Topological heavy-fermion systems in three dimensions are usually classified as topological insulators or semimetals. Here, we theoretically predict a different type of heavy-fermion system (dubbed exceptional heavy-fermion semimetal) by studying a three-dimensional periodic Anderson model consisting of strongly correlated localized $f$ electrons and itinerant conduction $c$ electrons in a zincblende lattice. Due to the breaking of inversion symmetry, the quasiparticle lifetimes at different sublattices are distinct, leading to the emergence of Weyl exceptional rings in the complex pole of the Green's function at finite temperatures; such rings lead to the appearance of bounded Fermi surfaces (bulk Fermi disks). As temperatures rise, two pairs of Weyl exceptional rings merge into two exceptional rings with one bounded bulk Fermi surface (bulk Fermi tube), which are experimentally measurable by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. Finally, we use the dynamical mean field theory to calculate the spectral functions which illustrate the emergence of bulk Fermi tubes. Our work thus opens the door for studying exceptional heavy-fermion semimetal phases in three dimensions.
We consider a 3-dimensional (3D) non-Hermitian exceptional line semimetal model and take open boundary conditions in x, y, and z directions separately. In each case, we calculate the parameter regions where the bulk-boundary correspondence is broken. The breakdown of the bulk-boundary correspondence is manifested by the deviation from unit circles of generalized Brillouin zones (GBZ) and the discrepancy between spectra calculated with open boundary conditions (OBC) and periodic boundary conditions (PBC). The consistency between OBC and PBC spectra can be recovered if the PBC spectra are calcul…
We report on the dynamical formation of exceptional degeneracies in basic correlation functions of non-integrable one- and two-dimensional systems quenched to the vicinity of a critical point. Remarkably, fine-tuned semi-metallic points in the phase diagram of the considered systems are thereby promoted to topologically robust non-Hermitian (NH) nodal phases emerging in the coherent long-time evolution of a dynamically equilibrating system. In the framework of non-equilibrium Green's function methods within the conserving second Born approximation, we predict observable signatures of these nov…
Fermion-induced quantum critical points (FIQCPs) were recently discovered at the putatively first-order transitions between two-dimensional (2D) Dirac semimetals and the Kekule valence bond solids on the honeycomb lattice by sign-free quantum Monte Carlo simulations [Nature Communications 8, 314, (2017)]. Here, we investigate possible FIQCP in 3D topological Weyl semimetals at a $Z_3$ symmetry-breaking transition that is putatively first-order according to the Landau criterion. We construct a lattice model featuring 3D double-Weyl fermions (monopole charges $\pm$2) and we show that $Z_3$ nodal…
We study magneto-transport properties in single crystals of TaSb_2, which is a recently discovered topological semimetal. In the presence of magnetic field, the electrical resistivity shows onset of insulating behaviour followed by plateau at low temperature. Such resistivity plateau is generally assigned to topological surface states. TaSb2 exhibits extremely high magneto-resistance with non-saturating field dependence. We find that aspects of extremely large magneto resistance and resistivity plateau are well accounted by classical Kohler scaling. Unambiguous evidence for anomalous Chiral tr…
In this paper we investigate the nature of quantum phase transitions between two-dimensional Dirac semimetals and $Z_3$-ordered phases (e.g. Kekule valence-bond solid), where cubic terms of the order parameter are allowed in the quantum Landau-Ginzberg theory and the transitions are putatively first-order. From large-$N$ renormalization group (RG) analysis, we find that fermion-induced quantum critical points (FIQCPs) [Z.-X. Li et al., Nature Communications 8, 314 (2017)] occur when $N$ (the number of flavors of four-component Dirac fermions) is larger than a critical value $N_c$. Remarkably, …
Weyl fermions, which are fermions with definite chiralities, can give rise to anomalous breaking of the symmetry of the physical system which they are a part of. In their (3+1)-dimensional realizations in condensed matter systems, i.e., the so-called Weyl semimetals, this anomaly gives rise to topological electromagnetic response of magnetic fluctuations, which takes the form of non-local interaction between magnetic fluctuations and electromagnetic fields. We study the physical consequences of this non-local interaction, including electric field assisted magnetization dynamics, an extra gaple…
We study non-Hermitian higher-order Weyl semimetals (NHHOWSMs) possessing real spectra and having inversion $\mathcal{I}$ ($\mathcal{I}$-NHHOWSM) or time-reversal symmetry $\mathcal{T}$ ($\mathcal{T}$-NHHOWSM). When the reality of bulk spectra is lost, the NHHOWSMs exhibit various configurations of surface Fermi Arcs (FAs) and Exceptional Fermi Rings (EFRs), providing a setup to investigate them on an equal footing. The EFRs only appear in the region between 2nd-order WNs. We also discover Weyl nodes originating from non-Hermicity, called non-Hermitian Weyl nodes (NHWNs). Remarkably, we find T…
We study the fate of double-Weyl fermions in three-dimensional systems in the presence of long-range Coulomb interactions. By employing the momentum-shell renormalization group approach, we find that the fixed point of noninteracting double-Weyl fermions is unstable against Coulomb interactions and flows to a nontrivial stable fixed point with anisotropic screening effect. Moreover, experimentally measurable quantities such as specific heat obtain unusual logarithmic corrections. We also discuss implications of our results to three-dimensional materials HgCr2Se4 and SrSi2, candidate materials …
Using a combination of analytical arguments and state-of-the-art diagrammatic Monte Carlo simulations we show that the corrections to the dispersion in interacting Weyl semimetals are determined by the ultraviolet cutoff and the inverse screening length. If both of these are finite, then the diagrammatic series is convergent even in the low-temperature limit, which implies that the semimetallic phase remains stable. Meanwhile, the absence of a UV cutoff or screening results in logarithmic divergences at zero temperature. These results highlight the crucial impact of Coulomb interactions and sc…
A sufficiently strong long-range Coulomb interaction can induce excitonic pairing in gapless Dirac semimetals, which generates a finite gap and drives semimetal-insulator quantum phase transition. This phenomenon is in close analogy to dynamical chiral symmetry breaking in high energy physics. In most realistic Dirac semimetals, including suspended graphene, Coulomb interaction is too weak to open an excitonic gap. The Coulomb interaction plays a more important role at low energies in a two-dimensional semi-Dirac semimetal, in which the fermion spectrum is linear in one component of momenta an…
We discuss the modified quantum electrodynamics from a time-reversal-breaking Weyl semimetal coupled with a $U(1)$ gauge (electromagnetic) field. A key role is played by the soft dispersion of the photons in a particular direction, say $\hat{z}$, due to the Hall conductivity of the Weyl semimetal. Due to the soft photon, the fermion velocity in $\hat{z}$ is logarithmically reduced under renormalization group flow, together with the fine structure constant. Meanwhile, fermions acquire a finite lifetime from spontaneous emission of the soft photon, namely the Cherenkov radiation. At low energy $…
We present a non-perturbative study of the quantum many-body effects caused by the long-range Coulomb interaction in a two-dimensional semi-Dirac semimetal. This kind of semimetal may be realized in deformed graphene and a class of other realistic materials. In the non-interacting limit, the dispersion of semi-Dirac fermion is linear in one direction and quadratic in the other direction. When the impact of Coulomb interaction is taken into account, such a dispersion can be significantly modified. To reveal the correlation effects, we first obtain the exact self-consistent Dyson-Schwinger equat…
Weyl fermions play a major role in quantum field theory but have been quite elusive as fundamental particles. Materials based on quasi two-dimensional bismuth layers were recently designed and provide an arena for the study of the interplay between anisotropic Dirac fermions, magnetism and structural changes, allowing the formation of Weyl fermions in condensed matter. Here, we perform an optical investigation of YbMnBi$_2$, a representative type II Weyl semimetal, and contrast its excitation spectrum with the optical response of the more conventional semimetal EuMnBi$_2$. Our comparative stud…
Weyl semimetal with Weyl fermions at Fermi energy is one of the topological materials, and is a condensed-matter realization of the relativistic fermions. However, there are several crucial differences such as the shift of Fermi energy, which can hinder the expected interesting physics. Chiral anomaly is a representative nontrivial phenomenon associated with Weyl fermions, which dictates the transfer of fermions between the Weyl fermions with opposite chirality; it is manifested as the negative magnetoresistance. Here we demonstrate that the magnetoresistance is robust against the deviation fr…
We attentively investigate the effects of short-range fermion-fermion interactions on the low-energy properties of both two-dimensional type-I and type-II tilted Dirac semimetals by means of the renormalization group framework. Practicing the standard renormalization group procedures via taking into account all one-loop corrections gives rise to the coupled energy-dependent evolutions of all interaction parameters, which are adopted to carefully examine whether and how the fermion-fermion interactions influence the low-energy physical behaviors of tilted Dirac fermions. After carrying out the …
According to Landau criterion, a phase transition should be first order when cubic terms of order parameters are allowed in its effective Ginzburg-Landau free energy. Recently, it was shown by renormalization group (RG) analysis that continuous transition can happen at putatively first-order $Z_3$ transitions in 2D Dirac semimetals and such non-Landau phase transitions were dubbed "fermion-induced quantum critical points" (FIQCP) [Li et al., Nature Communications 8, 314 (2017)]. The RG analysis, controlled by the 1/$N$ expansion with $N$ the number of flavors of four-component Dirac fermions, …
Insulating states can be topologically nontrivial, a well-established notion that is exemplified by the quantum Hall effect and topological insulators. By contrast, topological metals have not been experimentally evidenced until recently. In systems with strong correlations, they have yet to be identified. Heavy fermion semimetals are a prototype of strongly correlated systems and, given their strong spin-orbit coupling, present a natural setting to make progress. Here we advance a Weyl-Kondo semimetal phase in a periodic Anderson model on a noncentrosymmetric lattice. The quasiparticles near …
The manifestation of Weyl fermions in strongly correlated electron systems is of particular interest. We report evidence for Weyl fermions in the heavy fermion semimetal YbPtBi from electronic structure calculations, angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, magnetotransport and calorimetric measurements. At elevated temperatures where $4f$-electrons are localized, there are triply degenerate points, yielding Weyl nodes in applied magnetic fields. These are revealed by a contribution from the chiral anomaly in the magnetotransport, which at low temperatures becomes negligible due to the influ…
Cooper instability associated with superconductivity in the two-dimensional semi-Dirac semimetals is attentively studied in the presence of attractive Cooper-pairing interaction, which is the projection of an attractive fermion-fermion interaction. Performing the standard renormalization group analysis shows that the Cooper theorem is violated at zero chemical potential but instead Cooper instability can be generated only if the absolute strength of fermion-fermion coupling exceeds certain critical value and transfer momentum is restricted to a confined region, which is determined by the initi…
TaAs as one of the experimentally discovered topological Weyl semimetal has attracted intense interests recently. The ambient TaAs has two types of Weyl nodes which are not on the same energy level. As an effective way to tune lattice parameters and electronic interactions, high pressure is becoming a significant tool to explore new materials as well as their exotic states. Therefore, it is highly interesting to investigate the behaviors of topological Weyl fermions and possible structural phase transitions in TaAs under pressure. Here, with a combination of ab initio calculations and crystal …
The fluctuations-driven continuous quantum criticality has sparked tremendous interest in condensed matter physics. It has been verified that the gapless fermions fluctuations can change the nature of phase transition at criticality. In this paper, we study the fermionic quantum criticality with enlarged Ising$\times$Ising fluctuations in honeycomb lattice materials. The Gross-Neveu-Yukawa theory for the multicriticality between the semimetallic phase and two ordered phases that break Ising symmetry is investigated by employing perturbative renormalization group approach. We first determine th…
We consider the fermionic quantum criticality of anisotropic nodal point semimetals in $d = d_L + d_Q$ spatial dimensions that disperse linearly in $d_L$ dimensions, and quadratically in the remaining $d_Q$ dimensions. When subject to strong interactions, these systems are susceptible to semimetal-insulator transitions concurrent with spontaneous symmetry breaking. Such quantum critical points are described by effective field theories of anisotropic nodal fermions coupled to dynamical order parameter fields. We analyze the universal scaling in the physically relevant spatial dimensions, genera…
We report the optical conductivity in high-quality crystals of the chiral topological semimetal CoSi, which hosts exotic quasiparticles known as multifold fermions. We find that the optical response is separated into several distinct regions as a function of frequency, each dominated by different types of quasiparticles. The low-frequency intraband response is captured by a narrow Drude peak from a high-mobility electron pocket of double Weyl quasi-particles, and the temperature dependence of the spectral weight is consistent with its Fermi velocity. By subtracting the low-frequency sharp Drud…
We study the effects of short-range interactions on a generalized three-dimensional Weyl semimetal, where the band touching points act as the (anti)monopoles of Abelian Berry curvature of strength $n$. We show that any local interaction has a \emph{negative} scaling dimension $-2/n$. Consequently all Weyl semimetals are stable against weak short-range interactions. For sufficiently strong interactions, we demonstrate that the Weyl semimetal either undergoes a first order transition into a band insulator or a continuous transition into a symmetry breaking phase. A translational symmetry breakin…
Heavy fermion semimetals represent a promising setting to explore topological metals driven by strong correlations. In this paper, we i) summarize the theoretical results in a Weyl-Kondo semimetal phase for a strongly correlated model with inversion-symmetry-breaking and time-reversal invariance, and the concurrent work that has experimentally discovered this phase in the non-magnetic non-centrosymmetric heavy fermion system Ce$_3$Bi$_4$Pd$_3$; and ii) describe what is expected theoretically when the time-reversal symmetry is also broken.
The subject of topological materials has attracted immense attention in condensed-matter physics, because they host new quantum states of matter containing Dirac, Majorana, or Weyl fermions. Although Majorana fermions can only exist on the surface of topological superconductors, Dirac and Weyl fermions can be realized in both 2D and 3D materials. The latter are semimetals with Dirac/Weyl cones either not tilted (type I) or tilted (type II). Although both Dirac and Weyl fermions have massless nature with the nontrivial Berry phase, the formation of Weyl fermions in 3D semimetals require either …
Fermi liquid theory works very well in most normal metals, but is found violated in many strongly correlated electron systems, such as cuprate and heavy-fermion superconductors. A widely accepted criterion is that, the Fermi liquid theory is valid when the interaction-induced fermion damping rate approaches zero more rapidly than the energy. Otherwise, it is invalid. Here, we demonstrate that this criterion breaks down in topological double-and triple-Weyl semimetals. Renormalization group analysis reveals that, although the damping rate of double- and triple-Weyl fermions induced by the Coulo…
We study the electromagnetic properties of Weyl semimetals with strong interactions. Focusing on a single Weyl cone in the band structure, we induce strong interactions by coupling the Weyl fermion with a tunable coupling constant $g_f$ to a quantum critical system. The critical fluctuations are described by a conformal field theory containing fermionic operators with scaling dimension $Δ$. Employing the methods of the holographic correspondence, we then derive the effective theory of the Weyl fermion in the presence of external electric and magnetic fields. In particular, we determine the fre…
Known Majorana fermions models are considered as promising ones for the purposes of quantum computing robust to decoherence. One of the most expecting but unachieved goals is an effective control for braiding of Majoranas. Another one is to describe ${\mathbb{Z}}_2$ topological semimetals, APRES spectra of which testify on eight-fold degenerate chiral fermions with $SU(2)$ holonomy of wave functions, whereas the last can not be reproduced within existing models. Quasi-relativistic theory of non-abelian quantum charge transport in topological semimetals is developed for a model with a number of…
The noncentrosymmetric RAlPn (R = rare earth, Pn = Si, Ge) family, predicted to host nonmagnetic and magnetic Weyl states, provide an excellent platform for investigating the relation between magnetism and Weyl physics. By using high field magnetotransport measurements and first principles calculations, we have unveiled herein both type-I and type-II Weyl states in the nonmagnetic LaAlSi. By a careful comparison between experimental results and theoretical calculations, nontrivial Berry phases associated with the Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations are ascribed to the electron Fermi pockets related…
The band topology of magnetic semimetals is of interest both from the fundamental science point of view and with respect to potential spintronics and memory applications. Unfortunately, only a handful of suitable topological semimetals with magnetic order have been discovered so far. One such family that hosts these characteristics is the antiperovskites, A$_3$BO, a family of 3D Dirac semimetals. The A=Eu$^{2+}$ compounds magnetically order with multiple phases as a function of applied magnetic field. Here, by combining band structure calculations with neutron diffraction and magnetic measurem…
We study the stability of Dirac semimetals with $N$ nodes in three spatial dimensions against strong $1/r$ Coulomb interactions. We particularly study the cases of $N=4$ and $N=16$, where the $N=4$ Dirac semimetal is described by the staggered fermions and the $N=16$ Dirac semimetal is described by the doubled lattice fermions. We take into account the $1/r$ long-range Coulomb interactions between the bulk electrons. Based on the U(1) lattice gauge theory, we analyze the system from the strong coupling limit. It is shown that the Dirac semimetals survive in the strong coupling limit when the o…
An ideal Weyl semimetal with a single pair of Weyl points (WPs) may be generated by splitting a single Dirac point (DP) through the breaking of time-reversal symmetry by magnetic order. However, most known Dirac semimetals possess a pair of DPs along an axis that is protected by crystalline symmetry. Here, we demonstrate that a single pair of WPs may also be generated from a pair of DPs. Using first-principles band structure calculations, we show that inducing ferromagnetism in the AFM Dirac semimetal EuCd2As2 generates a single pair of WPs due to its half-metallic nature. Analysis with a low-…
Pyrite-type PdSb$_2$ with a nonsymmorphic cubic structure has been predicted to host six-fold-degenerate exotic fermions beyond the Dirac and Weyl fermions. Though magnetotransport measurements on PdSb$_2$ suggest its topologically nontrivial character, direct spectroscpic study of its band structure remains absent. Here, by utilizing high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we present a systematic study on its bulk and surface electronic structure. Through careful comparison with first-principles calculations, we verify the existence of six-fold fermions in PdSb$_2$, which a…
Pezzini et al. reported an unconventional mass enhancement in topological nodal line semimetal ZrSiS (Nat. Phys. 14, 178 (2018), whose origin remains puzzling. In this material, strong short-range interactions might induce excitonic particle-hole pairs. Here we study the renormalization of fermion velocities and find that the mass enhancement in ZrSiS can be well understood if we suppose that ZrSiS is close to the quantum critical point between semimetal and excitonic insulator. Near this quantum critical point, the fermion velocities are considerably reduced by excitonic quantum fluctuation, …
We report the first experimental results of the magnetoresistance, Hall effect, and quantum Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations on single crystals of ZrTe, which was recently predicted to be a new type of topological semimetal hosting both triply degenerate crossing points and Weyl fermion state. The analysis of Hall effect and quantum oscillations indicate that ZrTe is a multiband system with low carrier density, high carrier mobility, small cross-sectional area of Fermi surface, and light cyclotron effective mass, as observed in many topological semimetals. Meanwhile, the angular dependence of th…
We study the excitonic semimetal-insulator quantum phase transition in three-dimensional Dirac semimetal in which the fermion dispersion is strongly anisotropic. After solving the Dyson-Schwinger equation for the excitonic gap, we obtain a global phase diagram in the plane spanned by the parameter for Coulomb interaction strength and the parameter for fermion velocity anisotropy. We find that excitonic gap generation is promoted as the interaction becomes stronger, but is suppressed if the anisotropy increases. Applying our results to two realistic three-dimensional Dirac semimetals Na$_{3}$Bi…
We consider the effects of weak quenched fermionic disorder on the quantum-phase transition between the Dirac semimetal and charge density wave (CDW) insulator in two spatial dimensions. The symmetry breaking transition is described by the Gross-Neveu-Yukawa (GNY) theory of Dirac fermions coupled to an Ising order parameter field. Treating the disorder using the replica method, we consider chemical potential, vector potential (gauge), and random mass disorders, which all arise from non-magnetic charge impurities. We self-consistently account for the Landau damping of long-wavelength order-para…
Supersymmetry (SUSY) interchanges bosons and fermions but no direct evidences of it have been revealed in nature yet. In this letter, we observe that fluctuating pair density waves (PDW) consist of two complex order parameters which can be superpartners of the unavoidably-doubled Weyl fermions in three-dimensional lattice models. We construct explicit fermionic lattice models featuring 3D Weyl fermions and show that PDW is the leading instability via a continuous phase transition as short-range interactions exceed a critical value. Using renormalization group, we theoretically show that N=2 sp…
We determine the fate of interacting fermions described by the Hamiltonian $H=\textbf{p}\cdot \textbf{J}$ in three-dimensional topological semimetals with linear band crossing, where $\textbf{p}$ is momentum and $\textbf{J}$ are the spin-$j$ matrices for half-integer pseudospin $j\geq 3/2$. While weak short-range interactions are irrelevant at the crossing point due to the vanishing density of states, weak long-range Coulomb interactions lead to a renormalization of the band structure. Using a self-consistent perturbative renormalization group approach, we show that band crossings of the type …
When a metal undergoes continuous quantum phase transition, the correlation length diverges at the critical point and the quantum fluctuation of order parameter behaves as a gapless bosonic mode. Generically, the coupling of this boson to fermions induces a variety of unusual quantum critical phenomena, such as non-Fermi liquid behavior and various emergent symmetries. Here, we perform a renormalization group analysis of the semimetal-superconductor quantum criticality in a three-dimensional anisotropic Weyl semimetal. Surprisingly, distinct from previously studied quantum critical systems, th…
Non-hermitian quantum systems can exhibit spectral degeneracies known as exceptional points, where two or more eigenvectors coalesce, leading to a non-diagonalizable Jordan block. It is known that symmetries can enhance the abundance of exceptional points in non-interacting systems. Here, we investigate the fate of such symmetry protected exceptional points in the presence of a symmetry preserving interaction between fermions and find that, (i) exceptional points are stable in the presence of the interaction. Their propagation through the parameter space leads to the formation of characteristi…
We compute the polarization function in a doped three-dimensional anisotropic-Weyl semimetal, in which the fermion energy dispersion is linear in two components of the momenta and quadratic in the third. Through detailed calculations, we find that the long wavelength plasmon mode depends on the fermion density $n_e$ in the form $Ω_{p}^{\bot}\propto n_{e}^{3/10}$ within the basal plane and behaves as $Ω_{p}^{z}\propto n_{e}^{1/2}$ along the third direction. This unique characteristic of the plasmon mode can be probed by various experimental techniques, such as electron energy-loss spectroscopy.…
Many clever routes to Majorana fermions have been discovered by exploiting the interplay between superconductivity and band topology in metals and insulators. However, realizations in semimetals remain less explored. We ask, ``under what conditions do superconductor vortices in time-reversal symmetric Weyl semimetals -- three-dimensional semimetals with only time-reversal symmetry -- trap Majorana fermions on the surface?'' If each constant-$k_{z}$ plane, where $z$ is the vortex axis, contains equal numbers of Weyl nodes of each chirality, we predict a generically gapped vortex and derive a to…
We study the quantum critical phenomena emerging at the transition from triple-Weyl semimetal to band insulator, which is a topological phase transition described by the change of topological invariant. The critical point realizes a new type of semimetal state in which the fermion dispersion is cubic along two directions and quadratic along the third. Our renormalization group analysis reveals that, the Coulomb interaction is marginal at low energies and even arbitrarily weak Coulomb interaction suffices to induce an infrared fixed point. We compute a number of observable quantities, and show …
