We study the existence of nontrivial nonlocal nonnegative solutions $u(x,t)$ of the nonlinear initial value problems \[ (\partial_t -Δ)^αu\geq u^λ\quad \text{in } \mathbb{R}^n \times\mathbb{R},\,n\geq 1 \] \[ u=0 \quad\text{in } \mathbb{R}^n \times(-\infty,0) \] and \[ C_1 u^λ\leq(\partial_t -Δ)^αu\leq C_2 u^λ\quad\text{in } \mathbb{R}^n \times\mathbb{R},\,n\geq1 \] \[ u=0 \quad\text{in } \mathbb{R}^n \times(-\infty,0), \] where $λ,α,C_1$, and $C_2$ are positive constants with $C_1 <C_2$. We use the definition of the fractional heat operator $(\partial_t -Δ)^α$ given in [Taliaferro, 2020] and compare our results in the classical case $α=1$ to known results.
We study the boundary behavior of viscosity nonnegative solutions of fully nonlinear parabolic Pucci extremal operators. We establish local and global comparison theorems in $C^{1,1} cylinders, along with a backward Harnack inequality.
This note establishes an interior quantitative lower bound for nonnegative supersolutions of fully nonlinear uniformly parabolic equations. The result may be interpreted as a nonlinear, quantitative version of a growth lemma established by Krylov and Safonov for nonnegative supersolutions of linear uniformly parabolic equations in nondivergence form. Our approach is different, and follows from an application of the Fabes-Stroock estimate. The result is the parabolic analogue of an elliptic regularity estimate established by Caffarelli, Souganidis, and Wang in the stochastic homogenization of f…
We consider nonnegative solutions of a parabolic equation in a cylinder $D \timesI$, where $D$ is a noncompact domain of a Riemannian manifold and $I =(0,T)$ with $0 < T \le \infty$ or $I=(-\infty,0)$. Under the assumption [SSP] (i.e., the constant function 1 is a semismall perturbation of the associated elliptic operator on $D$), we establish an integral representation theorem of nonnegative solutions: In the case $I =(0,T)$, any nonnegative solution is represented uniquely by an integral on $(D \times \{0 \}) \cup (\partial_M D \times [0,T))$, where $\partial_M D$ is the Martin boundary of $…
We obtain an upper bound on the initial blow-up of nonnegative solutions of second order semilinear parabolic inequalities when a superlinear exponent in the inequalities is not too large.
Let $f :\R\to\R$ be a continuous function. We prove that under some additional assumptions on $f$ and $A:\R\to\R_{+}$, weak $\Cuno$ solutions of the differential inequality $-\diver(A(\abs{\nabla u})\nabla u)\ge f(u)$ on $\RN$ are nonnegative. Some extensions of the result in the framework of subelliptic operators on Carnot Groups are considered.
We study existence of nonnegative solutions to a nonlinear parabolic boundary value problem with a general singular lower order term and a nonnegative measure as nonhomogeneous datum, of the form $$ \begin{cases} \displaystyle u_t - Δ_p u = h(u)f+μ& \text{in}\ Ω\times (0,T),\\ u=0 &\text{on}\ \partialΩ\times (0,T),\\ u=u_0 &\text{in}\ Ω\times \{0\}, \end{cases} $$ where $Ω$ is an open bounded subset of $\mathbb{R}^N$ ($N\ge2$), $u_0$ is a nonnegative integrable function, $Δ_p$ is the $p$-laplace operator, $μ$ is a nonnegative bounded Radon measure on $Ω\times (0,T)$ and $f$ is a nonnegative fu…
We derive weighted Sobolev-Poincaré type inequalities in function spaces concerned with parabolic partial differential equations. We consider general weights depending on both space and time variables belonging to a Muckenhoupt class, so-called the parabolic $A_p$-class, where only the parabolic cubes are involved in the definition.
We show Carleman estimates, observability inequalities and null controllability results for parabolic equations with non smooth coefficients degenerating at an interior point.
In a cylinder $Ω_T=Ω\times (0,T)\subset \R^{n+1}_+$ we study the boundary behavior of nonnegative solutions of second order parabolic equations of the form \[ Hu =\sum_{i,j=1}^ma_{ij}(x,t) X_iX_ju - \p_tu = 0, \ (x,t)\in\R^{n+1}_+, \] where $X=\{X_1,...,X_m\}$ is a system of $C^\infty$ vector fields in $\Rn$ satisfying Hörmander's finite rank condition \eqref{frc}, and $Ω$ is a non-tangentially accessible domain with respect to the Carnot-Carathéodory distance $d$ induced by $X$. Concerning the matrix-valued function $A=\{a_{ij}\}$, we assume that it be real, symmetric and uniformly positive d…
Let us consider a nonlinear degenerate reaction-diffusion equation with application to climate science. After proving that the solution remains nonnegative at any time, when the initial state is nonnegative, we prove the approximate controllability between nonnegative states at any time via multiplicative controls, that is, using as control the reaction coefficient.
This paper deals with nonnegative solutions of the one dimensional degenerate parabolic equations with zero homogeneous Dirichlet boundary condition. To obtain an existence result, we prove a sharp gradient estimate of |u_x|. Besides, we investigate the behaviors of nonnegative solutions such as the quenching phenomenon, and the finite speed of propagation. Our results of the Dirichlet problem will be extended to the associated Cauchy problem. In addition, we show that the phenomenon of the instantaneous shrinking of compact support of the nonnegative solutions occurs if f satisfies some growt…
We obtain pointwise estimates for solutions of semilinear parabolic equations with a potential on connected domains both of $\mathbb R^n$ and of general Riemannian manifolds.
We study the behaviour of solutions of linear non-autonomous parabolic equations subject to Dirichlet or Neumann boundary conditions under perturbation of the domain. We prove that Mosco convergence of function spaces for non-autonomous parabolic problems is equivalent to Mosco convergence of function spaces for the corresponding elliptic problems. As a consequence, we obtain convergence of solutions of non-autonomous parabolic equations under domain perturbation by variational methods using the same characterisation of domains as in elliptic case. A similar technique can be applied to obtain …
As it is well known, the parabolic-elliptic Keller-Segel system of chemotaxis on the plane has global-in-time regular nonnegative solutions with total mass below the critical value $8π$. Solutions with mass above $8π$ blow up in a finite time. We show that the case of the parabolic-parabolic Keller-Segel is different: each mass may lead to a global-in-time-solution, even if the initial data is a finite signed measure. These solutions need not be unique, even if we limit ourselves to nonnegative solutions.
Variational inequalities, formulated on unknown dependent convex sets, are called quasi-variational inequalities (QVI). This paper is concerned with the abstract approach to a class of parabolic QVIs arising in many biochemical/mechanical problems, based on a compactness theorem for parabolic variational inequalities (cf. [9]). The prototype of our model for QVIs of parabolic type is formulated in a reflexive Banach space as the sum of the time-derivative operator under unknown convex constraints and a semimonotone operator, including a feedback system which selects a convex constraint. The ma…
This paper is devoted to investigate an interpolation inequality between the Brezis-Vázquez and Poincaré inequalities (shortly, BPV inequality) on nonnegatively curved spaces. As a model case, we first prove that the BPV inequality holds on any Minkowski space, by fully characterizing the existence and shape of its extremals. We then prove that if a complete Finsler manifold with nonnegative Ricci curvature supports the BPV inequality, then its flag curvature is identically zero. In particular, we deduce that a Berwald space of nonnegative Ricci curvature supports the BPV inequality if and onl…
In this paper, we study a nonlocal degenerate parabolic equation of order α + 2 for 0<α<2. The equation is a generalization of the one arising in the modeling of hydraulic fractures studied by Imbert and Mellet in 2011. Using the same approach, we prove the existence of solutions for this equation for 0<α<2 and for nonnegative initial data satisfying appropriate assumptions. The main difference is the compactness results due to different Sobolev embeddings. Furthermore, for α > 1, we construct a nonnegative solution for nonnegative initial data under weaker assumptions.
We consider second-order linear parabolic operators in non-divergence form that are intrinsically defined on Riemannian manifolds. In the elliptic case, Cabré proved a global Krylov-Safonov Harnack inequality under the assumption that the sectional curvature of the underlying manifold is nonnegative. Later, Kim improved Cabré's result by replacing the curvature condition by a certain condition on the distance function. Assuming essentially the same condition introduced by Kim, we establish Krylov-Safonov Harnack inequality for nonnegative solutions of the non-divergent parabolic equation. This…
Let $(u,v)$ be a nonnegative solution to the semilinear parabolic system \[ \mbox{(P)} \qquad \cases{ \partial_t u=D_1Δu+v^p, & $x\in{\bf R}^N,\,\,\,t>0,$\\ \partial_t v=D_2Δv+u^q, & $x\in{\bf R}^N,\,\,\,t>0,$\\ (u(\cdot,0),v(\cdot,0))=(μ,ν), & $x\in{\bf R}^N,$ } \] where $D_1$, $D_2>0$, $0<p\le q$ with $pq>1$ and $(μ,ν)$ is a pair of nonnegative Radon measures or nonnegative measurable functions in ${\bf R}^N$. In this paper we study sufficient conditions on the initial data for the solvability of problem~(P) and clarify optimal singularities of the initial functions for the solvability.
We study a class of fourth order nonlinear parabolic equations which include the thin-film equation and the quantum drift-diffusion model as special cases. We investigate these equations by first developing functional inequalities of the type $ \int_Ωu^{2γ-α-β}Δu^αΔu^βdx \geq c\int_Ω|Δu^γ|^2dx $, which seem to be of interest on their own right.
We are concerned with nonexistence results of nonnegative weak solutions for a class of quasilinear parabolic problems with a potential on complete noncompact Riemannian manifolds. In particular, we highlight the interplay between the geometry of the underlying manifold, the power nonlinearity and the behavior of the potential at infinity.
We consider a system of seminlinear parabolic variational inequalities with time-dependent convex obstacles. We prove the existence and uniqueness of its solution. We also provide a stochastic representation of the solution and show that it can be approximated by the penalization method. Our proofs are based upon probabilistic methods from the theory of Markov processes and the theory of backward stochastic differential equations.
We consider a family of optimal control problems where the control variable is given by a boundary condition of Neumann type. This family is governed by parabolic variational inequalities of the second kind. We prove the strong convergence of the optimal controls and state systems associated to this family to a similar optimal control problem. This work solves the open problem left by the authors in IFIP TC7 CSMO2011.
The carré du champ method is a powerful technique for proving interpolation inequalities with explicit constants in presence of a non-trivial metric on a manifold. The method applies to some classical Gagliardo-Nirenberg-Sobolev inequalities on the sphere, with optimal constants. Very nonlinear regimes close to the critical Sobolev exponent can be covered using nonlinear parabolic flows of porous medium or fast diffusion type. Considering power law weights is a natural question in relation with symmetry breaking issues for Caffarelli-Kohn-Nirenberg inequalities, but regularity estimates for a …
In this paper, we prove the Lorentz space $L^{q,p}$-estimates for gradients of very weak solutions to the linear parabolic equations with $\mathbf{A}_q$-weights $$u_t-\operatorname{div}(A(x,t)\nabla u)=\operatorname{div}(F),$$ in a bounded domain $Ω\times (0,T)\subset\mathbb{R}^{N+1}$, where $A$ has a small mean oscillation, and $Ω$ is a Lipchistz domain with a small Lipschitz constant.
We consider viscosity solutions to nonlinear uniformly parabolic equations in nondivergence form on a Riemannian manifold $M$, with the sectional curvature bounded from below by $-κ$ for $κ\geq 0$. In the elliptic case, Wang and Zhang \cite{WZ} recently extended the results of \cite{Ca} to nonlinear elliptic equations in nondivergence form on such $M$, where they obtained the Harnack inequality for classical solutions. We establish the Harnack inequality for nonnegative {\it viscosity solutions} to nonlinear uniformly {\it parabolic equations} in nondivergence form on $M$. The Harnack inequali…
We consider various versions of the obstacle and thin-obstacle problems, we interpret them as variational inequalities, with non-smooth constraint, and prove that they satisfy a new constrained Lojasiewicz inequality. The difficulty lies in the fact that, since the constraint is non-analytic, the pioneering method of L. Simon (Ann. of Math. 118(3), 1983) does not apply and we have to exploit a better understanding on the constraint itself. We then apply this inequality to two associated problems. First we combine it with an abstract result on parabolic variational inequalities, to prove the co…
In this paper, we are concerned with the uniqueness result for non-negative solutions of the higher-order Lane-Emden equations involving the GJMS operators on $\mathbb{S}^n$. Since the classical moving-plane method based on the Kelvin transform and maximum principle fails in dealing with the high-order elliptic equations in $\mathbb{S}^n$, we first employ the Mobius transform between $\mathbb{S}^n$ and $\mathbb{R}^n$, poly-harmonic average and iteration arguments to show that the higher-order Lane-Emden equation on $\mathbb{S}^n$ is equivalent to some integral equation in $\mathbb{R}^n$. Then …
Let $G=(V,E)$ be a locally finite connected weighted graph, and $Ω$ be an unbounded subset of $V$. Using Rothe's method, we study the existence of solutions for the semilinear heat equation $\partial_tu+|u|^{p-1}\cdot u=Δu~(p\ge1)$ and the parabolic variational inequality \begin{eqnarray*} \int_{Ω^\circ} \partial_tu\cdot(v-u)\,dμ\ge \int_{Ω^\circ}(Δu+f)\cdot(v-u)\,dμ\qquad\mbox{for any }v\in \mathcal{H}, \end{eqnarray*} where $\mathcal{H}=\{u\in W^{1,2}(V):u=0\mbox{ on }V\backslashΩ^\circ\}$.
We are concerned with the nonexistence of sign-changing global weak solutions for a class of semilinear parabolic differential inequalities with convection terms in exterior domains. A weight function of the form $t^α|x|^σ$ is considered in front of the power nonlinearity. Two types of non-homogeneous boundary conditions are investigated: Neumann-type and Dirichlet-type boundary conditions. Using a unified approach, for each case, we establish sufficient criteria for the nonexistence of global weak solutions. When $α=0$, the critical exponent in the sense of Fujita is obtained. This exponent i…
We prove global existence of a nonnegative weak solution to a degenerate parabolic system, which models the spreading of insoluble surfactant on a thin liquid film.
Let $(M,g)$ be an $n-$dimensional complete open Riemannian manifold with nonnegative Ricci curvature verifying $ρΔ_g ρ\geq n- 5\geq 0$, where $Δ_g$ is the Laplace-Beltrami operator on $(M,g)$ and $ρ$ is the distance function from a given point. If $(M,g)$ supports a second-order Sobolev inequality with a constant $C>0$ close to the optimal constant $K_0$ in the second-order Sobolev inequality in $\mathbb R^n$, we show that a global volume non-collapsing property holds on $(M,g)$. The latter property together with a Perelman-type construction established by Munn (J. Geom. Anal., 2010) provide s…
Let $P$ be a second-order, symmetric, and nonnegative elliptic operator with real coefficients defined on noncompact Riemannian manifold $M$, and let $V$ be a real valued function which belongs to the class of {\em small perturbation potentials} with respect to the heat kernel of $P$ in $M$. We prove that under some further assumptions (satisfying by a large classes of $P$ and $M$) the positive minimal heat kernels of $P-V$ and of $P$ on $M$ are equivalent. Moreover, the parabolic Martin boundary is stable under such perturbations, and the cones of all nonnegative solutions of the correspondin…
We study the behavior as $t\to 0^+$ of nonnegative functions \begin{equation}\label{0.1} u\in C^{2,1} (\mathbb{R}^n\times (0,1)) \cap L^λ(\mathbb{R}^n\times (0,1)),\quad n\ge 1, \end{equation} satisfying the parabolic Choquard-Pekar type inequalities \begin{equation}\label{0.2} 0\leq u_t-Δu\leq(Φ^{α/n}*u^λ)u^σ\quad \text{ in }B_1 (0)\times (0,1) \end{equation} where $α\in(0,n+2)$, $λ>0$, and $σ\geq0$ are constants, $Φ$ is the heat kernel, and $*$ is the convolution operation in $\mathbb{R}^n\times (0,1)$. We provide optimal conditions on $α,λ$, and $σ$ such that nonnegative solutions $u$ satis…
By using optimal mass transport theory we prove a sharp isoperimetric inequality in ${\sf CD} (0,N)$ metric measure spaces assuming an asymptotic volume growth at infinity. Our result extends recently proven isoperimetric inequalities for normed spaces and Riemannian manifolds to a nonsmooth framework. In the case of $n$-dimensional Riemannian manifolds with nonnegative Ricci curvature, we outline an alternative proof of the rigidity result of S. Brendle (2021). As applications of the isoperimetric inequality, we establish Sobolev and Rayleigh-Faber-Krahn inequalities with explicit sharp const…
Combining the sharp isoperimetric inequality established by Z. Balogh and A. Kristály [Math. Ann., in press, doi:10.1007/s00208-022-02380-1] with an anisotropic symmetrization argument, we establish sharp Morrey-Sobolev inequalities on $n$-dimensional Finsler manifolds having nonnegative $n$-Ricci curvature. A byproduct of this method is a Hardy-Sobolev-type inequality in the same geometric setting. As applications, by using variational arguments, we guarantee the existence/multiplicity of solutions for certain eigenvalue problems and elliptic PDEs involving the Finsler-Laplace operator. Our r…
We study the behavior for $t$ small and positive of $C^{2,1}$ nonnegative solutions $u(x,t)$ and $v(x,t)$ of the system \[0\leq u_t-Δu\leq v^λ\] \[0\leq v_t-Δv\leq u^σ\] in $Ω\times (0,1)$, where $λ$ and $σ$ are nonnegative constants and $Ω$ is an open subset of ${\mathbb R}^n$, $n\ge 1$. We provide optimal conditions on $λ$ and $σ$ such that solutions of this system satisfy pointwise bounds in compact subsets of $Ω$ as $t\to 0^+$. Our approach relies on new pointwise bounds for nonlinear heat potentials which are the parabolic analog of similar bounds for nonlinear Riesz potentials.
We establish weak Harnack inequalities for positive, weak supersolutions to certain doubly degenerate parabolic equations. The prototype of this kind of equations is $$\partial_tu-\operatorname{div}|u|^{m-1}|Du|^{p-2}Du=0,\quad p>2,\quad m+p>3.$$ Our proof is based on Caccioppoli inequalities, De Giorgi's estimates and Moser's iterative method.
In this paper we consider initial boundary value problem for nonlinear nonlocal parabolic equation with absorption under nonlinear nonlocal boundary condition and nonnegative initial datum. We prove comparison principle, global existence and blow-up of solutions.
We investigate parabolic Muckenhoupt weights and functions of bounded mean oscillation (BMO) related to nonlinear parabolic partial differential equations. The main result gives a full characterization of weak and strong type weighted norm inequalities for parabolic forward in time maximal operators. In addition, we give a Jones type factorization result for the parabolic Muckenhoupt weights and a Coifman-Rochberg type characterization of the parabolic BMO from Moser's seminal paper through parabolic Muckenhoupt weights and maximal functions.
We prove global existence of nonnegative weak solutions for a strongly coupled, fourth order degenerate parabolic system governing the motion of two thin fluid layers in a porous medium when capillarity is the sole driving mechanism.
We investigate nonnegative solutions $u(x,t)$ and $v(x,t)$ of the nonlinear system of inequalities \[0\leq(\partial_t -Δ)^αu\leq v^λ\] \[ 0\leq (\partial_t -Δ)^βv\leq u^σ\] in $\mathbb{R}^n \times\mathbb{R}$, $n\geq 1$, satisfying the initial conditions \[ u=v=0\quad\text{ in }\mathbb{R}^n \times(-\infty,0) \] where $λ,σ,α$, and $β$ are positive constants. Specifically, using the definition of the fractional heat operator $(\partial_t-Δ)^α$ given in \cite{T}, we obtain, when they exist, optimal pointwise upper bounds on $\mathbb{R}^n \times(0,\infty)$ for nonnegative solutions $u$ and $v$ of t…
