We study two-state discrimination in chaotic quantum systems. Assuming that one of two $N$-qubit pure states has been randomly selected, the probability to correctly identify the selected state from an optimally chosen experiment involving a subset of $N-N_B$ qubits is given by the trace-distance of the states, with $N_B$ qubits partially traced out. In the thermodynamic limit $N\to\infty$, the average subsystem trace-distance for random pure states makes a sharp, first order transition from unity to zero at $f=1/2$, as the fraction $f=N_B/N$ of unmeasured qubits is increased. We analytically calculate the corresponding crossover for finite numbers $N$ of qubits, study how it is affected by the presence of local conservation laws, and test our predictions against exact diagonalization of models for many-body chaos.

We investigate the subsystem Schatten distance, trace distance and fidelity between the quasiparticle excited states of the free and the nearest-neighbor coupled fermionic and bosonic chains and the ferromagnetic phase of the spin-1/2 XXX chain. The results support the scenario that in the scaling limit when one excited quasiparticle has a large energy it decouples from the ground state and when two excited quasiparticles have a large momentum difference they decouple from each other. From the quasiparticle picture, we get the universal subsystem distances that are valid when both the large en…
We study the excited state Rényi entropy and subsystem Schatten distance in the two-dimensional free massless non-compact bosonic field theory, which is a conformal field theory. The discretization of the free non-compact bosonic theory gives the harmonic chain with local couplings. We consider the field theory excited states that correspond to the harmonic chain states with excitations of more than one quasiparticle, which we call multi-particle states. This extends the previous work by the same authors to more general excited states. In the field theory we obtain the exact Rényi entropy and …
The interpretation of the concept of reduced state is a subtle issue that has relevant consequences when the task is the interpretation of quantum mechanics itself. The aim of this paper is to argue that reduced states are not the quantum states of subsystems in the same sense as quantum states are states of the whole composite system. After clearly stating the problem, our argument is developed in three stages. First, we consider the phenomenon of environment-induced decoherence as an example of the case in which the subsystems interact with each other; we show that decoherence does not solve…
Leakage is a particularly damaging error that occurs when a qubit state falls out of its two-level computational subspace. Compared to independent depolarizing noise, leaked qubits may produce many more configurations of harmful correlated errors during error-correction. In this work, we investigate different local codes in the low-error regime of a leakage gate error model. When restricting to bare-ancilla extraction, we observe that subsystem codes are good candidates for handling leakage, as their locality can limit damaging correlated errors. As a case study, we compare subspace surface co…

So-called average subsystem entropies are defined by first taking partial traces over some pure state to define density matrices, then calculating the subsystem entropies, and finally averaging over the pure states to define the average subsystem entropies. These quantities are standard tools in quantum information theory, most typically applied in bipartite systems. We shall first present some extensions to the usual bipartite analysis, (including a calculation of the average tangle, and a bound on the average concurrence), follow this with some useful results for tripartite systems, and fina…
For any bipartite state, how strongly can one subsystem be quantum correlated with another? Using the Koashi-Winter relation, we study the upper bound of purified quantum discord, which is given by the sum of the von Neumann entropy of the unmeasured subsystem and the entanglement of formation shared between the unmeasured subsystem with the environment. In particular, we find that the Luo et al.'s conjecture on the quantum correlations and the Lindblad conjecture are all ture, when the entanglement of formation vanishes. Let the difference between the left discord and the right discord be cap…
Mixed states are introduced in physics in order to express our ignorance about the actual state of a physical system and are represented in standard quantum mechanics (QM) by density operators. Such operators also appear if one considers a (pure) entangled state of a compound system $Ω$ and performs partial traces on the projection operator representing it. Yet, they do not represent mixed states (or proper mixtures) of the subsystems in this case, but improper mixtures, since the coefficients in the convex sums expressing them never bear the ignorance interpretation. Hence, one cannot attribu…
We study the effect of pure dephasing on the entanglement of a pair of two-level subsystems (qubits). We show that partial dephasing induced by a super-Ohmic reservoir, corresponding to well-established properties of confined charge states and phonons in semiconductors, may lead to complete disentanglement. We show also that the disentanglement effect increases with growing distance between the two subsystems.
We consider the two-spin subsystem entanglement for eigenstates of the Hamiltonian \[ H= \sum_{1\leq j< k \leq N} (\frac{1}{r_{j,k}})^α {\mathbf σ}_j\cdot {\mathbf σ}_k \] for a ring of $N$ spins 1/2 with asssociated spin vector operator $(\hbar /2){\bf σ}_j$ for the $j$-th spin. Here $r_{j,k}$ is the chord-distance betwen sites $j$ and $k$. The case $α=2$ corresponds to the solvable Haldane-Shastry model whose spectrum has very high degeneracies not present for $α\neq 2$. Two spin subsystem entanglement shows high sensistivity and distinguishes $α=2$ from $α\neq 2$. There is no entanglement b…
We show how to construct hybrid quantum-classical codes from subsystem codes by encoding the classical information into the gauge qudits using gauge fixing. Unlike previous work on hybrid codes, we allow for two separate minimum distances, one for the quantum information and one for the classical information. We give an explicit construction of hybrid codes from two classical linear codes using Bacon-Casaccino subsystem codes, as well as several new examples of good hybrid code.
In the present paper, the trace distance is exposed within the quantum operations formalism. The definition of the trace distance in terms of a maximum over all quantum operations is given. It is shown that for any pair of different states, there are an uncountably infinite number of maximizing quantum operations. Conversely, for any operation of the described type, there are an uncountably infinite number of those pairs of states that the maximum is reached by the operation. A behavior of the trace distance under considered operations is studied. Relations and distinctions between the trace d…
We investigate a weak version of subsystem eigenstate thermalization hypothesis (ETH) for a two-dimensional large central charge conformal field theory by comparing the local equivalence of high energy state and thermal state of canonical ensemble. We evaluate the single-interval Rényi entropy and entanglement entropy for a heavy primary state in short interval expansion. We verify the results of Rényi entropy by two different replica methods. We find nontrivial results at the eighth order of short interval expansion, which include an infinite number of higher order terms in the large central …
We investigate the exact dynamics of trace distance discord by considering two qubits under dephasing whose states belong to a class of $X$ states beyond Bell diagonal form. The necessary condition for the occurrence of freezing trace distance discord is found and compared with that of entropic discord. For an illustration, we consider two interacting qubits coupled to independent reservoirs and demonstrate these dynamical properties of trace distance discord. It is interesting to find that the freezing trace distance discord exists even for $X$ states without maximally mixed marginals and can…
We discuss an application of the random matrix theory in the context of estimating the bipartite entanglement of a quantum system. We discuss how the Wishart ensemble (the earliest studied random matrix ensemble) appears in this quantum problem. The eigenvalues of the reduced density matrix of one of the subsystems have similar statistical properties as those of the Wishart matrices, except that their {\em trace is constrained to be unity}. We focus here on the smallest eigenvalue which serves as an important measure of entanglement between the two subsystems. In the hard edge case (when the t…
We study subsystem codes whose gauge group has local generators in the 2D geometry. It is shown that there exists a family of such codes defined on lattices of size LxL with the number of logical qubits k and the minimum distance d both proportional to L. The gauge group of these codes involves only two-qubit generators of type XX and ZZ coupling nearest neighbor qubits (and some auxiliary one-qubit generators). Our proof is not constructive as it relies on a certain version of the Gilbert-Varshamov bound for classical codes. Along the way we introduce and study properties of generalized Bacon…
The role of initial qubit-environment correlations on trace distance between two qubit states is studied in the framework of non--Markovian pure dephasing. The growth of mixedness of reduced state quantified by linear entropy is shown to be related to the degree of initial qubit--environment correlations.
We investigate the quantum phase transitions of spin systems in one and two dimensions by employing trace distance and multipartite entanglement along with real-space quantum renormalization group method. As illustration examples, a one-dimensional and a two-dimensional $XY$ models are considered. It is shown that the quantum phase transitions of these spin-chain systems can be revealed by the singular behaviors of the first derivatives of renormalized trace distance and multipartite entanglement in the thermodynamics limit. Moreover, we find the renormalized trace distance and multipartite en…
We investigate the modified trace distance measure of coherence recently introduced in [Phys. Rev. A 94, 060302(R) (2016)]. We show that for any single-qubit state, the modified trace norm of coherence is equal to the $l_{1}$-norm of coherence. For any $d$-dimensional quantum system, an analytical formula of this measure for a class of maximally coherent mixed states is provided. The trade-off relation between the coherence quantified by the new measure and the mixedness quantified by the trace norm is also discussed. Furthermore, we explore the relation between the modified trace distance mea…
We use an alternative approach to study the quantum phase transition in a coupled cavity lattice at finite temperature. As an illustrative example, we investigate the behaviors of the trace distance and quantum phase transition in a Jaynes-Cummings lattice at finite temperature. It is found that the trace distance can be used to describe the critical point of the quantum phase transition at finite low temperatures and the critical points are sensitive to the atom-field interaction strength and the detuning factor. For non-equilibrium states, we demonstrate that the time evolution of the trace …
Recently, trace distance measure of coherence has been proposed for characterizing the coherence of a given quantum state. However, it seems difficult to estimate the optimal incoherent state for high dimensional states. An explicit expression for the trace distance measure of coherence for a class of qudit states is provided. We show that the closest incoherent state to the class of qudit states is just the diagonal matrix obtained from it by deleting all off-diagonal elements. It is also shown that the measure of coherence induced by trace distance can act as a measure of coherence for this …
We study the distance of two wave functions under chaotic time evolution. The two initial states are differed only by a local perturbation. To be entitled "chaos" the distance should have a rapid growth afterwards. Instead of focusing on the entire wave function, we measure the distance $d^2(t)$ by investigating the difference of two reduced density matrices of the subsystem $A$ that is spatially separated from the local perturbation. This distance $d^2(t)$ grows with time and eventually saturates to a small constant. We interpret the distance growth in terms of operator scrambling picture, wh…
We provide a bound for the trace distance between two quantum states. The lower bound is based on the superfidelity, which provides the upper bound on quantum fidelity. One of the advantages of the presented bound is that it can be estimated using a simple measurement procedure. We also compare this bound with the one provided in terms of fidelity.
Recently, the much-used trace distance of coherence was shown to not be a proper measure of coherence, so a modification of it was proposed. We derive an explicit formula for this modified trace distance of coherence on pure states. Our formula shows that, despite satisfying the axioms of proper coherence measures, it is likely not a good measure to use, since it is maximal (equal to 1) on all except for an exponentially-small (in the dimension of the space) fraction of pure states.
We investigate the speed limit of the state transformation in open quantum systems described by the Lindblad type quantum master equation. We obtain universal bounds of the total entropy production described by the trace distance between the initial and final states in the interaction picture. Our bounds can be tighter than the bound of Vu and Hasegawa [Phys. Rev. Lett. 126, 010601 (2021)] which measures the distance by the eigenvalues of the initial and final states: This distance is less than or equal to the trace distance. For this reason, our results can significantly improve Vu-Hasegawa's…
We formulate and prove a de Finetti representation theorem for finitely exchangeable states of a quantum system consisting of k infinite-dimensional subsystems. The theorem is valid for states that can be written as the partial trace of a pure state chosen from a family of subsets C_n of the full symmetric subspace for $n$ subsystems. We show that such states become arbitrarily close to mixtures of pure power states as n increases. We give a second equivalent characterization of the family C_n.
We use an alternative method to investigate the quantum criticality at zero and finite temperature using trace distance along with the density matrix renormalization group. It is shown that the average correlation measured by the trace distance between the system block and environment block in a DMRG sweep is able to detect the critical points of quantum phase transitions at finite temperature. As illustrative examples, we study spin-1 XXZ chains with uniaxial single-ion-type anisotropy and the Heisenberg spin chain with staggered coupling and external magnetic field. It is found that the trac…
In this work we introduce two code families, which we call the heavy hexagon code and heavy square code. Both code families are implemented by assigning physical data and ancilla qubits to both vertices and edges of low degree graphs. Such a layout is particularly suitable for superconducting qubit architectures to minimize frequency collisions and crosstalk. In some cases, frequency collisions can be reduced by several orders of magnitude. The heavy hexagon code is a hybrid surface/Bacon-Shor code mapped onto a (heavy) hexagonal lattice whereas the heavy square code is the surface code mapped…
We devise and experimentally realize a procedure capable of detecting and distinguishing quantum discord and classical correlations as well the presence of factorized states in a joint system-environment setting. Our scheme builds on recent theoretical results showing how the distinguishability between two reduced states of a quantum system in a bipartite setting can convey important information about the correlations present in the bipartite state and the interaction between the subsystems. The two addressed subsystems are the polarization and spatial degrees of freedom of the signal beam gen…
The spin geometry theorem of Penrose is extended from $SU(2)$ to $E(3)$ (Euclidean) invariant elementary quantum mechanical systems. Using the natural decomposition of the total angular momentum into its spin and orbital parts, the \emph{distance} between the centre-of-mass lines of the elementary subsystems of a classical composite system can be recovered from their \emph{relative orbital angular momenta} by $E(3)$-invariant classical observables. Motivated by this observation, an expression for the `empirical distance' between the elementary subsystems of a \emph{composite quantum mechanical…
We investigate the coherence measures induced by fidelity and trace norm, based on the recent proposed coherence quantification in [Phys. Rev. Lett. 113, 140401, 2014]. We show that the fidelity of coherence does not in general satisfy the monotonicity requirement as a measure of coherence under the subselection of measurements condition. We find that the trace norm of coherence can act as a measure of coherence for qubit case and some special class of qutrits.
Hilbert - Schmidt and trace norm geometric quantum discord are compared with regard to their behavior during local time evolution. We consider the system of independent two - level atoms with time evolution given by the dissipative process of spontaneous emission. It is explicitly shown that the Hilbert - Schmidt norm discord has nonphysical properties with respect to such local evolution and cannot serve as a reasonable measure of quantum correlations and the better choice is to use trace norm discord as such a measure.
The classical version of Mandelstam-Tamm speed limit based on the Wigner function in phase space is reported by B. Shanahan et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 120, 070401 (2018)]. In this paper, the Margolus-Levitin speed limit across the quantum-to-classical transition is given in phase space based on the trace distance. The Margolus-Levitin speed limit is set by the Schatten L1 norm of the generator of time dependent evolution for both the quantum and classical domains. As an example, the time-dependent harmonic oscillator is considered to illustrate the result.
The trace distance between two quantum states, $ρ$ and $σ$, is an operationally meaningful quantity in quantum information theory. However, in general it is difficult to compute, involving the diagonalization of $ρ- σ$. In contrast, the Hilbert-Schmidt distance can be computed without diagonalization, although it is less operationally significant. Here, we relate the trace distance and the Hilbert-Schmidt distance with a bound that is particularly strong when either $ρ$ or $σ$ is low rank. Our bound is stronger than the bound one could obtain via the norm equivalence of the Frobenius and trace…

The trace distance between two states of an open quantum system quantifies their distinguishability, and for a fixed environmental state can increase above its initial value only in the presence of initial system-environment correlations. We provide for the first time experimental evidence of such a behavior. In our all-optical apparatus we exploit spontaneous parametric down conversion as a source of polarization entangled states, and a spatial light modulator to introduce in a general fashion correlations between the polarization and the momentum degrees of freedom, which act as environment.

Measurements performed on distant parts of an entangled quantum state can generate correlations incompatible with classical theories respecting the assumption of local causality. This is the phenomenon known as quantum non-locality that, apart from its fundamental role, can also be put to practical use in applications such as cryptography and distributed computing. Clearly, developing ways of quantifying non-locality is an important primitive in this scenario. Here, we propose to quantify the non-locality of a given probability distribution via its trace distance to the set of classical correl…
New quantum distance is introduced as a half-sum of several singular values of difference between two density operators. This is, up to factor, the metric induced by so-called Ky Fan norm. The partitioned trace distances enjoy similar properties to the standard trace distance, including the unitary invariance, the strong convexity and the close relations to the classical distances. The partitioned distances cannot increase under quantum operations of certain kind including bistochastic maps. All the basic properties are re-formulated as majorization relations. Possible applications to quantum …

It is known that a reliable geometric quantifier of discord-like correlations can be built by employing the so-called trace distance. This is used to measure how far the state under investigation is from the closest "classical-quantum" one. To date, the explicit calculation of this indicator for two qubits was accomplished only for states such that the reduced density matrix of the measured party is maximally mixed, a class that includes Bell-diagonal states. Here, we first reduce the required optimization for a general two-qubit state to the minimization of an explicit two-variable function. …
One of the most surprising consequences of quantum mechanics is the entanglement of two or more distant particles. In an entangled EPR two-particle system, the value of the momentum (position) for neither single subsystem is determined. However, if one of the subsystems is measured to have a certain momentum (position), the other subsystem is determined to have a unique corresponding value, despite the distance between them. This peculiar behavior of an entangled quantum system has surprisingly been observed experimentally in two-photon temporal and spatial correlation measurements, such as gh…
Cryptographic security of quantum key distribution is currently based on a trace distance criterion. The widespread misinterpretation of the criterion as failure probability and also its actual scope have been discussed previously. Recently its distinguishability advantage interpretation is re-emphasized as an operational guarantee, and the failure probability misinterpretation is maintained with a further failure probability per bit interpretation. In this paper we explain the basic perpetuating error as a confusion on the correspondence between mathematics and reality. We note that the assig…
We employ the concepts of local quantum uncertainty and geometric quantum discord based on the trace norm to investigate the environmental effects on quantum correlations of two bipartite quantum systems. The first one concerns a two-qubit system coupled with two independent bosonic reservoirs. We show that the trace discord exhibits frozen phenomenon contrarily to local quantum uncertainty. The second scenario deals with a two-level system, initially prepared in a separable state, interacting with a quantized electromagnetic radiation. Our results show that there exists an exchange of quantum…
We locate the set of pairs $(ρ_{1},ρ_{2})$ of Gaussian states of a single mode electromagnetic field that exhibit maximal trace distance subject to the energy constraint $\langle a^{\dagger}a \rangle_{ρ_{1}}=\langle a^{\dagger}a \rangle_{ρ_{2}} = E$. Any such pair allows to achieve the minimum possible error in the task of binary distinguishability of two single mode, isoenergetic Gaussian quantum signals. In particular, we show that the logarithm of the minimal error probability for distinguishing two maximally trace distant, isoenergetic Gaussian states scales as $-E^{2}$, less than the achi…
