We examine the nature of phase transitions occurring in strongly correlated Fermi systems at the quantum critical point (QCP) associated with a divergent effective mass. Conventional scenarios for the QCP involving collective degrees of freedom are shown to have serious shortcomings. Working within the original Landau quasiparticle picture, we propose an alternative topological scenario for the QCP, in systems that obey standard Fermi liquid (FL) theory in advance of the QCP. Applying the technique of Poincaré mapping, we analyze the sequence of iterative maps generated by the Landau equation for the single-particle spectrum at zero temperature. It is demonstrated that the Fermi surface is subject to rearrangement beyond the QCP. If the sequence of maps converges, a multi-connected Fermi surface is formed. If it fails to converge, the Fermi surface swells into a volume that provides a measure of entropy associated with formation of an exceptional state of the system characterized by partial occupation of single-particle states and dispersion of their spectrum proportional to temperature. Based on this dual scenario, the thermodynamics of Fermi systems beyond the QCP exhibits striking departures from the predictions of standard FL theory. Mechanisms for the release of the entropy excess of the exceptional state are discussed.
Wilson-loop has been widely used to characterize the topological property of topological insulators, high order topological insulators and topological semimetals. Both bulk topological invariants and nontrivial boundary properties can be deduced from the topology of Wilson-loop spectrum. However, no attempt has been made to observe it. In this letter we demonstrate the topology of Wilson-loop spectrum can be observed by using the existing technology for observing surface-state Fermi arc. We predict that the surface-state Fermi arc sweeps the whole surface Brillouin zone in a continuous periodi…
Temperature- and field-dependent measurements of the Hall effect of pure and 4 % Rh-doped URu$_{2}$Si$_{2}$ reveal low density (0.03 hole/U) high mobility carriers to be unique to the `hidden order' phase and consistent with an itinerant density-wave order parameter. The Fermi surface undergoes a series of abrupt changes as the magnetic field is increased. When combined with existing de Haas-van Alphen data, the Hall data expose a strong interplay between the stability of the `hidden order,' the degree of polarization of the Fermi liquid and the Fermi surface topology.
The underlying Fermi surface is a key concept for strongly-interacting electron models and has been introduced to generalize the usual notion of the Fermi surface to generic (superconducting or insulating) systems. By using improved correlated wave functions that contain backflow and Jastrow terms, we examine the two-dimensional $t{-}t^\prime$ Hubbard model and find a non-trivial renormalization of the topology of the underlying Fermi surface close to the Mott insulator. Moreover, we observe a sharp crossover region, which arises from the metal-insulator transition, from a weakly interacting m…
The electronic structure of Na$_x$CoO$_2$ revealed by recent photoemission experiments shows important deviations from band theory predictions. The six small Fermi surface pockets predicted by LDA calculations have not been observed as the associated $e_g^\prime$ band fails to cross the Fermi level for a wide range of sodium doping concentration $x$. In addition, significant bandwidth renormalizations of the $t_{2g}$ complex have been observed. We show that these discrepancies are due to strong electronic correlations by studying the multi-orbital Hubbard model in the Hartree-Fock and strong-c…
One of the distinctive features of hole-doped cuprate superconductors is the onset of a `pseudogap' below a temperature $T^*$. Recent experiments suggest that there may be a connection between the existence of the pseudogap and the topology of the Fermi surface. Here, we address this issue by studying the two-dimensional Hubbard model with two distinct numerical methods. We find that the pseudogap only exists when the Fermi surface is hole-like and that, for a broad range of parameters, its opening is concomitant with a Fermi surface topology change from electron- to hole-like. We identify a c…
Ce$_{2}$PtIn$_{8}$ is a recently discovered heavy-fermion system structurally related to the well-studied superconductor CeCoIn$_{5}$. Here, we report on low-temperature de Haas-van Alphen-effect measurements in high magnetic fields in Ce$_{2}$PtIn$_{8}$ and Pr$_{2}$PtIn$_{8}$. In addition, we performed band-structure calculations for localized and itinerant Ce-$4f$ electrons in Ce$_{2}$PtIn$_{8}$. Comparison with the experimental data of Ce$_{2}$PtIn$_{8}$ and of the $4f$-localized Pr$_{2}$PtIn$_{8}$ suggests the itinerant character of the Ce-$4f$ electrons. This conclusion is further support…
We report ARPES results of the Fermi surface of Ca_{1.5}Sr_{0.5}RuO$_{4}, which is at the boundary of magnetic/orbital instability in the phase diagram of the Ca-substituted Sr ruthenates. Three t_{2g} energy bands and the corresponding Fermi surface sheets are observed, which are also present in the Ca-free Sr_{2}RuO$_{4}. We find that while the Fermi surface topology of the alpha, beta (d_{yz, zx}) sheets remains almost the same in these two materials, the gamma (d_{xy}) sheet exhibits a hole-like Fermi surface in Ca_{1.5}Sr_{0.5}RuO_{4} in contrast to being electron-like in Sr_{2}RuO_{4}. O…
The antiferromagnetic correlation plays an important role in high-T$_{c}$ superconductors. Considering this effect, the magnetic excitations in n-type cuprates near the optimal doping are studied within the spin density wave description. The magnetic excitations are commensurate in the low energy regime and further develop into spin wave-like dispersion at higher energy, well consistent with the inelastic neutron scattering measurements. We clearly demonstrate that the commensurability originates from the band splitting and Fermi surface topology. The commensurability is a normal state propert…
The theory of topological insulators and superconductors has mostly focused on non-interacting and gapped systems. This review article discusses topological phases that are either gapless or interacting. We discuss recent progress in identifying gapless systems with stable topological properties (such as novel surface states), using Weyl semimetals as an illustration. We then review recent progress in describing topological phases of interacting gapped systems. We explain how new types of edge states can be stabilized by interactions and symmetry, even though the bulk has only conventional exc…
We performed low-temperature de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) effect measurements on a Ce$_{1-x}$Nd$_x$CoIn$_5$ series, for x = 0.02, 0.05, 0.1, and 1, down to T = 40 mK using torque magnetometry in magnetic felds up to 35 T. Our results indicate that a Fermi-surface (FS) reconstruction occurs from a quasi-two-dimensional (2D) topology for Nd-2% to a rather three-dimensional (3D) for Nd-5%, thus reducing the possibility of perfect FS nesting. The FS evolves further with increasing Nd content with no observed divergence of the effective mass between Nd-2% and 10%, consistent with the crossing of a spi…
We perform charge self-consistent LDA+DMFT (density functional theory combined with dynamical mean field theory) calculations to study correlation effects on the Fermi surfaces of the iron pnictide superconductors LaFePO and LiFeP. We find a distinctive change in the topology of the Fermi surface in both compounds where a hole pocket with Fe dz^2 orbital character changes its geometry from a closed shape in LDA to an open shape upon inclusion of correlations.
We present high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy studies of trivalent CeB6 and divalent BaB6 rare-earth hexaborides. We find that the Fermi surface electronic structure of CeB6 consists of large oval-shape pockets around the X points of the Brillouin zone, while the states around the zone centre 'Gamma' point are strongly renormalized. Our first-principles calculations agree with data around the X points, but not at the 'Gamma' points, indicating areas of strong renormalization located around 'Gamma'. The Ce quasi-particle states participate in formation of hotspots at the …
We study in this paper the general properties of a many body system of fermions in arbitrary dimensions assuming that the {\em momentum} of individual fermions are good quantum numbers of the system. We call these systems $k$-Fermi liquids. We show how Fermi liquid, Luttinger liquid (or Fermi liquid with exclusion statistics) and spin-charge separation arises from this framework. Two exactly solvable $k$-Fermi liquid models with spin-charge separation are discussed as examples.
Stoichiometric SnTe is theoretically a small gap semiconductor that undergoes a ferroelectric distortion on cooling. In reality however, crystals are always non-stoichiometric and metallic; the ferroelectric transition is therefore more accurately described as a polar structural transition. Here we study the Fermi surface using quantum oscillations as a function of pressure. We find the oscillation spectrum changes at high pressure, due to the suppression of the polar transition and less than 10 kbar is sufficient to stabilize the undistorted cubic lattice. This is accompanied by a large decre…
A study of the Fermi surface of the putative topological semimetal Pd$_3$Pb has been carried out using Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) oscillations measured in fields of up to 60 T. Pd$_3$Pb has garnered attention in the community due to a peculiar Fermi surface that has been proposed theoretically by Ahn, Pickett, and Lee, [Phys. Rev. B 98, 035130 (2018)] to host a dispersion-less band along $X-Γ$ as well as multiple triply-degenerate band crossings that, under the influence of spin-orbit coupling, lead to ten four-fold degenerate Dirac points. Analysis of the SdH oscillation data verifies the calcul…
We study the emergence of non-Hermitian band topology in a two-dimensional metal with planar spiral magnetism due to a momentum-dependent relaxation rate. A sufficiently strong momentum dependence of the relaxation rate leads to exceptional points in the Brillouin zone, where the Hamiltonian is nondiagonalizable. The exceptional points appear in pairs with opposite topological charges and are connected by arc-shaped branch cuts. We show that exceptional points inside hole and electron pockets, which are generally present in a spiral magnetic state with a small magnetic gap, can cause a drastic…
The electron-electron interactions effects on the shape of the Fermi surface of doped graphene are investigated. The actual discrete nature of the lattice is fully taken into account. A $π$-band tight-binding model, with nearest-neighbor hopping integrals, is considered. We calculate the self-energy corrections at zero temperature. Long and short range Coulomb interactions are included. The exchange self-energy corrections for graphene preserve the trigonal warping of the Fermi surface topology, although rounding the triangular shape. The band velocity is renormalized to higher value. Correcti…
We report magnetotransport measurements of PrSb in high magnetic fields. Our results show that PrSb exhibits extremely large magnetoresistance(XMR) at low temperatures. Meanwhile angle-dependent magnetoresistance measurements were used to probe the Fermi surface via Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) oscillations. The angular dependence of the frequencies of the $α$-branch indicate a two-dimensional character for this Fermi surface sheet, while the effective mass of this branch as a function of angle shows a four-fold signature. The evolution of the Fermi surface with field was also studied up to 32~T. A…
We report transverse and longitudinal magneto-transport properties of NbAs2 single crystals. Attributing to the electron-hole compensation, non-saturating large transverse magnetoresistance reaches up to 8000 at 9 T at 1.8 K with mobility around 1 to 2 m^2V^-1S^-1. We present a thorough study of angular-dependent Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) quantum oscillations of NbAs2. Three distinct oscillation frequencies are identified. First-principles calculations reveal four types of Fermi pockets: electron alpha pocket, hole beta pocket, hole gamma pocket and small electron delta pocket. Although the angu…
High resolution angle-resolved photoemission measurements have been carried out to study the electronic structure and superconducting gap of the (Tl$_{0.58}$Rb$_{0.42}$)Fe$_{1.72}$Se$_2$ superconductor with a T$_c$=32 K. The Fermi surface topology consists of two electron-like Fermi surface sheets around $Γ$ point which is distinct from that in all other iron-based compounds reported so far. The Fermi surface around the M point shows a nearly isotropic superconducting gap of $\sim$12 meV. The large Fermi surface near the $Γ$ point also shows a nearly isotropic superconducting gap of $\sim$15 m…
We present a polarization and topology resolved study of the low energy band structure in optimally doped superconducting Ba0.6K0.4Fe2As2 using angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy. Polarization-contrasted measurements allow us to identify and trace all low energy bands expected in models, revealing unexpected symmetry breaking and a surprisingly intertwined Fermi surface topology of hole-like bands near the Brillouin zone center. Band structure correlations across the Gamma-M spin fluctuation wavevector are compared with the superconducting gap anisotropy which suggest a partial scenario…
We investigate the effect of anti-ferromagnetic (AF) quantum criticality on the magnetic penetration depth $λ(T)$ in line-nodal superconductors, including the cuprates, the iron pnictides, and the heavy-fermion superconductors. The critical magnetic fluctuation renormalizes the current vertex and drastically enhances zero-temperature penetration depth $λ(0)$, which is more remarkable in the iron-pnictide case due to the Fermi-surface topology. Additional temperature ($T$) dependence of the current renormalization makes the expected $T$-linear behavior at low temperatures approaching to $T^{1.5…

Fermi gases and liquids display an excitation spectrum that is simply connected, ensuring closed Fermi surfaces. In strongly correlated systems like the cuprate superconductors, the existence of open sheets of Fermi surface known as Fermi arcs indicates a distinctly different topology of the spectrum with no equivalent in Fermi liquid theory. Here, we demonstrate a generic mechanism by which correlation effects in fermionic systems can change the topology of the spectrum. Using diagrammatic Monte Carlo simulations, we demonstrate the existence of disconnected and multiply connected excitation …
We introduce a simple but powerful zero temperature Stoner model to explain the unusual phase diagram of the ferromagnetic superconductor, UGe2. Triplet superconductivity is driven in the ferromagnetic phase by tuning the majority spin Fermi level through one of two peaks in the paramagnetic density of states (DOS). Each peak is associated with a metamagnetic jump in magnetisation. The twin peak DOS may be derived from a tight-binding, quasi-one-dimensional bandstructure, inspired by previous bandstructure calculations.
We investigate the asymmetry between electron and hole doping in a 2D Mott insulator, and the resulting competition between antiferromagnetism (AF) and d-wave superconductivity (SC), using variational Monte Carlo for projected wave functions. We find that key features of the T = 0 phase diagram, such as critical doping for SC-AF coexistence and the maximum value of the SC order parameter, are determined by a single parameter which characterises the topology of the "Fermi surface" at half filling defined by the bare tight-binding parameters. Our results give insight into why AF wins for electro…
The electronic structure of electron doped iron-arsenide superconductors Ba(Fe1- xCox)2As2 has been measured with Angle Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy. The data reveal a marked photon energy dependence of points in momentum space where the bands cross the Fermi energy, a distinctive and direct signature of three-dimensionality in the Fermi surface topology. By providing a unique example of high temperature superconductivity hosted in layered compounds with three-dimensional electronic structure, these findings suggest that the iron-arsenides are unique materials, quite different from the …
We have carried out first-principles calculations of the Compton scattering spectra to demonstrate that the filling of the hole Fermi surface in LaO$_{1-x}$F$_{x}$FeAs produces a distinct signature in the Fourier transformed Compton spectrum when the momentum transfer vector lies along the [100] direction. We thus show how the critical concentration $x_c$, where hole Fermi surface pieces are filled up and the superconductivity mediated by antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations is expected to be suppressed, can be obtained in a bulk-sensitive manner.
We report a first study of low energy electronic structure and Fermi surface topology for the recently discovered iron-based superconductor Ca10(Pt3As8)(Fe2As2)5 (the 10-3-8 phase, with Tc = 8K), via angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). Despite its triclinic crystal structure, ARPES results reveal a fourfold symmetric band structure with the absence of Dirac-cone-like Fermi dots (related to magnetism) found around the Brillouin zone corners in other iron-based superconductors. Considering that the triclinic lattice and structural supercell arising from the Pt3As8 intermediary lay…
We report the first photoemission study of Fe1+xTe - the host compound of the newly discovered iron-chalcogenide superconductors. Our results reveal a pair of nearly electron- hole compensated Fermi pockets, strong Fermi velocity renormalization and an absence of a spin-density-wave gap. A shadow hole pocket is observed at the "X"-point of the Brillouin zone which is consistent with a long-range ordered magneto-structural groundstate. No signature of Fermi surface nesting instability associated with Q= pi(1/2, 1/2) is observed. Our results collectively reveal that the Fe1+xTe series is dramati…
We report the results of extensive dynamical cluster approximation calculations, based on a quantum Monte Carlo solver, for the two-dimensional Kondo lattice model. Our particular cluster implementation renders possible the simulation of spontaneous antiferromagnetic symmetry breaking. By explicitly computing the single-particle spectral function both in the paramagnetic and antiferromagnetic phases, we follow the evolution of the Fermi surface across this magnetic transition. The results, computed for clusters up to 16 orbitals, show clear evidence for the existence of three distinct Fermi su…
We report the first comprehensive microscopic description of the thermal fluctuations tuned Fermi surface characteristics in a non-centrosymmetric superconductor, in presence of an in-plane Zeeman field. Using a non perturbative approach we demonstrate that short range fluctuating superconducting pair correlations give rise to segmentation of the Fermi surface with direction dependent pair breaking and hotspots for quasiparticle scattering. Further, a fluctuation driven change in the Fermi surface topology is realized, characterized by a shift of the corresponding Dirac point from the trivial …
We present new results from Angle-Resolved Photoemission experiments (ARPES) on overdoped Bi_{2}Sr_{2}CaCu_{2}O_{8+d} (BSCCO) crystals. With greatly improved energy and momentum resolution, we clearly identify the existence of electron-like portions of the Fermi Surface (FS) near \bar{M} at hν=33eV. This is consistent with previously reported data and is robust against various FS crossing criteria. It is not due to an artifact induced from \vec{k}-dependent matrix element effects. We also present evidence for a breakage in the FS pointing to the possible existence of two types of electronic co…
We report electronic Raman scattering measurements of Sr(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ single crystals in their magnetic - Spin Density Wave (SDW) phase. The spectra display multiple, polarization-resolved SDW gaps as expected in a band-folding itinerant picture for a multiband system. The temperature dependence of the SDW gaps reveals an unusual evolution of the reconstructed electronic structure with at least one gap being activated only well below the magnetic SDW transition $T_N$. A comparison with temperature dependent Hall measurements allows us to assign this activated behavior to a chang…
We consider a Stoner ferromagnet in presence of a quasi-one dimensional Fermi surface in its spin majority band. Assuming a twin $δ$-function peaked density of state due to the low dimensionality, we computed the single particle self-energy. There appears an additional divergence in the self-energy and hence in the effective mass inside the ferromagnetic phase (besides the standard logarithmic divergence at the Stoner critical point). Since such an effect is purely due to density of states, it might correspond to a first order phase transition making the ferromagnetic phase into two distinct p…
We report a detailed magnetotransport study on single crystals of PrBi. The presence of $f$-electrons in this material raises the prospect of realizing a strongly correlated version of topological semimetals. PrBi shows a magnetic field induced metal insulator transition below $T \sim 20$ K and a very large magnetoresistance ($\approx 4.4 \times 10^4~$) at low temperatures ($T= 2$ K). We have also probed the Fermi surface topology by de Haas van Alphen (dHvA) and Shubnikov de Haas (SdH) quantum oscillation measurements complimented with density functional theory (DFT) calculations of the band …
We use relativistic ab-initio methods combined with model Hamiltonian approaches to analyze the normal-phase electronic and structural properties of the recently discovered WP superconductor. Remarkably, the outcomes of such study can be employed to set fundamental connections among WP and the CrAs and MnP superconductors belonging to the same space group. One of the key features of the resulting electronic structure is represented by the occurrence of multiple band crossings along specific high symmetry lines of the Brilloiun zone. In particular, we demonstrate that the eight-fold band degene…
We carried out high resolution angle-resolved photoemission measurements on the electronic structure and superconducting gap of K_0.68Fe_1.79Se_2 (T_c=32 K) and (Tl_0.45K_0.34)Fe_1.84Se_2 (T_c=28 K) superconductors. In addition to the electron-like Fermi surface near M(π,π), two electron-like Fermi pockets are revealed around the zone center Γ(0,0) in K0.68Fe1.79Se_2. This observation makes the Fermi surface topology of K_0.68Fe_1.79Se_2 consistent with that of (Tl,Rb)_xFe_{2-y}Se_2 and (Tl,K)_xFe_{2-y}Se_2 compounds. A nearly isotropic superconducting gap (Δ) is observed along the electron-li…
The effective crystal field in multi-orbital correlated materials can be either enhanced or reduced by electronic correlations with crucial consequences for the topology of the Fermi surface and, hence, on the physical properties of these systems. In this respect, recent local density approximation (LDA) plus dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) studies of Ni-based heterostructure have shown contradicting results, depending on whether the less correlated $p$-orbitals are included or not. We investigate the origin of this problem and identify the key parameters controlling the Fermi surface prope…
Since the recent discovery of plutonium-based superconductors such as PuCoIn$_{\rm 5}$, systematic studies of the electronic properties for plutonium compounds are providing insight into the itinerancy-localization crossover of Pu 5$f$ electrons. We are particularly interested in understanding the Fermi surface properties of PuIn$_{3}$ compound, which serves as the building block for the PuCoIn$_{\rm 5}$ superconductor. Motivated by the first observation of quantum oscillation and renewed interest in the de-Hass van-Alphen (dHvA) measurements on PuIn$_{\rm 3}$, we study the Fermi surface (FS) …
The Fermi surface topology of the organic superconductor \lbets has been determined using the Shubnikov-de Haas and magnetic breakdown effects and angle-dependent magnetoresistance oscillations. The former experiments were carried out in pulsed fields of up to 60 T, whereas the latter employed quasistatic fields of up to 30 T. All of these data show that the Fermi-surface topology of \lbets is very similar to that of the most heavily-studied organic superconductor, \cuscn, except in one important respect; the interplane transfer integral in \lbets is a factor $\sim 10$ larger than that in \cus…
In order to clarify superconducting properties of BiS$_2$-based layered superconductors LaO$_{1-x}$F$_x$BiS$_2$, we evaluate the superconducting transition temperature $T_{\rm c}$ and analyze the gap function in a weak-coupling limit on the basis of the two-dimensional two-orbital Hubbard model. It is found that $T_{\rm c}$ becomes maximum at $x=0.6$ in the present calculations. For $x<0.45$, we obtain the $d$-wave gap of which line nodes do not cross the pocket-like Fermi-surface curves with the centers at X and Y points. On the other hand, for $x>0.45$, the extended $s$-wave gap is found for…
Based on recent magnetic-quantum-oscillation, ARPES, neutron-scattering and other data, we propose that superconductivity in the cuprates occurs via a convenient matching of the spatial distribution of incommensurate spin fluctuations to the amplitude and phase of the $d_{x^2-y^2}$ Cooper-pair wavefunction; this establishes a robust causal relationship between the lengthscale of the fluctuations and the superconducting coherence length. It is suggested that the spin fluctuations are driven by the Fermi surface, which is prone to nesting; they couple to the itinerant holes via the on-site Coulo…
We report the first photoemission study of Fe$_{1+x}$Te - the host compound of the newly discovered iron-chalcogenide superconductors (maximum T$_c$ $\sim$ 27K). Our results reveal a pair of nearly electron-hole compensated Fermi pockets, strong Fermi velocity renormalization and an absence of a spin-density-wave gap. A shadow hole pocket is observed at the X-point of the Brillouin zone which is consistent with a long-range ordered magneto-structural groundstate. No signature of Fermi surface nesting instability associated with Q=($π$/2, $π$/2) is observed. Our results collectively reveal that…
Strain control is one of the most promising avenues to search for new emergent phenomena in transition-metal-oxide films. Here, we investigate the strain-induced changes of electronic structures in strongly correlated LaNiO3 (LNO) films, using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and the dynamical mean-field theory. The strongly renormalized eg-orbital bands are systematically rearranged by misfit strain to change its fermiology. As tensile strain increases, the hole pocket centered at the A point elongates along the kz-axis and seems to become open, thus changing Fermi-surface (FS) topol…
The superconducting, transport, and structural properties of optimally electron-doped BaFe$_{1.9}$Ni$_{0.1}$As$_{2}$ are investigated by combining the electrical resistance and synchrotron X-ray diffraction measurements at high pressures. The superconducting transition temperature of this system is found to decrease in a similar way of the axial ratio of $c/a$ with increasing pressure but vanishing at a critical pressure of 7.5 GPa where $c/a$ has a dip and an isostructural transformation from a tetragonal to a collapsed tetragonal phase takes place. The resistance is found to obey a linear te…
The in-plane anisotropy of resistivity has been investigated for Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$TM$_{x}$)$_2$As$_2$ (TM-Ba122, TM$=$Cr, Mn, and Co) where the substitution sites are the same but the doped carriers are different for different TM elements. The Hall coefficient measurements indicated that hole carriers are effectively doped by Cr substitution but not by Mn substitution. It has been found that the resistivity difference $Δρ=ρ_{\rm b}-ρ_{\rm a}$ in the antiferromagnetic-orthorhombic (AFO) phase of Cr-Ba122 is initially positive but it turns to negative with increasing Cr content, whereas the positive…
The semi-metals having electrons near the Fermi level follow the relativistic equation of motion, and show Dirac or Weyl-type behavior. Their orbital resolved electronic bands analysis indicates the non-trivial topological states. Through the first principle methods, the electronic band structure of bulk and thin layers of transition metal dichalcogenides NiTe2 and PdTe2 are calculated and analyzed. Implementation of Hubbard corrections to the band structure indicates zero magnetization, though atoms of Ni are magnetic. Z2 invariant index is calculated for topological classification for both m…
The properties of cuprate high-temperature superconductors are largely shaped by competing phases whose nature is often a mystery. Chiefly among them is the pseudogap phase, which sets in at a doping $p^*$ that is material-dependent. What determines $p^*$ is currently an open question. Here we show that the pseudogap cannot open on an electron-like Fermi surface, and can only exist below the doping $p_{FS}$ at which the large Fermi surface goes from hole-like to electron-like, so that $p^*$ $\leq$ $p_{FS}$. We derive this result from high-magnetic-field transport measurements in La$_{1.6-x}$Nd…
Many quantum condensed matter systems are strongly correlated and strongly interacting fermionic systems, which cannot be treated perturbatively. However, physics which emerges in the low-energy corner does not depend on the complicated details of the system and is relatively simple. It is determined by the nodes in the fermionic spectrum, which are protected by topology in momentum space (in some cases, in combination with the vacuum symmetry). Close to the nodes the behavior of the system becomes universal; and the universality classes are determined by the toplogical invariants in momentum …
We report high-field magnetotransport measurements on β''-(BEDT-TTF)_4[(H_3O)M(C_2O_4)_3]Y, where M=Ga, Cr and Fe and Y=C_5H_5N. We observe similar Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations in all compounds, attributable to four quasi-two-dimensional Fermi-surface pockets, the largest of which corresponds to a cross-sectional area ~8.5\% of the Brillouin zone. The cross-sectional areas of the pockets are in agreement with the expectations for a compensated semimetal, and the corresponding effective masses are ~m_e, rather small compared to those of other BEDT-TTF salts. Apart from the case of the smalles…
While recent advances in band theory and sample growth have expanded the series of extremely large magnetoresistance (XMR) semimetals in transition metal dipnictides $TmPn_2$ ($Tm$ = Ta, Nb; $Pn$ = P, As, Sb), the experimental study on their electronic structure and the origin of XMR is still absent. Here, using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy combined with first-principles calculations and magnetotransport measurements, we performed a comprehensive investigation on MoAs$_2$, which is isostructural to the $TmPn_2$ family and also exhibits quadratic XMR. We resolve a clear band struct…
We study RF-spectroscopy of ultracold Fermi gas by going beyond the linear response in the field-matter interaction. Higher order perturbation theory allows virtual processes and energy conservation beyond the single particle level. We formulate an effective higher order theory which agrees quantitatively with experiments on the pairing gap, and is consistent with the absence of the mean-field shift in the spin-flip experiment.
Many quantum condensed-matter systems, and probably the quantum vacuum of our Universe, are strongly correlated and strongly interacting fermionic systems, which cannot be treated perturbatively. However, physics which emerges in the low-energy does not depend on the complicated details of the system and is relatively simple. It is determined by the nodes in the fermionic spectrum, which are protected by topology in momentum space (in some cases, in combination with the vacuum symmetry). Here we illustrate this universality on some examples of quantum phase transitions, which can occur between…
