We establish the appearance of a qualitatively new type of spin liquid with emergent exceptional points when coupling to the environment. We consider an open system of the Kitaev honeycomb model generically coupled to an external environment. In extended parameter regimes, the Dirac points of the emergent Majorana fermions from the original model are split into exceptional points with Fermi arcs connecting them. In glaring contrast to the original gapless phase of the honeycomb model which requires time-reversal symmetry, this new phase is stable against all perturbations. The system also displays a large sensitivity to boundary conditions resulting from the non-Hermitian skin effect with telltale experimental consequences. Our results point to the emergence of new classes of spin liquids in open systems which might be generically realized due to unavoidable couplings with the environment.
Exceptional points, which are topological non-Hermitian degeneracies, show up in the collective mode spectrum of Fermi Liquids with high angular momentum interactions. In this paper, we look for signatures of these non-trivial singularities by computing the AC conductivity of Fermi liquids with dipolar and quadrupolar interactions in a narrow slab. We show that the finite size of the slab imprints clear signatures of the structures of the collective mode spectrum in the conductivity as well as in the dephasing between the electric field and the current density in a wide range of coupling const…
We show that interactions in quantum spin liquids can result in non-Hermitian phenomenology that differs qualitatively from mean-field expectations. We demonstrate this in two prominent cases through the effects of phonons and disorder on a Kitaev honeycomb model. Using analytic and numerical calculations, we show the generic appearance of exceptional points and rings depending on the symmetry of the system. Their existence is reflected in dynamical observables including the dynamic structure function measured in neutron scattering. The results point to new phenomenological features in realiza…
We show the existence of non-Hermitian degeneracies, known as exceptional points, in the collective mode spectrum of Fermi liquids with quadrupolar interactions. Through a careful analysis of the analytic properties of the dynamic quadrupolar susceptibility, we show that, in the weak attractive region, two stable collective modes coalesce to an exceptional point. We completely characterize this singularity, explicitly showing its topological properties. Experimental signatures are also discussed.
The non-Hermitian dynamics of open systems deal with how intricate coherent effects of a closed system intertwine with the impact of coupling to an environment. The system-environment dynamics can then lead to so-called exceptional points, which are the open-system marker of phase transitions, i.e., the closing of spectral gaps in the complex spectrum. Even in the ubiquitous example of the damped harmonic oscillator, the dissipative environment can lead to an exceptional point, separating between under-damped and over-damped dynamics at a point of critical damping. Here, we examine the fate of…
We investigate the impact of an Ohmic-class environment on the conduction and correlation properties of one-dimensional interacting systems. Interestingly, we reveal that inter-particle interactions can be engineered by the environment's noise statistics. Introducing a backscattering impurity to the system, we address Kane-Fisher's metal-to-insulator quantum phase transition in this noisy and realistic setting. Within a perturbative renormalization group approach, we show that the Ohmic environments keep the phase transition intact, while sub- and super-Ohmic environments, modify it into a smo…
Schrodinger cat states built from quantum superpositions of left or right Luttinger fermions located at different positions in a spinless Luttinger liquid are considered. Their decoherence rates are computed within the bosonization approach using as environments the quantum electromagnetic field or two or three dimensionnal acoustic phonon baths. Emphasis is put on the differences between the electromagnetic and acoustic environments.
We study a Luttinger Liquid (LL) coupled to a generic environment consisting of bosonic modes with arbitrary density-density and current-current interactions. The LL can be either in the conducting phase and perturbed by a weak scatterer or in the insulating phase and perturbed by a weak link. The environment modes can also be scattered by the imperfection in the system with arbitrary transmission and reflection amplitudes. We present a general method of calculating correlation functions under the presence of the environment and prove the duality of exponents describing the scaling of the weak…
Recently defect production was investigated during non-unitary dynamics due to non-Hermitian Hamiltonian. By ramping up the non-Hermitian coupling linearly in time through an exceptional point, defects are produced in much the same way as approaching a Hermitian critical point. A generalized Kibble--Zurek scaling accounted for the ensuing scaling of the defect density in terms of the speed of the drive and the corresponding critical exponents. Here we extend this setting by adding the recycling term and considering the full Lindbladian time evolution of the problem with quantum jumps. We find …
Non-fermi liquid and unconventional quantum critical points (QCP) with strong fractionalization are two exceptional phenomena beyond the classic condensed matter doctrines, both of which could occur in strongly interacting quantum many-body systems. This work demonstrates that using a controlled method one can construct a non-Fermi liquid within a considerable energy window based on the unique physics of unconventional QCPs. We will focus on the "nearly-marginal non-Fermi liquid", defined as a state whose fermion self-energy scales as $Σ_f(i ω) \sim i \mathrm{sgn}(ω)|ω|^α$ with $α$ close to $1…
We study a one-dimensional electron liquid coupled by a weak spin-exchange interaction to an antiferromagnetic spin-S ladder with n legs. A perturbative renormalization group analysis in the semiclassical limit reveals the opening of a spin gap, driven by the local magnetic correlations on the ladder. The effect, which we argue is present for any gapful ladder or gapless ladder with $nS\gg 1$, is enhanced by the repulsive interaction among the conduction electrons but is insensitive to the sign of the spin exchange interaction with the ladder. Possible implications for the striped phases of th…
We study the non-equilibrium dynamics of a Luttinger liquid after a simultaneous quantum quench of the interaction and dissipative quench to the environment within the realm of the Lindblad equation. When the couplings to environment satisfy detailed balance, the system is destined to thermalize, which we follow using bosonization. The thermodynamic entropy of the system, which also encodes information about the entanglement with the environment, either exhibits a maximum and minimum or grows monotonically before reaching its thermal value in a universal fashion. The single-particle density ma…
Quantum spin liquids attract great interest due to their exceptional magnetic properties characterized by the absence of long-range order down to low temperatures despite the strong magnetic interaction. Commonly, these compounds are strongly correlated electron systems, and their electrodynamic response is governed by the Mott gap in the excitation spectrum. Here we summarize and discuss the optical properties of several two-dimensional quantum spin liquid candidates. First we consider the inorganic material Herbertsmithite ZnCu$_3$(OH)$_6$Cl$_2$ and related compounds, which crystallize in a …
We study the problem of Luttinger liquids interacting with an active environment. We are particularly interested in how dissipation affects the response and correlation functions of non-isolated Luttinger liquids. We show that the exchange of particles, energy, and momentum lead to changes in the exponents characterizing the various correlations functions. We discuss the importance of the zero mode physics in this context.
We theoretically study an exactly solvable Gamma matrix generalization of the Kitaev spin model on the ruby lattice, which is a honeycomb lattice with "expanded" vertices and links. We find this model displays an exceptionally rich phase diagram that includes: (i) gapless phases with stable spin fermi surfaces, (ii) gapless phases with low-energy Dirac cones and quadratic band touching points, and (iii) gapped phases with finite Chern numbers possessing the values {\pm}4,{\pm}3,{\pm}2 and {\pm}1. The model is then generalized to include Ising-like interactions that break the exact solvability …
We investigate the stability of a Luttinger liquid, upon suddenly coupling it to a dissipative environment. Within the Lindblad equation, the environment couples to local currents and heats the quantum liquid up to infinite temperatures. The single particle density matrix reveals the fractionalization of fermionic excitations in the spatial correlations by retaining the initial non-integer power law exponents, accompanied by an exponential decay in time with interaction dependent rate. The spectrum of the time evolved density matrix is gapped, which collapses gradually as $-\ln(t)$. The von Ne…
Fermi liquid theory provides a remarkably powerful framework for the description of the conduction electrons in metals and their ordering phenomena, such as superconductivity, ferromagnetism, and spin- and charge-density-wave order. A different class of ordering phenomena of great interest concerns spin configurations that are topologically protected, that is, their topology can be destroyed only by forcing the average magnetization locally to zero. Examples of such configurations are hedgehogs (points at which all spins are either pointing inwards or outwards) or vortices. A central question …
