We combined photoelemission spectroscopy with first-principle calculations to investigate structural and electronic properties of SrTiO$_{3}$ doped with Ni impurities. In SrTiO$_{3}$ polycrystalline thin films, grown by magnetron sputtering, the mean size of the crystallites increases with the concentration of Ni. To determine the electronic band structure of SrTiO$_{3}$ films doped with Ni, high quality ordered pristine and SrTiO3:Ni$_{x}$ films with x=0.06 and 0.12 were prepared by pulsed laser deposition. Electronic band structure calculations for the ground state, as well as one-step model photoemission calculations, which were obtained by means of the Korringa-Khon-Rostoker Greens's function method, predicted the formation of localised $3d$-impurity bands in the band gap of SrTiO$_{3}$ close to the valence band maxima. The measured valence bands at the resonance Ni2p excitation and band dispersion confirm these findings.
The surfaces of perovskite oxides affect their functional properties, and while a bulk-truncated (1$\times$1) termination is generally assumed, its existence and stability is controversial. Here, such a surface is created by cleaving the prototypical SrTiO$_3$(001) in ultra-high vacuum, and its response to thermal annealing is observed. Atomically resolved nc-AFM shows that intrinsic point defects on the as-cleaved surface migrate at temperatures above 200\,$^\circ$C. At 400--500\,$^\circ$C, a disordered surface layer forms, albeit still with a (1$\times$1) pattern in LEED. Purely TiO$_2$-term…
In this study, we report on investigations of the electronic structure of SrTiO$_3$ annealed at temperature ranging between 550 and 840$^\circ$C in an ultrahigh vacuum. Annealing induced oxygen vacancies (O$_{vac}$) impart considerable changes in the electronic structure of SrTiO$_3$. Using core-level photoemission spectroscopy, we have studied the chemical potential shift ($Δμ$) as a function of annealing temperature. The result shows that the chemical potential monotonously increases with electron doping in SrTiO$_{3-δ}$. The monotonous increase of the chemical potential rules out the existe…
We studied LaAlO3/SrTiO3 interfaces for varying LaAlO3 thickness by core-level photoemission spectroscopy. In Ti 2p spectra for conducting "n-type" interfaces, Ti3+ signals appeared, which were absent for insulating "p-type" interfaces. The Ti3+ signals increased with LaAlO3 thickness, but started well below the critical thickness of 4 unit cells for metallic transport. Core-level shifts with LaAlO3 thickness were much smaller than predicted by the polar catastrophe model. We attribute these observations to surface defects/adsorbates providing charges to the interface even below the critical t…
Epitaxial thin films of Fe doped SrTiO3 have been studied by the use of resonant photoemission. This technique allowed to identify contributions of the Fe and Ti originating electronic states to the valence band. Two valence states of iron Fe2+ and Fe3+, detected on the base of XAS spectra, appeared to form quite different contributions to the valence band of SrTiO3. The electronic states within the in-gap region can be attributed to Fe2+, Fe3+ and Ti3+ ions. Fe2+ originating states which can be connected to the presence of oxygen vacancies form a broad band reaching binding energies of about …
LaAlO$_{3}$ and NdGaO$_{3}$ thin films of different thickness have been grown by pulsed laser deposition on TiO$_2$-terminated SrTiO$_{3}$ single crystals and investigated by soft X-ray photoemission spectroscopy. The surface sensitivity of the measurements has been tuned by varying photon energy $hν$ and emission angle $Θ$. In contrast to the core levels of the other elements, the Sr $3d$ line shows an unexpected splitting for higher surface sensitivity, signaling the presence of a second strontium component. From our quantitative analysis we conclude that during the growth process Sr atoms d…
A set of LaAlO3/SrTiO3 (LAO-STO) interfaces has been probed by X-ray photoemission spectroscopy in order to contrast and compare the effects of LAO overlayer thickness and of the growth conditions on the electronic properties of these heterostructures. These effects are tracked by considering the band-offset and the density of Ti3+ states, respectively. It is shown that the dominant effects on the local electronic properties are determined by the O2 partial pressure during the growth. In particular, a low P(O2) yields Ti3+ states with higher density and lower binding energy as compared to the …
The recent observation of replica bands in single-layer FeSe/SrTiO$_3$ by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) has triggered intense discussions concerning the potential influence of the FeSe electrons coupling with substrate phonons on the superconducting transition temperature. Here we provide strong evidence that the replica bands observed in the single-layer FeSe/SrTiO$_3$ system and several other cases are largely due to the energy loss processes of the escaping photoelectron, resulted from the well-known strong coupling of external propagating electrons to Fuchs-Kliewer (F-K…
We have studied the O 2p valence-band structure of Nb-doped SrTiO3, in which a dilute concentration of electrons are doped into the d0 band insulator, by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements. We found that ARPES spectra at the valence band maxima at the M [k = (pi/a, pi/a, 0)]and R [k = (pi/a, pi/a, pi/a)] points start from ~ 3.3 eV below the Fermi level (EF), consistent with the indirect band gap of 3.3 eV and the EF position at the bottom of the conduction band. The peak position of the ARPES spectra were, however, shifted toward higher binding energies by ~ 500 meV…
The heterostructure consisting of the Mott insulator LaVO$_3$ and the band insulator SrTiO$_3$ is considered a promising candidate for future photovoltaic applications. Not only does the (direct) excitation gap of LaVO$_3$ match well the solar spectrum, but its correlated nature and predicted built-in potential, owing to the non-polar/polar interface when integrated with SrTiO$_3$, also offer remarkable advantages over conventional solar cells. However, experimental data beyond the observation of a thickness-dependent metal-insulator transition is scarce and a profound, microscopic understandi…
LaCrO$_3$ (LCO) / SrTiO$_3$ (STO) heterojunctions are intriguing due to a polar discontinuity along (001), two distinct and controllable interface structures [(LaO)$^+$/(TiO$_2$)$^0$ and (SrO)$^0$/(CrO$_2$)$^-$], and interface-induced polarization. In this study, we have used soft- and hard x-ray standing-wave excited photoemission spectroscopy (SW-XPS) to generate a quantitative determination of the elemental depth profiles and interface properties, band alignments, and the depth distribution of the interface-induced built-in potentials in the two constituent oxides. We observe an alternating…
We have studied the electronic structure at the heterointerface between the band insulators LaAlO$_3$ and SrTiO$_3$ using $in situ$ photoemission spectroscopy. Our experimental results clearly reveal the formation of a notched structure on the SrTiO$_3$ side due to band bending at the metallic LaAlO$_3$/TiO$_2$-SrTiO$_3$ interface. The structure, however, is absent at the insulating LaAlO$_3$/SrO-SrTiO$_3$ interface. The present results indicate that the metallic states originate not from the charge transfer through the interface on a short-range scale but from the accumulation of carriers on …
Depositing disordered Al on top of SrTiO$_3$ is a cheap and easy way to create a two-dimensional electron system in the SrTiO$_3$ surface layers. To facilitate future device applications we passivate the heterostructure by a disordered LaAlO$_3$ capping layer to study the electronic properties by complementary x-ray photoemission spectroscopy and transport measurements on the very same samples. We also tune the electronic interface properties by adjusting the oxygen pressure during film growth.
Interface structure at polar/non-polar interfaces has been shown to be a key factor in controlling emergent behavior in oxide heterostructures, including the LaFeO$_3$/$\textit{n}$-SrTiO$_3$ system. We demonstrate via high energy resolution x-ray photoemission that epitaxial LaFeO$_3$/$\textit{n}$-SrTiO$_3$ (001) heterojunctions engineered to have opposite interface polarities exhibit very similar band offsets and potential gradients within the LaFeO$_3$ films. However, differences in the potential gradient within the SrTiO$_3$ layer depending on polarity may promote hole diffusion into LaFeO$…
The authors report on the crystallographic orientation dependence of the Schottky properties for heterojunctions between a half-metallic ferromagnet La$_0.6$Sr$_0.4$MnO$_3$ (LSMO) and Nb-doped SrTiO3 semiconductor. The Schottky barrier height determined by in situ photoemission measurements is independent for the substrate orientations (001) and (110), while the magnetic properties of LSMO (110) films are more enhanced than for (001) films. These results suggest that the performance of magnetic devices based on ferromagnetic manganite is improved by using (110)-oriented substrates.
For certain conditions of layer thickness, the interface between GdTiO$_3$ (GTO) and SrTiO$_3$ (STO) in multilayer samples has been found to form a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) with very interesting properties including high mobilities and ferromagnetism. We have here studied two trilayer samples of the form [2 nm GTO/1.0 or 1.5 unit cells STO/10 nm GTO] as grown on (001) (LaAlO$_3$)$_{0.3}$(Sr$_2$AlTaO$_6$)$_{0.7}$ (LSAT), with the STO layer thicknesses being at what has been suggested is the critical thickness for 2DEG formation. We have studied these with Ti-resonant angle-resolved (…
We investigated how SrOx segregates on a Nb doped SrTiO3 (100) surface by in air annealing. Using atomic force and photoemission electron microscopes, we can directly visualize the morphology and the electronic phase changes with SrOx segregation. SrOx islands less than 2 micron meter in size and 1-5 unit cells thick nucleate first and grow in a labyrinth domain pattern. After prolonged annealing, SrOx forms a ~10 nm thick film. We show that the domain pattern can be controlled by introducing a surface miscut angle of SrTiO3. Additionally, the segregated SrOx has a lower work function, compare…
Antiphase domain boundaries (APDBs) in the ($n \times 1$)($n=4,5$) reconstructions of the SrTiO$_3$(110) surface were studied with scanning tunneling microscopy, x-ray photoemission spectroscopy, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Two types of APDBs form on each reconstruction; they consist of Ti$_x$O$_y$ vacancy clusters with a specific stoichiometry. The presence of these clusters is controlled by the oxygen pressure during annealing. The structural models of the vacancy clusters are resolved with DFT, which also shows that their relative stability depends on the chemical pote…
Developing reliable methods for modulating the electronic structure of the two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) in SrTiO3 is crucial for utilizing its full potential and inducing novel properties. Here, we show that relatively simple surface preparation reconstructs the 2DEG of SrTiO3 (STO) surface, leading to a Lifshitz-like transition. Combining experimental methods, such as angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS) with ab initio calculations, we find that the modulation of the surface band structures is primarily attributed to the reorganiz…
We use photoemission spectroscopy to study electronic structures of pristine and K-doped solid picene. The valence band spectrum of pristine picene consists of three main features with no state at the Fermi level (EF), while that of K-doped picene has three structures similar to those of pristine picene with new states near EF, consistent with the semiconductor-metal transition. The K-induced change cannot be explained with a simple rigid-band model of pristine picene, but can be interpreted by molecular orbital calculations considering electron-intramolecular-vibration interaction. Excellent …
Nickel vapor-deposited on the SrTiO$_3$(110) surface was studied using scanning tunneling microscopy, photoemission spectroscopy (PES), and density functional theory calculations. This surface forms a (4 $\times$ 1) reconstruction, composed of a 2-D titania structure with periodic six- and ten-membered nanopores. Anchored at these nanopores, Ni single adatoms are stabilized at room temperature. PES measurements show that the Ni adatoms create an in-gap state located at 1.9 eV below the conduction band minimum and induce an upward band bending. Both experimental and theoretical results suggest …
The observation of replica bands by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy has ignited interest in the study of electron-phonon coupling at low carrier densities, particularly in monolayer FeSe/SrTiO$_3$, where the appearance of replica bands has motivated theoretical work suggesting that the interfacial coupling of electrons in the FeSe layer to optical phonons in the SrTiO$_3$ substrate might contribute to the enhanced superconducting pairing temperature. Alternatively, it has also been recently proposed that such replica bands might instead originate from extrinsic final state losses ass…
We have performed angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) experiments on the surface states of SrTiO$_3$(001) using linearly and circularly polarized light to investigate the subband structures of out-of-plane $d_{xz/yz}$ orbitals and chiral orbital angular momentum (OAM). The data taken in the first Brillouin zone reveal new subbands for $d_{xz/yz}$ orbitals with Fermi wave vectors of 0.25 and 0.45 $\mathrmÅ^{-1}$ in addition to the previously reported ones. As a result, there are at least two subbands for all the Ti 3d t$_{2g}$ orbitals. Our circular dichroism ARPES data is suggest…
The quasi-two-dimensional electronic gas at the (111) SrTiO$_3$-based heterostructure interfaces is described by a multi-band tight-binding model providing electronic bands in agreement at low energies with photoemission experiments. We analyze both the roles of the spin-orbit coupling and of the trigonal crystal field effects. We point out the presence of a regime with sizable strain where the band structure exhibits a Dirac cone whose features are consistent with \textit{ab-initio} approaches. The combined effect of spin-orbit coupling and trigonal strain gives rise to non-trivial spin and o…
X-ray standing wave (XSW) excited photoelectron emission was used to measure the site-specific valence band (VB) for 1/2 monolayer (ML) Pt grown on a SrTiO3 (001) surface. The XSW induced modulations in the core level (CL) and VB photoemission from the surface and substrate atoms were monitored for three hkl substrate Bragg reflections. The XSW CL analysis shows the Pt to have an fcc-like cube-on-cube epitaxy with the substrate. The XSW VB information compares well to a density functional theory calculated projected density of states from the surface and substrate atoms. Overall, this work rep…
Epitaxial Ba0.5Sr0.5TiO3 thin films were prepared on Nb-doped SrTiO3 (100)substrates by the pulsed laser deposition technique, and were studied by measuring the Ti 2p - 3d resonant photoemission spectra in the valence-band region as a function of film thickness, both at room temperature and low temperature. Our results demonstrated an abrupt variation in the spectral structures between 2.8 nm (~7 monolayers) and 2.0 nm (~5 monolayers) Ba0.5Sr0.5TiO3 films, suggesting that there exists a critical thickness for phase change in the range of 2.0 nm to 2.8 nm. This may be ascribed mainly to the int…
We present an angle-resolved photoemission study of the electronic band structure of the excitonic insulator Ta$_2$NiSe$_5$, as well as its evolution upon Sulfur doping. Our experimental data show that while the excitonic insulating phase is still preserved at a Sulfur-doping level of 25$\%$, such phase is heavily suppressed when there is a substantial amount, $\sim$ 50$\%$, of S-doping at liquid nitrogen temperatures. Moreover, our photon energy-dependent measurements reveal a clear three dimensionality of the electronic structure, both in Ta$_2$NiSe$_5$ and Ta$_2$Ni(Se$_{1-x}$S$_x$)$_5$ ($x=…
We report the temperature-dependent complex dielectric function of pristine bulk SrTiO$_3$ between 4.2 and 300 K within the energy range of 0.6-6.5 eV determined by spectroscopic ellipsometry. Fundamental indirect and direct band-gap energies have been extracted and are discussed with regard to existing state-of-the-art theoretical calculations. Furthermore, the dielectric function around the fundamental direct gap is analyzed by considering excitonic states. The excitonic effects, including the Coulomb enhancement of the continuum, are characterized using an extension of the Elliott's formula…
We have measured photoemission spectra of two kinds of TiO$_2$-capped VO$_2$ thin films, namely, that with rutile-type TiO$_2$ (r-TiO$_2$/VO$_2$) and that with amorphous TiO$_2$ (a-TiO$_2$/VO$_2$) capping layers. Below the Metal-insulator transition temperature of the VO$_2$ thin films, $\sim 300$ K, metallic states were not observed for the interfaces with TiO$_2$, in contrast with the interfaces between the band insulator SrTiO$_3$ and the Mott insulator LaTiO$_3$ in spite of the fact that both TiO$_2$ and SrTiO$_3$ are band insulators with $d^0$ electronic configurations and both VO$_2$ and…
The two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) at oxides interfaces and surfaces has attracted large attention in physics and research due to its unique electronic properties and possible application in optoelectronics and nanoelectronics. The origin of 2DEGes at oxide interfaces has been attributed to the well known "polar catastrophe" mechanism. On the other hand, recently a 2DEG was also found on a clean SrTiO3(001) surface where it is formed due to oxygen vacancies. However, these 2DEG systems have been until now found mostly on atomically perfect crystalline samples usually grown by pulsed laser…
We have investigated the effects of structure change and electron correlation on SrTiO$_{3}$ single crystals using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. We show that the cubic to tetragonal phase transition at 105$^\circ$K is manifested by a charge transfer from in-plane ($d_{yz}$ and $d_{zx}$) bands to out-of-plane ($d_{xy}$) band, which is opposite to the theoretical predictions. Along this second-order phase transition, we find a smooth evolution of the quasiparticle strength and effective masses. The in-plane band exhibits a peak-dip-hump lineshape, indicating a high degree of correla…
In thin film ferroelectric capacitor the chemical and electronic structure of the electrode/FE interface can play a crucial role in determining the kinetics of polarization switching. We investigate the electronic structure of a Pt/BaTiO3/SrTiO3:Nb capacitor using time-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. The chemical, electronic and depth sensitivity of core level photoemission is used to probe the transient response of different parts of the upper electrode/ferroelectric interface to voltage pulse induced polarization reversal. The linear response of the electronic structure agrees quantitat…
Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) is a powerful technique for the study of electronic structure, but it lacks a direct ability to study buried interfaces between two materials. We address this limitation by combining ARPES with soft x-ray standing-wave (SW) excitation (SWARPES), in which the SW profile is scanned through the depth of the sample. We have studied the buried interface in a prototypical magnetic tunnel junction La0.7Sr0.3MnO3/SrTiO3. Depth- and momentum-resolved maps of Mn 3d eg and t2g states from the central, bulk-like and interface-like regions of La0.7Sr0.3MnO3…
Using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we show that the recently-discovered surface state on SrTiO$_{3}$ consists of non-degenerate $t_{2g}$ states with different dimensional characters. While the $d_{xy}$ bands have quasi-2D dispersions with weak $k_{z}$ dependence, the lifted $d_{xz}$/$d_{yz}$ bands show 3D dispersions that differ significantly from bulk expectations and signal that electrons associated with those orbitals permeate the near-surface region. Like their more 2D counterparts, the size and character of the $d_{xz}$/$d_{yz}$ Fermi surface components are essentially the s…
We report the Meissner effect studies on an FeSe thin film grown on Nb doped SrTiO3 substrate by molecular beam epitaxy. Two-coil mutual inductance measurement clearly demonstrates the onset of diamagnetic screening at 65 K, which is consistent with the gap opening temperature determined by previous angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy results. The applied magnetic field causes a broadening of the superconducting transition near the onset temperature, which is the typical behavior for quasi-two-dimensional superconductors. Our results provide direct evidence that FeSe thin film grown on N…
The novel electronic properties emerging at interfaces between transition metal oxides, and in particular the discovery of conductivity in heterostructures composed of LaAlO$_3$ (LAO) and SrTiO$_3$ (STO) band insulators, have generated new challenges and opportunities in condensed matter physics. Although the interface conductivity is stabilized when LAO matches or exceeds a critical thickness of 4 unit cells (u.c.), other phenomena such as a universal metallic state found on the bare surface of STO single crystals and persistent photon-triggered conductivity in otherwise insulating STO-based …
We have measured the electronic structure of the two-dimensional electron system (2DES) found at the Al/SrTiO3 (Al/STO) and LaAlO3/SrTiO3 (LAO/STO) interfaces by means of laser angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy, taking advantage of the large photoelectron escape depth at low photon energy to probe these buried interfaces. We demonstrate the possibility of tuning the electronic density in Al/STO by varying the Al layer thickness and show that the electronic structure evolution is well described by self-consistent tight binding supercell calculations, but differs qualitatively from a rig…
Quantum mechanics postulates that any measurement influences the state of the investigated system. Here, by means of angle-, spin-, and time-resolved photoemission experiments and ab initio calculations we demonstrate how non-equal depopulation of the Dirac cone (DC) states with opposite momenta in V-doped and pristine topological insulators (TIs) created by a photoexcitation by linearly polarized synchrotron radiation (SR) is followed by the hole-generated uncompensated spin accumulation and the SR-induced magnetization via the spin-torque effect. We show that the photoexcitation of the DC is…
LiV$_2$O$_4$ is a mixed-valent spinel oxide and one of a few transition-metal compounds to host a heavy fermion phase at low temperatures. While numerous experimental studies have attempted to elucidate how its 3$d$ electrons undergo giant mass renormalization, spectroscopic probes that may provide crucial hints, such as scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), remain to be applied. A prerequisite is atomically flat and pristine surfaces, which, in the case of LiV$_2$O$_4$, are difficult to obtain by cleavage of small, three-dimensional crystals. We report the epitaxial growth of LiV$_2$O$_4$ thin…
We have investigated the shifts of the core-level photoemission spectra of La$_{0.6}$Sr$_{0.4}$MnO$_3$ thin films grown on three kinds of substrates, SrTiO$_3$, (LaAlO$_3$)$_{0.3}$-(SrAl$_{0.5}$Ta$_{0.5}$O$_3$)$_{0.7}$, and LaAlO$_3$. The experimental shifts of the La 4d and Sr 3d core levels are almost the same as the calculation, which we attribute to the absence of covalency effects on the Madelung potentials at these atomic sites due to the nearly ionic character of these atoms. On the other hand, the experimental shifts of the O $1s$ and Mn $2p$ core levels are negligibly small, in disagr…
We have studied the electronic structure of multilayers composed of a band insulator LaAlO$_3$ (LAO) and a Mott insulator LaVO$_3$ (LVO) by means of hard x-ray photoemission spectroscopy, which has a probing depth as large as $\sim 60 Å$. The Mott-Hubbard gap of LVO remained open at the interface, indicating that the interface is insulating unlike the LaTiO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ multilayers. We found that the valence of V in LVO were partially converted from V$^{3+}$ to V$^{4+}$ only at the interface on the top side of the LVO layer and that the amount of V$^{4+}$ increased with LVO layer thickness. W…
We investigated \LAO\ - \STO\ heterointerfaces grown either in oxygen rich or poor atmosphere by soft x-ray spectroscopy. Resonant photoemission across the Ti L$_{2,3}$ absorption edge of the valence band and Ti 2p core level spectroscopy directly monitor the impact of oxygen treatment upon the electronic structure. Two types of Ti$^{3+}$ related charge carriers are identified. One is located at the Fermi energy and related to the filling of the \STO\ conduction band. It appears for low oxygen pressure only. The other one is centered at E$_{B}$ $\approx$ 1 eV and independent of the oxygen pres…
The latest discovery of possible high temperature superconductivity in the single-layer FeSe film grown on a SrTiO3 substrate, together with the observation of its unique electronic structure and nodeless superconducting gap, has generated much attention. Initial work also found that, while the single-layer FeSe/SrTiO3 film exhibits a clear signature of superconductivity, the double-layer FeSe/SrTiO3 film shows an insulating behavior. Such a dramatic difference between the single-layer and double-layer FeSe/SrTiO3 films is surprising and the underlying origin remains unclear. Here we report ou…
In this Thesis, a study of the electronic structure of two Ti-based oxide systems, TiO2 thin films and the ultra-thin LaAlO3-SrTiO3 (LAO-STO) heterojunctions, is given. A weak room-temperature ferromagnetism (FM) has been detected in slightly reduced TiO2 thin film and in other oxides; as these materials are insulating closed-shell systems, this phenomenon has been classified as "d0 magnetism". Since this magnetism could be related to the growth process and to the presence of defects (oxygen vacancies, VO), an analysis of Ti electronic states (especially of Ti3+ energy levels) is mandatory. Th…
The electronic structure of FeSe thin films grown on SrTiO3 substrate is studied by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). We reveal the existence of Dirac cone band dispersions in FeSe thin films thicker than 1 Unit Cell below the nematic transition temperature, whose apex are located -10 meV below Fermi energy. The evolution of Dirac cone electronic structure for FeSe thin films as function of temperature, thickness and cobalt doping is systematically studied. The Dirac cones are found to be coexisted with the nematicity in FeSe, disappear when nematicity is suppressed. Our resul…
The measurement of hydrogen induced changes on the electronic structure of transition metal oxides by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy is a challenging endeavor, since the origin of the photoelectron cannot be unambiguously assigned to hydrogen. The H-induced electronic structure changes in tungsten trioxide have been known for more than 100 years, but are still being controversially debated. The controversy stems from the difficulty in disentangling effects due to hydrogenation from the effects of oxygen deficiencies. Using a membrane approach to X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, in combinati…
Similar to silicon that is the basis of conventional electronics, strontium titanate (SrTiO3) is the bedrock of the emerging field of oxide electronics. SrTiO3 is the preferred template to create exotic two-dimensional (2D) phases of electron matter at oxide interfaces, exhibiting metal-insulator transitions, superconductivity, or large negative magnetoresistance. However, the physical nature of the electronic structure underlying these 2D electron gases (2DEGs) remains elusive, although its determination is crucial to understand their remarkable properties. Here we show, using angle-resolved …
Single-layer FeSe films with extremely expanded in-plane lattice constant of 3.99A are fabricated by epitaxially growing FeSe/Nb:SrTiO3/KTaO3 heterostructures, and studied by in situ angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. Two elliptical electron pockets at the Brillion zone corner are resolved with negligible hybridization between them, indicating the symmetry of the low energy electronic structure remains intact as a free-standing single-layer FeSe, although it is on a substrate. The superconducting gap closes at a record high temperature of 70K for the iron based superconductors. Intrigu…
We perform a density functional theory study of the effects of oxygen adsorption on the structural and electronic properties of Gr/Co(0001) and Gr/Co/Ir(111) interfaces. In both interfaces, the graphene-Co distance increases with increasing O concentration. The oxygen intercalation effectively decreases the electronic interaction, preventing the hybridization of graphene states with Co $d$-orbitals, hence (partly) restoring the typical Dirac cone of pristine graphene. In the case of graphene/Co 1ML/Ir(111), which presents a moiré pattern, the interplay between the O distribution and the contin…
We report the formation and observation of an electron liquid in Sr$_{2-x}$La$_{x}$TiO$_4$, the quasi-two-dimensional counterpart of SrTiO$_3$, through reactive molecular-beam epitaxy and {\it in situ} angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. The lowest lying states are found to be comprised of Ti 3$d_{xy}$ orbitals, analogous to the LaAlO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ interface and exhibit unusually broad features characterized by quantized energy levels and a reduced Luttinger volume. Using model calculations, we explain these characteristics through an interplay of disorder and electron-phonon coupling a…
The mechanism of high temperature superconductivity in the iron-based superconductors remains an outstanding issue in condensed matter physics. The electronic structure, in particular the Fermi surface topology, is considered to play an essential role in dictating the superconductivity. Recent revelation of distinct electronic structure and possible high temperature superconductivity with a transition temperature Tc above 65 K in the single-layer FeSe films grown on the SrTiO3 substrate provides key information on the roles of Fermi surface topology and interface in inducing or enhancing super…
Hole-doped perovskite bismuthates such as Ba$_{1-x}$K$_x$BiO$_3$ and Sr$_{1-x}$K$_x$BiO$_3$ are well-known bismuth-based oxide high-transition-temperature superconductors. Reported thin bismuthate films show relatively low quality, likely due to their large lattice mismatch with the substrate and a low sticking coefficient of Bi at high temperatures. Here, we report the successful epitaxial thin film growth of the parent compound strontium bismuthate SrBiO$_3$ on SrO-terminated SrTiO$_3$ (001) substrates by molecular beam epitaxy. Two different growth methods, high-temperature co-deposition or…
Recently, monolayer CoSb/SrTiO$_3$ has been proposed as a candidate harboring interfacial superconductivity in analogy with monolayer FeSe/SrTiO$_3$. Experimentally, while the CoSb-based compounds manifesting as nanowires and thin films have been realized on SrTiO$_3$ substrates, serving as a rich playground, their electronic structures are still unknown and yet to be resolved. Here, we have fabricated CoSb$_{1-x}$ nanoribbons with quasi-one-dimensional stripes on SrTiO$_3$(001) substrates using molecular beam epitaxy, and investigated the electronic structure by in situ angle-resolved photoem…
Motivated by recent spin- and angular-resolved photoemission (SARPES) measurements performed on the two-dimensional electronic states confined near the (001) surface of SrTiO$_3$ in the presence of oxygen vacancies, we explore their spin structure by means of ab initio density functional theory (DFT) calculations of slabs. Relativistic nonmagnetic DFT calculations display Rashba-like spin winding with a splitting of a few meV and when surface magnetism on the Ti ions is in- cluded, bands become spin-split with an energy difference ~100 meV at the $Γ$ point, consistent with SARPES findings. Whi…
The record of superconducting transition temperature(Tc) has long been 56K for the iron-based high temperature superconductors(Fe-HTS's). Recently, in single layer FeSe films grown on SrTiO3 substrate, signs for a new 65K Tc record are reported. Here with in-situ photoemission measurements, we substantiate the presence of the spin density wave(SDW) in FeSe films, a key ingredient of Fe-HTS that was missed in FeSe before, which weakens with increased thickness or reduced strain. We demonstrate that the superconductivity occurs when the electrons transferred from the oxygen-vacant substrate supp…
Angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy is used for a detailed study of the electronic structure of the topological insulator Bi2Se3. Nominally stoichiometric and calcium-doped samples were investigated. The pristine surface shows the topological surface state in the bulk band gap. As time passes, the Dirac point moves to higher binding energies, indicating an increasingly strong downward bending of the bands near the surface. This time-dependent band bending is related to a contamination of the surface and can be accelerated by intentionally exposing the surface to carbon monoxide and other…
Hexagonal FeSe thin films were grown on SrTiO3 substrates and the temperature and thickness dependence of their electronic structures were studied. The hexagonal FeSe is found to be metallic and electron doped, whose Fermi surface consists of six elliptical electron pockets. With decreased temperature, parts of the bands shift downward to high binding energy while some bands shift upwards to EF. The shifts of these bands begin around 300 K and saturate at low temperature, indicating a magnetic phase transition temperature of about 300 K. With increased film thickness, the Fermi surface topolog…
In a recent work by Ji Seop Oh et al., BaBiO3(001) thin films were grown on SrTiO3 by Pulsed Laser Deposition. It was argued that the films are BiO2-terminated from the modelling of angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy experiments. The authors claim, in opposition to previous theoretical predictions, that there are no metallic surface states on their films. In this short comment we question that the authors have enough evidence to make such a claim, as we consider that the large mismatch between SrTiO3 and BaBiO3 and the lack of control of their fabrication process with reflection high en…
