We investigate the stability of a Luttinger liquid, upon suddenly coupling it to a dissipative environment. Within the Lindblad equation, the environment couples to local currents and heats the quantum liquid up to infinite temperatures. The single particle density matrix reveals the fractionalization of fermionic excitations in the spatial correlations by retaining the initial non-integer power law exponents, accompanied by an exponential decay in time with interaction dependent rate. The spectrum of the time evolved density matrix is gapped, which collapses gradually as $-\ln(t)$. The von Neumann entropy crosses over from the early time $-t\ln(t)$ behaviour to $\ln(t)$ growth for late times. The early time dynamics is captured numerically by performing simulations on spinless interacting fermions, using several numerically exact methods. Our results could be tested experimentally in bosonic Luttinger liquids.
Quantum spin liquid is an exotic quantum state of matter in magnets. This state is a spin analogue of the liquid helium which does not solidify down to the lowest temperature due to strong quantum fluctuations. In conventional fluids, liquid and gas possess the same symmetry and adiabatically connect to each other by bypassing the critical end point. We find that the situation is qualitatively different in quantum spin liquids realizing in a three-dimensional Kitaev model; both gapless and gapped quantum spin liquid phases at low temperatures are always distinguished from the high-temperature …
We investigate a one dimensional quantum fluid coupled to a dissipative bath. The quantum fluid is captured by the canonical Luttinger liquid; the bath is given by the model of Caldeira and Leggett, i.e. a tower of oscillators coupled linearly to the fluid density, $ρ$. The bath can be integrated out exactly, producing an effective interaction for the fluid that is nonlocal in time; we argue that the form corresponding to Ohmic dissipation is generic. Compared to previous works, we compute correlation functions for this minimal model without approximation, including at finite temperature $T>0$…
Universal scaling relations for dissipative Tomonaga-Luttinger (TL) liquids with SU($N$) spin symmetry are obtained for both fermions and bosons, by using asymptotic Bethe-ansatz solutions and conformal field theory (CFT) in one-dimensional non-Hermitian quantum many-body systems with SU($N$) symmetry. We uncover that the spectrum of dissipative TL liquids with SU($N$) spin symmetry is described by the sum of one charge mode characterized by a complex generalization of $c=1$ U(1) Gaussian CFT, and $N-1$ spin modes characterized by level-$1$ SU($N$) Kac-Moody algebra with the conformal anomaly …
We demonstrate the universal properties of dissipative Tomonaga-Luttinger (TL) liquids by calculating correlation functions and performing finite-size scaling analysis of a non-Hermitian XXZ spin chain as a prototypical model in one-dimensional open quantum many-body systems. Our analytic calculation is based on effective field theory with bosonization, finite-size scaling approach in conformal field theory, and the Bethe-ansatz solution. Our numerical analysis is based on the density-matrix renormalization group generalized to non-Hermitian systems (NH-DMRG). We uncover that the model in the …
We study a one-dimensional Fermi gas in the presence of dissipative coupling to environment through the Lindblad equation. The dissipation involves energy exchange with the environment and favours the relaxation of electrons to excitations. After switching on the dissipation, the system approaches a steady state, which is described by a generalized Gibbs ensemble. The fermionic single particle density matrix resembles deceivingly to that in a hermitian interaction quench. It decays inversely with the distance for short times due to the fermionic correlations in the initial state, which changes…
We study the non-equilibrium dynamics of a Luttinger liquid after a simultaneous quantum quench of the interaction and dissipative quench to the environment within the realm of the Lindblad equation. When the couplings to environment satisfy detailed balance, the system is destined to thermalize, which we follow using bosonization. The thermodynamic entropy of the system, which also encodes information about the entanglement with the environment, either exhibits a maximum and minimum or grows monotonically before reaching its thermal value in a universal fashion. The single-particle density ma…
We find the nonlinear conductance of a dissipative resonant level in the nonequilibrium steady state near its quantum critical point. The system consists of a spin-polarized quantum dot connected to two resistive leads that provide ohmic dissipation. We focus on the crossover from the strong-coupling, non-Fermi-liquid regime to the weak-coupling, Fermi-liquid ground state, a crossover driven by the instability of the quantum critical point to hybridization asymmetry or detuning of the level in the dot. We show that the crossover properties are given by tunneling through an effective single bar…
In a recent work [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 108}, 136401 (2012)] we have addressed the problem of a Luttinger liquid with a scatterer that allows for both coherent and incoherent scattering channels. We have found that the physics associated with this model is qualitatively different from the elastic impurity setup analyzed by Kane and Fisher, and from the inelastic scattering scenario studied by Furusaki and Matveev, thus proposing a new paradigmatic picture of Luttinger liquid with an impurity. Here we present an extensive study of the renormalization group flows for this problem, the fixed poin…
Strongly correlated quantum systems often display universal behavior as, in certain regimes, their properties are found to be independent of the microscopic details of the underlying system. An example of such a situation is the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid description of one-dimensional strongly correlated bosonic or fermionic systems. Here we investigate how such a quantum liquid responds under dissipative dephasing dynamics and, in particular, we identify how the universal Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid properties melt away. Our study, based on adiabatic elimination, shows that dephasing first tran…

We study tunneling through a resonant level connected to two dissipative bosonic baths: one is the resistive environment of the source and drain leads, while the second comes from coupling to potential fluctuations on a resistive gate. We show that several quantum phase transitions (QPT) occur in such a model, transitions which emulate those found in interacting systems such as Luttinger liquids or Kondo systems. We first use bosonization to map this dissipative resonant level model to a resonant level in a Luttinger liquid, one with, curiously, two interaction parameters. Drawing on methods f…
The density correlations of some singular Fermi liquids with anomalous properties such as resistivity varying linearly with T at low temperatures, a $T \log T$ contribution to the entropy and thermopower, etc., are expected to be quite different from that in Landau Fermi liquids. A possible statistical mechanical model for the quantum critical fluctuations in diverse systems with such properties is the 2D dissipative quantum XY model. Exact relations between the density correlations and singular irreducible vertices due to coupling of Fermions to the topological excitations of the 2D dissipati…
