The authors report on the crystallographic orientation dependence of the Schottky properties for heterojunctions between a half-metallic ferromagnet La$_0.6$Sr$_0.4$MnO$_3$ (LSMO) and Nb-doped SrTiO3 semiconductor. The Schottky barrier height determined by in situ photoemission measurements is independent for the substrate orientations (001) and (110), while the magnetic properties of LSMO (110) films are more enhanced than for (001) films. These results suggest that the performance of magnetic devices based on ferromagnetic manganite is improved by using (110)-oriented substrates.
Using first-principles density-functional calculations, we address the magnetic properties of the ferromagnet/antiferromagnet La(0.67)Sr(0.33)MnO3/BiFeO3(001) heterojunctions, and investigate possible driving mechanisms for a ferromagnetic (FM) interfacial ordering of the Fe spins recently observed experimentally. We find that the chemically abrupt defect-free La(0.67)Sr(0.33)MnO3/BiFeO3(001) heterojunction displays, as ground state, an ordering with compensated Fe spins. Cation Fe/Mn intermixing at the interface tends to favour, instead, a FM interfacial order of the Fe spins, coupled antifer…
Interface structure at polar/non-polar interfaces has been shown to be a key factor in controlling emergent behavior in oxide heterostructures, including the LaFeO$_3$/$\textit{n}$-SrTiO$_3$ system. We demonstrate via high energy resolution x-ray photoemission that epitaxial LaFeO$_3$/$\textit{n}$-SrTiO$_3$ (001) heterojunctions engineered to have opposite interface polarities exhibit very similar band offsets and potential gradients within the LaFeO$_3$ films. However, differences in the potential gradient within the SrTiO$_3$ layer depending on polarity may promote hole diffusion into LaFeO$…
We report on first principles calculations of the electronic structure of La$_{0.7}$Sr$_{0.3}$MnO$_{3}$/SrTiO$_{3}$ junction with two possible types of interface terminations. We find that the La$_{0.7}$Sr$_{0.3}$O/TiO$_{2}$ interface preserves the interlayer ferromagnetic coupling between the interface MnO$_{2}$ layer and the bulk. The other interface, MnO$_{2}$/SrO, favours antiferromagnetic coupling with the bulk. By inserting two unit cells of undoped LaMnO$_{3}$ at the interface the ferromagnetism is recovered. This is understood in terms of the doping level and the mobility of carriers n…
We examine, by means of ab initio pseudopotential calculations, La_2/3Sr_1/3MnO_3/SrTiO_3 (LSMO/STO) heterojunctions in which one unit layer of La_(1-x)Sr_xMnO_3 (with 0<x<1) is inserted at the interface. The optimal interlayer doping x for a robust interface ferromagnetism is investigated by considering the energy differences between antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic alignment of the MnO_2-interface layer relative to bulk LSMO. The optimal doping is found to be close to x=1/3, which corresponds to an abrupt TiO_2 (001)-layer termination of STO. This is also the composition which gives the l…
Rotations and distortions of oxygen octahedra in perovskites play a key role in determining their functional properties. Here we investigate how octahedral rotations can couple from one material to another in La$_{2/3}$Sr$_{1/3}$MnO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ epitaxial heterostructures by first principles density functional theory (DFT) calculations, emphasizing the important differences between systems oriented perpendicular to the (111)- and (001)-facets. We find that the coupling length of out-of-phase octahedral rotations is independent of the crystalline facet, pointing towards a steric effect. Howeve…
Thresholds for beam damage have been assessed for La$_{0.7}$Sr$_{0.3}$MnO$_3$ and SrTiO$_3$ as a function of electron probe current and exposure time at 80 and 200 kV acceleration voltage. The materials were exposed to an intense electron probe by aberration corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) with simultaneous acquisition of electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) data. Electron beam damage was identified by changes of the core loss fine structure after quantification by a refined and improved model based approach. At 200 kV acceleration voltage, damage in SrTiO$_3$ wa…
In this work we analyze the electronic structure at the junction between a SrTiO3 (001) single crystal and a thin tetragonal CuO layer, grown by off-axis RF-sputtering. A detailed characterization of the film growth, based on atomic force microscopy and X-ray photoelectron diffraction measurements, demonstrates the epitaxial growth. We report several markers of a thickness-dependent modification of the film gap, found on both Cu 2p and valence band spectra; through spectroscopic ellipsometry analysis, we provide a direct proof of a band gap increase of the tetragonal CuO layer (1.57 eV) with r…
In order to investigate the interface termination dependence of perovskite band alignments, we have studied the Schottky barrier height at La$_{0.7}$Sr$_{0.3}$MnO$_3$/Nb:SrTiO$_3$ (001) heterointerfaces. As the Nb:SrTiO$_3$ semiconductor was varied from TiO$_2$ termination to SrO termination by variable insertion of a SrMnO$_3$ layer, a large systematic increase in the Schottky barrier height was observed. This can be ascribed to the evolution of the interface dipole induced to screen the polar discontinuity at the interface, which gives a large internal degree of freedom for tuning band diagr…
The transport and magnetic properties of correlated La{0.53}Sr{0.47}MnO{3} ultrathin films, grown epitaxially on SrTiO{3}, show a sharp cusp at the structural transition temperature of the substrate. Using a combination of experiment and theory we show that the cusp is a result of resonant coupling between the charge carriers in the film and a soft phonon mode in the SrTiO{3}, mediated through oxygen octahedra in the film. The amplitude of the mode diverges towards the transition temperature, and phonons are launched into the first few atomic layers of the film affecting its electronic state.
We present a comprehensive study of the thickness dependence of static and magneto-dynamic magnetic properties of La$_{0.7}$Sr$_{0.3}$MnO$_3$. Epitaxial pulsed laser deposited La$_{0.7}$Sr$_{0.3}$MnO$_3$ / SrTiO$_3$(001) thin films in the range from 3 unit cells (uc) to 40 uc (1.2 - 16 nm) have been investigated through ferromagnetic resonance spectroscopy (FMR) and SQUID magnetometry at variable temperature. Magnetodynamically, three different thickness, $d$, regimes are identified: 20 uc $\lesssim d$ uc where the system is bulk like, a transition region 8 uc $\le d \lesssim 20$ uc where the …
STM based magnetotransport measurements of epitaxial La$_{0.7}$Sr$_{0.3}$MnO$_3$ 32 nm thick films with and without an internal LaMnO$_3$ layer (0-8 nm thick) grown on Nb doped SrTiO$_3$ are presented. The measurements reveal two types of low field magnetoresistance (LFMR) with a magnitude of $\sim 0.1-1.5\%$. One LFMR contribution is identified as a conventional grain boundary/domain wall scattering through the symmetric I-V characteristics, high dependence on tip placements and insensitivity to introduction of LaMnO$_3$ layers. The other contribution originates from the reverse biased Nb dop…
La$_{0.7}$Ce$_{0.3}$MnO$_3$ thin films of different thicknesses, degrees of CeO$_2$-phase segregation and oxygen deficiency, grown on SrTiO$_3$ single crystal substrates, were comparatively investigated with respect to both their spectral and temperature-dependent photoconductivity (PC) and their magnetoresistance (MR) behaviour under photoexcitation. While as-grown films were insensitive to optical excitation, oxygen reduction appeared to be an effective way to decrease the film resistance, but the film thickness was found to play a minor role. However, from the evaluation of the spectral beh…
Magnetocaloric properties of an inhomogeneous magnetic system of a 7.6 nm La${}_{0.7}$Sr${}_{0.3}$MnO${}_{3}$ consisting of superparamagnetic (SPM) with blocking temperature ( $T_B$ = 240 K) and ferromagnetic (FM) phases ( $T_C$ = 290 K) is studied by dc magnetization measurements. Isothermal magnetization versus applied magnetic field is carried out from 100 K to 320 K in magnetic fields up to 4 kOe to determine changes in the magnetic entropy ($-ΔS_M$) and the relative cooling power (RCP). Due to the co-existence of SPM and FM phases, there are two peaks in the temperature dependence of$-ΔS_…
Thin film synthesis methods developed over the past decades have unlocked emergent interface properties ranging from conductivity to ferroelectricity. However, our attempts to exercise precise control over interfaces are constrained by a limited understanding of growth pathways and kinetics. Here we demonstrate that shuttered molecular beam epitaxy induces rearrangements of atomic planes at a polar / non-polar junction of LaFeO$_3$ (LFO) / $n$-SrTiO$_3$ (STO) depending on the substrate termination. Surface characterization confirms that substrates with two different (TiO$_2$ and SrO) terminati…
Interface magnetic coupling and magnetization dynamic of La$_{2/3}$Sr$_{1/3}$MnO$_3$ single layer and (La$_{2/3}$Sr$_{1/3}$MnO$_3$/SrRuO$_3$)$_n$ (n = 1, 5) superlattice on SrTiO$_3$(001) substrate
We performed first - principles relativistic full-potential linearized augmented plane wave calculations for strained tetragonal ferromagnetic La(Ba)MnO$_3$ with an assumed experimental structure of thin strained tetragonal La$_{0.67}$Ca$_{0.33}$MnO$_3$ (LCMO) films grown on SrTiO$_3$[001] and LaAlO$_3$[001] substrates. The calculated uniaxial magnetic anisotropy energy (MAE) values, are in good quantitative agreement with experiment for LCMO films on SrTiO$_3$ substrate. We also analyze the applicability of linear magnetoelastic theory for describing the stain dependence of MAE, and estimate …
Ionic crystals terminated at oppositely charged polar surfaces are inherently unstable and expected to undergo surface reconstructions to maintain electrostatic stability. Essentially, an electric field that arises between oppositely charged atomic planes gives rise to a built-in potential that diverges with thickness. In ultra thin film form however the polar crystals are expected to remain stable without necessitating surface reconstructions, yet the built-in potential has eluded observation. Here we present evidence of a built-in potential across polar \lao ~thin films grown on \sto ~substr…
Thin films of perovskite manganite La_{0.7}Ca_{0.3}MnO_{3} were grown epitaxially on SrTiO_3(100), MgO(100) and LaAlO_3(100) substrates by the pulsed laser deposition method. Microscopic structures of these thin film samples as well as a bulk sample were fully determined by x-ray diffraction measurements. The unit cells of the three films have different shapes, i.e., contracted tetragonal, cubic, and elongated tetragonal for SrTiO_3, MgO, and LaAlO_3 cases, respectively, while the unit cell of the bulk is cubic. It is found that the samples with cubic unit cell show smaller peak magnetoresista…
Colossal magnetoresistive (CMR) La$_{0.7}$Sr$_{0.3}$MnO$_{3}$ (LSMO) thin films have been grown under tensile strains on (100)-SrTiO$_{3}$ substrates and compressive strains on (100)-LaAlO$_{3}$ and (110)-NdGaO$_{3}$ substrates by pulsed laser deposition. Using magnetic force microscopy (MFM), a "feather-like" magnetic pattern, characteristic of films with an in-plane magnetization, is observed for films deposited on both SrTiO$_{3}$ and NdGaO$_{3}$ while a "bubble" magnetic pattern, typical of films with an out-of plane magnetization, is recorded for LaAlO$_{3}$. We show that the shape of the…
In order to analyse the effect of strain on the magnetic properties of narrow-band manganites, the temperature and field dependent susceptibilities of about 8.5 nm thick epitaxial Pr0.7Ca0.3MnO3 films, respectively grown on (001) and (110) SrTiO3 substrates, have been compared. For ultrathin samples grown on (001) SrTiO3, a bulk-like cluster-glass magnetic behaviour is found, indicative of the possible coexistence of antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic phases. On the contrary, ultrathin films grown on (110) substrates show a robust ferromagnetism, with a strong spontaneous magnetization of abo…

We have found that the current- voltage characteristics of La0.7Sr0.3MnO3(-delta)/Nb:SrTiO3 rectifying junctions are quantitatively well-described by (thermally-assisted) tunneling with an effectively temperature-independent Schottky barrier under no magnetic field, while those of the oxygen deficient junction remarkably deviate from such a simple behavior as magnetic field is applied. These results indicate a new form of magnetoresistance arising from magnetic field changes of the interface band diagram via the strong electron-spin coupling in manganites.
The magnetic dead layers in films a few nanometers thick are investigated for La$_{0.7}$Sr$_{0.3}$MnO$_3$ on (001)-oriented SrTiO$_3$ (STO), LaAlO$_3$ (LAO) and (LaAlO$_3$)$_{0.3}$(Sr$_2$TaAlO$_6$)$_{0.7}$ (LSAT) substrates. An anomalous moment found to persist above the Curie temperature of the La$_{0.7}$Sr$_{0.3}$MnO$_3$ films is not attributed to the films, but to oxygen vacancies at or near the surface of the substrate. The contribution to the moment from the substrate is as high as 20 $μ$B/nm$^2$ in the case of STO or LSAT. The effect is increased by adding an STO cap layer. Taking this d…
We report the characterization of the crystal structure, low-temperature charge and orbital ordering, transport, and magnetization of Pr_{0.6}Ca_{0.4}MnO_{3} films grown on LaAlO_{3}, NdGaO_{3}, and SrTiO_{3} substrates, which provide compressive (LaAlO_{3}) and tensile (NdGaO_{3} and SrTiO_{3}) strain. The films are observed to exhibit different crystallographic symmetries than the bulk material, and the low-temperature ordering is found to be more robust under compressive-- as opposed to tensile-- strain. In fact, bulk-like charge and orbital ordering is not observed in the film grown on NdG…
The release process for the fabrication of freestanding oxide microstructures relies on appropriate, controllable and repeatable wet etching procedures. SrTiO3 is among the most employed substrates for oxide thin films growth and can be decomposed in HF:water solution. Such process is strongly anisotropic and is affected by local defects and substrate cut-plane. We analyze the etching behavior of SrTiO3 substrates having (100), (110), and (111) cut-planes during immersion in a 5% HF:water solution. The etching process over the three substrates is compared in terms of pitting, anisotropy, macro…
The low field magnetotransport of La$_{0.7}$Sr$_{0.3}$MnO$_3$ (LSMO) films grown on SrTiO$_3$ substrates has been investigated. A high qualtity LSMO film exhibits anisotropic magnetoresistance (AMR) and a peak in the magnetoresistance close to the Curie temperature of LSMO. Bi-epitaxial films prepared using a seed layer of MgO and a buffer layer of CeO$_2$ display a resistance dominated by grain boundaries. One film was prepared with seed and buffer layers intact, while a second sample was prepared as a 2D square array of grain boundaries. These films exhibit i) a low temperature tail in the l…
Bilayers of the oxide 3d ferromagnet La$_{0.7}$Sr$_{0.3}$MnO$_{3}$ (LSMO) and the 5d paramagnet SrIrO$_{3}$ (SIO) with large spin-orbit coupling (SOC) have been investigated regarding the impact of interfacial SOC on magnetic order. For the growth sequence of LSMO on SIO, ferromagnetism is strongly altered and large out-of-plane-canted anisotropy associated with lacking magnetic saturation up to 4 T has been observed. Thin bilayer films have been grown coherently in both growth sequences on SrTiO$_3$ (001) by pulsed laser deposition and structurally characterized by scanning transmission elect…
Superlattices composed of ferromagnetics, namely La$_{0.7}$Ca$_{0.3}$MnO$_3$ (LCMO), and ferroelectrics, namely, BaTiO$_3$(BTO) were grown on SrTiO$_3$ at 720$^o$C by pulsed laser deposition process. While the out-of-plane lattice parameters of the superlattices, as extracted from the X-ray diffraction studies, were found to be dependent on the BTO layer thickness, the in-plane lattice parameter is almost constant. The evolution of the strains, their nature, and their distribution in the samples, were examined by the conventional sin$^2ψ$ method. The effects of structural variation on the phys…
Due to the complex interplay of magnetic, structural, electronic, and orbital degrees of freedom, biaxial strain is known to play an essential role in the doped manganites. For coherently strained La(2/3)Ca(1/3)MnO(3) thin films grown on SrTiO(3) substrates, we measured the magnetotransport properties both parallel and perpendicular to the substrate and found an anomaly of the electrical transport properties. Whereas metallic behavior is found within the plane of biaxial strain, for transport perpendicular to this plane an insulating behavior and non-linear current-voltage characteristics (IVC…
Thin films of Nd$_{0.5}$Ca$_{0.5}$MnO$_{3}$ manganites with colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) properties have been synthesized by the Pulsed Laser Deposition technique on (100)-SrTiO$_{3}$. The lattice parameters of these manganites and correlatively their CMR properties can be controlled by the substrate temperature $T_{S}$. The maximum CMR effect at 75K, calculated as the ratio $ρ(H=0T)/ρ(H=7T)$ is 10$^4$ for a deposition temperature of $T_{S}=680$ degC. Structural studies show that the Nd$_{0.5}$Ca$_{0.5}$MnO$_{3}$ film is single phase, [010]-oriented and has a pseudocubic symmetry of the pe…
We present measurements of anisotropic magnetoresistance of La_{0.75}Sr_{0.25}MnO_3 films deposited on (001) SrTiO_3 substrates, and develop a model to describe the low temperature AMR in manganites. We measure an AMR of the order of 10^{-3} for the current I parallel to the [100] axis of the crystal and vanishing AMR for I//[110], in agreement with the model predictions.
Strained thin films of charge/orbital ordered (CO/OO) $Nd_{0.5}Ca_{0.5}MnO_3$ (NCMO) with various thickness have grown on (100)-SrTiO$_3$ and (100)-LaAlO$_3$ substrates, by using the Pulsed Laser Deposition (PLD) technique. The thickness of the films influences drastically the transport properties. As the thickness decreases, the CO transition increases while at the same time the insulator-to-metal transition temperature decreases under application of a 7T magnetic field. Clear relationships between the structural distortions and the transport properties are established. They are explained on …
We have investigated the shifts of the core-level photoemission spectra of La$_{0.6}$Sr$_{0.4}$MnO$_3$ thin films grown on three kinds of substrates, SrTiO$_3$, (LaAlO$_3$)$_{0.3}$-(SrAl$_{0.5}$Ta$_{0.5}$O$_3$)$_{0.7}$, and LaAlO$_3$. The experimental shifts of the La 4d and Sr 3d core levels are almost the same as the calculation, which we attribute to the absence of covalency effects on the Madelung potentials at these atomic sites due to the nearly ionic character of these atoms. On the other hand, the experimental shifts of the O $1s$ and Mn $2p$ core levels are negligibly small, in disagr…
Thin films of the charge-ordered (CO) compound Pr$_{0.5}$Ca$_{0.5}$MnO$_{3}$ have been deposited onto (100)-oriented SrTiO$_{3}$ substrates using the Pulsed Laser Deposition technique. Magnetization and transport properties are measured when the thickness of the film is varied. While the thinner films do not exhibit any temperature induced insulator-metal transition under an applied magnetic field up to 9T, for thickness larger than 1100\UNICODE{0xc5} a 5T magnetic field is sufficient to melt the CO state. For this latest film, we have measured the temperature-field phase diagram. Compared to …
We have investigated the role of the stress-induced by the presence of the substrate in thin films of colossal magnetoresistive manganites on structural, resistive and magnetic properties. Because of the strong coupling between the small structural distortions related to the charge-ordering (CO) and the resistive properties, the presence of the substrate prevents the full developpement of the charge ordering in Pr$_{0.5}$Ca$_{0.5}$MnO$_{3}$, especially in the very thin films. For thicker films, the CO state exists, but is not fully developped. Correlatively, the magnetic field which is necessa…
The coercivity of La$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$MnO$_3$ thin films can be enhanced by Ru substitution for Mn. In order to elucidate its mechanism, we performed soft x-ray absorption and magnetic circular dichroism measurements at the Ru M$_{2,3}$ and Mn L$_{2,3}$ edges. We found that the spin direction of Ru and Mn are opposite and that Ru has a finite orbital magnetic moment. Cluster-model analysis indicated that the finite orbital magnetic moment as well as the reduced spin moment of Ru result from local lattice distortion caused by epitaxial strain from the SrTiO$_3$ substrate in the presence of spin-orb…
The use of water-soluble sacrificial layer of Sr$_3$Al$_2$O$_6$ has tremendously boosted the research on freestanding functional oxide thin films, especially thanks to its ultimate capability to produce high-quality epitaxial perovskite thin films. However, the costly single-crystalline substrates, e.g. SrTiO$_3$, were generally discarded after obtaining the freestanding thin films. Here, we demonstrate that the SrTiO$_3$ substrates can be recycled to fabricate La$_{0.7}$Sr$_{0.3}$MnO$_3$ films with nearly identical structural and electrical properties. After attaining freestanding thin films,…
Films of cerium-doped LaMnO$_3$, which has been intensively discussed as an electron-doped counterpart to hole-doped mixed-valence lanthanum manganites during the past decade, were analyzed by x-ray photoemission spectroscopy with respect to their manganese valence under photoexcitation. The comparative analysis of the Mn 3s exchange splitting of La$_{0.7}$Ce$_{0.3}$MnO$_3$ (LCeMO) films in the dark and under illumination clearly shows that both oxygen reduction and illumination are able to decrease the Mn valence towards a mixed 2$+$/3$+$ state, independently of the film thickness and the deg…
Interest for layered Ruddlesden-Popper strongly correlated manganites of Pr$_{0.5}$Ca$_{1.5}$MnO$_4$ as well as to their thin film polymorphs is motivated by the high temperature of charge orbital ordering above room temperature. We report on the tailoring of the c-axis orientation in epitaxial RP-PCMO films grown on SrTiO$_3$ (STO) substrates with different orientations as well as the use of CaMnO$_3$ (CMO) buffer layers. Films on STO(110) reveal in-plane alignment of the c-axis lying along to the [100] direction. On STO(100), two possible directions of the in-plane c-axis lead to a mosaic li…
First-principles calculations based on density-functional theory in the pseudo-potential approach have been performed for the total energy, crystal structure and cell polarization for SrTaO$_2$N/SrTiO$_3$ heterostructures. Different heterojunctions were analyzed in terms of the termination atoms at the interface plane, and periodic or non-periodic stacking in the perpendicular direction. The calculations show that the SrTaO$_2$N layer is compressed along the $ab$-plane, while the SrTiO$_3$ is elongated, thus favoring the formation of P4mm local environment on both sides of the interface, leadi…
Spin-dependent conductance across a manganate-barrier-manganate junction has recently been demonstrated. The junction is a La$_{0.67}$Sr$_{0.33}$MnO$_3$% -SrTiO$_3$-La$_{0.67}$ Sr$_{0.33}$MnO$_3$ trilayer device supporting current-perpendicular transport. Large magnetoresistance of up to a factor of five change was observed in these junctions at 4.2K in a relatively low field of the order of 100 Oe. Temperature and bias dependent studies revealed a complex junction interface structure whose materials physics has yet to be understood.
We report on a systematic study of strain effects on the transport properties and the ferromagnetic transition temperature $T_{c}$ of high-quality La$_{0.9}$Sr$_{0.1}$MnO$_{3}$ thin films epitaxially grown on (100) SrTiO$_{3}$ substrates. Both the magnetization and the resistivity are critically dependent on the film thickness. $T_{c}$ is enhanced with decreasing the film thickness due to the compressive stain produced by lattice mismatch. The resistivity above 165 K of the films with various thicknesses is consistent with small polaronic hopping conductivity. The polaronic formation energy $E…
Thin films of Pr0.5Ca0.5MnO3 manganites exhibiting charge/orbital-ordered properties with colossal magnetoresistance have been synthesized by the pulsed laser deposition technique on both (100)-SrTiO3 and (100)-LaAlO3 substrates. The effects of current-induced metallic-behavior of the films are investigated as a function of the temperature and the magnetic field. Calculations based on a heat transfer model across the substrate, and our resistivity measurements reveal effects of Joule heating on charge transport over certain ranges of temperatures and magnetic fields. Our results also indicate …
We have investigated the magnetic-field-induced phase transition of charge-ordered (CO) Pr$_{0.5}$Ca$_{0.5}$MnO$_3$ thin films, deposited onto (100)-oriented LaAlO$_3$ and (100)-oriented SrTiO$_3$ substrates using the pulsed laser deposition technique, by measuring the transport properties with magnetic fields up to 22T. The transition to a metallic state is observed on both substrates by application of a critical magnetic field ($H_C>10T$ at 60K). The value of the field required to destroy the charge-ordered insulating state, lower than the bulk compound, depends on both the substrate and the…
Presently, cerium-doped LaMnO$_3$ is vividly discussed as an electron-doped counterpart prototype to the well-established hole-doped mixed-valence manganites. Here, La$_{0.7}$Ce$_{0.3}$MnO$_3$ thin films of different thicknesses, degrees of CeO$_2$ phase segregation, and oxygen deficiency, grown on SrTiO$_3$ single crystal substrates, are compared with respect to their resistance-vs.-temperature (R vs. T) behavior from 300~K down to 90~K. While the variation of the film thickness (and thus the degree of epitaxial strain) in the range between 10~nm and 100~nm has only a weak impact on the elect…
Magnetic anisotropy of epitaxially grown thin films is affected by the strain from the substrates due to a combined effect of distorted electronic structure and spin-orbit interaction (SOI). As an inverse process, one expects an anisotropy of the electronic structure induced by magnetization in the presence of SOI. We have studied the charge-density anisotropy induced by magnetization in thin films of the ferromagnetic metal La$_{1-x}$Sr$_{x}$MnO$_3$ via x-ray magnetic linear dichroism (XMLD). XMLD measurements on thin films with various thicknesses have shown that the XMLD intensity is propor…
LaCrO$_3$ (LCO) / SrTiO$_3$ (STO) heterojunctions are intriguing due to a polar discontinuity along (001), two distinct and controllable interface structures [(LaO)$^+$/(TiO$_2$)$^0$ and (SrO)$^0$/(CrO$_2$)$^-$], and interface-induced polarization. In this study, we have used soft- and hard x-ray standing-wave excited photoemission spectroscopy (SW-XPS) to generate a quantitative determination of the elemental depth profiles and interface properties, band alignments, and the depth distribution of the interface-induced built-in potentials in the two constituent oxides. We observe an alternating…
Understanding and manipulating properties emerging at a surface or an interface require a thorough knowledge of structure-property relationships. We report a study of a prototype oxide system, La2/3Sr1/3MnO3 grown on SrTiO3(001), by combining in-situ angle-resolved x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, ex-situ x-ray diffraction, and scanning transmission electron microscopy/spectroscopy with electric transport measurements. We find that La2/3Sr1/3MnO3 films thicker than 20 unit cells (u.c.) exhibit a universal behavior with no more than one u.c. intermixing at the interface but at least 3 u.c. of …
The suitability of a particular material for use in magnetic devices is determined by the process of magnetization reversal/relaxation, which in turn depends on the magnetic anisotropy. Therefore, designing new ways to control magnetic anisotropy in technologically important materials is highly desirable. Here we show that magnetic anisotropy of epitaxial thin-films of half-metallic ferromagnet La$_{0.7}$Sr$_{0.3}$MnO$_{3}$ (LSMO) is determined by the proximity to thermodynamic equilibrium conditions during growth. We performed a series of X-ray diffraction and ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) ex…
We have performed an in situ angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) on single-crystal surfaces of La$_{0.6}$Sr$_{0.4}$MnO$_{3}$ (LSMO) thin films grown on SrTiO$_{3}$ (001) substrates by laser molecular beam epitaxy, and investigated the electronic structure near the Fermi level ($E_{F}$). The experimental results were compared with the band-structure calculation based on LDA + $U$. The band structure of LSMO thin films consists of several highly dispersive O 2$p$ derived bands in the binding energy range of 2.0 - 6.0 eV and Mn 3$d$ derived bands near $E_{F}$. ARPES spectra around t…
The origin of the two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) in the interface between $γ$-Al$_2$O$_3$ (GAO) and SrTiO$_3$ (STO) (GAO/STO) as well as the reason for the high mobility of the 2DEG is still in debate. In this paper, the electronic structures of [001]-oriented GAO/STO heterostructures with and without oxygen vacancies are investigated by first-principle calculations based on the density functional theory. The calculation results show that the necessary condition for the formation of 2DEG is that the GAO/STO heterostructure has the interface composed of Al and TiO$_2$ layers. For the heter…
Fundamental understanding of interfacial magnetic properties in ferromagnetic heterostructures is essential to utilize ferromagnetic materials for spintronic device applications. In this paper, we investigate the interfacial magnetic and electronic structures of epitaxial single-crystalline LaAlO$_3$ (LAO)/La$_{0.6}$Sr$_{0.4}$MnO$_3$ (LSMO)/Nb:SrTiO$_3$ (Nb:STO) heterostructures with varying LSMO-layer thickness, in which the magnetic anisotropy strongly changes depending on the LSMO thickness due to the delicate balance between the strains originating from both the Nb:STO and LAO layers, usin…
We studied magnetic-field induced microwave absorption in 100-200 nm thick La$_{0.7}$Sr$_{0.3}$MnO$_{3}$ films on SrTiO$_{3}$ substrate and found a low-field absorption with a very peculiar angular dependence: it appears only in the oblique field and is absent both in the parallel and in the perpendicular orientations. We demonstrate that this low-field absorption results from the ferromagnetic resonance in the multidomain state (domain-mode resonance). Its unusual angular dependence arises from the interplay between the parallel component of the magnetic field that drives the film into multid…
In this Thesis, a study of the electronic structure of two Ti-based oxide systems, TiO2 thin films and the ultra-thin LaAlO3-SrTiO3 (LAO-STO) heterojunctions, is given. A weak room-temperature ferromagnetism (FM) has been detected in slightly reduced TiO2 thin film and in other oxides; as these materials are insulating closed-shell systems, this phenomenon has been classified as "d0 magnetism". Since this magnetism could be related to the growth process and to the presence of defects (oxygen vacancies, VO), an analysis of Ti electronic states (especially of Ti3+ energy levels) is mandatory. Th…
