The electronic structure of pulsed laser deposited Mo1-xFexO2 (x=0, 0.02 and 0.05) thin films has been investigated using resonant photoemission spectroscopy near Mo-4p absorption edge. In all the samples a broad Fano- like resonance peak at ~46 eV is observed in the whole area of the valence band which indicates the contribution of the Mo-4d states in the entire valence band region. The doping of Fe in these films leads to decrease in Mo 4d states contributing to electronic states at lower binding energy region. In addition to this, we also observe a shoulder at 4.9 eV in the valence band spectra of doped samples. It is proposed that the origin of this shoulder is due to the Fe hybridised states.
We have performed an angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy study of La$_{0.6}$Sr$_{0.4}$FeO$_3$ using {\it in situ} prepared thin films and determined its band structure. The experimental band dispersions could be well explained by an empirical band structure assuming the G-type antiferromagnetic state. However, the Fe 3d bands were found to be shifted downward relative to the Fermi level ($E_F$) by $\sim 1$ eV compared with the calculation and to form a (pseudo)gap of $\sim 1$ eV at $E_F$. We attribute this observation to a strong localization effect of doped holes due to polaron formatio…
The spectral properties of La$_{1-x}$Sr$_{x}$TiO$_{3}$, a doped Mott insulator with strong Coulomb correlations, are calculated with the ab initio computational scheme LDA+DMFT(QMC). It starts from the non-interacting electronic band structure as calculated by the local density approximation (LDA), and introduces the missing correlations by the dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT), using numerically exact quantum Monte-Carlo (QMC) techniques to solve the resulting self-consistent multi-band single-impurity problem. The results of the LDA+DMFT(QMC) approach for the photoemission spectra of La$_{1…
We have used resonant photoemission with circular polarized light as a new tool to obtain information about the electronic structure of half-metals. After careful sample surface preparation of La0.7Sr0.3MnO3, we have obtained a dichroic signal for the L2,3 absorption of Mn. Working with a magnetized sample and circular polarized light we observe a clear effect of the helicity of light on the position of the resonant Raman-Auger photoelectrons from the Mn 2p3p3d decay. These results allow us to achieve a rough estimate of the half-metallic spin half-gap.
We have performed an angle-resolved photoemission study on untwinned PrBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_7$, which has low resistivity but does not show superconductivity. We have observed a dispersive feature with a band maximum around ($π$/2,$π$/2), indicating that this band is derived from the undoped CuO$_2$ plane. We have observed another dispersive band exhibiting one-dimensional character, which we attribute to signals from the doped CuO$_3$ chain. The overall band dispersion of the one-dimensional band agrees with the prediction of $t-J$ model calculation with parameters relevant to cuprates except that …
Iron resonant valance band photoemission spectra of Sr substituted LaFe0.75Ni0.25 O3-δ have been recorded across the Fe 2p - 3d absorption threshold to obtain Fe specific spectral information on the 3d projected partial density of states. Comparison with La1-xSrxFeO3 resonant VB PES literature data suggests that substitution of Fe by Ni forms electron holes which are mainly O 2p character. Substitution of La by Sr increases the hole concentration to an extent that the eg structure vanishes. The variation of the eg and t2g structures is paralleled by the changes in the electrical conductivity.
Angle-resolved valence-band resonant photoemission of nickel metal has been measured close to the 2p core-level thresholds with synchrotron radiation. The well-known 6-eV correlation satellite has an intensity enhancement of about two orders of magnitude at resonance. The angular dependence of the photoemission intensity has been studied as function of photon energy and provides unambiguous evidence for interference effects all the way up to the resonance maximum. The observation of different angular asymmetries, β, for the valence band and the satellite is discussed in connection to the origi…
A first principles approach, based on the real space multiple scattering Green's function method, is presented for spin- and angle-resolved resonant photoemission from magnetic surfaces. It is applied to the Fe(010) valence band photoemission excited with circularly polarized X-rays around the Fe L3 absorption edge. When the photon energy is swept through the Fe 2p-3d resonance, the valence band spectra are strongly modified in terms of absolute and relative peak intensities, degree of spin-polarization and light polarization dependence. New peaks in the spin-polarized spectra are identified a…
Ge$_{1-x}$Fe$_{x}$ (Ge:Fe) shows ferromagnetic behavior up to a relatively high temperature of 210 K, and hence is a promising material for spintronic applications compatible with Si technology. We have studied its electronic structure by soft x-ray angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (SX-ARPES) measurements in order to elucidate the mechanism of the ferromagnetism. We observed finite Fe 3$d$ components in the states at the Fermi level ($E_{F}$) in a wide region in momentum space and $E_{F}$ was located above the valence-band maximum (VBM). First-principles supercell calculation also sug…
The electron-phonon coupling in potassium-doped graphene on Ir(111) is studied via the renormalization of the pi* band near the Fermi level, using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. The renormalization is found to be fairly weak and almost isotropic, with a mass enhancement parameter of lambda= 0.28(6) for both the K-M and the K-G direction. These results are found to agree well with recent first principles calculations.
We study the superconducting(SC)-gap anisotropy of the Γ-centered hole Fermi surface in optimally doped FeTe_{0.6}Se_{0.4} (T_c = 14.5 K), using laser-excited angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). We observe sharp superconducting coherence peaks at T = 2.5 K. In contrast to earlier ARPES studies but consistent with thermodynamic results, the momentum dependence shows a \cos(4φ) modulation of the SC-gap anisotropy. The observed SC-gap anisotropy strongly indicates that the pairing interaction is not a conventional phonon-mediated isotropic one. Instead, the results suggest the impo…
We explore the effects of disordered charged defects on the electronic excitations observed in the photoemission spectra of doped transition metal oxides in the Mott insulating regime by the example of the $R_{1-x}$Ca$_x$VO$_3$ perovskites, where $R=$La,$\dots$,Lu. A fundamental characteristic of these vanadium $d^2$ compounds with partly filled $t_{2g}$ valence orbitals is the persistence of spin and orbital order up to high doping, in contrast to the loss of magnetic order in high-$T_c$ cuprates at low defect concentration. We demonstrate that the disordered electronic structure of doped Mot…
We calculate the photoemission spectra of suspended and epitaxial doped graphene using an ab initio cumulant expansion of the Green's function based on the GW self-energy. Our results are compared to experiment and to standard GW calculations. For doped graphene on a silicon carbide substrate, we find, in contrast to earlier calculations, that the spectral function from GW only does not reproduce experimental satellite properties. However, ab initio GW plus cumulant theory combined with an accurate description of the substrate screening results in good agreement with experiment, but gives no p…
We study the mixed valence transition ($T$$_{v}$ $\sim$80 K) in EuNi$_{2}$(Si$_{0.2}$Ge$_{0.8}$)$_{2}$ using Eu 3$d-4f$ X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and resonant photoemission spectroscopy (RESPES). The Eu$^{2+}$ and Eu$^{3+}$ main peaks show a giant resonance and the spectral features match very well with atomic multiplet calculations. The spectra show dramatic temperature ($T$)-dependent changes over large energies ($\sim$10 eV) in RESPES and XAS. The observed non-integral mean valencies of $\sim$2.35 $\pm$ 0.03 ($T$ = 120 K) and $\sim$2.70 $\pm$ 0.03 ($T$ = 40 K) indicate homogeneous…
We combined photoelemission spectroscopy with first-principle calculations to investigate structural and electronic properties of SrTiO$_{3}$ doped with Ni impurities. In SrTiO$_{3}$ polycrystalline thin films, grown by magnetron sputtering, the mean size of the crystallites increases with the concentration of Ni. To determine the electronic band structure of SrTiO$_{3}$ films doped with Ni, high quality ordered pristine and SrTiO3:Ni$_{x}$ films with x=0.06 and 0.12 were prepared by pulsed laser deposition. Electronic band structure calculations for the ground state, as well as one-step model…
We report experimental observation of Kondo-Fano resonant tunneling in Si-doped GaAs/AlAs multiple quantum wells. The spectrum of differential tunneling conductance at low bias shows a strong temperature dependent resonance, whose peak is split in the presence of a magnetic field, characteristic of a Kondo resonance. The data is well explained as a resonant tunneling of conduction electrons at the Fermi level through the doped silicon impurity states inside the wells by using an impurity Anderson model. The Coulomb blockade resonance of the impurity states induces a Fano dip above the Kondo re…
Multiferroic bismuth ferrite (BiFeO3) thin films were prepared by pulsed laser deposition (PLD) technique. Electronic structures of the film have been studied by in situ photoemission spectroscopy (PES) and x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). Both the Fe 2p PES and XAS spectra show that Fe ion is formally in +3 valence state. The Fe 2p and O K edge XAS spectra indicate that the oxygen octahedral crystal ligand field splits the unoccupied Fe 3d state to t2g and eg states. Valence band Fe 2p-3d resonant photoemission results indicate that hybridization between Fe 3d and O 2p plays important rol…
We have studied the O 2p valence-band structure of Nb-doped SrTiO3, in which a dilute concentration of electrons are doped into the d0 band insulator, by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements. We found that ARPES spectra at the valence band maxima at the M [k = (pi/a, pi/a, 0)]and R [k = (pi/a, pi/a, pi/a)] points start from ~ 3.3 eV below the Fermi level (EF), consistent with the indirect band gap of 3.3 eV and the EF position at the bottom of the conduction band. The peak position of the ARPES spectra were, however, shifted toward higher binding energies by ~ 500 meV…
We analyze the effect of electron-phonon coupling on photoemission properties and ultrafast response of doped monolayer MoS2. The analysis is based on combined DFT and many-body (Eliashberg theory) approaches. In particular, we have calculated the electronic and phonon spectra, the electron-phonon coupling and the electronic spectral function of the system at different values of doping. We have also analyzed the emissive properties and the response of the system to femtosecond (fs) laser pulses. It is shown that position of the emission peak of undoped system is in agreement with the experimen…
In FeSe-derived superconductors, the lack of a systematic and clean control on the carrier concentration prevents the comprehensive understanding on the phase diagram and the interplay between different phases. Here by K dosing and angle resolved photoemission study on thick FeSe films and FeSe$_{0.93}$S$_{0.07}$ bulk crystals, the phase diagram of FeSe as a function of electron doping is established, which is extraordinarily different from other Fe-based superconductors. The correlation strength remarkably increases with increasing doping, while an insulting phase emerges in the heavily overd…
For certain conditions of layer thickness, the interface between GdTiO$_3$ (GTO) and SrTiO$_3$ (STO) in multilayer samples has been found to form a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) with very interesting properties including high mobilities and ferromagnetism. We have here studied two trilayer samples of the form [2 nm GTO/1.0 or 1.5 unit cells STO/10 nm GTO] as grown on (001) (LaAlO$_3$)$_{0.3}$(Sr$_2$AlTaO$_6$)$_{0.7}$ (LSAT), with the STO layer thicknesses being at what has been suggested is the critical thickness for 2DEG formation. We have studied these with Ti-resonant angle-resolved (…
An accurate description of spatial variations in the energy levels of patterned semiconductor substrates on the micron and sub-micron scale as a function of local doping is an important technological challenge for the microelectronics industry. Spatially resolved surface analysis by photoelectron spectromicroscopy can provide an invaluable contribution thanks to the relatively non-destructive, quantitative analysis. We present results on highly doped n and p type patterns on, respectively, p and n type silicon substrates. Using synchrotron radiation and spherical aberration-corrected energy fi…
Resonant valence-band X-ray photoelectron spectra (ResPES) excited near 2p$_{3/2}$ core level energies, 2p X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS) and L$_{3,2}$ X-ray absorption spectra (XAS) of Ti and Mn in single crystal of 1T-Mn$_2$TiSe$_2$ were studied for the first time. The ionic-covalent character of bonds formed by Mn atoms with the neighboring Se atoms in the octahedral coordination is established. From the XPS and XAS measurements compared with results of atomic multiplet calculations of Ti and Mn L$_{3,2}$ XAS it is found that Ti atoms are in ionic state of 4+ and Mn atoms are in the stat…
We have systematically investigated the structural property and electrical structures of the transition metal intercalated titanium disulfide compound Fe$_x$TiS$_2$ ($0\leq x\leq0.33$) from angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy with tunable polarized synchrotron radiation. The effect of intercalation on the energy bands and density of states of the host material around two high-symmetry points ($Γ, L$) is studied. Charge transfer from the Fe atoms to the dichalcogenide layers leads to the movement of the Ti 3d-derived electron pocket. Two hybridized states are observed around $\sim500$ meV…
Fe-doped III-V ferromagnetic semiconductors (FMSs) such as (In,Fe)As, (Ga,Fe)Sb, (In,Fe)Sb, and (Al,Fe)Sb are promising materials for spintronic device applications because of the availability of both n- and p-type materials and the high Curie temperatures. On the other hand, (Ga,Fe)As, which has the same zinc-blende crystal structure as the Fe-doped III-V FMSs, shows paramagnetism. The origin of the different magnetic properties in the Fe-doped III-V semiconductors remains to be elucidated. To address this issue, we use resonant photoemission spectroscopy (RPES) and x-ray magnetic circular di…
Epitaxial Ba0.5Sr0.5TiO3 thin films were prepared on Nb-doped SrTiO3 (100)substrates by the pulsed laser deposition technique, and were studied by measuring the Ti 2p - 3d resonant photoemission spectra in the valence-band region as a function of film thickness, both at room temperature and low temperature. Our results demonstrated an abrupt variation in the spectral structures between 2.8 nm (~7 monolayers) and 2.0 nm (~5 monolayers) Ba0.5Sr0.5TiO3 films, suggesting that there exists a critical thickness for phase change in the range of 2.0 nm to 2.8 nm. This may be ascribed mainly to the int…
Resonant photoemission spectroscopy has been used to investigate the character of Fe 3d states in FeAl alloy. Fe 3d states have two different character, first is of itinerant nature located very close to the Fermi level, and second, is of less itinerant (relatively localized character), located beyond 2 eV below the Fermi level. These distinct states are clearly distinguishable in the resonant photoemission data. Comparison between the results obtained from experiments and first principle based electronic structure calculation show that the origin of the itinerant character of the Fe 3d states…
Point defects in Ga- and Al-doped ZnO thin films are studied by means of first principles electronic structure calculations. Candidate defects are identified to explain recently observed differences in electrical and spectroscopical behavior of both systems. Substitutional doping in Ga-ZnO explain the metallic behavior of the electrical properties. Complexes of interstitial oxygen with substitutional Ga can behave as acceptor and cause partial compensation, as well as gap states below the conduction band minimum as observed in photoemission experiments. Zn vacancies can also act as compensatin…
In this work, the thermal transport properties of thorium dioxide (ThO$_2$, thoria) with low levels of substitutional uranium (U) doping are explored. We observe strong indications of resonant phonon scattering, an interaction between phonons and electronic degrees of freedom, induced by this doping in addition to common ``impurity'' scattering due to mass and interatomic force constant differences. Uranium doping levels of 6\%, 9\%, and 16\% were studied in a single hydrothermally synthesized U-doped thoria crystal with spatially-varying U doping levels. Within this crystal, isoconcentration …
Epitaxial thin films of Fe doped SrTiO3 have been studied by the use of resonant photoemission. This technique allowed to identify contributions of the Fe and Ti originating electronic states to the valence band. Two valence states of iron Fe2+ and Fe3+, detected on the base of XAS spectra, appeared to form quite different contributions to the valence band of SrTiO3. The electronic states within the in-gap region can be attributed to Fe2+, Fe3+ and Ti3+ ions. Fe2+ originating states which can be connected to the presence of oxygen vacancies form a broad band reaching binding energies of about …
We have performed an $in$-$situ$ depth profile study of Mn-doped GaN prepared by a low temperature thermal diffusion method using photoemission and x-ray absorption spectroscopy. It was revealed from the core-level photoemission measurements that Mn ions are diffused into a deep ($\sim$ 70 Å) region of the GaN substrates and that the line shapes of Mn 3$d$ partial density of states obtained by resonant photoemission measurements was close to that of Ga$_{1-x}$Mn$_x$N thin films grown by molecular-beam epitaxy. From x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD…
We demonstrated experimentally a direct way to probe a hidden propensity to the formation of spin density wave (SDW) in a non-magnetic metal with strong Fermi surface nesting. Substituting Fe for a tiny amount of Cu (1%) induced an incommensurate magnetic order below 20 K in heavily-overdoped La2-xSrxCuO4 (LSCO). Elastic neutron scattering suggested that this order cannot be ascribed to the localized spins on Cu or doped Fe. Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), combined with numerical calculations, revealed a strong Fermi surface nesting inherent in the pristine LSCO that likely …
Using a combination of {\it ab initio} bandstructure methods and dynamical mean-field theory we study the single-particle spectrum of the prototypical charge-transfer insulator NiO. Good agreement with photoemission and inverse-photoemission spectra is obtained for both stoichiometric and hole-doped systems. In spite of a large Ni-$d$ spectral weight at the top of the valence band the doped holes are found to occupy mainly the ligand $p$ orbitals. Moreover, high hole doping leads to a significant reconstruction of the single-particle spectrum accompanied by a filling of the correlation gap.
We have studied the chemical potential shift in La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$NiO$_4$ and the charge ordering transition in La$_{1.67}$Sr$_{0.33}$NiO$_4$ by photoemission spectroscopy. The result shows a large ($\sim$ 1 eV/hole) downward shift of the chemical potential with hole doping in the high-doping regime ($δ\gtrsim$ 0.33) while the shift is suppressed in the low-doping regime ($δ\lesssim$ 0.33). This suppression is attributed to a segregation of doped holes on a microscopic scale when the hole concentration is lower than $δ\simeq 1/3$. In the $δ= 1/3$ sample, the photoemission intensity at the chemic…
The bulk band structure of the topological insulator \sbte~ is investigated by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. Of particular interest is the dispersion of the uppermost valence band with respect to the topological surface state Dirac point. The valence band maximum has been calculated to be either near the Brillouin zone centre or in a low-symmetry position in the $\barΓ-\bar{M}$ azimuthal direction. In order to observe the full energy range of the valence band, the strongly p-doped crystals are counter-doped by surface alkali adsorption. The data show that that the absolute valence…
The structural, magnetotransport, and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) of Ag-doped Bi2Se3 single crystals are presented. Temperature dependent resistivity exhibits metallic behavior with a slope change above 200 K for Ag-doped Bi2Se3. The magnetoresistance shows positive quadratic dependence at low fields satisfying Kohler's rule. Hall resistivity measurement shows that electrons are dominant charge carriers. Furthermore, these results agree well with the ARPES spectra observed at T = 20 K, where the Fermi level lies inside the bulk conduction band. The Dirac point of the topo…
Perovskite alkaline earth stannates, such as $BaSnO_3$ and $SrSnO_3$, showing light transparency and high electrical conductivity (when doped), have become promising candidates for novel optoelectrical devices. Such devices are mostly based on hetero-structures and understanding of their electronic structure, which usually deviates from the bulk, is mandatory for exploring a full application potential. Employing angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and ab initio calculations we reveal the existence of a 2-dimensional metallic state at the $SnO_2$-terminated surface of a 1\% La-doped $BaSn…
We obtain analytical expressions for the electron self-energy and the electron-phonon coupling in electron-doped graphene using electron-phonon matrix elements extracted from density functional theory simulations. From the electron self-energies we calculate angle resolved photoemission spectra. We demonstrate that the measured kink at $\approx -0.2$ eV from the Fermi level is actually composed of two features, one at $\approx -0.195$ eV due to the twofold degenerate E$_{2g}$ mode, and a second one at $\approx -0.16$ eV due to the A$_{1}^{'}$ mode. The electron-phonon coupling extracted from t…
A recent, major, puzzle in the core-level photoemission spectra of doped manganites is the observation of a 1-2 eV wide shoulder with intensity varying with temperature T as the square of the magnetization over a T scale of order 200K, an order of magnitude less than electronic energies. This is addressed and resolved here, by extending a recently proposed two electron fluid l-b model for these systems to include core-hole effects. The shoulder arises from a rapid redistribution of e_g electron density, as a function of T, between the highly localized (l) and band-like (b) states. Furthermore,…
We present results of detailed study on the electron dispersions and Fermi surface of lead telluride doped with $2\%$ of thallium, which is resonant impurity in PbTe. Using the KKR--CPA method, Bloch spectral functions (BSFs), which replace the dispersion relations in alloys, are calculated, and BSFs intensity maps over the Brillouin zone (alloy Fermi surface cross-sections) are presented. It is shown, that close to the valence band edge, Tl does not create an isolated impurity band, but due to its resonant character, strongly disturbs the host electronic bands, leading to disappearance of sha…
Despite its potential in the fields of optoelectronics and topological insulators, experimental electronic band structure studies of Bi-doped GaAs are scarce. The reason is the complexity of growth which tends to leave bulk and in particular surface properties in an undefined state. Here we present an in depth investigation of structural and electronic properties of GaAsBi epilayers grown by molecular beam epitaxy with high (001) crystalline order and well-defined surface structures evident from low-energy electron diffraction. X-ray and ultraviolet photoemission spectrocopy as well as angle-r…
A theory of light propagation through one-dimensional photonic crystals and deterministic aperiodic structures, including quasicrystals, based on doped quantum-well structures has been developed. The resonant Bragg condition, leading to the superradiant regime and formation of the widest optical reflection spectrum, has been formulated. The expressions for band gap edges for light waves in the Bragg structures have been obtained. The reflection and absorption spectra of such systems are calculated. The optical properties of the doped multiple-quantum-well structure are compared with the proper…
The next-nearest neighbor interaction (NNN) is included in a tight-binding calculation of the electronic spectrum and conductivity of doped graphene. As a result, we observe a wide variation of the conductivity behavior, since the Fermi energy and the resonance peak are not shifted by the same amount. Such effect can have a profound effect in the idea of explaining the minimal conductivity of graphene as a consequence of impurities or defects. Finally, we also estimate the mean free path and relaxation time due to resonant impurity scattering.
The problem of localization of the resonant impurity states is discussed for an illustrative example of Titanium doped Lead Telluride. Electronic structure of PbTe:Ti is studied using first principles methods, densities of states and Bloch spectral functions are analyzed. We show that Ti creates resonant states in the conduction band of PbTe, however, spectral functions of the system strongly suggest localization of these states and show poor hybridization with PbTe electronic structure. The contrast between results presented here and previously reported spectral functions for PbTe:Tl correlat…
We performed an angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy study of Si-doped $β$-Ga$_2$O$_3$. We observed very small photoemission intensity near the Fermi level corresponding to non-dispersive states assigned to Si impurities. We show evidence for a quantization of these states that is accompanied by a confinement in the momentum space consistent with a real-space finite confinement observed in a previous scanning tunneling microscopy study. Our results suggest that this semi-localization in the conjugate spaces plays a crucial role in the electronic conduction of this material.
In this report, we identify the origin of the temperature dependence of the surface energy gap in impurity-doped topological insulators. The gap at the Dirac point and its variation with temperature were studied by using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy in Cr-doped Bi2Se3. Our valence band photoemission results revealed that the gap varies with temperature due to residual gas condensation on the sample surface with cooling. Adsorbate on the surface of the sample creates an electron doping effect that modifies the chemical potential of the system resulting in the change of the gap with…
We introduce a new method for determining accurate values of the valence-band maximum in x-ray photoemission spectra. Specifically, we align the sharpest peak in the valence-band region of the experimental spectrum with the corresponding feature of a theoretical valence-band density of states curve from ab initio GW theory calculations. This method is particularly useful for soft and hard x-ray photoemission studies of materials with a mixture of valence-band characters, where strong matrix element effects can render standard methods for extracting the valence-band maximum unreliable. We apply…
The high refractive index of ZnS (about 2.4 in the visible range) makes ZnS microstructures good candidates for the fabrication of light guides and resonant microcavities. Light guiding behaviour has been studied in several ZnS structures. In particular, in this work the behavior of rods and plates has been investigated and it is has been shown that the morphology of the studied structures plays a determinant role on the supported resonant modes. In ZnS:Ga and ZnS:In structures investigated in the present work Fabry-Perot as well as Whispering Gallery resonant modes are supported. A good agree…
Carrier doping by the electric field effect has emerged recently as an ideal route for monitoring many-body physics in two-dimensional (2D) materials where the Fermi level is tuned in a way that -- indirectly -- the strength of the interactions can also be scanned. The possibility of systematic doping in combination with high resolution photoemission has allowed to uncover a genuinely many-body electron spectrum in single-layer MoS2 transition metal dichalcogenide, resolving three clear quasi-particle states, where only one state should be expected if the electron-phonon interaction vanished. …
The electronic structure of the unoccupied and occupied states of potassium (K)-doped and undoped picene crystalline films has been investigated by using the element-selective and bulk-sensitive photon-detection methods of X-ray absorption and emission spectroscopies. We observed the formation of the doping-induced unoccupied and occupied electronic states in K-doped picene. By applying the inner-shell resonant-excitation experiments, we observed the evidence for the orbital hybridization between K and picene near the Fermi energy. Furthermore, the resonant X-ray emission experiment suggests t…
