We investigate the interplay of Coulomb interactions and short-range-correlated disorder in three dimensional systems where absent disorder the non-interacting band structure hosts a quadratic band crossing. Though the clean Coulomb problem is believed to host a 'non-Fermi liquid' phase, disorder and Coulomb interactions have the same scaling dimension in a renormalization group (RG) sense, and thus should be treated on an equal footing. We therefore implement a controlled $ε$-expansion and apply it at leading order to derive RG flow equations valid when disorder and interactions are both weak. We find that the non-Fermi liquid fixed point is unstable to disorder, and demonstrate that the problem inevitably flows to strong coupling, outside the regime of applicability of the perturbative RG. An examination of the flow to strong coupling suggests that disorder is asymptotically more important than interactions, so that the low energy behavior of the system can be described by a non-interacting sigma model in the appropriate symmetry class (which depends on whether exact particle-hole symmetry is imposed on the problem). We close with a discussion of general principles unveiled by our analysis that dictate the interplay of disorder and Coulomb interactions in gapless semiconductors, and of connections to many-body localized systems with long-range interactions.
Taking into account the interplay between the disorder and Coulomb interaction, the phase diagram of three-dimensional anisotropic Weyl semimetal is studied by renormalization group theory. Weak disorder is irrelevant in anisotropic Weyl semimetal, while the disorder becomes relevant and drives a quantum phase transition from semimetal to compressible diffusive metal phases if the disorder strength is larger than a critical value. The long-range Coulomb interaction is irrelevant in clean anisotropic Weyl semimetal. However, interestingly, we find that the long-range Coulomb interaction exerts …
The self-consistent Born approximation quantitatively fails to capture disorder effects in semimetals. We present an alternative, simple-to-use non-perturbative approach to calculate the disorder induced self-energy. It requires a sufficient broadening of the quasiparticle pole and the solution of a differential equation on the imaginary frequency axis. We demonstrate the performance of our method for various paradigmatic semimetal Hamiltonians and compare our results to exact numerical reference data. For intermediate and strong disorder, our approach yields quantitatively correct momentum re…
Disorder in Weyl semimetals and superconductors is surprisingly subtle, attracting attention and competing theories in recent years. In this brief review, we discuss the current theoretical understanding of the effects of short-ranged, quenched disorder on the low energy-properties of three-dimensional, topological Weyl semimetals and superconductors. We focus on the role of non-perturbative rare region effects on destabilizing the semimetal phase and rounding the expected semimetal-to-diffusive metal transition into a cross over. Furthermore, the consequences of disorder on the resulting natu…
Topological Weyl semimetals, besides manifesting chiral anomaly, can also accommodate a disorder-driven unconventional quantum phase transition into a metallic phase. A fundamentally and practically important question in this regard concerns an experimentally measurable quantity that can clearly distinguish these two phases. We show that the optical conductivity while serving this purpose can also play the role of a bonafide order parameter across such disorder-driven semimetal-metal quantum phase transition by virtue of displaying distinct scaling behavior in semimetallic and metallic phases,…
We consider frustrated Heisenberg antiferromagnets, whose clean-limit ground state is characterized by non-collinear long-range order with non-zero vector chirality, and study the effects of quenched bond disorder, i.e., random exchange couplings. A single bond defect is known to induce a dipolar texture in the spin background independent of microscopic details. Using general analytical arguments as well as large-scale simulations for the classical triangular-lattice Heisenberg model, we show that any finite concentration of such defects destroys long-range order for spatial dimension $d\leq 2…
The effect of short-range disorder in nodal line semimetals is studied by numerically exact means. For arbitrary small disorder, a novel semimetallic phase is unveiled for which the momentum-space amplitude of the ground-state wave function is concentrated around the nodal line and follows a multifractal distribution. At a critical disorder strength, a semimetal to compressible metal transition occurs, coinciding with a multi- to single-fractality transition. The universality class of this critical point is characterized by the correlation length and dynamical exponents. At considerably higher…
We theoretically study the topological robustness of the surface physics induced by Weyl Fermi-arc surface states in the presence of short-ranged quenched disorder and surface-bulk hybridization. This is investigated with numerically exact calculations on a lattice model exhibiting Weyl Fermi-arcs. We find that the Fermi-arc surface states, in addition to having a finite lifetime from disorder broadening, hybridize with nonperturbative bulk rare states making them no longer bound to the surface (i.e. they lose their purely surface spectral character). Thus, we provide strong numerical evidence…
In nodal-line semimetals, Coulomb interactions and short-range correlated disorder are both marginal perturbations to the clean non-interacting Hamiltonian. We analyze their interplay using a weak-coupling renormalization group approach. In the clean case, the Coulomb interaction has been found to be marginally irrelevant, leading to Fermi liquid behavior. We extend the analysis to incorporate the effects of disorder. The nodal line structure gives rise to kinematical constraints similar to that for a two-dimensional Fermi surface, which plays a crucial role in the one-loop renor- malization o…
Weyl semimetals are a newly discovered class of materials that host relativistic massless Weyl fermions as their low-energy bulk excitations. Among this new class of materials, there exist two general types of semimetals that are of particular interest: type-I Weyl semimetals, that have broken inversion or time-reversal symmetry symmetry, and type-II Weyl semimetals, that additionally breaks Lorentz invariance. In this work, we use Born approximation to analytically demonstrate that the type-I Weyl semimetals may undergo a quantum phase transition to type-II Weyl semimetals in the presence of …
We study the dynamics of Dirac and Weyl electrons in disordered point-node semimetals. The ballistic feature of the transport is demonstrated by simulating the wave-packet dynamics on lattice models. We show that the ballistic transport survives under a considerable strength of disorder up to the semimetal-metal transition point, which indicates the robustness of point-node semimetals against disorder. We also visualize the robustness of the nodal points and linear dispersion under broken translational symmetry. The speed of the wave packets slows down with increasing disorder strength, and va…
We numerically study the effect of short ranged potential disorder on massless noninteracting three-dimensional Dirac and Weyl fermions, with a focus on the question of the proposed quantum critical point separating the semimetal and diffusive metal phases. We determine the properties of the eigenstates of the disordered Dirac Hamiltonian ($H$) and exactly calculate the density of states (DOS) near zero energy, using a combination of Lanczos on $H^2$ and the kernel polynomial method on $H$. We establish the existence of two distinct types of low energy eigenstates contributing to the disordere…
The Brillouin zone of the clean Weyl semimetal contains points at which the density of states (DoS) vanishes. Previous work suggested that below a certain critical concentration of impurities this features is preserved including in the presence of disorder. This result got criticized for its neglect of rare disorder fluctuations which might bind quantum states and hence generate a finite DoS. We here show that in spite of their existence these states are so fragile that their contribution effectively vanishes when averaged over continuous disorder distributions. This means that the integrity o…
A Weyl semimetal denotes an electronic phase of solids in which two bands cross linearly. In this paper we study the effect of a spatially correlated disorder on such a phase. Using a renormalization group analysis, we show that in three dimensions, three scenarios are possible depending on the disorder correlations. A standard transition is recovered for short range correlations. For disorder decaying slower than $1/r^{2}$, the Weyl semimetal is unstable to any weak disorder and no transition persists. In between, a new phase transition occurs. This transition still separates a disordered met…
Disordered non-interacting systems in sufficiently high dimensions have been predicted to display a non-Anderson disorder-driven transition that manifests itself in the critical behaviour of the density of states and other physical observables. Recently the critical properties of this transition have been extensively studied for the specific case of Weyl semimetals by means of numerical and renormalisation-group approaches. Despite this, the values of the critical exponents at such a transition in a Weyl semimetal are currently under debate. We present an independent calculation of the critica…
We theoretically study the stability of three dimensional Dirac semimetals against short-range electron-electron interaction and quenched time-reversal symmetric disorder (but excluding mass disorder). First we focus on the clean interacting and the noninteracting dirty Dirac semimetal separately, and show that they support two distinct quantum critical points. Using renormalization group techniques, we find that while interaction driven quantum critical points are \emph{Gaussian} (mean-field) in nature, describing quantum phase transitions into various broken symmetry phases, the ones control…
The effect of Anderson diagonal disorder on the topological surface (``drumhead'') states of a Weyl nodal loop semimetal is addressed. Since diagonal disorder breaks chiral symmetry, a winding number cannot be defined. Seen as a perturbation, the weak random potential mixes the clean exponentially localized drumhead states of the semimetal, thereby producing two effects: (i) the algebraic decay of the surface states into the bulk; (ii) a broadening of the low energy density of surface states of the open system due to degeneracy lifting. This behavior persists with increasing disorder, up to th…
We analyze theoretically the conductivity of Weyl semimetals within the self-consistent Born approximation (SCBA) in the full range of disorder strength, from weak to strong disorder. In the range of intermediate disorder, we find a critical regime which separates the semimetal and diffusion regimes. While the numerical values of the critical exponents are not expected to be exact within the SCBA, the approach allows us to calculate functional dependences of various observables (density of states, quasiparticle broadening, conductivity) in a closed form. This sheds more light on the qualitativ…
We study the disorder-induced phase transition of higher-order Weyl semimetals (HOWSMs) and the fate of the topological features of disordered HOWSMs. We obtain a global phase diagram of HOWSMs according to the scaling theory of Anderson localization. Specifically, a phase transition from the Weyl semimetal (WSM) to the HOWSM is uncovered, distinguishing the disordered HOWSMs from the traditional WSMs. Further, we confirm the robustness of Weyl-nodes for HOWSMs. Interestingly, the unique topological properties of HOWSMs show different behaviors: (i) the quantized quadrupole moment and the corr…
Weyl semimetal, a three-dimensional electronic system with relativistic linear energy dispersion around gapless points carrying nontrivial Berry charge, is predicted to exhibit a wealth of unique response and transport properties.A crucial question is whether those properties are robust against disorder and whether Anderson localization occurs. In this work, the effects of nonperturbative topological (vortex loop) excitations and Berry phase in disordered time-reversal invariant 3d Weyl semimetal are studied. It is shown that the chiral symmetry is restored in the nonlinear sigma model describin…
Superconducting instability can occur in three-dimensional quadratic band crossing semimetals only at a finite coupling strength, due to the vanishing of density of states at the quadratic band touching point. Since realistic materials are always disordered to some extent, we study the effect of short-ranged correlated disorder on this superconducting quantum critical point, using a controlled loop-expansion applying dimensional regularization. The renormalization group (RG) scheme allows us to determine the RG flows of the various interaction strengths, and shows that disorder destroys the su…
A Weyl semimetal is a three dimensional topological gapless phase. In the presence of strong enough disorder it undergoes a quantum transition towards a diffusive metal phase whose universality class depends on the range of disorder correlations. Similar to other quantum transitions driven by disorder, the critical wave functions at the semimetal-diffusive metal transition exhibit multifractality. Using renormalization group methods we study the corresponding multifractal spectrum as a function of the range of disorder correlations for generic disorder including random scalar and vector potent…
We investigate the interplay of Coulomb interactions and correlated disorder in pseudospin-3/2 semimetals, which exhibit birefringent spectra in the absence of interactions. Coulomb interactions drive the system to a marginal Fermi liquid, both for the two-dimensional (2d) and three-dimensional (3d) cases. Short-ranged correlated disorder in 2d, or a power-law correlated disorder 3d, has the same engineering dimension as the Coulomb term, in a renormalization group (RG) sense. In order to analyze the combined effects of these two kinds of interactions, we apply a dimensional regularization sch…
Weyl semimetals are gapless quasi-topological materials with a set of isolated nodal points forming their Fermi surface. They manifest their quasi-topological character in a series of topological electromagnetic responses including the anomalous Hall effect. Here we study the effect of disorder on Weyl semimetals while monitoring both their nodal/semi-metallic and topological properties through computations of the localization length and the Hall conductivity. We examine three different lattice tight-binding models which realize the Weyl semimetal in part of their phase diagram and look for un…
We investigate the effects of quenched disorder on a non-interacting tilted Dirac semimetal in two dimensions. Depending on the magnitude of the tilting parameter, the system can have either Fermi points (type-I) or Fermi lines (type-II). In general, there are three different types of disorders for Dirac fermions in two dimensions, namely, the random scalar potential, the random vector potentials along and perpendicular to the tilting direction, and the random mass. We study the effects of weak disorder in terms of the renormalization group, which is performed by integrating out the modes with…
Systems with the power-law quasiparticle dispersion $ε_{\bf k}\propto k^α$ exhibit non-Anderson disorder-driven transitions in dimensions $d>2α$, as exemplified by Weyl semimetals, 1D and 2D arrays of ultracold ions with long-range interactions, quantum kicked rotors and semiconductor models in high dimensions. We study the wavefunction structure in such systems and demonstrate that at these transitions they exhibit fractal behaviour with an infinite set of multifractal exponents. The multifractality persists even when the wavefunction localisation is forbidden by symmetry or topology and occu…
It is commonly believed that a non-interacting disordered electronic system can undergo only the Anderson metal-insulator transition. It has been suggested, however, that a broad class of systems can display disorder-driven transitions distinct from Anderson localisation that have manifestations in the disorder-averaged density of states, conductivity and other observables. Such transitions have received particular attention in the context of recently discovered 3D Weyl and Dirac materials but have also been predicted in cold-atom systems with long-range interactions, quantum kicked rotors and…
We investigate the effect of disorder on the Landau levels (LLs) in tilted three dimensional Weyl semimetals (WSMs) when a magnetic field is present. Based on the minimum lattice model and by using the exact diagonalization and Kubo's formula, we numerically calculate the Hall conductivity and the density of states (DOS), from which several striking signatures are found to distinguish type-I WSMs from type-II WSMs: the first is the response of the Hall conductivity to the Fermi energy around the band center in clean limit, the second is the performance of the Hall conductivity to disorder, whe…
We study the conductance $G$ of 2D Dirac semimetal nanowires at the presence of disorder. For an even nanowire length $L$ determined by the number of unit cells, we find non-integer values for $G$ that are independent of $L$ and persist with weak disorder, indicated by the vanishing fluctuations of $G$. The effect is created by a combination of the scattering effects at the contacts(interface) between the leads and the nanowire, an energy gap present in the nanowire for even $L$ and the topological properties of the 2D Dirac semimetals. Unlike conventional materials the reduced $G$ due to the …
A Weyl semimetal (WSM) is a topological material that hosts Weyl fermions as quasiparticles in the bulk. We study the combined effect of intra- and interorbital disorders on WSMs by adopting a tight-binding model that supports the WSM, three-dimensional quantum anomalous Hall insulator (3D QAHI), and normal insulator (NI) phases in the clean limit. Based on the calculation of the localization length and the Hall conductivity, we present rich phase diagrams due to the interplay of intra- and interorbital disorders. We find that the WSM with well-separated Weyl nodes is stable to both weak intra…
The low-energy behaviors of gapless double- and triple-Weyl fermions caused by the interplay of long-range Coulomb interaction and quenched disorder are studied by performing a renormalization group analysis. It is found that an arbitrarily weak disorder drives the double-Weyl semimetal to undergo a quantum phase transition into a compressible diffusive metal, independent of the disorder type and the Coulomb interaction strength. In contrast, the nature of the ground state of triple-Weyl fermion system relies sensitively on the specific disorder type in the noninteracting limit: The system is …
Gapless Weyl semimetals (WSMs) are a novel class of topological materials that host massless Weyl fermions as their low-energy excitations. When the Weyl cone is tilted, the Lorentz invariance is broken and the Lifshitz transition drives the system from type-I WSMs into type-II WSMs. Here, based on the lattice model, we perform a systematic numerical study of the effect of on-site disorder on the diagonal magnetoconductivity in tilted WSMs.We use the self-consistent Born approximation to calculate the disorder-induced self-energy and then apply the Kubo-Streda formula to calculate the diagonal…
Quantum phase transitions of three-dimensional (3D) Weyl semimetals (WSMs) subject to uncorrelated on-site disorder are investigated through quantum conductance calculations and finite-size scaling of localization length. Contrary to previous claims that a direct transition from a WSM to a diffusive metal (DM) occurs, an intermediate phase of Chern insulator (CI) between the two distinct metallic phases should exist due to internode scattering that is comparable to intranode scattering. The critical exponent of localization length is $ν\simeq 1.3$ for both the WSM-CI and CI-DM transitions, in …
The competition between the indirect exchange interaction (IEC) of magnetic impurities in metals and the Kondo effect gives rise to a rich quantum phase diagram, the Doniach Diagram. In disordered metals, both the Kondo temperature and the IEC are widely distributed due to the scattering of the conduction electrons from the impurity potential. Therefore, it is a question of fundamental importance, how this Doniach diagram is modified by the disorder, and if one can still identify separate phases. Recently, it has been investigated the effect of Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) correlations…
We provide strong evidence of a quantum critical point (QCP) associated with the destruction of Kondo screening in the Anderson-Hubbard model for interacting electrons with quenched disorder. A unique crossover energy scale, $ω^*$ separating the Fermi liquid and non-Fermi liquid (nFL) scattering dynamics on the metallic side of the quantum critical fan is identified. The scale vanishes at the disorder driven QCP. We interpret our results by measuring the distribution of Kondo scales and find that the QCP occurs when this distribution acquires a finite intercept, indicating a Kondo destruction …
The chiral anomaly in Weyl semimetals states that the left- and right-handed Weyl fermions, constituting the low energy description, are not individually conserved, resulting, for example, in a negative magnetoresistance in such materials. Recent experiments see strong indications of such an anomalous resistance response; however, with a response that at strong fields is more sharply peaked for parallel magnetic and electric fields than expected from simple theoretical considerations. Here, we uncover a mechanism, arising from the interplay between the angle-dependent Landau level structure an…
Weyl semimetals (WSMs) have recently attracted a great deal of attention as they provide condensed matter realization of chiral anomaly, feature topologically protected Fermi arc surface states and sustain sharp chiral Weyl quasiparticles up to a critical disorder at which a continuous quantum phase transition (QPT) drives the system into a metallic phase. We here numerically demonstrate that with increasing strength of disorder the Fermi arc gradually looses its sharpness, and close to the WSM-metal QPT it completely dissolves into the metallic bath of the bulk. Predicted topological nature o…
In the presence of randomness, a relativistic semimetal undergoes a quantum transition towards a diffusive phase. A standard approach relates this transition to the $U(N)$ Gross-Neveu model in the limit of $N \to 0$. We show that the corresponding fixed point is infinitely unstable, demonstrating the necessity to include fluctuations beyond the usual Gaussian approximation. We develop a functional renormalization group method amenable to include these effects and show that the disorder distribution renormalizes following the so-called porous medium equation. We find that the transition is cont…
We study the effect of quenched disorder on the semimetal-superconductor quantum phase transition in a model of two-dimensional Dirac semimetal with $N$ flavors of two-component Dirac fermions, using perturbative renormalization group methods at one-loop order in a double epsilon expansion. For $N\geq 2$ we find that the Harris-stable clean critical behavior gives way, past a certain critical disorder strength, to a finite-disorder critical point characterized by non-Gaussian critical exponents, a noninteger dynamic critical exponent $z>1$, and a finite Yukawa coupling between Dirac fermions a…
In this work we address the physics of individual three dimensional Weyl nodes subject to a moderate concentration of disorder. Previous analysis indicates the presence of a quantum phase transition below which disorder becomes irrelevant and the integrity of sharp nodal points of vanishing spectral density is preserved in this system. This statement appears to be at variance with the inevitable presence of statistically rare fluctuations which cannot be considered as weak and must have strong influence on the system's spectrum, no matter how small the average concentration. We here reconcile …

Two-dimensional Dirac semimetal with tilted Dirac cone has recently attracted increasing interest. Tilt of Dirac cone can be realized in a number of materials, including deformed graphene, surface state of topological crystalline insulator, and certain organic compound. We study how Dirac cone tilting affects the low-energy properties by presenting a renormalization group analysis of the Coulomb interaction and quenched disorder. Random scalar potential or random vector potential along the tilting direction cannot exist on its own as it always dynamically generates a new type of disorder, whic…
We calculate the transport properties of three-dimensional Weyl fermions in a disordered environment. The resulting conductivity depends only on the Fermi energy and the scattering rate. First we study the conductivity at the spectral node for a fixed scattering rate and obtain a continuous transition from an insulator at weak disorder to a metal at stronger disorder. In the self-consistent Born approximation the scattering rate depends on the Fermi energy. Then it is crucial that the limits of the conductivity for a vanishing Fermi energy and a vanishing scattering rate do not commute. As a r…
