We reveal an ultrafast purely electronic phase transition in \TNS, which is a plausible excitonic insulator, after excited by an ultrafast infrared laser pulse. Specifically, the order parameter of the strong electron-hole binding shrinks with enhancing the pump pulse, and above a critical pump fluence, a photo-excited semimetallic state is experimentally identified with the absence of ultrafast structural transition. In addition, the bare valence and conduction bands and also the effective exciton binding energy in \TNS~are determined. These findings and detailed analysis suggest a bare nonequilibrium semimetallic phase in $Ta_2NiSe_5$ and the strong electron-hole binding cannot be exclusively driven by Coulomb interaction.
Utilizing the unbiased time-dependent density-matrix renormalization group technique, we examine the photoemission spectra in the extended Falicov-Kimball model at zero and finite temperatures, particularly with regard to the excitonic insulator state most likely observed in the quasi-one-dimensional material Ta$_2$NiSe$_5$. Working with infinite boundary conditions, we are able to simulate all dynamical correlation functions directly in the thermodynamic limit. For model parameters best suited for Ta$_2$NiSe$_5$ the photoemission spectra show a weak but clearly visible two-peak structure, aro…
We present a combined study from angle-resolved photoemission and density-functional theory calculations of the temperature-dependent electronic structure in the excitonic insulator candidate Ta$_2$NiSe$_5$. Our experimental measurements unambiguously establish the normal state as a semimetal with a significant band overlap of $>$100~meV. Our temperature-dependent measurements indicate how these low-energy states hybridise when cooling through the well-known 327~K phase transition in this system. From our calculations and polarisation-dependent photoemission measurements, we demonstrate the im…
We investigate the non-equilibrium electronic structure and characteristic time scales in a candidate excitonic insulator, Ta$_2$NiSe$_5$, using time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy with a temporal resolution of 50 fs. Following a strong photoexcitation, the band gap closes transiently within 100 fs, i.e., on a time scale faster than the typical lattice vibrational period. Furthermore, we find that the characteristic time associated with the rise of the photoemission intensity above the Fermi energy decreases with increasing excitation strength, while the relaxation time of the …
Utilizing the time-dependent density-matrix renormalization group technique, we numerically prove photoinduced pairing states in the extended Falicov-Kimball model (EFKM) at half filling, both with and without internal SU(2) symmetry. In the time-dependent photoemission spectra an extra band appears above the Fermi energy after pulse irradiation, indicating an insulator-to-metal transition. Even in the absence of the SU(2) structure, the pair correlations are enhanced during the pump, and afterwards decrease over time. This implies the possible metallization of Ta$_2$NiSe$_5$, a strong candida…
Using the band structure calculation and mean-field analysis of the derived three-chain Hubbard model with phonon degrees of freedom, we discuss the origin of the orthorhombic-to-monoclinic phase transition of the layered chalcogenide Ta$_2$NiSe$_5$. We show that the Bose-Einstein condensation of excitonic electron-hole pairs cooperatively induces the instability of the phonon mode at momentum $q\rightarrow 0$ in the quasi-one-dimensional Ta-NiSe-Ta chain, resulting in the structural phase transition of the system. The calculated single-particle spectra reproduce the deformation of the band st…
The transition metal chalcogenide Ta$_2$NiSe$_5$ undergoes a second-order phase transition at $T_c=328$ K involving a small lattice distortion. Below $T_c$, a band gap at the center of its Brillouin zone increases up to about 0.35 eV. In this work, we study the electronic structure of Ta$_2$NiSe$_5$ in its low-temperature semiconducting phase, using resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) at the Ni $L_3$-edge. In addition to a weak fluorescence response, we observe a collection of intense Raman-like peaks that we attribute to electron-hole excitations. Using density functional theory calcul…
Excitonic insulator (EI) is an intriguing insulating phase of matter, where electrons and holes are bonded into pairs, so called excitons, and form a phase-coherent state via Bose-Einstein Condensation (BEC). Its theoretical concept has been proposed several decades ago, but the followed research is very limited, due to the rare occurrence of EI in natural materials and the lack of manipulating method of excitonic condensation. In this paper, we report the realization of a doping-controlled EI-to-semi-metal transition in Ta$_2$NiSe$_5$ using $in$-$situ$ potassium deposition. Combining with ang…
Nowadays it has become feasible to perform angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements of transition-metal oxides with three-dimensional perovskite structures owing to the availability of high-quality single crystals of bulk and epitaxial thin films. In this article, we review recent experimental results and interpretation of ARPES data using empirical tight-binding band-structure calculations. Results are presented for SrVO$_3$ (SVO) bulk single crystals, and La$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$FeO$_3$ (LSFO) and La$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$MnO$_3$ (LSMO) thin films. In the case of SVO, from comparison of…
We have performed systematic tight-binding (TB) analyses of the angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) spectra of transition-metal (TM) oxides A$M$O$_3$ ($M=$ Ti, V, Mn, and Fe) with the perovskite-type structure and compared the obtained parameters with those obtained from configuration-interaction (CI) cluster-model analyses of photoemission spectra. The values of $ε_d-ε_p$ from ARPES are found to be similar to the charge-transfer energy $Δ$ from O $2p$ orbitals to empty TM 3d orbitals and much larger than $Δ-U/2$ ($U$: on-site Coulomb energy) expected for Mott-Hubbard-type compou…

An excitonic insulator phase is expected to arise from the spontaneous formation of electron-hole pairs (excitons) in semiconductors where the exciton binding energy exceeds the size of the electronic band gap. At low temperature, these ground state excitons stabilize a new phase by condensing at lower energy than the electrons at the valence band top, thereby widening the electronic band gap. The envisioned opportunity to explore many-boson phenomena in an excitonic insulator system is triggering a very active debate on how ground state excitons can be experimentally evidenced. Here, we emplo…
Photo-induced phase transitions have been intensively studied owing to the ability to control a material of interest in the ultrafast manner, which can induce exotic phases unable to be attained at equilibrium. However, the key mechanisms are still under debate, and it has currently been a central issue how the couplings between the electron, lattice, and spin degrees of freedom are evolving during photo-induced phase transitions. Here, we develop a new analysis method, frequency-domain angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, to gain precise insight into electron-phonon couplings during pho…
The electronic structure of pulsed laser deposited Mo1-xFexO2 (x=0, 0.02 and 0.05) thin films has been investigated using resonant photoemission spectroscopy near Mo-4p absorption edge. In all the samples a broad Fano- like resonance peak at ~46 eV is observed in the whole area of the valence band which indicates the contribution of the Mo-4d states in the entire valence band region. The doping of Fe in these films leads to decrease in Mo 4d states contributing to electronic states at lower binding energy region. In addition to this, we also observe a shoulder at 4.9 eV in the valence band spe…
We have studied the O 2p valence-band structure of Nb-doped SrTiO3, in which a dilute concentration of electrons are doped into the d0 band insulator, by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements. We found that ARPES spectra at the valence band maxima at the M [k = (pi/a, pi/a, 0)]and R [k = (pi/a, pi/a, pi/a)] points start from ~ 3.3 eV below the Fermi level (EF), consistent with the indirect band gap of 3.3 eV and the EF position at the bottom of the conduction band. The peak position of the ARPES spectra were, however, shifted toward higher binding energies by ~ 500 meV…
Recently, angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) has revealed a dispersion anomaly at high binding energy near 0.3-0.5eV in various families of the high-temperature superconductors. For further studies of this anomaly we present a new two-dimensional fitting-scheme and apply it to high-statistics ARPES data of the strongly-overdoped Bi2Sr2CuO6 cuprate superconductor. The procedure allows us to extract theself-energy in an extended energy and momentum range. It is found that the spectral function of Bi2Sr2CuO6 can be parameterized using a small set of tight-binding parameters and a w…
Angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy is used for a detailed study of the electronic structure of the topological insulator Bi2Se3. Nominally stoichiometric and calcium-doped samples were investigated. The pristine surface shows the topological surface state in the bulk band gap. As time passes, the Dirac point moves to higher binding energies, indicating an increasingly strong downward bending of the bands near the surface. This time-dependent band bending is related to a contamination of the surface and can be accelerated by intentionally exposing the surface to carbon monoxide and other…
Angle-resolved photoemission measurements on the electron-doped cuprate Sm(1.85)Ce(0.15)CuO(4) evidence anisotropic dressing of charge-carriers due to many-body interactions. Most significantly, the scattering rate along the zone boundary saturates for binding energies larger than ~200 meV, while along the diagonal direction it increases nearly linearly with the binding energy in the energy range ~150-500 meV. These results indicate that many-body interactions along the diagonal direction are strong down to the bottom of the band, while along the zone-bounday they become very weak at energies …
Layered tellurides have been extensively studied as a platform for investigating the Fermi surface (FS) nesting-driven charge density wave (CDW) states. EuTe4, one of quasi-two-dimensional (quasi-2D) binary rare-earth tetratellurides CDW compounds, with unconventional hysteretic transition, is currently receiving much attention. Here, the CDW modulation vector, momentum and temperature dependence of CDW gaps in EuTe4 are investigated using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. Our results reveal that (i) a FS nesting vector q ~ 0.67 b* drives the formation of CDW state, (ii) a large aniso…
We have elucidated the nature of the electron correlation effect in uranium compounds by imaging the partial $\mathrm{U}~5f$ density of states (pDOS) of typical itinerant, localized, and heavy fermion uranium compounds by using the $\mathrm{U}~4d-5f$ resonant photoemission spectroscopy. Obtained $\mathrm{U}~5f$ pDOS exhibit a systematic trend depending on the physical properties of compounds. The coherent peak at the Fermi level can be described by the band-structure calculation, but an incoherent peak emerges on the higher binding energy side ($\lesssim 1~\mathrm{eV}$) in the \Uf pDOS of loca…
We studied the electronic band structure of pulsed laser deposition (PLD) grown (111)-oriented SrRuO$_3$ (SRO) thin films using \textit{in situ} angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) technique. We observed previously unreported, light bands with a renormalized quasiparticle effective mass of about 0.8$m_{e}$. The electron-phonon coupling underlying this mass renormalization yields a characteristic "kink" in the band dispersion. The self-energy analysis using the Einstein model suggests five optical phonon modes covering an energy range 44 to 90 meV contribute to the coupling. Besid…
We derive an S=1 spin polaron model which describes the motion of a single hole introduced into the S=1 spin antiferromagnetic ground state of Ca2RuO4. We solve the model using the self-consistent Born approximation and show that its hole spectral function qualitatively agrees with the experimentally observed high-binding energy part of the Ca2RuO4 photoemission spectrum. We explain the observed peculiarities of the photoemission spectrum by linking them to two anisotropies present in the employed model---the spin anisotropy and the hopping anisotropy. We verify that these anisotropies, and no…
For certain conditions of layer thickness, the interface between GdTiO$_3$ (GTO) and SrTiO$_3$ (STO) in multilayer samples has been found to form a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) with very interesting properties including high mobilities and ferromagnetism. We have here studied two trilayer samples of the form [2 nm GTO/1.0 or 1.5 unit cells STO/10 nm GTO] as grown on (001) (LaAlO$_3$)$_{0.3}$(Sr$_2$AlTaO$_6$)$_{0.7}$ (LSAT), with the STO layer thicknesses being at what has been suggested is the critical thickness for 2DEG formation. We have studied these with Ti-resonant angle-resolved (…
We have investigated the electronic structure of A-site ordered CaCu$_3$Ti$_4$O$_{12}$ as a function of temperature by using angle-integrated and -resolved photoemission spectroscopies. Intrinsic changes of the electronic structure have been successfully observed in the valence band region by the careful consideration of charging effects. The obtained photoemission results have revealed that the intensity of the nearly non-dispersive Cu 3$d$-O 2$p$ hybridized bands at the binding energy of $\sim$2 eV increases with decreasing temperature from 300 to 120 K. This suggests that the density of the…
Resonant valence-band X-ray photoelectron spectra (ResPES) excited near 2p$_{3/2}$ core level energies, 2p X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS) and L$_{3,2}$ X-ray absorption spectra (XAS) of Ti and Mn in single crystal of 1T-Mn$_2$TiSe$_2$ were studied for the first time. The ionic-covalent character of bonds formed by Mn atoms with the neighboring Se atoms in the octahedral coordination is established. From the XPS and XAS measurements compared with results of atomic multiplet calculations of Ti and Mn L$_{3,2}$ XAS it is found that Ti atoms are in ionic state of 4+ and Mn atoms are in the stat…
We have studied the electronic structure of epitaxially grown thin films of La$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$FeO$_3$ by {\it in-situ} photoemission spectroscopy (PES) and x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) measurements. The Fe 2$p$ and valence-band PES spectra and the O $1s$ XAS spectra of LaFeO$_3$ have been successfully reproduced by configuration-interaction cluster-model calculation and, except for the satellite structure, by band-structure calculation. From the shift of the binding energies of core levels, the chemical potential was found to be shifted downward as $x$ was increased. Among the three peaks …
The connection between the Fermi surface and charge-density wave (CDW) order is revisited in 2H-TaSe2. Using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, ab initio band structure calculations, and an accurate tight-binding model, we develop the empirical k-resolved susceptibility function, which we use to highlight states that contribute to the susceptibility for a particular q-vector. We show that although the Fermi surface is involved in the peaks in the susceptibility associated with CDW order, it is not through conventional Fermi surface nesting, but rather through finite energy transitions …
We have performed an in situ angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) on single-crystal surfaces of La$_{0.6}$Sr$_{0.4}$MnO$_{3}$ (LSMO) thin films grown on SrTiO$_{3}$ (001) substrates by laser molecular beam epitaxy, and investigated the electronic structure near the Fermi level ($E_{F}$). The experimental results were compared with the band-structure calculation based on LDA + $U$. The band structure of LSMO thin films consists of several highly dispersive O 2$p$ derived bands in the binding energy range of 2.0 - 6.0 eV and Mn 3$d$ derived bands near $E_{F}$. ARPES spectra around t…
Hexagonal FeSe thin films were grown on SrTiO3 substrates and the temperature and thickness dependence of their electronic structures were studied. The hexagonal FeSe is found to be metallic and electron doped, whose Fermi surface consists of six elliptical electron pockets. With decreased temperature, parts of the bands shift downward to high binding energy while some bands shift upwards to EF. The shifts of these bands begin around 300 K and saturate at low temperature, indicating a magnetic phase transition temperature of about 300 K. With increased film thickness, the Fermi surface topolog…
Super-high resolution laser-based angle-resolved photoemission measurements have been performed on a high temperature superconductor Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_8. The band back-bending characteristic of the Bogoliubov-like quasiparticle dispersion is clearly revealed at low temperature in the superconducting state. This makes it possible for the first time to experimentally extract the complex electron self-energy and the complex gap function in the superconducting state. The resultant electron self-energy and gap function exhibit features at ~54 meV and ~40 meV, in addition to the superconducting gap-in…
High resolution angle-resolved photoemission measurements have been carried out on transition metal dichalcogenide PdTe2 that is a superconductor with a Tc at 1.7 K. Combined with theoretical calculations, we have discovered for the first time the existence of topologically nontrivial surface state with Dirac cone in PbTe2 superconductor. It is located at the Brillouin zone center and possesses helical spin texture. Distinct from the usual three-dimensional topological insulators where the Dirac cone of the surface state lies at the Fermi level, the Dirac point of the surface state in PdTe2 li…
The electronic structure of the new superconductor, SmO$_{1-x}$F$_x$FeAs ($x=0.15$), has been studied by angle-integrated photoemission spectroscopy. Our data show a sharp feature very close to the Fermi energy, and a relative flat distribution of the density of states between 0.5 eV and 3 eV binding energy, which agrees best with band structure calculations considering an antiferromagnetic ground state. No noticeable gap opening was observed at 12 Kelvin below the superconducting transition temperature, indicating the existence of large ungapped regions in the Brillouin zone.
The quasiparticle dynamics of electrons in a magnetically ordered state is investigated by high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission of Ni(110) at 10 K. The self-energy is extracted for high binding energies reaching up to 500 meV, using a Gutzwiller calculation as a reference frame for correlated quasiparticles. Significant deviations exist in the 300 meV range, as identified on magnetic bulk bands for the first time. The discrepancy is strikingly well described by a self-energy model assuming interactions with spin excitations. Implications relating to different electron-electron correlat…
We have performed an angle-resolved photoemission study of the electron-doped high-Tc superconductors (HTSCs) Sm_{1.85}Ce_{0.15}CuO_{4} (SCCO) and Eu_{1.85}Ce_{0.15}CuO_{4} (ECCO). Around the nodal point (pi/2, pi/2), we observed an energy gap at the Fermi level (EF) for both samples, resulting from the strong effects of antiferromagnetism. The magnitude of this gap in ECCO is larger than that in SCCO, implying that the effects of antiferromagnetism in ECCO are stronger than that in SCCO. Also, we quantitatively confirmed the effects of antiferromagnetism by the band dispersions to tight-bindi…
Electronic properties of V$_2$OPO$_4$ have been investigated by means of hard x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (HAXPES) and subsequent theoretical calculations. The V 1$s$ and 2$p$ HAXPES spectra are consistent with the charge ordering of V$^{2+}$ and V$^{3+}$. The binding energy difference between the V$^{2+}$ and V$^{3+}$ components is unexpectedly large indicating large bonding-antibonding splitting between them in the final states of core level photoemission. The V 1$s$ HAXPES spectrum exhibits a charge transfer satellite which can be analyzed by configuration interaction calculations on a…
GdNi is a ferrimagnetic material with a Curie temperature Tc = 69 K which exhibits a large magnetocaloric effect, making it useful for magnetic refrigerator applications. We investigate the electronic structure of GdNi by carrying out x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) at T = 25 K in the ferrimagnetic phase. We analyze the Gd M$_{4,5}$-edge ($3d$ - $4f$) and Ni L$_{2,3}$-edge ($2p$ - $3d$) spectra using atomic multiplet and cluster model calculations, respectively. The atomic multiplet calculation for Gd M$_{4,5}$-edge XAS indicates that Gd is triv…
It is shown that spectral functions within the extended t-J model, evaluated using the finite-temperature diagonalization of small clusters, exhibit the high-energy kink in single-particle dispersion consistent with recent angle-resolved photoemission results on hole-doped cuprates. The kink and waterfall-like features persist up to large doping and to temperatures beyond $J$ hence the origin can be generally attributed to strong correlations and incoherent hole propagation at large binding energies. In contrast, our analysis predicts that electron-doped cuprates do not exhibit these phenomena…
We present a comprehensive study of the photon energy dependence of the valence band photoemission yield in the prototype Mott-Hubbard oxide V2O3. The analysis of our experimental results, covering an extended photon energy range (20-6000 eV) and combined with GW calculations, allow us to identify the nature of the orbitals contributing to the total spectral weight at different binding energies, and in particular to locate the V 4s at about 8 eV binding energy. From this comparative analysis we can conclude that the intensity of the quasiparticle photoemission peak, observed close to the Fermi…
High-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) data reveal evidence of a crossover from one-dimensional (1D) to three-dimensional (3D) behavior in the prototypical charge density wave (CDW) material NbSe3. In the low-temperature 3D regime, gaps in the electronic structure are observed due to two incommensurate CDWs, in agreement with x-ray diffraction and electronic-structure calculations. At higher temperatures we observe a spectral weight depletion that approaches the power-law behavior expected in 1D. From the warping of the quasi-1D Fermi surface at low temperatures, we …
Using exact numerical techniques we investigate the nature of excitonic (electron-hole) bound states and the development of exciton coherence in the one-dimensional half-filled extended Falicov-Kimball model. The ground-state phase diagram of the model exhibits, besides band insulator and staggered orbital ordered phases, an excitonic insulator (EI) with power-law correlations. The criticality of the EI state shows up in the von Neumann entropy. The anomalous spectral function and condensation amplitude provide the binding energy and coherence length of the electron-hole pairs which, on their …
In the normal state of the high temperature superconductors Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_{8+delta} and La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_4, and in the related ``stripe ordered'' material La_1.25Nd_0.6Sr_0.15CuO_4, there is sharp structure in the measured single hole spectral function A(k,w) considered as a function of k at fixed small binding energy w. At the same time, as a function of w at fixed k on much of the putative Fermi surface, any structure in A(k,w), other than the Fermi cutoff, is very broad. This is characteristic of the situation in which there are no stable excitations with the quantum numbers of the elect…
Recently, angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy has been used to highlight an anomalously large band renormalization at high binding energies in cuprate superconductors: the high energy "waterfall" or high energy anomaly (HEA). The anomaly is present for both hole- and electron-doped cuprates as well as the half-filled parent insulators with different energy scales arising on either side of the phase diagram. While photoemission matrix elements clearly play a role in changing the aesthetic appearance of the band dispersion, i.e. creating a "waterfall"-like appearance, they provide an inade…
Using time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we study the response of metallic single layer TaS$_2$ in the 1H structural modification to the generation of excited carriers by a femtosecond laser pulse. A complex interplay of band structure modifications and electronic temperature increase is observed and analyzed by direct fits of model spectral functions to the two-dimensional (energy and $k$-dependent) photoemission data. Upon excitation, the partially occupied valence band is found to shift to higher binding energies by up to 150 meV, accompanied by electronic temperatures exc…
We report bulk-sensitive hard X-ray ($hν$ = 5.95 KeV) core level photoemission spectroscopy (PES) of single crystal V$_{1.98}$Cr$_{0.02}$O$_{3}$ and the high-$T_c$ cuprate Bi$_2$Sr$_{2}$CaCu$_{2}$O$_{8+δ}$ (Bi2212). V$_{1.98}$Cr$_{0.02}$O$_{3}$ exhibits low binding energy "satellites" to the V $2p$ "main lines" in the metallic phase, which are suppressed in the antiferromagnetic insulator phase. In contrast, the Cu $2p$ spectra of Bi2212 do not show temperature dependent features, but a comparison with soft X-ray PES indicates a large increase in the $2p^5 3d^9$ "satellites" or $3d^9$ weight i…
Angle resolved photoelectron spectroscopic measurements have been performed on an insulating cuprate Ca_2CuO_2Cl_2. High resolution data taken along the Γto (pi,pi) cut show an additional dispersive feature that merges with the known dispersion of the lowest binding energy feature, which follows the usual strongly renormalized dispersion of ~0.35 eV. This higher energy part reveals a dispersion that is very close to the unrenormalized band predicted by band theory. A transfer of spectral weight from the low energy feature to the high energy feature is observed as the Γpoint is approached. By c…
The gap anisotropy in Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ is revisited in the framework of a d-wave scenario in view of the recent angle-resolved photoemission experiment. Based on a tight-binding fit to the normal state dispersion, a detail analysis on the effects of the inclusion of the next harmonic in the d-wave has been presented. Significant effect has been observed in the superconducting T$_c$. The density of states is linear at the nodes with enhanced weight, caused by a marked increase in the low energy excitaions which affect the thermodynamics considerably. The slope of the $ρ_s - T$ curv…
Hybridization between $f$ electrons and conduction bands ($c$-$f$ hybridization) is a driving force for many unusual phenomena. To provide insight into it, systematic studies of CeCoIn$_5$ heavy fermion superconductor have been performed by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) in a large angular range at temperature of $T=6$ K. The used photon energy of 122 eV corresponds to Ce $4d$-$4f$ resonance. Calculations carried out with relativistic multiple scattering Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker method and one-step model of photoemission yielded realistic simulation of the ARPES spectra indica…
We have investigated the lowest binding-energy electronic structure of the model cuprate Sr_2CuO_2Cl_2 using angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). Our data from about 80 cleavages of Sr_2CuO_2Cl_2 single crystals give a comprehensive, self-consistent picture of the nature of the first electron-removal state in this model undoped CuO_2-plane cuprate. Firstly, we show a strong dependence on the polarization of the excitation light which is understandable in the context of the matrix element governing the photoemission process, which gives a state with the symmetry of a Zhang-Rice si…
We have analyzed the quasiparticle dispersion and ARPES-spectral density for Sr2CuO2Cl2 and Ca2CuO2Cl2 antiferromagnetic insulators along basic symmetric directions of the Brillouin zone (BZ) in a framework of an extended tight binding method (ETBM) with explicit account for intracell strong electron correlations. The quasiparticle dispersion is in a good agreement with ARPES- data. At the top of valence band we found a narrow impurity-like virtual level with the spectral weight proportional to the concentration of spin fluctuations. A pseudogap between the virtual level and the top of the val…
The $(π,π)$ shadow band (SB) in La-based cuprate family (La214) was studied by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) over a wide doping range from $x=0.01$ to $x=0.25$. Unlike the well-studied case of the Bi-based cuprate family, an overall strong, monotonic doping dependence of the SB intensity at the Fermi level ($E_F$) was observed. In contrast to a previous report for the presence of the SB only close to $x=1/8$, we found it exists in a wide doping range, associated with a doping-independent $(π,π)$ wave vector but strongly doping-dependent intensity: It is the strongest at $x\…
We report high resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) studies of the electronic structure of BaFe$_2$As$_2$, which is one of the parent compounds of the Fe-pnictide superconductors. ARPES measurements have been performed at 20 K and 300 K, corresponding to the orthorhombic antiferromagnetic phase and the tetragonal paramagnetic phase, respectively. Photon energies between 30 and 175 eV and polarizations parallel and perpendicular to the scattering plane have been used. Measurements of the Fermi surface yield two hole pockets at the $Γ$-point and an electron pocket at each…
The electronic structure of LaOFeAs, a parent compound of iron-arsenic superconductors, is studied by angleresolved photoemission spectroscopy. By examining its dependence on photon energy, polarization, sodium dosing and the counting of Fermi surface volume, both the bulk and the surface contributions are identified. We find that a bulk band moves toward high binding energies below structural transition, and shifts smoothly across the spin density wave transition by about 25 meV. Our data suggest the band reconstruction may play a crucial role in the spin density wave transition, and the stru…
We revisit charge density wave (CDW) behavior in the archetypal quasi-one-dimensional (quasi-1D) material NbSe$_3$ by high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements utilizing a microfocused laser with a photon energy of 6.3 eV. We present a detailed view of the electronic structure of this complex multiband system and unambiguously resolve CDW gaps at the Fermi level ($E_F$). By employing a tight-binding model, we argue that these gaps are the result of interband coupling between electronic states that reside predominantly on distinct 1D chains within the material. Two …

Using high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy we have studied the momentum and photon energy dependence of the anomalous high-energy dispersion, termed "waterfalls", between the Fermi level and 1 eV binding energy in several high-Tc superconductors. We observe strong changes of the dispersion between different Brillouin zones and a strong dependence on the photon energy around 75 eV, which we associate with the resonant photoemission at the Cu 3p3d_{x^2-y^2} edge. We conclude that the high-energy "waterfall" dispersion results from a strong suppression of the photoemission in…
