Through the quantum trajectory approach, we calculate the geometric phase acquired by a bipartite system subjected to decoherence. The subsystems that compose the bipartite system interact with each other, and then are entangled in the evolution. The geometric phase due to the quantum jump for both the bipartite system and its subsystems are calculated and analyzed. As an example, we present two coupled spin-$\frac 1 2 $ particles to detail the calculations.
Our previous work about algebraic-geometric invariants of the mixed states are extended and a stronger separability criterion is given. We also show that the Schmidt number of pure states in bipartite quantum systems, a classical concept, is actually an algebraic-geometric invariant.
The influence of intersubsystem coupling on the cyclic adiabatic geometric phase in bipartite systems is investigated. We examine the geometric phase effects for two uniaxially coupled spin$-{1/2}$ particles, both driven by a slowly rotating magnetic field. It is demonstrated that the relation between the geometric phase and the solid angle enclosed by the magnetic field is broken by the spin-spin coupling, in particular leading to a quenching effect on the geometric phase in the strong coupling limit.
The Berry phase of a bipartite system described by a Heisenberg XXZ model driven by a one-site magnetic field is investigated. The effect of the Dzyaloshinski-Moriya (DM) anisotropic interaction on the Berry phase is discussed. It is found that the DM interaction affects the Berry phase monotonously, and can also cause sudden change of the Berry phase for some weak magnetic field cases.
We use singular value decomposition to derive a tight lower bound for geometric discord of arbitrary bipartite states. In a single shot this also leads to an upper bound of measurement-induced non locality which in turn yields that for Werner and isotropic states the two measures coincide. We also emphasize that our lower bound is saturated for all $2\otimes n$ states. Using this we show that both the generalized Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger and $W$ states of $N$ qubits satisfy monogamy of geometric discord. Indeed, the same holds for all $N$-qubit pure states which are equivalent to $W$ states…
In this work we propose the geometric mean of bipartite concurrences as a genuine multipartite entanglement measure. This measure achieves the maximum value for absolutely maximally entangled states and has desirable properties for quantifying potential quantum resources. The simplicity and symmetry in the definition facilitates its computation for various multipartite entangled states including the GHZ states and the $W$ states. With explicit examples we show that our measure results in distinct entanglement orderings from other measures, and can detect differences in certain types of genuine…
The geometric phase (GP) for bipartite systems in transverse external magnetic fields is investigated in this paper. Two different situations have been studied. We first consider two non-interacting particles. The results show that because of entanglement, the geometric phase is very different from that of the non-entangled case. When the initial state is a Werner state, the geometric phase is, in general, zero and moreover the singularity of the geometric phase may appear with a proper evolution time. We next study the geometric phase when intra-couplings appear and choose Werner states as th…
The degree to which a pure quantum state is entangled can be characterized by the distance or angle to the nearest unentangled state. This geometric measure of entanglement, already present in a number of settings (see Shimony 1995 and Barnum and Linden 2001), is explored for bipartite and multipartite pure and mixed states. The measure is determined analytically for arbitrary two-qubit mixed states and for generalized Werner and isotropic states, and is also applied to certain multipartite mixed states. In particular, a detailed analysis is given for arbitrary mixtures of three-qubit GHZ, W a…
Any set of pure states living in an given Hilbert space possesses a natural and unique metric --the Haar measure-- on the group $U(N)$ of unitary matrices. However, there is no specific measure induced on the set of eigenvalues $Δ$ of any density matrix $ρ$. Therefore, a general approach to the global properties of mixed states depends on the specific metric defined on $Δ$. In the present work we shall employ a simple measure on $Δ$ that has the advantage of possessing a clear geometric visualization whenever discussing how arbitrary states are distributed according to some measure of mixednes…
We study the role of driving in an initial maximally entangled state evolving under the presence of a structured environment in a weak and strong regime. We focus on the enhancement and degradation of maximal Concurrence when the system is driven on and out of resonance for a general evolution, as well as the effect of adding a transverse coupling among the particles of the model. We further investigate the role of driving in the acquisition of a geometric phase for the maximally entangled state. As the model studied herein can be used to model experimental situations such as hybrid quantum cl…
We calculate the geometric phase of a bipartite two-level system coupled to an external environment. We analyze the reduced density matrix for an arbitrary initial state of the composite system and compute the correction to the unitary geometric phase through a kinematic approach. In all cases considered, we observe a similar structure as a function of the degree of the entanglement of the initial state. Further, we compute the entanglement entropy and concurrence of the bipartite state and analyze if there is any relation among these quantities and the geometric phase acquired during the nonu…
We introduce the entanglement gauge describing the combined effects of local operations and nonlocal unitary transformations on bipartite quantum systems. The entanglement gauge exploits the invariance of nonlocal properties for bipartite systems under local (gauge) transformations. This new formalism yields observable effects arising from the gauge geometry of the bipartite system. In particular, we propose a non-Abelian gauge theory realized via two separated spatial modes of the quantized electromagnetic field manipulated by linear optics. In this linear optical realization, a bi-partite st…
We present a bipartite two-level system coupled to electromagnetic quantum vacuum fluctuations through a general dipolar coupling. We derive the master equation in the framework of open quantum systems, assuming an environment composed of (i) solely vacuum fluctuations and (ii) the vacuum fluctuations and a conducting plate located at a fixed distance from the bipartite system. For both cases considered, we study the dynamics of the bipartite system and the temporal evolution of the concurrence of an initial entangled bipartite state. We further analyze the generation of entanglement due to th…
We investigate the equivalence of bipartite quantum mixed states under local unitary transformations by introducing representation classes from a geometrical approach. It is shown that two bipartite mixed states are equivalent under local unitary transformations if and only if they have the same representation class. Detailed examples are given on calculating representation classes.
The geometric discord $\mathcal{D}$ of a state is a measure of the quantumness of the state and the negativity $\mathcal{N}$ is a measure of the entanglement of a state. It was proved by D. Girolami and G. Adesso that for states on $\mathbb{C}^2\otimes\mathbb{C}^2$, the geometric discord is always greater than or equal to the square of the negativity and conjectured that this holds in general. S. Rana and P. Parashar showed that this relation does not hold for all states on $\mathbb{C}^2\otimes\mathbb{C}^n$ for $n>2$. We provide several analytic families of states on $\mathbb{C}^2\otimes\mathb…
We give necessary conditions for the mixing problem in bipartite case, which are independent of eigenvalues and based on algebraic-geometric invariants of the bipartite states. One implication of our results is that for some special bipartite mixed states, only special mixed states in a measure zero set can be used to mix to get them. The results indicate for many physical problems on composite quantum systems the description based on majorization of eigenvalues is not sufficient
Dakic, Vedral and Brukner [Physical Review Letters \tf{105},190502 (2010)] gave a geometric measure of quantum discord in a bipartite quantum state as the distance of the state from the closest classical quantum (or zero discord) state and derived an explicit formula for a two qubit state. Further, S.Luo and S.Fu [Physical Review A \tf{82}, 034302 (2010)] obtained a generic form of this geometric measure for a general bipartite state and established a lower bound. In this brief report we obtain a rigorous lower bound to the geometric measure of quantum discord in a general bipartite state whic…
We find a single parameter family of genuinely entangled three qubit pure states, called the maximally Bell inequality violating states (MBV), which exhibit maximum Bell inequality violation by the reduced bipartite system for a fixed amount of genuine tripartite entanglement quantified by the so called tangle measure. This in turn implies that there holds a complementary relation between the Bell inequality violation by the reduced bipartite systems and the tangle present in the three qubit states, not necessarily pure. The MBV states also exhibit maximum Bell inequality violation by the redu…
Werner and Wolf have proven in Phys. Rev. Lett. 86(16) (2001) a very elegant necessary and sufficient condition for a bosonic continuous variable bipartite Gaussian mixed quantum state to be separable. This condition is, however, difficult to implement in practice. In the present Letter, we propose a simpler condition which only involves the calculation of the symplectic matrix in the Williamson diagonalization of the covariance matrix of the state under consideration. The main tool in our construction is the observation, proved in previous work, that the Wigner transform is covariant only und…
Everett's concept of relative state can be viewed as a map that contains information about correlations between measurement outcomes on two quantum systems. We demonstrate how geometric properties of the relative state map can be used to develop operationally well-defined measures of the total correlation in bipartite quantum systems of arbitrary state space dimension. These measures are invariant under local unitary transformations and non-increasing under local operations. We show that some known correlation measures have a natural interpretation in terms of relative states.
Bipartite maximally entangled states have the property that the largest Schmidt coefficient reaches its lower bound. However, for multipartite states the standard Schmidt decomposition generally does not exist. We use a generalized Schmidt decomposition and the geometric measure of entanglement to characterize three-qubit pure states and derive a single-parameter family of maximally entangled three-qubit states. The paradigmatic Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) and W states emerge as extreme members in this family of maximally entangled states. This family of states possess different trends o…
It is known that an interacting bipartite system evolves as an entangled state in general, even if it is initially in a separable state. Due to the entanglement of the state, the geometric phase of the system is not equal to the sum of the geometric phases of its two subsystems. However, there may exist a set of states in which the nonlocal interaction does not affect the separability of the states, and the geometric phase of the bipartite system is then always equal to the sum of the geometric phases of its subsystems. In this paper, we illustrate this point by investigating a well known phys…
This is a thesis submitted to university of Pune, India, for the Ph.D. degree. This work deals with entanglement production in two qubit, two qutrit and three qubit systems, entanglement in indistinguishable fermionic systems, quantum discord in a Heisenberg chain and geometric measure of quantum discord in an arbitrary state of a bipartite quantum system.
A generalization of the geometric measure of quantum discord is introduced in this article, based on Hellinger distance. Our definition has virtues of computability and independence of local measurement. In addition it also does not suffer from the recently raised critiques about quantum discord. The exact result can be obtained for bipartite pure states with arbitrary levels, which is completely determined by the Schmidt decomposition. For bipartite mixed states the exact result can also be found for a special case. Furthermore the generalization into multipartite case is direct. It is shown …
As two of the most important entanglement measures--the entanglement of formation and the entanglement of distillation--have so far been limited to bipartite settings, the study of other entanglement measures for multipartite systems appears necessary. Here, connections between two other entanglement measures--the relative entropy of entanglement and the geometric measure of entanglement--are investigated. It is found that for arbitrary pure states the latter gives rise to a lower bound on the former. For certain pure states, some bipartite and some multipartite, this lower bound is saturated,…
Geometric quantum discord, proposed by Dakic, Vedral, and Brukner [Phys. Rev. Lett. 105 (2010) 190502], is an important measure for bipartite correlations. In this paper, we generalize it to multipartite states, we call the generalized version geometric global quantum discord (GGQD). We characterize GGQD in different ways, and provide some special states which allow analytical GGQD.
Geometric discord, a measure of quantumness of bipartite system, captures minimal nonlocal effects of a quantum state due to locally invariant von Neumann projective measurements. Original version of this measure is suffered by the local ancilla problem. In this article, we propose a new version of geometric discord using affinity. This quantity satisfies all criteria of a good measure of quantum correlation of the bipartite system and resolves local ancilla problem of Hilbert-Schmidt norm based discord. We evaluate analytically the proposed quantity for both pure and mixed states. For an arbi…
For finite-dimensional bipartite quantum systems, we find the exact size of the largest balls, in spectral $l_p$ norms for $1 \le p \le \infty$, of separable (unentangled) matrices around the identity matrix. This implies a simple and intutively meaningful geometrical sufficient condition for separability of bipartite density matrices: that their purity $\tr ρ^2$ not be too large. Theoretical and experimental applications of these results include algorithmic problems such as computing whether or not a state is entangled, and practical ones such as obtaining information about the existence or n…
We make a geometric study of the phases acquired by a general pure bipartite two level system after a cyclic unitary evolution. The geometric representation of the two particle Hilbert space makes use of Hopf fibrations. It allows for a simple description of the dynamics of the entangled state's phase during the whole evolution. The global phase after a cyclic evolution is always an entire multiple of $π$ for all bipartite states, a result that does not depend on the degree of entanglement. There are three different types of phases combining themselves so as to result in the $n π$ global phase…
The concept of quantum discord aims at unveiling quantum correlations that go beyond those described by entanglement. Its original formulation [J. Phys. A 34, 6899 (2001); Phys. Rev. Lett 88, 017901 (2002)] is difficult to compute even for the simplest case of two-qubits systems. Alternative formulations have been developed to address this drawback, such as the geometric measure of quantum discord [Phys. Rev. A 87, 062303 (2013)] and the local quantum uncertainty [Phys. Rev. Lett 110, 240402 (2013)] that can be evaluated in closed form for some quantum systems, such as two-qubit systems. We sh…
Quantum discord quantifies the total non-classical correlations in mixed states. It is the difference between total correlation, measured by quantum mutual information, and the classical correlation. Another step forward towards the quantification of quantum discord was by Dakic, Vedral, and Brukner [Phys. Rev. Lett. 105,190502 (2010)] who introduced the geometric measure of quantum discord (GMQD) and derived an explicit formula for a two-qubit state. Recently, Luo and Fu [Phys. Rev. Lett. 106, 120401 (2011)] introduced measurement-induced nonlocality (MIN) as a measure of nonlocality for a bi…
The original definition of quantum discord of bipartite states was defined over one-sided projective measurements, it describes quantum correlation more extensively than entanglement. Dakic, Vedral, and Brukner [Phys. Rev. Lett. 105 (2010) 190502] introduced a geometric measure for this quantum discord, and Luo, Fu [Phys. Rev. A 82 (2010) 034302] simplified the variation expression of it. In this paper we introduce a geometric measure for the quantum discord over two-sided projective measurements. A simplified expression and a lower bound of this geometric measure are derived and explicit expr…
A sequence of completely positive maps can be decomposed into quantum trajectories. The geometric phase or holonomy of such a trajectory is delineated. For nonpure initial states, it is shown that well-defined holonomies can be assigned by using Uhlmann's concept of parallel transport along the individual trajectories. We put forward an experimental realization of the geometric phase for a quantum trajectory in interferometry. We argue that the average over the phase factors for all quantum trajectories that build up a given open system evolution, fails to reflect the geometry of the open syst…
We discuss some properties of the quantum discord based on the geometric distance advanced by Dakic, Vedral, and Brukner [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 105}, 190502 (2010)], with emphasis on Werner- and MEM-states. We ascertain just how good the measure is in representing quantum discord. We explore the dependence of quantum discord on the degree of mixedness of the bipartite states, and also its connection with non-locality as measured by the maximum violation of a Bell inequality within the CHSH scenario.
We derive an explicit expression for geometric measure of entanglement for spin and other quantum system. A relation of entanglement in pure state with the mean value of spin is given, thus, at the experimental level the local measurement of spin may allow to find the value of entanglement. The obtained form of the measure is applied to the explicit characterization of bipartite entanglement for $n$-qubit systems in the Werner state, Dicke state, GHZ state and trigonometric states. In particular for Werner-like states the rule of sums is found and it is shown that deviations from the symmetric…
Computing entanglement of an arbitrary bipartite or multipartite mixed state is in general not an easy task as it usually involves complex optimization. Here we show that exploiting symmetries of certain mixed states, we can compute a genuine multiparty entanglement measure, the generalized geometric measure for these classes of mixed states. The chosen states have different ranks and consist of an arbitrary number of parties.
We introduce a measure of quantum correlations in the $N$-qubit quantum system which is invariant with respect to the $SU(2^N)$ group of transformations of this system. This measure is a modification of the quantum discord introduced earlier and is referred to as the unitary or $SU(2^N)$-invariant discord. Since the evolution of a quantum system is equivalent to the proper unitary transformation, the introduced measure is an integral of motion and is completely defined by eigenvalues of the density matrix. As far as the calculation of the unitary invariant discord is rather complicated computa…
An analysis is made within the quantum formalism of the probabilistic features of the electron spin correlation, with the purpose of clarifying the concepts of contextuality and measurement dependence. The quantum formulas for the spin correlation are then derived on the basis of a probability distribution function and its associated geometric representation, both for a pair of projections of a single-particle spin and for the bipartite system in singlet spin state. This endows the spin correlation with a clear probabilistic meaning and leaves the door open for a possible physical image of the…
We present a concise introduction to quantum entanglement. Concentrating on bipartite systems we review the separability criteria and measures of entanglement. We focus our attention on geometry of the sets of separable and maximally entangled states. We treat in detail the two-qubit system and emphasise in what respect this case is a special one.
A closed-trajectory evolution of a quantum state generally imprints a phase that contains both dynamical and geometrical contributions. While dynamical phases depend on the reference system, geometric phase factors are uniquely defined by the properties of the outlined trajectory. Here, we generate and measure geometric phases in a Bose-Einstein condensate of $^{87}$Rb using a combination of dynamical quantum Zeno effect and measurement-free evolution. We show that the dynamical quantum Zeno effect can inhibit the formation of a geometric phase without altering the dynamical phase. This can be…
The degree to which a pure quantum state is entangled can be characterized by the distance or angle to the nearest unentangled state. This geometric measure of entanglement, already present in a number of settings [A. Shimony, Ann. NY. Acad. Sci. 755, p.675 (1995) and H. Barnum and N. Linden, J. Phys. A: Math. Gen. 34, p.6787 (2001)], is explored for bipartite and multipartite pure and mixed states. It is determined for arbitrary two-qubit mixed states and for generalized Werner and isotropic states, and is also applied to certain multipartite mixed states.
We derive a model of quantum-classical hybrids for a simplified model of quantum electrodynamics in the framework of the stochastic variational method. In this model, charged particle trajectories are affected by the interaction with quantized electromagnetic fields, and this quantum-classical interaction induces a displacement current. We further investigate a geometric phase in the wave functional of the gauge field configuration, which is induced by adiabatic motions of the charged particles. This phase contains the quantum-classical backreaction effect and usual Berry's phase is reproduced…
We study the adiabatic approximation of the dynamics of a bipartite quantum system with respect to one of the components, when the coupling between its two components is perturbative. We show that the density matrix of the considered component is described by adiabatic transport formulae exhibiting operator-valued geometric and dynamical phases. The present results can be used to study the quantum control of the dynamics of qubits and of open quantum systems where the two components are the system and its environment. We treat two examples, the control of an atomic qubit interacting with anoth…
We consider a composite open quantum system consisting of a fast subsystem coupled to a slow one. Using the time-scale separation, we develop an adiabatic elimination technique to derive at any order the reduced model describing the slow subsystem. The method, based on an asymptotic expansion and geometric singular perturbation theory, ensures the physical interpretation of the reduced second-order model by giving the reduced dynamics in a Lindblad form and the state reduction in Kraus map form. We give explicit second-order formulas for Hamiltonian or cascade coupling between the two subsyste…
We investigate the behavior of genuine multiparticle entanglement, as quantified by the generalized geometric measure, in gapless-to-gapped quantum transitions of one- and two-dimensional quantum spin models. The investigations are performed in the exactly solvable one-dimensional $XY$ models, as well as two-dimensional frustrated $J_{1}-J_{2}$ models, including the Shastry-Sutherland model. The generalized geometric measure shows non-monotonic features near such transitions in the frustrated quantum systems. We also compare the features of the generalized geometric measure near the quantum cr…
We report the experimental measurement of bipartite quantum correlations of an unknown two-qubit state. Using a liquid state Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) setup and employing geometric discord, we evaluate the quantum correlations of a state without resorting to prior knowledge of its density matrix. The method is applicable to any (2 x d) system and provides, in terms of number of measurements required, an advantage over full state tomography scaling with the dimension d of the unmeasured subsystem. The negativity of quantumness is measured as well for reference. We also observe the phenom…
