We consider a 3-dimensional (3D) non-Hermitian exceptional line semimetal model and take open boundary conditions in x, y, and z directions separately. In each case, we calculate the parameter regions where the bulk-boundary correspondence is broken. The breakdown of the bulk-boundary correspondence is manifested by the deviation from unit circles of generalized Brillouin zones (GBZ) and the discrepancy between spectra calculated with open boundary conditions (OBC) and periodic boundary conditions (PBC). The consistency between OBC and PBC spectra can be recovered if the PBC spectra are calculated with GBZs. We use both unit-circle Brillouin zones (BZ) and GBZs to plot the topological phase diagrams. The systematic analysis of the differences between the two phase diagrams suggests that it is necessary to use GBZ to characterize the bulk-boundary correspondence of non-Hermitian models.
Topological heavy-fermion systems in three dimensions are usually classified as topological insulators or semimetals. Here, we theoretically predict a different type of heavy-fermion system (dubbed exceptional heavy-fermion semimetal) by studying a three-dimensional periodic Anderson model consisting of strongly correlated localized $f$ electrons and itinerant conduction $c$ electrons in a zincblende lattice. Due to the breaking of inversion symmetry, the quasiparticle lifetimes at different sublattices are distinct, leading to the emergence of Weyl exceptional rings in the complex pole of the…
We propose a new type of Hopf semimetals indexed by a pair of numbers $(p,q)$, where the Hopf number is given by $pq$. The Fermi surface is given by the preimage of the Hopf map, which is nontrivially linked for a nonzero Hopf number. The Fermi surface forms a torus link, whose examples are the Hopf link indexed by $(1,1)$, the Solomon's knot $(2,1)$, the double Hopf-link $(2,2)$ and the double trefoil-knot $(3,2)$. We may choose $p$ or $q$ as a half integer, where torus-knot Fermi surfaces such as the trefoil knot $(3/2,1)$ are realized. It is even possible to make the Hopf number an arbitrar…
We study a new class of non-Hermitian topological phases in three dimension in the absence of any symmetry, where the topological robust band degeneracies are Hopf-link exceptional lines. As a concrete example, we investigate the non-Hermitian band structures of nodal line semimetals under non-Hermitian perturbations, where the Fermi surfaces can transit from 1d nodal lines to 2d twisting surfaces with Hopf-link boundaries when the winding number defined along the nodal line is $\pm 1$. The linking numbers of these linked exceptional line phases are also proposed, based on the integral of Cher…
Hopf-link semimetals exhibit exotic gapless band structures with fascinating topological properties, which have never been observed in nature. Here we demonstrate nodal lines with topological form of Hopf-link chains in artificial semimetal-bands. Driving superconducting quantum circuits with elaborately designed microwave fields, we mapped the momentum space of a lattice to a parameter space of the Hamiltonian for a Hopf-link semimetal. By measuring the energy spectrum, we directly imaged nodal lines in cubic lattices. By tuning the driving fields, we adjusted various parameters of Hamiltonia…
A multifold Hopf semimetal is a topological point node semimetal possessing an anisotropy in the internal electronic structure, e.g., the dipole structure of the Berry curvature. In this paper, the unique features of threefold Hopf semimetals in terms of the optical conductivity are theoretically investigated with a minimal theoretical model by using linear response theory for a linearly polarized photon. The frequency spectrum of the optical conductivity shows an anisotropic dependence on the polarization angle of the incident photon even if the electronic band structure is completely isotrop…
We construct a generic two-band model which can describe topological Weyl semimetals with multiple closed Weyl loops. All the existing multi-Weyl-loop semimetals including the nodal-net, or nodal-chain and Hopf-link states can be examined within one same framework. Based on a two-loop model, the corresponding drum-head surface states for these topologically different bulk states are studied and compared with each other. The connection of our model with Hopf insulators is also discussed. Furthermore, to identify experimentally these topologically different Weyl semimetal states, especially dist…
Topological semimetals can be classified by the connectivity and dimensionality of the band cross- ing in momentum space. The band crossings of a Dirac, Weyl, or an unconventional fermion semimet- al are 0D points, whereas the band crossings of a nodal-line semimetal are 1D closed loops. Here we propose that the presence of perpendicular crystalline mirror planes can protect 3D band crossings characterized by nontrivial links such as a Hopf link or a coupled-chain, giving rise to a variety of new types of topological semimetals. We show that the nontrivial winding number protects topolog- ical…
Non-Hermiticity in Weyl Hamiltonian leads to the realization of Weyl exceptional rings and flat bands inside the Weyl exceptional rings. Recently, the platform of non-Hermitian physics is extended to many-body or disordered systems where quasiparticles possess finite lifetime. Here, we clarify that the deviation from unitarity limit in a disordered Weyl semimetal leads to the generation of Weyl exceptional rings regardless of the detail of the scattering potential. In the case of topological Dirac semimetals, hybrid rings and flat bands without vorticity of complex-energy eigenvalues are reali…
For first-order topological semimetals, non-Hermitian perturbations can drive the Weyl nodes into Weyl exceptional rings having multiple topological structures and no Hermitian counterparts. Recently, it was discovered that higher-order Weyl semimetals, as a novel class of higher-order topological phases, can uniquely exhibit coexisting surface and hinge Fermi arcs. However, non-Hermitian higher-order topological semimetals have not yet been explored. Here, we identify a new type of topological semimetals, i.e, a higher-order topological semimetal with Weyl exceptional rings. In such a semimet…
We study non-Hermitian spatial symmetries -- a class of symmetries that have no counterparts in Hermitian systems -- and study how normal and exceptional semimetals can be stabilized by these symmetries. Different from internal ones, spatial symmetries act nonlocally in momentum space and enforce global constraints on both band degeneracies and topological quantities at different locations. In deriving general constraints on band degeneracies and topological invariants, we demonstrate that non-Hermitian spatial symmetries are on an equal footing with, but are essentially different from Hermiti…
Energy bands of non-Hermitian crystalline systems are described in terms of the generalized Brillouin zone (GBZ) having unique features which are absent in Hermitian systems. In this paper, we show that in one-dimensional non-Hermitian systems with both sublattice symmetry and time-reversal symmetry such as the non-Hermitian Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model, a topological semimetal phase with exceptional points is stabilized by the unique features of the GBZ. Namely, under a change of a system parameter, the GBZ is deformed so that the system remains gapless. It is also shown that each energy band i…
We consider the impact of disorder on the spectrum of three-dimensional nodal-line semimetals. We show that the combination of disorder and a tilted spectrum naturally leads to a non-Hermitian self-energy contribution that can split a nodal line into a pair of exceptional lines. These exceptional lines form the boundary of an open and orientable bulk Fermi ribbon in reciprocal space on which the energy gap vanishes. We find that the orientation and shape of such a disorder-induced bulk Fermi ribbon is controlled by the tilt direction and the disorder properties, which can also be exploited to …
We report on the dynamical formation of exceptional degeneracies in basic correlation functions of non-integrable one- and two-dimensional systems quenched to the vicinity of a critical point. Remarkably, fine-tuned semi-metallic points in the phase diagram of the considered systems are thereby promoted to topologically robust non-Hermitian (NH) nodal phases emerging in the coherent long-time evolution of a dynamically equilibrating system. In the framework of non-equilibrium Green's function methods within the conserving second Born approximation, we predict observable signatures of these nov…
Exceptional points are universal level degeneracies induced by non-Hermiticity. Whereas past decades witnessed their new physics, the unified understanding has yet to be obtained. Here we present the complete classification of generic topologically stable exceptional points according to two types of complex-energy gaps and fundamental symmetries of charge conjugation, parity, and time reversal. This classification reveals unique non-Hermitian gapless structures with no Hermitian analogs and systematically predicts unknown non-Hermitian semimetals and nodal superconductors; a topological dumbbe…
We propose and show that application of light leads to an intriguing platform for controlling exceptional points in non-Hermitian topological systems. We demonstrate our proposal using three different non-Hermitian systems -- nodal line semimetals, semi-Dirac semimetals and Dirac semimetals -- and show that using illumination with light one can engineer the positions and stability of exceptional points. We illustrate the topological properties of these models and map out their light-driven topological phase transitions.
Hexagonal warping (HW) in three-dimensional topological insulators is, by now, well-known. We show that non-Hermitian (NH) loss/gain can generate an exceptional HW effect in double Weyl-semimetals (DWSM). This unique feature of DWSMs has distinctive effects on Fermi surface topology. Importantly, in the presence of such a $k^3$ spin orbit coupling mimicking term, the symmetry associated with the DWSMs is changed, leading to four exceptional points, among which two are degenerate. Introducing a driving field removes this degeneracy. The combined action of the NH warping and driving parameters l…
We investigate the topological protection of surface states in Weyl and nodal-line semimetals by characterizing them as evanescent states when the band structure is extended to complex momenta. We find in this way a sequence of exceptional points -that is, branch points with zero energy in the complex spectrum- allowing us to identify the set of surface states with complex momentum signaling the decay into the 3D semimetal. From this point of view, Weyl and nodal-line semimetals can be classified in two types depending on the way surface states decay. Type A semimetals have surface states with…
In topological semimetals, the valence band and conduction band meet at zero-dimensional nodal points or one-dimensional nodal rings, which are protected by band topology and symmetries. In this Rapid Communication, we introduce "nodal-link semimetals", which host linked nodal rings in the Brillouin zone. We put forward a general recipe based on the Hopf map for constructing models of nodal-link semimetal. The consequences of nodal ring linking in the Landau levels and Floquet properties are investigated.
We investigate the potential of the surface states of 3D nodal-line semimetals to produce surface and 3D quantized Hall effects in which the electronic currents flow unidirectionally along the surface of the material. This phenomenology is based on the fact that, irrespective of its orientation, a strong magnetic field gives rise to a zero Landau level with huge 2D degeneracy of states in the nodal-line semimetal. When the magnetic field is perpendicular to the plane of the nodal line, we show that the evanescent states within the nodal ring are transmuted into Landau surface states which corr…
We study non-Hermitian higher-order Weyl semimetals (NHHOWSMs) possessing real spectra and having inversion $\mathcal{I}$ ($\mathcal{I}$-NHHOWSM) or time-reversal symmetry $\mathcal{T}$ ($\mathcal{T}$-NHHOWSM). When the reality of bulk spectra is lost, the NHHOWSMs exhibit various configurations of surface Fermi Arcs (FAs) and Exceptional Fermi Rings (EFRs), providing a setup to investigate them on an equal footing. The EFRs only appear in the region between 2nd-order WNs. We also discover Weyl nodes originating from non-Hermicity, called non-Hermitian Weyl nodes (NHWNs). Remarkably, we find T…
Non-Hermitian topological systems are the newest additions to the growing field of topological matter. In this work, we report of the light-driven exceptional physics in a multi-Weyl semi-metal. The driving is not only a key ingredient to control the position of the exceptional contours (ECs), light also has the ability to generate new ECs. Interestingly, we also demonstrate topological charge distribution and Lifshitz transition, which are controllable by the driving field in such generated ECs. Our findings present a promising platform for the manipulation and control over exceptional physic…
We theoretically investigate the emergence of non-hermitian physics at the heterojunction of a type-II Dirac semi-metal (DSM) and a dirty superconductor (DSC). The non-hermiticity is introduced in the DSM through the self-energy term incorporated via the dirtiness of the superconducting material. This causes the spectra of the effective Hamiltonian to become complex, which gives rise to the appearance of the exceptional points (EPs). This complex self energy, apart from having a frequency dependence, also acquires spatial dependence as well, which is unique and can provide interesting effects …
Parity-time ($\mathcal{PT}$) symmetry plays an important role both in non-Hermitian and topological systems. In non-Hermitian systems $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry can lead to an entirely real energy spectrum, while in topological systems $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry gives rise to stable and protected Dirac points. Here, we study a $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric system which is both non-Hermitian and topological, namely a $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric Dirac semimetal with non-Hermitian perturbations in three dimensions. We find that, in general, there are only two types of symmetry allowed non-Hermitian perturbatio…
We introduce the exceptional topological insulator (ETI), a non-Hermitian topological state of matter that features exotic non-Hermitian surface states which can only exist within the three-dimensional topological bulk embedding. We show how this phase can evolve from a Weyl semimetal or Hermitian three-dimensional topological insulator close to criticality when quasiparticles acquire a finite lifetime. The ETI does not require any symmetry to be stabilized. It is characterized by a bulk energy point gap, and exhibits robust surface states that cover the bulk gap as a single sheet of complex e…
Topological nodal line semimetals host stable chained, linked, or knotted line degeneracies in momentum space protected by symmetries. In this paper, we use the Jones polynomial as a general topological invariant to capture the global knot topology of the nodal lines. We show that every possible change in Jones polynomial is attributed to the local evolutions around every point where two nodal lines touch. As an application of our theory, we show that nodal chain semimetals with four touching points can evolve to a Hopf-link. We extend our theory to 3D non-Hermitian multi-band exceptional line…
It is generally believed that non-Hermiticity can transform Weyl semimetals into Weyl-exceptional-ring semimetals. However, this belief is from the systems without skin effect. We investigate the non-Hermitian Weyl semimental and its Floquet engineering in a system with skin effect, which breaks the bulk-boundary correspondence in its Hermitian counterpart. It is found in both the static and periodically driven cases that the skin effect makes this general belief no longer valid. We discover that exotic non-Hermitian topological matters, e.g., a composite phase of Weyl semimetal and topologica…
Time-periodic driving in the form of coherent radiation provides powerful tool for the manipulation of topological materials or synthetic quantum matter. In this paper we propose a scheme to realize non-Hermitian semimetals exhibiting exceptional rings in the spectra through Floquet engineering. A transition from a concentric pair of the rings to a dipolar pair is observed. The concentric pair carries only a quantized Berry phase while the dipolar pair possesses opposite Chern numbers in addition, signaling a topological Lifshitz transition of the Fermi surface. The transport properties of the…
We study the interplay of disorder and bandstructure topology in a Weyl semimetal with a tilted conical spectrum around the Weyl points. The spectrum of particles is given by the eigenvalues of a non-Hermitian matrix, which contains contributions from a Weyl Hamiltonian and complex self-energy due to electron elastic scattering on disorder. We find that the tilt-induced matrix structure of the self-energy gives rise to either a flat band or a nodal line segment at the interface of the electron and hole pockets in the bulk bandstructure of type-II Weyl semimetals depending on the Weyl cone incl…
Topological nodal line semimetals are characterized by the crossing of the conduction and valence bands along one or more closed loops in the Brillouin zone. Usually, these loops are either isolated or touch each other at some highly symmetric points. Here, we introduce a new kind of nodal line semimetal, that contains a pair of linked nodal loops. A concrete two-band model was constructed, which supports a pair of nodal lines with a double-helix structure, which can be further twisted into a Hopf link because of the periodicity of the Brillouin zone. The nodal lines are stabilized by the comb…
Topological semimetals feature a diversity of nodal manifolds including nodal points, various nodal lines and surfaces, and recently novel quantum states in non-Hermitian systems have been arousing widespread research interests. In contrast to Hermitian systems whose bulk nodal points must form closed manifolds, it is fascinating to find that for non-Hermitian systems exotic nodal manifolds can be bounded by exceptional points in the bulk band structure. Such exceptional points, at which energy bands coalesce with band conservation violated, are iconic for non-Hermitian systems. In this work, …
In this article we study 3D non-Hermitian higher-order Dirac semimetals (NHHODSMs). Our focus is on $C_4$-symmetric non-Hermitian systems where we investigate inversion ($\mathcal{I}$) or time-reversal ($\mathcal{T}$) symmetric models of NHHODSMs having real bulk spectra. We show that they exhibit the striking property that the bulk and surfaces are anti-PT and PT symmetric, respectively, and so belong to two different topological classes realizing a novel non-Hermitian topological phase which we call a \emph{hybrid-PT topological phases}. Interestingly, while the bulk spectrum is still fully …
We study a topological band degeneracy in non-Hermitian systems with parity-time ($PT$) and parity-particle-hole ($CP$) symmetries. In $d$-dimensional non-Hermitian systems, it is shown that $(d-1)$-dimensional exceptional surfaces can appear from band touching thanks to $PT$ or $CP$ symmetry. We investigate the topological stability and zero-gap quasiparticles for the exceptional surfaces due to the band degeneracy. We also demonstrate the band degeneracy by using lattice models of a topological semimetal and a superconductor.
We consider the effect of disorder on the spectrum of quasiparticles in the point-node and nodal-line superconductors. Due to the anisotropic dispersion of quasiparticles disorder scattering may render the Hamiltonian describing these excitations non-Hermitian. Depending on the dimensionality of the system, we show that the nodes in the spectrum are replaced by Fermi arcs or Fermi areas bounded by exceptional points or exceptional lines, respectively. These features are illustrated by first considering a model of a proximity-induced superconductor in an anisotropic two-dimensional (2D) Dirac s…
Recently, topological quantum states of non-Hermitian systems, exhibiting rich new exotic states, have attracted great attention in condensed-matter physics. As for the demonstration, most of non-Hermitian topological phenomena previously focused on are in one- and two-dimensional systems. Here, we investigate three-dimensional non-Hermitian nodal-line semimetals in the presence of a particle gain-and-loss perturbation. It is found that this perturbation will split the original nodal ring into two exceptional rings (ERs). The topological nature of the bulk electronic structure is characterized…
The fermion doubling theorem plays a pivotal role in Hermitian topological materials. It states, for example, that Weyl points must come in pairs in three-dimensional semimetals. Here, we present an extension of the doubling theorem to non-Hermitian lattice Hamiltonians. We focus on two-dimensional non-Hermitian systems without any symmetry constraints, which can host two different types of topological point nodes, namely, (i) Fermi points and (ii) exceptional points. We show that these two types of protected point nodes obey doubling theorems, which require that the point nodes come in pairs.…
The generic nature of band touching points in three-dimensional band structures is at heart of the rich phenomenology, topological stability and novel Fermi arc surface states associated with Weyl semimetals. Here we report on the corresponding scenario emerging in systems effectively described by non-Hermitian Hamiltonians. Remarkably, three-dimensional non-Hermitian systems have generic band touchings along one-dimensional closed contours forming exceptional rings and links in reciprocal space. The associated Seifert surfaces support open "Fermi ribbons" where the real part of the energy gap…
We explore the topological properties of non-Hermitian nodal-link semimetals with dissipative cold atoms in a three-dimensional optical lattice. We construct a two-band continuum model in three dimensions with a spin-dependent gain and loss, where the exceptional points in the energy spectrum can comprise a double Hopf link. The topology of the bulk band is characterized by a winding number defined for a one-dimensional loop in the momentum space and a topological transition of the nodal structures emerges as the change of the non-Hermiticity strength. A non-Bloch theory is built to describe t…
Weyl points are the simplest topologically-protected degeneracy in a three-dimensional dispersion relation. The realization of Weyl semimetals in photonic crystals has allowed these singularities and their consequences to be explored with electromagnetic waves. However, it is difficult to achieve nonlinearities in such systems. One promising approach is to use the strong-coupling of photons and excitons, because the resulting polaritons interact through their exciton component. Yet topological polaritons have only been realized in two dimensions. Here, we predict that the dispersion relation f…

Weyl points (WPs) are isolated degeneracies carrying quantized topological charges, and are therefore robust against Hermitian perturbations. WPs are predicted to spread to the Weyl exceptional rings (WERs) in the presence of non-Hermiticity. Here, we use a one-dimensional (1D) Aubry-Andre-Harper (AAH) model to construct a Weyl semimetal in a 3D parameter space comprised of one reciprocal dimension and two synthetic dimensions. The inclusion of non-Hermiticity in the form of gain and loss produces a WER. The topology of the WER is characterized by both its topological charge and non-Hermitian …
Node line (NL) band-touchings protected by mirror symmetry (named as $m$-NL), the product of inversion and time reversal symmetry $\mathcal{S=PT}$ ($s$-NL), or nonsymmorphic symmetry are nontrivial topological objects of topological semimetals (SMs) in the Brillouin Zone (BZ). In this work, we screened the family of MgSrSi-type crystals using first principles calculations, and discovered that more than 70 members are NLSMs. A new type of multi-loop structure was found in AsRhTi that a $s$-NL touches robustly with a $m$-NL at some "nexus point", and in the meanwhile a second $m$-NL crosses with…
