susceptibility data for U$_{1-x}$Th$_x$Be$_{13}$ assuming 60-70% quadrupolar doublet ground-state weight, supporting the quadrupolar-Kondo interpretation.
In non-Kramers Kondo systems with a quadrupolar degrees of freedom, an ordinary magnetic Kondo effect can compete with the quadrupolar Kondo effect. We discuss such competition keeping Pr$T_{2}$Zn$_{20}$ ($T$=Ir, Rh) and Pr$T_{2}$Al$_{20}$ ($T$=V, Ti) in mind, where the $Γ_{3}$ non-Kramers crystalline-electric-field (CEF) doublet ground state is realized in Pr$^{3+}$ ion with $(4f)^{2}$ configuration under cubic symmetry. The quadrupolar Kondo effect can be described by the two-channel Kondo model, which leads to the local non-Fermi-liquid (NFL) ground state, while the magnetic Kondo effect fa…
We report Raman-scattering results of YbRu$_2$Ge$_2$ single crystals to explore the phononic and crystal-field (CF) excitations. This heavy-fermion metal is suggested to enter a ferroquadrupolar (FQ) phase below T$_0$=10 K. The tetragonal CF potential splits the Yb$^{3+}$ $^2F_{7/2}$ ground multiplet into two $Γ_6$ and two $Γ_7$ Kramers doublets. We establish the following CF level scheme of the ground multiplet: a $Γ_6$ ground state, with the two $Γ_7$ states at 2 cm$^{-1}$, 95 cm$^{-1}$ and the other $Γ_6$ state at 239 cm$^{-1}$. The $\sim$2 cm$^{-1}$ separation between the CF ground and fir…
Notable non-Fermi liquid and quantum critical behaviors are observed in rare-earth metallic systems with non-Kramers local moments supporting a number of different multipolar moments. A prominent example is $\text{Pr(Ti,V)}_{2}\text{Al}_{20}$, where the non-Kramers doublet of the $\text{Pr}^{3+}$ ion allows quadrupolar and octupolar moments, but lacks a dipolar moment. Previous theoretical studies show that a single impurity Kondo problem with such an unusual local moment leads to novel non-Fermi liquid states. In this work, we investigate possible quantum critical behaviors arising from the c…
Ultrasonic investigations of the single-site quadrupolar Kondo effect in diluted Pr system Y$_{0.966}$Pr$_{0.034}$Ir$_2$Zn$_{20}$ are reported. The elastic constant $(C_{11}-C_{12})/2$ is measured down to ~40 mK using ultrasound for the dilute system Y$_{0.966}$Pr$_{0.034}$Ir$_2$Zn$_{20}$ and the pure compound YIr$_2$Zn$_{20}$. We found that the elastic constant $(C_{11}-C_{12})/2$ of the Pr-dilute system exhibits a logarithmic temperature dependence below $T_0$ ~0.3 K, where non-Fermi-liquid (NFL) behavior in the specific heat and electrical resistivity is observed. This logarithmic temperatu…
Topological heavy-fermion systems in three dimensions are usually classified as topological insulators or semimetals. Here, we theoretically predict a different type of heavy-fermion system (dubbed exceptional heavy-fermion semimetal) by studying a three-dimensional periodic Anderson model consisting of strongly correlated localized $f$ electrons and itinerant conduction $c$ electrons in a zincblende lattice. Due to the breaking of inversion symmetry, the quasiparticle lifetimes at different sublattices are distinct, leading to the emergence of Weyl exceptional rings in the complex pole of the…
We propose an exactly solvable model for $j_{\text{eff}}=\frac32$ local moments on the honeycomb lattice. Our construction is guided by a symmetry analysis and by the requirement of an exact solution in terms of a Majorana fermion representation for multipole operators. The main interaction in the model can be interpreted as a bond-dependent quadrupole-quadrupole interaction. When time reversal symmetry is explicitly broken, we obtain a gapped spin liquid with a single chiral Majorana edge mode. We also investigate another solvable model in which the time-reversal-invariant spin liquid is coup…
We report $^{115}$In nuclear quadrupolar resonance (NQR) measurements on the heavy-fermion superconductor PuCoIn$_5$, in the temperature range $0.29{\rm K}\leq T\leq 75{\rm K}$. The NQR parameters for the two crystallographically inequivalent In sites are determined, and their temperature dependence is investigated. A linear shift of the quadrupolar frequency with lowering temperature below the critical value $T_c$ is revealed, in agreement with the prediction for composite pairing. The nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate $T_1^{-1}(T)$ clearly signals a superconducting (SC) phase transition a…
Non-hermitian quantum systems can exhibit spectral degeneracies known as exceptional points, where two or more eigenvectors coalesce, leading to a non-diagonalizable Jordan block. It is known that symmetries can enhance the abundance of exceptional points in non-interacting systems. Here, we investigate the fate of such symmetry protected exceptional points in the presence of a symmetry preserving interaction between fermions and find that, (i) exceptional points are stable in the presence of the interaction. Their propagation through the parameter space leads to the formation of characteristi…
When the ground state of a localized ion is a non-Kramers doublet, such localized ions may carry multipolar moments. For example, Pr$^{3+}$ ions in a cubic environment would possess quadrupolar and octupolar, but no magnetic dipole, moments. When such multipolar moments are placed in a metallic host, unusual interactions between these local moments and conduction electrons arise, in contrast to the familiar magnetic dipole interactions in the classic Kondo problem. In this work, we consider the interaction between a single quadrupolar-octupolar local moment and conduction electrons with $p$-or…
Using the numerical renormalization group method, we investigate an extended Anderson model, in which correlated electrons with the $Γ_1$(singlet)-$\Gamma4$(triplet) f$^2$ crystalline-electric-field (CEF) configuration hybridize with conduction electrons of $Γ_7$(doublet) and $Γ_8$ (quartet) under cubic $O_h$ symmetry, from a strong spin-orbit interaction limit. For the case of the parameters relevant to PrFe4P12, the system is under competition between the CEF singlet fixed point and the multichannel Kondo non-Fermi liquid fixed point arising from the quadrupolar coupling between the impurity…
We analyze a diamond-lattice Hubbard model with the spatially modulated Hubbard interaction. Our dynamical mean-field analysis with special emphasis on non-Hermitian properties elucidates that the gapless nodal line changes into symmetry-protected exceptional torus (SPET) at the Fermi level enclosing the three-dimensional open Fermi surface, which is unique to non-Hermitian physics with chiral symmetry. Furthermore, we also elucidate the effects of the SPETs on the magnetic response; our results based on the random-phase approximation combined with the the dynamical mean-field theory shows tha…
Discovery of novel spin-orbital entangled quantum ground states paves an important avenue for controllable quantum materials via unique couplings to the lattice and other external perturbations. In this work, motivated by recent experiments on cubic heavy fermion materials with multipolar local moments, we theoretically investigate strongly-interacting spin-orbital entangled quantum ground states in multipolar quantum impurity systems. Here itinerant electrons are interacting with the local moments carrying quadrupolar and octupolar moments, in contrast to the conventional Kondo problem with d…
Among heavy fermion materials, there is a set of rare-earth intermetallics with non-Kramers Pr$^{3+}$ $4f^2$ moments which exhibit a rich phase diagram with intertwined quadrupolar orders, superconductivity, and non-Fermi liquid behavior. However, more subtle broken symmetries such as multipolar orders in these Kondo materials remain poorly studied. Here, we argue that multi-spin interactions between local moments beyond the conventional two-spin exchange must play an important role in Kondo materials near the ordered to heavy Fermi liquid transition. We show that this drives a plethora of pha…
Cubic Pr-based compounds with $Γ_3$ non-Kramers doublet ground states can realize a novel heavy Fermi liquid with spinorial hybridization ('hastatic' order) that breaks time reversal symmetry. Several Pr-"1-2-20" materials exhibit a suggestive heavy Fermi liquid stabilized in intermediate magnetic fields; these provide key insight into the quadrupolar Kondo lattice. We develop a simple, yet realistic microscopic model of ferrohastatic order, and elaborate its experimental signatures and behavior in field, where it is a good candidate to explain the observed heavy Fermi liquids at intermediate …
We study the emergence of non-Hermitian band topology in a two-dimensional metal with planar spiral magnetism due to a momentum-dependent relaxation rate. A sufficiently strong momentum dependence of the relaxation rate leads to exceptional points in the Brillouin zone, where the Hamiltonian is nondiagonalizable. The exceptional points appear in pairs with opposite topological charges and are connected by arc-shaped branch cuts. We show that exceptional points inside hole and electron pockets, which are generally present in a spiral magnetic state with a small magnetic gap, can cause a drastic…
We investigate a quantum quench from a critical to an exceptional point. The initial state, prepared in the ground state of a critical hermitian system, is time evolved with a non-hermitian SSH model, tuned to its exceptional point. The single particle density matrix exhibits supersonic modes and multiple light cones, characteristic to non-hermitian time evolution. These propagate with integer multiples of the original Fermi velocity. In the long time limit, the fermionic Green's function decays spatially as $1/x^2$, in sharp contrast to the usual $1/x$ decay of non-interacting fermions. The e…
We study the impact of nonhermiticity due to strong correlations in f-electron materials. One of the most remarkable phenomena occurring in nonhermitian systems is the emergence of exceptional points at which the effective nonhermitian Hamiltonian becomes non-diagonalizable. We here demonstrate that Kondo temperature is related to the temperature at which exceptional points appear around the Fermi level. For this purpose, we study the periodic Anderson model with local and nonlocal hybridization in the insulating and metallic regimes. By analyzing the effective nonhermitian Hamiltonian, which …
We examine the nature of phase transitions occurring in strongly correlated Fermi systems at the quantum critical point (QCP) associated with a divergent effective mass. Conventional scenarios for the QCP involving collective degrees of freedom are shown to have serious shortcomings. Working within the original Landau quasiparticle picture, we propose an alternative topological scenario for the QCP, in systems that obey standard Fermi liquid (FL) theory in advance of the QCP. Applying the technique of Poincaré mapping, we analyze the sequence of iterative maps generated by the Landau equation …
Non-Hermitian phenomena offer a novel approach to analyze and interpret spectra in the presence of interactions. Using the density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG), we demonstrate the existence of exceptional points for the one-particle Green's function of the 1D alternating Hubbard chain with chiral symmetry, with a corresponding Fermi arc at zero frequency in the spectrum. They result from the non-Hermiticity of the effective Hamiltonian describing the Green's function and only appear at finite temperature. They are robust and can be topologically characterized by the zeroth Chern number.…
We consider an isotropic Fermi liquid in two dimensions near the n=2 Pomeranchuk instability in the charge channel. The order parameter is a quadrupolar stress tensor with two polarizations, longitudinal and transverse to the quadrupolar momentum tensor. Longitudinal and transverse bosonic modes are characterized by dynamical exponents z_parallel=3 and z_perp=2, respectively. Previous studies have found that such a system exhibits multiscale quantum criticality with two different energy scales omega ~ xi^{-z_{parallel,perp}}, where xi is the correlation length. We study the impact of the multi…
Certain real parameters of a Hamiltonian, when continued to complex values, can give rise to singular points called exceptional points ($EP$'s), where two or more eigenvalues coincide and the complexified Hamiltonian becomes non-diagonalizable. We show that for a generic $d$-dimensional topological superconductor / superfluid with a chiral symmetry, one can find $EP$'s associated with the chiral zero energy Majorana fermions bound to a topological defect / edge. Exploiting the chiral symmetry, we propose a formula for counting the number ($n$) of such chiral zero modes. We also establish the c…
We establish the appearance of a qualitatively new type of spin liquid with emergent exceptional points when coupling to the environment. We consider an open system of the Kitaev honeycomb model generically coupled to an external environment. In extended parameter regimes, the Dirac points of the emergent Majorana fermions from the original model are split into exceptional points with Fermi arcs connecting them. In glaring contrast to the original gapless phase of the honeycomb model which requires time-reversal symmetry, this new phase is stable against all perturbations. The system also disp…
Non-Hermtian (NH) Hamiltonians effectively describing the physics of dissipative systems have become an important tool with applications ranging from classical meta-materials to quantum many-body systems. Exceptional points, the NH counterpart of spectral degeneracies, are among the paramount phenomena unique to the NH realm. While realizations of second-order exceptional points have been reported in a variety of microscopic models, higher-order ones have largely remained elusive in the many-body context, as they in general require fine tuning in high-dimensional parameter spaces. Here, we pro…
We study non-Hermitian higher-order Weyl semimetals (NHHOWSMs) possessing real spectra and having inversion $\mathcal{I}$ ($\mathcal{I}$-NHHOWSM) or time-reversal symmetry $\mathcal{T}$ ($\mathcal{T}$-NHHOWSM). When the reality of bulk spectra is lost, the NHHOWSMs exhibit various configurations of surface Fermi Arcs (FAs) and Exceptional Fermi Rings (EFRs), providing a setup to investigate them on an equal footing. The EFRs only appear in the region between 2nd-order WNs. We also discover Weyl nodes originating from non-Hermicity, called non-Hermitian Weyl nodes (NHWNs). Remarkably, we find T…
Orbital degrees of freedom in condensed matters could play important roles in forming a variety of exotic electronic states by interacting with conduction electrons. In 4f electron systems, because of strong intra-atomic spin-orbit coupling, an orbitally degenerate state inherently carries quadrupolar degrees of freedom. The present work has focussed on a purely quadrupole-active system PrIr2Zn20 showing superconductivity in the presence of an antiferroquadrupole order at TQ = 0.11 K. We observed non-Fermi liquid (NFL) behaviors emerging in the electrical resistivity and the 4f contribution to…
