In this letter, a nonlocal effect for a bipartite system which is induced by a local cyclic evolution of one of its subsystem is suggested. This effect vanishes when the system is at a disentangled pure state but can be observed for some disentangled mixed states. As a paradigm, we study the effect for the system of two qubits in detail. It is interesting that the effect is directly related to the degree of entanglement for pure state of qubit pairs. Furthermore, we suggest a Bell-type experiment to measure this nonlocal effect for qubit pairs.
A bipartite state is called lazy if the entropy rate of one subsystem is vanishing for any coupling to the other subsystem. In this paper, we provide a necessary and sufficient condition for a finite-dimensional bipartite state to be lazy, and prove that a two-mode Gaussian state is lazy if and only if it is a direct product state.
Through the quantum trajectory approach, we calculate the geometric phase acquired by a bipartite system subjected to decoherence. The subsystems that compose the bipartite system interact with each other, and then are entangled in the evolution. The geometric phase due to the quantum jump for both the bipartite system and its subsystems are calculated and analyzed. As an example, we present two coupled spin-$\frac 1 2 $ particles to detail the calculations.
Having the quantum correlations in a general bipartite state in mind, the information accessible by simultaneous measurement on both subsystems is shown never to exceed the information accessible by measurement on one subsystem, which, in turn is proved not to exceed the von Neumann mutual information. A particular pair of (opposite- subsystem) observables are shown to be responsible both for the amount of quasi-classical correlations and for that of the purely quantum entanglement in the pure-state case: the former via simultaneous subsystem measurements, and the latter through the entropy of…
Based on the complementarity relation between entanglement of a composite system and the purity of a subsystem, we propose a simple method to measure the amount of entanglement. The method can be applied to a bipartite system in a pure state of any arbitrary dimension. It requires only single qudit rotations and straightforward probability measurements performed on one of the subsystems, and can thus be easily implemented experimentally using linear optical devices.
We propose a general approach to characterize states of a bipartite system composed by a fully controllable and an unaccessible subsystems. The method is based on the measuring interference between states of the uncontrollable subsystem obtained after projecting an appropriately transformed bipartite state on the basis of the accessible subsystem by local operations.
Based on a proposed coherence measure, we show that the local coherence of a bipartite quantum pure state (coherence of its reduced density matrix) is exactly the same as the minimal average co- herence with all potential pure-state realizations under consideration. In particular, it is shown that bipartite concurrence of pure states just captures the maximal difference between local coherence and the average coherence of one subsystem induced by local operations on the other subsystem with the assistance of classical communications, which provides an alternative operational meaning for bipart…
For a bipartite quantum system consisting of subsystems A and B it was shown by Zhang et al. (Physics Letters A 376 (2012) 3588-3592) that the amount of classical correlations, which is used to define the quantum discord, is known to be bounded from above by the minimum of the von Neumann entropies of the subsystems A and B. We provide an alternative proof that is shorter and more transparent as it works without defining correlation matrices.
We investigate the advantages of extracting the degree of entanglement in bipartite systems directly from tomograms, as it is the latter that are readily obtained from experiments. This would provide a superior alternative to the standard procedure of assessing the extent of entanglement between subsystems after employing the machinery of state reconstruction from the tomogram. The latter is both cumbersome and involves statistical methods, while a direct inference about entanglement from the tomogram circumvents these limitations. In an earlier paper, we had identified a procedure to obtain a…
Analytical solution and entanglement swapping of a double Jaynes-Cummings model in non-Markovian environments are investigated by the timeconvolutionless master equation method. We obtain the analytical solution of this model and discuss in detail the influence of atom-cavity coupling, non-Markovian effect and initial state purity on entanglement dynamics. The results show that, in the non-Markovian environments, the entanglement between two cavities can be swapped to other bipartite subsystems by interaction between an atom and its own cavity. Due to the dissipation of environment, the entang…
We study a bipartite collective spin-$1$ model with exchange interaction between the spins. The bipartite nature of the model manifests itself by the spins being divided into two equal-sized subsystems; within each subsystem the spin-spin interactions are of the same strength, across the subsystems they are also equal, but the two coupling values within and across the subsystem are different. Such a set-up is inspired by recent experiments with ultracold atoms. Using the $\mathrm{SU}(3)$-symmetry of the exchange interaction and the permutation symmetry within the subsystems, we can employ repr…
In relation of observable and quantum state, the entity $I_C$ from previous work quantifies simultaneously coherence, incompatibility and quantumness. In this article its application to quantum correlations in bipartite states is studied. It is shown that Zurek's quantum discord can always be expressed as excess coherence information (global minus local). Strong and weak zero-discord cases are distinguished and investigated in terms of necessary and sufficient and sufficient conditions respectively. A unique string of relevant subsystem observables, each a function of the next, for "interrogat…
We study the entanglement of formation for arbitrary dimensional bipartite mixed unknown states. Experimentally measurable lower and upper bounds for entanglement of formation are derived.
Entanglement of pure states of bipartite quantum systems has been shown to have a unique measure in terms of the von Neumann entropy of the reduced states of either of its subsystems. The measure is established under entanglement manipulation of an asymptotically large number of copies of the states. In this paper, different asymptotic measures of entanglement assigned to arbitrary sequences of bipartite pure states are shown to coincide only when the sequence is information stable, in terms of the quantum spectral information rates of the sequence of subsystem states. Additional bounds on the…
There are several important bipartite systems of great interest in condensed matter physics and in quantum information science. In condensed matter systems, the subsystems are examined traditionally by using the Green function and mean-field-like methods based on the Heisenberg representation. In quantum information science, the subsystems are handled by composite density matrix, its marginals describing the subsystems, and the Kraus representation to elucidate the subsystem properties. In this work, a relationship is first established between the two techniques which appear to be distinct at …
The distribution of quantum coherence in multipartite systems is one of the basic problems in the resource theory of coherence. While the usual coherence measures are defined on a single system and cannot capture the nonlocal correlation between subsystems, in order to deal with the distribution of coherence it is crucial to quantify the coherence in bipartite systems properly. Here, we introduce incoherent-quantum (IQ) coherence measures on bipartite systems, which can characterize the correlations between systems. According to the IQ coherence measures on bipartite systems, we find the distr…
We consider a composite open quantum system consisting of a fast subsystem coupled to a slow one. Using the time-scale separation, we develop an adiabatic elimination technique to derive at any order the reduced model describing the slow subsystem. The method, based on an asymptotic expansion and geometric singular perturbation theory, ensures the physical interpretation of the reduced second-order model by giving the reduced dynamics in a Lindblad form and the state reduction in Kraus map form. We give explicit second-order formulas for Hamiltonian or cascade coupling between the two subsyste…
We investigate the average entropy of a subsystem within a global unitary orbit of a given mixed bipartite state in the finite-dimensional space. Without working out the closed-form expression of such average entropy for the mixed state case, we provide an analytical lower bound for this average entropy. In deriving this analytical lower bound, we get some useful by-products of independent interest. We also apply these results to estimate average correlation along a global unitary orbit of a given mixed bipartite state. When the notion of von Neumann entropy is replaced by linear entropy, the …

Amount of entanglement carried by a quantum bipartite state is usually evaluated in terms of concurrence (see Ref. 1). We give a physical interpretation of concurrence that reveals a way of its direct measurement and discuss possible generalizations.
Entanglement degradation caused by the Unruh effect is discussed for the tripartite GHZ or W states constructed by modes of a non-interacting quantum field viewed by one inertial observer and two uniformly accelerated observers. For fermionic states, the Unruh effect even for infinite accelerations cannot completely remove the entanglement. However, for the bosonic states, the situation is different and the entanglement vanishes asymptotically. Also, the entanglement is studied for the bipartite subsystems. While for the GHZ states all the bipartite subsystems are identically disentangled, for…
The present review presents the authors previous results on the topic from the title in a new light. Most of the previous results were obtained using the techniques of antilinear Hilbert-Schmidt mappings of one Hilbert pace into another, which is unknown and unused in the literature. This, naturally, diminished the impact of the results. In this article the results are derived anew with standard techniques. The topics listed at the end of the Introduction, are expounded in 9 theorems, 5 propositions etc. Partial scalar product and partial trace methods are used throughout. Further relevant res…
We identify subsystem fluctuations (variances) that measure entanglement in an arbitrary bipartite pure state. These fluctuations are of observables that generalize the notion of polarization to an arbitrary N-level subsystem. We express this polarization fluctuation in terms of subsystem purity and other entanglement measures. The derived fluctuation-entanglement relation is evaluated for the ground states of a one-dimensional free fermion gas and the Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki spin chain. Our results provide a framework for experimentally measuring entanglement using Stern-Gerlach-type stat…
We establish strict upper bounds on local quantum uncertainty (LQU) and skew information associated with state conversion via certain quantum channels. Specifically, we obtain a bound on the achievable LQU for bipartite channels whose Kraus operators commute with nondegenerate von Neumann measurements on the first subsystem, and this LQU bound is expressed in terms of the skew information for the first subsystem. Furthermore, we establish a bound on the skew information of one subsystem obtained from any initial bipartite state subject to any quantum steering channel, and this bound is express…
We show that bipartite concurrence for rank-2 mixed states of qubits is written by an observable which can be exactly and directly measurable in experiment by local projective measurements, provided that four copies of the composite quantum system are available. In addition, for a tripartite quantum pure state of qubits, the 3-tangle is also shown to be measurable only by projective measurements on the reduced density matrices of a pair of qubits conditioned on four copies of the state.
Several nonclassical effects displayed by wave packets subject to generic nonlinear Hamiltonians can be identified and assessed directly from tomograms without attempting to reconstruct the Wigner function or the density matrix explicitly. We have demonstrated this for both single-mode and bipartite systems. We have shown that a wide spectrum of effects such as the revival phenomena, quadrature squeezing and Hong-Mandel and Hillery type higher-order squeezing in both the single-mode system and the double-well Bose-Einstein condensate can be obtained from appropriate tomograms in a straightforw…
We devise and experimentally realize a procedure capable of detecting and distinguishing quantum discord and classical correlations as well the presence of factorized states in a joint system-environment setting. Our scheme builds on recent theoretical results showing how the distinguishability between two reduced states of a quantum system in a bipartite setting can convey important information about the correlations present in the bipartite state and the interaction between the subsystems. The two addressed subsystems are the polarization and spatial degrees of freedom of the signal beam gen…
So-called average subsystem entropies are defined by first taking partial traces over some pure state to define density matrices, then calculating the subsystem entropies, and finally averaging over the pure states to define the average subsystem entropies. These quantities are standard tools in quantum information theory, most typically applied in bipartite systems. We shall first present some extensions to the usual bipartite analysis, (including a calculation of the average tangle, and a bound on the average concurrence), follow this with some useful results for tripartite systems, and fina…
Schroedinger's disentanglement [E. Schroedinger, Proc. Cambridge Phil. Soc. 31, 555 (1935)], i. e., remote state decomposition, as a physical way to study entanglement, is carried one step further with respect to previous work in investigating the qualitative side of entanglement in any bipartite state vector. Remote measurement (or, equivalently, remote orthogonal state decomposition) from previous work is generalized to remote linearly-independent complete state decomposition both in the non-selective and the selective versions. The results are displayed in terms of commutative square diagra…
Consistency with relativistic causality narrows down dramatically the class of measurable observables. We argue that by weakening the preparation role of ideal measurements, many of these observables become measurable. Particularly, we show by applying entanglement assisted remote operations, that all Hermitian observable of a $2\times2$-dimensional bipartite system are measurable.
In the topic of perfect local distinguishability of orthogonal multipartite quantum states, most results obtained so far pertain to bipartite systems whose subsystems are of specific dimensions. In contrast very few results for bipartite systems whose subsystems are of arbitrary dimensions, are known. This is because a rich variety of (algebraic or geometric) structure is exhibited by different sets of orthogonal states owing to which it is difficult to associate some common property underlying them all, i.e., a common property that would play a crucial role in the local distinguishability of …
We explore how entanglement of a general bipartite system evolves when one subsystem undergoes the action of an arbitrary noisy channel. It is found that the dynamics of entanglement for general bipartite systems under the influence of such channel is determined by the channel's action on the maximally entangled state, which includes as a special case the results for two-qubit systems [Nature Physics 4, 99 (2008)]. In particular, for multi-qubit or qubit-qudit systems, we get a general factorization law for evolution equation of entanglement with one qubit being subject to a noisy channel. Our…
It is known that an interacting bipartite system evolves as an entangled state in general, even if it is initially in a separable state. Due to the entanglement of the state, the geometric phase of the system is not equal to the sum of the geometric phases of its two subsystems. However, there may exist a set of states in which the nonlocal interaction does not affect the separability of the states, and the geometric phase of the bipartite system is then always equal to the sum of the geometric phases of its subsystems. In this paper, we illustrate this point by investigating a well known phys…
Out-of-time-order correlators (OTOC), vigorously being explored as a measure of quantum chaos and information scrambling, is studied here in the natural and simplest multi-particle context of bipartite systems. We show that two strongly chaotic and weakly interacting subsystems display two distinct phases in the growth of OTOC.The first is dominated by intra-subsystem scrambling, when an exponential growth with a positive Lyapunov exponent is observed till the Ehrenfest time. This phase is essentially independent of the interaction, while the second phase is an interaction dominated exponentia…
For distinguishing quantum states sampled from a fixed ensemble, the gap in bipartite and single-party distinguishability can be interpreted as a nonlocality of the ensemble. In this paper, we consider bipartite state discrimination in a composite system consisting of $N$ subsystems, where each subsystem is shared between two parties and the state of each subsystem is randomly sampled from a particular ensemble comprising the Bell states. We show that the success probability of perfectly identifying the state converges to $1$ as $N\rightarrow\infty$ if the entropy of the probability distributi…
We study the entanglement dynamics of two qubits, each of which is embedded into its local amplitude-damping reservoir, and the entanglement distribution among all the bipartite subsystems including qubit-qubit, qubit-reservoir, and reservoir-reservoir. It is found that the entanglement can be stably distributed among all components, which is much different to the result obtained under the Born-Markovian approximation by C. E. López {\it et al.} [Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{101}, 080503 (2008)], and particularly it also satisfies an identity. Our unified treatment includes the previous results as…
We discuss an application of the random matrix theory in the context of estimating the bipartite entanglement of a quantum system. We discuss how the Wishart ensemble (the earliest studied random matrix ensemble) appears in this quantum problem. The eigenvalues of the reduced density matrix of one of the subsystems have similar statistical properties as those of the Wishart matrices, except that their {\em trace is constrained to be unity}. We focus here on the smallest eigenvalue which serves as an important measure of entanglement between the two subsystems. In the hard edge case (when the t…
The principle of local distinguishability states that an arbitrary physical state of a bipartite system can be determined by the combined statistics of local measurements performed on the subsystems. A necessary and sufficient requirement for the local measurements is that each one must be able to distinguish between all pairs of states of the respective subsystems. We show that if the task is changed into the determination of an arbitrary bipartite pure state, then at least in certain cases it is possible to restrict to local measurements which can distintinguish all pure states but not all s…
Many three-party correlations, including some that are commonly described as genuinely tripartite nonlocal, can be simulated by a network of underlying subsystems that display only bipartite nonsignaling nonlocal behavior. Quantum mechanics predicts three-party correlations that admit no such simulation, suggesting there are versions of nonlocality in nature transcending the phenomenon of bipartite nonsignaling nonlocality. This paper introduces a rigorous framework for analyzing tripartite correlations that can be simulated by bipartite-only networks. We confirm that expected properties of so…
We propose a entanglement measure for pure $M \otimes N$ bipartite quantum states. We obtain the measure by generalizing the equivalent measure for a $2 \otimes 2$ system, via a $2 \otimes 3$ system, to the general bipartite case. The measure emphasizes the role Bell states have, both for forming the measure, and for experimentally measuring the entanglement. The form of the measure is similar to generalized concurrence. In the case of $2 \otimes 3$ systems, we prove that our measure, that is directly measurable, equals the concurrence. It is also shown that in order to measure the entanglemen…
Recently, we proposed a method for the local detection of quantum correlations on the basis of local measurements and state tomography at different instances in time [Phys. Rev. Lett. 107, 180402 (2011)]. The method allows for the detection of quantum discord in bipartite systems when access is restricted to only one of the subsystems. Here, we elaborate the details of this method and provide applications to specific physical models. In particular, we discuss the performance of the scheme for generic complex systems by investigating thermal equilibrium states corresponding to randomly generate…
Weak measurements done on a subsystem of a bipartite system having both classical and nonClassical correlations between its components can potentially reveal information about the other subsystem with minimal disturbance to the overall state. We use weak quantum discord and the fidelity between the initial bipartite state and the state after measurement to construct a cost function that accounts for both the amount of information revealed about the other system as well as the disturbance to the overall state. We investigate the behaviour of the cost function for families of two qubit states an…
We prove that a pure entangled state of two subsystems with equal spin is equivalent to a two-mode spin-squeezed state under local operations except for a set of bipartite states with measure zero, and we provide a counterexample to the generalization of this result to two subsystems of unequal spin.
We advocate the step change in properties of discrete $d$-level quantum systems, between $d=2$ and $d\geq 3$. Qubit systems, or multipartite systems containing qubit subsystem, are exceptional in their relative simplicity. One faces a step in complexity in valuating measures of quantum correlations for qutrits and then other higher dimensional qudits. There is a growing number of arguments leading to such conclusion: recently found no-go theorem for generalization of the Peres-Horodecki's PPT criterion \cite{sko}, change in geometry of state spaces of qubit and higher degree qudits (the so cal…
The classical and quantum dynamics of two particles constrained on $S^1$ is discussed via Dirac's approach. We show that when state is maximally entangled between two subsystems, the product of dispersion in the measurement reduces. We also quantify the upper bound on the external field $\vec{B}$ such that $\vec{B}\geq\vec{B}_{upper}$ implies no reduction in the product of dispersion pertaining to one subsystem. Further, we report on the cut-off value of the external field $\vec{B}_{cutoff}$, above which the bipartite entanglement is lost and there exists a direct relationship between uncertai…
We fully characterize bipartite entanglement-annihilating (EA) channels that destroy entanglement of any state shared by subsystems and, thus, should be avoided in any entanglement-enabled experiment. Our approach relies on extending the problem to EA positive maps, the cone of which remains invariant under concatenation with partially positive maps. Due to this invariancy, positive EA maps adopt a well characterization and their intersection with completely positive trace-preserving maps results in the set of EA channels. In addition to a general description, we also provide sufficient operat…
We investigate bipartite entanglement in spin-1/2 systems on a generic lattice. For states that are an equal superposition of elements of a group $G$ of spin flips acting on the fully polarized state $\ket{0}^{\otimes n}$, we find that the von Neumann entropy depends only on the boundary between the two subsystems $A$ and $B$. These states are stabilized by the group $G$. A physical realization of such states is given by the ground state manifold of the Kitaev's model on a Riemann surface of genus $\mathfrak{g}$. For a square lattice, we find that the entropy of entanglement is bounded from ab…
Given a bipartite system, correlations between its subsystems can be understood as information that each one carries about the other. In order to give a model-independent description of secure information disposal, we propose the paradigm of private quantum decoupling, corresponding to locally reducing correlations in a given bipartite quantum state without transferring them to the environment. In this framework, the concept of private local randomness naturally arises as a resource, and total correlations get divided into eliminable and ineliminable ones. We prove upper and lower bounds on th…
A simple relation is introduced for concurrence to describe how much the entanglement of bipartite system is at least left if either (or both) subsystem undergoes an arbitrary physical process. This provides a lower bound for concurrence of mixed states (pure states are included) in contrast to the upper bound given by Konrad et al [Nature Physics \textbf{4}, 99 (2008)]. Our results are also suitable for a general high dimensional bipartite quantum systems.

We investigate the decoherence of a spin 1/2 subsystem weakly coupled to an environment of many spins 1/2 with and without mutual coupling. The total system is closed, its state is pure and evolves under Schroedinger dynamics. Nevertheless, the considered spin typically reaches a quasi-stationary equilibrium state. Here we show that this state depends strongly on the coupling to the environment on the one hand and on the coupling within the environmental spins on the other. In particular we focus on spin star and spin ring-star geometries to investigate the effect of intra-environmental coupli…
