We introduce and implement a method to compute stationary states of nonlinear Schr\''odinger equations on metric graphs. Stationary states are obtained as local minimizers of the nonlinear Schr\''odinger energy at fixed mass. Our method is based on a normalized gradient flow for the energy (i.e. a gradient flow projected on a fixed mass sphere) adapted to the context of nonlinear quantum graphs. We first prove that, at the continuous level, the normalized gradient flow is well-posed, mass-preserving, energy diminishing and converges (at least locally) towards stationary states. We then establish the link between the continuous flow and its discretized version. We conclude by conducting a series of numerical experiments in model situations showing the good performance of the discrete flow to compute stationary states. Further experiments as well as detailed explanation of our numerical algorithm are given in a companion paper.
The global attraction to stationary states is established for solutions to 3D wave equations with concentrated nonlinearities: each finite energy solution converges as $t\to\pm\infty$ to stationary states. The attraction is caused by nonlinear energy radiation.
Using an rotation of Yuan, we observe that the gradient graph of any semiconvex function is a Liouville manifold, that is, does not admit bounded harmonic functions. As a corollary, we find that any entire solution of the fourth order Hamiltonian stationary equation with Lagrangian phase angle uniformly larger than the critical angle must be a quadratic.
In this paper, we are concerned with the existence of nonnegative solutions for a nonlinear elliptic system. Our results are obtained by an application of the Arzela--Ascoli theorem.
The inflow problem for the full two-phase model in a half line is investigated in this paper. The existence and uniqueness of the stationary solution is shown by applications of center manifold theory, and its nonlinear stablility of the stationary solution is established for the small perturbation.
We consider the inverse problem of the detection of a single body, immersed in a bounded container filled with a fluid which obeys the stationary Navier-Stokes equations, from a single measurement of force and velocity on a portion of the boundary. We obtain an estimate of stability of log-log type.
We prove the Freidlin-Wentzell type large deviations principle for the family of stationary measures of stochastic nonlinear wave (NLW) equation with white noise. We do not assume that the limiting equation possesses a unique equilibrium and do not impose roughness on the noise. This allows to provide the first such result in the PDE setting.
This is a habilitation self-report describing results on forced periodic solutions of partial differential equations. Here averaging principle in the spirit of Bogoliubov and Mitropolsky for ODE's and Henry for parabolic equations are used together with topological methods such as fixed point index and topological degree.
In historical mathematics and physics, the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation or a quasilinear stationary version of a time-dependent viscous Hamilton-Jacobi equation in growing interface and universality classes, is also known by the different name as the quasilinear Riccati type equation. The existence of solutions to this type of equation under some assumptions and requirements, still remains an interesting open problem at the moment. In our previous studies \cite{MP2018, MPT2019}, we obtained the global bounds and gradient estimates for quasilinear elliptic equations with measure data. There hav…
We consider the Navier-Stokes system with Oseen and rotational terms describing the stationary flow of a viscous incompressible fluid around a rigid body moving at a constant velocity and rotating at a constant angular velocity. In a previous paper, we prove a representation formula for weak solutions of the system. Here the representation formula is used to get an asymptotic expansion of respectively velocity and its gradient, and to establish pointwise decay estimates of remainder terms. Our results are based on a fundamental solution proposed by Guenther and Thomann J. Math. Fluid Mech., 8 …
We study homogenization for fully nonlinear uniformly parabolic equations in stationary ergodic spatio-temporal media from the qualitative and quantitative perspective. We show that under suitable hypotheses, solutions to fully nonlinear uniformly parabolic equations in spatio-temporal media homogenize almost surely. In addition, we obtain a rate of convergence for this homogenization in measure, assuming that the environment is strongly mixing with a prescribed rate. A general methodology to study the stochastic homogenization of uniformly elliptic equations was introduced by Caffarelli, Soug…
We prove that the stochastic Burgers equation on $\mathbf{R}^{d}$, $d<4$, forced by gradient noise that is white in time and smooth in space, admits spacetime-stationary solutions. These solutions are thus the gradients of solutions to the KPZ equation on $\mathbf{R}^{d}$ with stationary gradients. The proof works by proving tightness of the time-averaged laws of the solutions in an appropriate weighted space.
This paper is devoted to the generic transversality of radially symmetric stationary solutions of nonlinear parabolic systems of the form \[ \partial_t w(x,t) = -\nabla V\bigl(w((x,t))\bigr) + Δ_x w(x,t) \,, \] where the space variable $x$ is multidimensional and unbounded. It is proved that, generically with respect to the potential $V$, radially symmetric stationary solutions that are stable at infinity (in other words, that approach a minimum point of $V$ at infinity in space) are transverse; as a consequence, the set of such solutions is discrete. This result can be viewed as the extension…
We consider stationary waves on nonlinear quantum star graphs, i.e. solutions to the stationary (cubic) nonlinear Schrödinger equation on a metric star graph with Kirchhoff matching conditions at the centre. We prove the existence of solutions that vanish at the centre of the star and classify them according to the nodal structure on each edge (i.e. the number of nodal domains or nodal points that the solution has on each edge). We discuss the relevance of these solutions in more applied settings as starting points for numerical calculations of spectral curves and put our results into the wide…
We study stationary Stokes systems in divergence form with piecewise Dini mean oscillation coefficients and data in a bounded domain containing a finite number of subdomains with $C^{1,\rm{Dini}}$ boundaries. We prove that if $(u, p)$ is a weak solution of the system, then $(Du, p)$ is bounded and piecewise continuous. The corresponding results for stationary Navier-Stokes systems are also established, from which the Lipschitz regularity of the stationary $H^1$-weak solution in dimensions $d=2,3,4$ is obtained.
We study a stationary scattering problem related to the nonlinear Helmholtz equation $-Δu - k^2 u = f(x,u) \ \ \text{in $\mathbb{R}^N$,}$ where $N \ge 3$ and $k>0$. For a given incident free wave $φ\in L^\infty(\mathbb{R}^N)$, we prove the existence of complex-valued solutions of the form $u=φ+u_{\text{sc}}$, where $u_{\text{sc}}$ satisfies the Sommerfeld outgoing radiation condition. Since neither a variational framework nor maximum principles are available for this problem, we use topological fixed point theory and global bifurcation theory to solve an associated integral equation involving …
We consider a continuum aggregation model with nonlinear local repulsion given by a degenerate power-law diffusion with general exponent. The steady states and their properties in one dimension are studied both analytically and numerically, suggesting that the quadratic diffusion is a critical case. The focus is on finite-size, monotone and compactly supported equilibria. We also investigate numerically the long time asymptotics of the model by simulations of the evolution equation. Issues such as metastability and local/ global stability are studied in connection to the gradient flow formulat…
We study positive bound states for the equation $$- ε^2 Δu + Vu = u^p, \qquad \text{in $\mathbf{R}^N$}, $$ where $ε> 0$ is a real parameter, $\frac{N}{N-2} < p < \frac{N+2}{N-2}$ and $V$ is a nonnegative potential. Using purely variational techniques, we find solutions which concentrate at local maxima of the potential $V$ without any restriction on the potential.
We study the asymptotic behavior of oscillatory Riemann-Hilbert problems arising in the AKNS hierarchy of integrable nonlinear PDE's. Our method is based on the Deift-Zhou nonlinear steepest descent method in which the given Riemann-Hilbert problem localizes to small neighborhoods of stationary phase points. In their original work, Deift and Zhou only considered analytic phase functions. Subsequently Varzugin extended the Deift-Zhou method to a certain restricted class of non-analytic phase functions. In this paper, we extend Varzugin's method to a substantially more general class of non-analy…
In this paper we examine fully nonlinear mean-field games associated with a minimization problem. The variational setting is driven by a functional depending on its argument through its Hessian matrix. We work under fairly natural conditions and establish improved (sharp) regularity for the solutions in Sobolev spaces. Then, we prove the existence of minimizers for the variational problem and the existence of solutions to the mean-field games system. We also investigate a unidimensional example and unveil new information on the explicit solutions. Our findings can be generalized to a larger cl…
Consider the nonlinear heat equation v_t-Δv=|v|^{p-1}v in the unit ball of R^2, with Dirichlet boundary condition. Let u_{p,K} be a radially symmetric, sign-changing stationary solution having a fixed number K of nodal regions. We prove that the solution of the equation with initial value λu_{p,K} blows up in finite time if |λ-1|>0 is sufficiently small and if p is sufficiently large. The proof is based on the analysis of the asymptotic behavior of $u_{p,K}$ and of the linearized operator L= -Δ- p |u_{p,K}|^{p-1}. To show this we consider the linearized operator L= -Δ- p|u_p|^{p-1} and study t…
We obtain existence and multiplicity results for the solutions of a class of coupled semilinear bi-harmonic Schrödinger equations. Actually, using the classical Mountain Pass Theorem and minimization techniques, we prove the existence of critical points of the associated functional constrained on the \emph{Nehari manifold}. Furthermore, we show that using the so-called \emph{fibering method} and the \emph{Lusternik-Schnirel'man theory} there exist infinitely many solutions, actually a countable family of critical points, for such a semiliner bi-hamonic Schrödinger system under study in this wo…
In this paper we are concerned with a class of double phase energy functionals arising in the theory of transonic flows. Their main feature is that the associated Euler equation is driven by the Baouendi-Grushin operator with variable coefficient. This partial differential equation is of mixed type and possesses both elliptic and hyperbolic regions. After establishing a weighted inequality for the Baouendi-Grushin operator and a related compactness property, we establish the existence of stationary waves under arbitrary perturbations of the reaction.
We consider the evolution of open planar curves by the steepest descent flow of a geometric functional, under different boundary conditions. We prove that, if any set of stationary solutions with fixed energy is finite, then a solution of the flow converges to a stationary solution as time goes to infinity. We also present a few applications of this result.
We prove that the Debye screening length emerges in a spatially homogeneous plasma described by the nonlinear Vlasov-Poisson equation interacting with a point charge. While screened stationary states as well as the time-dependent problem are well-studied for the linearized equation, there are few rigorous results on screening in the nonlinear setting. As such, the results presented here cover the stationary case under the assumptions predicted by the linearized theory.
We survey the theory of attractors of nonlinear Hamiltonian partial differential equations since its appearance in 1990. These are results on global attraction to stationary states, to solitons and to stationary orbits, on adiabatic effective dynamics of solitons and their asymptotic stability. Results of numerical simulations are also given. Based on these results, we propose a new general hypothesis on attractors of $G$-invariant nonlinear Hamiltonian partial differential equations. The obtained results suggest a novel dynamical interpretation of basic quantum phenomena: Bohr's transitions b…
The Möbius energy is a well-studied knot energy with nice regularity and self-repulsive properties. Stationary curves under the Möbius energy gradient are of significant theoretical interest as they they can indicate equilibrium states of a curve under its own forces. In this paper, we consider stationary symmetric helix pairs under the Möbius energy. Through methods of complex asymptotics, we characterize the limiting behavior of the Möbius gradient as the coiling ratio tends to infinity: the gradient will diverge in opposing directions depending on whether the radius is less than or greater …
