By numerically exact calculations of spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg models on small clusters, we demonstrate that quantum entanglement between subsystems $A$ and $B$ in a pure ground state of a whole system $A+B$ can induce thermal equilibrium in subsystem $A$. Here, the whole system is bipartitoned with the entanglement cut that covers the entire volume of subsystem $A$. Temperature ${\cal T}_{A}$ of subsystem $A$ is not a parameter but can be determined from the entanglement von Neumann entropy ${\cal S}_{A}$ and the total energy ${\cal E}_{A}$ of subsystem $A$ calculated for the ground state of the whole system. We show that temperature ${\cal T}_{A}$ can be derived by minimizing the relative entropy for the reduced density matrix operator of subsystem $A$ and the Gibbs state (i.e., thermodynamic density matrix operator) of subsystem $A$ with respect to the coupling strength between subsystems $A$ and $B$. Temperature ${\cal T}_{A}$ is essentially identical to the thermodynamic temperature, for which the entropy and the internal energy evaluated using the canonical ensemble in statistical mechanics for the isolated subsystem $A$ agree numerically with the entanglement entropy ${\cal S}_{A}$ and the total energy ${\cal E}_{A}$ of subsystem $A$.Fidelity calculations ascertain that the reduced density matrix operator of subsystem $A$ for the pure but entangled ground state of the whole system $A+B$ matches, within a maximally $1.5\%$ error in the finite size clusters studied, the thermodynamic density matrix operator of subsystem $A$ at temperature ${\cal T}_{A}$. We argue that quantum fluctuation in an entangled pure state can mimic thermal fluctuation in a subsystem. We also provide two simple but nontrivial analytical examples of free bosons and free fermions for which these statements are exact. We furthermore discuss implications and possible applications of our finding.
It was recently observed that in certain thermalizing many-body systems, measuring the complement of a subsystem that thermalized to infinite temperature in a suitable orthonormal basis gives rise to approximate quantum state k-designs as post-measurement states on the subsystem. We prove that this emergence of approximate k-designs holds true in every large system where some small subsystem is close to being maximally mixed. On a technical level we show that any high-dimensional purification of an approximately maximally mixed state induces an approximate quantum state k-design when measured …
The entanglement entropy of subsystems of typical eigenstates of quantum many-body Hamiltonians has been recently conjectured to be a diagnostic of quantum chaos and integrability. In quantum chaotic systems it has been found to behave as in typical pure states, while in integrable systems it has been found to behave as in typical pure Gaussian states. In this tutorial, we provide a pedagogical introduction to known results about the entanglement entropy of subsystems of typical pure states and of typical pure Gaussian states. They both exhibit a leading term that scales with the volume of the…

We provide further analytical insights into the newly established noninteracting (free-fermion) Page curve, focusing on both the kinematic and dynamical aspects. First, we unveil the underlying canonical typicality and atypicality for random free-fermion states. The former appears for a small subsystem and is exponentially weaker than the well-known result in the interacting case. The latter explains why the free-fermion Page curve differs remarkably from the interacting one when the subsystem is macroscopically large, i.e., comparable with the entire system. Second, we find that the free-ferm…
The understanding of the emergence of equilibrium statistical mechanics has progressed significantly thanks to developments from typicality, canonical and dynamical, and from the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis. Here we focus on a nonequilibrium scenario in which two nonintegrable systems prepared in different states are locally and non-extensively coupled to each other. Using both perturbative analysis and numerical exact simulations of up to 28 spin systems, we demonstrate the typical emergence of nonequilibrium (quasi-)steady current for weak coupling between the subsystems. We also id…

Spontaneous synchronisation is a collective phenomenon that can occur in both dynamical classical and quantum systems. Here, we analyse the spontaneous synchronisation dynamics of vibrations assisting energy transfer in a bio-inspired system. We find the emergence of a constant non-zero `synchronisation phase' between synchronised vibrational displacements as the natural frequencies of the oscillators are detuned. This phase difference arises from the asymmetric participation of local modes in the long-lived synchronised state. Furthermore, we investigate the relationships between the synchron…
We study the question of how to decompose Hilbert space into a preferred tensor-product factorization without any pre-existing structure other than a Hamiltonian operator, in particular the case of a bipartite decomposition into "system" and "environment." Such a decomposition can be defined by looking for subsystems that exhibit quasi-classical behavior. The correct decomposition is one in which pointer states of the system are relatively robust against environmental monitoring (their entanglement with the environment does not continually and dramatically increase) and remain localized around…
