We introduce a generalization of entanglement based on the idea that entanglement is relative to a distinguished subspace of observables rather than a distinguished subsystem decomposition. A pure quantum state is entangled relative to such a subspace if its expectations are a proper mixture of those of other states. Many information-theoretic aspects of entanglement can be extended to the general setting, suggesting new ways of measuring and classifying entanglement in multipartite systems. By going beyond the distinguishable-subsystem framework, generalized entanglement also provides novel tools for probing quantum correlations in interacting many-body systems.
The possibility of immunized and improving the entanglement of accelerated systems via local filtering is discussed. The maximum bounds of entanglement depend on the dimensions of the accelerated and the filtered subsystems. If the small dimensional subsystem is accelerated and the large dimensional subsystem is filtered, one can get a long-lived entanglement. Moreover, if the larger subsystem is accelerated, then by filtering any subsystem, the upper bounds of entanglement of the filtered state are larger then that for the initial states. For any accelerated subsystem, the entanglement always …
Entanglement plays a pervasive role nowadays throughout quantum information science, and at the same time provides a bridging notion between quantum information science and fields as diverse as condensed-matter theory, quantum gravity, and quantum foundations. In recent years, a notion of ''Generalized Entanglement'' (GE) has emerged, based on the idea that entanglement may be directly defined through expectation values of preferred observables -- without reference to a preferred subsystem decomposition. Preferred observables capture the physically relevant point of view, as defined by dynamic…
In this contribution, we investigate the entanglement behavior of a composite system consists of two different dimensional subsystems in non-inertial frames. In particular, we consider a composite system of qubit(two-dimensional) subsystem, and qutrit, (three-dimensional) subsystem. The degree of entanglement is quantified for different cases, where it is assumed that the two-subsystems are simultaneously or non- simultaneously accelerated. The entanglement decays as the acceleration of any subsystem increases. In general, the decay rate of entanglement increases as the dimensional of the accel…
We present a strategy to control the evolution of a quantum system. The novel aspect of this protocol is the use of a \emph{single auxiliary subsystem}. Two applications are given, one which allows for state preservation and another which controls the degree of entanglement of a given initial state.
We study the entanglement dynamics of two qubits, each of which is embedded into its local amplitude-damping reservoir, and the entanglement distribution among all the bipartite subsystems including qubit-qubit, qubit-reservoir, and reservoir-reservoir. It is found that the entanglement can be stably distributed among all components, which is much different to the result obtained under the Born-Markovian approximation by C. E. López {\it et al.} [Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{101}, 080503 (2008)], and particularly it also satisfies an identity. Our unified treatment includes the previous results as…
The entanglement in a pure state of N qudits (d-dimensional distinguishable quantum particles) can be characterised by specifying how entangled its subsystems are. A generally mixed subsystem of m qudits is obtained by tracing over the other N-m qudits. We examine the entanglement in the space of mixed states of m qudits. We show that for a typical pure state of N qudits, its subsystems smaller than N/3 qudits will have a positive partial transpose and hence are separable or bound entangled. Additionally, our numerical results show that the probability of finding entangled subsystems smaller t…
A recently proposed purification method, in which the Zeno-like measurements of a subsystem can bring about a distillation of another subsystem in interaction with the former, is utilized to yield entangled states between distant systems. It is shown that the measurements of a two-level system locally interacting with other two spatially separated not coupled subsystems, can distill entangled states from the latter irrespectively of the initial states of the two subsystems.
The size of quantum information -- or entanglement -- transfer rates between subsystems is a generic question in problems ranging from decoherence in quantum computation and sensing, to quantum underpinnings of thermodynamics, to the behavior of quantum black holes. We investigate such rates for given couplings between subsystems, for sufficiently random subsystem evolution, and find evidence for a conjectured relation of these rates to the size of the couplings. This provides a direct connection between entanglement transfer and the microphysical couplings responsible for it.
We introduce the subsystem symmetry-preserving real-space entanglement renormalization group and apply it to study bifurcating flows generated by linear and fractal subsystem symmetry-protected topological phases in two spatial dimensions. We classify all bifurcating fixed points that are given by subsystem symmetric cluster states with two qubits per unit cell. In particular, we find that the square lattice cluster state is a quotient-bifurcating fixed point, while the cluster states derived from Yoshida's first order fractal spin liquid models are self-bifurcating fixed points. We discuss th…
We present a notion of generalized entanglement which goes beyond the conventional definition based on quantum subsystems. This is accomplished by directly defining entanglement as a property of quantum states relative to a distinguished set of observables singled out by Physics. While recovering standard entanglement as a special case, our notion allows for substantially broader generality and flexibility, being applicable, in particular, to situations where existing tools are not directly useful.
We consider the two-spin subsystem entanglement for eigenstates of the Hamiltonian \[ H= \sum_{1\leq j< k \leq N} (\frac{1}{r_{j,k}})^α {\mathbf σ}_j\cdot {\mathbf σ}_k \] for a ring of $N$ spins 1/2 with asssociated spin vector operator $(\hbar /2){\bf σ}_j$ for the $j$-th spin. Here $r_{j,k}$ is the chord-distance betwen sites $j$ and $k$. The case $α=2$ corresponds to the solvable Haldane-Shastry model whose spectrum has very high degeneracies not present for $α\neq 2$. Two spin subsystem entanglement shows high sensistivity and distinguishes $α=2$ from $α\neq 2$. There is no entanglement b…

We show that entanglement can always arise in the interaction of an arbitrarily large system in any mixed state with a single qubit in a pure state. This small initial purity is enough to enforce entanglement even when the total entropy is close to maximum. We demonstrate this feature using the Jaynes-Cummings interaction of a two level atom in a pure state with a field in a thermal state at an arbitrarily high temperature. We find the time and temperature variation of a lower bound on the amount of entanglement produced and study the classical correlations quantified by the mutual information…
We demonstrate that linear combinations of subregion entropies with canceling boundary terms, commonly used to calculate the topological entanglement entropy, may suffer from spurious nontopological contributions even in models with zero correlation length. These spurious contributions are due to a specific kind of long-range string order, and persist throughout certain subsystem symmetry-protected phases. We introduce an entropic quantity that measures the presence of such order, and hence should serve as an order parameter for the aforementioned phases.
A method is introduced whereby two non-interacting quantum subsystems, that each interact with a third subsystem, are entangled via repeated projective measurements of the state of the third subsystem. A variety of physical examples are presented. The method can be used to establish long range entanglement between distant parties in one parallel measurement step, thus obviating the need for entanglement swapping.
There should be quantum vacuum fluctuations of spacetime itself, if we accept that the basic quantum principles we are already familiar with apply as well to a quantum theory of gravity. In this paper, we study, in linearized quantum gravity, the quantum entanglement generation at the neighborhood of the initial time between two independent gravitationally polarizable two-level subsystems caused by fluctuating quantum vacuum gravitational fields in the framework of open quantum systems. A bath of fluctuating quantum vacuum gravitational fields serves as an environment that provides indirect in…
The entanglement measure for multiqudits is proposed. This measure calculates the partial entanglement distributed by subsystems and the complete entanglement of the total system. This shows that we need to measure the subsystem entanglements to explain the full description for multiqudit entanglement. Furthermore, we extend the entanglement measure to mixed multiqubits and the higher dimension Hilbert spaces.
Analytical solution and entanglement swapping of a double Jaynes-Cummings model in non-Markovian environments are investigated by the timeconvolutionless master equation method. We obtain the analytical solution of this model and discuss in detail the influence of atom-cavity coupling, non-Markovian effect and initial state purity on entanglement dynamics. The results show that, in the non-Markovian environments, the entanglement between two cavities can be swapped to other bipartite subsystems by interaction between an atom and its own cavity. Due to the dissipation of environment, the entang…
Fisher-Hartwig formula has been successful applied to describe the von Neumann and Rényi entropies of a block of spins in the ground state of XX spin chain. It was based on a determinant representation. In this paper, we generalize the free fermion method to obtain an exact formulation for the entropy of any finite subsystem in XX spin chain. Based on this, we derive a determinant representation of the entropy of multiple disjoint intervals in the ground state of $XX$ model.
By numerically exact calculations of spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg models on small clusters, we demonstrate that quantum entanglement between subsystems $A$ and $B$ in a pure ground state of a whole system $A+B$ can induce thermal equilibrium in subsystem $A$. Here, the whole system is bipartitoned with the entanglement cut that covers the entire volume of subsystem $A$. Temperature ${\cal T}_{A}$ of subsystem $A$ is not a parameter but can be determined from the entanglement von Neumann entropy ${\cal S}_{A}$ and the total energy ${\cal E}_{A}$ of subsystem $A$ calculated for the grou…
The notion of entanglement of quantum states is usually defined with respect to a fixed bipartition. Indeed, a global basis change can always map an entangled state to a separable one. The situation is however different when considering a set of states. In this work we define the notion of an "absolutely entangled set" of quantum states: for any possible choice of global basis, at least one of the states in the set is entangled. Hence, for all bipartitions, i.e. any possible definition of the subsystems, the set features entanglement. We present a minimum example of this phenomenon, with a set…
The relation between genuine multipartite entanglement in the pure state of a collection of N qubits and the nonclassical correlations in its two-qubit subsystems is studied. Quantum discord is used as the quantifier of nonclassical correlations in the subsystem while the generalised geometric measure (GGM) [Phys. Rev. A. 81, 012308 (2010)] is used to quantify global entanglement in the N-qubit state. While no definite discernible dependence between the two can be found for randomly generated global states, for those with additional structure like weighted graph states we find that local disco…
We show that spin squeezing implies entanglement for quantum tripartite-state, where the subsystem of the bipartite-state is identical. We study the relation between spin squeezing parameters and entanglement through the quantum entropy of a system starts initially in a pure state when the cavity is binomial. We show that spin squeezing can be a convenient tool to give some insight into the subsystems entanglement dynamics when the bipartite subsystem interacts simultaneously with the cavity field subsystem, specially when the interaction occurs off-resonantly without and with a nonlinear medi…
Permutation symmetries of multipartite quantum states are defined only when the constituent subsystems are of equal dimensions. In this work we extend this notion of permutation symmetry to heterogeneous systems, that is, systems composed of subsystems having unequal dimensions. Given a tensor product space of $k$ subsystems (of arbitrary dimensions) and a permutation operation $σ$ over $k$ symbols, these states are such that they have identical decompositions (up to an overall phase) in the given tensor product space and the tensor product space obtained by the permuting the subsystems by $σ$…
We formulate dynamical phase transitions in subsystems embedded in larger quantum systems. Introducing the entanglement echo as an overlap of the initial and instantaneous entanglement ground states, we show its analytic structure after a quench provides natural definition of dynamical phase transitions in the subsystem. These transitions come in two varieties, the entanglement-type transitions and the bulk-type Loschmidt transitions. The entanglement-type transitions arise from periodic reorganization of quantum correlations between the subsystem and its environment, manifesting in instantane…
A model of discrete dynamics of entanglement of bipartite quantum state is considered. It involves a global unitary dynamics of the system and periodic actions of local bistochastic or decaying channel. For initially pure states the decay of entanglement is accompanied with an increase of von Neumann entropy of the system. We observe and discuss revivals of entanglement due to unitary interaction of both subsystems. For some mixed states having different marginal entropies of both subsystems (one of them larger than the global entropy and the other one one smaller) we find an asymmetry in spee…
We present an entanglement criterion for multiqubits by using the quantum correlation tensors which rely on the expectation values of the Pauli operators for a multiqubit state. Our criterion explains not only the total entanglement of the system but also the partial entanglement in subsystems. It shows that we have to consider the subsystem entanglements in order to obtain the full description for multiqubit entanglements. Furthermore, we offer an extension of the entanglement to multiqudits.
In certain special circumstances, such as in the vicinity of a black hole or in a uniformly accelerating frame, vacuum fluctuations appear to give rise to a finite-temperature environment. This effect, currently without experimental confirmation, can be interpreted as a manifestation of quantum entanglement after tracing out vacuum modes in an unobserved region. In this work, we identify a class of experimentally accessible quantum systems where thermal density matrices emerge from vacuum entanglement. We show that reduced density matrices of lower-dimensional subsystems embedded in $D$-dimens…
We assess the performance of an entanglement indicator which can be obtained directly from tomograms, avoiding state reconstruction procedures. In earlier work, we have examined this tomographic entanglement indicator, and a variant obtained from it, in the context of continuous variable systems. It has been shown that, in multipartite systems of radiation fields, these indicators fare as well as standard measures of entanglement. In this paper, we assess these indicators in the case of two generic hybrid quantum systems, the double Jaynes-Cummings model and the double Tavis-Cummings model usi…
Subsystem symmetry protected topological (SSPT) order is a type of quantum order that is protected by symmetries acting on lower-dimensional subsystems of the entire system. In this paper, we show how SSPT order can be characterized and detected by a constant correction to the entanglement area law, similar to the topological entanglement entropy. Focusing on the paradigmatic two-dimensional cluster phase as an example, we use tensor network methods to give an analytic argument that almost all states in the phase exhibit the same correction to the area law, such that this correction may be use…
We study production of entanglement with highly-mixed states. We find that entanglement between highly mixed states can be generated via a direct unitary interaction even when both states have purities arbitrarily close to zero. This indicates that purity of a subsystem is not required for entanglement generation. Our result is in contrast to previous studies where the importance of the subsystem purity was emphasized.
Entanglement degradation caused by the Unruh effect is discussed for the tripartite GHZ or W states constructed by modes of a non-interacting quantum field viewed by one inertial observer and two uniformly accelerated observers. For fermionic states, the Unruh effect even for infinite accelerations cannot completely remove the entanglement. However, for the bosonic states, the situation is different and the entanglement vanishes asymptotically. Also, the entanglement is studied for the bipartite subsystems. While for the GHZ states all the bipartite subsystems are identically disentangled, for…

Based on Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger ($GHZ$) and $W$ initial states, the tripartite entanglement of a fermionic system under the amplitude damping channel and in depolarizing noise when two subsystems accelerated is investigated. Unlike the case of two-qubit system in which sudden death occurs easily, we find here that the sudden death never occurs even all subsystems are under the noise environment. We note that both acceleration and environment can destroy the symmetry between the subsystems, but the effect of environment is much stronger than that of acceleration. We also show that an entan…
We investigate the correlations between different bipartitions of an exactly solvable one-dimensional many-body Moshinsky model consisting of Nn "nuclei" and Ne "electrons". We study the dependence of entanglement on the inter-particle interaction strength, on the number of particles, and on the particle masses. Consistent with kinematic intuition, the entanglement between two subsystems vanishes when the subsystems have very different masses, while it attains its maximal value for subsystems of comparable mass. We show how this entanglement feature can be inferred by means of the Born-Oppenhe…
We derive the timescale for two initially pure subsystems to become entangled with each other through an arbitrary Hamiltonian that couples them. The entanglement timescale is inversely proportional to the "correlated uncertainty" between the two subsystems, a quantity which we will define and analyze in this paper. Our result is still applicable when one of the subsystems started in an arbitrarily mixed state, thus it generalizes the well-known "decoherence timescale" while coupled to a thermal state.
The entanglement production in bipartite quantum systems is studied for initially unentangled product eigenstates of the subsystems, which are assumed to be quantum chaotic. Based on a perturbative computation of the Schmidt eigenvalues of the reduced density matrix, explicit expressions for the time-dependence of entanglement entropies, including the von Neumann entropy, are given. An appropriate re-scaling of time and the entropies by their saturation values leads a universal curve, independent of the interaction. The extension to the non-perturbative regime is performed using a recursively …
The dynamics of a cascaded system that consists of two atom-cavity subsystems is studied by using the quantum trajectory method. Considering the two atom-cavity subsystems driven by a Raman interaction, analytical solutions are obtained. Subsequently, the entanglement evolution between the two atoms is studied, and it is shown that the entanglement can be stored by switching off the Raman coupling. By monitoring the radiation field, the entanglement between the two atoms can be enhanced.
We derive universal entanglement entropy and Schmidt eigenvalue behaviors for the eigenstates of two quantum chaotic systems coupled with a weak interaction. The progression from a lack of entanglement in the noninteracting limit to the entanglement expected of fully randomized states in the opposite limit is governed by the single scaling transition parameter, $Λ$. The behaviors apply equally well to few- and many-body systems, e.g.\ interacting particles in quantum dots, spin chains, coupled quantum maps, and Floquet systems as long as their subsystems are quantum chaotic, and not localized …
The combination of different quantum systems may allow the exploration of the distinctive features of each system for the investigation of fundamental phenomena as well as for quantum technologies. In this work we consider a setup consisting of an atomic ensemble enclosed within a laser-driven optomechanical cavity, having the moving mirror further (capacitively) coupled to a low frequency LC circuit. This constitutes a four-partite optoelectromechanical quantum system containing three macroscopic quantum subsystems of a different nature, viz, the atomic ensemble, the massive mirror and the LC…
We propose a simple model of classical open system consisting of two subsystems all stationary states of which correspond to phase synchronization between the subsystems. The model is generalized to quantum systems in a finite-dimensional Hilbert space. The analysis of the simplest two qubit version of the quantum model shows that all its stationary states are nonseparable.
The entanglement fidelity provides a measure of how well the entanglement between two subsystems is preserved in a quantum process. By using a simple model we show that in some cases this quantity in its original definition fails in the measurement of the entanglement preserving. On the contrary, the modified entanglement fidelity, obtained by using a proper local unitary transformation on a subsystem, is shown to exhibit the behavior similar to that of the concurrence in the quantum evolution.
Based on the complementarity relation between entanglement of a composite system and the purity of a subsystem, we propose a simple method to measure the amount of entanglement. The method can be applied to a bipartite system in a pure state of any arbitrary dimension. It requires only single qudit rotations and straightforward probability measurements performed on one of the subsystems, and can thus be easily implemented experimentally using linear optical devices.
The dynamics of a cascaded system that consists of two atom-cavity subsystems is studied by using the quantum trajectory method. Unwanted losses are included, such as photon absorption and scattering by the cavity mirrors and spontaneous emission of the atoms. Considering an initially excited two-level atom in the source subsystem, analytical solutions are obtained. The entanglement evolution is studied for the two atoms and for the two intracavity fields.
We show the violation of the entanglement-area law for bosonic systems with Bose surfaces. For bosonic systems with gapless factorized energy dispersions on a N^d Cartesian lattice in d-dimension, e.g., the exciton Bose liquid in two dimension, we explicitly show that a belt subsystem with width L preserving translational symmetry along d-1 Cartesian axes has leading entanglement entropy (N^{d-1}/3)ln L. Using this result, the strong subadditivity inequality, and lattice symmetries, we bound the entanglement entropy of a rectangular subsystem from below and above showing a logarithmic violatio…
We investigate the advantages of extracting the degree of entanglement in bipartite systems directly from tomograms, as it is the latter that are readily obtained from experiments. This would provide a superior alternative to the standard procedure of assessing the extent of entanglement between subsystems after employing the machinery of state reconstruction from the tomogram. The latter is both cumbersome and involves statistical methods, while a direct inference about entanglement from the tomogram circumvents these limitations. In an earlier paper, we had identified a procedure to obtain a…
We consider the variation of von Neumann entropy of subsystem reduced states of general many- body lattice spin systems due to local quantum quenches. We obtain Lieb-Robinson-like bounds that are independent of the subsystem volume. The main assumptions are that the Hamiltonian satisfies a Lieb-Robinson bound and that the volume of spheres on the lattice grows at most exponentially with their radius. More specifically, the bound exponentially increases with time but exponentially decreases with the distance between the subsystem and the region where the quench takes place. The fact that the bo…
In this paper we address the question: where in configuration space is the entanglement between two particles located? We present a thought-experiment, equally applicable to discrete or continuous-variable systems, in which one or both parties makes a preliminary measurement of the state with only enough resolution to determine whether or not the particle resides in a chosen region, before attempting to make use of the entanglement. We argue that this provides an operational answer to the question of how much entanglement was originally located within the chosen region. We illustrate the appro…
We study the robustness of the GHZ (or ``cat'') class of multi-partite states under decoherence. The noise model is described by a general completely positive map for qubits independently coupled to the environment. In particular, the robustness of N-party entanglement is studied in the large N limit when (a) the number of spatially separated subsystems is fixed but the size of each subsystem becomes large (b) the size of the subsystems is fixed while their number becomes arbitrarily large. We obtain conditions for entanglement in these two cases. Among our other results, we show that the pari…
We present a family of correlations constraints that apply to all multipartite quantum systems of finite dimension. The size of this family is exponential in the number of subsystems. We obtain these relations by defining and investigating the generalized state inversion map. This map provides a systematic way to generate local unitary invariants of degree two in the state and is directly linked to the shadow inequalities proved by Rains [IEEE Trans. Inf. Theory 46, 54 (2000)]. The constraints are stated in terms of linear inequalities for the linear entropies of the subsystems. For pure quant…
We identify subsystem fluctuations (variances) that measure entanglement in an arbitrary bipartite pure state. These fluctuations are of observables that generalize the notion of polarization to an arbitrary N-level subsystem. We express this polarization fluctuation in terms of subsystem purity and other entanglement measures. The derived fluctuation-entanglement relation is evaluated for the ground states of a one-dimensional free fermion gas and the Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki spin chain. Our results provide a framework for experimentally measuring entanglement using Stern-Gerlach-type stat…
We show that there is a unique maximal decomposition of a pure multi-partite (N>2) quantum state into a sum of states which are "locally orthogonal" in the sense that the local reduced state for a term in the sum lives in its own orthogonal subspace for each subsystem. Observers can make local measurements on any subsystem and determine which "branch" they are on. The Shannon entropy of the resulting branch weights defines a new measure of global, GHZ-like entanglement, which is insensitive to local pairwise entangling operations and vanishes when there is no piece of information recorded at e…
Bipartite entanglement in the ground state of a chain of $N$ quantum spins can be quantified either by computing pairwise concurrence or by dividing the chain into two complementary subsystems. In the latter case the smaller subsystem is usually a single spin or a block of adjacent spins and the entanglement differentiates between critical and non-critical regimes. Here we extend this approach by considering a more general setting: our smaller subsystem $S_A$ consists of a {\it comb} of $L$ spins, spaced $p$ sites apart. Our results are thus not restricted to a simple `area law', but contain n…
Unitary control of qudits can improve the collective spin squeezing of an atomic ensemble. Preparing the atoms in a state with large quantum fluctuations in magnetization strengthens the entangling Faraday interaction. The resulting increase in interatomic entanglement can be converted into metrologically useful spin squeezing. Further control can squeeze the internal atomic spin without compromising entanglement, providing an overall multiplicative factor in the collective squeezing. We model the effects of optical pumping and study the tradeoffs between enhanced entanglement and decoherence.…
