We study the excitonic semimetal-insulator quantum phase transition in three-dimensional Dirac semimetal in which the fermion dispersion is strongly anisotropic. After solving the Dyson-Schwinger equation for the excitonic gap, we obtain a global phase diagram in the plane spanned by the parameter for Coulomb interaction strength and the parameter for fermion velocity anisotropy. We find that excitonic gap generation is promoted as the interaction becomes stronger, but is suppressed if the anisotropy increases. Applying our results to two realistic three-dimensional Dirac semimetals Na$_{3}$Bi and Cd$_{3}$As$_{2}$, we establish that their exact zero-temperature ground state is gapless semimetal, rather than excitonic insulator. Moreover, these two materials are far from the excitonic quantum critical point, thus there should not be any observable evidence for excitonic insulating behavior. This conclusion is in general agreement with the existing experiments of Na$_{3}$Bi and Cd$_{3}$As$_{2}$.
Recently there have been several proposals of materials predicted to be nodal-ring semimetals, where zero energy excitations are characterized by a nodal ring in the momentum space. This class of materials falls between the Dirac-like semimetals and the more conventional Fermi-surface systems. As a step towards understanding this unconventional system, we explore the effects of the long-range Coulomb interaction. Due to the vanishing density of states at the Fermi level, Coulomb interaction is only partially screened and remains long-ranged. Through renormalization group and large-$N_f$ comput…
The strong Coulomb interaction between massless Dirac fermions can drive a semimetal-insulator transition in single-layer graphene by dynamically generating an excitonic fermion gap. There is a critical interaction strength $λ_c$ that separates the semimetal phase from the insulator phase. We calculate the specific heat and susceptibility of the system and show that they exhibit distinct behaviors in the semimetal and insulator phases.
We study the long-range Coulomb interaction effects on the double-Weyl fermion system which is possibly realized in the three dimensional semimetal HgCr$_2$Se$_4$ in the ferromagnetic phase. Within the one-loop renormalization group analysis, we find that there exists a stable fixed point at which the Coulomb interaction is screened anisotropically. At the stable fixed point, the renormalized Coulomb interaction induces logarithmic corrections to the physical quantities such as specific heat, compressibility, diamagnetic susceptibility, and the finite frequency (dynamic) conductivity that are …
Taking into account the interplay between the disorder and Coulomb interaction, the phase diagram of three-dimensional anisotropic Weyl semimetal is studied by renormalization group theory. Weak disorder is irrelevant in anisotropic Weyl semimetal, while the disorder becomes relevant and drives a quantum phase transition from semimetal to compressible diffusive metal phases if the disorder strength is larger than a critical value. The long-range Coulomb interaction is irrelevant in clean anisotropic Weyl semimetal. However, interestingly, we find that the long-range Coulomb interaction exerts …
Recent experiments on Weyl semimetals reveal that charged impurities may play an important role. We use a screened Coulomb disorder to model the charged impurities, and study the magneto-transport in a two-node Weyl semimetal. It is found that when the external magnetic field is applied parallel to the electric field, the calculated longitudinal magnetoconductivity shows positive in the magnetic field, which is just the negative longitudinal magnetoresistivity (LMR) observed in experiments. When the two fields are perpendicular to each other, the transverse magnetoconductivities are measured. …
We employ diagrammatic Monte Carlo simulations to establish criteria for the stability of line-node semimetals in the presence of Coulomb interactions. Our results indicate a phase transition to a chiral insulating state that occurs at a finite interaction threshold which we determine. We also compute the Landau levels for out-of-plane and in-plane magnetic fields in the symmetric and symmetry-broken phases. We find that the magnetic field couples to the chiral order parameter, implying that this degree of freedom can be manipulated in situ in experiments. Finally, we check the existence of ed…
We study interaction effects, including both long-ranged Coulomb and short-range interactions, in three-dimensional topological triple-Weyl semimetals whose triple-Weyl points are protected by crystal symmetries. By performing Wilsonian renormalization group analysis of the low-energy effective field theory of the minimal model with triple-Weyl nodes, we find that the fixed point of noninteracting triple-Weyl fermions is unstable in the presence of Coulomb interactions and flows to a nontrivial stable fixed point representing marginal Fermi liquids with anisotropic screening effects. We furthe…
Using a combination of analytical arguments and state-of-the-art diagrammatic Monte Carlo simulations we show that the corrections to the dispersion in interacting Weyl semimetals are determined by the ultraviolet cutoff and the inverse screening length. If both of these are finite, then the diagrammatic series is convergent even in the low-temperature limit, which implies that the semimetallic phase remains stable. Meanwhile, the absence of a UV cutoff or screening results in logarithmic divergences at zero temperature. These results highlight the crucial impact of Coulomb interactions and sc…
We study the fate of double-Weyl fermions in three-dimensional systems in the presence of long-range Coulomb interactions. By employing the momentum-shell renormalization group approach, we find that the fixed point of noninteracting double-Weyl fermions is unstable against Coulomb interactions and flows to a nontrivial stable fixed point with anisotropic screening effect. Moreover, experimentally measurable quantities such as specific heat obtain unusual logarithmic corrections. We also discuss implications of our results to three-dimensional materials HgCr2Se4 and SrSi2, candidate materials …
We study the inelastic scattering rate due to the Coulomb interaction in three-dimensional Dirac/Weyl semimetals at finite temperature. We show that the perturbation theory diverges because of the long-range nature of the interaction, hence, thermally induced screening must be taken into account. We demonstrate that the scattering rate has a non-monotonic energy dependence with a sharp peak owing to the resonant decay into thermal plasmons. We also consider the Hubbard interaction for comparison. We show that, in contrast to the Coulomb case, it can be well described by the second-order pertur…
We investigate the superconductivity of 3D Luttinger semimetals, such as YPtBi, where Cooper pairs are constituted of spin-3/2 quasiparticles. Various pairing mechanisms have already been considered for these semimetals, such as from polar phonons modes, and in this work we explore pairing from the screened electron-electron Coulomb repulsion. In these materials, the small Fermi energy and the spin-orbit coupling strongly influence how charge fluctuations can mediate pairing. We find the superconducting critical temperature as a function of doping for an s-wave order parameter, and determine i…
We study superconductivity driven by screened Coulomb repulsion in three-dimensional Luttinger semimetals with a quadratic band touching and strong spin-orbit coupling. In these semimetals, the Cooper pairs are formed by spin-3/2 fermions with non-trivial wavefunctions. We numerically solve the linear Eliashberg equation to obtain the critical temperature of a singlet s-wave gap function as a function of doping, with account of spin-orbit and self-energy corrections. In order to understand the underlying mechanism of superconductivity, we compute the sensitivity of the critical temperature to …
We study the effects of strong $1/r$ long-range Coulomb interactions in a Weyl semimetal. We consider a three-dimensional (3D) Dirac fermion system on a lattice with a time-reversal symmetry breaking term, and take into account $1/r$ long-range Coulomb interactions between the bulk electrons. This model is regarded as the case where magnetic impurities are doped into the bulk of a 3D topological insulator. With the use of the strong coupling expansion of the lattice gauge theory and the mean-field approximation, we analyze the system from the strong coupling limit. It is shown that parity symm…
There is a close connection between various new phenomena in Weyl semimetals and the existence of linear band crossings in the single particle description. We show, by a full self-consistent mean-field calculation, how this picture is modified in the presence of long-range Coulomb interactions. The chiral symmetry breaking occurs at strong enough interactions and the internode interband excitonic pairing channel is found to be significant, which determines the gap-opened band profile varying with interaction strength. Remarkably, in the resultant interacting phase, finite band Chern number jum…
In nodal-line semimetals, Coulomb interactions and short-range correlated disorder are both marginal perturbations to the clean non-interacting Hamiltonian. We analyze their interplay using a weak-coupling renormalization group approach. In the clean case, the Coulomb interaction has been found to be marginally irrelevant, leading to Fermi liquid behavior. We extend the analysis to incorporate the effects of disorder. The nodal line structure gives rise to kinematical constraints similar to that for a two-dimensional Fermi surface, which plays a crucial role in the one-loop renor- malization o…
Metals with values of the resistivity and the Hall coefficient much larger than typical ones, e.g., of sodium, are called semimetals. We suggest a model for semimetals which takes into account the strong Coulomb repulsion of the charge carriers, especially important in transition-metal and rare-earth compounds. For that purpose we extend the Hubbard model by coupling one additional orbital per site via hybridization to the Hubbard orbitals. We calculate the spectral function, resistivity and Hall coefficient of the model using dynamical mean-field theory. Starting from the Mott-insulating stat…

Using soft x-ray angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy we probed the bulk electronic structure of Td MoTe2. We found that on-site Coulomb interaction leads to a Lifshitz transition, which is essential for a precise description of the electronic structure. A hybrid Weyl semimetal state with a pair of energy bands touching at both type-I and type-II Weyl nodes is indicated by comparing the experimental data with theoretical calculations. Unveiling the importance of Coulomb interaction opens up a new route to comprehend the unique properties of MoTe2, and is significant for understanding the …
A sufficiently strong long-range Coulomb interaction can induce excitonic pairing in gapless Dirac semimetals, which generates a finite gap and drives semimetal-insulator quantum phase transition. This phenomenon is in close analogy to dynamical chiral symmetry breaking in high energy physics. In most realistic Dirac semimetals, including suspended graphene, Coulomb interaction is too weak to open an excitonic gap. The Coulomb interaction plays a more important role at low energies in a two-dimensional semi-Dirac semimetal, in which the fermion spectrum is linear in one component of momenta an…
The effective low energy description of interacting Dirac and Weyl semimetals is that of massless quantum electrodynamics with several Lorentz breaking material parameters. We perform a renormalization group analysis of Coulomb interaction in anisotropic Dirac and Weyl semimetals and show that the anisotropy persists in the material systems at the infrared fixed point. In addition, a tilt of the fermion cones breaking inversion symmetry induces a magnetoelectric term in the electrodynamics of the material whose magnitude runs to match that of the electronic tilt at the fixed point.
The interplay of spin orbit coupling and electron electron interaction condensing new phases of matter is an important new phenomena in solid state physics. In this paper we explore the nature of excitonic phases induced in Weyl semimetals by long range Coulomb repulsion. Its has been previously shown that short range repulsion leads to a ferromagnetic insulator while short range attraction results in a charge density wave state. Here we show the the charge density wave is the energetically favored state in the presence of long range repulsion.
We investigate the interplay of Coulomb interactions and correlated disorder in pseudospin-3/2 semimetals, which exhibit birefringent spectra in the absence of interactions. Coulomb interactions drive the system to a marginal Fermi liquid, both for the two-dimensional (2d) and three-dimensional (3d) cases. Short-ranged correlated disorder in 2d, or a power-law correlated disorder 3d, has the same engineering dimension as the Coulomb term, in a renormalization group (RG) sense. In order to analyze the combined effects of these two kinds of interactions, we apply a dimensional regularization sch…
We study the interplay between spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and Coulomb repulsion in a Hubbard model on a decorated honeycomb lattice which leads to a plethora of phases. While a quantum spin hall insulator is stable at weak Coulomb repulsion and moderate SOC, a semimetallic phase emerges at large SOC in a broad range of Coulomb repulsion. This semimetallic phase has topological properties not observed in conventional metals such as a finite, non-quantized spin Hall conductivity. At large Coulomb repulsion and negligible spin-orbit coupling, electronic correlations stabilize a resonance valence b…
The low-energy behaviors of gapless double- and triple-Weyl fermions caused by the interplay of long-range Coulomb interaction and quenched disorder are studied by performing a renormalization group analysis. It is found that an arbitrarily weak disorder drives the double-Weyl semimetal to undergo a quantum phase transition into a compressible diffusive metal, independent of the disorder type and the Coulomb interaction strength. In contrast, the nature of the ground state of triple-Weyl fermion system relies sensitively on the specific disorder type in the noninteracting limit: The system is …
In the framework of mean field approach, we study topological Mott transition in a two band model of spinless fermions on a square lattice at half filling. We consider the combined effect of the on-site Coulomb repulsion and the spin-orbit Rashba coupling. The ground state phase diagram is calculated as a function of the strength of the spin-orbit Rashba coupling and the Coulomb repulsion. The spin-orbit Rashba coupling leads to a distinct phase of matter, the topological semimetal. We study a new type of phase transition between the non-topological insulator and topological semimetal states. …
It has been recently predicted that the interplay between Coulomb interactions and Berry curvature can produce interesting optical phenomena in topologically nontrivial two-dimensional insulators. Here, we present a theory of the optical absorption for three-dimensional, hole-doped Weyl semimetals. We find that the Berry curvature, Coulomb interactions and the nonlinearity in the single-particle energy spectrum can together enable a light-induced valley polarization. We support and supplement our numerical results with an analytical toy model calculation, which unveils topologically nontrivial…
We present a non-perturbative study of the quantum many-body effects caused by the long-range Coulomb interaction in a two-dimensional semi-Dirac semimetal. This kind of semimetal may be realized in deformed graphene and a class of other realistic materials. In the non-interacting limit, the dispersion of semi-Dirac fermion is linear in one direction and quadratic in the other direction. When the impact of Coulomb interaction is taken into account, such a dispersion can be significantly modified. To reveal the correlation effects, we first obtain the exact self-consistent Dyson-Schwinger equat…
We investigate the effect of long-range Coulomb interaction on the quasiparticle properties and the dielectric function of clean three-dimensional Weyl semimetals at zero temperature using a functional renormalization group (FRG) approach. The Coulomb interaction is represented via a bosonic Hubbard-Stratonovich field which couples to the fermionic density. We derive truncated FRG flow equations for the fermionic and bosonic self-energies and for the three-legged vertices with two fermionic and one bosonic external legs. We consider two different cutoff schemes --- cutoff in fermionic or boson…
Weyl fermions scattering from a random Coulomb potential are predicted to exhibit resistivity versus temperature $ρ\space α\space T^{-4}$ in a single particle model. Here we show that, in closed environment-grown polycrystalline samples of $Y_{2}Ir_{2}O_{7}$, $ρ= ρ_{0} T^{-4}$ over four orders of magnitude in $ρ$. While the measured prefactor, $ρ_{0}$, is obtained from the model using reasonable materials parameters, the $T^{-4}$ behavior extends far beyond the model's range of applicability. In particular, the behavior extends into the low-temperature, high-resistivity region where the Ioffe-…
We act on the suggestion that an excitonic insulator state might separate---at very low temperatures---a semimetal from a semiconductor and ask for the nature of these transitions. Based on the analysis of electron-hole pairing in the extended Falicov-Kimball model, we show that tuning the Coulomb attraction between both species, a continuous crossover between a BCS-like transition of Cooper-type pairs and a Bose-Einstein condensation of preformed tightly-bound excitons might be achieved in a solid-state system. The precursor of this crossover in the normal state might cause the transport anom…
We study the stability of Dirac semimetals with $N$ nodes in three spatial dimensions against strong $1/r$ Coulomb interactions. We particularly study the cases of $N=4$ and $N=16$, where the $N=4$ Dirac semimetal is described by the staggered fermions and the $N=16$ Dirac semimetal is described by the doubled lattice fermions. We take into account the $1/r$ long-range Coulomb interactions between the bulk electrons. Based on the U(1) lattice gauge theory, we analyze the system from the strong coupling limit. It is shown that the Dirac semimetals survive in the strong coupling limit when the o…
We present an analytical low-energy theory of piezoelectric electron-phonon interactions in undoped Weyl semimetals, taking into account also Coulomb interactions. We show that piezoelectric interactions generate a long-range attractive potential between Weyl fermions. This potential comes with a characteristic angular anisotropy. From the one-loop renormalization group approach and a mean-field analysis, we predict that superconducting phases with either conventional s-wave singlet pairing or nodal-line triplet pairing could be realized for sufficiently strong piezoelectric coupling. For smal…
We study the quantum critical phenomena emerging at the transition from triple-Weyl semimetal to band insulator, which is a topological phase transition described by the change of topological invariant. The critical point realizes a new type of semimetal state in which the fermion dispersion is cubic along two directions and quadratic along the third. Our renormalization group analysis reveals that, the Coulomb interaction is marginal at low energies and even arbitrarily weak Coulomb interaction suffices to induce an infrared fixed point. We compute a number of observable quantities, and show …
A full, nonperturbative renormalization group analysis of interacting electrons in a graphite layer is performed, in order to investigate the deviations from Fermi liquid theory that have been observed in the experimental measures of a linear quasiparticle decay rate in graphite. The electrons are coupled through Coulomb interactions, which remain unscreened due to the semimetallic character of the layer. We show that the model flows towards the noninteracting fixed-point for the whole range of couplings, with logarithmic corrections which signal the marginal character of the interaction separ…
The low-energy theory of graphene exhibits spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking due to pairing of quasiparticles and holes, corresponding to a semimetal-insulator transition at strong Coulomb coupling. We report a Lattice Monte Carlo study of the critical exponents of this transition as a function of the number of Dirac flavors $N_f^{}$, finding $δ= 1.25 \pm 0.05$ for $N_f^{} = 0$, $δ= 2.26 \pm 0.06$ for $N_f^{} = 2$ and $δ= 2.62 \pm 0.11$ for $N_f^{} = 4$, with $γ\simeq 1$ throughout. We compare our results with recent analytical work for graphene and closely related systems, and discuss scen…
We reveal an ultrafast purely electronic phase transition in \TNS, which is a plausible excitonic insulator, after excited by an ultrafast infrared laser pulse. Specifically, the order parameter of the strong electron-hole binding shrinks with enhancing the pump pulse, and above a critical pump fluence, a photo-excited semimetallic state is experimentally identified with the absence of ultrafast structural transition. In addition, the bare valence and conduction bands and also the effective exciton binding energy in \TNS~are determined. These findings and detailed analysis suggest a bare noneq…
We investigate the electron properties of the monolayer and bilayer silicene which is the honeycomb lattice consist of silicon atoms, including the optical conductivity and charged impurity scattering, due to the quasipatricle Dirac-like behaviors near the K-point of silicene. The spin, valley, sublattice degrees of freedom are taken into consider in the multi-band tight-binding model. In momentum space, the scattering matrix which connects the two bare (without interaction) Green's functions in the quasiparticle momentum transport process, could be momentum-independent for the single impuirit…
We study both noncentrosymmetric and time-reversal breaking Weyl semimetal systems under a strong magnetic field with the Coulomb interaction. The three-dimensional bulk system is reduced to many mutually interacting quasi-one-dimensional wires. Each strongly correlated wire can be approached within the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid formalism. Including impurity scatterings, we inspect the localization effect and the temperature dependence of the electrical resistivity. The effect of a large number of Weyl points in real materials is also discussed.
Topological insulators in the presence of strong Coulomb interaction constitute novel phases of matter. Transitions between these phases can be driven by single-particle or many-body effects. On the basis of {\it ab-initio} calculations, we identify a concrete material, {\it i.e.} Ca$_{2}$PtO$_{4}$, that turns out to be a hole-doped weak topological insulator. Interestingly, the Pt-$d$ orbitals in this material are relevant for the band inversion that gives rise to the topological phase. Therefore, Coulomb interaction should be of importance in Ca$_{2}$PtO$_{4}$. To study the influence of inte…
We report on Hybrid-Monte-Carlo simulations of the tight-binding model with long-range Coulomb interactions for the electronic properties of graphene. We investigate the spontaneous breaking of sublattice symmetry corresponding to a transition from the semimetal to an antiferromagnetic insulating phase. Our short-range interactions thereby include the partial screening due to electrons in higher energy states from ab initio calculations based on the constrained random phase approximation [T.O.Wehling {\it et al.}, Phys.Rev.Lett.{\bf 106}, 236805 (2011)]. In contrast to a similar previous Monte…
We investigate the mutual influence of tilt, disorder, and Coulomb interaction in a type-I Dirac semimetal (DSM) with $x$-direction tilt by performing a renormalization group analysis. The interplay between disorder and ordinary tilt generates an effective tilt along the $x$-direction, which is the physically observable one. There exist two types of disorder which increase the effective tilt and drive a phase transition from the DSM phase to the diffusive metal phase. The diffusive phase transition stops the increase of the effective tilt and the surface of the original Dirac cone in the diffu…
The interplay of electronic band structures and electron-electron interactions is known to brew new phases in condensed matter. In this paper, we investigate thermodynamic phases and corresponding electronic structures of the Weyl semimetal in the strong onsite Coulomb interaction limit. Based on a minimum model of the Weyl semimetal with two linear Weyl nodes, it is shown that generically the Weyl semimetal becomes magnetic in the presence of interactions. In particular, it is shown that the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya exchange interaction is generally induced so that the A-type antiferromagnetic (…
We investigate the interplay of Coulomb interactions and short-range-correlated disorder in three dimensional systems where absent disorder the non-interacting band structure hosts a quadratic band crossing. Though the clean Coulomb problem is believed to host a 'non-Fermi liquid' phase, disorder and Coulomb interactions have the same scaling dimension in a renormalization group (RG) sense, and thus should be treated on an equal footing. We therefore implement a controlled $ε$-expansion and apply it at leading order to derive RG flow equations valid when disorder and interactions are both weak…
We determine the phase diagram of the Kane-Mele model with a long-range Coulomb interaction using an exact quantum Monte Carlo method. Long-range interactions are expected to play a role in honeycomb materials because the vanishing density of states in the semimetallic weak-coupling phase suppresses screening. According to our results, the Kane-Mele-Coulomb model supports the same phases as the Kane-Mele-Hubbard model. The nonlocal part of the interaction promotes short-range sublattice charge fluctuations, which compete with antiferromagnetic order driven by the onsite repulsion. Consequently…
Quantum criticality, a manifestation of emergent scale invariance in electron wavefunctions arises from intricate many-body quantum entanglement. One of the natural venues for the criticality is clean undoped Dirac semimetals, known as a marginally-renormalized critical phase. The ground state is only slightly modified from the Slater-type product wavefunction because the scatterings from weak disorder and Coulomb interactions are suppressed. Here, using the renormalization group (RG) analysis, we show that a novel class of quantum criticality appears in Dirac semimetals when the disorder stre…
The response to an electric field (DC and AC) of electronic systems in which the Fermi "surface" consists of a number of 3D Weyl points (such as some pyrochlore iridates) exhibits a peculiar combination of characteristics usually associated with insulating and conducting behaviour. Generically a neutral plasma in clean materials can be described by a tight binding model with a strong spin-orbit interaction. A system of that type has a vanishing DC conductivity; however the current response to the DC field is very slow: the current decays with time in a powerwise manner, different from an insul…
Exotic physics often emerges around quantum criticality in metallic systems. Here we explore the nature of topological phase transitions between 3D double-Weyl semimetals and insulators (through annihilating double-Weyl nodes with opposite chiralities) in the presence of Coulomb interactions. From renormalization-group (RG) analysis, we find a non-Fermi-liquid quantum critical point (QCP) between the double-Weyl semimetals and insulators when artificially neglecting short-range interactions. However, it is shown that this non-Fermi-liquid QCP is actually unstable against nematic ordering when …
Weyl semimetal with Weyl fermions at Fermi energy is one of the topological materials, and is a condensed-matter realization of the relativistic fermions. However, there are several crucial differences such as the shift of Fermi energy, which can hinder the expected interesting physics. Chiral anomaly is a representative nontrivial phenomenon associated with Weyl fermions, which dictates the transfer of fermions between the Weyl fermions with opposite chirality; it is manifested as the negative magnetoresistance. Here we demonstrate that the magnetoresistance is robust against the deviation fr…
Two-dimensional Dirac semimetal with tilted Dirac cone has recently attracted increasing interest. Tilt of Dirac cone can be realized in a number of materials, including deformed graphene, surface state of topological crystalline insulator, and certain organic compound. We study how Dirac cone tilting affects the low-energy properties by presenting a renormalization group analysis of the Coulomb interaction and quenched disorder. Random scalar potential or random vector potential along the tilting direction cannot exist on its own as it always dynamically generates a new type of disorder, whic…
We present results from Monte Carlo simulations of a three dimensional fermionic field theory which can be derived from a model of graphene in which electrons interact via a screened Coulomb potential. For our simulations we employ lattice gauge theory methods used in elementary particle physics. We show that the theory undergoes a second order phase transition and we provide estimates for the critical exponents. The estimated value of the physical critical coupling implies that graphene in vacuum is an insulator. We also present the first results for the quasiparticle dispersion relation.
In this paper the phase diagram of Dirac semimetals is studied within lattice Monte-Carlo simulation. In particular, we concentrate on the dynamical chiral symmetry breaking which results in semimetal/insulator transition. Using numerical simulation we determined the values of the critical coupling constant of the semimetal/insulator transition for different values of the anisotropy of the Fermi velocity. This measurement allowed us to draw tentative phase diagram for Dirac semimetals. It turns out that within the Dirac model with Coulomb interaction both Na$_3$Bi and Cd$_3$As$_2$ known experi…
Due to strong spin-orbit coupling, charge carriers in three-dimensional quadratic band touching Luttinger semimetals have non-trivial wavefunctions characterized by a pseudospin of 3/2. We compute the dielectric permittivity of such semimetals at finite doping, within the random phase approximation. Because of interband coupling, the dielectric screening shows a reduced plasma frequency and an increased spectral weight at small wavevectors, compared to a regular quadratic band. This weakens the effective Coulomb potential, modifying the single-particle self-energy for which we present both ana…
In this paper the observed Dirac semimetals Na$_3$Bi and Cd$_3$As$_2$ are studied within lattice simulation. We formulate lattice field theory with rooted staggered fermions on anisotropic lattice. It is shown that in the limit of zero temporal lattice spacing this theory reproduces low energy effective theory of Dirac semimetals. Using this lattice theory we study the phase diagram of Dirac semimetals in the plane effective coupling constant--Fermi velocity anisotropy. Within the formulated theory the results are practically volume independent in contrast with our previous study. Our results …
We investigate the low-energy scaling behavior of an interacting 3D Weyl semimetal in the presence of disorder. In order to achieve a renormalization group analysis of the theory, we focus on the effects of a short-ranged-correlated disorder potential, checking nevertheless that this choice is not essential to locate the different phases of the Weyl semimetal. We show that there is a line of fixed-points in the renormalization group flow of the interacting theory, corresponding to the disorder-driven transition to a diffusive metal phase. Along that boundary, the critical disorder strength und…
We study the electromagnetic properties of Weyl semimetals with strong interactions. Focusing on a single Weyl cone in the band structure, we induce strong interactions by coupling the Weyl fermion with a tunable coupling constant $g_f$ to a quantum critical system. The critical fluctuations are described by a conformal field theory containing fermionic operators with scaling dimension $Δ$. Employing the methods of the holographic correspondence, we then derive the effective theory of the Weyl fermion in the presence of external electric and magnetic fields. In particular, we determine the fre…
Recent discoveries of a new type of quantum criticality arising from Yb-valence fluctuations in Yb-based metal in periodic crystal and quasicrystal have opened a new class of quantum critical phenomena in correlated electron systems. To clarify whether this new concept can be generalized to other rare-earth-based semimetal and insulator, we study SmS which exhibits golden-black phase transition under pressure. By constructing the model for SmS, we show that Coulomb repulsion between 4f and 5d orbitals at Sm drives first-order valence transition (FOVT) and semimetal-to-insulator transition (MIT…
Fermi liquid theory works very well in most normal metals, but is found violated in many strongly correlated electron systems, such as cuprate and heavy-fermion superconductors. A widely accepted criterion is that, the Fermi liquid theory is valid when the interaction-induced fermion damping rate approaches zero more rapidly than the energy. Otherwise, it is invalid. Here, we demonstrate that this criterion breaks down in topological double-and triple-Weyl semimetals. Renormalization group analysis reveals that, although the damping rate of double- and triple-Weyl fermions induced by the Coulo…
Strongly interacting Dirac semimetals are investigated using a holographic model especially geared to compute the single-particle correlation function for this case, including both interaction effects and nonzero temperature. We calculate the (homogeneous) electrical conductivity at zero chemical potential, and show that it consists of two contributions. The interband contribution scales as a power law either in frequency or in temperature for low frequency. The precise power is related to a critical exponent of the dual holographic theory, which is a parameter in the model. On top of that we …
In this paper we study transport properties of electrons on the two-dimensional honeycomb lattice. We consider a half-filled system in the vicinity of a symmetry-breaking transition from a semimetallic phase towards an insulating phase with either charge density or spin density wave order. The effect of either order is to break the sublattice inversion symmetry which induces a finite gap for the electronic single-particle excitations. Phenomenologically, such a scenario is described in the framework of a Gross-Neveu theory. We analyze two related formulations of the model by means of (i) a con…
